AREA: Chemotherapy Prep Lab DATE: 2019 LOCATION: Halifax, Nova Scotia
As part of the Queen Elizabeth II New Generation Project, the Halifax lab where chemotherapy treatment is prepared will move to the Dickson Building. Pomerleau Inc. was tasked with the completion of this project, which will create a bigger, more modern lab with new technology and equipment to better meet current and future demands. The new laboratory space is designed as a clean room, with sealed walls, ceilings and floors. A negative pressure system is also being implemented, which requires the addition of new, larger and heavier HVAC equipment. Due to the size of the HVAC equipment, a new mechanical room was placed on the roof. To accomodate these increased loads and new floor penetrations, structural reinforcement was required.
Stonhard Construction Solutions in conjunction with Aries Contracting installed a carbon fibre strengthening system using CarboComp 1012SU unidirectional CFRP laminate, bonded in place with CarboComp 5800 BL Adhesive. The CarboComp was applied to the top and bottom of the concrete slabs. Aries Contracting also installed fireproofing to the CFRP where required. CarboComp SU and CarboComp Plus Laminates are available in a wide range of sizes to accommodate project needs. They have high tensile strength, low self weight, can be installed seamlessly in long run lengths. They can be used on concrete, timber and steel substrates, making them an ideal choice for most structural strengthening projects.
