김 미 진 (Mijin Kim) 안녕, 난 일곱살이야. 나는 덕산 병설 유치원에 다녀. 너희들은 무엇을 먹고 사니? 너희들은 생일이 언제니? 너희는 어느 학교를 다녀? 나는 독서록을 쓰는 걸 좋아해! 너희들은 무엇을 좋아하니? 나는 어른이 되어서 선생님이 될 거야. 너희들은 뭐가 되고 싶니? 내 생일은 7월 25일이야.
Hi, I am 7 years old. I am a student at Duksan Byungsul Kindergarten. What do you usually eat? What is your birthday and which school do you attend? I like writing summary and my thoughts after reading books. When I grow up, I will become a teacher. What do you want to be when you grow up? My birthday is July 25th.

김 미 주 (Mijoo Kim) 안녕, 나는 김미주야. 나는 2학년이고, 6반 이야. 나는 이것을 쓰면서 기뻐. 나는 친구 들이 많아. 너는 친구들이 있니? 나는 잘 모르겠구나. 우리 나라에는 김치랑 한복이 있어. 김치는 너무 많아서 계속 먹을 수 밖에 없어. 네가 우리나라에 오면 맛있는 김치를 먹을 수 있어. 한복은 여러 가지 색깔이 있어. 태권도는 우리의 무술이야. 나는 우리나라가 너무 좋아. 그리고 영어도 배울 수 있어. 그럼 안녕.
Hi, I am 9 years old and my birthday is July 29th. I am second grade elementary student. My class room number is 6 and my student number in my class is 31. I am happy to be writing this. I have many friends. Do you have many friends? I can’t tell. In my country Korea, we have Kimchi and Hanbok (Korean traditional dress). There are too much Kimchi that we have no option but to continue eating them. If you visit our country, you can try tasty Kimchi. Hanbok is in many different colors. Taekwundo is our martial art. I love my country. And I can learn English. Bye-bye.

10 | 네잎이의 고민
깊은 산 속 어딘지 모르는 산중턱에 ‘네잎’이라는 클로버가 있었어요. 네잎이는 잎이 4개이며 잎모양은 하트 모양이에요 Somewhere on a hillside in a deep forest, there lived a clover named ‘Four-Leafy’. ‘Four-Leafy’ had four leaves which were heart-shaped. Four-Leafy’s Worry | 11
그러던 어느날 세잎클로버인 ‘짜증이’가 네잎 에게 말하였습니다. One day, a three leaf clover named ‘Zazeung-e’ told Four-Leafy.

“네잎! 넌 너무 잘난 척을 잘 해. 솔직히 질투가 난다. 그래서 넌 짜증나. 나랑 놀지 말자!” “Hey, Four-Leafy I think you are always on your high horse. To be honest, I envy you. That’s why you are annoying. I don’t want to hang out with you anymore!”

친구를 잃기 싫었던 네잎이는 하루 종일 고민하였습니다. Four-Leafy who really didn’t want to lose her friend spent the whole day agonizing over this problem.

그리하여 병원에 가서 잎을 1개 뽑고 잎모양을 둥그런 모양으로 바꾸는 수술을 받아야겠다고 생각했어요. Finally, she decided that she should take a plastic surgery so that a doctor can nip off one of her leaves and make their figure turn into regular round shape.

네잎이는 또다른 세잎클로버 ‘애은’이에게 가서 말했어요. She went to ‘Yeun’, another three leaf clover and told her. “애은아, 아무래도 나는 다른 세잎클로버처럼 변해야겠어. 그래야 미움도 안 받고 질투도 안 받을 거 같아.” “Yeun, I think I should change myself into a three leaf clover like all others. Then I won’t be hated or be getting jealousy from them.”

그때 애은이가 네잎이의 손을 잡고 “네잎아, 꼭 다른 사람의 미움을 받는다고 행복을 날려버려도 될까?” 라고 말하며 홀연히 사라졌어요. Yeun held Four-Leafy’s hands tightly and said, “My dear Four-Leafy, would it be okay to blow your own happiness just because you are detestable to others?” With those words spilled out, she suddenly vanished.

네잎이는 그 말이 무슨 뜻인지 몰랐어요. 그리하여 마을의 최고 연 장자이며 점쟁이이신 느티나무 희화 할머니를 찾아갔어요. Four-Leafy didn’t get what she meant. So he went to Grandma Heehwa, the ‘Zelkova’ grandmother who is the oldest of the forest creatures and a fortune-teller in the village.

마침내 저기 느티나무 할머니가 보였어요. Finally, she arrived at where she was.

“할머니~, 여쭤볼 것이 있어요.”
“Grandma, I have got something to ask.”
“할머니, 제가 다른 세잎클로 버처럼 변해도 될까요?”
“My grandma, what do you think if I change into a three leaf clover like everyone else?”
24 | 네잎이의 고민
“그래, 그것이 무엇이냐?”
“My girl, what is it?”
“네잎아, 남의 행복을 위해 너의 즐거움을 버리면 안되는거야. 너의 즐거움으로 남들은 즐거움을 받는다고 생각해본 적이 없니?”
“My sweet Four-Leafy, you cannot abandon your own joy for others’ happiness. Haven’t you ever thought that your joyfulness could bring a delight to others?”

네잎이는 생각했어요. Four-Leafy thought.
26 | 네잎이의 고민
‘그래! 나의 모습을 바꾸면 안되겠어!’ ‘That’s right! I’m not going to change who I am!’
그 후 네잎이는 자신의 모습을 사랑하며 평생 아름답게 살았답니다. After that, Four Leafy lived happily, respecting her own figure all her life.
