Lithuanian national instrument

KanklÄ—s is one of the oldest Lithuanian folk string instruments.

KanklÄ—s are made out of wooden box and metal strings.

KanklÄ—s can be played sitting or standing.

The payer uses fingers to hit, cover or pluck the strings.

Lithuanians believed that when a person died, his or her soul went to live in a tree. Kanklės made from that tree were very special. When played - the dead person could speak or sob in a man’s voice.
