LOCAL life..
Finding out more about the people behind our local busineses...
Carl, you are one of our more recent adver tisers in our magazines, helping local businesses with their digital adver tising needs. For anyone unfamiliar with exactly what this means, are you able to explain it better than we can!
Absolutely! So I specialise in what’s called Google Search Adver tising, which means I facilitate businesses placing adver ts on the Google Results Page whenever someone searches for something related to a product or ser vice they provide This can be par ticularly useful for businesses that have a lot of local competition as they can be seen ahead of their competitors at exactly the right time someone is prepared to buy or book
How long has your business been running Carl and what journey did you take to get to where you are today?
I spent four and a half years at a marketing agency learning all things Digital Marketing but I took a keen interest in the Google Ads side of things early on In August 2022 I left that role to take a career break and do some travelling in Asia When I came back home in December that year I didn’t quite feel ready to leave the travelling lifestyle behind and wanted to go back, but I needed a way to fund it! So I leveraged my network and decided to star t my own business. I spent around a month in the UK setting things up and onboarding a few clients before heading back out there in 2023. It went really well - I built my business up to be quite successful and got to stay out there for a fur ther 6 months!
And now you are a Stotfold resident How long have you lived in the town and what made you choose to settle here?
Yes, I moved around 9 months ago
and I’m en life here v
I spent most of my life living in Stevenage, and visiting Stotfold you could almost feel the community spirit straight away - I have quite a few clients in Stotfold, Arlesey, Baldock, Letchwor th as well - so being based here also means I’m quite central to them.
For many of the younger residents in our community, technology will most likely play a large par t in their working lives - what advice would you give to somebody looking to make themselves a career in digital marketing?
My number one piece of advice, which probably applies in any kind of career or industr y, is don’t neglect your processes! I spent a long time tr ying to understand the ser vice I would provide not just from my perspective, but from the perspective of my future clients Businesses need marketing, but people need communication, they need to feel like you care I’d say focus on the people first and you’ll get your chance to flex your creativity with them later
As par t of this feature we enjoy hearing more about the people behind the businesses they run. You're obviously a ver y technically minded, busy person - how do you choose to relax and unwind?
I’m quite a simple person really and choose to spend most of my free time offline. I love reading; I’ve always got three books on the go, one for personal growth, one for knowledge, and one for enter tainment I’m a pretty keen runner; I’ve also recently taken up painting - I completely zone out when I’m doing it so it’s been a pretty peaceful hobby!
#Stotfest50 - It’s almost time to celebrate!
Plans are now well underway for this two day event, organised by Stotfold Town Council to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Stotfold becoming a town. The main event will take place on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th June when ‘Stotfest50’ comes to the Arlesey Road Recreation Ground. You can enjoy a varied line-up of acts to entertain all of the family, including music from a variety of acts and even some local, homegrown talent. On the Sunday it’s the turn of our local community groups and organisations, including the Stotfold Twirlers and Gifford Dance Academy take to the stage.
Eatfeast will be attending (especially for those that missed them last month due to the wet weather!) You are also welcome to bring along your own picnic
If you are interested in taking part or volunteering at what looks like a fabulous two day event - Please contact Stotfold Town Council who will be delighted to hear from you. - We’ll see you there!
All T he Fun Of T he Fair!
The sun shone, quite appropriately all weekend for the 20th Anniversary Stotfold Steam Fair 2024.
The event saw many people visiting from far and wide to see the variety of stalls, attractions, steam engines and classic cars that all form part of this wonderful annual event.
Throughout the weekend we ran a photography competition to find our next front cover shot - We thought you would like to see a selection of some of the pictures that were submitted as there were some wonderful shots! Thank you to everyone that took the time to enter!
We hope these give you all some idea of just how fantastic the weekend’s events wereCongratulations to everyone involved in planning the weekend and a huge thank you for everyone that volunteered over both days!

Stotfold Good Neighbours Annual Lunch
The years simply fly by and earlier this year we held our yearly lunch for the Good Neighbours' Group of clients Again, we have to thank all those involved, especially Jo Martin at the Academy of Central Bedfordshire and all her students who made such delicious food and kindly looked after around 35 people at St Mary's Church Hall.
It was a lovely social time for all those who gathered and really meant a lot especially to those who have mobility issues Thank you to all the drivers who ferried our clients to the hall and home again and all who helped to make the day special to everyone.
Also thank you for all the donations amounting to £135 00 which goes to the chosen charity of the Academy. We all look forward to our next lunch.

News from the Mill. Update from Stotfold Watermi ll
Twenty years ago, Edvard Munch’s iconic painting The Scream was stolen from the Munch Museum in Nor way, the Mars Rover had recently landed safely on Mars, and Stotfold Mill hosted its ver y first Steam Fair and Countr y Show!
A much smaller event than it is today, the Steam Fair aimed to raise much-needed funds to help get the Mill rebuilt and running once again
Fast for ward two decades, and here we are in 2024, with one of the biggest events we’ve ever had. 2,700 cars and nearly 10,000 visitors came through the gates over the two days with over 300 people per forming across our various stages,
The weather was glorious (who remembers the mud from 2023? We may never recover from that year!) with sunshine, blue skies and a nicely cooling breeze, and it was amazing to see the showground packed with people. Thank you all so much for helping us to celebrate our 20th Steam Show in excellent style!
We would also like to say an enormous thank you to all our volunteers to make this event possible – and who keep the Mill running throughout the spring and summer. The Mill is entirely run by volunteers (we don’t have a single paid member of staff ) so ever y time you visit the people you see working are there because they love the Mill!
And there is so much to love: the fascinating histor y of the building itself, the agricultural and industrial heritage it represents, the sense of community it provides, and the oppor tunity to learn about our local area
Many of our volunteers give up their Sundays to help open the Mill to our visitors, and also help out on other days, at team meetings, preparation days and more Without these amazing and dedicated people, the Mill would not exist So: thank you
Plans are afoot for our next event, the Working Steam Weekend in October, but in the meantime, we’re looking for ward to welcoming as many of you as possible to our regular open days throughout the summer (the details of our opening times are available on our website and social media pages)
Please check our website and social accounts regularly for updates about our vents large and small! www.stotfoldmill.com

News from Fair field Park Lower School
This month has been full of enrichment oppor tunities to bring the curriculum to life and give our pupils first hand experiences Our Year 1 pupils were able to utilise their knowledge about the Great Fire of London during an interactive workshop – they visited all the different shops that would have existed at the time and created candles at the Candlemakers, bookmarks at the Tanners and bread at the Bakers to name a few; they then took on the role of a historian to identify and classify evidence from an architectural dig
Year 3 pupils showed their school values during our Faith Tour to visit a Church, Gurdwara and a Mosque in Bedford –they had a chance to explore and speak with the leaders of the places of worship and learn more about the different faiths
Our residential school trip to Cay thorpe PGL outdoor adventure enabled the Year 4 pupils to experience outdoor adventurous activities involving climbing, paddle -boarding, fire making and more. Many faced their fears with the encouragement of their peers and felt a sense of accomplishment – well done Year 4s. Finally, linking to their learning about the histor y of flight, our Year 2 children visited the Shuttlewor th collection to learn more about the many historic aircrafts to bring their learning to life.
During the first half of the Summer term the topics that are being covered by all classes are:
Penguins and Squirrels: What can I explore on the farm? Barn Owl, Snowy Owl, Honey Bee Class: Where can we go? Badger, Hedgehog, Tur tle Class: Do our school grounds suppor t plant life?
Swan, Robin, Seahorse Class: How has flight changed? Panda, Fox & Otter Class: How has the local high street changed?

ARLESEY PHARMACY
Our decarbonisation project is progressing well and good news for anyone using Rook Tree Lane is the staff car park is becoming more available at times, reducing the parking on the road! The on- site work is nearing completion and our school field is beginning the process of being rejuvenated, which will be a relief as the children and staff really miss having the space and lovely environment that this offers As additional decarbonisation work, St Mar y's has been selected to have both LED lights and Solar Panels installed over the next couple of years We are privileged to have been chosen and ver y happy and excited that we are able to make such a positive impact on the environment as a result of this work Until our next instalment please enjoy the many summer term plans along with warmer weather!
We star ted the second half of the summer term with lots of activities, trips, workshops, mock exams and GCSE’s. There have been numerous spor ting activities to include two football finals, along with a variety of enrichment oppor tunities across all years
Our Year 6 pupils enjoyed a day trip to the Warner Brothers Harr y Potter Studio, walking in the footsteps of Harr y Potter at Hogwar ts The Studio Tour offered the unique oppor tunity to explore two soundstages, as well as a back lot that’s filled with original sets, animatronic creatures, and breath- taking special effects Ever yone thoroughly enjoyed their post SATs treat exploring the wonders of the Wizarding World and sharing the magic of the studio tour
Transition events have been taking place with visits to local feeder schools We are really looking for ward to meeting ever yone who will be joining our ETA community next academic year For some, the school may already be a familiar place due to already having siblings here or attending a community club at the school during the evening, and to others it may be an entirely new experience for the child/ren and their family. The next few months will be exciting for ever yone and we look for ward to welcoming our new star ters to ETA and suppor ting ever yone with their transition.

News from Roecroft Lower School
Hopefully as you read this, me saying it has been a warm and sunny May will have come true and we are now well on the way to it feeling like Summer
School has been full of excitement this last month; school trips, visits and residentials have taken place and will continue into the rest of summer term These extra events really do add to the curriculum and help suppor t the children’s values, their wellbeing and their team spirit
Over June and July, we look for ward to our annual spor ts day and dance morning, alongside our teddy bears picnic to celebrate the end of year for our reception children This month we have an update form our lead practitioner and specialist for Early Years, Miss Ashby.
In Reception, our topic this term is 'Once Upon a Time...' and we have been spending the term reading and finding
out about lots of different books and stories
We have already read 'Jack and the Beanstalk', written a set of instructions and planted our own beans We had to look after them and obser ve the changes as they grew We found out about the life cycle of a bean plant and thought about what might be at the top of it if it grew as tall as Jack’s We got ver y excited when the stalks star ted to grow! They ended up growing ver y tall so we took them home and some of us planted them in our gardens.
We then looked at 'Handa's Surprise' which is about a little girl who lives in a village in Kenya who wants to surprise her friends with delicious fruits. We talked about the differences between the village Handa lived in and where we lived and also linked this to some fruit- and vegetablebased ar twork, inspired by the ar tist Giuseppe Arcimboldo We loved writing letters to our friends when we read 'The Jolly Postman' stor y
We discussed different holidays and day trips we have been on with our friends and families and wrote about these memories in our letters We were ver y excited to walk to the post box in small groups to post them and wait for the letters to be delivered We also loved the stor y 'There's a Superhero in Your Book' and looking at old and new superheroes as well as writing about which superpower we would like to have 'The Gingerbread Man' was another favourite where we designed our own gingerbread men to run away!
Over the remainder of this term we will be continuing to look at lots of different books and stories including 'The Ver y Hungr y Caterpillar', 'The Gruffalo', 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt', 'The Three Little Pigs' and 'If the Dinosaurs Came Back.' We will also be having our ver y special Teddy Bears Picnic to celebrate the end of our first year at school, as we get ready for our exciting transition into Year 1. Until next month!
The summer term is upon us and pupils at PBA have been taking advantage of the usual range of activities and events associated with warmer weather and lighter evenings at school The PE team continue to surpass themselves offering a host of matches against other schools in Cricket, Rounders and athletics Year 6 Pupils are also accessing swimming lessons for those less confident in the water May also saw the year 6 pupils under taking their SATs examinations They approached these wonder fully and the suppor t provided by the community in helping with invigilation was greatly appreciated
It has been exciting to plan for next September A large number of new pupils will be joining the school and to see the school grow from 51 pupils in September 2019 to over 900 in September 2024 will be fantastic Having progressed to the point where we are just one year away from being full, with the corresponding development of the site and staff is amazing Music and Drama are now par t of the school’s provision, including lessons and clubs; breakfast and breaktime snacks are a normal par t of the school day;
News from Pix Brook A cademy
our e - spor ts programme is being developed and resourced and the planning for the star t to GCSE courses next September is ver y much in hand
Plans are in place to enable new pupils to visit the school, Step- up day will provide all pupils with an experience of next year and arrangements for spor ts day are in hand
Amongst all the excitement lessons continue to be delivered and pupils continue to work hard With the multitude of activities coming our way it is really impor tant to remember the education of our pupils, the focus on teaching and learning and the constant desire to enable pupils to make progress and achieve their potential is our purpose
As adults is it also wor th remembering that young people are not the finished ar ticle, and our task during their formative years is to help them reach their potential by focussing on those things that will improve their life chances: the main thing: their education
We look for ward to updating you once again on all our news in next month’s issue. Stephen Adams - Principle.

Dear Editor,
I wanted to write in just to thank one of your adver tisers for doing such a great job pressure washing my driveway This is a job I have attempted to do myself and have had family members tr y to do over the years, but have never quite got it looking anywhere near clean enough - let alone the time it took and mess we made in the process!
Out of interest I called Full Flow Cleaning Professional Pressure Washing featured in last month’s magazine to see how much it would cost to have to have it cleaned professionally and to my surprise they were extremely reasonable.
Geoff came along on a typically wet day but undeterred he and his accomplice set about cleaning the drive, being sure to protect the house and garage from all the mess As it was such a wet day the results were hard to see. A few hours later once the sun decided to come out and dr y the driveway I was absolutely taken aback at how much brighter it seemed and how fresh and clean it now looked Geoff returned as promised the following day to finish the job with sand and a protective treatment
I would like to thank Geoff and his team for such a great job done and would like to also pass on my recommendation to other Stotfold News readers looking to have this done It has made such a difference to my proper ty and was also great value for money.
Monica West.

Dear Editor,
I'd like to express my gratitude to the resident who recently raised concerns about littering at the Riverside Recreation Ground. While there will always be a small group of individuals who fail to dispose of their waste properly, they represent a minority and do not reflect the majority of conscientious residents in Stotfold who utilise the numerous bins provided by the Town Council and Central Bedfordshire Council
Readers may have noticed an ar ticle fur ther in the edition highlighting the work of the Town Rangers These individuals are responsible for emptying our litter bins three times a week, as well as under taking litter picking and other maintenance activities throughout the town.
If you witness any incidents of littering similar to the one depicted in last month’s picture, please do not hesitate to repor t it to the Town Council by calling 01462 730064 or contacting us through social media channels

Our top up bags give away is also ver y busy in Stotfold, Sandy and Shefford and we regularly see an increase of people at our doors, but we are glad they come because if they didn’t the food would go in the bin and that is so wrong This month we are expecting visits from two local MPs from mid and Central Bedfordshire (on separate visits) to see what we do (could be some interesting conversations )
On a seperate note, finally our offer on the premises we were after was accepted and our solicitors are in communication with the sellers We have engaged an architect, so hopefully things are on the move The new place will give us the oppor tunity to create a more efficient, permanent way of working with food and, we will have a great oppor tunity to develop a versatile space for our community with massive options. There are two stages to the building project. One is feeding those in need. And secondly creating a space for community and space for us to develop our relationships with our community.
The two- step plan is:
Step one - get our food set up working as soon as possible with a natural flow between premises. But, before we do this, we have some major construction work to do, which we have budgeted for and have secured funds for most of this.
Step two - is the development of the upper level into a community space with rooms, a café area and a quiet space, which will come later. The money for this is something we are seeking through separate building funders.
If you would like to help suppor t the project in any capacity, please contact me on 07496 833940
There is a lot to do, but it will give a great space and will benefit our community. Praise God always. Gordon
•754 parcels provided in 21 working days • 401 top- up-bags collected from our Pop- up sites • £53,020,estimated value of the food for the month of March • £6,602.50, the average monthly cost to run the charity • 23%, the increase in the amount of food parcels delivered this month • 2110adults, 1916 children & 119 pensioners - the amount of people helped in April.
Monday - Friday 10am - 4pm Wednesdays 1pm - 4pm

Mental Health Matters - with Jo Loach
Rest - Our fast-paced culture tends to privilege productivity over the periods of inactivity required to sustain human health. Living with the constant stimulation, stress, failings and distractions of technology can result in our human systems overloading or even crashing. If we fail to maintain appropriate boundaries to protect our need for space and downtime, we may pay with our mental and emotional health.
Humans need rest; mentally, emotionally and physically We need times when we can simply be These times allow our inner resources to focus on the business of recovering, rebuilding and refreshing our systems Without these times we star t to accumulate backlogs that eventually make their presence felt via symptoms such as insomnia, anxiety, depression, angr y outbursts, illness and more There are other factors that can cause these too but doing too much and being too little can exacerbate any existing vulnerability to these
Rest is not an optional extra, no matter how busy or indispensable we think we are. Rest allows essential internal works of recover y to take place. Without these we will likely begin to malfunction externally.
The need for rest varies from one individual to another in line with the body’s make up, the life stage and situation; responsibilities/dependants and ability to manage these well or other wise.
A commitment to recognising the rest we need and what prevents us taking it, is paramount to our quality and longevity of life We may experience resistance from those who want more than we can give We may also find internal resistance from our own beliefs about rest There will also always be factors beyond our control that impact our health
But it is within our control and our interests as well as those around us, to commit to developing and practising the often-forgotten ar t of rest
