Devdutt Pattanaik
In this exclusive interview, renowned mythologist and author Devdutt Pattanaik delves into the fascinating world of the Harappan civilisation, offering fresh perspectives on its economy, trade practices, and societal dynamics From the striking modular architecture that hinted at commerce-driven efficiency to the evolving role of women in leadership and the intriguing symbolism of the Ahimsa seal, Pattanaik challenges modern assumptions about ancient cultures He also explores the profound connection between mythology and contemporary business ethics, highlighting how ancient narratives continue to shape our worldview today Join us as we uncover untold stories of Harappa and discover how mythology can offer timeless wisdom for modern life
In Ahimsa, you discuss the role of standardisation and modular thinking in the Harappan civilisation. How did these elements shape their economic practices and trade relationships, particularly with regions like the Middle East?
One of the most peculiar features of the Harappan civilisation is its organised cities The bricks are of a standard shape, and the houses appear to be modular, meaning the large and small houses have essentially the same design All this indicates a civilisation concerned with efficiency, as standardised and modular thinking are indicators of efficiency in modern businesses This suggests that the Harappan civilisation was controlled by those involved in commerce, trade, and business This is confirmed by the presence of Indus beads and seals in Mesopotamia, indicating a maritime culture where ships travelled along the Indus River, up the Makran coast, and through the Persian Gulf, via Oman and Bahrain, to reach the cities of Sumeria. The mercantile nature of Harappa is often overlooked.
Your observations on women’s roles in the Harappan economy and the androgynous figures on seals prompt us to reconsider gender dynamics in ancient cultures. What does this suggest about leadership and commerce, and how might it challenge modern assumptions?
There is very little information about Harappa. Most of our knowledge comes from architecture and art. It has been observed that many archaeologists make assumptions about gender roles based less on what they can see and more on their personal experiences and 21st-century prejudices For example, when they see a naked girl standing with bangles on her arm, they assume she must be a dancing girl However, when they see a bearded man with a shawl over his shoulders, they assume he is a priest-king, though there are many other possible interpretations Recently, a graphic novel assumed the Harappans were heteronormative, with one man marrying one woman and having children But how do we come to such conclusions? Why assume marriage was an important institution in Harappa? Why couldn’t there have been polyandry, where a single woman had many husbands a practice found in many mercantile communities in India, where women stayed home and had relations with sailors, with the children belonging to the mother? Matrilineal and matrilocal traditions have been suggested by some bone DNA analyses from Harappan graves, but this is seldom discussed. I wanted to draw attention to these possibilities
How does your interpretation of the Harappan seal, which depicts a woman intervening in a conflict to introduce 'Ahimsa' as a key societal principle, reshape our understanding of ancient economic practices and the significance of nonviolence in trade, and can you also share how your illustration style developed and what the process entails for creating an illustration for your books?
There are at least two seals from Harappa that show two men fighting In one, they are fighting with trees, and in another, they are fighting with weapons or spears, with a woman between them. This is usually interpreted as two men fighting over a woman, but if you look carefully, at least in one image, it’s clear that a person with bangles is separating the two men. To me, this isn’t about fighting over a woman, but rather about someone trying to stop a fight and bring reason to the situation. I argue that this could represent an ‘Ahimsa’ seal, which aligns with the mercantile, trading nature of Harappan cities The fact that there are no signs of military activity, no signs of war, and no major weapons, makes you
In September 1924, John Marshall, Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India, revealed the astonishing discovery of the Indus (Harappan) civilization— 4,500 years old, as ancient as Mesopotamia and Egypt, and a key player in the Bronze Age trading network. But how did this enigmatic civilization influence later Vedic and Tantric thought? Did their monastic practices foreshadow the emergence of Buddhism and Jainism? Could their undeciphered script function like modern-day emojis, conveying complex ideas through symbols? It's fascinating that they depicted rivalry, yet no war or romance, and while their cities vanished, their villages thrived. A century later, in Ahimsa, Devdutt Pattanaik revisits this 'peaceful' civilization through mythology, exploring how the Harappan legacy endures across present-day India and Pakistan.
think that this was a different kind of civilisation
I always illustrate my books The aim is not to be historically accurate but to communicate ideas through artwork that cannot be expressed through words alone, and I have been doing this for the past 20 years in all my books. Harappa was no exception. I wanted to share my imagination of the past with my readers.
You differentiate between mythology and ideology in your research. How does this distinction enhance our comprehension of the Harappan civilisation's belief systems, and what implications does it hold for interpreting ancient cultures today?
Actually, I don’t differentiate between mythology and ideology Mythology is a word that was used in the 19th century rather contemptuously for nonEuropean stories Nowadays, archaeologists prefer to use the word ‘ideology’ but avoid ‘mythology ’ This tells us something about how words are perceived Ideas are communicated through stories, and the Greek word for stories is ‘mythos ’ Every civilisation has beliefs shaped by stories Even today, we believe in certain stories The idea that a nation is great, or who its enemies are, is implanted in our minds through stories told by those around us. We often forget that these are social constructs, not necessarily facts.
The emphasis on the relevance of mythology in shaping modern business ethics and social responsibility in the book is an interesting take. In what ways can these mythological narratives transform contemporary business practices? Can you cite a few examples?
Modern business is often built on vision statements, where we talk about value creation, targets, tasks, and tracking systems These ideas aren’t always rational; they stem from the biblical belief in marching towards a ‘promised land’ a utopia where everyone is free, equal, and living in abundance This is a Western construct It does not incorporate the concept of karma, where actions have repercussions Therefore, modern businesses rarely consider the consequences of their activities They often fail to discuss the impact wealth generation has on nature and culture, or how it contributes to climate change and inequality This is why we are often surprised by such issues in the post-industrial age Modern marketing and management are based on biblical structures, where karma and consequence don’t exist, and now we’re paying the price for this limited view of mythology and management.
It appears that the emphasis on religion or caste as defining identities often overshadows individual actions. Do you believe this tendency is part of human nature, and has it been present throughout history, even in ancient times?
Human beings like to be part of groups These groups can take the form of bands, tribes, clans, castes, religions, or nations These are different ways in which we identify ourselves The individual does not exist in isolation or in a vacuum, and that must be acknowledged The Western notion of an individual living independently of society is a fantasy The real challenge lies in negotiating these multiple identities and those of the people around us Whether you are an atheist or a secular person, you still create new categories, new tribes It’s no different from being religious and thinking other
Pic: Devdutt Pattanaik, Author, Ahimsa: 100 Reflections on the Harappan Civilization
religions are inferior, or having a caste system where other castes are seen as superior or inferior Even today, we identify with political parties or alumni, and this will never go away
Many readers admire your work, DevduttPattanaik. Do you have any role models who inspire you? Additionally, how would you like younger generations to perceive Indian mythology and history?
I don’t believe in the concept of role models. We all live our own lives, facing our own challenges. I think the purpose of existence is to figure out who you are, rather than mimicking or imitating others, or seeing them as pathfinders for your journey
I think young people should read mythology and history to understand how people around them navigated life By seeing how others managed their lives, you can find your own way of managing yours and decide what works best for you I believe that’s the most valuable lesson mythology and history can offer

WHEN THE WAR LIVES N
Amita kneads the dough with the refined flour, while the potato curry simmers on the gas stove. A golden strand of dazzling morning sunshine streams down from the blithe sky onto her kitchen floor All are ready to graciously welcome her son Varun who will be back from the war today
She wonders whether he’s well fed at the battlefront and that too at such a high altitude with minimum temperature falling below zerodegree Celsius, having freezing nights Is he clad warmly enough? Once he reaches Delhi, she can breathe in an air of comfort She is constantly preoccupied with this worry of his well-being that is like a vegetable corer scooping out the seeds of tranquility from inside her
Amita turns off the gas stove knob, as the potato curry starts bubbling and is ready to serve The dough is almost done When Varun comes, she will expeditiously roll the dough and deep-fry the bread He will get to relish steaming potato curry along with piping-hot fried bread The ones that he enjoys the most and that too being cooked by his mother
She hears footsteps outside the kitchen It must be Varun. Since his childhood days, he wouldcome unexpectedly from behind, palming her eyes. A mother always recognizes her son’s touch.
“What’s up, Ma?” Varun will say in his stentorian voice. Will she be able to feel him or identify his voice? How can she forget even if it has been a long time?
As she turns around while halving an aubergine lengthways, she finds her youngest son, Tarun, peeping inside
“How come you are at home at this time? It’s already half past ten ”
“I have taken the day off, Ma ”
“I knew it Taking leave just like that See your elder brother, Varun, who is fighting for the country Learn to be responsible like him I thought that his bravery was bound to inspire and instill in you a sense of duty and dedication to the nation But I was wrong It’s because of soldiers like him that you get to lead a safe and comfortable life ”
Tarun works as an executive in a private bank Every year, without fail, he takes leave on this day
“You’d your breakfast, Ma?” Tarun asks, although he knows the answer.Since early morning he has been traipsing around the corridor, hoping to get an extra cup of coffee but his mother hasn’t paid any heed to that. All she is busy with is preparing food items for his elder brother. Pining for Varun’s supportive shoulder, he feels as if he is lost in a dark tunnel, wading through knee-deep water, where the more he tries to escape, the more he gets drawn inward by an unknown force “How can I eat without Varun? He’ll be home any moment I will first serve him and then we’ll eat together ”
Both of them walk toward the living room Amita’s husband, Kunal, is flicking through the morning newspaper
“What about breakfast?” He asks, on seeing them together He checks the wall clock It’s almost ten o’clock
“Not now Let’s wait for Varun ” Amita says vociferously, irritated; the dark circles under her eyes, unpacified by sleep, remind them of their life’s gloom
Kunal gazes at the empty dining table that has been lying unused since morning
The calling bell rings all of a sudden Tarun rushes to open the door It’s his elder sister, Sujata
“It’s good you came, Sujata We’re all waiting for Varun ” Amita says brightly, smoothing Sujata’s hair while hugging her
Sujata looks around searchingly, perhaps for the evercheerful Varun, his pranks of pulling her hair from behind, his always-ready-to-lend-an-ear-to-her approach in moments of crisis that can only be shared with a sibling, his thoughtful words and practicable advice.
Kunal reaches for the TV remote sittingon the center table. He switches on the TV.
A well-dressed lady is talking about the Kargil Victory Day celebrations, “The Indian Air Force is paying homage to the bravehearted soldiersthrough the display of fighter planes across the skies The ceremonial reminiscence of their courage and valor in defending the nation’s sovereigntyis serving as a unifying moment and fostering a sense of national pride and gratitude among the citizens This year the Prime Minister ”
Kunal lowers the volume, adjusting the button on the remote, while others seem to be looking at the TV screen and beyond “It’s 2009 Almost 10 years have passed since the Kargil War happened ” Kunal says, observing his wife intently Life has always tricked him in unbeknownst ways Whenever he thinks he is free and at peace, he falls into its deceptive manners, leading to turmoil and disarray
Amita watches vacantly the garlanded photograph of Varun on the wall Absentmindedly, Kunal glances at her, processing her silence to be that of comprehension of the present situation
“Someone needs to change this garland Can’t you see the flowers have dried?” Amita says abruptly, registering a mark of protest at what she thinks to be an uncaring indifference of her family members toward her son’s only physical existence
Tarun gawps at his father who gestures to him to remain silent A little while ago, Tarun had brought a fresh garland to put on his brother’s framed photograph
“Ma, for how long will you continue ” Sujata is hushed by her father who tries hard to control his tears, as his vision blurs
He is unable to forget the instance when two officers from the military force had come to inform him that his son had gone missing from the battlefront. An avalanche had struck his army contingent, and the soldiers had disappeared. The casualty operations couldn’t find any traces of him along with so many of his fellow soldiers engaged in fierce combat at such a high altitude and difficult, icy terrain that had been surreptitiously occupied by infiltrators.
Every time he attempts to move on, the loss makes its presence feel like an old wound that refuses to heal, leaving an indelible scar to tackle lifelong But a mother’s sorrow is perhaps even deeper than that of a father In the stillness of the night and wee hours of the morning when the world sleeps, he has seen his wife wake up with a sudden, trembling agitation, an indescribable restlessness unable to be suitably consoled All are moving at their own pace the people around, the Sun, the Moon, the seasons, the Earth She is the only one static in the entire universe one who refuses to get swept away with the curative time, trounced by the influence of the unspoken, yet perceivable, misery
“Where’s your mother?” Kunal asks noticing his wife is not present in the room
“Just now she went away, Papa Probably to the washroom ” Sujata says, twiddling with her hair, peering dimly at her father “Every year, on this day, it is the same When will she ” She pauses to hear the sizzling and popping sound coming from the kitchen
“I’m getting the puris made You all get ready for breakfast ” Amita announces loudly from the kitchen in a voice as if nothing ever happened.
At the breakfast table, they are unusually quiet,as if constrained by their individual mind’s stifling atmospheric
weight that has reached a state of having ceased to produce sounds
“We have to let go of our past ” Kunal harrumphs before voicing his mind, as he understands that all are fighting a battle within themselves Even long after the war is over, they are invaded and subjugated by the everlasting warfare of grief and disquietude
“I understand I promise to try ” Amita says, lowering her eyes, fiddling with her teacup, knowing holding on to improbable hope is nothing but a losing battle
“Otherwise, Varun won’t be at peace wherever he is.” Kunal emphasizes on the word peace, repeating it like a prayer, imbuing tenderness to the palpable anguish that somehow loosens its grip on dead, but vivid, memories.
After breakfast, the family sits down in the living room. A film of solace is found in each of their eyes.
Perhaps the time has come when they are ready to move forward So far, the sadness has been exhaustive, draining them of their vitality
Suddenly the calling bell rings, and there is a loud pounding on the door
“Is it Varun?” Amita says, hurrying up to the door, while all stare expectantly

INTERVIEW
Kala Krishnan,
Author: Murugan Trilogy
n this captivating interview, the author delves into the intricate mythology of Lord Murugan, a figure revered in the southern regions of India but often lesserknown outside those circles She shares personal anecdotes of her early fascination with the deity, stemming from her family’s devotion and a pivotal moment during her teenage years that reshaped her understanding of Murugan as the "God of Language " Throughout the conversation, she explores the nuances of blending traditional myths with her creative reimaginings, offering insights into how Murugan’s multifaceted character, the central figures in her trilogy, and her poetic voice all intertwine to create a narrative that is both deeply personal and universally resonant
What initially drew you to explore the mythology of Murugan? Was there a particular moment or experience that ignited your passion for this lesser-known deity? Additionally, were there specific ancient texts, stories, or oral traditions that played a significant role in shaping your reinterpretation of Murugan's mythology? How did these sources influence the way you reimagined and brought new life to this complex and revered figure?
Murugan is an important deity in the South, he has traditions of literature and worship that are exclusive to him. My siblings and I were born into my parents’ (especially my father’s) devotion to Murugan, so he was there at home, and we had to accompany our parents, on their temple visits.
My first memory of Murugan striking me as being interesting, is from my early teens, during a Tamil movie, in which he appears to help a devotee He is wearing human shape and calling himself a servant ‘velaikkaran,’ punning his own name, ‘Velaikkaran,’ the Lance Bearer This was a moment of crystallization, many things gathered and in my young head Murugan became the God of Language, and of language trickery It was thrilling, though at that time, it was a party-magic thrill What I felt then, evolved to include a sense of Murugan as a sort of border-god, a liminal god who sometimes stops in the spaces between word meanings
Lord Murugan is a multifaceted character in your novel—playful yet powerful, mischievous yet divine. How did you approach developing his personality? Did you draw inspiration from any other literary or mythological figures?
The general politics of reading and interpretation shaped Murugan’s character, in my poetry and in the trilogy Presentations, re-presentations and interpretations of this god, his work and praise are
generally garbed in piety, a Sanskritized (brahminic) piety My Murugan came out of a determined rejection of this the God of Language cannot be shut up in piety, he roves wild in both language and nature He delights in the variety of both I did not draw inspiration from any specific literary or mythological figure, but my writing was certainly motored by quick-wittedness and luminous ways in which folk, devotional and films songs depict Murugan and sing of his antics and his delight in inventing and getting his poets to invent new ways of using language
In Theivanai, Aambal, the war bard, emerges as a central character. Her memories are obliterated, and her poetic voice silenced. Could you share your inspiration behind Aambal’s struggle, and how you approached portraying her journey of reclaiming words and identity?
This was the least difficult part of the writing To put it briefly: Aambal is me, or rather Aambal is me, the poet Aambal’s character and her work come out of my experience of writing: my identity as a writer, my struggle for words, for what perfection is within my ability Murugan and Aambal are Writing and I. When I do not/cannot write, in particular, poetry, a part of me dies, dries out, and this aridity spreads into all aspects of my life, and the double bind is that then, the words seem to become less exciting and almost inaccessible. When I write, I am like Aambal. In real life, I’m introverted and socially uncertain. But like her, in writing, with language, I am valorous. There is no work more satisfying and self-affirming to me than the work of languaging.
The relationship between Murugan and Theivanai is a significant thread in the narrative. How did you balance the divine aspects of their connection with the human emotions that bind them? What challenges did you face while portraying their love story?
Theivanai was a crucial element in the conceptualization of the trilogy; in fact, her character was the germ
Mainstream tellings reduce her to a figurehead, someone who is given to Murugan as a ‘prize ’ It seemed impossible that Theivanai was so insubstantial, and I started with imagining what her substantiality would be and she developed into one of my most favourite characters I think that it may be the character of Theivanai who gives voice to and performs my politics
Balancing divine and human was easy because Murugan’s delight in ‘human’ ways was established, and in a sense all of what we read about Murugan in the trilogy is what comes out of his living a ‘human’ life along with his best friend Aambal So, his own humanness is foregrounded
Pic: Kala Krishnan, Author: Murugan Trilogy
Pic: Kala Krishnan, Author: Murugan Trilogy
My big challenges are in relation to the politics of literary reception: what kinds of literature are taken seriously, mainly I know that my writing, despite its strong politics stands to be taken less seriously because it is ‘mythological’
In "Theivanai", you take readers further into Murugan's realm. How did you choose which lesser-known elements of his mythology to highlight? Were there any obscure stories that captivated you the most? What kind of research did you undertake for this exploration?
I think the ‘lesser-known’ aspects are ‘made-up’ aspects, so maybe it’s a sort of myth making rather than myth retelling Yes, there were a few obscure stories that were captivating, but more than that, it was the very potent suggestive resonances of songs in classical concerts, songs heard over loudspeakers, while passing through small towns, music from FM or pen-drives in hire taxis, or comments that I heard as I walked through old temple complexes All of these became fodder for my imagination
Research, in its conventional sense is mostly limited to facts, to information regarding the more physical aspects, like the coordinates of Paramkundram, or the origin and course of some of the books’ rivers, or of the Indus Valley script. My main ‘re-search’ is internal: in the impulses that summon my imagination; I track the passage of that imagining…follow it, till it reaches a language destination.
Your writing beautifully incorporates poetic elements, especially in its celebration of the Tamil language. How do you approach blending lyrical language with narrative, and what significance does the Tamil language hold for you in this creative process?
Thank you! I am besotted with language; to me the world is a function of language and my measure of self, of ability and success all come from this Language is crucial to me, in every sense I feel its life is my life force when I disregard the potential of language I feel leeched of self In one of the books of the trilogy, there is a line that goes, ‘Language is the greatest seduction of all ’
I am unable to explain what Tamil language means to me, or rather I’m unable to say why I am so besotted with it I was not born into it, in fact, it should be the one I least know My parents are Malayali, I studied Kannada and Hindi in school and college; I work with Sanskrit Tamil, I had only heard in films, songs, conversations But it was the one that spun its spell Now, of course, I have been learning it, with many tutors, for some years
Were there any difficulties in maintaining this balance while blending traditional myths with your creative interpretations? How did you manage to stay true to the original stories while infusing them with your distinct perspective?
I have been making-up, less than interpreting, more spinning tales rather than putting a spin on already existing tales What I stay true to, is my imagination, and of course the essential skeleton of the body of Murugan stories; I’ve not ‘altered’ his character, but rather I’ve filled up what to me seemed to be unfleshed pockets in this body
How important do you believe it is to write stories based on mythology and its related fiction? In your view, what role do these ancient tales play in contemporary literature, and how do they help us connect with cultural heritage? Do you think reimagining these stories allows for deeper exploration of timeless themes, or perhaps offers a fresh perspective on modern issues through a mythological lens?
Mythology is an unmoored raft, drifting into islands of language that are out of the path of stable, wellmachined forms. In our time, which is a time of great certainties in politics, personal relationships, work modes, identity etc. what the reading, writing and imagining of/from/with the mythopoeic does is, it flows along with the certainties, preventing freezing, and steering the flowing into many directions. And of course, there’s social media. Social media is great for form, the way that a thing can be presented, but it has also this quality of universalizing, of removing particulars, and in that way it flattens out writing, it makes language far less adventurous Mythology, like dream opens up language and the imagination of language, and in doing so it takes us where we cannot predict
What safety measures do you think new writers should take when attempting to write mythological fiction? How important is it to thoroughly research the cultural and historical context of the myths they’re reimagining? Do you believe there’s a responsibility to respect the beliefs and traditions tied to these stories, and how can writers avoid misrepresentation or cultural appropriation while adding their creative spin?
Respect is crucial, of course But respect to what? There are varieties of beliefs, traditions, languages, cultural practices etc and perhaps it makes sense to begin form that the versions which are in force come from the silencing of these varieties And to refuse to
be bound to replicate those notions, stories, characterization, but this doesn’t mean going on some offense For me, a fundamental need is to resist exclusion and homogeneity, and to resist the notion that the Sanskritized/brahminic is the ‘correct’ version
How has your trilogy influenced your personality and way of thinking? In what ways did writing these stories challenge or reshape your perspectives on themes such as identity, culture, or spirituality?
The trilogy came from the poetry the trilogy is a bodying of the stories that live in the poems The writing of the trilogy, indeed of sustained prose, was a deliberate and not easy decision and the actual writing does have a strong influence on me It has accentuated my disregard for conventionality, my delight in language and my commitment to writing the way I want to write
My perspectives on culture and identity were reinforced by the writing. Cultures are varied, identities are fluid, and both are tied to language, which is itself chimerical, sense-changing and constantly evolving.
I feel disconnected from the word ‘spirituality’. I’d rather use the word ‘devotion.’ I believe that devotion and craft go together. Craft requires distilled attentiveness and to me devotion is a distillate of attentiveness. And language’s seduction draws out attentiveness
THE
SCARS OF THE WAR (BASED ON A TRUE STORY)
BYANKURR.GUPTA
The courtroom was a tense war space filled with the weight of a broken family. Reena's face was etched with agony as she stood before the judge. Her voice trembled as she poured out her heart.
"Your Honor, I cannot allow my son to live with a man who destroyed my life," she pleaded, her words punctuated by sobs
Across the courtroom, Sameer stood, his own face a mask of anger and resentment "I refuse to let my son live with an uneducated, uncultured woman who made my life miserable," he retorted, his voice filled with bitterness
Seven-year-old Vedant sat in the center of this storm, his eyes wide with confusion and fear He had witnessed his parents' arguments behind closed doors for some time, but this was different
"Why are they both fighting in front of so many strangers?" He wondered with confusion and fear He then watched his mother, her face flushed and her eyes filled with tears as the man in the black coat spoke to her Vedant didn't understand the legal jargon or the gravity of the situation, but he could sense the pain and anguish in his mother's voice His lost eyes kept watching his parents searching for love, which was once a source of comfort and security for him But now it has turned into a war zone
A wave of insecurity washed over him that slowly transformed into loneliness.
The day of the final decision arrived, and Vedant was brought into the courtroom. The judge asked him to choose between his mother and father.
The young Vedant wanted to shout, to say that he loved both of them and didn't want to choose. But words failed him, and he could only stare at his parents Their faces, once filled with love for each other, were contorted in anger and despair, oblivious to what he felt
The court announced the verdict He was to be placed in the custody of his father, who was financially better off
mother, but staying in a different city limited his visits. Post-divorce, she had gone on a spiritual journey and had little to offer the boy.
Sans parents love Vedant, still grew up as a charismatic and outgoing young man. He had a sharp wit and a quick sense of humor, often leaving his friends and acquaintances in stitches His ability to find common ground with people of all ages and backgrounds made him a popular figure in his social circle
While many admired him as a lucky charm, his life held a hidden truth Beneath his cheerful exterior, he faced trials that were troubling him
Fifteen years passed, Vedant was raised benevolently by his grandparents
His father was busy running his business, and whatever little time he had, he tried to substitute it with gifts and a lavish lifestyle for him He met his
"Slow down, man," Abhi, his best friend, chided, his voice laced with concern "This is your tenth breakup What's going on with you???
Bro, I've watched you through all these relationships You have feelings for these girls, but you pull away as soon as things get serious "
Abhi was trying hard to figure out the reason for his friend's unusual pattern in his relationships
He continues, "Take Rita, for instance I saw how much you cared for her And this time, I thought you would stay, but then you broke up with her out of the blue Why, bro? Why are you doing this to yourself?"
Vedant's voice trembled as he confessed, "Because I find it difficult to trust others, especially those who offer intimate friendship or affection. I'm always on guard with them! "
"But Why? "Abhi was shocked to hear this.
"I don't know…why...?
But I know I constantly fear betrayal
"Betrayal?? "Questioned startled, Abhi
"Yes of letting someone in my life and then watching them leave So, I shy away from any commitments
They scare me That's why I sabotaged my relationships, pushing people away before they could get too close and hurt me "Vedant spoke in a row of breath
His face was flustered with confusion and desperation as he continued, "Why I act like this, even I don't know " He helplessly throws his hands in despair
He was desperately searching for the reason which was creating turmoil in his life
Twenty years later, Abhi was sitting in his office A nameplate, Abhishek Chaturvedi, the CEO, flashed on his table He was holding something that took him back down memory lane to a specific day
It was Vedant's 23rd birthday Abhi was heading to his bungalow to pick him up for a surprise party
"Vedant?" he called out, echoing through the empty halls The usual sounds of servants bustling about the house were absent, replaced by an unsettling stillness He pushed open Vedant's room, the dim glow revealing a heartbreaking sight
Curled up on the bed, Vedant shook with silent sobs.
"Abhi," he choked out, his voice thick with anguish, as he lunged forward for a desperate embrace.
"My father's getting remarried," he whispered, his voice raw and broken.
"The last flicker of hope I had for Mom to come back it's gone for us to live as a family is gone "
The agony in his voice made Abhi shudder as he realized the depth of his friend's longing for a complete family He had seen him sad before, but today, he witnessed a shattered reflection that he had never encountered before
That was the last time Abhi saw Vedant The following week, he was gone His grandparents informed him that he had left for Singapore Despite Abhi's repeated pleas, they refused to divulge his exact location Abhi understood that his friend wanted to distance himself from everything that reminded him of his past life
Over time, he lost touch with Vedant When his grandparents passed away, all hope of finding him seemed lost
Flashback ends
Abhi was holding the card that said Vedant wed Rita Attached was a personal note detailing his last twenty years of life.
He begins to read
Dear Abhi, I will start from where I left off
After my grandparents' death, I had severed all ties with my parents and from India to immerse myself in my career Yet, I couldn't heal from my scars For years, I kept brooding over the events that had shaped my life, trapped in a cycle of anger, resentment, and fear Eventually, I realized that I needed help
So, I sought the guidance of a therapist, who helped me to understand the root causes of my pain
The therapist revealed to me my dark truth
"Vedant, you’re still stuck in that courtroom it was your parents' war-torn life that had trapped you in a cycle of fear and constant sense of betrayal of being left alone. So, surrounded by people, you still always felt lonely except for Abhi, your childhood friend. But you even feared losing him. That's why you severed all your ties with him."
Sighing bitterly, I agreed.
"Hmmm…. Deep down in my heart, I knew this…but kept running away from it thinking, how can parents do this to their only child "
"Then it's time you accept it and let it go," advised the therapist
The treatment proceeded, and gradually, I began to deal with the complex emotions holding me back. It was during this challenging period that I met Rita again. Her warmth and unwavering support offered a glimmer of hope in the darkness. As our friendship blossomed, I began seeing the world through a different lens, though still hesitantly.
One evening, as we strolled along Marina Bay, Rita confessed her love for me
I broke down, sobbing like a lost child, leaving the poor girl in dismay She gathered me into her arms and apologized if she had said anything wrong to hurt me It was this time I confronted my demons to her and poured out my heart, speaking of the pain, the loneliness, and the confusion that had consumed me
I spoke of my emptiness, which grew larger with each passing day
"It started when my parents divorced," I confessed "The absence of their love and presence left a gaping hole in my life I felt so alone, so lost I didn't know how to cope or find my way "
I then finally admitted, "I've always been afraid of commitment because I've seen the pain that love can bring "
"Vedant," she said softly to me "I'm so sorry you've been going through this… but It's okay to feel this way, especially after such a difficult time."
She then reached out and gently took my hand. Her words still echo in my mind.
She said, " Remember, my love, you're not alone now. I'm here for you. Together, we can find ways to help you move forward."
She made a promise Her promise was like a soothing balm to my bruised soul
xxxx
One day, Rita advised me to reach out to my parents
My immediate reaction was, "I don't know if I can do this?"
"Vedant, you deserve to be heard And I believe your parents will understand," she pressed
"But it's been so long." I hesitated.
She held me gently and said, "My dear, time doesn't heal all wounds. It just changes the way we feel about them. But talking about them can help you process those feelings and move forward."
Her words made sense, but I was just so afraid of getting rejected again by my parents
She then tried to reason out my apprehensions
"You're not seeking their approval You're simply pouring your heart into them and the wrong done to you "
"Hmm maybe "
I was still unsure, or, shall I say, not ready to face my past xxxx
With time and Rita's and the therapist's help, I realized that confronting the past would be difficult but necessary for my healing
I returned to India
My conversation with my father started tense, filled with unspoken words and lingering resentment as I began angrily
"Why couldn't you have been there for me?"
Looking down, spoke my father in a faint voice.
"I know, son. I know. It was wrong. But you have to understand..."
"Understand?" (Interrupting him) I continued.
"I've been trying to understand for years! Your absence left a hole in my life that nothing could fill "
"I'm sorry, Son My own struggles clouded my judgment
I made mistakes, and I regret them deeply "
Listening to my father's apologies, something melted in me maybe my anger about being left alone
"Dad it still hurts "I said in a faint voice
He immediately reached out, placing a hand on my shoulder "I know, son And I'm here now I want to make things right "
Hearing this, I replied, "I want that too. But it's going to take time."
My response startled me. I had decided it would be my last meeting with my dad, and here I was, mending the broken bridges between us.
A few days later, I met my mother She was a changed woman, having found solace in spirituality She expressed deep regret for her inability to provide for me during childhood
Tears streamed down her face as she spoke "I'm so sorry, son I failed you as a mother I should have been there for you "
"Mom, it's okay I understand You were going through your own struggles "
But she shook her head in repentance
"No, it's not okay I should have fought harder I should have "
"Mom, please What matters is that we're here together now "
Smiling sadly, she looked into my eyes, and as we spoke, a sense of peace washed over me
I realized that while the scars of the past would remain, they could be healed through gradual forgiveness Tears streamed down my face, and a sense of closure started to wash over me.
xxxx
Abhi heaved a heavy sigh as he finished reading the letter. A bittersweet feeling washed over him.
He mutters. "Conflict, whether fought on physical battlefields or in the psychological realm, leaves an indelible scar on everyone connected to it
I'm glad my friend's scars of the War are finally fading away "
He then rushed to catch the first flight to join his buddy for his long-due happiness

Dating back around 4,500 years, the Bronze Age society rivalled Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt in its grandeur and was a key player in the trading networks of the time Yet, many aspects of the Harappan civilization remain shrouded in mystery, leaving scholars pondering important questions. How did the Harappan culture influence later Vedic and Tantrik thought? Did their monastic ideals contribute to the foundations of Buddhism and Jainism? Why did their script, often compared to modern emojis, remain so elusive? Most intriguingly, why were there images of rivalry, but no depictions of war or romance, and how did their cities fade while their villages endured? Renowned mythologist Devdutt Pattanaik revisits the Harappan civilization in his book, "Ahimsa: 100 Reflections on the Harappan Civilization" after a century Devdutt Pattanaik offers a fresh perspective by exploring the Harappans through mythology, focusing on their core value of non-violence In this insightful work, he unravels the peaceful nature of this civilization, whose influence can still be seen in modern Indian philosophies such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism Pattanaik dives into the Harappans' deep understanding of peace and examines their social structures, emphasizing how their legacy has shaped later religious and cultural traditions in India From its visually captivating cover to its concluding chapter, "Ahimsa" is an enlightening read. The book is not just a historical exploration; it’s also a visual treat, brimming with illustrations that complement the text. Pattanaik’s ability to blend mythology with historical analysis is both engaging and informative. Each chapter offers a fascinating glimpse into Harappan life, from their agricultural practices to their spiritual beliefs. Notably, the chapter on "Fishing and Farming" stands out for its vivid descriptions and compelling visuals Pattanaik masterfully bridges the ancient world with the present, showing how many elements of Harappan culture continue to influence Indian life today Any person who is interested to read more about Harappan history will surely be captivated by the book and its links to Vedic culture, this book was particularly satisfying Literature on the Harappans is relatively scarce, making "Ahimsa" a valuable addition to the field Author Pattanaik’s reflections not only answered many of questions but also led to intriguing conclusions, such as the idea that Hindu traditions may trace their roots back to the Harappans One of the most thoughtprovoking claims in the book is that modern Indians may be descendants of Aryan fathers and Harappan mothers

How to Talk with Anyone about Anything by Dr.
Harville Hendrix
and
Dr. Helen LaKelly Hunt
"How to Talk with Anyone About Anything",
by authors Dr. Harville Hendrix and Dr. Helen LaKelly Hunt addresses the problem of poor communication in relationships. They believe that the main issue is our struggle to discuss differences without causing conflict. This struggle can lead to arguments
in our personal lives, workplaces, and even in politics. To help, they introduce the Safe Conversations Dialogue process, a set of skills designed to promote understanding and connection, allowing people to handle differences better and build safer, more meaningful relationships. The authors point out that many of us often engage in one-sided conversations, where we only share our viewpoints and assume everyone else thinks the same way This can create frustration and tension since we often don’t listen to or appreciate others’ experiences By encouraging dialogue instead of monologues, the authors show how changing our communication style can reduce conflict and open the door to collaboration and problem-solving They stress that we need this change urgently, as unresolved differences can lead to anxiety and anger The Safe Conversations process includes four easy-to-learn skills that create a safe space for discussion: Dialogue, Zero Negativity, Empathy, and Affirmation These skills help us improve our interactions For instance, practicing Zero Negativity means we focus on positive requests rather than criticism, which helps build understanding instead of defensiveness. Developing empathy allows us to understand different viewpoints without losing our own, while affirmation helps us connect genuinely by valuing people just for who they are. Overall, "How to Talk with Anyone About Anything" is more than just a guide for better communication; it’s a plan for creating a more inclusive society. Hendrix and Hunt dream of a world where differences are celebrated instead of feared, leading to teamwork and cooperation in all areas of life
By giving readers the tools to connect meaningfully with others, this book opens the way for a shift toward safety, equality, and acceptance a hopeful vision for a future where everyone can thrive together while embracing their differences.
In The Corporation in the Twenty-First Century
by
John Kay
The book "In The Corporation in the TwentyFirst Century: Why (almost) Everything We Are Told about business is wrong" by John Kay delves into the turbulent realm of contemporary business, drawing comparisons between two key developments in management theory: the unwavering quest of shareholder value and the
emergence of the knowledge economy Kay meticulously analyses how the fall of once-dominant companies like GE and Deutsche Bank illustrates the dangers of putting shortterm earnings ahead of long-term development His main point is very clear: even though the idea of shareholder value has become less popular, it still retains a lot of clout in boardrooms, frequently at the expense of ethics and longterm stability Author John Kay expertly illustrates how companies today, like Apple and Meta, thrive not just by amassing financial resources, but by leveraging intellectual capital. He argues that the days of rigid command-andcontrol management are over; instead, modern businesses flourish through collaboration and inclusivity. This shift has birthed a new type of corporation what Kay calls the “hollow corporation” which outsources production and relies on a flexible workforce to adapt quickly to market changes. As he puts it, problem-solving has replaced lean production as the key to competitive advantage, leading to a more empathetic management style that considers social impact alongside profitability However, this transformation comes with its own challenges Despite the innovation these companies bring, there's a growing public distrust towards big business, largely due to unethical practices and widening inequality Kay argues that the twenty-first-century corporation is facing a legitimacy crisis, as consumers are increasingly skeptical of the very entities that produce their favourite products This paradox of loving the goods while loathing the companies that make them forms a compelling narrative thread throughout the book The author's suggestion that the terminology we use to talk about business be reevaluated is one of the book's most noteworthy concepts. Though sometimes sharp-tongued, Kay’s insights are deeply thought-provoking and offer a fresh perspective on the future of business. While the book may not delve into emerging trends like artificial intelligence, it sets the stage for a much-needed conversation about the direction of modern capitalism.
For anyone interested in understanding the evolving dynamics of business and the importance of ethical leadership, “In The Corporation in the Twenty-First Century” is a must-read that promises to inspire and provoke thoughtful discussions.
India: A Linguistic Civilization by G. N. Devy Intermezzo by Sally Rooney
"India: A Linguistic Civilization" by G N Devy presents a fascinating exploration of India's linguistic diversity, revealing how languages have shaped the nation's identity across centuries The book delves into the complexity of India's civilization, focusing on the evolution of languages as the core of the
Indian experience He takes readers on a journey from the ancient Indus Valley civilization to modern India, exploring how languages have grown, adapted, and intertwined with the country's cultural, social, and intellectual history It’s a refreshing perspective that elevates language as more than just a tool for communication Devy makes the case that it is the very fabric of India's civilization G N Devy’s storytelling is both informative and engaging as he traces the rich and often hidden history of India’s languages. He explains that while cities have played their part, much of India’s knowledge and artistic expression has come from rural areas. He also emphasizes that India's linguistic diversity is not just a testament to its past, but a key element of its present identity. This book highlights the ongoing importance of language as a unifying force, while also acknowledging the inequalities and challenges faced by less-dominant languages One of the most compelling aspects of the book is its exploration of the political and cultural significance of language in India Author Devy sheds light on how languages have been shaped by migrations, colonialism, and cultural resistance, and how they continue to be linked to India's social structure and identity He passionately argues against any narrow or homogenizing view of India’s national identity, emphasizing the need to preserve endangered languages and dialects The book offers a sobering look at the threats posed by modernization and technology to linguistic diversity, but also provides hope by exploring possible ways to protect this irreplaceable heritage "India: A Linguistic Civilization" is a must-read for anyone curious about India's rich linguistic history and the role language plays in shaping identity. G.N. Devy’s passion and profound understanding make this an insightful and timely contribution to the ongoing debate about what truly constitutes the "idea of India."
Whether you're a language enthusiast or someone interested in India's cultural legacy, this book will captivate you from start to finish.
Stories that delve into a family's grief after losing a loved one, examining how their varied paths to healing uncover the depths of their love and the complexities of their relationships, are always deeply moving to read. In this connection, Sally Rooney's “Intermezzo” explores the nuances of love, loss, and family via the disparate
experiences of Peter and Ivan Koubek, two brothers, after the death of their father The older brother, Peter, uses drugs that make him sleepy to ease his grief, while Ivan, 22, seeks comfort in a new connection with an older woman This beautiful story skillfully handles the topics of grief and emotional upheaval, examining the various and insightful ways that each brother handles their common misfortune Author Rooney, known for her acute insights into modern relationships, provides a story that changes the spotlight away from romance and onto the deep tie between brothers. While her past works have generally focused on romantic relationships, "Intermezzo" takes a different approach, stressing the brothers' platonic friendship. Their opposing perspectives on love and life give a complex exploration of familial bonds, regret, and self-discovery that eventually connects strongly with readers. The viewpoints of Ivan, Peter, and Margaret Ivan's elder partner all change during the narrative Rooney's deft prose skillfully conveys each character's distinct voice, drawing readers into their individual emotional worlds The stark contrast between Peter's more objective and logical manner and Ivan's contemplative and nervous thoughts makes for an exciting story that draws readers in The authentic inner lives of the characters are further enhanced by Rooney's inventive use of language and her signature decision to omit quotation marks from dialogue "Intermezzo" is a touching family drama that depicts the progression of sibling relationships Rooney skillfully depicts the subtle bonds that hold family members together, even when their lives differ The metaphor of chess runs throughout the narrative, representing the strategic movements each brother takes in their life and reflecting their need for knowledge and connection. While there may not be a classic happily-ever-after, Rooney's endings are honest and bittersweet, providing a satisfying conclusion that represents the intricacies of everyday life. The immersive experience of spending time with these deeply formed people is unquestionably enjoyable, even though some readers may find the pacing tedious. "Intermezzo" asks readers to enter the faulty and frequently uneasy thoughts of Peter and Ivan, necessitating an openness to their insights and challenges This masterfully written book is a must-read if you're looking for something thoughtful and intensely emotional to read. Just be ready for a trip that may involve some crying along the way!
Tamil author Sukumaran’s novel “Jahanara – A novel” brings to life this remarkable woman’s untold story, drawing on the diaries she kept during her lonely years in the Mughal court Through Panipat’s perspective, Sukumaran vividly portrays
Jahanara’s internal struggles, her intellect, and the emotional toll of her family’s political conflicts. This novel stands out in Tamil literature as a powerful tribute to a princess whose legacy extends far beyond her role in Mughal history. Jahanara Begum, the eldest daughter of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, was a powerful figure known for her political influence and artistic achievements She supported her brother Dara Shikoh during the succession war and played a key role in court politics As a talented architect, she designed landmarks like the Jama Masjid and authored works including a biography of Sheikh Mu'in ad'-Din Chishti Despite her successes, her personal life was marked by emotional struggles, including unfulfilled love for Rajput king Chattar Sal and isolation in the royal court Her legacy continued under Aurangzeb, who honored her with the title "Empress of Princesses " In this captivating book by Sukumaran, translated into English by Kalaivani Karunakaran, Jahanara Begum, the eldest daughter of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, is portrayed as one of the most knowledgeable and politically savvy princesses in Mughal history. As a young girl, she offered her father insightful advice on state matters and diplomacy, skillfully navigating the intricate world of court politics. Jahanara played a pivotal role in mending the strained relationships between her father and her brothers, Dara Shikoh and Aurangzeb, all while deftly countering the manipulative schemes of her stepmother, Noor Mahal. With fluency in Persian, Sanskrit, and other languages, her intellectual curiosity also led her to explore the Quran, Vedas, and Puranas, establishing her as a true scholar of her era This book stands out in its unique approach, divided into two captivating parts: ‘Panipat’ and ‘Jahanara ’ In the first part, Panipat serves as a character who engages directly with the readers, sharing insights about Akbar’s regime and Jahanara’s story from its perspective The author skillfully takes the liberty to explore this narrative through the lens of a genderless being, shedding light on a story that many have overlooked The second part is titled as Jahanara and the story runs in her
voice. Despite her political and intellectual prowess, Jahanara's personal life was marked by great emotional turmoil. Forbidden by her grandfather Emperor Akbar’s decree from marrying or taking lovers, she was forced to suppress her deep love for the Rajput king Chattar Sal Her life was one of isolation, devoted to caring for her father and seeking companionship in her friendship with a eunuch named Panipat The constraints of Mughal tradition stifled her personal freedom, forcing her to find solace in writing and self-reflection While many authors in India often focus on women from Hindu and Greek mythology, choosing a Mughal woman like Jahanara Begum who played a significant role in India’s history makes for a unique and refreshing narrative
This fascinating and realistic portrayal offers a fresh perspective, making it a compelling read for history enthusiasts. A wonderful attempt that stands out in historical fiction!

Speaking with Nature by Ramachandra Guha
In "Speaking with Nature – The Origins of Indian Environmentalism", renowned historian Ramachandra Guha challenges the idea that environmentalism is only for the wealthy. Guha explores the deeprooted environmental consciousness in India, proving that concern for nature is not just a luxury of affluent nations
Through vivid profiles of ten influential thinkers, the book uncovers a lesser-known history of environmental movements in India, far removed from the typical narratives centred around Europe and America. These figures, including Rabindranath Tagore and J.C. Kumarappa, show how environmentalism in India is intertwined with social justice and economic survival. Author Guha’s approach brings a fresh perspective to the global environmental conversation The book introduces the concept of ‘livelihood environmentalism,’ contrasting it with the 'fullstomach environmentalism' seen in wealthier nations The individuals Guha profiles come from diverse intellectual backgrounds, contributing unique perspectives on topics ranging from wildlife conservation to the impact of industrialization Together, their work challenges conventional Western ideas of nature preservation by highlighting the inseparable link between ecological concerns and the well-being of marginalized communities in India One of the book’s strengths is how Guha brings history to life through the lives of his subjects Tagore, known primarily for his poetry, is portrayed as an environmental visionary who integrated nature into education. Kumarappa’s focus on decentralization and sustainability resonates with India’s modern vision of selfreliance, while figures like Verrier Elwin emphasize the vital connection between indigenous rights and environmental protection. Each chapter offers valuable lessons for how these pioneers influenced global conversations on environmental sustainability Though Guha celebrates the foresight of these early environmentalists, he also urges readers not to romanticize their ideas He emphasizes the need to adapt their principles to modern complexities, particularly in addressing today’s global environmental crises Overall, "Speaking with Nature" is a thoughtful, deeply researched book that offers fresh insights into India’s environmental heritage While its academic rigor may appeal more to scholars and activists, the book’s accessible language makes it an engaging read for anyone interested in environmentalism, sustainability, or India’s intellectual traditions Guha’s work is a timely reminder that the path to global sustainability must include voices from all corners of the world, particularly those who have long championed the balance between nature and human dignity.

Stone Yard Devotional by Charlotte Wood echoes her childhood. Despite her staunch atheism, she becomes entwined with the meditative rhythms of this rural sanctuary. However, her peace is soon disrupted by three unexpected events: a plague of mice, a mysterious body, and a surprise visitor, each one compelling her to confront her past and the choices that led her to this moment With her characteristic clarity and depth, Wood crafts a narrative that reads like an introspective diary The protagonist’s reflections are peppered with memories, particularly the haunting presence of her mother, who shapes her understanding of guilt and forgiveness The arrival of Helen, a classmate she once bullied, adds an extra layer of complexity, forcing the narrator to grapple with her past misdeeds This intertwining of memory and present reality creates a rich emotional landscape, drawing readers deeper into the protagonist's internal struggle The novel is not driven by a conventional plot; instead, it weaves together themes of escape, guilt, and the search for redemption Wood expertly captures the tension between the desire for solitude and the weight of unresolved past traumas. Stress to Zest by Aritra Sarkar
Shanti: You know, stress actually triggers the release of cortisol, which is this hormone that messes with your memory, focus, and decision-making.
Ashanti: Really? So that’s why I feel so scattered when I’m stressed.
Shanti: Exactly And it doesn’t stop there
cortisol also increases anxiety and feelings of sadness The worst part is, if you’re stressed for a long time, it can actually shrink the part of your brain that helps you manage emotions Ashanti: That sounds serious So stress literally changes your brain?
Shanti: Yep, and it makes the part of your brain that handles fear more active, which just makes you feel even more anxious. Over time, it all adds up, making you feel exhausted and like it’s harder to deal with everyday stuff.
Ashanti: Wow, no wonder stress feels like a vicious cycle. How can I escape from this?
Shanti: There are plenty of ways to reduce stress, like exercising or spending time in nature. But I get that with a busy, stressful life, simpler options might be more appealing One option is to talk to a professional, but an even easier way could be picking up a good book that explains stress and offers practical ways to overcome it Do want to read such a book?

book, and second 'Burgess Boys' book, delivers a unique crossover experience for Strout's longtime fans. Familiar faces like Olive, Lucy, and Bob take center stage, drawing readers into their reflective and intimate lives, while sharing stories about the people and places that shaped them. The plot revolves around Bob Burgess, a retired lawyer who is struggling with his own self-perception. Bob has never been very self-aware, but his blossoming friendship with Lucy Barton allows him to see himself in a more positive, forgiving perspective Bob and Lucy stroll along Crosby, Maine's shoreline, sharing intimate conversations, family news, and secrets, bringing peace and understanding to one another Through these discussions, Bob gradually comes to accept himself as the intelligent, kind-hearted man he is While Bob’s journey is central to the novel, Strout also weaves in the vibrant voices of Lucy Barton and Olive Kitteridge Their periodic chats, filled with stories of "unrecorded lives" ordinary people facing loss, love, and loneliness add a poignant, sometimes gossipy layer to the narrative Though this framing device may feel distracting to some, it’s classic Strout: tender, introspective, and full of emotional depth However, it can be a bit polarizing, as the conversations between Lucy and Olive occasionally shift focus away from Bob's more compelling storyline. Author Strout’s trademark style shines through in "Tell Me Everything", blending sparse, homey narration with moments of raw, emotional intensity. As Bob grapples with his relationships with his brother, his exwife, and even his childhood trauma readers witness a deeply nuanced character development. His boiling frustrations, usually hidden beneath his calm demeanor, erupt in unexpected moments, adding a new dimension to his laidback persona It’s these emotional layers that make Bob such an unforgettable character, and his evolution throughout the novel is one of its highlights For longtime fans of Elizabeth Strout, "Tell Me Everything" is a heartfelt reunion with characters they’ve come to love While the book may not be the best entry point for new readers, those familiar with Strout’s world will relish the intricate connections and tender moments shared between Lucy, Bob, and Olive
It’s a bittersweet, thought-provoking novel about the importance of being heard, being remembered, and, ultimately, being seen for who we truly are
The Adventures of Tom Bombadil by J.R.R. Tolkien
“The Adventures of Tom Bombadil “ is a delightful 1962 collection of poems by the legendary J R R Tolkien Best known for his epic tales of Middle-earth, Tolkien’s poetic prowess truly shines in this collection, which consists of 16 charming poems Two of these focus on Tom
Bombadil, one of Tolkien’s most mysterious and whimsical characters, while the rest of the poems explore themes of folklore, fantastical creatures, and atmospheric storytelling. Originally illustrated by the talented Pauline Baynes, the book takes readers on a light-hearted journey through Tolkien’s enchanting world. In the preface, Tolkien frames these poems as translations from the ‘Red Book of Westmarch’, giving them a fictional backstory that ties them into the rich lore of Middleearth According to this lore, the poems are part of Hobbit folklore and were preserved in the margins of the Red Book Some are attributed to characters like Bilbo Baggins and Sam Gamgee These connections add a layer of depth for fans of ‘The Lord of the Rings’, with subtle hints of Gondor’s history and Shire traditions woven into the verses The poems are arranged in thematic pairs, from the adventures of Tom Bombadil to encounters with trolls, faeries, and even the Man in the Moon There are also bestiary-inspired verses that introduce readers to mythical creatures of Middle-earth, along with a few atmospheric and emotional poems The standout piece, "The Mewlips," defies categorization and serves as a haunting interlude in the collection. This clever arrangement makes for a varied and engaging reading experience, each poem offering something new while staying true to Tolkien’s unique vision. Tolkien’s journey to create this collection was filled with challenges, particularly in fitting the poems together as a cohesive whole. Originally written as separate works, many of the poems were revised and reworked to better align with Hobbit-lore. While Tolkien himself doubted the value of some older verses, he took great pleasure in revisiting and improving them Baynes’ illustrations add a magical touch, bringing the whimsical nature of the poems to life Despite some differences in artistic vision, Tolkien credited Baynes' work as a major factor in the book’s success “The Adventures of Tom Bombadil” offers a fresh glimpse into Tolkien’s genius, blending poetry, humor, and Middle-earth mythology in a captivating way Whether you're a die-hard Tolkien fan or a newcomer, this collection is sure to charm you with its enchanting verses and delightful illustrations
It’s a whimsical escape to a world of magic, mystery, and playful storytelling that will leave readers smiling long after they’ve turned the last page
The Blanket Cats by Kiyoshi
Shigematsu
and Jesse Kirkwood
Kiyoshi Shigematsu’s “The Blanket Cats”, translated by Jesse Kirkwood, offers a whimsical yet poignant glimpse into the lives of people who rent cats for a few days, exploring the emotional crossroads they face The narrative unfolds through a series of interconnected stories, each featuring a
different cat that serves as a comforting presence for its temporary owner These feline companions come with a catch: they must never be separated from their cherished blankets, which they’ve grown up with. This charming premise sets the stage for a unique exploration of human connection, loneliness, and the complexities of life choices. The book is structured as a collection of linked short stories, each beginning at the cat rental shop. As readers journey through the tales, they encounter various individuals seeking solace or clarity in their lives, ranging from a childless couple contemplating adding a furry friend to their family to a family coping with job loss while trying to create lasting memories Each cat’s presence coincides with significant decisions, making them more than mere plot devices; they become symbols of comfort amid uncertainty At its best, “The Blanket Cats” can be both thoughtprovoking and heartwarming Standout stories, like ‘The Cat in the Passenger Seat,’ delve deep into the emotional landscape of the characters, revealing layers of complexity in their relationships Similarly, ‘The Cat Who Knew How to Pretend’ showcases the lengths a family will go to in order to bring joy to a loved one in a nursing home, emphasizing themes of love and sacrifice While the stories provide moments of genuine reflection, some feel formulaic, and the blanket cat concept occasionally comes across as gimmicky. Overall, “The Blanket Cats” is a delightful read that masterfully blends uplifting and heartbreaking moments. While the market for Japanese cat-themed literature is becoming increasingly competitive, Shigematsu's collection stands out for its relatable characters and engaging narratives.
This book is a wonderful choice for anyone looking for a mix of magical realism and emotional depth, making it a compelling addition to the shelves of both cat lovers and readers seeking a meaningful story.

The Full Moon Coffee Shop by Mai
Mochizuki and Jesse Kirkwood
"The Full Moon Coffee Shop" by Japanese author Mai Mochizuki is a delightful novel that feels like sitting down with a warm cup of coffee on a cozy evening Translated from Japanese into English by Jesse Kirkwood, it tells the enchanting story of how people's lives intertwine, blending the
past with the present This short yet captivating read offers a soft and sweet journey, filled with delectable desserts, magical drinks, and plenty of talking cats Astrology also plays a significant role, which may be a bit tricky for some readers, but it cleverly connects each character to the story It's a novel that’s easy to sink into, much like a comforting conversation over a cup of coffee The story is divided into three chapters, each focusing on different characters whose lives are delicately linked. The first two chapters explore the lives of two women who once worked together, though only one knows how deeply connected they are. The third chapter introduces two more characters, who share ties with the earlier women. Despite the shifting focus, the novel masterfully weaves their lives together, highlighting the roles they played in each other’s pasts and how their present challenges lead them to the magical Full Moon Coffee Shop a place owned by talking cats who read the stars This coffee shop becomes a sanctuary for the characters, helping them to overcome their hurdles and find peace The book’s large font and spacious layout make for an engaging and comfortable reading experience And, the occasional illustrations between the chapters add a charming touch, making the book even more visually appealing The Full Moon Coffee Shop itself is a wonder It appears only on full moons, and not just anyone can find it The characters stumble upon it when they need guidance or a push in the right direction The cats who run the shop are unapologetically bold, just as one might imagine talking cats to be, offering advice through astrology and their celestial magic While the astrological aspect can be a bit heavy at first, it adds an interesting layer to the story, connecting the characters’ lives in ways that make sense as the plot progresses. The cats, however, are the real stars charming and forthright, they add a unique and whimsical touch to the novel. The human characters are just as compelling. Mizuki, a once-famous scriptwriter, struggles with the fading relevance of her work, while Akari, her former colleague, faces romantic troubles and an unexpected connection to Mizuki By the end of the novel, the reader is left with a heartwarming sense of closure, as the final connection between all the characters is revealed in a beautifully mistyeyed moment "The Full Moon Coffee Shop" is a quick yet fulfilling read, perfect for those who love sweet, thoughtful stories with a touch of magic.
The Horde by Marie Favereau
“The Horde: How the Mongols Changed the World” by Marie Favereau offers a refreshing and deeply researched exploration of the Mongol Empire, with a focus on the Golden Horde. Moving beyond the common view of the Mongols as just conquerors, Favereau delves into the complexities of their empire, highlighting
their roles as city builders, diplomats, and innovative economic thinkers. This compelling history spans 300 years and showcases how the Mongols’ influence stretched from Europe to the Middle East, leaving a profound legacy that continues to shape our world today. Author Favereau takes readers inside the Golden Horde, which thrived after the death of Genghis Khan under the leadership of his grandson, Batu Khan. The Horde was more than just a military power; it became a central force in Eurasian trade, driving economic and cultural exchanges across vast territories From their capital at Sarai, the Mongols managed an efficient and mobile empire that was organized and adaptable They fostered political stability, religious tolerance, and innovative governance, which influenced Russia, Central Asia, and the broader Islamic world One of the most fascinating aspects of this book is how Favereau dismantles the stereotypical image of the Mongols as barbaric invaders Instead, she presents them as a dynamic and pluralistic society that integrated with the regions they ruled The Golden Horde was not just about conquest but about fostering trade, diplomacy, and cultural exchange Favereau also sheds light on their ecological challenges, which played a significant role in limiting their westward expansion, often overlooked in traditional narratives. While the book provides an in-depth look at the political and economic mechanisms of the Horde, it also touches on darker aspects like the trade in enslaved people, which Favereau rightly refers to as "human trafficking." This nuanced approach avoids idealizing the Mongols, giving readers a balanced view of their civilization. The Golden Horde's nomadic governance, which allowed flexibility and adaptability, offers a fascinating counterpoint to the sedentary states it interacted with, showing how their system fostered a stable and prosperous empire This book is a must-read for anyone interested in Mongol history or world history in general
Rich in detail and analysis, “The Horde” is a captivating read that will leave readers with a newfound appreciation for the Mongol Empire's lasting impact on global history.

The Lost Flamingoes of Bombay by Siddharth
Dhanvant Shanghvi
In "The Lost Flamingoes of Bombay," talented photographer Karan Seth embarks on a journey to uncover Bombay's hidden treasures. But when he gets sucked into a world of politics, crime, and sex, his journey takes an unexpected turn. Demoralized by the situation he finds himself in, Karan
leaves Bombay and heads to England. But when he comes back, the city is calling him back, just like the flamingos that come and go through Sewri This insightful book explores the complexities of contemporary urban life, the importance of friendship, and the nature of love This is Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi's second book The story is centered on an engrossing cast of individuals Zaira, a stunning Bollywood actress, and Samar, a once-famous pianist living in seclusion with his American boyfriend, join Karan Their fascinating lives collide and explore many aspects of love, from friendship to intense relationships Accompanying them is Rhea, a married lady who gave up her aspirations for her craft to support her spouse As they work through their challenges, each character reveals the complexity of interpersonal connections and the decisions that shape them The title, "The Lost Flamingoes of Bombay," is an excellent metaphor for the city's magnetic pull. The flamingos that swarm to Sewri's mudflats symbolize how Bombay captures the hearts of people who have witnessed its bright disarray. Despite its flaws, the city enchants its inhabitants, bringing them back time and again. This theme runs throughout the novel, highlighting the powerful pull of love, ambition, and the desire to belong. Tragic occurrences deepen the plot and culminate in a murder that is reminiscent of actual events. This surprise ups the drama, but at times it comes across as heightened, which makes it hard to empathize with the characters' experiences The way that Minister Prasad, the antagonist, and political corruption are portrayed has a cartoonish quality that could take away from the story's authenticity The book offers moving observations on love, loneliness, and the effects of city living on interpersonal relationships despite these narrative difficulties Finally, "The Lost Flamingoes of Bombay" provides a thought-provoking examination of its protagonists' emotional landscapes While some story points may fall flat for mature writing, the book is filled with thoughts that will stay with you long after you finish reading it
Karan's return to Bombay serves as a reminder of the city's eternal energy, making this novel a must-read for anybody who enjoys nuanced storytelling interwoven with the complexity of love and life.
The Lucky Ones by Zara Chowdhary "The Lucky Ones" by Zara Chowdhary is a poignant and powerful memoir that recounts her personal experience surviving the 2002 anti-Muslim violence in Gujarat, India With a delicate blend of family history and political commentary, Chowdhary’s story sheds light on the horrors faced by India’s Muslim community while honoring
the resilience of women who hold their families together in the face of both external and internal struggles. This is a story of survival, loss, and hope, offering readers a glimpse into India’s complex and often painful social landscape. The book's plot is about the author Zara Chowdhary’s life in Ahmedabad, where she grew up before her world was shattered by the 2002 pogrom Instead of attending school exams, she found herself in lockdown with her family, living in fear as religious violence raged around them Chowdhary’s intimate portrayal of the violence juxtaposes these horrifying events with the daily oppression faced within her patriarchal household, adding layers of personal struggle to the broader socio-political turmoil Her memoir doesn’t just focus on the violence itself but also highlights moments of unity and shared culture, like dancing during Navratri and learning Sanskrit, which briefly allowed her to feel a sense of belonging However, this fleeting sense of integration is overshadowed by a growing sense of exclusion, as the very city she calls home turns into a battleground against her community. The tension between these experiences makes the memoir both heartbreaking and thought-provoking. The book is as much a tribute to the women in Zara Chowdhary’s family as it is a chronicle of survival. Her mother and sister emerge as pillars of strength, their bond becoming a source of grace in an otherwise hostile world. This heartfelt depiction of familial love, especially the resilience of women in times of crisis, makes *The Lucky Ones* not only a story of survival but also a testament to the enduring power of love and hope amidst the chaos With lyrical prose and unflinching honesty, "The Lucky Ones" is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the challenges faced by India’s Muslim community in recent history It’s a story of survival, a protest against the erasure of India’s Muslim population, and a love letter to the women who carry their families through the darkest times
Readers will find themselves deeply moved by the author’s courage and the haunting beauty of her words
"The Mercy of Gods", the first book in the 'Captive’s War' series, by authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Frank better known as James S A Corey delves into a gripping tale where humanity faces off against the omnipotent alien race known as the Carryx. On the planet Anjiin, the invasion
The Mercy of Gods by James S A Corey of these god-like beings devastates the local population, leaving behind a group of elite scientists, including research assistant Dafyd Alkhor, who must navigate life under the shadow of their new captors. While the Carryx may seem indifferent, their reign is anything but merciful, creating a world brimming with tension and fear. Breaking away from the fast-paced action that characterized 'The Expanse'(previous novel), this novel takes a more measured approach, emphasizing rich world-building over characterdriven plotlines The Carryx emerge as formidable antagonists, their chilling nature and vast superiority overshadowing the human characters, whose development feels somewhat lacking by comparison Dafyd, the central figure, struggles to match the complexity of iconic characters from the authors' previous works, leaving readers wanting more depth in the personal stakes of this new narrative Nonetheless, the world itself is vividly crafted, immersing readers in a setting that feels both expansive and oppressive What truly stands out is the exploration of human relationships and ethical dilemmas in a high-stakes environment The narrative cleverly contrasts the characters' academic lives before the invasion with their desperate struggle for survival afterward As they are forced to prove their worth to the Carryx, the scientists’ motivations and connections evolve, revealing the intricacies of their personalities and the complexities of their interactions under duress. This thematic depth adds layers to the story, showcasing the often-overlooked human side of science in a universe dominated by aliens. "The Mercy of Gods" presents an engaging premise filled with imaginative world-building and a haunting portrayal of an alien invasion. While the character arcs may not hit the highs as expected, the novel successfully captures the essence of survival against overwhelming odds
With its thoughtful exploration of relationships and the moral questions posed by captivity, this new series promises to be an exciting journey, leaving readers eager to see where the next book in the series.

the story unfolds, the pair is forced apart by fate, with Rabbit joining a monastery and Squirrel navigating the pressures of an unwanted marriage. Despite their separation, their bond remains deeply rooted in understanding and shared experiences, making their reunion both poignant and tragic. Enhanced by Stina Wirsén's beautiful illustrations, this novella offers a heartfelt exploration of love, loss, and selfdiscovery. One of the most striking aspects of the novella is its exploration of life's deeper meanings. Both characters are on a quest for happiness and purpose, but their journeys are marked by disillusionment Rabbit’s monastic life and Squirrel’s domestic struggles reflect the tension between societal expectations and individual fulfillment The story is also an ode to the enduring pleasures of friendship, and Shanghvi’s delicate prose brings this theme to life Their witty exchanges mask a sense of loss and longing, reminding readers that true companionship often comes with its own set of challenges The story's melancholy tone may not suit every reader’s mood, as it tugs at the heartstrings with its meditations on unfulfilled desires and the weight of societal norms Shanghvi’s writing, while undeniably beautiful, often leaves readers with a lingering sense of sadness However, this emotional depth is precisely what makes the book so compelling. It’s a short read, yet it packs a punch with its poetic reflections on love, friendship, and the passage of time. For those who enjoy thoughtful and introspective stories, The Rabbit and the Squirrel will undoubtedly resonate. In conclusion, "The Rabbit and the Squirrel" is a modern-day fairy tale that combines wit, emotion, and timeless wisdom. The Story of Lala by Sergio Scapagnini
This Strange Eventful History by
Claire Messud
A brutally honest story, offering at times a detached look at a family adrift one of many in the last century who were forced to leave their homeland and never fully found a place to call home again leaves a lasting impact. In similar lines, "This Strange Eventful History", Claire Messud
crafts a sweeping family saga that traces the lives of the Cassar family over seven tumultuous decades, from World War II to the early 21st century. At the heart of the novel is the theme of displacement, as the Cassars French colonial settlers, or "pieds-noirs" find themselves uprooted from their home in Algeria and scattered across the world after Algerian independence. Messud delves into the family's struggles to find a sense of belonging while navigating the complex political and social landscapes of the time. Though rooted in historical events, the novel is, above all, a story about family, love, and the weight of memory Author Claire Messud gives each member of the Cassar family their own narrative space, bringing their inner lives to the forefront of the story The patriarch, Gaston, and his wife, Lucienne, are bound by a myth of perfect love that suffocates their children Their son François embarks on a cross-cultural marriage with Barbara, a relationship fraught with misunderstanding due to their vastly different backgrounds Meanwhile, their daughter Denise battles her own challenges as she struggles to reconcile her French identity with her life in exile At the center of it all is Chloe, François and Barbara’s daughter, who seeks to uncover her family's buried stories, believing that by doing so, she can bring them peace. She skillfully intertwines the personal and political, as the Cassar family's experiences mirror the broader historical events that shaped the 20th century. The novel opens during World War II, with Gaston serving in Greece as Paris falls to the Germans. Later, the family is torn apart again by the Algerian War of Independence, leaving them without a homeland. These events weigh heavily on the characters, influencing their decisions and shaping their identities
The author uses the family's journey to explore themes of exile, cultural alienation, and the search for identity in a rapidly changing world Drawing from her family’s history, Claire Messud brings a deeply personal touch to the novel The story is filled with moments of emotional intensity as the characters grapple with feelings of displacement, loss, and the desire for connection. The narrative shifts between various perspectives, allowing the reader to experience the Cassar family's joys, regrets, and internal conflicts. Chloe, in particular, stands out as the voice that bridges the past and the present, seeking to heal the wounds left by her family’s long history of exile and separation. Longlisted for the Booker Prize, "This Strange Eventful History" is a beautifully written, multi-layered novel that explores the complex intersections between history, family, and personal identity Through the lens of the Cassar family, Author Messud examines the universal themes of loss, belonging, and the lasting effects of displacement Rich with historical detail and emotional depth, this novel offers a poignant reflection on how our lives are shaped by the forces of history, and the enduring power of family ties, even when stretched across time and distance
It’s a moving and thought-provoking read for anyone interested in how the personal and political intertwine across generations
Under the Night Jasmine by Manav Kaul and Vaibhav Sharma
“Under the Night Jasmine”, by author Manav Kaul and translated from Hindi into English by Vaibhav Sharma weave a complex tapestry of self-doubt, lost love, and memories that resonate through the shadows of magical realism This novel challenges readers to fully engage with
every word, savouring the language like a gourmet meal It poses a profound question: “Can you solve the problems of your life in your own stories? Writing is like an apology to those who we know will never forgive us.” This thoughtprovoking line encapsulates the essence of the narrative, inviting readers to reflect on their own experiences. Set against the backdrop of the COVID lockdown, we follow Rohit, a script consultant and poet whose life has come to a standstill. Confined to his home, he grapples with his mental health, haunted by memories and the weight of time The isolation forces him to confront his past, including his childhood loss of home in Kashmir, which casts a long shadow over his present The narrative unfolds with an introspective depth that captures the turmoil of a mind caught between reality and imagination Rohit’s interactions with a few key characters, like the persistent Pawan and the enigmatic Antima who shares a complicated history with him add layers to his internal struggle Kaul expertly explores the nature of memory and identity, revealing how trauma can distort reality Vaibhav Sharma’s translation deserves special mention The prose flows seamlessly, making it difficult to discern that it’s a translated work Wrapped in elements of magical realism, the story comes alive in unexpected ways. Moments like Rohit spotting a deer in unlikely places provide a whimsical touch, blending fantasy with the starkness of his reality. The tension between Rohit’s desire to connect and his instinct to retreat showcases the challenges of introversion and the complexities of human relationships during uncertain times. Author Manav Kaul’s vivid descriptions, such as equating kisses with picking petals, elevate the romance to a dreamlike quality The poetry interspersed throughout the novel deepens the emotional landscape, allowing readers to experience Rohit’s journey as both a poet and a person navigating his tumultuous thoughts
With its rich themes of love, trauma, and the search for identity, “Under the Night Jasmine” is a captivating read that invites reflection and connection, making it a must-read for anyone seeking depth and beauty in literature.

Mackie utilizes The Sleuth's voyage to mock society's obsession with unsolved crimes and the internet's ability to support even the most outrageous conspiracy theories "What a Way to Go" is especially amusing because of its caustic tone and stinging wit Despite the fact that the ensemble of characters is mostly self-centered and unlikable, Mackie's writing keeps readers engaged In conclusion, "What a Way to Go" is an entertaining, fast-paced story that combines family drama and a murder mystery, all wrapped up in dark humor and eccentric characters Bella Mackie's sharp dialogue and distinct writing will appeal to fans of both crime fiction and dark humor It's a thrilling read that will keep you smiling, speculating, and finally satisfied even if certain riddles remain unsolved Highly recommended for readers searching for something entertaining, snappy, and unexpected!

WiFi
and Wisdom by Neelam Kumar and Rajveer Kumar
"WiFi and Wisdom: Connecting with Teens" by Neelam Kumar and Rajveer Kumar explores the generational divide between tech-savvy youth and their traditional grandparents through the perspectives of Rajveer, a Gen Z grandson, and his Boomer grandmother,
Neelam Addressing issues like technology’s impact on relationships and personal growth, the book emphasizes bridging the gap between generations by fostering understanding and communication It showcases how both sides can learn from each other's experiences, blending the challenges of modern life with the wisdom older generations offer. In the book’s preface, the author provides an insightful 'table that outlines the different names for various generations', offering readers a framework for understanding how each generation has evolved in response to changing cultural, social, and technological landscapes.
This context sets the stage for the deeper exploration of the generational divide that follows in the subsequent chapters. This thoughtful preface establishes the book’s central theme: while each generation has its own distinct challenges, understanding these differences is key to bridging the gaps and fostering healthier relationships across all age groups In the opening chapter, the author dives into some of the most pressing concerns of our digital age, such as 'juice jacking', the 'pros and cons of social media', and the complexity of maintaining relationships in the 'real vs virtual worlds; Social media platforms, while offering connection, also expose youth to **online bullying**, **cyber hacking**, and 'blackmailing', which are serious issues that threaten mental well-being One of the most striking aspects of this chapter is the focus on the 'generation gap between parents and teenagers', particularly how this divide has grown with the advancement of technology.
The author points to the 'effects of the COVID-19 pandemic', highlighting how isolation and lack of physical interaction exacerbated loneliness, especially among the older generation. The chapter draws attention to various global studies and articles that emphasize the 'harms of loneliness', portraying it as an urgent, yet often overlooked, social issue.
The author's background as a life coach is evident here, as she brings her extensive experience to bear on the psychological impact of 'toxic families' on children’s mental health By doing so, she offers insights that are both compassionate and thought-provoking, making this chapter a powerful reflection on how modern life shapes our emotional landscapes The second chapter examines teenage stress, a growing issue in today’s fast-paced world
Drawing on advice from renowned experts, the author provides practical solutions for both teenagers and their guardians. Quality family time is emphasized as a critical component in stress management, alongside the need for open communication between family members.
One of the key strengths of this chapter is its use of 'subjective and explanatory illustrations', which make the guidance more relatable for readers. The book also promotes 'physical exercise' particularly practices like 'yoga' as well as the benefits of 'counselling' to manage stress and improve mental well-being The message is clear: both teenagers and their support systems must work together to create a balanced, healthy lifestyle In the third chapter, the author shifts gears, offering readers a nostalgic glimpse into life in the '1970s'
Through engaging conversations between Gran and Rajveer, readers are taken on a journey through a time when life moved at a slower pace, filled with fun, education, and deep connections with nature The chapter explores the experience of growing up with adults and big families, reflecting on how these relationships influenced personal development One memorable anecdote comes from Gran’s explanation of the 'importance of patience', contrasting it with the instant reactions that have become the norm in today’s world. The mention of 'Binaca Geet Mala', a popular radio program, adds another layer of charm, connecting readers to the era’s music and pop culture.
The 70s fashion, along with the gradual introduction of Western influences through English music and films, marks a period of cultural transition that shaped modern Indian cinema and society The fourth chapter delves into the lives of Generation Z, those aged between 12 and 19 The author presents a wide range of perspectives, providing readers with a comprehensive look at the hopes, struggles, and aspirations of today’s youth Through these voices, the book examines the unique challenges this generation faces, particularly in a world dominated by technology, social media, and a rapidly changing global landscape
Shifting focus once again, the fifth chapter is dedicated to 'Millennials', a generation that has grown up in an era of unprecedented technological and societal change The author reflects on the defining characteristics of this group, exploring how they balance **work, relationships, and personal growth** in an increasingly competitive world.
The later chapters dive into other generations, offering insightful ways to bridge the gap between them for a more positive and harmonious life. The role of AI in teens' lives is also explored, shedding light on both its benefits and challenges.
To sum up, "WiFi and Wisdom: Connecting with Teens" by Neelam Kumar highlights key strategies for bridging generational gaps. It urges parents and grandparents to understand generational differences, foster open communication, engage in shared activities, and improve tech literacy to connect with teens The book emphasizes the importance of spending quality time and promotes mutual learning between generations to strengthen relationships in today’s digital age
Storizen team strongly recommends this book for its valuable perspectives and practical guidance. Notable quote: As a teen memorably said, “They are our best band-aid!”
