The 2024 Indian general election proved to be nothing short of a political spectacle, defying expectations and reshaping the landscape of Indian democracy In 2024: The Election That Surprised India, renowned journalist Rajdeep Sardesai takes readers on a compelling journey behind the scenes of this transformative election From economic strides under Prime Minister Modi to the unexpected resurgence of the Congress party, Sardesai uncovers the nuances, challenges, and surprises that defined the electoral process Through his meticulous analysis, the book provides an in-depth look at how shifting voter demographics, campaign strategies, and questions of election integrity influenced the final outcome, ultimately leaving India’s political future poised for change
Introduction: An Inside Look at a Pivotal Election
Rajdeep Sardesai’s “2024: The Election That Surprised India” offers a compelling, behind-thescenes look at one of India’s most transformative elections. Following his previous analyses of the 2014 and 2019 elections, Sardesai takes readers deep into the unfolding drama of the 2024 electoral landscape, weaving a narrative that captures both the historic shifts and the nuanced dynamics shaping India’s political climate
Economic Development Under Modi's Leadership
Rajdeep Sardesai explores the economic strides made under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, particularly in manufacturing and infrastructure Initiatives like ‘Make in India’ have bolstered the country’s manufacturing capabilities and attracted foreign investments, while large infrastructure projects led by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari have enhanced connectivity and trade. With an 8.2% GDP growth rate in 2024, Sardesai reflects on how these developments, combined with India’s assertive foreign policy, positioned the nation as a formidable force on the global stage, especially amid conflicts like the RussiaUkraine war. However, he also delves into BJP’s campaign pivot from development to a focus on religion and caste, suggesting a calculated move to address the complex realities of Indian electoral dynamics
Shifting Voter Demographics and New Influences
The shifting voter demographics are examined by the author, who notes that the influx of younger voters has led to a stronger demand for transparency, inclusivity, and social justice Economic challenges such as inflation and unemployment have also had an impact, prompting voters to question the performance of the ruling government Social media and alternative media outlets have provided a platform for diverse voices, reshaping public narratives and driving a new wave of political engagement, which has complicated traditional campaign forecasting
The Challenges of Polling Accuracy
Pollsters and analysts faced difficulties in accurately capturing voter sentiment in this election In the book, Rajdeep Sardesai attributes this to outdated data sources and an overreliance on national trends that missed localized issues and unexpected lastminute swings. His insights highlight the challenge of predicting outcomes in a country as vast and varied as India, where regional concerns can dramatically shift the results.
Modi-Shah’s Campaign Machinery and Ground Realities
The Modi-Shah campaign team, renowned for its centralized, data-driven strategies and disciplined messaging, is shed light on by Sardesai in the book Their meticulous approach and focus on grassroots mobilization have made them a formidable electoral force However, Sardesai points out the surprising gaps between broad campaign slogans like ‘char sau paar’ (400-plus seats) and the varied realities on the ground Local concerns in different regions and voter fatigue may have dampened the BJP’s momentum, revealing the limits of even the most powerful campaign machinery when confronted with complex local dynamics.
Rahul Gandhi and Congress’s Resurgence
One of the book's most interesting angles is the resurgence of Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party. Sardesai credits initiatives like the Bharat Jodo Yatra with transforming Gandhi’s public image and giving Congress a renewed connection with voters. By emphasizing grassroots issues and forging alliances with regional parties, Congress staged a strong comeback
2024: The Election That Surprised India unveils the shocking twists and turns of one of the most dramatic periods in Indian politics, answering critical questions like why the 2024 election forecasts were so wrong, how the mainstream media’s one-sided narrative shaped perceptions, and why the Modi-led BJP's 'char sau paar' campaign failed to resonate on the ground. It reveals how Rahul Gandhi’s Congress staged an unexpected comeback, the dramatic shifts in just five years, and the inner workings of Team Modi-Shah. With a no-holds-barred look at whether the election was truly free and fair, the role of enforcement agencies, and the battle for state power, this gripping account captures the pulse of an extraordinary election. Following his best-selling books on the 2014 and 2019 elections, Rajdeep Sardesai dives deep into the polarized political battle, offering a riveting exploration of the people, forces, and events that shaped the unforgettable outcome.

Sardesai captures how this shift enabled the party to win back voters, positioning itself as a viable alternative to the BJP
Questions of Election Integrity
In his book, Rajdeep Sardesai delves into the crucial themes of transparency and fairness in the election process. He highlights the concerns raised by opposition parties regarding the Election Commission's role and the growing reliance on technology in voting, which sparked debates about data security and procedural integrity. Offering a balanced perspective, Sardesai explores how these issues influenced public discourse and shaped perceptions, contributing to the overall sense of a highly scrutinized electoral process
Conclusion: A Thoughtful Analysis of India’s Political Landscape
In “2024: The Election That Surprised India”, Author Rajdeep Sardesai crafts a well-rounded, thoughtful analysis of an election that will likely shape India’s political future His deep dive into the Modi government’s achievements, the Congress’s resurgence, and the nuances of voter sentiment provide a detailed, accessible narrative for anyone seeking to understand the current state of Indian politics Sardesai’s account is a must-read for those looking to gain a nuanced understanding of the forces driving one of the world’s largest democracies forward.

The House in November
bySreelekhaChatterjee
drew a chair near the quieted, not-in-use hearth and sat down to setup my equipment magnetic field detector, spirit box, electronic voice phenomenon (EVP) recorder, motion light-up cat balls, electromagnetic radiation tester, and thermometer The library room contained much to trigger my curiosity, as my eyes wandered on the walls covered with shelves crowded with books of all sizes
The lone light from the candle held by my host, Anil Diwan, lit the bookcase, which stood next to the fireplace, filled with discolored folios “Should I leave it on the table?” Anil asked I nodded in affirmation The only window on one side of the room brought in the cold November breeze and the candle flame flickered Anil bent forward and shaded the candle with his hand As soon as I reached the window to close it, a gush of bitter wind blew keener, as if November was in great haste to invite the next month of inclement weather
I heard someone, probably a kid, laughing aloud in the corridor
“Was there a child who had an untimely death in this house?” I probed, wondering about the entities who had entrenched themselves in the comfort of their present abode.
“Yes, one of my great uncles had died of pneumonia at the age of twelve.”
“What’s the kind of activity that you find here?” I enquired.
“The house is peaceful during the daytime. It’s only in the night that it transforms into something else The caretaker and another house help never stay here after sundown I need answers as to whether they are telling the truth ” Anil said, shivering a little
“Shh ” I said, in the middle of my perplexity, pointing at the door “I heard some footsteps ” “Is there anybody here with us? I’m Kunal, and I’m here to help you if you wish to communicate with me ”
I place the electromagnetic field detector in my hand to sense energy changes in the atmosphere The inside air hung heavy on us still, but biting The pointer spikes indicated the presence of some unintelligible being in the room but again dropped down to zero
“I’ve heard that one of my ancestors a courageous man, popularly known as the Bagh Bahadur by the locals had accidentally killed a thief who had ventured into this house. Is there a possibility that the thief…” Anil’svoice trailed away. Suddenly, I felt an icy coldness touch my right hand. The thermometer sensor captured a sudden dip in temperature “Are you the thief who had been killed over here?” I hollered, the echo followed along with a faint, far-off cry Was my shout answered?
“Did you hear that?”
“What? No ”
I reiterated my question, this time in an even louder voice Nobody answered A preternatural quiet The house seemed to be as still as the grave
“For how long have you owned the house?”
“The house belonged to my uncle I used to visit this place during my childhood days Then for the past twenty years or so, I didn’t come here The place was locked most of the time, except when my uncle came for his annual visits It’s recently that my uncle passed away, and the property was transferred to me in November When I reached here, I learned that the house is haunted ” Anil’s voice choked a little, but he succeeded in steadying it and went on
Having a house in this small town on the hills was something that probably made one proud and thankful, specially if one was interested in a surrounding steeped with fresh air and pure sunshine, away from the clangor and dissonance of city life. I wasn’t sure whether Anil was happy or disappointed with the brightness of climate, the singular blue sky, and apple orchards, in a place where the women covered their faces like the newlyweds, with the constant babble of a different dialect unfamiliar to city dwellers.
I felt sorry for the state in which he found the house desolate, almost abandoned by the locals. During the month of November, when the days grew shorter, the air though fresh was sharp like a knife slicing through one’s skin, all that one could do was confine in the comfort of the home and reflect on the present state of affairs and perhaps even arrive at a possible solution
“Who are you?” I continued catechizing, grabbing the audio detector and EVP recorder
“Why are you here? You’re supposed to leave this place It no longer belongs to you ” I continued, lowering my tone But no voice was picked up by the instrument, as I replayed the recorder
Unexpectedly, a wavering speck of light came out from one of the dark corners of the room shifting and disappearing for probably a few seconds Following the light, I ran up to the door before it vanished altogether As I turned around, for a split second, I espied a hazy figure of an elderly man seated on the easy chair near the fireplace His face was bent down, square jaw touching his neck, a cigar on his lips, while he rocked forward and backward, somewhat absorbed in deep thoughts
“Oh, my God! Did you see that?” I said, trying to mollify the sudden quivering of my nerves
“What happened?” responded my host, like a gaunt, grief-stricken man
“Did anyone in your family smoke cigars?” “Yes, my uncle,” said Anil, with a vague jerk of his head “Why do you ask?”
I took out the ghost box where I typed out the words, “What do you want?” It was more like a machine detecting changes in the environmental readings and processing them in words, much like the planchette where a medium was needed to write down the answers on a piece of paper.
A few keywords appeared on the screen “Lost,” “Sale,” “No deal ”
After almost an hour, I called off the investigation My team members who were in different parts of the twostoried building came down into the room where I was sitting with Anil
“What are your findings?” I asked my team “Spotted some light anomalies assumed to be that of spirits That’s it ” One of my team members said Once the electric bulbs were on, I observed Anil’s face unusually tired, as if paralyzed from thinking
“From our investigation, we have concluded that there are only a couple of non-living entities inhabiting this house The ghosts who reside in this house are not malevolent spirits They will never cause you any harm ” “It gives me much comfort to hear that I can peacefully go ahead and sell this house ” Anil rubbed his nose reflectively with his hand
“What? Are you planning to sell this house?” Instantly, I recalled the one–two worded messages “lost,”“sale,”“no deal” that caught my attention during the session of intelligent communication “Probably your ancestors want you to stay over here and not sell the house.” I continued, while Anil fixed his eyes on me with the look of an animal brought to bay.
A few days after the incident, I got a call from Anil to visit the house again Assenting to his request, one evening when I went there, I found the entire building illuminated with string lights, contrary to its previous ghostly demeanor I passed through the turf, wafting its evening incense of fragrance, with the moon above, spewing a cold, calm glow Anil accompanied me to different parts of the house He had brightened every corner even the forgotten ones with oil lamps
As we settled down for tea and snacks in the drawing room, Anil said, “Thank you for helping me realize what my ancestors had been trying to tell me.” “I don’t understand,” I said.
“After much deliberation, I chose not to sell the house. Instead, we have, I mean my family and I, have optedto stay here. It’s not a bad place after all.” Anil said, his eyes brimming with gratitude. “Surprisingly, after that decision was taken, we never heard anyone complain about the place being a haunted one. It’s been one of the most peaceful houses we have ever come across ”
A chill ran down the left side of my body, while Anil was talking about his newly found wisdom Alerted, I looked around On noticing the open window darkened by the sweeping boughs of copses, a smile brushed past my lips

Autumn Leaves
byAnkurR.Gupta
The chill of November morning wrapped around Aamir's shoulders as he walked through the streets of Srinagar, his hometown. The vibrant hues of autumn foliage – blazing reds, burnished coppers, and golden yellows – seemed to mock him, reminding him of the childhood warmth he'd lost since he had moved to the hustle and bustle of big city life
Aamir had returned to his childhood home after a long span, seeking solace from his busy life in these familiar landscapes
As he walked along the Jhelum River, the soft rustle of leaves under his feet echoed through the stillness His thoughts drifted back to his childhood, filled with joy, laughter, and afternoons spent playing cricket in the backyard gardens He passed the old wooden bridge, where he once confided in his best friend, Tahir, about his first love At just 10 years old, he fell for a neighborhood girl six years older than him
A nostalgic smile washed over his face as he remembered the scolding he received from his mother when Tahir disclosed his secret to her He didn't speak to him for one whole day, but by the next morning, they were inseparable again He sighed deeply and wondered how many years had passed since they spoke last The passage of time and their busy schedules had dusted their friendship
The scent of roasting chestnuts wafted from a street vendor, transporting Aamir back to winter evenings spent huddled around a Kangri warmth, listening to his grandfather's stories. But even those warm memories were marred as he was no more.
He sighed deeply, sadly, looking up at the sky." I miss you, Dadu (grandfather)!"
As Aamir turned a corner heading for his guesthouse, he stumbled upon a group of children playing in the fallen leaves Their laughter and shouts pierced the autumn air, and for a moment, his heart lifted He watched, mesmerized, as they crafted leafcrown hats and pretended to be kings, as he used to do as a child
One child with sparkling eyes approached him "Uncle, do you want to join us?" he asked, offering a leaf crown
Aamir's initial hesitation gave way to a smile. As he played with the children abruptly, he wished,
"…...Oh! How I wish I could be a Child again he lamented….Childhood means no tension, no responsibilities, and no boredom," he pleaded sincerely.
Suddenly, a peculiar sensation washed over him, a swirling, dizzying feeling The world around him blurred, and then, as abruptly as it had begun, it ceased When his vision cleared, he found himself standing in his childhood backyard The familiar scent of s Sheera, a Kashmiri sweet delicacy, wafted from the kitchen
A gasp escaped his lips as he recognized the scene Suddenly, he saw a young boy, his clothes soiled in mud, passing through him
He gasped with disbelief The boy was a much younger version of him, perhaps 8-9 years old Before Aamir could react, a woman emerged from the kitchen Oh! It's Mom, he exclaimed as he saw his mother standing at the backyard door of her kitchen Her young skin radiated in the sun's glow
She had that familiar look of mild annoyance as she spoke "You've soiled your clothes again," she scolded the young Aamir, but her voice was affectionately laced
The young boy naughtily smiled and rushed towards her, embracing her tightly, instantly melting her anger She brushed his hair gently and handed over a bowl of Phirni (a dessert), putting a spoonful in his mouth.
"Yum," he said and then rushed into the house.
Tears welled up in older Aamir's eyes! Oblivious to his presence, his mother got busy with her work. He remembered with remorse as an adult how he often got annoyed by his mother's frequent calls-
"Oh! Mom, stop calling me and inquiring about just one thing did I eat well "
His heart ached with the weight of his indifference
Aamir then followed the young boy into the living room, where a crackling fire danced in the hearth, casting dancing shadows on the walls And there he was In the corner, his grandfather sat in his favorite armchair, his eyes twinkling as the young Aamir ran close to the old man to hug him The old man smiled, and the young boy sat beside him, listening to his life stories
A sudden commotion erupted from the adjoining room
His elder brother emerged, his face hot with anger The torn pages of his favorite comic clutched in his hand Before he could catch the young Aamir, the boy darted behind his grandfather for refuge But his brother, relentless, pulled him back, his grip firm on his ear The young boy's cries filled the air as the two boys engaged in a heated brawl, pulling each other's hair Finally, a stern warning from the mother set them apart Seeing his brother's sullen expression, the young Aamir raised his hands to his ears to apologize
"I'm sorry, Bhaiya( brother)," the young Aamir said, his innocence and sincerity shining through his words
His elder brother's anger quickly dissipated
The older Aamir wondered, "Oh! How easy it was to give and accept the apologies unburdened by the ego How simple it had been to admit mistakes and move on…" as he watched the two boys, now engrossed in a game of Ludo.
A furry blur dashed towards him, licking the young boy's feet. It was his beloved dog, Bruno, his soul companion. Aamir knelt, petting the creature, and Bruno looked at him as if sensing his presence.
The house was filled with the sounds of life – the clinking of utensils in the kitchen, the laughter of his siblings, grandfather's stories, the soft chirping of birds outside, and the eager wait for Father to return from the office to open the pandora boxes of a whole day A comforting smile from him that -everything was okay was enough for them to start the next day
It was a world that Aamir wanted back "Oh! How much I miss these times " he sighed deeply
Suddenly, the crackling sounds of crackers broke his lines of thought Rushing out of the house, he was transported to a Diwali night
He saw young Aamir jumping joyfully while setting off firecrackers with his cousins The neighborhood aunties, smiling warmly, offered them homemade sweets The house was adorned with colorful lights and bustling with relatives' laughter and warmth The tantalizing aroma of savory dishes wafted from the kitchen, enticing his senses
Older Aamir recollects how, as a young boy, Diwali was one of the happiest times for him bonding with cousins, new clothes, and never-ending sweets to eat
He mumbles, "In this busy schedule of city life, we have all secluded ourselves from our extended families Hmmm Or is a busy life just an excuse for not trying to connect? He wonders
He then sighs again, "Oh! I miss all this about childhoodfinding happiness in small things no pain, a carefree life "
Suddenly, he watches the house filled with laughter fade away into sadness Diwali's lights are replaced with a lamp burning before his grandfather's picture He sees a young version of himself crying inconsolably
The older Aamir cringed as he recalled his struggle as a young boy to cope with this pain for many months, perhaps years
The scene changed to when he was 12 years old and struggling to understand why his elder brother was irritated at small things. He had stopped playing with him and was confined to his room studying. He watched his Mom and dad's tense faces, coaxing his brother to study hard for his competitive exams.
The whole house had fallen into a deep Hush. Young Aamir's carefree life was restricted with lots of dos and don'ts so that it didn't distract his elder sibling.
The Older Aamir mumbles, "Huh! It was a tough phase But then, as a child, life was always full of so many restrictions 'Aamir, don't touch that; you may break it!' 'Aamir, don't watch that movie!' 'Aamir, don't overeat chocolate!' 'Aamir, you're too young for that bike!'
'Aamir, you'll not go on that trekking trip! Do all those things when you grow up…."
He shook his head as it began to get heavy, and he felt restless imbibing in his body. The world around him blurred, and then, as abruptly as it had begun, it ceased. He found himself on the bed in his guest house, trying to grasp that he was flashing through his childhood journey in a dream
He sat on the edge of his bed, lost in thought for a long time A soft smile played on his lips as he relived the precious moments of his childhood, captured in a vivid dream
"Those were the days," he mused, "simple and carefree "
A flicker of a different memory then surfaced The constraints and the constant feeling of being controlled A frown creased his brow, a stark contrast to the earlier serenity
"Now," he thought, a sense of liberation evident in his voice, "I'm doing things of my choice, getting to decide my course of action and I love this independence "
That night, as Aamir sat by the window, gazing at the starlit sky, he felt his grandfather's voice echoing in his ear
"Son, November fall teaches us that change is inevitable. Summer's warmth gives way to autumn's chill, and winter's snow will soon blanket our valley. But with each season, we adapt. We learn to find beauty in the change."
As winter's snowflakes began to fall, Aamir stood on the bridge, watching the valley transform. He smiled, knowing that just as the seasons changed, so did situations and people The time lost was not meant to come back; we learn to live with its memories, adapting a few things to enrich our present
And that's what he meant to do, he promised
"To relive the best memories of my childhood while enjoying my present life I should rediscover, finding happiness in doing small things starting with spending more time with my parents and making more efforts to strengthen my bonds with my siblings, relatives, and old friends," he mumbled, looking around the valley
The falling snowflakes seemed to nod their heads in approval.
The autumn leaves, now gone, had left behind a lesson: that life, like the valley's seasons, was a kaleidoscope of change, and it was up to us to find beauty in each turning page of life with time, which has only one signboard: "moving forward "

Beyond Doubt by Vivek Nityananda
Behavioral biologist Vivek Nityananda’s latest book - "Beyond Doubt: Overconfidence and What It Means for Modern Society", delves into the nuanced and often misunderstood concept of overconfidence and its profound influence on modern society. Author Vivek
Nityananda explores overconfidence across various realms personal, social, and professional uncovering its psychological foundations and social implications He explains how confidence, while generally rewarded in society, can tip into overconfidence, leading to flawed decision-making and unintended consequences in fields like technology, finance, and leadership According to the book, ‘Overconfidence’ is a trait we often recognize, whether it's the relative who thinks he knows it all or the city planners who chronically underestimate budgets and timelines. However, beneath this apparent bravado may lie a surprising advantage a "superpower" that can boost our motivation, resilience, and influence over others. From CEOs to political figures, society frequently gravitates toward confident leaders, which prompts important questions: Could overconfidence be a hidden driver of success, or is it a risk that can lead to major setbacks? A major theme in the book is the cognitive bias known as the Dunning-Kruger effect, where individuals overestimate their knowledge or abilities Author Vivek Nityananda uses this as a starting point to discuss how overconfidence can lead to risky decisions, particularly in high-stakes fields, where underestimating challenges or overestimating abilities can have significant repercussions He also addresses how digital and social media platforms can amplify these biases, encouraging bold yet unverified claims to gain attention and credibility Vivek doesn’t only critique overconfidence; he also examines how social structures and environments can encourage it, creating feedback loops where confident behavior is often mistaken for competence This misinterpretation frequently occurs in settings like boardrooms and classrooms, where assertiveness is valued and often reinforced by peers His exploration of these environments sheds light on the psychological and cultural factors that fuel overconfidence, highlighting the importance of distinguishing genuine expertise from the mere appearance of it. Social thinkers are crucial in today's digital age, helping us understand how online interactions and data impact social structures and individual behaviors, highlighting issues like power and inequality. Overconfidence, often reinforced within groups, can foster leadership but also leads to risky decisions and strained relationships Thus, Behavioral biologist Vivek Nityananda explores these dynamics, examining the "confidence gap" between genders and its effects on society, advocating for a balanced approach to confidence in our digital world In his concluding thoughts, the author proposes ways to
mitigate overconfidence at both individual and institutional levels He advocates for cultivating humility, encouraging critical thinking, and creating spaces where questioning is valued as much as confidence.
"Beyond Doubt" is a timely and thought-provoking read that challenges readers to reflect on the oftenunseen impact of overconfidence in everyday life and decision-making processes, providing insights into fostering a society where confidence and caution are more balanced.

Though it may not provide the highoctane thrills of other mystery novels, its appeal stems from its characters, setting, and subtle comments on identity and belonging.

Interstellar Megachef
by
Lavanya Lakshminarayan
Lavanya Lakshminarayan’s "Interstellar Megachef" is a dazzling culinary adventure set against the vast backdrop of a multicultural galaxy The book is a sci-fi treat that intertwines the art of cooking with themes of identity, culture, and power. Saraswati Kaveri, an Earth-born chef,
dreams of competing in the prestigious "Interstellar Megachef" cooking show on the planet Primus. Paired with Serenity Ko, a tech genius developing a food simulation, the story explores how their lives and the future of food are forever changed by their collaboration. The narrative’s strength lies in its ability to balance a vibrant, fun tone with deeper commentary on cultural hegemony, xenophobia, and the ethics of technology The author's writing style is both witty and evocative, bringing the universe of "Interstellar Megachef" vividly to life Her descriptions of food are sumptuous, leaving readers salivating over the imaginative dishes The dialogues sparkle with humor and banter, making even the most technical concepts accessible and engaging However, the book doesn’t shy away from tackling serious issues, such as the marginalization of Earth’s culinary traditions and the elitism of advanced societies The layered prose seamlessly blends entertainment with thoughtprovoking ideas, proving that sci-fi can be both delightful and profound The relationship between Saras and Serenity is the beating heart of the story Saras, with her determination and culinary flair, contrasts beautifully with Serenity’s chaotic brilliance. Their dynamic, filled with moments of tension and growth, underscores the book’s central message: creation is a collaborative act, influenced by culture, identity, and shared humanity. Supporting characters, including Kili, Saras’ endearing robot companion, add depth and charm to the narrative. The gradual transformation of both protagonists feels authentic, though some aspects of their relationship could have been more fully explored. "Interstellar Megachef" leaves readers with a mix of satisfaction and anticipation The universe is richly imagined, but the story concludes with a cliffhanger, teasing more to come in the 'Flavour Hacker Duology' Lavanya Lakshminarayan masterfully captures the essence of food as art, memory, and love, while also using it as a lens to critique societal hierarchies and prejudices With its witty narration, polished grammar, and layered storytelling, this book is a must-read for sci-fi enthusiasts and food lovers alike

In colonial India, women writers faced many challenges due to strict societal expectations and gender biases. Despite these obstacles, some women found ways to make their voices heard in Bengali literature The emergence of women's periodicals and nationalist movements offered them platforms to share their
thoughts on cultural and political issues. Anurupa Devi (1882-1958), a notable Bengali author of novels like ‘Mantashakti’, ‘Ma’, and ‘Gariber Meye’, initially kept her writing private, sharing her work only with her sister, Surupa Devi, who also wrote under the name Indira Devi. Although Anurupa’s husband did not oppose her writing, his request to see one of her novels prompted her to throw the manuscript into the Ganges a decision she later regretted When Anurupa Devi began publishing her works, she used the pseudonym "Anupama Devi " However, Swarnakumari Devi, the editor of the magazine ‘Bharati’, encouraged her to write under her real name In her letters, Swarnakumari assured Anurupa that there was no shame in writing and motivated her to submit her work openly This encouragement helped Anurupa take her place in the literary world, where she continued to develop her voice and craft powerful stories Anurupa Devi's novel “Maa” is a rich exploration of human emotions set in the late 19th century during the Bengal Renaissance Translated from Bengali to English by Anurupa Devi's granddaughter, Sanjukta Banerji Bhattacharya, and published by Rupa Publications, “Maa” brings the nuances of Anurupa's storytelling to a broader audience. The story centers on four main characters: Aurobindo Basu, a well-educated man from a wealthy family, his two wives, Manorama and Brajarani, and their son, Ajit. Through these characters, the novel portrays a spectrum of emotions love, greed, jealousy, patience, desire, and forgiveness within the confines of family life, reflecting both personal and societal struggles of the time This translation maintains the original’s lyrical quality and offers a glimpse into the lives of Bengali women during a transformative period in history
Anurupa Devi's insight into family and social dynamics makes “Maa” a timeless work that continues to resonate with readers today.

The novel also critiques how victims of abuse are often vilified in media and public discourse, exposing the insidious ways blame is shifted from abusers to their victims. Author Chelsea Bieker’s storytelling is both gripping and evocative, blending literary depth with thriller-like suspense. Meditations for Mortals by Oliver Burkeman
It's all too simple to find your wallet much lighter in the name of "wellbeing" in the self-care field Ads for crystal-infused water bottles, miracle powders, designer exercises, and a collection of self-help books you didn't even realize you needed start to appear as soon as you sign up for a meditation class.
Oliver Burkeman's book "Meditations for Mortals" questions our obsession with control and perfection Many of us wake up each day feeling buried under an endless list of tasks, spurred by the hope that one day we'll have everything perfectly balanced. Burkeman's message is refreshingly unique: perhaps life isn't about having everything under control. Instead, he encourages us to accept our human limitations and find joy in the unexpected, reminding us that the desire to "have it all" is frequently a delusion. The author structures his book as a four-week journey, offering daily reflections on how to live more fully within our limits. He touches on the world’s infinite demands and unpredictable nature, showing us that accepting these aspects of life not trying to “fix” them is what brings real freedom In our fastpaced, achievement-driven culture, this perspective is both comforting and transformative Burkeman’s approach nudges us to reconsider what truly matters, inviting us to embrace life’s inherent messiness One of the book’s most thought-provoking discussions revolves around our relationship with the news While Burkeman advocates for limiting exposure to the overwhelming flood of updates, he acknowledges that balance is essential Staying informed can be crucial, but constant news consumption often adds to our stress Burkeman’s advice is a reminder that we don’t have to be perpetually plugged in to stay engaged with the world there’s value in selectively choosing what we pay attention to. Burkeman also introduces the concept of “imperfectionism,” which encourages us to let go of obsessive perfection. Instead of endlessly striving to produce flawless work, he suggests focusing on the joy of creation itself. This approach frees us from the paralysis of perfectionism and leads to more authentic, inspired results. For overachievers who feel the constant “productivity debt” of never doing enough, Burkeman’s ideas offer a liberating alternative: track accomplishments with a “done list,” and break big projects into smaller, achievable tasks Ultimately, Meditations for Mortals invites us to redefine success and find meaning in the journey rather than the destination Burkeman’s conversational tone and witty insights make this book an engaging read for anyone tired of chasing an elusive ideal In a world that often equates worth with achievement, Burkeman’s message is both a challenge and a comfort: accept your limits, let go of control, and discover a richer way of living.
Middle Class India by Manisha Pande
The Indian middle class is both the architect and the critic of India's aspirations. – C.N.Vakil
"Middle Class India" by Manisha Pande provides a comprehensive analysis of the Indian middle class, tracing its evolution
from the colonial period to its current influence in society The book explores the growth of the middle class, which now constitutes 31% of India's population and is projected to reach 60% by 2047 The author divides the history of this class into three key phases: the period before independence, the post-independence transition, and the modern-day middle class shaped by the 1991 economic liberalization. The book delves into the factors driving the middle class's rise, including political, social, and economic changes over the decades. The first part of the book examines the preindependence middle class, exploring its transformation from an apolitical group to one deeply involved in the freedom movement. Events like the Battle of Plassey, the Bengal Renaissance, and the Revolt of 1857 played key roles in this shift Post-independence, the middle class continued to evolve, especially as it navigated the complex socio-political landscape in India Manisha Pande details the changes the middle class underwent, including its increasing political influence and the role of figures like Gandhi and Nehru in shaping its identity In the post-liberalization era, Pande highlights the rise of consumerism, innovation, and entrepreneurship among the middle class, who became more ambitious and politically engaged However, the book also explores some of the challenges faced by this class, such as economic strains following the pandemic and the rise of communal tensions These factors, Manisha Pande argues, may be pushing certain segments of the middle class toward a more polarized and sectarian outlook. Through meticulous research, "Middle Class India" provides a nuanced look at the evolving role of the middle class in shaping the country’s economy, politics, and society. It examines both the triumphs and the challenges of this influential group, offering valuable insights into how the middle class may navigate the future.
Pande’s analysis prompts reflection on the role this class must play in fostering economic growth, social cohesion, and peace in India

The Blue Hour by Paula Hawkins
"The Blue Hour" by Paula Hawkins is a gripping, atmospheric psychological thriller set on the isolated Scottish island of Eris
The story revolves around Grace, a solitary woman living in a house once owned by the famous artist Vanessa Chapman, whose unfaithful husband vanished twenty years ago. The island,
accessible only for twelve hours a day due to the tides, is home to secrets and buried histories. When a human bone is discovered within one of Vanessa’s artworks, a visitor, Julian Becker, an art curator, arrives to unravel the mystery, leading to a series of devastating revelations that threaten to uncover long-hidden truths Author Hawkins masterfully weaves multiple perspectives, drawing readers into the complex and troubled minds of her characters Vanessa, Becker, and Grace each have their own dark obsessions, with their personalities evolving through deeply intimate character studies The book’s pace is deliberate, focusing more on character development and the eerie atmosphere of the setting than on fast-paced action Despite this, the story remains engaging, with vivid descriptions and a constant undercurrent of tension that keeps readers hooked, even if they don’t necessarily connect with the characters The novel excels in its exploration of human nature, presenting a cast of deeply flawed individuals whose actions drive the narrative forward. While none of the characters are particularly likable, their inner conflicts and motivations are fascinating. The dynamics between Grace and Becker, reminiscent of 'Misery', add a layer of psychological intensity. The themes of obsession, artistic legacy, and the darkness hidden beneath surface-level relationships are explored in depth, making this not just a mystery, but a profound meditation on the complexity of human desires However, the novel’s ending looks to draw mixed reactions While the final twist is satisfying, the conclusion leaves several questions unanswered, which may frustrate some readers seeking closure Despite this, the open-ended nature of the finale may suit those who appreciate a more literary approach to mystery
Overall, "The Blue Hour" is an engrossing, dark tale of obsession and secrets, cementing Hawkins’s reputation as a master of suspense and character-driven storytelling

The Glassmaker by Tracy Chevalier
Tracy Chevalier’s "The Glassmaker" is a captivating exploration of art, family, and history, spanning centuries in the enchanting world of Murano, the famed Venetian island of glassmakers The story primarily follows Orsola Rosso, a determined young woman in 15th-century Murano, who defies societal norms to
pursue her passion for glass beadmaking Chevalier masterfully intertwines Orsola’s journey with the rich cultural history of Venice, creating a narrative that is as intricate and enduring as the glass the Rosso family crafts. The novel’s unique structure is reminiscent of a skipping stone, leaping through time from Renaissance-era Venice to the modern day while maintaining focus on the Rosso family. This inventive style of narration allows readers to witness historical events, from the plague and wars to the challenges of climate change, through the eyes of characters who age at a different pace than the world around them While this approach showcases Chevalier’s creativity, some readers may find the modern sections less compelling compared to the vividly depicted historical eras Orsola's tenacity and resourcefulness are central to the narrative She makes a name for herself as a woman in a male-dominated field by producing beads, a profession that is disregarded by others but is essential to her family's existence From the tragic effects of the plague to the shifting challenges of glassmaking in a changing world, the stories of the Rosso family's successes and sorrows are exquisitely depicted Readers are given a wonderful peek into the creativity and tradition of Murano thanks to Chevalier's thorough research into the trade of glassmaking. "The Intelligent Investor - The Definitive Book on Value Investing", authored by Benjamin Graham and first published in 1949, is hailed as a foundational text in the realm of value investing Known as the "father of value investing," Graham presents a compelling framework that
The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham emphasizes long-term investment strategies centered on intrinsic value rather than market speculation. His insights have left an indelible mark on the investment community, influencing renowned investors like Warren Buffett, who regards the book as “by far the best book on investing ever written.” After decades, running successfuly among the readers who seek experise in Finance and Investment sector, the book's third edition in 2024 leaves no stone unturned to mirror the value investing principles. Author Graham’s philosophy lies the principle of 'value investing', which urges investors to identify stocks that are undervalued those trading below their intrinsic worth He asserts that investors should prioritize fundamental analysis over fleeting market sentiments that can lead to irrational decision-making A crucial tenet of Graham's strategy is the 'margin of safety', which advocates purchasing securities at a significant discount to their intrinsic value This approach safeguards investors against potential miscalculations and market fluctuations Furthermore, Graham differentiates between 'defensive' and 'enterprising investors', highlighting the varying levels of engagement and risk tolerance among market participants Benjamin Graham's exploration of'market psychology' reveals how investor emotions greed and fear often drive market volatility, rather than rational analysis. He emphasizes the importance of discipline, urging investors to remain steadfast and not be swayed by short-term price movements. This perspective fosters a mindset where investment decisions are grounded in thorough analysis rather than emotional reactions. Additionally, Graham draws a clear line between 'investment' and 'speculation', cautioning against treating stock purchases as mere bets. By promoting a thorough analytical approach, he empowers investors to make informed decisions that prioritize long-term value Despite critiques that some concepts in "The Intelligent Investor" may seem outdated particularly with the rise of technology stocks the core principles remain relevant today The emphasis on fundamental analysis, risk management, and a long-term perspective continues to resonate with both novice and seasoned investors While the book may be perceived as dense and challenging, particularly for those seeking quick investment strategies, it offers profound insights into constructing a sustainable investment strategy rooted in sound principles
On the whole, "The Intelligent Investor" stands as a cornerstone of investment literature, imparting wisdom that encourages a disciplined approach to investing, prioritizing long-term success over short-term gains Benjamin Graham's teachings provide timeless guidance that is essential for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of investment fundamentals. The book not only addresses the nuances of value investing but also inspires a thoughtful approach to navigating the complexities of the financial markets.
For those serious about cultivating a robust investment strategy, Graham’s work remains an indispensable resource.

The Mighty Red by Louise Erdrich
In "The Mighty Red", Pulitzer Prize-winning author Louise Erdrich explores the intricacies of love, personal ambition, and the consequences of environmental and economic upheaval Set in the small town of Argus, North Dakota, the novel revolves around a tense love triangle between Gary Geist, a young man desperate to marry
Kismet Poe, and Hugo, a home-schooled giant with his own plans for the girl. As the characters grapple with their desires and personal insecurities, the backdrop of the 2008 economic crisis adds urgency to their choices and relationships Erdrich’s portrayal of Kismet’s family, including her mother, Crystal, a truck driver with spiritual visions, and her father, Martin, a failed investor, adds complexity to the story Through their perspectives, the author examines how the past, filled with both personal and societal regrets, shapes the characters’ futures The tension between the characters is mirrored in the larger environmental issues that the community faces, such as the degradation caused by fracking and pesticide use, reflecting a broader commentary on human impact on the land The novel is rich with layers of conflict, from Kismet’s internal struggle between Gary and Hugo to the larger societal shifts that threaten the stability of Argus Erdrich’s writing captures the essence of these interconnected lives, blending personal dramas with reflections on the state of the world. The themes of love, sacrifice, and the search for redemption are intricately woven into the narrative, providing readers with an emotionally charged and thought-provoking experience. While "The Mighty Red" is primarily about the struggles of ordinary people, it also offers a sharp critique of the forces that shape their lives economic instability, environmental destruction, and unexamined histories.
Through its vivid characters and evocative descriptions, Erdrich crafts a novel that is both a meditation on the complexities of human nature and a poignant commentary on the world’s pressing challenges.

Oh! There Arrives
Winter
by Aparna Mukherjee
As I wake up in the morning
A pleasant view i see
Birds are singing and chirping
Bright sunshine and chilly breeze
Darting through the window
And piercing my skin
With winter, comes the merry time
Happiness all over Christmas and celebration time
Knocks the door of the end of the year
Winter gives a chilly feel
Darkness covers the earth
Snow-covered streets and hills
Silent nights sends a horrifying chills
How pretty Mother Nature seems to be
Who is dressed in a white gown
She wears a snowy crown
The chills of winter beckons me
To spend some time with the fairy season

LAST LEAF FALLING
by Swagata Soumyanarayan
She approaches the headstone as the living are left behind.
The chaotic world of outside seems far away seperated by wrought iron fences that guard the departed.
Mighty oaks and walnuts trees stand sentinels and azaleas blush at her long awaited tread.
She was a familiar face here, till she stopped coming.
The sound of silence speaks as wild flower bushes play hide and seek colors leaping off their tips, a sun weakened by a nip in the air – a cool caress on her cheek. She had waited so many winters to be together!
A church bell tinkles breaking the spell as she nears her place of sleep. She leans against the sun warmed headstone hearing past whispers, ‘we’re not apart, you and I.’
The late afternoon rays are gentle upon her withered face.
The years have been long but time has stretched its arms to include her in this circle at last
A few evening stars are beginning to emerge, their blindness being dispelled with the diminishing light
A deep hum fills the air as she sees specters, and smiles, unafraid of meeting the ones who waitedfamily and dear ones long gone.
She could now let go of the grief, of the guilt and pain of remaining alive with a part of her always missing.
The ones surviving weep as her exhausted body is laid to rest. Her heart echoes to them, hold me in your thoughts, and celebrate my journey into the beyond.
The wind disperses leaves around the grounds, releasing them to embrace earth’s softness, her colors of fire keeping the frost at bay.
Rebirth, renewal, another life is awaited somewhere as the coldest of winters promises a brand new spring.

Lazing at the foot of November, I witness the falling of flowers, And the leaves fading in colour, Like the declining vision of mine, I am ready to stand firm and face, The fierce foe: the Winter of Life.
The days have begun to shorten, Making room for longer nights, The birds have started to land, Settling in their cozy shelters, Oh! Turning the tumultuous minds, Of the days from bad to better.
Resting under the gentle sun, I gaze at the clear blue sky, With occasional smog in the air, When the winds are less chilly, And the rains have bid adieu, I am ready to hug the chills.
The transition is inevitable around, On the stunning lanes of November, Along the path of quick transition, When Queen Nature throws her smile, Guiding to sprinkle bits of gratitude, Under the lens of transformation.
I plead with everyone to slow down, To get ready for the harsh weather, The plants, birds and human beings, The climate shifts from mild to severe, Through fresh snow or freezing wind, Better set to survive the days ahead
As every ending marks a beginning, Of a brand new journey in life, The winter paves the way, Taking the baton from autumn, For the beautiful spring season, The winter of life marches ahead.
Before the winter takes hold, Filling my body with wrinkles, Let me fold my hands to pray, For the past cherished seasons, As the autumn climbs the stairs, To reach winter, our final goal.
In the deserted and lonely home, Amidst the solitude of the reality, I soak in the warm recollections, Of accomplishments and regrets, With the Moon playing peekaboo, In the receding skyline of my hair.

Frozen dreams, fleeting time, frantic mind
November quietly watched her tears
Between the doors of Autumn, and winter she stood Waiting, hoping for an escape into the colorful spring
Embrace the warmth of summer's Sunshine...
Aching realities, unbearable coldness within, unable to thaw
Yet, a hot cup of cardamom tea, some poetry came to her rescue
Autumn whispered to her, "In moments you live"... The wind blew a crimson leaf, she picked it as her bookmark
Holding on, is an art when you are broken multiple times...
Calendars bought, gifted, replaced every year in hope Stacked diaries sulk, for the unwritten pages
She sighed at the smudged ink, for the few lines written Tears rinse our pain, including the unspoken Her eyes carried rivers, seas to shed and unburden...
Every time she shovelled challenges, tired of trudging Life set new heaps of snow, cruelty as its only fluent language
She knelt in front of Time, that never paused Looked above feeling numb, empty, heavy simultaneously Shelley's voice filled the air, "If Winter comes "
Gazing at its barrenness, she saw herself in the tree
Until the branches seemed holding the beautiful Blue sky
Perseverance prepares the soul's soil, for a forest of flowers
November gave her chills, as a voice loudly in her dream said:
"Your wings would heal, the Sun shall shine."
She knew, it was poetry.
