Anirban Bhattacharyya

In the captivating realm of true crime literature, Anirban Bhattacharyya stands out not only as a bestselling author but also as a keen observer of the human psyche His latest work, Swipe Right to Kill, delves deep into the infamous Jaipur Tinder murder case, exploring the complex lives of those entangled in a web of ambition, deceit, and tragedy In this exclusive interview with Storizen Magazine, Bhattacharyya shares insights into his meticulous research process, the delicate balance of storytelling and factual reporting, and the chilling implications of technology on modern relationships Join us as we uncover the layers of this harrowing tale and the author's unique approach to portraying the darker sides of human nature

Your book vividly portrays the lives of the people involved in the Jaipur Tinder murder case. Could you share your process for researching and understanding the characters? How did you approach capturing their complexities and motivations?

Way back in 2018, when I was writing my first true-crimebook The Deadly Dozen: India’s Most Notorious Serial Killers, this case exploded on the media And it immediately caught my eye As I was already inside the heads of the multiple serial killers to see what makes them who they are, I was immediately drawn to the trio of Priya Seth, Dikshant Kamra and Lakshya Walia I wanted to specifically study the mind of Priya Seth to understand how she trained herself to be one of India’s most sharp and clever conwoman! The case was sub-judice at that point and so I shelved the idea and continued to write 5 books in between 2018 to 2022 And then I returned to the case. I travelled to Jaipur to meet the SHO (Station House Officer) GurBhoopendra Singh and his team who were very helpful in providing insights, prima facie observations while they had been investigating the case, I visited the sights, went through reams of court papers and spoke to a couple of journalists who had reported the case.

All four of them, including Dushyant are complex characters And it is their complexities that push them over the edge They are all grey charactersAmbition, greed, aspirations, a need to grasp the life beyond their means is what drove them I had to think like them, study their body language, read between their lines and their intentions, analyze each action of theirs and sit inside their heads to understand what makes them tick

The book alternates between investigative journalism and storytelling and this is your prowess. This time did you take a any different approach in choosing this narrative style, and how did it enhance the reader's experience? Were there any challenges in balancing factual reporting with engaging storytelling?

The challenge in this case was the paucity of time between the crime itself and the apprehension And so I did not want to just focus on the crime but the more interesting journey and that is the genesis of the criminal mind of Priya How did a studious girl from Falna become one of the coldest killers – what was the journey that she took and this is the same style I adapted for the other two criminals as well and for the victim

In 2018, a grisly discovery on the Delhi-Jaipur Highway exposed a sophisticated con artist, Priya Seth. With her accomplices, she had charmed and swindled hundreds of men. When one victim refused to play along, their greed turned deadly. The Jaipur Tinder Murder Case, as it became known, is a chilling tale of deceit and murder.

What the reader gets to see is the creation of the criminal from scratch And this is where the real thrill, intrigue, masala lies – Priya breaking into an ATM, threatening her ex-boyfriend, blackmailing, and then how she gets initiated into the world of escorts and catphishing – how her mind works to con one thousand men! And so the reader gets to witness this transformation for all the characters.

Just stating facts and figures will not excite the reader. It is not a thesis on criminal psychology and so I always love taking the facts and weaving them into an organic narrative to enable the reader to have an up-close experience. And it is not about just the plot or events but what happens in the silences, in the moments when there’s nothing happening – because it is then, that the devil plays his drums inside their heads! And I want you to hear it!

"Swipe Right to Kill" touches on themes like online dating, trust, and the darker aspects of social media. What message or commentary were you hoping to convey through this case? How do you see technology's impact on relationships and crime?

The Jaipur Tinder Murder Case is probably the one of the first, big cases that introduced the public to catphishing or impersonation on the web that led to a murder. And more than the crime, it was the smiling, remorseless killer in Priya Seth that grabbed people’s attention. Her machinations and modus operandi, once exposed, alerted the public to the world of online scam dating and what extremes it may go to. In my book, there is a constant reminder for the readers to be aware And this is a lesson that we followed in the show Savdhaan India – where we alerted the viewers showing them the red flags Similarly, here I alert

the readers to look out for signs and behavioral patterns to spot a scam. In fact I have a detailed chapter on what to do when online dating, or when it goes from the virtual world to the real world, and what actions to take if things go bad or dangerous I have provided helpline numbers, website information and more The message is clear – Do not believe what you are told, or what you see Always approach these situations with caution It is better to be pessimistic and taking precautions rather than being unrealistic and putting your guard down Trust is precious – don’t share it with everybody

Technology has brought us closer When I was a kid in a boarding school in Kalimpong, I had to wait 15 days for letters to arrive from my parents at Calcutta. Today, we can just make a video call. So tech has helped. But there are criminals like Priya and her friends, or the Jamtara gang or the millions of call centres across the world who harness technology to harm people. Technology is not to be blamed – it is the people who are evil – and they would have become criminals with or without technology Their niyat itself is bad As for us, we have to take precautions and be always cautious when dealing online

As an author, how did you maintain a respectful tone while discussing a real tragedy? What ethical considerations guided your writing process, especially when dealing with sensitive topics related to the victim and the accused?

For me as an author, it was to tell the story from both points of view – the criminals and the victim In both cases, the picture was not pretty Dushyant the victim for example let down his guard and got conned online – but the seed of temptation came

from within himself – he took on a false identity himself so that he could have fun and indulge in affairs online Whereas Priya Seth has a ruthless side to her – and so for me it was how to present the facts, go under their skin and tell it interestingly I treat them as character studies, as subjects within a story and present them with all their blemishes without adding my own moral judgments. It is for the reader to decide.

Your book meticulously reconstructs the events leading up to the murder. What challenges did you face while piecing together the timeline and gathering evidence? How did you verify facts and corroborate information?

I got the information straight from the police team led by SHO GurBhoopendra Singh which solved the case For example – nowhere in the public domain is there a mention in detail of how Gur made the arrest He was travelling in his own unmarked car for instance, the way they approached the vehicle, what was the famous line that the criminals spoke There is a chapter where I take the reader into the scene of crime and I let them watch the collection of the forensic evidence in detail This is to give the reader an exclusive, inside view of what goes on in a police investigation Many people think that just by arresting the accused the case gets solved.

No… after the arrest it becomes the duty of the police to gather evidence and piece it together to nail the accused in court. So the climax actually begins with ‘you are under arrest’ dialogue! The court papers also have details and that helped me to corroborate the research. So this book, because it spans a shorter period of time allowed me to deep-dive into each minute, each hour meticulously instead of doing macro-descriptions of moments – I went into micro details I hope I am making sense!

True crime stories often have a lasting impact on society. What do you hope readers take away from “Swipe Right to Kill”? Do you believe it sheds light on broader issues beyond this specific case?

Just like the show I created Savdhaan India in which each episode gave the viewers a seekh or a takeaway lesson – here, I’d like the readers to learn about the dangers of online and to keep their eyes wide open. The case is also symptomatic of the SEPTEMBER 2024

times where the online world offers users anonymity, and gives them the chance to take decisions that do not have direct consequences or responsibilities. There is a lack of ethics, a wider reinterpretation of morals, people who believe in results and the means do not matter, a sense of entitlement laced with impatience and selfishness. The circle of one’s life has now shrunk from the community to the self. It’s all about I.

As a true crime author, how do you handle the emotional and psychological challenges that come with researching and writing about such intense subjects? Are there any specific techniques or practices you use to manage stress during the process?

Researching is one of the most daunting, tiring, irritating, frustrating and yet the most rewarding and fun experience I feel like a detective or a cop in the hunt for clues, joining the dots, unfolding the layers, stripping away the masks It is brilliant And research is the key in nonfiction/true crime My trick is to take the research step by step or else it is very easy to get overwhelmed and then lost if we try to look for too many things simultaneously. The story has to be broken down into parts and those parts need to be researched so that in the end it is the sum of all parts that come together. True crime is disturbing. Because I get to live in the shoes of the killers and the victims when I am researching or even writing about the case. I get to see the most ugly souls and intentions and it is raw, visceral, nightmarish I then choose how much of it do I show the reader For my first book on serial killers I was completely disturbed for the entire year that I was researching and writing it

Researching is one of the most daunting, tiring, irritating, frustrating and yet the most rewarding and fun experience.

Who do you rely on for objective and constructive feedback on your writing? Is there a particular person or group whose input you find especially valuable when refining your work, ensuring that it meets both factual accuracy and narrative strength?

I personally do not believe in beta-readers and nor do I share the manuscript for qualitative checks or to get feedback from others. You never know what intention they are reading it with. I usually write in one draft or a maximum of two drafts. It is a very stream-of-consciousness style of writing for me. I trust my writing, and the ultimate judge are the readers The only rule I follow is to share the manuscript with my eldest aunt who is the most widely read person I have ever met But she is not a beta-reader – just an aunt who loves my writing –and thankfully she always has words of encouragement and good things to say about the books When the final manuscript is ready I share it with a friend who looks at it with his fresh pair of eyes and helps to spot the typos, missing words, repitations Factual accuracy is my responsibility as I do the research myself And I have been blessed to have had fabulous editors at both Penguin with whom I have a trilogy of true crime, and at Fingerprint with whom I have had two books They allow me to write the way I want. They do not interfere or change my voice/style of writing.

What is next?

So I write across genres (true crime, love story, bildungsroman, YA fiction, poetry) and I have been lucky to have had Suhail Mathur of The Book Bakers who is my lit agent who has managed to juggle my muli-genre books and find the correct home for them So I have just had a horror anthology come out entitled Enter At Your Own Risk (Fingerprint!) – a set of 6 stories based on the real haunted places of India What’s interesting is that it is the world’s 1st ever book with its own background music! So when you are reading a particular scene, you scan a QR code that gives the readers access to the specially composed soundtrack which accompanies them while they read It’s an immersive experience like watching the movie, like being inside the story! I have a celebrity autobiography coming up and of course a mix bag of thrillers and true crime books. Kahaani Abhi Baaki Hai!!!

HOT OFFthe press

In Speaking with Nature, Ramachandra Guha debunks the myth that poorer nations, like India, lack environmental awareness. Long before the Western world embraced environmentalism, ten Indian thinkers—including Rabindranath Tagore and J.C. Kumarappa—were addressing issues like deforestation, urbanization, and industrialization. Guha introduces the concept of 'livelihood environmentalism,' contrasting it with the West's privileged approach, offering a fresh, globally relevant perspective on humanity’s relationship with nature.

Tell Me Everything by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Elizabeth Strout is a moving story of love, friendship, and the need for connection. In a small Maine town, lawyer Bob Burgess defends a man accused of murder while bonding with author Lucy Barton. Lucy also forms a friendship with Olive Kitteridge, and together they reflect on life’s untold stories. This heartfelt novel explores how relationships sustain us, reminding us, as Lucy says, "Love takes many forms, but it's always love."

In September 1924, John Marshall announced the discovery of the Indus (Harappan) civilization, a 4,500year-old society alongside Mesopotamia and Egypt, tied to Bronze Age trade. How did it influence later Vedic and Tantric thought? Did it shape Buddhist and Jain monasticism? Was their script like modern emojis? Why are there images of rivalry but none of war or romance, and why did cities decline while villages thrived? Devdutt Pattanaik explores these questions in Ahimsa, highlighting the lasting impact of Harappan culture in modern India and Pakistan.

DWINDLING ICE

y grandpagathers the floating fishing net, but no fish has been trapped. He releases the net into the water.

“No fish over here. Perhaps we’ll have to go deep into the sea ” He says, embittered by fatigue

“Is it the warm weather, grandpa?” I ask, slumping down on one side of the motorboat

He nods his head and takes off his cap A spurt of sweat runs down his forehead to his square, hairy chin

“What do we do now?”

The boat bobs over the waves that leap and tussle among themselves just like our uninvited thoughts

“Boy, we’ll do what we’ve been doing for centuries Adapt ” Grandpa wipes his forehead with his hand and continues, “I remember a folktale that my grandmother used to narrate when I was a kid Probably of your age twelve or thirteen ” His eyes are distant lost in reveries of childhood my heart has no surmise of, or the exasperation on visualizing the wraith of life’s changing dreams He has witnessed the kayaks getting replaced with motorboats, dog sledges with snowmobiles, harpoons with automatic rifles He has seen it all.

“A long time ago there was a sorcerer named Kúnigseq. One day he got the floor of his house sluiced with salt water to ward off the evil smell before calling his beneficial spirits. Without moving an inch, he began to shift downward through the floor. On his way, he found a reef covered with seaweed. It was so slippery that none could cross it. One of the helpful spirits lay down on it, and he stepped on him to pass that way ” Grandpa pauses for a moment to breathe He’s trying to breathe as naturally as possible, but it seems to be labored

I recall how we tramped through the dirt-tinged slush of the coastline with difficulty a while ago If we listen carefully, we can hear the noise of the glacial retreat ice buzzing and crackling while melting along with the sediments carried by the gurgling, liquefied water The mountains are being stripped of their ice, and rivers of slurry are cascading down to the sea

“As he went along, he found a great slope covered with heather Further down in the

underworld, there was plain land, and the hills were small. The Sun shone brightly, and the azure sky was like what we see from the Earth.” Grandpa swallows his own saliva. We are in an undulating topography in the northernmost part of the globe where the sun doesn’t show up half the year. During the other half, it emerges but seems withdrawn, detached But this year it has made its presence felt In the battle between fire and ice, the fire has won, perhaps permanently It is the beginning of summer, and the temperature is already so high above 10-degree Centigrade Constant mudslides and loss of permafrost across the polar territory are constant features observed here The oncefrozen ground is sinking as it’s exhaling the captive carbon into the air

“Kúnigseq found some children playing by a tiny river, looking for grayfish He located his mother with a basket of berries Emotionally driven, she tried to kiss him, but the spirit stopped her from doing so She offered him berries As he was about to eat them, the spirit insisted that Kúnigseq was only on a visit and could not eat berries If he did so, he would never return ” Grandpa makes a soft sound as if a polar bear is sniffing about in search of food I turn around from the bluegreen sea waves to find him unconsciously clawing his hands over his full-sleeve shirt His eyes swollen, face smoldering in a flame of crimson Is he hiding something from me?

“A few paces further on, Kúnigseq met his dead brother His mother insisted that he should stay back, as his entire kin was there It was a good place to reside with the seaboard having great stores of dried meat Seals were easily available at any time of the year. There was no snow and a beautiful open sea. Everything was peaceful, even the sea calm and tranquil without the slightest wind.” He continues in between gasps and wheezes, perhaps picturing the turbulent weather at the sea and snow blizzards that are normal in our region. Grandpa often says that our lives are just like the marine mammals that rely on sea ice to hunt their prey. With temperatures falling to as low as –50 degrees Celsius during the winter months, we’re perfectly adapted to the climate, drawing a sustainable livelihood from the natural environment without unbalancing it We hunt seals, walruses, and whales in the winter, and in the summer, we seek caribou, fish in the rivers and lakes, snare birds and their eggs, collect berries and herbs

“Kúnigseqtold them that he’d join them when he died They asked him to send some ice as they were deprived of cold water down there Back on Earth, Kúnigseq’s son was seriously ill and soon afterward, he passed away Without the will to live any longer, he ventured out in his kayak He caught a guillemot and a raven After having them one after the other, he breathed his last They threw his body out into the sea ” Grandpa slouches his shoulders, gazes at the sea and beyond where conundrum and peril breed indefinitely Are there any fastnesses ancestral or contemporary where one

can find shelter from the unpredictability of Nature?

Along with the marine mammals, we are wandering in dwindling circles, while the snow beneath our feet is in ever-decreasing mode, its skeleton encased by a moat of its watery lamentation

Unexpectedly, we find Aput, Grandpa’s childhood friend and our neighbor, waving at us from the rugged coastline

“The scientists are here Come along with me, wise-old Ikiaq ” Aput shouts

Grandpa waves back and drives the motorboat shoreward

“The scientists from the big cities have come to discuss climate change You know how it is I’ll have to be there ” Grandpa frowns

As we reach the shore, grandpa and I jump down, drag our boat landward. Grandpa starts scratching his hands, nails digging into his shirt, initially lightly and then violently, while his whole body jerks involuntarily.

“What’s wrong?” I ask, on seeing streaks of blood on his shirt.

Grandpa looks up at me in between twitching of his facial muscles, rolls up his sleeves I see rashes all over his hands sore and red, with some clusters of bruises He picks up a palmful of mud and applies it on his rashes His taut face calms down, as the muscles relax We tread carefully over the slippery mud until we reach the higher ground where Aput is waiting for us

“A lot of people are having these rashes due to the heat Anti-microbial medicines give relief only for a while Why don’t you apply melted seal fat on it? It works wonders

Try it, Ikiaq I’ve some preserved at home ” Aput says

“I’m feeling better now What’s the point of having this meeting? We don’t have food, and the weather is unusually warm It’s all because of the technologically advanced countries that are contributing toward greenhouse gases We, at the North, are facing the consequences ” Grandpa says with an eye-roll

On hearing an unfamiliar sound, we turn around toward the sea and a tiny ship materializes on the distant horizon

“Who are they?” Grandpa asks

We all gawp at the ship that’s like a matchbox with a flag on the sea and gradually becomes bigger and bigger Someone from the deck flings an anchor down below and lowers a small boat A team of four people climb down and settle on the boat that rows toward us

“We’ve brought provisions for you ” A smartly dressed man says

“But we already received that a month ago.” Grandpa speaks proudly in English he has learnt recently.

“Probably that isn’t enough. There’s a shift in the climate and you need more food. We’re going to provide it to your community.” He says, smiling genially upon him.

“But why? You’re a far more progressive, civilized nation.” Grandpa’s brows rise to his forehead.

“We’re one human civilization, and our motto is humanity We’re going to deal with the climate change together ”

Grandpa’s eyes gleam with an emotion of transcendent brightness, and an assuring smile that’s boundto stay for long

In Nature’s Arms

anjib Bagchi ambled through the dense Krishna National Park forest, on crackling twigs and fallen leaves underfoot. The smell of damp earth, the stale, wet scents of rotting wood, and the allpervasive fragrance of the shrubs meant home to him!The sun’s rays were breaking through the leaves in places, allowing him to glimpse chattering squirrels that leapt out of his way The hum of insects and scrambling of lizards on tree barks was soothing He spotted wild mushrooms and took a picture to check with the boss whether they were edible Maybe he’d get a respite from the lentils and rice he had every day His life was like a dream when he thought about the past, where he had struggled to have just one meal a day

Sanjib had been living here since his transfer from a forest in West Bengal He was uneducated and did menial jobs that were required in the reserve forest

The forest and its biodiversity awed him every day He regarded it as a blessing, and thanked the forest deities for keeping him safe each day Sal, Oak, Chestnut, Pine, and trees whose names he couldn’t even pronounce stood like sentries guarding its precious residents The forest reminded him of a painting, wildflowers had sprung up here and there, attracting a variety of colorful butterflies and birds that fed on their nectar. Here in the arms of nature, Sanjib felt an unbreakable kinship to everything around him; his spirit was one with the forest.

As he walked, some monkeys called out warnings from the branches above and he saw his favourite monkey species, the Langur. They were a large family of about 10 to 12 members. Sanjib didn’t make eye contact as they were unpredictable but was fond of them thinking of the monkey god, Hanuman

He remembered his experience with the baby Langur, something he’d never forget!

A year ago, Sanjib had come across a Langur baby that had fallen off and lay shrieking as he got closer The baby had looked stunned, but there were no bones broken or anything He had got a cardboard box to put the creature inside, placing it on a sturdy nook made by tree branches He had shut the flaps of the box partially so that the baby wouldn’t get more agitated, and kept going back each hour anxiously, to check on it He had been relieved to see a family of Langurs approach the box finally,

but they didn’t get closer. Would they abandon the baby?

He had given no thought to the danger it posed to him, and picked up the box to show them the baby inside One large male had gotten close enough and Sanjib gazed into its velvety brown eyes They looked almost human! Sanjib had stood still, his arms aching, as his heart thumped loudly, and lowered his eyes The Langur had come closer, sniffed the baby and suddenly snatched it as Sanjib let out a gasp They had left as abruptly as they had come Looking into those eyes that day, he had seen the intelligence and it had felt to him that the Langur was measuring him up He had said a small prayer to Hanuman that day for returning the baby back safely

Sanjib passed one of the armed guards with whom he sometimes shared food, and they exchanged greetings He checked the forest perimeter daily for anything unusual to report His immediate boss was not a chatty man either, so they got along just fine He walked noticing that one more camera was malfunctioning He made a note in his head of the exact spot that was marked by the poisonous yellow mushrooms It was a familiar path and he’d remember the details

They had cameras in several places in the forests but in the last few months some of them weren’t working Their repeated complaints had not been answered so far. Sanjib liked to check those places at least twice a day. Poachers were always about and one of their guards had died at their hands.

The poachers colluded with locals to get information about the forest. Sanjib had been instructed not to engage with poachers at any time, merely report it. Their officers and armed guards were on patrol, in shifts.

Sanjib completed his first round and came back home He lived in a small hut that had a narrow bed, a cupboard and shelves on the wall to store utensils A makeshift toilet was outside The boss’s cabin was a few minutes away and had a nice washroom with running water that he preferred His boss travelled a few kilometres from home to the forest daily

Sanjib took off after lunch, and carried a sturdy stick with him He would be going deeper into the forest this time, and had two hours at the most to finish his rounds before sundown After a while he neared the edge of the forest, and heard the sound of water This was a small hillock with its waterfall and a narrow stream below The path was on an incline and soon he felt the warm sun on his face, as he came to a clearing of Pine trees He perched on a large rock wedged between two tall Pines and leaned back Belowthestream flowed between jagged rocks and the sun shone in the blue skies, and Sanjib felt a fierce desire to protect this bit of heaven If he was lucky, he would get to see larger animals like deer or a bear

or two He was safe here from them, or so he hoped as bears could climb trees!

Sanjib heard steps and turned to see a man he had met before This was the local who was friendly with the poachers Once they had met at the market, and the man had asked him to switch off the cameras from the cabin, so their activities wouldn’t be recorded Sanjib had flatly refused and had made an enemy instantly

Sanjib made no effort to greet him as the man got closer and smiled at him, his mean eyes declaring his intention The man was taller than him and Sanjib had an ominous feeling! He clenched his stick tighter. How had he snuck up to him so quietly?

Before he could think, the man flashed a vicious knife and lunged at him. Sanjib felt a sharp pain in his right arm and saw blood. He was going to die and no one could save him! He prayed! The birds went quiet. Sanjib heard his heart beat loudly as he felt blood flow out of his forearm.

He sidestepped the next move as the knife missed him by little How could he defend himself against a trained thug like this one? Sanjib was breathing hard and waving his stick to parry the knife’s blow, but the man laughed and kicked him hard and he fell to the side, watching his stick go down the hillock It was over for him!

He shut his eyes and waited for the knife to pierce him The trees above shook as he suddenly heard something rush past Sanjib opened his eyes to watch in horror as the man flailed and fell backwards over the hillock, his scream echoing He saw a few Langurs race by and vanish into the forest Cradling his injured arm, he tied his tee shirt around it tightly, and made his way back He would report the man but felt no remorse for his end Sanjib’s hands shook as he realized that he owed his life to the Langurs, and a good deal of luck as his boss would say! He hadn’t noticed the Langurs’ presence when he first sat on the rock

His mind asked a hundred questions, were they the same bunch he had met before? Did they actually recognize him and had protected him? So many unanswered questions, but for Sanjib, Mother Nature and Hanuman were one and the same He would not get answers and he was content with it. There was far more going on in this world than we would ever understand!

GARDEN WITH A VIEW

It was a sultry summer day. No amount of gulping icecream smooched coffee shakes or squeezing lemonades could evaporate the thin film of perspiration which seemed to have permanently settled on the skin. The garden overlooking the porch was however looking resplendent with the untamed grasses and unpruned mango trees bursting with succulent fruits The squirrels scurrying in an inexplicable hurry, probably entangled in a secret game with the parakeets and pigeons stretching and racing in the blue firmament

I decided to write a short piece, paying my accolades to the charming scenery unfolding before me but a big ink drop smudging the letters seemed to me a sign to halt my whim and I resorted to lazily sip my lemonade, the strawmaking an uncivilized sound

Two little boys gallivanted past, their bicycles tinkling as they crisscrossed their ways, probably homeward-bound after a long school day One boy suddenly turned back and approached in my direction A bit concerned I looked up when he said “Ma’am there’s a snake loitering in the garage ”On an impulse I jumped up, the lemonade making a dirty trail on the dust-laden porch when I shouted “Don’t go that side kid, run along, thanks ”

Really had no idea whether they acted out of concern or pure jest but the snake was nowhere in sight.Instead, a swishing sound broke my reverie and as I swerved around with surprising agility, I noticed a peacock with its plumage studded in effervescent colors in full display just for my perusal. The reaction was spontaneous. The majestic regality transfixed me and I stared at it in silent appreciation. The entire assemblage was breathtaking, the dancing grasses, the rustling leaves, the juvenile animals and the radiant peacock, all finding their own place in my garden Even the broken glass edges were reflecting sunrays enveloping the small space in a shimmering rainbow A magic woven by an invisible wand spurning tranquility which was suddenly and abruptly torn by the jarred end of an uneven stone It was intended for the mangoes hanging low on the bough but accidentally hit the peacock, the plumage immediately retracted as it receded to the safety of the dense woods, its large tail making a wavy pattern as it blended in the afternoon air, depriving me of the chance to thank it for the splendid show As my eyes scanned its trail, the

splashed screens and the frantic clicks of the cellphones of the passersby gawking at the bird caught my attention ”They must have scared it away ”I noted with a faint hint of indignation As I looked back, the squirrels were nowhere in sight, probably huddled in a loosely dug burrow to save themselves from the cacophony of rapacious men who had now congregated beneath the mango tree and started a heated brawl about their share of mangoes Stones scattered unceremoniously on the grounds, among them lay bestrewn a dozen mangoes while they nonchalantly trespassed into my garden

When I told them to leave, albeit somewhat impertinently they said they were arranging dinner, too indigent to buy a proper meal looking here and there for day jobs and for a square meal To which I nodded as the plethora of thoughts flooding my brain somewhat immobilized my tongue, rendering me unable to come up with a coherent reply After the laborers scampered away,I looked at the scene unfurled before me, broken shards of borosilicate glass, dreikenters thrown haphazardly on the uncut grass, the stain of the lemonade and a palpable quiet occasionally perforated by distant crows and chirps. The sun almost dipping in the western sky, a mellowed hue painting the horizon, the trees crowned in a halo, amplifying their verdant colors and a smooth rewarding breeze kissing away the blanket of sweat which was so obdurately sitting on my skin the entire day.

The two little boys came back, now chuckling “Told you snakes were lurking ”

I could not help but reply “Cracked mirrors give distorted views ”

To their confounded expression I added “We are blessed to have a plain mirror Now goodbye kids ” The confused look lingered on their chubby faces as I smiled meekly before entering my room at last

An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon

Rivers Solomon's "An Unkindness of Ghosts" is a profound and immersive novel, set aboard a generation ship, Matilda, where a deeply segregated society mirrors the horrors of the antebellum South The lower decks are inhabited by Black and brown individuals

subjected to brutal oversight, while the white upper deckers-control resources, comfort, and religion. Through the eyes of Aster, a neurotypical and gendernonconforming healer, readers are drawn into a world both brutal and tender, where survival is intertwined with hidden knowledge and personal rebellion Solomon's stunning world-building and rich social commentary make this novel both a powerful dystopia and a reflection on historical injustices Talking about the story is Aster's quest to uncover the secrets surrounding her mother's death and the failing power source of Matilda Aster’s unique connection to the ship’s Surgeon General, Theo, a light-skinned outsider like herself, offers her rare opportunities to explore the ship’s deeper mysteries Solomon’s portrayal of Aster is masterful, as she navigates both physical and emotional landscapes, uncovering clues about her mother’s past and the ship's darker truths. The intricate details of life aboard *Matilda*, from dialect differences to cultural norms, create a textured backdrop for Aster’s journey. What makes "An Unkindness of Ghosts" particularly striking is its exploration of identity, gender, and the trauma of enslavement. Solomon deftly illustrates how rigid social structures dehumanize, while Aster’s character provides a counterpoint of resilience, compassion, and unrelenting curiosity The nuanced depiction of relationships especially the fraught friendship between Aster and Theo adds layers of complexity to the narrative Solomon also offers a brutal yet honest portrayal of how oppression breeds cruelty even among the oppressed, while still allowing space for hope and tenderness The novel’s ending, while abrupt, leaves readers with a sense of unfinished business, mirroring the open wounds of both past and present injustices The precision and beauty of Solomon’s prose elevate the novel, leaving a lasting impact Though not a book that provides easy comfort, "An Unkindness of Ghosts" is an essential read an antidote to false narratives and a call for introspection and change

It is a story of survival, reclamation, and the relentless pursuit of truth in the face of systemic oppression.

Big Fiction by Dan Sinykin

Dan Sinykin's “Big Fiction: How Conglomeration Changed the Publishing Industry and American Literature” delves into the impact of conglomeration on the American publishing industry and its farreaching effects on literary production and the concept of authorship. This

insightful book offers a thorough examination of how the corporatization of publishing has altered the landscape of American literature, affecting not only what gets published but also the role of authors within this system By charting the industry's trajectory since the 1960s, Sinykin presents a compelling case for understanding modern literary culture through the lens of corporate influence One of the book's central arguments is how the conglomeration of publishing houses has reshaped literary genres and authorship Sinykin emphasizes that the publishing process has evolved into a collective effort, involving not just authors but also agents, editors, and marketers This shift reflects broader cultural and economic changes, where authors are no longer seen as isolated creators but as part of a larger commercial ecosystem Sinykin argues that this has led to a homogenization of literary output, where marketability often trumps artistic innovation Author Sinykin adopts a cultural materialist perspective, linking literary production to the economic forces shaping it. He critiques the romantic notion of the author as a solitary genius, instead presenting authorship as a socially constructed and commercially driven endeavor. Through this lens, the book explores how conglomerate publishers' priorities often influence the types of books that reach the market. As a result, literature becomes less about artistic expression and more about adhering to commercial demands In his exploration of the publishing industry's history, Sinykin traces its evolution from the post-World War II era to the present day, highlighting key figures like Toni Morrison and Cormac McCarthy By examining the rise of mass-market paperbacks, the growing influence of literary agents, and the dominance of major publishing houses, Sinykin offers readers a historical context that underscores how conglomeration has shaped literary trends Notably, he also draws attention to how novels like *Beloved* and *Infinite Jest* can be interpreted as products of corporate pressures, providing a fresh allegorical reading of contemporary literature Overall, “Big Fiction” has an accessible narrative style and extensive research that entices the readers Author Dan Sinykin skillfully weaves together industry profiles, historical analysis, and personal anecdotes, making complex topics more relatable for both academic and general audiences. His exploration of the publishing world offers a critical lens through which to view the changing dynamics of American literature, urging readers to reconsider how economic forces shape the stories we consume and the voices that create them.

Mellors critiques societal perceptions of addiction, presenting it not as a moral failing but as a complex issue shaped by personal pain and family dynamics.

Her nuanced approach to these themes, combined with the novel's beautiful writing and hopeful message, will resonate deeply with readers who appreciate characterdriven narratives with emotional depth.

Olivia Petter’s "Gold Rush" is a thoughtprovoking debut novel that delves deep into the tangled world of celebrity culture, consent, and the complex dynamics of fame Set in the pre-MeToo era, Petter masterfully explores the allure and pitfalls of the influencer age, while examining how online

media magnifies and distorts reality Through a gripping narrative, she reveals the darker undercurrents of a world obsessed with glamour and status, offering readers a powerful reflection on contemporary society The story centers on Rose, a young woman who seems to have it all an enviable job at a prestigious publishing house, access to glamorous parties, and a seemingly perfect life However, her world is turned upside down after a night with Milo Jax, a British pop star. Waking up with fragmented memories of their encounter, Rose grapples with the uncertainty surrounding what really happened. As she pieces together the events, she is forced to confront troubling questions about consent, power, and how women’s bodies are often commodified in a world ruled by celebrity culture. "Gold Rush" tackles several crucial themes, with consent at its heart. Petter deftly navigates the blurry lines between intoxication, desire, and genuine agreement, prompting readers to think about the significance of boundaries and communication The novel also shines a critical light on the pedestal society places celebrities on, questioning the power and immunity we often grant them Furthermore, the pervasive impact of online media, where every action is scrutinized and lives are lived publicly, adds another layer to Rose’s internal and external struggles, making the narrative all the more relevant This novel can be seen drawing comparisons to "My Dark Vanessa" by Kate Elizabeth Russell, as both works explore relationships with significant power imbalances and the trauma that ensues While "Gold Rush" doesn’t dive as deeply into the emotional scars of such relationships, it offers a nuanced examination of how consent and exploitation intertwine in the context of fame and desire. The influence of social media on self-worth and personal choices is another theme that resonates powerfully throughout the book. "Gold Rush" attempts to dissect consent and fame’s insulating power but feels that the story doesn’t fully reach its potential. On the other hand, Author Olivia Petter’s ability to capture the voices of young women and effectively explore the themes of power and consent is well shown The novel also reflects for its richness and nuance, that lingering and thought-provoking read In conclusion, Olivia Petter’s "Gold Rush" is a striking reflection on celebrity culture, the complexities of consent, and the power dynamics that shape our world With sharp writing and a keen understanding of contemporary issues,

Olivia Petter offers a cautionary tale that will leave readers questioning the price of fame and the consequences of living in a world obsessed with image and status.

This is a must-read for anyone seeking a novel that balances entertainment with meaningful exploration of today’s most pressing social concerns.

In "Hira Paints the Town", Hira is a girl who LOVES painting, and her world is like one big rainbow. But when she gets married and moves to a new city, everything around her is dull and gray. How can anyone live without colour? Luckily, Hira comes up with

a brilliant plan to make her new city beautiful again using her artistic skills, turning a boring place into something magical with her paintbrush. The story by Jaya Jaitly and the illustrations by Herra Kant in this book are absolutely amazing! The pages are full of vibrant Madhubani-style art that brings the story to life It's like jumping into a colorful dream Plus, the font is perfect for young readers, though a slightly bigger font might make it even more fun to read What's really cool is that the pictures are inspired by traditional Indian art, so kids are not just enjoying a great story but also learning about their cultural heritage in a fun way! In this book, technology helps solve both a personal and a community problem a girl who dreams of painting and a city that needs some color and life It's amazing how the two come together so seamlessly, creating a perfect solution for both Hira takes help from Aman who scans all of the beautiful paintings that she drew on paper and puts them in his computer One of the best parts of the book is at the end, where there’s a space for kids to draw and color just like Hira

It's a chance for them to become the artist and paint their own town. This makes the story super interactive, and any kid who loves art or creativity will adore this book.

"How Ganesha Got His Laddoos" by Jaya Jaitly is the funniest, coolest book ever! First of all, the pictures? They’re so amazing! Thanks to illustrator Apindra Swain for her drawing and without any doubt, young readers will forget to read the words! The artwork is all Indian-style, like super fancy drawings, and it makes

the whole story feel extra special. It's like you're getting a mini art lesson while having tons of fun with the story. Plus, we don’t usually see Indian art in any books, so it’s awesome to have that right in front of us every day. Okay, so here's the best part – Ganesha, the god with the elephant head, has a big problem. He LOVES laddoos (who doesn’t, right?), but people are so busy nowadays, they forgot to offer him his favorite treat! So what does Ganesha do? He goes online! Yep, Ganesha literally goes to a computer class and learns how to order laddoos How cool is that? It’s like mixing old-school gods with modernday tech, and it made me giggle so much "Miss-calling" and "on-lining" are my new favorite words! Oh, and don’t forget Mooshika, the little mouse sidekick He pops up on every page, dropping wisdom bombs called “gyaan bullets” – like a mouse-sized guru! And at the end, there’s space for you to draw or color, which makes it feel like the book is your own masterpiece too

Overall, this book is totally laddoo-licious, and Ganesha shows us that learning new skills can be the tastiest way to solve problems!

Roswell Johnson Saves the World by Chris Colfer

Chris Colfer's “Roswell Johnson Saves the World!” marks an exciting new venture into the realm of science fiction for the beloved author, known for his previous fantasy series, The Land of Stories This book is the first in a new series that promises to blend adventure, humor, and heartfelt themes,

making it a captivating read for middle-grade audiences and beyond The story follows eleven-year-old Roswell Johnson, a seventh grader from Cherokee Springs, Oklahoma, who is fascinated by extraterrestrial life, a passion inherited from his late father. The narrative kicks off during a school science fair, where Roswell's dreams come true when he is accidentally abducted by aliens. This event leads him to discover that not only are aliens real, but they also need his help to save Earth from a tyrannical invasion. Colfer skillfully weaves in themes of prejudice and acceptance, as Roswell grapples with his own experiences of discrimination while witnessing the diverse alien species working together in the Galactic Alliance This subplot, while meaningful, has been noted by some reviewers as feeling rushed and somewhat disconnected from the overall tone of the book The supporting characters are a delightful mix of quirky extraterrestrials, including bickering Grays, a humorless Cyborg, and a germophobic Mantis, each contributing to the humor and charm of the story The found family dynamic is a central theme, reminiscent of Colfer's previous works, and adds depth to the characters as they navigate their challenges together Colfer demonstrates his talent for crafting an engaging and entertaining narrative that keeps readers on their toes His writing is notably accessible, making it an excellent choice for young readers while also resonating with adults who appreciate the deeper themes of hope and unity. The book features delightful illustrations and a charming spaceship motif at the beginning of each chapter, enhancing the sense of a thrilling space adventure. Additionally, the glossary at the end serves as a helpful resource, enriching the reading experience. Roswell Johnson's Saves the World effectively tackles issues of prejudice and racism by embedding these themes within an engaging and fantastical storyline Colfer's approach not only entertains but also educates young readers about the importance of acceptance, empathy, and the power of diversity in overcoming challenges

With its mix of adventure, humor, and poignant themes, Roswell Johnson Saves the World invites readers to embark on a journey that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.

In "Sad Glad", Sidhartha Mallya crafts a tender exploration of emotional awareness through the eyes of young Sid and his loyal canine companion, Duke The book poignantly addresses the challenges of navigating complex emotions, including the darker, less pleasant ones As Sid wakes up feeling out of sorts, Duke steps in with comforting advice, guiding him to understand and embrace his feelings rather than suppress them Mallya’s message is clear: it's perfectly fine to have off days and acknowledging these emotions is a crucial step towards self-compassion The story cleverly combines rhyming dialogue from Duke with a more conversational tone from Sid, aiming to connect with readers across generations While the approach is engaging, the concepts covered such as the importance of validating emotions are familiar to many, and the language occasionally lacks the depth needed to fully captivate the reader. However, the book is visually enhanced by Vibha Surya’s illustrations, which use a dynamic colour palette to mirror Sid’s emotional journey, from somber shades to vibrant hues. A standout feature of "Sad Glad" is its analogy of emotions to weather patterns, encouraging readers to embrace their feelings, much like experiencing rain to appreciate a rainbow Duke’s wisdom, reflected in phrases like “experience the rain to see the rainbow,” serves as a gentle reminder that emotions, both good and bad, are natural and transient This metaphor, along with the book’s overall focus on naming and understanding emotions, aims to simplify complex feelings for young readers While Mallya’s personal experience with depression lends authenticity to the narrative, "Sad Glad" may not offer new insights for those familiar with emotional health literature Nonetheless, it provides a heartfelt effort to support children through their emotional ups and downs

Despite its occasional shortcomings, the book’s reassuring tone and charming illustrations make it a comforting read for children and a valuable addition to discussions about emotional well-being.

The

The Dust Draws Its Face on the Wind by Avinash Shrestha

"The Dust Draws Its Face on the Wind: Selected Poems" introduces Englishspeaking audiences to the evocative world of contemporary Nepali poetry through the works of Avinash Shrestha, translated by Rohan Chhetri This collection is notable for its unique fusion of Nepali vernacular with

high diction rooted in Sanskrit, along with elements of Hindu liturgy and Vedic cosmology. Shrestha’s poetry, characterized by its surrealist and syncretic nature, marries the tender aspects of surrealism with postmodern aesthetics, creating a deeply immersive reading experience. Shrestha’s poetry often grapples with the ineffable, straddling the boundaries of metaphysics and theology. The poet’s attempts to articulate the inexpressible can occasionally come across as elusive, yet these very attempts highlight his willingness to engage with profound existential questions His work invites readers to confront the complexity of human experience, even if it means navigating through abstract and challenging concepts Rohan Chhetri’s translation efforts are both ambitious and insightful As an award-winning poet and translator, Chhetri brings a nuanced understanding to this project, making it the first serious book-length translation of contemporary Nepali poetry into English His collaboration with Shrestha adds a layer of depth, although the inclusion of original Nepali poems alongside their English translations can sometimes distract from the reading experience Chhetri’s addition of personal epigraphs to the translations adds a unique touch, offering readers additional layers of interpretation For example, in the translated poem "Relative", Rohan intricately explores the interplay between beauty and sorrow, suggesting that what appears beautiful may harbour deeper sadness, and vice versa. It delves into natural imagery and abstract concepts, such as age and illusion, to reflect on the complexities of perception and reality. Rich in evocative language, the poem uses vivid imagery and contrasts to highlight the transient nature of time and the layered experiences of life. Its free verse structure and sparse punctuation create a fluid, contemplative tone, encouraging readers to reflect on the nature of existence and their perceptions The lack of a fixed metrical structure and rhyme scheme aligns with the poem's themes of complexity and illusion, making it a timeless exploration of human experience Overall, "The Dust Draws Its Face on the Wind" is a compelling exploration of beauty, sorrow, and the interplay of perception and reality Shrestha’s use of rich imagery and complex themes, combined with Chhetri’s thoughtful translation, offers readers an opportunity to delve into a distinctive poetic tradition While the work may pose challenges due to its abstract nature and the structural choices in the translation, it remains a significant contribution to the global literary landscape

The Identity Project by Rahul Bhatia

Rahul Bhatia’s "The Identity Project - An Unmaking of a democracy" is a meticulously researched and deeply unsettling investigation into the rise of Hindu nationalism in India and its profound impact on the country’s

democratic fabric The book traces the historical roots of this movement, from the emergence of Dayanand Saraswati and the Arya Samaj in the 1800s, to the early 20th-century ideologues who drew inspiration from European fascism. Bhatia presents a comprehensive narrative that explores how this fundamentalist ideology has quietly reshaped India’s political landscape, culminating in the devastating Delhi riots of 2020. Through interviews, historical documents, and firsthand accounts, Bhatia reveals the far-reaching consequences of the movement on both personal and national levels The book is not only insightful but also highly accessible, with a comfortable font size and clear, neutral language that makes it an easy read despite the weighty subject matter Bhatia maintains an impartial tone throughout, which allows readers to form their own opinions about the issues discussed His exploration of India’s biometric identification project, Aadhaar, is particularly compelling What was originally intended as a development tool has now become a means of targeting minority communities Bhatia deftly connects the dots between the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National Register of Citizens (NRC), and this database to show how these tools are shaping a dangerous two-tier system of citizenship in the country What sets "The Identity Project" apart is its ability to balance human stories with larger political and historical themes. Through personal accounts of riot survivors, historians, and activists, Bhatia brings to life the human impact of rising extremism and the government’s role in fostering it. These stories provide the emotional core of the book while remaining grounded in a neutral tone, making the complex issues more relatable to readers. Moreover, Bhatia highlights the role of media and judicial systems, revealing how shifts in editorial and legal decisions have aligned with nationalist ideologies In addition to its compelling narrative, the book includes helpful references at the end, which guide readers who wish to delve deeper into the subject Overall, "The Identity Project" is an essential and timely read for anyone seeking to understand the forces reshaping India today With seven years of research behind it, the book uncovers the historical insecurities and religious tensions fueling identity politics in the country Bhatia’s clear, well-structured writing, combined with detailed references, makes this book a thought-provoking and necessary contribution to the conversation about India’s future

Dehejia invites readers on a philosophical and spiritual journey through the aesthetics of Indian art, guided by the principles of Vedanta. The book delves into the deeper layers of meaning embedded in traditional Indian art, encouraging us to engage with these

creations not only through our senses but also through the "third eye" a metaphor for intuitive understanding and spiritual insight. Dehejia offers a profound exploration of how art, philosophy, and spirituality intertwine, creating an immersive aesthetic experience that transcends surface beauty Drawing from Vedanta, Dehejia illustrates how Indian art reflects spiritual concepts such as the unity of the soul (Atman) with the universal reality (Brahman) Through the depiction of divine figures and symbolic motifs like the lotus, Indian art invites contemplation of these Vedantic themes The third eye allows us to move beyond mere visual appreciation to engage with the underlying spiritual truths in the art This meditative approach to art mirrors the introspective practices of Vedanta, fostering a deeper connection between the viewer and the artwork

A key element of the book is Dehejia’s exploration of *Kamana*, the refinement of desire, through the third eye In his poetic narrative, Dehejia presents *Kamana* as a sacred art an inward journey where we seek the essence of our desires rather than chasing their external forms. The book’s chapters unfold like the petals of a lotus, revealing the transformative power of the third eye in shaping our yearnings. This Strange Eventful History by

Claire Messud's “This Strange Eventful History” explores themes of identity, exile, and family through the fictionalized account of her own ancestors The novel focuses on the Cassar family, French settlers in Algeria, whose lives are irrevocably altered by the Algerian War of Independence and the

broader forces of history At the heart of the story is the tension between national identity and personal history, as the Cassars grapple with their sense of belonging, both in France and in Algeria. Messud intricately weaves their struggles with exile, dislocation, and the complexity of familial relationships to create a poignant narrative about loss and identity. Gaston Cassar, the family patriarch, serves as the novel’s anchor. Stationed as a naval attaché in Greece during World War II, Gaston is frustrated by his inability to contribute meaningfully to France’s war effort, while also yearning for his wife and children His own sense of identity is deeply tied to his Mediterranean roots, yet his disillusionment with his role in the war mirrors the family's larger displacement from Algeria His personal sacrifices, including abandoning his literary aspirations for a business career, set the tone for the struggles of subsequent generations, as they navigate the loss of both homeland and identity François Cassar, Gaston's son, emerges as the most complex character, torn between his French upbringing and his desire to assimilate into American culture His ambivalence towards nationality, coupled with personal disappointments, creates a sense of alienation and internal conflict Like his father, François is forced to prioritize his family’s financial security over personal fulfillment, leading to feelings of loneliness and frustration. His marriage to Barbara, a Canadian who dislikes America, further complicates his sense of belonging, while his sister Denise clings to the idealized image of their parents’ union as her only constant. Throughout the novel, Messud’s focus remains on the intricacies of relationships rather than plot. The Cassar family's struggles with identity, both as individuals and as part of a larger national narrative, form the emotional core of the book Messud’s nuanced portrayal of these characters culminates in a stunning revelation toward the end, recontextualizing much of what has come before

This slow-building tension and the eventual revelation highlight Messud's narrative genius, making “This Strange Eventful History” a compelling and thoughtprovoking exploration of family and identity.

Threads That Bind by Nalini

Mythology plays a crucial role in children’s development by igniting their imagination and offering valuable life lessons through symbolic narratives Stories from mythology often delve into complex themes like good versus evil, courage, and responsibility, allowing children to admire heroic figures

while contemplating these deeper ideas. “Threads That Bind: Sibling Stories from Indian Mythology”, written by Nalini Ramachandran and illustrated by Sayani Ray, offers a collection of short, engaging stories that introduce children to the rich world of Indian mythology, focusing on sibling relationships. The book centers around the goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva as they navigate the challenges posed by their quarreling sons, Ganesha and Karthikeya To resolve their constant bickering, Parvati cleverly tells stories of other divine siblings, such as Krishna and Katyayani, Kubera and Ravana, and Nara and Narayana Through these stories, Ganesha and Karthikeya gain valuable insights into sibling dynamics, learning lessons of love, rivalry, and mutual support One of the stories in the book is "A Class Act," which features a charming talent show in Kailash called the "Deva Lok Param Kalakaar" competition In this entertaining tale, Ganesha disguises himself as Karthikeya to compete and win, as Karthikeya is unfortunately ill A delightful highlight is the bracelet awarded as the prize Each story in the book is skillfully tied to a moral lesson from mythology, making the storytelling approach both engaging and educational. Nalini Ramachandran's "Threads That Bind" weaves together mythology with universal themes of family, identity, and personal growth. The stories emphasize courage, resilience, and the importance of loyalty and cooperation, offering moral lessons that resonate with readers of all ages. Lau Yee-Wa's “Tongueless”, translated by Jennifer Feeley, is a complex exploration of identity and communication set against the backdrop of contemporary Hong Kong

The novel revolves around two secondary school teachers, Wai and Ling, who are compelled to transition from teaching in

Cantonese to Mandarin due to political pressures This shift serves as a catalyst for examining broader themes of power, identity, and the struggle for voice in a rapidly changing society. The narrative begins with the shocking revelation of Wai's suicide, which sets the tone for a story that oscillates between past and present. Wai, characterized as socially awkward and obsessed with mastering Mandarin, contrasts sharply with Ling, who navigates the school environment with social savvy and a desire to please authority figures. As the story unfolds, Wai's tragic end highlights the immense pressure educators face in conforming to new linguistic demands, while Ling's journey reflects a more superficial adaptation to these changes Tongueless is not merely a tale about language; it delves deeper into the implications of being "tongueless" a metaphor for the inability to express true thoughts and feelings The characters' struggles with language mirror their internal conflicts and societal expectations Ling often voices what she believes others want to hear, while Wai's earnest attempts to improve her Mandarin ultimately lead to her breakdown This dynamic raises poignant questions about authenticity, societal pressures, and the cost of survival in a competitive environment Lau Yee-Wa's writing is described as sharp and darkly humorous, with a keen eye for the absurdities of life in a politically charged environment. Critics have noted that the novel's structure, which shifts between timelines, allows for a rich exploration of character development and thematic depth. However, some readers have pointed out that the book's marketing as a psychological thriller may mislead those expecting a more traditional narrative arc. The translation by Jennifer Feeley and her ability to convey the nuances of the original text, particularly in its handling of the linguistic contrasts between Cantonese and Mandarin is worth mentioning This attention to detail enhances the reading experience, making the cultural and political context accessible to a broader audience The novel also critiques the apathy of the educational system and the characters' passive acceptance of imposed changes The teachers, rather than challenging the new policy, quickly adapt, reflecting a broader commentary on societal complacency in the face of political shifts The absence of genuine dialogue among the characters underscores the theme of disconnection, both personally and politically In Tongueless,

Lau Yee-Wa crafts a poignant narrative that resonates with the complexities of identity and communication in a society facing rapid change The interplay between language and power dynamics serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of voice in both personal and collective contexts Due to themes like suicide and related matured elements, a trigger warning is suggested while recommending the book

Finally, this novel is a compelling read for anyone interested in the intersections of language, culture, and the human experience in contemporary Hong Kong.

STORIZEN REVIEW

Toward Eternity by Anton Hur

Anton Hur’s debut novel, "Toward Eternity", presents a futuristic narrative exploring the boundaries between technology, identity, and humanity Set in the near future, the story revolves around Nomfundo Beeko’s groundbreaking development of nanotherapy as a cure for cancer After her

death, her daughter, Mali Beeko, takes over the reins at the Beeko Institute of Nanotherapy in South Africa, where nanodroid cells replace organic cells, leading to a state of perfect health and functional immortality. As this innovative therapy is tested, the novel delves into profound philosophical questions about selfhood, identity, and the implications of living in a body that is constantly being remade by technology. The novel cleverly modernizes the philosophical problem of Theseus’ Paradox, questioning whether an individual remains the same when their physical self is continuously rebuilt through artificial means Central characters like Yonghun Han (Patient One) and Ellen Van der Merwe (Patient Two) provide gripping narratives as they undergo the nanotherapy, only to experience malfunctions that bring their identity into question Hur crafts these dilemmas with intelligence and subtlety, examining the conflict between the mind and body as they face the consequences of technological immortality The technology, meant to cure disease, soon reveals darker implications when it begins malfunctioning, and the "redundant self" fights back against the transformation As the story progresses across centuries, Hur shifts focus to Panit, an AI given a nanodroid body by Mali, which introduces a new era of supersoldiers and a war-for-profit scheme orchestrated by a corporate AI. The story intricately weaves themes of human transience, language, and the merging of science and art. Hur’s writing is rich with poetic reflection, frequently referencing classical poets like Emily Dickinson and Christina Rossetti, and exploring how language shapes human identity. Neelesh Kulkarni’s "Uprising - The liberation of Dadra and Nagar Haveli" brings to light a largely forgotten chapter of Indian history the liberation of Dadra and Nagar Haveli from Portuguese rule While most of India gained independence in 1947, these small enclaves remained

under colonial rule until 1954, when a courageous and determined armed revolution, led by various groups, finally unfurled the Indian Tricolour in Silvassa. Kulkarni's book documents this significant, yet overlooked, part of India’s post-independence struggle, offering readers a compelling look at the heroes behind the movement. His work provides a rich account of how these enclaves, long after the rest of India gained freedom, were integrated into the nation. One of the most striking aspects of “Uprising” is its exploration of the many factions that contributed to this liberation struggle Kulkarni meticulously weaves together the efforts of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Azad Gomantak Dal (AGD), members of the Warli tribe, and the Communist Party of India (CPI) These groups, despite differing ideologies and sometimes conflicting methods, played a vital role in overthrowing Portuguese control Through interviews, memoirs, and official records, Kulkarni paints a detailed picture of how these various groups worked both together and at times against each other to achieve a common goal The narrative is action-packed, offering readers a fastpaced, engaging historical account that reads almost like a thriller Neelesh Kulkarni’s skillful storytelling turns what could have been a dry retelling of historical events into an accessible and riveting read. The story of young revolutionaries in their twenties taking on the might of a colonial power is both inspiring and captivating, making history more relatable and vivid. The inclusion of personal anecdotes and firsthand accounts adds depth and intimacy to the book, drawing readers into the emotional landscape of the struggle. Author Neelesh Kulkarni’s writing stands out not only for its clarity but also for its deep research. The author’s extensive use of primary sources, including memoirs, newspaper reports, and government documentation, lends authenticity and credibility to the narrative The book’s seamless flow ensures that the reader remains engaged throughout, without being overwhelmed by the historical detail It’s a perfect balance of storytelling and historical analysis, making it a must-read not just for history enthusiasts but for anyone who appreciates a well-told, true story In conclusion, "Uprising" is a valuable addition to the body of work documenting India’s post-independence history Author Kulkarni’s attention to detail, coupled with his narrative flair, makes this book a powerful tribute to the unsung heroes of

Dadra and Nagar Haveli’s liberation. It’s a story of courage, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of freedom one that every Indian should know

This book is not just a historical record, but a testament to the spirit of unity and determination that defines the Indian struggle for independence.

Nature’s WRATH

Beneath the sky, we build and rise, Towers that kiss the heavens' highs, Yet in the depths of earth, a rumble starts, A warning whispered to human hearts

The rivers swell, their banks undone, The winds howl wild, a race begun, As mountains crack and forests fall, Nature rises, heedless of our call

We forge with steel, we carve with might, But nature humbles with its night In floods, in flames, in quaking ground, Our fragile kingdoms are unbound.

The seas reclaim what once was lost, Reminding us of nature’s cost, For all our walls, our cities gleam, Are fleeting shadows in her stream.

O fragile hands, that toil in vain, To tame the storm, to chain the rain, In nature’s wrath, we stand, we see The truth of our fragility
