Arlesey Resident Becomes Published Author.

Local resident Dave Thomas and his wife moved to Arlesey in 2016 after searching for somewhere more local to their friends and haven’t looked back since! “We looked for a more peaceful place to live and came upon Arlesey.” Dave told the Arlesey News Magazine. “Once my wife found a house she liked, we were happy to leave the hustle and bustle of Nor th London and move to the relative tranquillity of village life.”

Dave’s idea for his book, Painless Proper ty Investing, came about after being an investor himself for over 18 years and wanting to help people who were looking to build their own income -producing proper ty por tfolio.

“I worked in several contract positions as a project manager over the years as I built up my own proper ty por tfolio.” “The book shows that it can be done alongside your current job until you are making enough income to replace your salar y.” Dave went on to say, “I am always happy to talk to people interested in proper ty and to help them where I can ” Dave’s email is dave@davethomasproper ty com

Arlesey W.I Not All Jam & Jerusalem!

The first ever WI in Britain was founded in Anglesey Wales in 1914 It quickly spread throughout the land and many ladies signed up including ones from the royal family Fast for ward to 1918 and Arlesey founded their own WI Socially things were ver y different back then Women had only just been given the vote, upon marriage most women gave up employment to look after the home Our records show that for the first few years most of Arlesey’s committee were men including the chairman, secretar y and treasurer, however, a few years later that changed The village WI was enthusiastically taken up, possibly because of the few social outlets available back then One of our late elderly members recalled joining when she left school aged 14 and said she wasn’t the only one.

Arlesey is one of the few W.I’s in Bedfordshire, or even nationally, to have its own hall. The hall was formerly an old cinema in Letchwor th and sometime in the 1930s was dismantled and rebuilt on its present site. In 1981 disaster struck. There was a massive fire which destroyed the entire roof, windows and contents. So, what to do? Insurance didn’t quite meet the entire cost of rebuilding and refurbishment so the W.I at the time had a massive fundraise throughout the village and somehow found the wherewithal to do so. I think you’ll all agree that was no mean achievement.

In past times the WI speakers had more domestic topics such as cooker y, sewing, keeping chickens, gardening and of course making jam and preser ving We still have members who do all those things – and – we have members who admit to hating any thing domestic! Recent speakers have included a comedian/ventriloquist, stor y teller, de -cluttering, chair yoga, Kurling (we all had a go), humorous verse and ver y diverse topics One speaker ’s subject was Anxiety and Insomnia which was surprisingly well attended Another was Birds of Prey and brought along a number of well behaved, beautiful owls which sat patiently on tables throughout the evening Some brave members even got to hold them We also take par t in other village events too, such as fetes and the St Peter ’s Christmas Tree Festival

So it’s not all Jam and Jerusalem but don’t take our word for it, come and see for yourselves Perhaps you’ve recently moved here and would like to be par t of the community and make new friends Also you don’t have to be a resident of Arlesey to be a member You will always find a welcome with us as new people bring new ideas, and your first meeting is free We meet on the second Tuesday of ever y month at WI Hall at 7 30 For fur ther details ring Rita on 01462 638347

We would love to see you, as after all strangers are friends we’ve not yet met...

News from - Arlesey Conser vation for Nature (ACORN)

As we arrive at the star t of Spring we hope for some warm weather so that we can see the benefits of the work over the Winter and star t the seasonal tasks on the paths Anyone visiting the Glebe Meadows in recent weeks will have noticed the work of both ACORN and Wildlife Trust volunteers This has included removal of the brambles that were spreading across the open ground in the meadows We have recently been laying a hedge on the boundar y adjacent to the railway station and star ted to pollard the Willow trees on the bank of the River Hiz near the old Arlesey Bridge

Whilst pollarding can appear a bit brutal, this pruning just involves the removal of the upper branches to promote the growth of a dense head of foliage, intended to make trees live longer and reduce damage from the weight bearing at the top of the tree

In the last month we have also arranged and attended two events of interest An informative awareness session at Etonbur y Orchard in Arlesey provided volunteers with an update on how we can suppor t the orchard behind the school It was great to see local interest in this valuable resource which benefits local wildlife and is preser ving some of Bedfordshire’s fruit growing heritage A big thank you to Sally, Konni and Liz for their time and exper tise in developing our understanding of ever y thing from root stock to pruning and ‘Standard Form’.

Along with other volunteer groups, ACORN also attended an annual catch up with our Rights of Way Officer from Central Bedfordshire Council and discussed ongoing effor ts to maintain access to paths.

During March we will be continuing to put up the bird boxes locally and intend to make an early star t in maintaining the Permissive Path from the Arlesey Old Moat to the Mill Pits, but will monitor and manage any other paths needing our attention with the suppor t of our Footpath Champions.

To hear the latest news or repor t areas of concern follow updates on our Facebook page ACORN’s Facebook picture of the month was submitted by Devon Dicky who caught the Siskin in Glebe Meadow, Arlesey

LOCAL life..

Finding out more about the people behind our local busineses

We are so pleased you are enjoying this new monthly feature where we spend a few minutes getting to know some of our local tradespeople and adver tisers. Thank you to ever yone who has told us how much they enjoy reading this feature!

This month, we’ve had the pleasure to chat to one of our long -term suppor ters and adver tisers (plus familiar face to many we’re cer tain!) Rober t Rae of PlumbTek.

Rob, many people know you in the local area as you have been in business for quite some time now. How long is it now that has PlumbTek been offering such a good ser vice to the community?

We’ve been trading independently and locally for 12 years now Originally, like many small businesses we covered a much larger area to keep the diar y full Now we tend to stay in a much tighter area, although rack up the miles driving up and down the village or town as some say!

Rob, what's the one thing you love most about doing the job that you do?

Meeting a wide range of customers, and all the local recommendations we get from them once we’ve completed a job. I like to think we always go the extra mile. Over the years many of our customers have become good friends also!

When you're not busy working, how do you like to relax and spend your free time?

Im a petrol head at hear t and love most things with engines, I can usually be found on days off messing with cars and motorbikes, whether working on them or driving/riding them I normally have a couple of projects on the go at any one time

Let's talk bucket lists Rob - If you had one, what 3 things would be on yours?

I would love to visit Thailand and some of it’s islands I’d also love to tour Europe in a camper van Now our kids are older, hopefully we can make this happen at some point!

Latest News from Bim Afolami - Hitchin’s Member of Parliament

My family and I live in a local village and serving as the Member of Parliament for our community in Hitchin is a privilege With Stotfold and Arlesey set to join the Hitchin constituency at the General Election, I have been out meeting so many of you to hear your priorities.

As a Member of Parliament, I want us to have strong communities which we can all be proud to call home

You’ve told me about the di culties in getting a local GP appointment I get it Local healthcare is personal to me, as the son of a local doctor and pharmacist That’s why I’ve been campaign to open a new GP surgery to serve our local villages As your MP, I’ll extend that campaign and work to secure a new GP surgery here - to help clear up waiting lists and increase local GP capacity

You’ve told me about your concerns over inappropriate, badly-integrated local development I get it We all understand the need for new housing to allow people who’ve grown up locally to stay in our communities, but it can’t come at the expense of the things that make us all proud to call this area home As an MP, I’ve worked with developers and our local Councils to demand that new infrastructure is delivered first - before houses are built

And I’ve championed increased protections for our beautiful green spaces. So that the beautiful natural environment we love is there for our children and grandchildren to enjoy As your MP, I’ll work with you to ensure that Arlesey and Stotfold remain attractive communities you can be proud to call home

As a Member of Parliament, I work hard to ensure that I’m always listening, open, and accountable to you You can sign up for my weekly newsletter at www bimafolami co uk/sign-my-newsletter and I look forward to meeting you in the coming months

News from Pix Brook A c ademy

We reach the end of a busy half term and look for ward to some brighter weather and an end to the rain This term has included some truly critical moments in the life of Pix Brook Academy including our first OFSTED inspection While it was under taken a number of months ago there is a moratorium on sharing the outcome of the inspection for a period of time which has now elapsed An inspection for any school is a big moment for ever yone involved, this includes the School, Trust, parents and pupils This is even more so for a new school receiving its first inspection I am pleased to say that it went extremely well and while many colleagues working in education have a view on the process at the moment this is the governments approach to monitoring schools and we are not in a position to change that.

We were inspected by four colleagues, two from His Majesties Inspectorate (HMI) and two from OFSTED. Three were existing or ex headteachers and all ver y experienced school leaders. The process is rigorous and ever y element of the school is thoroughly reviewed. The framework for a new school is exactly the same as for any other school and, although we have grown as fast as any school in the countr y over the last four years, including living through the pandemic, we were rightly required to have ever y thing in place that any other school would.

It is par ticularly pleasing the inspectors noted how well our pupils behave and their attitude towards their learning – the Outstanding judgement we received is well deser ved and is reflective of how well our pupils respond to the high expectations the school has of them I would like to take this oppor tunity to thank parents for their continued suppor t of the school in this area It is only by working together that judgements at this level can be achieved

It was also most gratifying that inspectors recognised some of the challenges we faced in growing so rapidly over the last few years by judging Leadership and Management as outstanding Ever y member of staff at Pix Brook and BEST has worked incredibly hard to ensure our provision is of the highest calibre and that ever y oppor tunity is taken to ensure what we provide is as good as it can be Having been judged officially “good” we will take the oppor tunity to learn from this process and consider what we need to do next There is no time to pause in education, ever y day matters and there is always much more to do! Stephen Adams - Principal.

Restoring calm..

When we are hit with something unexpected, especially if unwanted, stressful, frightening or all of the above, we may become flooded with panic. When this happens, we can lose the ver y skills we need to address and navigate such a situation. Yet the way that our bodies are programmed to respond to stress is influenced by the way those around us responded to our stress during our early lives. This sets up a stress response at a deep, but unconscious bodily level. In the face of stress, our systems can automatically activate a panic response, which inhibits our ability to think rationally and clearly. These are the ver y par ts of the brain we need most to manage stressful events. And so, while we are not able to consciously stop our body’s automatic response, we can learn how to respond differently when the panic response is activated.

We do this by learning to recognise what is happening and what helps us, personally, to restore calm to our system. This aids the recover y of our thinking capacity rather than leaving us stuck in a state of high emotion

I was recently reminded of this by a friend who shared their anxiety about a situation They recognised their anxiety and responded by moving from their worr ying mind into their body, by putting music on and having a dance! While ‘lost in music’, an idea popped up about how to manage their situation By restoring their ability to relax their bodily system, inspiration arose!

Anxiety can be contagious When we acknowledge rather than deny it and do something to calm it, we can break the cycle and re -engage the brain’s thinking capacity In turn this can help us find a way for ward What calms your system?

Update from the Need Project February facts & fi gures..

• 705 parcels provided.

• 378 top- up-bags collected from our Pop- up sites

• £49,605 - the estimated value of the food for Januar y.

• £6,602.50 - the average monthly cost to run the charity (Rent, Insurance, Fuel, Van, Staff related expenses)

• 1709 The amount of adults we have helped in Januar y

• 110 - the amount of pensioners we have helped.

• 1461 - the number of children we have managed to help this month (figures above include our best before food )

Well another ver y busy month considering there’s only four weeks in Februar y There seems to be no slowdown in how busy we are, and the need for parcels keeps on growing compared to each previous year We are ver y, ver y grateful as always for all the suppor t we get from ever yone through prayer and gifting, and the person who says hello, how are you? Our top up bags give away is also ver y busy in Stotfold, Sandy and Shefford and we regularly see an increase of people at our doors, but we are glad they come because if they didn’t the food would go in the bin and that is so wrong. This month we are expecting visits from two local MPs from mid and Central Bedfordshire (on separate visits) to see what we do (could be some interesting conversations).

We continue to tr y and track down food and have continue to spend monthly on stock and to be honest it is a concern how much we are spending, but there is a massive need for help, and it is not going away. But we are still ver y much committed to our original mission of feeding those who genuinely need it, unconditionally and through Gods grace and provision we will continue.

On a seperate note, finally our offer on the premises we were after was accepted and our solicitors are in communication wih the sellers We have engaged an architect, so hopefully things are on the move (please pray for this situation as it is a big step for us and a big commitment), but we know we can’t stay where we are as we have outgrown our present place, which has and continues to be a brilliant place for us to operate out of

The new place will give us the oppor tunity to create a more efficient, permanent way of working with food and, we will have a great oppor tunity to develop a versatile space for our community with massive options There are two stages to the building project

One is (our focus and main mission and will always be) feeding those in need And secondly creating a space for community and space for us to develop our relationships with our community

The two- step plan is:

Step one - get our food set up working as soon as possible with a natural flow between premises.

Step two - is the development of the upper level into a community space with rooms, a café area and a quiet space, If you are a local business and would like to suppor t the project to achieve step two, please contact me on 07496 833940. There is a lot to do, but it will give a great space and will benefit our community, so if you can help, please contact us. Praise God always. Gordon

ARLESEY TOWN FC ON THE LOOKOUT FOR A NEW CHAIR.

In Februar y, Arlesey Town Football Club confirmed that Dave Kitson has resigned as Chairman, effective from the end of the current 2023/24 season. Across his two spells at the Club, both as a player at the star t of the centur y and more recently as Chairman, Dave has shown a remarkable level of loyalty and commitment to the club, and will remain a club ambassador.

Dave's involvement with Arlesey Town has produced some astounding progress off the pitch - we now boast one of the most modern clubhouses in local non-league football, we're proud to offer football to multiple boys and girls youth teams as well as our 1st team, we have a leading online ticketing system, and we are getting ready for the installation of new LED floodlights Unfor tunately, a change in personal and professional circumstances means that Dave is no longer able to commit the time and attention required to lead the Club onto the next stage of our journey

The Club is now on the lookout for a new Chair, to lead the Club along the next stage of our journey, which is due to include the installation of a 3G pitch to expand our community reach even fur ther Are you community-focussed, ambitious, and passionate about spor t? If so, it could be you! If you think you could lead the Club, we would love to discuss the oppor tunity with you Please get in touch to find out more, either via our Contact Us form on our website on https://www.arlesey townfc.co.uk, or by contacting Club Secretar y James Harding on 07534 994594 or jpharding93@gmail.com.
