In this insightful interview, author Preeti Shenoy takes us deeper into the world of Alka, the complex and compelling protagonist from her previous novel A Place Called Home, with the release of its sequel, The Homecoming As Alka’s journey continues, Shenoy explores the intricacies of love, loyalty, and sacrifice, unraveling the emotional and moral dilemmas that define her character With her signature storytelling style, Shenoy delves into the themes of buried secrets, the weight of responsibility, and the search for identity, all set against the evocative backdrop of a coffee estate In this conversation, she shares her creative process, her approach to developing Alka's character, and the inspiration behind the narrative that resonates so deeply with her readers.

"The Homecoming" delves deeper into Alka’s life after 'A Place Called Home', continuing Alka's journey. What inspired you to revisit her story, and how did you approach developing her character further in this sequel?

Some love stories don’t end they linger, evolve, and grow deeper Alka and Krish’s story is one such tale Alka’s decision to walk away from Krish and marry his brother, Subbu, was poignant, yet provocative It was a choice that tied her even closer to Krish, making her life an intricate web of love, duty, and suppressed emotions

To understand Alka’s choices, we need to delve into her past the insecurities of being a maid’s daughter with no financial stability, her deep yearning for ‘a place to called home’, and the price she had to pay to achieve it set the tone for a very complex story. Her struggles shaped her into a fascinating character-- ruthless in her ambitions yet deeply empathetic, loving and efficient as a mother, loyal as a wife, and yet deeply human in her own unspoken needs and desires.

What happens to love when it is buried under the weight of responsibility? Can it truly be silenced, or does it lie dormant, waiting for the right moment to emerge? These questions compelled me to revisit her story Alka is one of the most

layered characters I’ve written her dualities, conflicts, and desires needed to be explored further. With The Homecoming, I was able to dive deeper into her world, bringing her journey full circle while uncovering new dimensions of her character

This novel highlights intricate human emotions and relationships, particularly Alka’s bond with Subbu and her feelings for Krish. How did you balance the themes of loyalty, love, and betrayal to keep the story relatable and emotionally impactful?

All of us navigate similar choices in life Being married to someone doesn’t mean you’ll never feel attracted to someone else it’s a human reality that many of us silently grapple with. In India, especially, family often takes precedence over everything else. It can be incredibly challenging to maintain your individuality while fulfilling familial expectations. In doing so, we sometimes lose a part of ourselves, and this quiet sense of loss is what I wanted to explore through Alka’s journey.

At the same time, human desires don’t simply disappear We yearn for what we want, and at some point, we’re faced with a critical question: when do we start listening to our own hearts, even if it means embracing a love that feels forbidden? Alka’s choices are born not only from this inner conflict but also the situations she goes through and the curveballs life throws her t Her journey is a reflection of the push and pull between duty and desire It makes us realise as universal truth –that in the end, we are all flawed, imperfect beings

When Alka makes her choices, we understand her We don’t judge her, because life often places us in situations that make us do things we never thought we were capable of. That’s the beauty of being human the unpredictability, the vulnerability, and the way circumstances shape our decisions. I wanted to capture this complexity in a way that felt honest and relatable, and I’m glad that Alka’s story resonates with these emotions.

When the past unravels, can love hold the future together? Alka’s seemingly idyllic life—living in a heritage bungalow on her husband Subbu’s coffee estate with their two daughters—comes crashing down after Subbu’s near-fatal accident. As hidden truths emerge, the façade of perfection shatters, leaving Alka torn between salvaging her strained marriage and confronting the long-buried love she feels for her brother-in-law, Krish. Balancing her husband’s care and the struggle to save their crumbling estate, Alka faces a harrowing choice that could either mend hearts or destroy lives. In this powerful sequel to A Place Called Home, Preeti Shenoy’s The Homecoming delves into love, betrayal, and the dangerous secrets we keep from ourselves.

The book addresses the weight of buried secrets and how they shape lives. How did you approach writing about the consequences of these revelations, and what message do you hope readers take away about love and forgiveness?

Secrets are fascinating because they have the power to protect and destroy in equal measure. In The Homecoming, I focused on how these buried truths impact the characters' relationships and their sense of self. Writing about their consequences required a lot of introspection, empathy and getting into my own head in a way I never have done before I wanted to show not just the pain but also the liberation that can come from facing the truth and accepting what we truly feel I hope readers walk away with a deeper understanding of themselves and I hope it makes them reflect on the choices they gave made in the lives, and that they have gained from it I also hope they see how love and acceptance can heal even the deepest wounds

The coffee estate and its surroundings play a significant role in the story, almost becoming a character. What was your creative process for bringing the setting to life, and why was it important to the story?

I’ve always been fascinated by coffee estates. Growing up, my father’s job in Karnataka often involved traveling to small towns, and some of my fondest childhood memories are from those journeys. During our summer vacations, he would take us along. My brother and I would sit in the back seat of the Ambassador car while my mother sat in the front With no seat belts back then, we’d gleefully slide from one end of the seat to the other, shouting “Wheee!” as he expertly navigated the hairpin bends Those vivid memories left a deep impression on me, with the lush greenery and

serene beauty of the coffee estates becoming an indelible part of my happy memories. For The Homecoming, I revisited these estates many times to bring authenticity to the story I traveled to places like Sakleshpur and Chikmagalur, where the novel is set, spoke to coffee planters, and immersed myself in their world I made extensive notes, observed the daily life on the plantations, and incorporated small details that I learned through conversations with people who’ve lived and worked there for generations

The biggest compliment I received was from the grandfather of one of my daughter’s friends a seasoned coffee planter who told me the depiction felt incredibly authentic Hearing that reassured me that the effort I put into researching, traveling, and understanding this world truly paid off.

The setting was more than just a backdrop; it was integral to the story. The isolation of the estate mirrored Alka’s emotional journey, while its beauty and tranquillity contrasted with the turmoil within her. Thus, the coffee estate became a character in its own right, shaping the narrative and adding depth to the themes of belonging, escape, and introspection

Your readers often praise how your writing makes them feel part of the story. How do you ensure that even minor details like interiors or daily life on the estate resonate so deeply with your audience? And how does reader feedback influence your work?

For me, the details make all the difference Whether it’s the texture of a curtain swaying in the breeze or the rhythmic sound of coffee beans being sorted, I have always strived to create scenes that feel vivid and immersive. It requires careful observation and

Pic: Preeti Shenoy, Author, The Homecoming

weaving sensory elements into the narrative in a way that enhances the story without overpowering it

I’m also an artist I paint and sketch scenes from life, a practice that demands immense focus Without realizing it, this habit has deeply influenced my writing, sharpening my ability to notice and capture the small yet significant details that bring a story to life I’ve always been a naturally observant person, even as a child, and this trait has probably played a role in shaping my storytelling

As for reader feedback, while I’m crafting a narrative, I don’t consciously think about it. When I’m immersed in writing, my sole focus is on making the story as authentic and true to the characters as possible. But once the book is out, I’m always deeply moved by how much it resonates with readers. Their connection to the story and their love for my work means the world to me. Therefore it is not so much that reader feedback influences my writing directly, but it does so indirectly as it fills me with immense gratitude My readers are incredibly supportive they wait eagerly for my books, bring thoughtful gifts, and shower me with love Knowing that my words have touched their lives is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a writer, and I feel truly blessed to have such a loyal and loving audience

What is the most recent book you’ve read, and what are your thoughts on it?

I read a lot and share book reviews on my Instagram highlights, where I’ve reviewed over 200 books so far. Instead of the most recent book, I’d love to mention my top five reads of the year:

Untamed by Glennon Doyle: A powerful exploration of breaking free from societal expectations.

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin: A beautiful story of friendship and creativity

Strange Sally Diamond by Liz Nugent: A dark and gripping tale that stayed with me

Pic: Preeti Shenoy,

Rabbit and Squirrel and The Last Song of Dusk by Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi: Both are poignant, lyrical, and deeply moving What I Talk About When I Talk About

Running by Haruki Murakami: As I’ve recently taken up running, this resonated with me on many levels.

nil buzzed the doorbell repeatedly, while his feet tapped the ground to the rhythm of a jolly song he kept crooning Resembling a tiny bird that made abrupt, sharp movements with antsy eyes, he rehearsed how he’d break the news of his promotion to his wife, Sujata a raise that was well-earned, an outcome of several fair–unfair competitions

He kept striking the calling bell with his index finger, but there was no response A dog sleeping on the road lifted its head and indulged in a prolonged howl

Inserting the duplicate key in the lock, he turned the handle of the door while wondering where Sujata and his 8-year-old son, Rupesh, had gone He threw himself in, banged the door, switched on the lights, and glanced at his wristwatch 10 o’clock

The living room seemed to be somewhat different than usual sofa sets having creased covers, a pack of cards cluttering the center table, books from the wooden shelf strewn on the floor contrary to the impeccably bright, cheerful condition that he always boasted of What was wrong that day?

He tried to look for his mobile phone, but couldn’t find it. He rushed toward the landline telephone that sat on a table near the bookshelf. It was out of order.

“Must have left my mobile phone in the car.”

As he was about to step out of the house, the visitor’s bell rang

“That should be Sujata and Rupesh Must have been at our neighbors’ place ”

He opened the door to an extremely attractive, young lady Along with her, a gust of cool midDecember wind almost swept him off his feet

“Hi!”

With a shudder, he turned away from staring at the lady, conscious of observing a maiden of singular beauty, and asked quizzically, “How can I help you?”

The lady pretended not to notice the civility and proceeded toward a single sofa

Who are you?” Anil’svoice felt harsh on his ears.

“Have a seat! Calm down, dear!” The lady said.

Anil’s obedient eyes followed till he settled on the big sofa in the middle of the room

“I’m Nikita Don’t you remember me? We were in college together ”

“What brings you here?” Anil enquired with the sternness of a police officer, unable to recall any such name that might have been a friend or an acquaintance

“Slowly, dear slowly Is this the way you greet your guest?’

“Look, I’ve some serious matter to handle at the moment It would be nice if you please excuse me today ”

“Oh! Perhaps we can resolve this serious matter together

After all, we have been lovers at one point of time Your pain, my pain sort of love!” Nikita winked one of those naughty, girlish gestures that made him uneasy, as if creased by a bullet

“I don’t know you Try to understand ”

“Oh! Now I know why you’re refusing to accept your affair with me ” She pointed toward a blow-up of Anil, Sujata, and Rupesh on the wall

“Yes, I’m married. But it’s not that.”

“First love never dies. I was your first love, as you always said.”

“My wife and son are missing. I mean they’re not at home, and I’ve no information about them. I’ve to check whether they’re at our neighbors’, friends’, relatives’ places.”

“So, you’re searching for them How long have you been married?”

“Ten years ”

“Now you’re looking for them, after ten long years ”

“What do you mean?”

“All husbands are the same They’ve no time for their wives, kids One fine day they claim that they’ve done a lot for them ”

“What are you saying? I’ve always provided them with all the opulence of life ”

“Is that enough? What about love?”

“Of course, I love them ”

“You’re in love with your job, married to your profession ”

“That’s not true ”

“Ok, then tell me which class is Rupesh in?”

“Class 3 or no, maybe class 4 ”

Nikita smiled and shook her head

“What? You don’t even know what I’ve gone through Reaching the position of Vice-President wasn’t easy ”

“Forget about your greed for a moment Imagine our romance in college ”

Nikita shifted to the big sofa and sat next to Anil

Unhurriedly, she started inching toward him, and he didn’t feel like resisting her. Watching her with admiration, he longed for her soft touch; her dreamy eyes reminded him of Sujata. After marriage, they’d spent innumerable moments of happiness in each other’s company. He was a junior officer at the same pharmaceutical company where he rose six times. He’d never stopped for a moment, never met with“failures” a word that simply didn’t exist in his work life Slowly and steadily, he’d given her all the pleasures of life the upshot of participation in a race where he couldn’t rest, even a short pause could have spoiled everything that he’d created with so much dedication and hard work In such a busy schedule of climbing up the ladder, he’d very little time to halt, contemplate, and devote to his loved ones But somewhere within he knew they were happy

“You’ve been a service provider during all these 10 years A person at the call center who only receives calls and delivers goods Where is the emotion, the affection, the comfort of your presence?”

“So mean of you to say that I’m a busy person; I can’t leave the office and sit at home ”

“You’re a shopping extravaganza A dream that rich people see every day buying more and more items of luxury with money, at the cost of ”

“Just shut up ” Anil got up abruptly, went over to the dining table at the other end of the room, and started slashing several ceramic plates on the floor, one after the other, mouthing abuses, “How dare you call me that? Not in my house. Do you hear that?”

“Yes, it’s your house I know But where are the inhabitants?”

“You ” Anil aimed a hefty kick at the ground Hurt and exhausted, he slouched over a dining chair

“I’m glad that I could arouse some sentiment in you a lifeless ATM machine generating money ”

“I’m not going to hear you anymore ”

“There’s still time, Anil Haven’t you heard about the ‘Snakes and Ladders’ game?I was once as successful as you are now While climbing the ladder, one day I stepped on a snake and went down like nine pins It’s still not late, Anil Let it not go as an unavailing warning!” The fixity of her stare into space made him uncomfortable

“Come to the point! You want money.”

Nikita smiled and motioned him to sit beside her on the sofa. Anil obeyed her for the second time. Nikita gently stroked his jet-black hair. She placed her head on his chest as if to hear his heartbeat. Anil felt the urge to hold her tightly in his arms, but an unknown entity was unwelcome in his life someone who could complicate his present situation even further. Each of his eyelids was heavy with a cloud of sleep, unconsciously and almost spontaneously closed something that would come every day but without any peace or aid of rest, as his mind kept constantly calculating his next move in office, worrying about his ambitions, his aspirations

“Where are they?” Suddenly he recalled a phone call that he’d received in the afternoon during that day It was from his wife She’d informed him that her father was unwell She was taking Rupesh along with her to Deoghar, her parents’ place How could he forget about it?

“Nikita, I remember Sujata has gone to her father’s place ” He announced, opening his eyes

In his state of distraction, he hadn’t noticed that the house was as still as grave He looked around but Nikita wasn’t anywhere His eyes raced to the main door that was locked from inside For a moment, it felt like he’d lost the oars of his boat in the middle of an ocean and the next wave would jump right onto him, bringing him down

A spark of consciousness triggered inside If he tried, he could still catch the last train to Deoghar

His gaze shifted to a “Snakes and Ladders” game board lying on the center table

“There is still time to save myself from stepping on the snake ”Saying aloud, off he went in the darkness of the night, brimming with the spirit of connection, enough to brighten his path forward

AYearFullof Pain

s the New Year bell rang, we geared up to welcome 2024. A fresh year was ahead of me and I was excited to welcome 2024 just like others. With the excitement in me, I was not aware of what 2024 had in store for me. The year started on a good note. The beginning of the year gave me good news which was related to my passion. I love to create happy stories which would bring smiles to my readers' faces My book got published in the first month of the year It was enough reason to make me feel that this year has a lot of good stuff for me

In the next month, I got a huge jolt that was connected to my profession I lost my job due to the introduction of AI in my professional front It was impossible to go through such a tough and unfortunate situation Staying away from my job which I have been doing for the last many years was indeed no less than a shock for me Not having a permanent job is a pain

It was quite tough to surmount the tough time when I got another punch from life I was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy and lumbar spondylosis Nights after nights I had to bear the unbearable pain in my feet At the same time, the pain and stiffness in my lower back were too much to tackle Tears used to roll down my cheeks when I used to think of my being jobless and my health issues

Somehow, I was overcoming this tough time when I met with an accident My knee was hurt due to falling off on the road. Pain in my feet due to neuropathy and the accident pain in my knee was becoming unbearable. My bedside table was full of medicines.

Owing to lumbar spondylosis, my legs started to feel weak. I lost strength in my legs. I used to tremble while walking. Time was when I lost confidence on walking. My weak legs made me feel as if I was about to fall. There were a few nights when I fell off the floor while getting up from my bed.

This pain was not enough for me I guess I lost my close friend this year with whom I shared my good and bad times Losing my closest friend forever was another punch in my face in 2024 I was trying to cope when my father's eye issues came to the surface My father was diagnosed with cataracts and pupil-related issues Had no other option but to opt for surgery

Not being able to walk, jobless life, being alone, my father's eye surgery and whatnot what else has this year in store for me? Why me?

By this year end, I realize that there is something good coming my way. That is why I decided to infuse positive thoughts in me when I am surrounded by negativities. I told myself that I will have to buck up and fight. Crying in my pain is not a solution. No matter how tough times come in my life, I will have to stay positive because happy times are on their way. Hopefully, 2025 will not give me pain Hoping for a ray of sunshine in the coming year

Happy 2025 to my readers!

A A CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS PROMISE PROMISE

deathly silence pervaded the chilling air of Cascade Town, once vibrant now stands solemn as a stoic reminder of the fallacy of permanence. A huge Christmas tree with leaves wearing a dark green hue shone like velvet burdened by the shimmering multicolored balls and toys and gifts and stars hanging from its stooping branches It gleamed in the silvery glow of a mournful moon standing forlorn in the eastern sky The colourless glow reflecting on the lone star atop the Christmas tree fell on the dark lane creating halo The tree, a symbolism of the once happy town still stood erect in the city centre, bold and draped with a lingering hope of a Christmas miracle Its branches frozen with snow, layers after layers as many Christmases floated by The greenish tinge now only perceptible to the scrutinisingly curious eyes but would appear blossomblanced at cursory glance The entire town was ghastly calm unbecoming of an upcoming Christmas, all shops brightly lit and illuminated, the lawns and doors proudly exhibiting fresh mistletoes and fairy lights even the shadows fixed in the walls and in the place of people, of bubbling life bringing Christmas cheer, were 500 statues, now cradled and clad in snow, with unfathomable semblance to actual humans The sorrowful downward glance of the eyes, the hurried placing of the fingers in the face, the subtle wrinkles of the dresses and pants in the sprinting posture, even the last teardrop crystallized in the young maiden’s eye. Only the wind flew silkily through their hairs, which were fluid and auburn without a tangle. A big book stood out among the other sundry gifts placed at the foot of the Christmas Tree. It read “A Prophesy Fulfilled In Time.”Its pages fluttered in the wind yearning to be opened but held fast by an invisible curse. The moon still shone. Its pearly drops like unrestrained tears dotted the narrow lane of the invisible city as if emulating the starstudded sky but still falling short The spirits of the townfolk lingered in the air, never leaving the place, bound by love and loyalty though not bonded by the curse Their songs and hymns made murmurations on the night sky, tinging the north wind with a plaintive touch

A faint footstep was heard, the pages of the Prophesy Book fluttered in frantic anticipation Probably the time has finally arrived It started on a long winter night when the townfolks were heavy in celebratory preparations that a steely smoke from the southern hills covered the town, shocked it in silence ,freezing everything in sight except the firmament and then that Book dropped from the sky which held the solemn promise of the return of the past glory, the return

of the cheer and the defeat of the curse The radio broke, Christmas carols stopped halfway, now the mournful laments flooded the roads on Christmas nights, the seasons never changed, still, the hope lingers Now the pages fluttered as the footsteps grew louder

“Mum, why the snowglobe is making such somber music, it should play a happy note ” chirped a little girl to her mother, the eyebrows wiggling in avid curiosity The shopkeeper beamed brightly at the little girl and said “Because it is different than the others, its time hasn’t come yet perhaps But better late than never, eh young lady?” his beard swinging all the way

The little girl slowly nodded her head and then turned towards her mother “Mum may I please take this snow globe home? It will perfectly fit in our mantelpiece ” A prompt no blurted out of her mouth immediately followed by her direct question to the shopkeeper “Show us some less gloomy Christmas toys, which actually feels like Christmas, not some steely reminder of some lost happy days.”

Little did she notice the wave of emotions which passed through his face at thunderous pace as he moved wistfully to the other toys before muttering silently “It only required a loving touch of life to bring it back to life.” The pages of the book clamped shut, even though the wind howled with great gusto But still, the silvery moon shone and the rare stars sparkled instilling a silent strength of perseverance

The shop closed, while the snowglobe stood silent in the dark corner of the shelf, alone and forgotten but still different and shining, alive with a hope that maybe next year a warm touch of life will finally melt the glass ceiling

In “Bhagmati: Why Hyderabad’s Lost Queen Is The Soul Of The City”, author Moupia Basu uncovers a deeply emotional and poignant tale that intertwines love, history, and the soul of a city The story of Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah, the poet-king, and Bhagmati, a Hindu devadasi, unfolds in 16th-century India against the backdrop of the Golconda Sultanate Their love, born in defiance of societal norms, becomes a force powerful enough to shape the very foundation of Hyderabad Through Basu’s vivid storytelling, we are transported into a world where love transcends boundaries, leading to the birth of a city that would carry the echoes of their bond forever. Moupia Basu’s heartfelt exploration of their love story reveals a city that was not just built with stone and mortar, but with passion and dreams. The bridges, the streets, and the very name of Hyderabad owe their existence to this powerful connection between a king and a woman who was both his muse and his equal Yet, as Basu’s research uncovers, Bhagmati’s presence in the city’s history has been erased, a painful consequence of a world that could not fully embrace their love The book shines a light on the tragic mystery of Bhagmati’s disappearance from the historical record, offering a voice to the woman whose love shaped the destiny of a city yet whose memory was silenced With great tenderness, Basu invites us into the heart of Hyderabad’s history, where the absence of Bhagmati lingers in the air like an unspoken word Through contemporary accounts and oral traditions, she paints a picture of a woman whose legacy lives on despite the erasure of her name In doing so, Basu opens our hearts to the emotional depth of Bhagmati’s story, allowing us to feel her presence in the city's very fabric The ambiguity surrounding her existence only deepens the emotional resonance of her life and love, leaving us to wonder how many other women’s stories have been lost to time. “Bhagmati” is not just a book about the creation of a city; it is a tender tribute to love, loss, and the often forgotten women who shape our world. Moupia Basu’s words will stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page, urging you to reflect on the powerful, sometimes heartbreaking, ways love changes the course of history

It’s a story that pulls at the heartstrings, reminding us that the most profound legacies are often the ones that are never fully acknowledged.

Blood of Hercules by Jasmine Mas

Jasmine Mas's "Blood of Hercules" is a captivating blend of Greek mythology and dark fantasy that follows the tumultuous journey of Alexis Hert, a foster child who discovers her Spartan heritage Set in a post-apocalyptic world dominated by Titans and ruled by powerful immortals, the narrative unfolds as Alexis grapples with her newfound identity and the brutal realities of the Spartan War Academy. The book's premise is intriguing: a shy and scarred girl thrust into a world of elite warriors, where she must confront not only external threats but also her own traumatic past. The story is rich with character development, particularly in its portrayal of Alexis. Reviewers have praised her resilience and humor, which shine through even in the face of overwhelming adversity. Mas effectively utilizes Alexis's internal monologue to convey her struggles and growth, making her a relatable protagonist However, some readers found the writing style polarizing; while many appreciated its humour and wit, others felt it detracted from the overall narrative depth The pacing is brisk, ensuring that readers remain engaged as Alexis navigates her harrowing trials and complex relationships with characters like Achilles, Patro, Augustus, and Kharon The inclusion of Greek mythology adds an exciting dimension to the plot, though it leaves room for critique regarding the consistency of its integration within the story's framework Despite some inconsistencies, the fresh take on familiar mythological themes keeps the story engaging, with a compelling interplay of humor and darker elements For its entertaining narrative and compelling characters "Blood of Hercules" is an entertaining read. While it may not be perfect some aspects could benefit from further development its addictive quality and engaging storyline definitely hooks the readers.

With a mix of wit, action, and romance set against a backdrop of mythological intrigue, Jasmine Mas has crafted a promising start to what could become a beloved series in the fantasy romance genre.

Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend

Originally published over thirty years ago, “Boundaries” by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend has had a significant cultural impact, selling millions of copies and spawning resources for various life areas like relationships, parenting, and work. The book is structured into three

parts: defining boundaries and their guiding laws, applying these principles across life domains, and developing healthier boundaries The authors present boundaries as "personal property lines" that define one’s identity and interactions While the book's intentions are commendable, it elevates boundaries as the key to fulfillment, which some argue overshadows deeper spiritual truths and the gospel's transformative power The book offers practical guidance, particularly for individuals struggling with people-pleasing tendencies or the unsustainable pressure of constant availability The authors draw upon years of counselling experience to illustrate their points, providing relatable examples. Chapter 4 stands out for its valuable advice, such as cautioning parents against overcontrolling or relying on children for emotional support. Additionally, Boundaries acknowledges the importance of biblical wisdom and community, recognising the local church as a helpful resource for navigating relational challenges. These strengths make the book accessible and potentially beneficial for readers seeking tools to address interpersonal struggles. Despite its merits, the book's application of boundaries as a universal framework becomes problematic, especially when extended to theological contexts The authors propose that God respects human boundaries, citing examples like the prodigal son and the rich young ruler However, this interpretation often misses the deeper spiritual implications of such stories Critics argue that the concept of boundaries, while useful in human relationships, cannot fully encompass the complexities of divine interaction or Scripture's broader teachings The book risks oversimplifying nuanced spiritual and relational dynamics by framing boundaries as a central lens for interpreting relationships and Scripture While Boundaries provides helpful tools for managing relationships and setting limits, its overemphasis on the concept detracts from the centrality of wise, discerning love rooted in Scripture. The authors’ “10 Laws of Boundaries” offer practical advice but fall short of addressing the deeper, individualized discernment required for navigating broken relationships. True relational healing often requires divine intervention and an approach that prioritizes love and communion with God over rigid frameworks.

For readers seeking a biblically grounded approach to relationships, the book may serve as a starting point but lacks the depth to be a comprehensive guide.

Breakthrough by William Pao

In "Breakthrough: The Quest for LifeChanging Medicines", William Pao shares fascinating stories about how some of the most important medicines were discovered. Drawing from his experience as a doctor and pharmaceutical expert, Pao takes readers behind the scenes to

show the hard work, creativity, and a bit of luck that go into developing treatments for diseases like cancer, sickle cell anaemia, AIDS, and COVID-19 Instead of focusing on his personal story or defending the pharmaceutical industry, Pao shines a light on the people and ideas driving medical breakthroughs. The book starts by explaining basic concepts like DNA and mRNA in simple terms, making it easy to follow even if you’re not a scientist. Each chapter then tells the story of how a particular medicine was created, from accidental discoveries like paracetamol to clever problem-solving, like turning a Coke machine into a research tool These examples show how persistence and imagination are key to finding new treatments One of the most exciting parts is the story of how scientists quickly developed COVID-19 antivirals Even while working from home during the pandemic, researchers collaborated online to refine compounds and create life-saving drugs in record time Pao also highlights the personal motivations of scientists, like a doctor inspired by a patient’s struggle or a researcher driven by a childhood tragedy, which add a heartfelt touch to the scientific achievements This section of the book is likely to remind Indian readers of the crucial role India played in producing the first COVID-19 vaccine Finally, books like "Breakthrough" celebrate the dedication of scientists who never give up, even when progress is slow or uncertain. Their work has saved countless lives, and this book helps us appreciate the effort behind the medicines we often take for granted.

It’s an inspiring and easy-to-read look at how curiosity and determination can change the world.

Sharyl Attkisson’s "Follow the Science: How Big Pharma Misleads, Obscures, and Prevails" delves into the controversial intersection of corporate interests, government policies, and public health, exposing how the pharmaceutical industry’s pursuit of profit often eclipses patient welfare. With

her signature investigative rigour, Attkisson provides a compelling critique of a flawed system that prioritizes economic gains over transparency and medical ethics Chronicling incidents where public trust was eroded, she argues for scepticism and accountability in understanding the dynamics of modern healthcare One of the book's main focus is the ethical lapses in public health initiatives and medical research. Attkisson recounts examples such as the smallpox vaccination program following 9/11, where adverse reactions highlighted gaps in oversight and informed consent. She also scrutinizes clinical trials, like the 'Support Baby Oxygen Study', which misled parents about potential risks to their infants. These cases underscore a recurring pattern of inadequate regulatory scrutiny and compromised ethical standards, often shielded by political or economic pressures The book's critique extends to the approval of controversial drugs like Aduhelm, an Alzheimer's treatment that raised concerns about conflicts of interest between the FDA and pharmaceutical companies She argues that economic motivations often overshadow scientific merit, citing COVID-19 vaccines as a case where early promises of efficacy contradicted realworld outcomes The book highlights the challenges faced by those seeking accountability, such as limited legal recourse for vaccine-related injuries and inconsistent messaging from health authorities that have eroded public trust In conclusion, "Follow the Science" is a thoughtprovoking exploration of the pharmaceutical industry’s pervasive influence on public health. Through detailed analysis and case studies, Attkisson advocates for greater transparency, ethical rigor, and public vigilance.

This book is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the intricate and often troubling relationship between science, policy, and profit, and it serves as a call to action for systemic reform in healthcare.

Gods Guns & Missionaries by Manu S. Pillai Manu S Pillai’s recent book, "Gods Guns & Missionaries: The Making Of The Modern Hindu Identity" takes readers on a fascinating journey through the history of Hinduism’s transformation during colonial rule The book explores how Hinduism, known for its flexibility and diversity, was reshaped under the

influence of European missionaries and British imperialism. With a rich cast of characters, including poets, philosophers, reformers, and revolutionaries, Pillai examines the social and political forces that helped shape modern Hindu identity The book opens with the intriguing account of Jaipur maharajah’s 1902 journey to England, complete with rituals and symbols of orthodoxy, setting the tone for a richly detailed exploration of India’s evolving religious and cultural identity The book highlights the challenges Hinduism faced when early missionaries, such as Portuguese Jesuits, dismissed it as a superstitious and chaotic faith Over time, Orientalists like William Jones sought to celebrate its philosophical depth, but even they reduced Hinduism to simplified ideas Reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Dayananda Saraswati responded by reimagining Hinduism to defend it against colonial critiques They often focused on texts like the Upanishads, portraying them as the “true” essence of Hinduism, while downplaying the rich myths and rituals found in the Puranas. Author Pillai shows how colonialism forced Hindu thinkers to adapt and redefine their traditions. While this helped Hinduism survive in a changing world, it also led to a narrowing of its vast, vibrant character. The flexibility that once allowed Hinduism to absorb diverse practices was replaced by a more rigid structure, shaped by Western ideas of religion Yet, he doesn’t reduce this process to a negative outcome Instead, he presents it as a story of resilience and reinvention, showing how Hinduism navigated external pressures to emerge with new strength The book focuses on India’s cultural and religious expressions, capturing the fluid and shifting nature of beliefs with exceptional clarity His methodical approach, sensitivity to nuance, and deep understanding of semiotics allow him to analyze Indian ideas and traditions with remarkable precision is interesting Covering a wide span of history from Akbar’s interactions with Jesuits to Savarkar’s death the book showcases great stories that combine meticulous research with insightful details

To add this, photographs add beauty to the book."Gods Guns & Missionaries" is a thought-provoking and accessible read, offering a fresh perspective on a complex and evolving tradition.

leaves her seemingly perfect family life to start anew in the tranquil yet mysterious village of Abbeydooley. Ahern sets the stage for a raw emotional journey, punctuated by themes of grief, self-discovery, and the redemptive power of nature The central character - Enya’s new life is not an escape from her past but a confrontation with it The rag tree in Abbeydooley, steeped in Irish folklore, becomes a symbol of her inner turmoil and eventual transformation Initially, her anger toward the tree mirrors her resistance to addressing her grief and fears Yet, as she embraces the village’s unique customs and stories, she begins to untangle the web of her suppressed emotions, including the guilt surrounding her mother’s death and her own mortality Ahern’s integration of Irish mythology adds a layer of depth, blending the real and the mystical into Enya’s journey of self-reckoning As always, author Cecelia Ahern’s characters shine with authenticity, particularly Enya, whose volatility and vulnerability make her both relatable and compelling. Her strained relationships, especially with her son Finn, and her initial struggles in the tight-knit village create a narrative rich in tension and growth. Yu Yoyo’s debut novel, "Invisible Kitties", translated from Chinese by Jeremy Tiang, offers a magical and humorous exploration of the bond between humans and cats. Centered on a young couple and their mischievous feline companion, the story unfolds through 60 short chapters interspersed with simple illustrations The narrative blends ordinary

life with surreal flights of fancy, making it a unique celebration of the mysterious and endearing nature of cats. The novel captures the quirks and peculiarities of feline behaviour through a poetic lens, reflecting Yu Yoyo’s background as a poet The cats in the story transcend the boundaries of reality, defying physics and logic they shape-shift, dissolve, and even materialize from clouds or fur balls While whimsical and imaginative, these elements often teeter on the edge of the fantastical, creating a narrative that feels both enchanting and slightly absurd Author Yu’s observations on cats are vivid and often relatable, from their sun-soaking habits to the surreal notion of them possessing miniature moons on their claws However, the novel’s whimsical metaphors and surreal imagery may not resonate with everyone The playful exploration of feline life, though charming, occasionally ventures into territory that might feel overly twee or niche, particularly for readers who are not ardent cat enthusiasts. Despite its eccentricities, "Invisible Kitties" is a quick, light read with moments of brilliance that cat lovers will cherish. While it may not fully succeed as literary fiction, it offers a delightful dip into a world where imagination runs wild.

Perfect for fans of whimsical storytelling, it’s an inventive homage to the enigmatic charm of felines that encourages readers to see their pets in a new light.

Living Space and Other Stories by

Isaac Asimov's short stories, renowned for their sharp intelligence and understated wit, are a joy to revisit in the recently re-released "Living Space and Other Stories". These tales capture the essence of Asimov’s middle years of writing when he was at the peak of his short story craft before his novels

and science-fact articles dominated his time. The collection showcases Asimov’s signature style direct, engaging, and often surprisingly humorous, with little need for literary embellishments. For fans of classic science fiction, this is a delightful opportunity to explore the imaginative brilliance of one of the genre's most celebrated authors. This anthology of 25 stories including two poems highlights Asimov’s incredible range Stories like 'The Dead Past' and 'The Dying Night' delve into deeper, thought-provoking themes, while lighter tales such as 'The Message' rely on clever wordplay and humor Asimov’s fascination with computers and their role in shaping the future is particularly evident, with the legendary 'The Last Question' (often cited as Asimov’s favorite) showcasing his ability to envision a future where technology is both a tool and a challenge for humanity Additionally, the anthology sprinkles in playful explorations of religious themes, as seen in 'The Last Trump', adding a layer of philosophical curiosity to the mix While many of the stories reflect the technological and societal anxieties of the 1950s flying saucers, atomic power, and the looming threat of nuclear war they also resonate with contemporary readers in surprising ways. Asimov’s portrayal of massive, world-controlling computers like Multivac feels eerily prescient in today’s techdriven world. Themes of individuality, the balance of power, and the potential pitfalls of unchecked technological advancement make these stories as relevant today as they were decades ago. However, not all tales age gracefully; but some feel particularly dated, with their humor failing to land in a modern context. "Living Space" serves as a testament to Asimov's mastery of the short story form The brevity of many pieces might feel abrupt, but their punchy, idea-driven narratives reflect the constraints and creativity of mid-century magazine publishing While the lack of Asimov's laterdeveloped introductions and postscripts is noticeable, this collection remains an excellent gateway for readers new to his shorter works Packed with wit, imagination, and enduring themes, this anthology is a worthy addition to any science fiction enthusiast’s library

The re-release is a timely reminder of why Asimov’s writing continues to captivate readers across generations.

Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi's "Loss" is a poignant exploration of grief, articulated through a collection of essays that delve into the author's personal experiences with the deaths of his mother, father, and beloved pet dog, Bruschetta. The book opens with an arresting statement that evokes the raw pain

of loss, immediately drawing readers into a shared understanding of bereavement Shanghvi’s writing is both elegant and incisive, employing metaphors that resonate deeply, such as comparing the contemplation of death to “plunging your hand into a pond,” where one encounters shapes that defy naming. This vivid imagery sets the tone for a reflective journey through sorrow and healing. The first essay focuses on the author's father, Mr. Dhanvant, whose battle with cancer and subsequent loneliness are recounted with tenderness and honesty. Shanghvi recalls intimate moments from their shared life, such as his father's unwavering support during routine dental visits and school drop-offs These memories serve not only to honor his father’s legacy but also to illustrate the profound impact of their relationship This sentiment underscores the duality of loss wherein two deaths occur: the physical departure and the transformation of those left behind In the second essay, Shanghvi reflects on his relationship with Bruschetta, emphasizing how pets can penetrate our loneliness and offer companionship in our darkest moments The narrative captures the joy and pain intertwined in their bond, culminating in vivid recollections of Bruschetta’s presence and absence The author articulates a universal truth about grief: it is not merely a record of what has been lost but rather an acknowledgment of who has been loved The final essay is dedicated to his mother, Padmini, whose strength and resilience shine through even amidst her suffering. Shanghvi paints a portrait of a woman who maintained her spirit despite the challenges posed by her illness. He recounts her laughter that momentarily drowned out sorrow and her creative expressions through poetry and letters. This section resonates profoundly as it poses existential questions about life and death while celebrating the enduring bond between mother and son The author’s reflections on his mother’s wisdom reveal insights that transcend personal grief, offering readers solace in their own experiences with loss "Loss" is not just a memoir; it is an invitation to reflect on the nature of love, memory, and the indelible marks left by those we cherish

Through his lyrical prose and evocative photographs interspersed throughout the essays, Shanghvi crafts a mirage of words that is both personal and universal.

Neil deGrasse Tyson’s " Merlin's Tour of the Universe, Revised and Updated for the Twenty-First Century: A Traveler's Guide to Blue Moons and Black Holes, Mars, Stars, and Everything Far " is not your typical science book it’s a lively conversation between the cosmos-curious and a fictional extraterrestrial, Merlin, from the Andromeda

Bhasin’s "Negotiating India’s Landmark Agreements" is a meticulous exploration of five transformative agreements that have shaped India’s foreign policy since its independence The book examines the India-China Agreement on Tibet (1954), the Indo-Soviet Treaty of Peace, Friendship, and Cooperation (1971), the Simla Agreement

(1972), the India-Sri Lanka Accord (1987), and the India-U.S. Civil Nuclear Energy Agreement (2008). On Beauty by Prathyush Parasuraman

Prathyush Parasuraman's "On Beauty: The Cinema of Sanjay Leela Bhansali" offers a thoughtful look into the aesthetic ideas that shape Bhansali's films Sanjay Leela Bhansali is renowned for his larger-than-life films, characterized by their opulence and grandeur. His cinematic creations stand out in Indian cinema history, not just for their

storytelling but for their visually stunning sets that transport audiences into a world of rich aesthetics. The book defends and analyzes his filmmaking style, showing that beauty is not just decoration but a core part of his storytelling. Parasuraman explains how Bhansali’s movies like 'Devdas', 'Padmaavat', and 'Gangubai Kathiawad' combine deep emotions with stunning visuals, using beauty as a key storytelling tool This approach challenges common criticisms that focus only on the lavish sets and costumes, highlighting instead how beauty plays a vital role in bringing his stories to life Throughout the book, Parasuraman delves into the intricate relationship between beauty and violence in Bhansali's films He highlights how scenes of emotional and physical turmoil coexist with stunning visuals, creating a unique aesthetic that invites viewers to grapple with complex themes For instance, in the chapter titled "Violence in Beauty, Violence as Beauty in Ram-Leela," he examines how Bhansali uses violence not as a glorified spectacle but as a poignant narrative device that enhances the beauty of his characters' struggles This duality enriches the viewer's experience, prompting deeper emotional engagement rather than mere visual admiration. While the book is rich in analysis, it occasionally lacks direct insights from Bhansali or his close collaborators, which could have further deepened its exploration of his artistic vision. The absence of visual aids is also notable; given that each paragraph alludes to specific frames from Bhansali's films, readers unfamiliar with his work may find it challenging to fully appreciate the arguments presented. Nonetheless, Parasuraman’s writing is imbued with humour and flair, making complex ideas accessible and engaging His vivid descriptions evoke the grandeur of Bhansali's cinematic world, allowing readers to feel the vibrancy and emotional weight of each film In conclusion, "On Beauty" stands as a significant contribution to film criticism, particularly within the context of Indian cinema It not only celebrates Sanjay Leela Bhansali's unique aesthetic but also encourages a re-evaluation of how beauty is perceived in film narratives

This book is a must-read for anyone interested in film studies or those who wish to appreciate the profound artistry behind Bhansali's celebrated works

One and Three Quarters by

Shrikant Bojewar's "One and Three Quarters" is an immersive novella that expertly blends social satire with poignant storytelling At its heart is Langdya, a young boy struggling with academics in a quaint Maharashtrian village. The simplicity of his predicament failing Class VII becomes

the foundation for a rich narrative exploring the complexities of rural life, rife with eccentric characters and humorous situations. Langdya's journey from forging mark sheets to navigating the labyrinth of human behavior unfolds with wit and sharp commentary. The novella is populated with vibrant characters who bring the village to life. From the ever-curious Gengane, the schoolteacher, to the peculiar Ajabrao who sings hymns from his rooftop after a drink, the story is teeming with colourful personas Langdya’s accidental rise as a "fixer" starts with a stroke of fortune and evolves into a knack for leveraging secrets Adding a touch of whimsy is Latthya, a tomcat with whom Langdya shares an uncanny connection, allowing him insights into both the human and feline worlds This interplay between the cats’ nocturnal councils and the human drama enriches the narrative, weaving a fascinating tapestry of perspectives

The book's minimalist storytelling, characterized by sharp, unadorned prose, amplifies the satirical undertones of the contents His portrayal of a society grappling with flawed educational systems, political manipulations, and moral ambiguities is biting yet understated The transition from village life to the political chaos of Mumbai underscores Langdya's growth, while the depiction of journalism and political punditry offers a scathing critique of societal norms. Translator Vikrant Pande deserves applause for maintaining the essence and humor of the original Marathi text, ensuring the novella resonates deeply with readers in English. Despite its many strengths, the story occasionally stumbles when introducing surreal elements or abstract mythologies, which can feel excessive However, the charm of its satire and the engaging interplay between humans and cats outweigh these minor missteps

"One and Three Quarters" is a delightful read that combines humor, critique, and whimsy, leaving readers with a keen appreciation for its unique portrayal of voice and memorable characters.

Patriot by Alexei Navalny

The posthumously published memoir of Alexei Navalny titled "Patriot", published by The Bodley Head, offers a compelling and multifaceted account of the Russian opposition leader's life and relentless struggle against corruption and authoritarianism Beginning with his nearfatal poisoning in 2020 and culminating in

his tragic death in a Siberian penal colony in 2024, Navalny's narrative weaves personal anecdotes with sharp political insights. Through his humor and unflinching resolve, he paints a vivid portrait of his life’s mission: to expose the Kremlin's misdeeds and inspire hope for a democratic Russia. The story is one of strength in the face of relentless persecution. His imprisonment following his return to Russia in 2021 marked the beginning of a brutal campaign to silence him Despite the harsh conditions, including psychological torment and solitary confinement, Navalny’s wit and resolve remained intact His ability to juxtapose the grim realities of prison life with Putin’s opulent existence underscores the sharp irony and determination that defined his activism The memoir not only chronicles these challenges but also reveals his profound selfawareness and connection to a generation yearning for change Navalny’s political awakening was deeply influenced by the Soviet legacy and his exposure to its contradictions during his youth His early distrust of authority, fueled by events such as the Chernobyl disaster, later became the bedrock of his anti-corruption crusade The memoir traces his ideological evolution, from grappling with Soviet conservatism to embracing progressive ideals, including support for LGBTQ+ rights. His investigative work and viral videos not only exposed systemic corruption but also connected him with an internet-savvy audience, making him a symbol of hope for a freer Russia.

In "Patriot", Navalny envisions a future Russia defined by free elections, an independent judiciary, and an end to war While his call for reform resonates deeply, the current geopolitical climate, including rising support for Putin, adds complexity to his vision Despite these challenges, Navalny’s memoir transcends his personal story to become a testament to resilience and the fight for truth

His unyielding courage and his blueprint for a better Russia leave an enduring legacy, inspiring those who continue the battle against oppression.

In "Seven Deadly Sins: The Biology of Being Human", Dr Guy Leschziner, a prominent neurologist, explores the intricate relationship between human behavior and the so-called seven deadly sins: gluttony, greed, sloth, pride, envy, lust, and anger

This engaging work challenges traditional

moral perspectives by examining these vices not merely as ethical failings but as complex behaviors deeply rooted in our biology and psychology. Leschziner argues that these traits may be evolutionary adaptations that serve critical functions for survival and social cohesion, prompting readers to reconsider the nature of sin itself The book is structured around each of the seven sins, allowing Leschziner to delve into the neurological and psychological underpinnings of each behavior He employs a wealth of real-life case studies from his clinical practice to illustrate how various medical conditions can lead to actions typically deemed sinful For instance, he discusses patients who have experienced brain injuries that alter their personalities or behaviors in profound ways, suggesting that what society labels as immorality may often be a manifestation of underlying neurological issues rather than mere moral failings This approach not only humanizes those affected but also fosters a deeper understanding of the complexities of human behavior. Leschziner's writing is both accessible and thought-provoking, making complex scientific concepts understandable to a general audience. His empathetic portrayal of patients invites readers to engage with the material on an emotional level, prompting reflection on the nature of free will and personal responsibility. The author raises challenging questions about accountability: If certain behaviours are biologically driven, where do we draw the line between moral culpability and neurological determinism? This exploration is particularly relevant in contemporary discussions surrounding mental health and criminal justice Overall, "Seven Deadly Sins" is a compelling contribution to both neuroscience and moral philosophy Leschziner's ability to intertwine scientific inquiry with human stories creates a narrative that is as enlightening as it is engaging By reframing our understanding of these "sins," he encourages readers to adopt a more compassionate view of human behavior one that acknowledges the intricate interplay between biology, psychology, and societal norms

This book is not just an exploration of sin; it is an invitation to rethink what it means to be human in all our flawed complexity.

Initially, Hanif Kureishi’s dispatches focus on his immediate surroundings hospital routines, medical procedures, and the people he encountered. As his reflections deepen, his tone becomes more introspective, addressing universal themes of dependence, dignity, and the human spirit's capacity for adaptation. The prose flows seamlessly, and its brevity enhances its impact, inviting readers to revisit key passages.

"The Black Orb", written by Korean author Ewhan Kim and translated by Sean Lin Halbert, is a dystopian tale that begins with a chilling premise: a mysterious black sphere appears in downtown Seoul, consuming people and spreading terror The story follows Jeong-su, a drifting

thirtysomething, as he embarks on a perilous journey across South Korea to reunite with his parents amidst the chaos With the orb’s relentless destruction symbolizing despair and hopelessness, the novel unfolds as both an apocalyptic thriller and a deeply introspective allegory. Author Kim’s storytelling is sharp and haunting, drawing readers into a vividly imagined world unraveling under the orb’s growing menace. The slow, inexorable spread of the spheres mirrors the pervasive sense of doom in modern society, where human connection is fragile, and paranoia often reigns. The novel’s dry humor and absurdity add an unexpected layer, balancing the grimness of its themes However, the story takes uncomfortable narrative turns at times, which may not resonate with all readers The protagonist, Jeong-su, is a deeply flawed character, often selfish and unlikeable His struggles and choices compel readers to reflect on their responses to crises Would we act selflessly, or would survival instinct push us toward selfishness? While Jeongsu’s moral ambiguity adds complexity to the narrative, it also creates a barrier to fully connecting with his journey This tension between empathy and revulsion is a hallmark of Kim’s exploration of human nature Though the novel’s pacing and vivid world-building make it hard to put down, the story’s conclusion may leave some readers unsatisfied Its allegorical nature, paired with abrupt tonal shifts, can feel disjointed.

Still, "The Black Orb" is a thought-provoking and darkly compelling read, offering an unsettling reflection on the fragility of civilization and the human psyche in the face of calamity.

The End of the Chinese Century?

Bertil Lintner’s " The End of the Chinese Century? How Xi Jinping Lost the Belt and Road Initiative" offers an incisive exploration of China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Launched in 2013 under Xi Jinping’s leadership, the BRI was envisioned as a modern "New Silk Route,"

connecting continents via the "Silk Road Economic Belt" and the "Maritime Silk Road " Its grand vision aimed not only to restore China’s glory as a global trading powerhouse but also to position it as the preeminent world leader, surpassing the United States. Lintner critically examines these aspirations, grounding his analysis in historical context and geopolitical realities. The book delves into the challenges faced by the BRI, highlighting instances where it has fallen short of its goals. Countries like Sri Lanka and Laos, burdened by Chinese debt, illustrate the pitfalls of this ambitious endeavour. Others, such as Thailand and several Central Asian republics, have grown wary of Chinese investments, while nations like Pakistan have seen outright opposition Lintner underscores these tensions, revealing how resistance across Asia and the Pacific has stalled China’s vision of regional dominance Author Bertil Lintner’s writing is both detailed and engaging, enriched by his deep knowledge of the region's history and geopolitics The book provides a broad geographic sweep, with meticulous attention to China's strategic calculations regarding natural resources, transportation networks, and geopolitical leverage Despite its extensive focus on smaller island nations in the final chapters, the depth of analysis validates their inclusion, underscoring their significance in China's global strategy Lintner's use of maps and historical parallels enhances the reader's understanding, making the book a compelling read for those interested in China's global ambitions. Through its seven well-structured chapters, "The End of the Chinese Century?" serves as a crucial resource for understanding the complexities of the BRI and its broader implications. Author Anurag Tripathi, with his investment banking and storytelling background, brings a unique perspective to the narrative In the story, he draws from his keen observation of people and life experiences, creating a narrative that is both thrilling and thought-provoking The novel delves deep into the human psyche, using the casino as a metaphor for life's unpredictability and the moral choices we face in the pursuit of success. It's simple: There aren't "bad" or "good" people just people. One of the book's interesting points is its exploration of complex characters, each with their motivations and flaws. Meet Jayesh Shah, the ultimate highroller who's built his empire on the roll of a dice! With power and money at his fingertips, every move he makes is a nailbiter. Just as he's about to unveil his new casino, life throws him a curveball, shaking up both his personal and business worlds Readers buckle up for a wild ride through Jayesh's adrenaline-pumping adventures, narrated with a splash of sass and a whole lot of flair! This isn't just a tale of gambling; it's a reflection on ambition, greed, and the fine line between right and wrong The characters, from the morally complex protagonist to the power-driven antagonists, make choices that many readers can relate to, adding depth and relatability to the story Despite its engaging plot and well-developed characters, the pacing of the novel does falter slightly in the middle, which may test some readers' patience However, the payoff is worth the wait as Tripathi expertly builds tension and suspense, particularly in heart-stopping moments where a character's fate hinges on a single roll of the dice These scenes perfectly encapsulate the high stakes that define the book and stay with the reader long after finishing.

As the author succinctly puts it, "In the casino of life, every choice is a gamble, and the stakes are always high "The Goa Gambit" is a thrilling and entertaining read, perfect for fans of crime thrillers and stories about the dark side of ambition.

The Grudges of Gajanan Godbole by Salil Desai

Salil Desai’s "The Grudges of Gajanan Godbole" introduces readers to the most unexpected anti-hero in recent thriller fiction

Gajanan Godbole, a middle-class Punekar with a twisted sense of justice and a freshly discovered homicidal streak After surviving both an overbearing wife and a

near-fatal encounter with COVID, Gajanan finds himself reborn, shedding his meek persona and embracing his newfound freedom But with freedom comes grudges, and Gajanan has a list and it’s not your typical grocery list His motto? "Apologize or die " Yes, you read that right In classic author Salil Desai's fashion, the story is wickedly humorous, disturbingly relatable, and deeply layered Gajanan’s journey from a docile husband to a methodical avenger is both fascinating and terrifying. His targets are people who wronged him in the past, and the satisfaction he derives from doling out punishment makes readers both cheer and cringe. The novel’s dark humor, particularly Gajanan’s one-liners like his quip about the re-marriage of his daughter will have readers laughing out loud, even as they feel unsettled by his escalating actions. The plot is intricately woven, with Desai’s trademark wit and skillful storytelling shining through. Gajanan’s backstory is crafted with precision, helping us understand his motivations while questioning his ethics From local Pune settings that feel alive on the page to a parade of colourful supporting characters, the novel immerses readers in a world that feels real yet absurdly exaggerated As Gajanan’s list dwindles, the tension builds, and we’re left wondering whether we’re rooting for justice or complicit in his madness The story is divided into 42 chapters with unique titles for each The comfortable font size and page setup make the reading more interesting Desai masterfully balances humor and horror, creating a protagonist who is simultaneously monstrous and relatable With its sharp writing, wild twists, and the moral ambiguity of its central character, "The Grudges of Gajanan Godbole" is a darkly comedic thrill ride that keeps you hooked. Revenge has never been this entertaining or unsettling.

Author Salil Desai proves once again why he’s a master of crafting unique, unforgettable tales.

The Martian Way and Other Stories by

Isaac Asimov's "The Martian Way and Other Stories" is a compelling exploration of human ingenuity and resilience set against the backdrop of a Martian colony facing a dire water crisis Published in 1955, this novella encapsulates the essence of hard science fiction,

showcasing Asimov's ability to weave intricate scientific concepts with engaging storytelling. The plot revolves around the Martians, who have become increasingly dependent on Earth for water, facing a boycott that threatens their survival. Asimov deftly illustrates the desperation of the colonists, who must devise a bold plan to secure their water supply, leading them to undertake a perilous journey to Saturn to mine ice. One of the novella's strengths lies in its rich character development. Asimov introduces a diverse cast, including Ted Long, a determined scavenger whose innovative thinking propels the narrative forward The characters are not merely vessels for the plot; they embody the spirit of adaptation and survival that defines the Martian society The interactions among characters highlight their evolving identities as Martians rather than mere Earth colonists, reflecting a deeper commentary on cultural transformation and independence from Earth Dora Swenson, another notable character, adds complexity to the narrative with her strong personality, contributing to the story's emotional depth Asimov's worldbuilding is equally impressive, painting a vivid picture of life on Mars The society he creates feels authentic and multifaceted, with its customs and challenges The depiction of Mars as a harsh yet beautiful environment serves as a backdrop for the characters' struggles and triumphs. This setting not only enhances the narrative but also acts as a catalyst for exploring themes of isolation and community resilience in the face of adversity. The scientific plausibility of using water as a propellant for spacecraft adds an intriguing layer to the story, showcasing Asimov's knack for blending science with speculative fiction. Overall, "The Martian Way" stands out as one of Asimov's finest works from his prolific career in the 1950s It combines an engaging plot with welldrawn characters and a richly imagined setting, all while addressing relevant social issues such as dependency and self-sufficiency Despite minor critiques regarding pacing and character dynamics, the novella remains an essential read for fans of science fiction and those interested in Asimov's visionary approach to storytelling

The themes explored resonate even today, making it a timeless piece that continues to inspire discussions about humanity's future in space exploration.

The Mistletoe Mystery by Nita Prose

"The Mistletoe Mystery," by the #1 New York Times bestselling author Nita Prose brings readers a heartwarming holiday novella featuring Molly the Maid This novella sees Molly Gray, who cherishes Christmas traditions passed down by her late Gran, navigating the festive season with her beloved boyfriend, Juan Manuel

Determined to create the most joyful Christmas for Molly, Juan's efforts lead to delightful surprises, rekindling the magic of the holidays. As the Regency Grand Hotel's Secret Santa gift exchange unfolds, Molly's instincts are piqued, leading her to question who she can trust. The narrative captures Molly's journey as she dives into a deeply personal mystery, driven by her fear of repeating past mistakes in love This tale, enriched with Molly's endearing quirks and sincere emotions, highlights the true spirit of the season love and connection The novella's 124 pages are filled with the essence of Christmas, from the sights and sounds to the warmth of shared traditions Fans of the series will appreciate the continuity and depth added to Molly's character The story seamlessly transitions into the upcoming third book, "The Maid's Secret," expected in April 2025, promising more adventures for Molly The best part of this novella is its strong character development Molly is still charming and loveable, even though she struggles with understanding and talking to people However, some of her personality traits seem exaggerated to create unnecessary drama, which can be frustrating. On a positive note, Molly's boyfriend Juan Manuel gets his moment to shine, and their relationship is adorable. It's disappointing that the main conflict seems artificially created, especially since Juan should understand Molly's difficulty with social cues. "The Mistletoe Mystery" beautifully captures the cozy, festive atmosphere of the holiday season and incorporates familiar themes from romantic holiday movies, making its predictable plot perfect for a heartwarming Christmas story about love and togetherness

Overall, it is a charming addition to the Molly the Maid series, ideal for anyone seeking a cozy, festive read that resonates with the joy and challenges of the season.

The Science of Attraction by Patrick King

Patrick King's "The Science of Attraction" is an engaging study of the complexities of human relationships, combining behavioural and evolutionary psychology to provide insights into flirting, dating, and maintaining romantic relationships. The book is designed to function as both a guide and a

field manual, making it suitable for readers with little expertise in psychology. King expertly explains complex subjects like attachment theory and love languages, as well as more delicate issues like the dynamics of arranged marriages and the psychology of adultery This combination of fundamental knowledge and practical advice makes the book an invaluable resource for anybody who wants to improve their understanding of attraction and relationships Patrick King's use of peer-reviewed research to back up his assertions is one of his work's most notable aspects His observations and suggestions, which are frequently based on scientific research rather than anecdotal evidence, gain credibility as a result He addresses, for example, how societal perceptions of marriage might affect the success of a relationship, especially when it comes to planned unions Intriguing data that contradicts popular beliefs about romantic compatibility is presented in the chapter on love scales, emphasizing that similar couples typically have greater success than opposites. These revelations inspire readers to examine the psychological concepts at work and reflect on their relationship habits. Despite its strengths, some critiques arise regarding the book's focus and examples. The author's advice appears to be geared primarily toward men pursuing women, perhaps limiting its usefulness to a larger readership is ought to criticism Additionally, while King presents engaging anecdotes and scenarios to illustrate his points, some examples like the notion that poor social etiquette can be perceived as attractive may not resonate universally This raises questions about the generalizability of his conclusions and suggests that readers should approach certain interpretations with a critical mindset Overall, "The Science of Attraction" is an insightful read that successfully marries scientific research with practical dating advice It empowers readers to understand the instinctual triggers of attraction while providing actionable steps to improve their dating lives

Whether single or in a relationship, readers can benefit from King's exploration of human connection, making this book a worthwhile addition to anyone's library on personal development and relationships.

The Sentence by Gautam Bhatia Gautam Bhatia’s "The Sentence" takes readers into a dystopian world grappling with the aftermath of a class war Set in Peruma City, the story follows Nila M , a Guardian-in-training, tasked with upholding peace between the capitalist Council and the anarchist Commune On the centennial of the assassination that sparked a

revolution, Nila is approached to defend Jagat R., the man executed for the crime. His innocence, if proven, threatens to unravel the very foundation of the Commune and its ideals Author Bhatia crafts a strong story that intertwines legal ethics, political tension, and societal reflection This book examines the delicate balance between justice and ideology Nila’s struggle to remain impartial while confronting her Commune roots creates a palpable tension Her motto, “Let justice be done, though the world burns,” underscores the moral dilemmas she faces as her pursuit of truth clashes with the potential collapse of a fragile peace Through the character of Nila, the novel probes questions of morality, memory, and the cost of collective forgetting, offering readers a thought-provoking lens on how societies rebuild after conflict Author Gautam Bhatia’s world-building is detailed and immersive, vividly portraying the Commune’s radical transparency and decentralized governance His exploration of a reversible death sentence introduces fascinating ethical questions: Is it more humane than capital punishment? What happens to the wrongfully condemned upon their revival? These philosophical underpinnings are woven seamlessly into the narrative, balancing thrilling courtroom drama with introspective depth. The integration of Indian legal references and historical allusions further enriches the story, grounding its futuristic premise in contemporary issues The novel’s greatest strength lies in its ability to make readers question their relationship with law and justice Bhatia’s straightforward yet engaging prose transforms complex legal and ethical debates into accessible, gripping storytelling "The Sentence" is more than a dystopian thriller; it is a powerful meditation on identity, power, and the evolving role of justice in shaping our lives

A must-read for those intrigued by the intersections of law, ethics, and societal change.

INTERVIEW Ashdin Doctor

Author: Small Actions, Big Results

In this insightful conversation with Ashdin Doctor, author of Small Actions, Big Results, we explore the transformative power of habits and mindfulness From practical strategies for weaving mindfulness into the busiest of schedules to the philosophy of steady, small actions driving profound changes, Ashdin shares how anyone can create lasting transformation Drawing from personal experiences, actionable exercises, and his journey as a Habit Coach™, he offers invaluable insights into empowering individuals to build meaningful, sustainable habits and take charge of their lives

In "Small Actions, Big Results", you emphasize mindfulness as a key habit for managing stress. Mindfulness is often perceived as a practice requiring significant time and focus, which can be difficult for individuals leading busy lives How can they incorporate mindfulness into their daily routines, particularly those with demanding schedules?

Mindfulness is not a habit that requires a lot of time to practice. In fact, you can practice mindfulness during the moments of the day that are often wasted. The commute to work is a great time to practice mindfulness. If you are driving you can practice it while at the signal. Take a deep breath in a release it slowly. Bring your mind back into the present moment. While you are sitting and waiting for that signal to turn green, normally a task that creates a lot of angst and impatience. You can practice mindfulness and be calm on your entire journey to work You will be surprised, that the person cutting your lane, no longer makes you upset

Many people tend to prioritize dramatic, shortterm changes. Your book advocates for the power of small, consistent actions over more intense efforts. Could you reflect on a time when adopting a philosophy of small, steady actions made a tangible difference for you, whether in your habits, career, or mindset? How did this shift in approach lead to measurable results, and what was the experience like?

Yes, most of us try to take on big dramatic goals and changes Because we want to feel worthy of them When we talk about them to our friends, we want them to be impressed However, change rarely works like that Real change is repetition, repletion, repetition A year ago, I consumed 120 books (Mix of physical and Audio books) But I did not start off reading so much Instead over 9 years I started just reading 30 mins a day Then a few years later I

noticed that I was reading every opportunity I got I had almost stopped listening to music, choosing to listen to an audiobook instead Which is my all my books including Small Actions Big Results have an audio book as well

Time management is a central theme in your book. What is one often-overlooked time management tip that can dramatically enhance productivity?

One of the simplest time management secrets is not to think of meetings in terms of 1-hour and 30-minute chunks when planning for something This often leads to wasted time Instead, plan meetings for just 10 minutes And schedule those 10-minute meetings too You will notice that you get a lot done this way

Your book includes practical exercises designed to help readers implement the habits you discuss How did you approach designing these exercises, and what kind of feedback have you received from those who have put them into practice?

The idea of creating exercises in the book was to make sure people did what they read. The biggest problem with most self-help books is that they do not have an action plan, that can be followed. Or it is sold separately as an extra. I wanted my readers to immediately execute and do the habits that they read so that they could see a tangible difference in their lives.

Your decision to become a Habit Coach™ seems rooted in a deep personal understanding of habits and their impact. Was this career path shaped more by your own experiences and challenges, or did you draw inspiration from seeing others grapple with similar issues? Could you describe the moment or realization that led you to pursue this path and how it has evolved since?

It was a mix of my own personal journey and seeing others struggle with it I talk about this journey in my first Book “Change Your Habits Change Your Life ” I was overweight, unfit and very stressed And collapsed on the floor in my early 30s, with my heart almost beating out of my chest I then created a goal to get a six-pack and change my life around I failed at it miserably in the early months, because I was choosing the hardest exercises to do And the hardest diets Till I discovered Tabata Workouts which are just 4 minutes long and intermittent fasting Mind you, this is 10 years ago Before people knew what intermittent fasting was

Within a year of making small habit changes, I had transformed my life When people would ask me what I had done, I would excitedly tell them But they would stop me and say that they did not have my motivation or selfdiscipline That is when I realized most people fail or stay

In Small Actions, Big Results, Ashdin Doctor, the Habit Coach™, offers practical, no-nonsense strategies to help you navigate the chaos of modern life and boost productivity without succumbing to stress. With simple, easy-to-implement habits like mindfulness and time management techniques, Ashdin shows how small daily actions can lead to big improvements. Each chapter is filled with actionable exercises, allowing you to immediately apply the lessons learned and make real changes. If you're looking to strike the perfect balance between work and life, while increasing efficiency and reducing stress, this book provides the tools to do just that—one habit at a time.

the same because they do not believe they can do it I started the habit coaching industry just so that I could break these myths and see people change their life Which is what I have managed to do the world over

Building new habits is often difficult, and maintaining consistency can be even more challenging. From your perspective, what are the main obstacles that prevent people from staying consistent in their efforts? How does 'Small Actions, Big Results' provide readers with the tools and motivation to overcome these barriers and achieve lasting change?

The biggest difficulty lies in not being able to do the habit they have planned Often in their enthusiasm, they make a habit that is too hard to accomplish with consistency Anyone can do something hard once or twice But change comes when we do it three hundred times So, the habits and the exercises given in my book are designed to be small and easy enough to do so that readers can be consistent with them.

As someone who has coached many individuals in building better habits, what is the most rewarding aspect of witnessing someone successfully transform their daily routine?

The most rewarding thing for me is when their family and friends notice the changes. Often, we notice the change in ourselves but it is very hard to have others change their perception about you When others start noticing the difference in my clients and listeners That is when I feel the most satisfied I often get calls from their mothers and spouses asking me what magic was done How did they achieve something that they had been struggling with for so long?

If you could share a meal with any historical figure who has significantly influenced the world, who would you choose, and why? What question would you pose to them, and what insights would you hope to gain from such a conversation?

I would probably love to meet Jesus Christ Being a Parsi, I know it is a strange ask But I have so many questions about his learnings through his journey Especially the years that are not covered in the Bible I would have so many questions about spirituality etc Not to mention of course unlimited wine!

You wandered through the darkness, Taking a huge risk by walking alone, On the path paved with distress & failure The medal of letdown, Added to your current moment, As the new feather sway in the wind. THE UNDERWORLD SOJOURNERIN

It's hellish, walking through the abyss, Darkness rising to engulf me from every side. Evil, though faceless, comes alive, Threatening with its monstrosities, Harbouring vengeance enough to destroy me, A burning desire to pull me into The black hole of eternity.

In their arsenal lies weaponry, With a power to shatter my spirits, Annihilate my mind, Immobilise me for life. Cruelly, they sing songsShrill, petrifying, I shudder, wallow, try to fight helplessly, As the world closes up on me.

Struggling to breathe, I hallucinate that I'm dying. Barely alive.

Just then, I feel a gentle nudge, A touch on my shoulders, Echoes of my name from the underworld, I think it's your voice, Urging me to reclaim what I'm losing- Power, courage, and the will to live

I take a deep breath, Quivering to rise up through venomous tides, Trembling ,I tread ahead, Towards the brightest blue skies, And bow to the light I seek.
