Amitava Kumar

In this illuminating conversation with Amitava Kumar, we delve into the creative genius behind The Green Book, a work that transcends traditional storytelling by seamlessly blending art and literature Kumar shares the philosophy of "seeing is, in fact, being," the evolution of his creative journey across the trilogy of colors, and the intricate balance of spontaneity and purpose in his observations. From vivid sketches that complement profound narratives to reflections on how art and literature serve as life’s compass, this interview unravels the threads of creativity, introspection, and the enduring legacy of an observer’s gaze.

In The Green Book, your illustrations play a central role in the storytelling process. What inspired you to intertwine art with writing so seamlessly, and how do you decide which moments are better expressed through sketches rather than words?

I didn’t think of the drawings or paintings as illustrations An illustration, as I understand the word, is an accompaniment It is something drawn or painted to illustrate what is more important the argument or the story, which is the main thing I draw or paint what I find visually interesting. There is no hierarchy that separates the visual from the verbal I think of them as autonomous forms, independent of each other And yet they are related, one can say something about the other, not in a plain sense but through the mechanics of juxtaposition

The book emphasizes the philosophy of “seeing is, in fact, being ” How has this approach shaped not just your art but also your personal worldview?

Yes, to see is to observe the world and your self inhabiting this world The idea of observation was central to my development as a writer I’d enter a room (I’m talking now of the time I was in my late teens) and take note of everything arrayed around me. Noticing! The look on the faces of people The hurt, the excitement, disappointment At a different level, the idea of being sensitive to what appears unsaid.

“I’m a novelist. I have also written nonfiction books. The idea of structuring a narrative, of managing or arranging voices, is a part of my job. It is the same work here.”

With The Green Book following The Blue Book and The Yellow Book, how has your creative journey evolved across these works? Is there a thematic connection among these colours that readers should note?

I learned more about painting I began with simple watercolours and by the time we come to the final volume of the trilogy I’m presenting you more complicated art, including works in oil The theme connecting them is that of being faithful to the idea of keeping a diary, to mark my passage through the world and the times we have lived in. Each volume has an emphasis on a particular colour, most markedly in The Green Book where I try to focus on nature and other aspects of the colour green.

The book has been described as a “quiet guide” that offers comfort and hope. What role do you believe art and literature play in helping people navigate a constantly changing world?

Art and literature are mechanisms that provide maps of our lived realities You are navigating what you call a constantly changing world: it is as if you are walking through a maze that is life but in your hand is a thread that has been unspooling all along You never let go of the thread because it tell you where you came from and where you are now This threat is art and literature

Born from countless walks, The Green Book by Amitava Kumar celebrates the art of noticing. Through sketches, paintings, and journal entries, Kumar captures the world’s fleeting moments, drawing inspiration from literary greats like Virginia Woolf and Mohandas Gandhi. In a warming world, creativity becomes our lifeline —offering solace, hope, and a way of imagining new futures. This third installment in the series reminds us that seeing is more than observing—it’s a way of being.

Your work often balances spontaneity with a sense of purpose. Can you share an instance where a spontaneous observation during your travels turned into a pivotal part of the book?

Your question is making me think Most of the observations are spontaneous observations. That is the nature of observations

I’m still thinking. For instance, I was in the London Underground and saw a man kill himself It was something I forced myself to observe I describe this scene in The Yellow Book. There wasn’t any time to think, really In that sense, the response I had was purely spontaneous But it underlined what is central to my work. The ethic of observation, of paying scrupulous attention, as the ethos of my being

Combining writing, painting, and sketching into one cohesive narrative is no small feat. What challenges have you faced in this multidimensional storytelling process, and how have you overcome them?

I’m a novelist. I have also written nonfiction books. The idea of structuring a narrative, of managing or arranging voices, is a part of my job It is the same work here. Thinking through questions of structure is a familiar task for me and it is the work I’ve long been training myself to do At the same time, let’s not forget what William Maxwell said: “After forty years, what I came to care about most was not style, but the breath of life ” I try to remember that, to let a sense of what is alive to overcome anything that is dictated by anything by a sense of structure or style

“Art and literature are mechanisms that provide maps of our lived realities. You are navigating what you call a constantly changing world: it is as if you are walking through a maze that is life but in your hand is a thread that has been unspooling all along.”

As an observer of life and the world, what message or legacy do you hope The Green Book leaves for its readers?

The book’s subtitle is “An Observer’s Notebook ” That is a pointer about the message I’m trying to convey. Seeing is being.

Love,

the Digital Way

nita walks inside the café with a throbbing heart. She looks around. The air is still, somewhat meditative Most of the tables are empty, except a few with occupants showing absorbed attention to their respective activities a young couple having toast and coffee, a teenybopper jammed onto her phone

At the farthest corner, a young man is working on his laptop, sipping his coffee occasionally, heedless of his surroundings Anita wonders whether he is the one, but he seems to be much younger than her fiancé, Sanjay He is an IT professional who has been working for quite some time in that field, probably in his thirties or at the most, early forties from what she could make out of his online AI avatar His image gathers in her mind from the bits and pieces of information that have trickled down gradually from him over their more-than six-month relationship in the digital realm, enlightening her twenty-year-old, university-attendee mind in their own good time

“What’s age got to do with love?” He often mentions whenever she poses any query regarding his age

Sanjay should have been here by now. Did he get the café’s name correctly?

He’ll be crossing three mountain ranges and three rivers to reach her a trip via plane from the southern to the northern part of the country.

#beingdelayed

She chafes at the idea of a long wait, takes on a table, and sits facing the transparent front door to keep an eye on whosoever is entering the place A waiter walks up to her, smiling genially

“I’m expecting someone ” She says, nodding her head, with a fast-beating heart, before the waiter speaks

Why on earth did they choose such a cloudy, windy January morning to fix a real-life meeting? How will they know? Isn’t love as unpredictable as the weather? In this vertiginous world, their love is perhaps the only constant

It all started when Sanjay and Anita met on the dating app, formulating algorithms that claimed a hundred-percent match of personal interests and life goals Both are introverts having similar taste buds along with specific Bollywood music

tastes;coffee, movie, and literature aficionados;and believers of happily-ever-after ideas.

Right from the start a sense of connection clicked, turning their friendship into romance. Their relationship spiraled from the dating site onto the visual-sharing network, Instagram, expressing their special love with hashtags They exchanged messages each day about everything, except their looks, age, and personal struggles, transcending their technological chemistry into an emotional one Two souls in each other’s virtual company after a long, harried day found solace in words of love Their back-and-forth, the conscious stretching of time, suddenly found to be spent at their own leisure, delaying their bedtime, comforted, as they basked in the privilege of their camaraderie

Anita was relieved when Sanjay expressed his fascination with loving the soul and not the physical appearance of an individual She is after all a plain Jane whom perhaps people wouldn’t give a second thought, let alone staring back a second time After meeting her, will his expectations be disappointed? Is Sanjay as handsome as his AI avatar? Is he like the frog who will become the handsome prince when she kisses him in real life?

#frogprince

While scrolling through his messages received earlier that day, she recalls the moment when Sanjay sent an opulence of Instagram posts exhibiting his love for her His AI avatar recognized with esteeming airs and gestures found appearing in light cotton clothes during summers, raincoats during the monsoons, Eskimo jackets during winters, but all truly, madly in love with her, adding digital footprints to reveal his deep feelings. She has always showered her love and kisses in essence, always wondering, or rather worrying, about their first meeting in the real world. In a private Instagram ceremony, their avatars exchanged rings, in the presence of virtual, unknown friends women came in palanquins and men on horseback.

#lovelife

“It’s time now We need to meet in person ” Sanjay sent a message a few days ago to which Anita agreed almost reluctantly There is nothing to worry about She thinksshe knows him inside out Does she know him really well? She had often read online about fraudsters who con innocent people, hiding behindthe unreachable masks of this online world

This sort of augmented world did exist in earlier times where husbands and wives never met in person Brides and bridegrooms of royal families sent messages through their pet pigeons similar to any messengers’ app and got their dolls married just like it happens on any online app Kings would send their musical instruments like veena to participate instead of them in marriage rituals Princess Sanjukta was in love with King Prithviraj without even meeting him Seeing his

statue at the court entrance, she garlanded it on the day she was supposed to choose her bridegroom from a hall full of royal suitors King Prithviraj emerged from nowhere and whisked her off to his kingdom Will Sanjay be her Prithviraj?

#Anita’sPrithviraj

What if all that Sanjay has told her about himself isn’t true? How will she deal with a fake relationship in the real world? What if her expectations are shattered? Are the virtual conversations enough to know a person? His otherworldly avatar, brimming with expressions of sensitivities, may be the upshot of nothing but a wellthought-out computerized simulation

Will the rendezvous be flavorful like filter coffee or overly bitter like tea brewed for too long?

#reallifemeeting

“There seem to be chains about my feet,” Anita mumbles under her breath, in the voice of reason that she keeps for herself.

With her thoughts, it’s like squeezing through prickly bushes. Before she can pull them free in one place, they get trapped in another.

His cuddly words have always generated a feeling of love in her but never unified the lovers Of late, her life has been nothing but a plodding serial drama Perhaps he has remained this distant, digital foreigner who hasn’t been able to traverse the infinite abyss between their virtual worlds That gap has weighed down her soul She wishes to be free but is stuck, akin to a gas balloon tied onto the ground like a prisoner who only has the independence to sway with the wind but never soar in the sky

A sudden hubbub of some argument going on in the room breaks into her thoughts Releasing her mobile phone momentarily, she leans back, her eyes their widest, and observes the young couple closely Newlyweds The woman is wearing red bangles that one wears for an entire year after marriage

Anita doesn’t wish to express avid curiosity and learn something she isn’t supposed to listen

“Who is this woman constantly sending messages? Who the hell is she?”

“She’s just a virtual friend ”

“I don’t believe you.”

“I’m sick and tired of your suspicion.”

“Yes, you’ll say so now. After all, the grapes that hang higher up are always sweet.”

Abruptly, the man gets up and barges out of the café, leaving the woman in tears

Anita senses beads of perspiration rolling down her forehead A moment earlier her mind was buzzing with thoughts Now, it’s unexpectedly empty, desolate like a haunted house, with all the windows and doors tightly shut She tries to make an effort to rise to her feet to console the weeping lady, but then stops on her way, as her feet are numb and tingling

Sitting like a woman under a spell, Anita momentarily gapes at the lady who has got up from her seat while resorting to sobbing brokenly, attempting to make a move. Outside the door, she notices a big dog with a lolling tongue watching them with the attention of a match referee.

A notification on her phone commands her back to her own world.

It’s from Sanjay.

“Poor visibility and rough weather Flight canceled ”

“No problem ” Anita finds her fingers hurriedly typing out busy and intent

“Don’t know when I’ll be able to meet you Work pressure, you see ”

Anita sends a smiling emoji

“Meanwhile, let’s get married online Yes, I’m proposing to you ”

“Yes!”

#onlinewedding

Trembling all over, Anita gazes outside the transparent door It has started raining She feels as if the pregnant clouds earlier held powerless, hemmed defencelessly in with the threat of non-precipitative expectations have at last released their burden of rain

Seema's day began with the familiar symphony of sleepless nights, crying twins, the sticky chaos of diaper changes, and the frantic scramble to get breakfast on the table. Motherhood had put her career on hold, a temporary pause that felt like an eternity.

Meanwhile, Rohan, her husband, once her rock, seemed distant, lost in the demands of work and the overwhelming changes at home He'd come home late and collapse on the bed, muttering, "Long day " It felt like she was raising three children, not two

It's been eight months since they had Twins, and life has become a whirlpool, leaving no time for each other Whatever little time they had, they discussed kids, chores, and bills, ending in disagreements All this was drifting them apart and leaving Seema desperately lonely and frustrated

One such day, she came across a digital chatting app called No Strings Attached, where she could vent her heart to strangers without being judged She impulsively downloaded the app and created a TiredMOM profile but didn't use it

It became a digital ghost until the day the chaos reached a fever pitch, and she desperately needed an outlet With a weary thumb, she opened the app and logged in Her fingers flew across the keyboard, typing a question that had been burning in her mind: "What's it REALLY like being a parent?"

Almost instantly, a reply appeared, and the username CRUSHED was glowing on the screen. "It's like being a zookeeper…" CRUSHED typed, a laughing emoji appearing through the words, " … except the animals are smaller, louder, and demand snacks every five minutes."

Seema burst into loud laughter. "Finally, someone understood," she murmured. An instant spark ignited between the two, and they messaged back and forth, sharing the joys and frustrations of parenthood Their words were a comforting balm on the raw edges of their days Gradually, their friendship moved to sharing their personal lives, where they discussed their respective spouses being indifferent since they had kids

One particularly grueling evening, Seema felt lonely after wrestling the toddlers into bed Rohan had gone out for an official dinner Pouring her heart to CRUSHED, she typed, "It's like he doesn't even see me anymore We're like ships passing at night, living parallel lives in the same house "

"I understand," CRUSHED responded. Then, after a short pause, he writes back, "Have you tried… you know… a date night? After the little ones are asleep….Hmmm…maybe… Light some candles, play music, and pretend you're in your 20s again."

"Sounds nice," she typed, "But it feels impossible with kids "

"Nothing's impossible," CRUSHED replied "Just takes a little planning Besides, you deserve it "

Have you tried this with your spouse? She responded quickly

"Nope my one is always in a swollen mood nagging me for small things " As he typed the words, a frown creased his brow as he recalled the morning's argument

"Poor thing She must be exhausted and frustrated " Write back, TiredMOM "I'm sailing in the same boat so I can understand her bickering Huh Why don't you take some load off with daily chores and give her some rest ?"

Her words resonated with him He could picture his wife's tired frame working relentlessly with the Twins "Hmmm yeah maybe you are right I miss how my wife and I used to be," he confessed "We'd spend hours just sharing our thoughts and dreams Now, it's just logistics 'Did you get diapers?' 'Who's doing the laundry?' It's killing me." He typed and sighed as he remembered their laughter and the companionship that had once defined their relationship.

"Me too," typed back TiredMOM. "I wish we could find our way back to that."

It was Sunday morning.

Seema woke with a start, glancing at the clock. "Oh, shit! It's 9:00 a.m.!" she exclaimed, leaping out of bed. She rushed into the living room and stopped short, a look of surprise washing over her face The twins were happily sitting with Rohan, munching on cereal and eggs Rohan had cooked breakfast! Though the kitchen was a mess, a warm smile spread across her face

"Oh It's been ages since you cooked me breakfast," she said, her voice soft and appreciative She leaned in and gave him a quick peck on the cheek, which caught him by surprise

The whole day felt like a fresh breeze to both of them

A few days later, Seema followed CRUSHED advice after the kids were finally asleep at night She lit some candles, played soft music, and poured two glasses of wine

When Rohan walked into the living room, he was taken aback "What's all this?" he asked, a confused look on his face

"A date," she said, smiling "Remember those?" She picked up one of the wine glasses and held it to him He took the glass, his fingers brushing hers for a moment They spent the evening talking about them other than work and the kids They laughed, shared memories, and reconnected in a way they hadn't in a long time It felt like they were rediscovering each other,

the spark between them reigniting with each shared glance and quiet laugh

"Oh, it was magical," typed Seema and sent a thanks emoji to CRUSHED

"Your suggestions, too, worked " writes CRUSHED, "I saw her smiling after a long time " They laughed and shared stories that lightened their moods as the conversation flowed.

A few days later, Rohan placed a hastily scribbled note on a kitchen counter: "Thinking of you." That evening, Seema took extra care with her appearance. She put on a dress Rohan liked and cooked his favorite curry. While the children's demands made a truly peaceful dinner impossible, her efforts didn't go unnoticed Rohan watched her with appreciative eyes

The following morning, Seema walked into the kitchen and stopped dead "Oh!" she gasped as she saw a beautiful bouquet of lilies carefully placed in the vase on her Kitchen Counter "Surprise," he mumbled "These are beautiful," Seema said, burying her nose in the fragrant blooms and turning to give him a quick kiss on the cheek

The next day, both Seema and CRUSHED logged onto the chat app

"The flowers were a hit," CRUSHED typed "Thanks for the advice " He recalled what TiredMOM had written to her about his wife: "Maybe she just needs a little appreciation A small gesture, flowers, or even just taking something off her plate can make a huge difference " He had mentally noted the advice and followed it

"You're welcome," Seema replied "I'm glad it worked I tried a movie date this time and it came out nice We are learning to spend time with each other with the Twins tagging in our arms." She typed in a laughter emoji to represent her feelings.

"Awesome," CRUSHED typed, though he felt strange as the TiredMOM date sounded very similar to the night he had with Seema

TiredMOM typed "You know, you remind me a lot of my husband "

"Oh really? How so?" his fingers fumbling on the keyboard,

She replied, "You both have the same terrible sense of humor, and you both seem to need reminding about simple things, like buying flowers for your wife! And you both seem to think a quick grunt constitutes a meaningful conversation!"

At this point, Rohan burst out laughing, dropping his phone on the sofa Hearing the noise from the other room, Seema came in to see what was happening She picked up his phone and read the chat log. Her eyes widened in disbelief. She scrolled back, seeing his earlier messages about his "nagging" wife. A slow smile spread across her face. She has been suspecting this. "So, it's you…" she said, her voice laced with amusement, "Mr. CRUSHED …...and thinks his wife is a nag?"

Rohan, still chuckling, held his hands up in mock surrender "Guilty " He then admitted that he'd downloaded the app out of sheer frustration, desperate to vent about work and family pressures

"But in my defense," he added, reaching for her hand, "you were right I needed a reminder And your advice was spot on both sets of it "

Seema playfully swatted his arm. "So, you were complaining about me to… me?"

"It sounds ridiculous when you put it like that," Rohan admitted, pulling her close. "But honestly, talking to TiredMOM… helped me see things differently. I realized how much I missed talking to you."

Seema leaned into him, a warmth spreading through her that she hadn't felt in a long time "Me too," she whispered

Just then, the house was filled with the twins' wails They looked at each other and burst out laughing, the tension of the past eight months melting away They knew life wouldn't be the same with the children, but they were learning to find a balance together

It was a bizarre scenario: At the ChatApp no strings attached they tied the loose end of their relationship strings to make their bond even more substantial for this new phase of their lives

IS DIGITAL ROMANCE WORTH?

igital romance is escalating these days. Teenagers as well as adults are more into social media. People meet strangers on Whatsapp or Facebook. Time was when people used to fall in love while meeting a person. Nowadays, there is no need to meet people for falling in love. You send a friend request to a stranger on social media and then knowing each other starts

Through messages on social media, it has become easier to fall in love To know a person in a better way, you invite your person to share video calls or voice messages If you are away from each other, love still exists through video calls No matter how far you are from your loved one, you have video messages to share

Within a tap, you can talk and see your loved ones over video messages You have no time to meet, you know you can meet him or her through video calls You have forgotten to wish for your anniversary No worries Wish your loved one Happy Anniversary on the voice call You have come to attend a conference and you do not want to skip your dear one's birthday Why worry when video calls are there for your service It is impossible to start a day without Whatsapp Wish Happy Birthday to your dear one and cut a yummy cake on your loved one's behalf over video calls on Whatsapp

Is digital love a boon? Yes To an extent, it is To make up for something, you rely on digital messages Counting too much on the digital world is not good. It is necessary to meet your dear one in person. Digital love is transient. It gives you happiness for a short while. The happiness you feel after meeting a person is out of this world. Conversing your loved one face to face makes you feel close to your person. No matter how long the conversation is over the phone calls or over video messages, it cannot appease you the way you get satisfaction from having a one-onone conversation.

Expressing your love via chats sounds technical, isn't it? It is a different feeling altogether when you hear romantic sentences from your loved one You feel even more special when you receive a bouquet of roses from your loved one Getting bouquets of roses on social media does not make you feel special Although digital romance is on a rage in the present times, it cannot complement real romance Sharing your feelings over texts or talking about your feelings over phone calls is nothing wrong One should not make a habit of digital romance Let your feelings be expressed in front of your beloved Make time to meet the someone you are madly in love with

Depending too much on digital romance will cripple your love. Let your love make your loved one realize how much you mean to him and her. Spending time over chats for hours will not help grow your relationship. Instead, spend time with your loved one by meeting him or her directly.

INTERVIEW

Swami Mukundananda
Author: Nourish Your Soul

ourish Your Soul delves into the transformative lives of eleven saints, offering timeless wisdom and practical steps for spiritual growth In this interview, we explore their teachings on self-awareness, resilience, and unwavering faith, uncovering how their journeys inspire us to deepen our connection with the divine and lead a life of purpose and devotion

Nourish Your Soul encourages introspection and growth. What are some practical steps readers can take to foster self-awareness and deepen their spiritual journey?

Self-awareness is one of the fundamental starting points on one’s spiritual journey of inner transformation It is about understanding our true identity the real “I”, beyond the material body and mind As parts of the Divine, we too are divine in nature Realizing this helps us develop correct values and beliefs This empowers our higher self to control our lower nature

Introspection is an excellent way to cultivate selfawareness. It allows us to turn inward and honestly evaluate our thoughts and emotions, revealing our strengths and shortcomings. We become aware of where we are and where we wish to be in our thinking and personality.

Such self-assessment often leads us to contemplate questions such as ‘Who am I?’ ‘What is the purpose of my life?’ ‘What is true happiness?’ ‘How can I improve myself?’ etc. These questions make us aware of our life’s purpose and help us establish beneficial beliefs

As we grow in self-awareness, we learn to distinguish between our lower tendencies, such as ego and selfcenteredness, and our higher qualities of compassion and love Such self-reflection helps us make sense of our emotions what motivates us, and what trips us Once we become mindful of our emotions, we can then take responsibility for them For example, “If I am feeling upset, I have not learned to control my mind ” Such awareness leads to the true evolution of the soul

The book highlights saints from different traditions, such as Soordas, Tukaram, and Andal. What do you believe is the universal thread that connects these diverse paths to spirituality?

Nourish Your Soul presents saints from different Indian traditions and historical epochs They presented the Truth as per the socio-cultural circumstances predominant in the age in which they appeared For example, Adi Shankaracharya

preached the principles of Advaita Vedanta, while the saints in the Bhakti Movement, like Meerabai, Soordas, and Andal, focused on the personal experience of God

The universal goal of the saints remained the Absolute Truth They all broke down barriers of caste, creed, and rituals and propelled souls towards the Supreme based on eternal principles Despite belonging to different traditions and social milieus, these saints maintained one-pointed devotion, unwavering faith, and unconditional, selfless love for the Supreme They expressed their divine sentiments through kirtans, compositions, and devotional literature, which continue to guide us in our spiritual quest, inspiring us to seek the Divine within

The book emphasizes the human struggles faced by saints, such as financial troubles and health issues How can their ability to transform adversity into spiritual awakening guide individuals in today’s world?

The worldly struggles of saints were no less than the ones most people face However, through every difficulty, theyremained undeterred and true to their divine purpose. Thiswas because they viewed these adversities as opportunities for spiritual growth and awakening.

We, too, can take inspiration from the saints and learn the art of handling challenges. For that, we simply need to make a little change in the way we look at things. From our perspective, pain is a bad thing, while pleasure is most desirable. Contrarily, the Vedas guide us to make selfgrowth our goal and not the maximization of pleasure. That is precisely what the saints did They harbored the perspective of self-improvement, which empowered them to effortlessly overcome problems Instead of blaming difficulties that would befall them, they reframed them as blessings to grow in virtues such as tolerance, compassion, and selflessness In this way, they transformed adversity by looking at the ‘silver lining,’ regarding hardships as a catalyst to become a better version of themselves Similarly, viewing challenges from a higher perspective can help us align ourselves with spiritual precepts and become more resilient

Furthermore, the saints harbored immense faith in God’s plan They trusted that God is everyone’s perfect wellwisher and companion of the soul They realized God’s benevolence and protection towards all, especially the surrendered souls Even a worldly father cares and provides for his children God, our eternal Father, does the same on a cosmic scale He sustains every living being in creation If we can simply have faith in God’s love and care for us, we will readily be able to drop anxieties and take advantage of difficult situations for internal growth

Even a brief encounter with Saints can lead seekers to spiritual perfection, and the sacred land of Bharat has been blessed by many revered Sages. While we cannot turn back time to meet them, we can immerse ourselves in their lives through Nourish Your Soul: Inspirations from and Lives of Great Saints, a heartfelt tribute to eleven extraordinary Saints who embodied the eternal truths of the scriptures. Their journeys, filled with challenges like financial struggles, health issues, and strained relationships, reveal how steadfast faith and devotion can turn adversity into inspiration. This unique compilation of wisdom and teachings is a timeless guide, offering spiritual insight and inspiration for generations to come.

In exploring the lives of these saints, did you discover any parallels with your own spiritual journey? If so, how has it deepened your connection with the divine?

The biggest parallel is the call for God that people experience in their lives It is such a profound call that it cannot be ignored The saints responded to it by dedicating their lives in loving service to their Lord

The inspiration and takeaway for me is the expanse of love that they possessed for God and their complete and absolute commitment to the purpose that He had chosen for them

The saints you’ve portrayed embodied unwavering faith and devotion How can readers cultivate such trust in the divine amidst their own challenges?

These Saints were undoubtedly embodiments of unwavering faith and devotion They exhibited the virtue of equanimity and resolute trusteven amidst the most terrible situations. How were they able to do it? They perceived the grace of God in reversals. They firmly believed that the ultimate purpose of life was the elevation of the soul. So, challenging conditions became an opportunity for spiritual growth. It was with this thought that Kunti Devi, mother of the five Pandava brothers, requested hardships from Shree Krishna. The Shreemad Bhagavatam states:

vipadaḥsantunaḥśhaśhvatatratatrajagad-guro(1.8.25)

‘O Jagadguru Shree Krishna! Please continue to send calamities in my life ’ Mother Kunti showed no preference for material comforts She realized every time she faced a calamity, her detachment from the world accelerated, and she felt closer to God internally Sant Tukaram illustrated the same when he thanked God for giving him a nagging wife, which would ensure that he never got enmeshed in worldly attachments

Similarly, we can perceive disappointments as eyeopeners and blessings sent by God, who teaches us wisdom through adversities Through them, we comprehend the futility of material pursuits and realize that the world is a place of misery and suffering This understanding turns us towards God and real wealth, which is divine love, the treasure of the soul

What key message or insight do you hope readers take away from this book?

There are many key morals and learnings throughout the book The wisdom leads the reader towards spiritual fulfillment and perfection

The saints’ key message was to establish one’s personal connection with divinity and grow in love for God They, themselves, were drenched in divine consciousness and inspired the awakening of the same profuse devotion and wisdom in the hearts of others

Their life stories are replete with inspirations for practicing virtue, goodness, and divine love Delving into the lives of these remarkable saints will encourage readers to kindle love for the Supreme in their hearts; it will give them a strong sense of purpose; and impart spiritual guidance for generations to come

For those just beginning their spiritual journey, where would you suggest they start, and how can they use the teachings in this book as a guide?

Beginners in the spiritual journey can start by resorting to the scriptures, which are sacrosanct sources of spiritual knowledge The Bhagavad Gita nicely encapsulates the knowledge of the Vedas, hence, is a good starting point The Shreemad Bhagavat Mahapuran takes us deeper into spiritual principles and devotion. The Mahabharat and Ramayan are, of course, timeless epics that one can study to enrich and illumine their intellect with divine wisdom. The Narad Bhakti Darshan is an excellent scripture for learning the science of bhakti.

Nourish Your Soul takes readers into the lives of eleven God-intoxicated saints who blessed the land of Bharat. We can derive inspiration from their unique life stories that are imbued with lessons for spiritual awakening and fulfillment These saints are our spiritual role models from whom we can learn about the purpose of our lives, virtuous conduct, selfless devotion, and inner transformation They veritably lived the principles enunciated in our scriptures and hence, can teach us by example

Karan Madhok's debut novel, "A Beautiful Decay", begins with a harrowing act of gun violence that sets the tone for an emotionally charged narrative The protagonist, Vishnu Agarwal, is a twentyone-year-old Indian immigrant in America whose life ends abruptly in a hate crime. From this grim starting point, Madhok weaves a story that explores themes of identity, trauma, and memory through Vishnu's retrospective journey, allowing readers to witness his reflections on a life shaped by privilege, displacement, and societal violence One of the novel's central themes is the complexity of identity and belonging, particularly within the immigrant experience Vishnu's journey reveals the dual challenges of reconciling his privileged background in India with his marginalized existence in America Madhok masterfully portrays the psychological toll of navigating two cultures while facing systemic prejudice and alienation This struggle extends to broader societal critiques, such as the persistent hate and violence in both American and Indian contexts, challenging readers to confront uncomfortable truths about cultural and societal dynamics. Karan Madhok employs a unique narrative device as Vishnu "binge-watches" his life after death, exploring how memory shapes identity and reality. This retrospective lens adds depth to the story, allowing for critical examinations of privilege and class. Vishnu's reflections on his father's oppressive actions in India contrast sharply with his vulnerability in America, creating a poignant commentary on how privilege operates differently across cultural landscapes Supporting characters, such as Sanjeet and Kareem, further illustrate the nuanced intersections of class, opportunity, and struggle "A Beautiful Decay" transcends its narrative of personal tragedy to offer a compelling critique of societal structures From caste-heteropatriarchy to systemic inequality and the normalization of bigotry, Madhok lays bare the underpinnings of violence and discrimination in contemporary society The novel’s raw, poetic prose evokes empathy while prompting introspection, making it an unforgettable exploration of the human condition

As a debut, it firmly establishes Karan Madhok as a voice to watch in modern literature

Karan Madhok's recent book "Ananda: The Exploration of Cannabis in India" offers an enlightening and thought-provoking exploration of cannabis’s history, cultural significance, and potential in India For readers like me, whose knowledge of cannabis was limited to its recreational use or cultural stereotypes like the iconic 'Manali Trance', this book is a revelation Madhok’s narrative not only traces cannabis’s ancient roots in Indian civilization but also demystifies its many uses beyond recreation, opening up a new perspective on a plant often shrouded in stigma. The author skillfully unpacks the various forms of cannabis hemp, charas, ganja, and bhang and their roles in India’s cultural and spiritual tapestry. Particularly striking are the discussions on cannabis’s environmental and medical applications. Madhok highlights its potential to create sustainable products like eco-friendly textiles and its emerging role in pain management and therapeutic treatments By balancing botanical details, historical anecdotes, and contemporary scientific research, the book paints a comprehensive picture of a plant often misunderstood or reduced to its recreational associations One of the book’s most significant contributions is its advocacy for informed cannabis policies in India Madhok underscores the need to move beyond stigma and misinformation, presenting evidence and arguments for reforming cannabis laws Whether visiting clinics where cannabis-based therapeutics are utilized or examining the challenges faced by communities dependent on its cultivation, the narrative calls for a shift in societal and governmental attitudes It is a compelling argument for decriminalizing cannabis and embracing its potential as an economic, environmental, and medical asset. What makes "Ananda" especially engaging is Madhok’s vibrant writing style, blending well-researched facts with personal anecdotes and cultural insights. From seeking the mythical Idukki Gold in Kerala to exploring the famed Malana Cream in Himachal Pradesh, Madhok’s on-the-ground experiences bring the story to life. He delves into the spiritual rituals involving bhang, the shadowy networks of suppliers, and the everyday lives of those who use or depend on cannabis

Through this lively and nuanced account, "Ananda" challenges preconceptions and inspires informed discussions about cannabis’s place in India’s past, present, and future.

"Framed: Astonishing True Stories of Wrongful Convictions" by John Grisham and Jim McCloskey takes a hard look at the heartbreaking reality of wrongful convictions in the American justice system. Through ten powerful and true stories, the authors reveal the devastating consequences of flawed

legal processes Grisham, known for his legal thrillers, teams up with McCloskey, the founder of Centurion Ministries, which is dedicated to exonerating the wrongfully convicted Together, they present an eye-opening account of the systemic issues that perpetuate these injustices, blending Grisham's gripping storytelling with McCloskey's firsthand insights from his work with exonerated individuals. The book is structured around ten case studies, each detailing the emotional and social toll of wrongful convictions. Grisham brings his narrative expertise to the table, creating compelling and vivid accounts of these tragic events. McCloskey, with his extensive experience, provides an insider’s view of the investigation process and the often convoluted legal challenges that led to these miscarriages of justice The cases are deeply personal, humanizing the victims of wrongful convictions while also shedding light on the corruption, racial bias, and unreliable evidence that contribute to these injustices The book makes a compelling case that many wrongful convictions are not the result of accidents, but rather systemic misconduct within law enforcement and the judicial system One of the key themes in "Framed" is the deep-rooted corruption and flaws within the justice system The authors highlight how law enforcement and prosecutors sometimes go to great lengths to secure convictions, even at the cost of truth They also explore the impact of racial bias, with many cases disproportionately affecting marginalized communities The use of unreliable forensic science and coerced confessions are also identified as contributing factors to wrongful convictions, making the book a powerful call for legal reform. By focusing on these issues, the authors not only tell gripping, emotional stories but also advocate for a more accountable and transparent legal system. "Framed" has received positive reviews for its compelling narrative and critical insights into the justice system. Inside the book, readers can observe Grisham's engaging storytelling format, while McCloskey’s factual, documentary-style approach adds depth and authenticity to the book Though the book is deeply emotional, it also serves as a sobering examination of the flaws in the American legal system Through its powerful storytelling and examination of systemic problems, "Framed" is a must-read for anyone interested in criminal justice reform, as it challenges readers to rethink their perceptions of justice and accountability.

"Genesis: Artificial Intelligence, Hope, and the Human Spirit" is a remarkable collaboration between statesman Henry Kissinger and technology experts Eric Schmidt and Craig Mundie This thoughtprovoking book examines the promises and challenges of artificial intelligence (AI) and its profound implications for human identity,

governance, and morality The authors weave a compelling narrative that situates AI as a pivotal force in the ongoing story of human progress, urging readers to confront its transformative potential and the ethical dilemmas it presents The authors explore how AI could revolutionize fields like climate change mitigation, scientific discovery, and inequality reduction while warning of its risks, such as deepening inequities and eroding free will. Drawing parallels to historical challenges like the nuclear age, they underline the importance of learning from the past to navigate AI’s complexities with foresight and caution. Delving beyond the technical, "Genesis" raises profound philosophical questions about the nature of intelligence and human evolution Should AI mirror human cognition, or should we adapt to coexist with it? These reflections invite readers to consider the far-reaching implications of AI on humanity’s understanding of itself and its place in the world, adding a contemplative richness to the discourse Grounded in practical urgency, the book highlights the need for global governance and shared standards to ensure AI serves humanity’s best interests It stresses the dangers of complacency, particularly under regimes that might misuse AI’s capabilities With Kissinger’s historical insights and Schmidt and Mundie’s technological expertise, "Genesis" offers a nuanced framework for addressing the ethical and geopolitical challenges of AI

Ultimately, this book is both a cautionary guide and a hopeful vision, urging humanity to embrace reason and conscience in shaping a future where AI complements the human spirit.

Hind Swaraj by M.K.Gandhi

"Hind Swaraj" is one of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi's most influential works, written in November 1909 during his journey from England to South Africa Banned by the British in 1910, the book serves as a passionate appeal for Indians to break free from the chains of imperialism. Gandhi encourages readers

to take pride in India's rich cultural and civilizational heritage. Using Satyagraha as a central theme, the book highlights his philosophy of non-violent resistance, the importance of freedom, and the value of interdependence as essential elements for achieving true Swaraj The book is written as a conversation between two characters, a reader and an editor, where Gandhi challenges modern civilization and suggests an alternative path Instead of focusing on one event like his eviction at Pietermaritzburg, this book shows how Gandhi’s ideas grew over time through reflection and experience Published by Penguin in 2024, with an introduction by Dhananjay Rai who teaches at the Department of Gandhian Thought and Peace Studies, Central University of Gujarat is a must-read even now The book covers three main areas First, Gandhi examines the political state of India and compares it with other countries like Italy, explaining why violent revolutions are not suitable for India. Next, he looks at the social problems of the time, connecting them to his later works like 'My Experiments with Truth'. Finally, he explores moral and spiritual ideas, focusing on non-violence and the strength of inner discipline. Gandhi also admits in the preface that his ideas are not perfect, showing his humility and willingness to learn. Throughout the book’s chapters, Gandhi questions the idea of progress tied to modern technology and conveniences, even criticizing railways as harmful While some of his views may feel outdated today, his strong belief in non-violence and simple living remains inspiring He stresses that true change comes from within and rejects the use of force to achieve goals, making this book an important guide for ethical leadership Gandhi's homage to Indian culture and ideals lies at the heart of "Hind Swaraj" Despite acknowledging society's shortcomings, he thinks it can develop and get better His appeal for independence, moral responsibility, and interpersonal harmony is still pertinent today

Anyone interested in comprehending Gandhi's philosophy and vision for India should read this book, which serves as a timeless reminder of his wisdom.

Journalist Meenakshi Ahamed's "Indian Genius: The Meteoric Rise of Indians in America" delves into the outstanding achievements made by Indian Americans in technology, medicine, and public politics. Ahamed demonstrates the blend of ambition, tenacity, and cultural values that have propelled Indian Americans into

powerful roles through interviews and portraits of notable figures such as Satya Nadella, Vinod Khosla, Chandrika Tandon, and Nikki Haley The book illustrates the spirit of a community that overcame obstacles, seized chances, and influenced mainstream American culture Author Ahamed inside the book delves into the unique factors behind the meteoric success of Indian Americans, whose achievements span a single generation She highlights their high levels of education, entrepreneurial spirit, and determination to break barriers The book also underscores the broader societal context, including challenges such as bigotry and racism, which these individuals navigated with determination Through the personal stories of leaders like Atul Gawande and Fareed Zakaria, the book reveals how cultural roots and personal ambition have converged to produce exceptional outcomes. While "Indian Genius" shines a light on inspiring stories, it has limitations. Ahamed focuses primarily on high-profile successes, leading to a portrayal that some may find overly selective. Critics might argue that the book largely overlooks the struggles or failures within the community, potentially reinforcing the model minority myth. Despite these shortcomings, the narratives of perseverance and innovation provide a compelling account of how Indian Americans have achieved success while adapting to and shaping their adopted homeland For readers seeking insights into the dynamics of cultural integration and immigrant success, "Indian Genius" offers an engaging and thought-provoking read Ahamed's interviews capture the diverse journeys of Indian Americans, reflecting not just their accomplishments but also the values that have driven them While the book may not fully encapsulate the complexity of the Indian American experience, it is a significant contribution to understanding how determination and adaptability have defined their remarkable trajectory in the United States Similar to the physical aesthetics of the book, the contents are unique and interesting

Boris Johnson's "Unleashed" presents itself as a memoir and manifesto, shedding light on his political journey from Mayor of London to Prime Minister The book offers a reflective, often self-aware narrative that highlights Johnson's achievements and missteps,

particularly during his time as mayor. It reveals how his relatively successful tenure at City Hall became the springboard to a higher office for which he was arguably illsuited. Johnson's account inadvertently champions the value and complexity of the mayoralty, underscoring its unique challenges and opportunities. The memoir dedicates a substantial portion to Johnson’s tenure as Mayor of London, with ten out of sixty chapters detailing this phase of his career From managing knife crime to improving London's cycling infrastructure, the book emphasizes the tangible impact a mayor can have on a city Johnson candidly admits to early stumbles, including a lack of a cohesive team, but reflects on how he grew into the role, eventually winning reelection in 2012 While some of his initiatives, such as the New Routemaster buses, are dismissed as "vanity projects," others, like the successful delivery of the 2012 Olympics, showcase lasting contributions to London’s development Despite its merits, the book is far from comprehensive Johnson’s writing style often marked by humor and casual remarks lacks the depth one might expect from a political memoir For readers critical of his tenure as Prime Minister or his role in Brexit, the book may further stoke frustrations with its sparse treatment of these events. Johnson seems more at ease revisiting his mayoralty than addressing his controversial premiership. This selective focus highlights his acknowledgment of the significant differences between leading a city and a country, a disparity he admits to underestimating. Ultimately, "Unleashed" is as much a cautionary tale as it is a retrospective. Johnson’s reflection on his time as Mayor of London reveals a leader who thrived in a role that allowed for decisive action without the constant scrutiny of parliamentary colleagues However, his ambition to climb higher ultimately exposed the limitations of his style of governance

For readers interested in the intricacies of London’s mayoralty and its influence on national politics, this memoir offers an engaging, albeit uneven, perspective.

Lt Gen Y K Joshi’s memoir - "Who Dares Wins: A Soldier’s Memoir" is a profound and inspiring narrative of a life dedicated to the service of the nation Born into a disciplined Brahmin family and raised in the unique environment of Army cantonments, Joshi’s early years were steeped in the values of duty, bravery, and

camaraderie. From witnessing the fervor of the 1971 IndiaPakistan War to deciding to don the uniform himself, his story captures the making of a soldier whose journey was shaped by formative experiences and influential mentors This compelling backdrop sets the stage for a memoir that delves deeply into the character and convictions of a military leader The heart of this book lies in his vivid recollections of military life, particularly the camaraderie, leadership, and sacrifices that define it His detailed retelling of pivotal moments, such as his role in the Kargil conflict, reflects the burdens of command and the emotional complexities of combat The memoir balances the intensity of battlefield decisions with heartfelt tributes to mentors, comrades, and family These elements resonate with universal themes of resilience, honor, and the unyielding spirit of service, offering readers a poignant glimpse into the life of a soldier committed to his duty. Lt Gen. Y.K. Joshi’s experiences at the National Defence Academy (NDA) form a significant portion of the memoir, highlighting the transformative power of military training. From initial anxieties to the grueling routines of the barracks, the narrative captures the journey from a wide-eyed recruit to a disciplined cadet. The bonds forged during this period are brought to life through anecdotes of camaraderie, shared challenges, and moments of triumph, such as the Drill Square Test These experiences not only prepared Joshi for the rigors of military life but also instilled values of perseverance and teamwork that would guide him throughout his career The memoir also sheds light on the advanced training and early postings that shaped Joshi’s evolution as a leader From rigorous exercises to the demands of operating in insurgency-affected areas, his story showcases the adaptability and resilience required in military life Lt Gen Y K Joshi’s memoir is not merely a chronicle of military life but a deeply personal reflection on service, sacrifice, and the pursuit of excellence With its blend of personal anecdotes, historical insights, and emotional depth, the book stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment of those who dedicate their lives to the nation For readers seeking an authentic and inspiring account of military service, Joshi’s memoir offers a window into the trials and triumphs of a soldier’s journey, leaving an indelible impression of respect and admiration.

Will India Get Rich Before It Turns 100?

India is on a path of change and opportunity that will lead to 2047 By adopting comprehensive reforms, encouraging inclusive growth, and utilizing its demographic and economic potential, India can achieve its goal of becoming a developed, prosperous country that proudly

and progressively marks its 100th anniversary of independence Prosenjit Datta's "WILL INDIA GET RICH BEFORE IT TURNS 100?" delves at India's lofty economic goals and the complex forces shaping its growth trajectory. The book dives into India's objective of creating a $5 trillion GDP, exploring the influence of watershed moments including demonetization, GST changes, and the Covid-19 pandemic. Datta uses a historical lens to highlight the limitations of economic forecasting, emphasizing how external crises and internal policy shifts have changed expectations With India currently having a nominal GDP of $3 7 trillion, the author assesses the viability of meeting the aim by 2028, providing a balanced assessment of ambition tempered by uncertainty While economic growth is a focal point, Datta argues that GDP alone does not define a nation's development He points to glaring disparities in living standards and per capita income, even as India ranks as the world’s fifth-largest economy The book examines broader measures of progress, such as the Human Development Index (HDI), which incorporates health, education, and income By presenting diverse perspectives, Datta challenges readers to rethink what it means for India to be truly “developed” and underscores the importance of addressing systemic issues like job creation and education to achieve holistic progress. In the book, author Datta emphasizes the transformative potential of India’s demographic advantage, with its working-age population projected to peak at 1 billion by 2030. This youthful workforce presents a historic opportunity for growth, but the author cautions against complacency. Low labor force participation rates, particularly among women, and a mismatch between job creation and the growing influx of job seekers are critical challenges Datta discusses how inadequate skills, over-reliance on government jobs, and the rise of automation could hinder economic progress He advocates for systemic reforms in education and workforce development to fully leverage the demographic dividend for sustainable growth Using a combination of optimism and realism, Datta explores India's prospects of becoming a high-income country by 2047 in "WILL INDIA GET RICH BEFORE IT TURNS 100?" He stresses the significance of inclusive growth while analyzing important economic factors such as GDP growth rates, inflation, and currency valuation

To guarantee that economic progress translates into higher living standards for all residents, the book ends with a demand for practical policies and consistent changes Datta's work, which is well-researched and provocative, presents a balanced view of India's economic development and exhorts both citizens and officials to prioritize fair and sustainable development

Sleep the most sinister time of the day,

The beasts awake starting to bray, smelling the fright

A gurgling smoke, thick as an iron rope blindfolds the hose of imagination

And sweet respite turn to a bloody adrenaline rush

The body unable to cushion the uncontrolled fright

Vague symbols, a horde of house, a chasing spree

A menacing laugh, the sharp canines salivating

I run and run into the foggy smog,

The road unweathered, barrened brown

Coarse and cobbled with unfriendly faces

Each guarding a malevolent secret, too vitriolic to let loose

I turn left and right, searching faces

But the masked mob still closely at my heel, Just find the stone chipped path of a familiar lane

Of my once home, now a foreign sight

The grass now greyer instead of green, a few clumps here and there, but otherwise clean

Is it happening or a picture of my mind

‘Both’ whispered a sparrow from far behind

My slumber struck mind then started to wake

And refused to accept that gloomy fate

Maybe the house, or the state of my mind

Must be an illusion or reality I must find

And then I ran in the smoke laden air

Thick with despondence and doubt,a small streak I try to find

To bend it by the force of my will

And paint a picture with the sunny yarns

But then morning jolts me awake

A heavy taste of panic still raw in my breath.

The painting unfinished in my mind,

The sweet embrace of dreamless sleep feels exceptionally light

Now my mind free of the captive binds,

The scars of the unsolved fright gleaming painfully under the morning light

And I whisper, “This is just a state of my mind.”

The sunkissed wind wraps me tight,I get a little respite.

Analog Love. Digital Bonds...

Vintage love, hand-written letters that carry tears, kisses, smiles, blushes

Scents of souls traveling far, to reach the hands of the beloved

Eloquent pairs of eyes, wordless conversations, glances, glimpses...

Telephones rare, voices craved for, longings were the bridge...

Once upon a time

Analog love was a beautiful journey of patience, trust, honeyed dreams...

Oh the digital age love, haste as the most comfortable pace

Swipe to find, flirt, text to fight, block and break up Fast food love, too many terms, conditions

Love often loses its essence, warmth...

Easily acquired, accomplished, quickly lost, left with a void...

Constant in contact, rare in connection Gadgets rule relationships, Soul takes a back seat...

Indeed perks plenty...

Voices meet instantly

Distances defied, moments framed, pictures shared Smiles, laughter, tears experienced LIVE through screens

Modern romance, digital love cures the pain in waiting...

Just a call, a text away, an app away to feel one's presence

Escaping the loud silence, loneliness of a non-digital life

I asked love, which period is its cup of tea

Over the centuries, what made it feel special?

Love smiled, looked into my eyes, said: "Wherever there is surrender, belonging, ego killed, I feel alive"

Endlessly we can define, debate, defend

But love feels like love, when hearts become home for each other

There is a timeless scent of Nostalgia, exuding from old school love

A time-defying magic in modern, digital romance

Weathering all hurdles, whatever era of love

Bonds beautifully blossom, evolve

As long as love is remembered as a verb

A respectful, MUTUAL nourishing of souls.
