The development includes a new convention centre, boutique hotel and business towers, which share space with restaurants, shops and “Grafton Place”, a European-style shared street. The Nova Centre’s contemporary architecture is designed to pay tribute to Halifax’s seafaring past, with the main tower resembling the rising sail of a tall ship arriving in the Halifax Harbour. The entire centre is being constructed sustainably, with the project targeting LEED Gold certification, and includes low emission materials throughout to promote health for all who visit the building. Stonhard worked with Ellis Don and Argyle Developments to deliver a world class finish for the parking decks of this prestigious development.
THE CHALLENGE With final finishes scheduled for installation as the project reached completion, Stonhard was required to install the parking deck finishes within a very compressed time budget. In keeping with the scale of the building, the parking decks encompass approximately 200,000ft2. This includes 94,000ft2 of slab on grade sealers, 8,600ft2 of fast cure MMA systems for the ramps and 61,000ft2 of multi layered, heavy duty polyurethane deck waterproofing materials for suspended slabs and drive lanes. • • • •

To ensure project success, installation crews were drawn from both Nova Scotia and across Canada, with support from Stonhard Offices in the Maritimes and Whitby to maintain the desired schedule. THE SOLUTION As with all Stonhard projects, our single source approach includes surface preparation, material supply and application, which ensures our customers a world class installation on every project. In this case, the suspended slabs were prepared by mechanically recovered shotblast method (Blastrac) in combination with edge and vertical grinding to ensure the correct surface profile for our StonDeck range of materials. Detailing is important to the success of any parking deck installation. Stonhard ensured any cracks uncovered were routed and detailed with flexible membranes, and all floor and wall angles and column bases were treated with polyurethane caulking prior to the installation of any StonDeck waterproofing systems.
Stonhard applied StonDeck FD2 to the parking stalls, StonDeck FD2 HD for drive lanes and turning areas and fast cure MMA StonDeck QD3 to the main access ramps. MMA was chosen to “future proof ” the ramps in the unlikely event that refurbishment should be required, as MMA can be repaired extremely quickly, consequently with minimal disruption. The slab on grade concrete surfaces were prepared by high pressure washing and then sealed with a 100% solids Silane treatment, a simple and cost-effective, non-decorative solution designed to protect from chloride ion penetration. StonDeck Systems are 100% solids, low emitting products designed to meet the requirements of S413 and ASTM C957, and may help to achieve LEED status on any project. They are premium quality deck waterproofing materials engineered with durability in mind for all areas of a parking structure. Stonhard was able to provide a cost competitive and durable solution that was installed on time for the grand opening of this prestigious project.
