From the Editor Welcome to our April edition. This month we celebrated our sixth anniversary being at the helm of your Stotfold News Magazine. Thank you to everyone that sent us some lovely messages through our facebook page to congratulate us on our journey. We continue to absolutely love the role that we play within our local community and our priority and motivation to continue to work hard will always be Stotfold and the residents living within in. Thank you to Tony Di-michele who is just one of the many residents that has recently sent us in some fabulous pictures to go towards our calendar competition for 2022. You can find out more with regards to our competiition in conjunction with Stotfold Town Council on page 10 of this month’s magazine. Like Tony’s picture featured on our front page this month, we may also use one of your photographs as one of our next front covers!

April 2021

There is lots to read inside your April issue of the magazine, plenty of residents letters, news from your local schools and lots more besides...we look forward to the day when we can once again start bringing you news on local events - we are keeping everything crossed that those days are not too far away! We have particularly enjoyed talking to Mark Shepherd this month who has told us some wonderful stories about his family and the shop they have owned along Stotfold’s High Street for many years. We hope you enjoy the special two page feature on ‘The Old Wool Shop‘ as most people will know it, on pages 8 and 9 of your Stotfold News Magazine. this month. If you have a story to tell us about the history of the house you live in or perhaps you owned a local business which also has a story to tell, then please do get in touch. Until next month!

Joanne

We recently needed to have some work done to our motor vehicle and used your magazine to find a suitable garage nearby that might be able to assist us. We were delighted to find that Abery Motor Centre in Arlesey were offering a collection service and after speaking to Jayne at the garage and being impressed with their customer service we booked our car in with her for the following week. Our car was collected by Jayne and the work completed to a very high standard, within the time frame they had promised. We were extremely pleased with the service we received and so thought we would write them a letter of recommendation so that we could inform other local people just how efficient they are. We would recommend Abery Motors to anyone looking to have their car looked after by a highly professional and well skilled local garage with great customer service! Our thanks again. Mr G K.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

My name is Niamh and I am a Sixth Form student conducting academic research for my Extended Project Qualification. The topic of my essay for the qualification is “To What Extent Are Vaccines Effective?”. I chose this question because I want to work in pharmaceuticals when I am older, developing treatments for illnesses. I am driven by my own medical condition which went undiagnosed for years and doesn’t have a cure. I remember how I felt as a child, when I found out ‘they couldn’t fix me’, and I was discharged from the hospital for the last time. I don’t want anyone else to have to feel like that, and so I decided to take it into my own hands and make a difference. I am reaching out to anyone who reads this letter to participate in my study, which is anonymous and quick. The results will be discussed in my essay.

As a keen dog walker I am more aware than ever about the increase in dog napping. It is clearly now becoming a much bigger problem.

The questions are as follows: Have you, or will you be taking the COVID vaccine? (yes/no/undecided) Do you have any concerns regarding the COVID vaccine? (yes/no) Please expand on the above questions/ provide reasons for your opinion. To respond please either email your answers to the following address, or fill in the online survey which can be found on the Stotfold News Magazine facebook page. Email: VaccineStudyReplies@gmail.com (email is not case sensitive) Thank you so much for your participation. Niamh Allen.

I can only suggest dog walkers carry a whistle as most dog walkers will come flocking if a whistle is blown long and hard. It would break my heart if one of my dogs was taken, so please carry a loud whistle and don’t be afraid to use it. M Davies.

We love receiving your letters!

Email them to stotfold.news@yahoo.co.uk or pop them to us by post using the address on page 3 of the magazine!

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

Having seen a public notice posted by the Fox and Duck about the pending Etonbury Park proposal I was concerned to see yet another planning application would be winging its way to Central Beds so thought it would be helpful for readers of Stotfold News to see some of the real figures of the state of development in our 'Minor Service Centre' as CBC calls us. I looked up the following information on the CBC website. Housing Allocations - in the 2035 Local Plan; HA11 - Land at Shawmer Fm - 10 units, in progress, HA12 - Land at Arlesey Rd - 161 units, in progress, HA13 - Roker Park - 62 units, in progress Large Unallocated sites - not in the Local Plan; Manor Fm - 16 units CB/19/00226, land for sale, Astwick Rd - 100 units CB/19/03872, in progress Taylors Rd - 32 units CB/17/05913, site cleared, Land rear Silverbirch - 95 units CB/18/00725, in progress, Taylors Rd/ Astwick Rd - 78 units CB/19/01302, in progress. These add up to 554 new homes on new development sites in Stotfold, that's more than a 10% increase on the number of households we have at the moment. In the July 2020 Central Bedfordshire housing and land supply statement the Council is shown to have a 5.57 year supply, this is in excess of Government policy requirements for a supply of sites sufficient for a minimum of five years. This new site lies in the lower school catchment area of Roecroft which is currently a 3 form entry taking 90 children each year but when CBC goes to a 2 tier system, due to the fact that Roecroft cannot physically expand any more, it will have to reduce this to admitting 60 children. In 2020 there were 73 requests for a place at Roecroft and that is with the existing level of housing in Stotfold, no new builds. Current lower school capacity in Stotfold is 750 places, with 554 additional homes how many children are going to be able to get a place at their school of choice? Larksfield surgery has 13,000 registered patients - how many more will 554 homes add; 1000; 2000? Stotfold doesn't need the 181 new homes and 135 retirement apartments that Etonbury Park would bring. This application alone is more than 50% of the total number of approved units that are already committed to be developed in Stotfold. It's quite simple, there just isn't capacity for any more development in the area, no matter how well you dress it up with public parks, play areas and wildflower meadows. Despite what UK Land says Etonbury Park cannot be a 'new sustainable community'. As residents of Stotfold this scheme will impact us, if you are concerned that the impact will be a negative one then make sure you tell CBC. It's no good waiting until the diggers move in and then wondering where all the birds have gone, why the roads are snarled up, why you can't get a doctors appointment or your child can't get a place at lower school. We need to get the message across that Stotfold is full! Name and address supplied.

History of Stotfold

The Old Wool Shop Many people will be enjoying the daily updates on the recently formed facebook group ‘History of Stotfold.’ Prompted by the stories we have read, we are delighted to feature a specially written article about the Old Wool Shop Written for the Stotfold News Magazine by Mark Shepherd.

Most people in Stotfold will be familiar with what is often referred to as the Old Wool Shop. This is the shop in the High Street which in recent years has been in the shadow of the Co-op.

The shop has been part of the Shepherd family for a few years now, but records of the shop go back much further to 1800. We have no real information about the shop until the turn of the century 1899-1900 at which time, the shop was tenanted by Wally Howe who was a baker and his wife Annie who was a butcher. Believe it or not, the bakers oven is still located in the shop although it has long since been bricked over as the shop and connecting property have been re-developed.

The Old Wool Shop along Stotfold High Street dates back to the 1800’s

In the 1930’s the shop was purchased by my family, R. Shepherd & Sons (Timber Merchants) who had their wood yard in Church Road. During the war, the shop was the lodging place for four Italian prisoners of war who were stationed at a PoW camp in Royston, and who were bought in to work in the timber yard. They became firm friends of the family and three of them married local girls and made their homes in England once the war had ended. At the start of the 1950’s the shop was rented by Mrs Larkin who sold toys and bikes and what we would now call ‘leisure gear. ‘ Mrs Larkin kept the shop for a few years until Renee Pendleton took it over later in the same decade. (Renee’s grand-daughter Victoria Pendleton would go on to become the Olympic cyclist). Renee, a talented artist, introduced wool and needlecraft supplies to the shop and this was to be the continuing theme for years to follow. Renee retired in 1965, and the shop was tenanted by Ivy English. Ivy was talented in needlecraft and continued to sell wool and needlecraft supplies. Ivy remained in the shop for 19 years until she decided that it was time to retire. At this point in 1985, my Mum and Dad, Jill and Dave Shepherd took it over. Before they became involved with the Wool Shop, Jill and Dave ran the Parade Stores just along the road (now the Kebab shop). They had been there for a few years, but amongst other things the threat of the Co-op was on the horizon and a change of scenery was needed.

Dave and Rob Shepherd at work – the old bakers oven can be seen in the back wall

Their new venture was started 100 meters along the High Street at the Wool Shop. The Wool Shop was old – even in the 80’s it was old and bits of it were sagging, falling off or peeling and faded. It was decided to totally refit the shop, which included major building work to the inside and front of the building. The work was carried out by my Dad and his best friend Rob (also a Shepherd, but not related). Rob was a builder and between them the works were carried out to produce the shop that we now see on the High Street. Essentially, the entire insides of the shop were to be removed and a new, stronger first floor put in so the upstairs could be used for shop space. The original staircase to the first floor was in the middle of the shop and one of the first jobs was to move this to the far end of the building.

History of Stotfold

Past & Present.... During this work, I became involved - part way through sawing there was suddenly a loud crack, and the WHOLE of the upper floor gave way! In a matter of seconds, I found myself, saw still in hand, surrounded by great clouds of dust, on the ground floor! The remains of everything we were trying to remove all around me!!

The original shop interior – look at the sagging ceiling – no wonder it collapsed!

Being the youngest and most gullible, I was asked to go upstairs to cut through a remaining joist which would allow the staircase to be removed. The idea was that with the staircase gone, the floor should be easier to take out.

‘You alright, mate?’ came Rob’s voice from somewhere in the dust. Although dramatic, it had been a surprisingly gentle collapse and no damage had been done to anybody. ‘Yes’, I coughed back. ‘I’m fine…’ ‘Well’, said Rob, grabbing a wheelbarrow, ‘that was a lot easier than I thought it would be…’ and immediately started clearing the debris while I struggled to get outside for fresh air! The revamped and renamed shop officially opened in October 1985. Now called Cards n Crafts, it still sold the familiar wool and needlecraft merchandise, but now also pocket money toys, greetings cards and items that local craftspeople have created and wanted to promote. My Mum Jill would remain in the shop until 2016 when she decided that it may actually be time to have a rest -well she was knocking on a bit at that point (I can say that, I’m her son!) It still belongs to the family, and is at present tenanted by Mick Singh, selling household and garden supplies.

Have you ever wondered The decorative reinforcements on the outside of the shop. what the sheep, needle and cotton, ball of wool and artist pallet and brushes were for? Well, apart from representing what the shop sells, they are also holding the shop together! They are attached to the steel beams on the inside of the shop and without them, it’s likely that the shop would start to collapse because of its age. We hope you have enjoyed this look back at one of our most recognisable shops in Stotfold. Thank you Mark for sharing this with us all - it was most enjoyable to read!

News from

Stotfold Watermill

Have you seen it? We start this month’s report by drawing your attention to the brilliant video that was put on the mill’s Facebook page – and elsewhere – by Toby James. It is an interesting trip around the nature reserve by Toby, but more particularly shows how he collected a number of black bags of rubbish from the site. It is a stark reminder to us not to litter our environment and hopefully will be an inspiration to others who might lend a hand in collecting the thoughtlessly discarded waste, not just around the reserve but along our local lanes where many enjoy a walk for exercise. If you have not yet seen Toby’s video please do view it. Many thanks Toby and our congratulations on a fantastic effort! By the time you read this report it is possible that a television film crew will have visited the nature reserve. Although confirmation and details are awaited, we have been asked by the makers of the BBC programme Antiques Road Trip to allow them to film the experts driving a classic car into the reserve at the end of March or early April. As the programme producer, Colum Innes, told us ‘the whole area looks beautiful and very picturesque’.

The government have published their Covid-19 Response as the provisional roadmap of the way out of the national lockdown. Whilst we await further details it would seem that not before Step 3 on 17th May will we be able to open the mill and tearoom to the public. Even then distancing restrictions and rules on wearing facemasks will remain, so that we will probably only be allowed limited numbers and need to operate a booking system on Sunday afternoons. The tearoom has been provided with suitable screens and a one-way system set out in preparation for opening. Please watch out for further announcements on our website, www.stotfoldmill.com, outside the mill and elsewhere. Last month we invited you to peruse our website, particularly the section The Watermill, leading to the History of the Mill, the Archive Group and the Collection. Hopefully some of you enjoyed the exploration and learned more about the fascinating story of the mill. The answers to the questions set are:

1. Skyfall 2. Local farm on the Barton Hills 3. Shelled and lightly roasted 4. Plain wholemeal flour and plain natural white flour 5. The Kingfisher Gift Shop 6. Paintings by a group of talented local artists 7. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram 8. 2.00 9. W M Odell of Radwell Grange 10. £0.10s.0d 11. £1365.18s.9d 12.1734 13. We hope this encouraged you to find out more about Stotfold Watermill and all it has to offer.

We look forward to seeing you as soon as we can open again.

News from Stotfold

Methodist Church

April 4th - It's Easter! And we must make the most of this central festival of the Christian faith.

The story of Jesus culminates in his arrest, mock trial and execution, nailed cruelly to a cross of wood by the occupying Roman soldiers. We mark that day on Good Friday, 2nd April this year. Jesus is certified as dead before the end of the day and is hastily buried in a nearby Jerusalem tomb. At nightfall, the Jewish Sabbath begins and everyone leaves. Not until the early hours of Sunday do Jesus’ followers make their way to the tomb, in order to properly treat his body, buying funeral spices on the way.

The group of disciples, all women, find the tomb open and empty. Shocked, some reported a vision of angels, saying that Jesus was raised from the dead. Another, the person we know as Mary Magdalene, testified to meeting Jesus himself, risen from the dead, commanding her to tell his other disciples. Within days many people had seen the living Jesus. Our very earliest documents from the time speak of five hundred witnesses. It's their testimony that brought faith to the following generations, even to today. Their message gives us faith in the living Jesus Christ, and thus hope in the direst of circumstances. So we'll celebrate and remember Easter! And may God help us all to find that saving faith too, and share and benefit from the hope faith brings. Revd. Graham

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

I would like to make a mention to a lovely guy who my neighbour and I have met recently. We have been enjoying early mornings walks for quite a while. Seeing all of the litter laying around really got to us and so one morning so we decided to do something about it and started picking it up. The man we met told us we had inspired him to do the same on his walk. Today, we saw the same gentleman who said, I’m glad I saw you,’ and the gave me a new litter picker so I could get in the hedgerow easy with out getting scratched so much, (even though he was scratched to bits.). What a wonderful example of how much people still care for our town. Linda Preston.

Dear Editor,

I would like to thank some wonderful Stotfold people. I had been with a doctors surgery in Letchworth since I was born (I am now 80 years old) and was very nervous about changing doctor. I needn’t have been, Larksfield Surgery welcomed us so well, especially nurses Karen, Dawn and Dale who looked after my husband wonderfully when he suffered a fall. The Stotfold Good Neighbour Group have driven us back and forth this month so many times, when our jabs were due I had no success phoning to book our appointment but Wendy Craig from the group sorted it out for us online and John - also of the group, took us along and saw us through the appointment. Thank you Wendy & John. Lastly, we want to thank Andy from AJB Fencing as we had a broken fence post and phoned Andy to ask if he could help. The job was completed all within a couple of days of calling him - excellent service, thank you Andy. With our thanks to everyone. Eileen and Ray Minnis.

Poppies &Poppyfields Nursery News Welcome to our news! We are thoroughly enjoying having everyone back! Last month, children continued to spend the predominant part of their time outdoors. We are focussing on books this term, to coincide with World book day, back at the beginning of March, with The Hungry Caterpillar, Handras Surprise, The Rainbow fish, Gingerbread man, Jack and The Beanstalk all firm favourites as they can be linked to activities outside. The term culminating with Beatrix Potter stories and Peter Rabbit making his Easter appearance!

At Poppies, children have also been listening to music and pretending to be animals, with wiggly snakes, prowling wolves and digging dogs having a lovely time! Children have explored Spring, making spring pictures and discussing animals that lay eggs, with dinosaurs proving more popular than birds! Children have also loved watching for signs of spring and our resident robins at Poppies have been popping into the building, uninvited! We have increased the loggery at Poppyfields, providing children with opportunities to create den structures by balancing the logs, and also inspiring imagination as a log becomes a magic wand, an oar for their imaginary boat, stirrers for mud pies and hoses when they play ‘fire fighters’!!! With imagination in mind, children had some lovely musical sessions, using items from the garden such as logs, wood, pans, bowls and lids to recreate samba music!

We are sending a huge thankyou to Simon and Emma from SJS Carpentry Solutions. They spent two weekends providing Poppyfields with a beautiful new canopy in the garden for the Bumble Bee bubble to use. It will provide much needed shelter from the rain and also shade in the sun. This will have such a positive impact on our provision. Thankyou from us all! Many thanks to our families for their continued support and understanding during these difficult times. This makes our role so much easier and is very much appreciated by us all.

News from

Roecroft Lower School

Spring has brought with it the most welcome sunshine, if anything it has certainly made daily exercise more enjoyable! This month we were very happy to welcome all of our children back into school. The building hasn’t been the same without all of our children and families here, however, the two different groups have done exceptionally well under very unusual circumstances. Thank you to our families and children at home, who worked hard to access the daily lessons and complete lots of excellent work. Thank you to our key worker families and children, you have come to school and given it your best, working hard to achieve your goals. I can confidently say that myself and the whole team are very much looking forward to a well-earned Easter break. We do need to continue to carefully follow the guidance and rules around distancing though - the change for April should be that we are able to meet with other families over the holiday period and coming weekends in a careful and considered way. Please do continue to stay safe and look out for each other, we all still need to keep safety at the forefront of what we do. Wishing you a very happy Easter, Mrs Cross Key Stage 1 Update In Year 1, we have had a very busy half term both online and at school. We have embarked upon our new topic 'A Knight's Tale' and have fully immersed ourselves within this Spring term theme. We have all been a little dragon-crazy and the children have enjoyed exploring the story of 'How to Catch a Dragon’; we have joined in with role play to catch our own dragons from the Roecroft Garden, designed our own dragon traps and planned and written our own instructions to help fellow Stotfold Knights catch their own dragons. In art, our Knight's Tale theme also featured heavily and the children explored, designed, created and evaluated their own coat of arms to represent their family. In Year 2, we have enjoyed taking part in various events. The children came to school in their pyjamas to show the importance of getting enough sleep to help with their learning. We also had a ‘Shine Bright, Wear Bright’ day to raise awareness for children’s mental health and wore bright colours and did some fun activities around looking after our minds. As a school we celebrated World Book Day online with the children wearing a costume of their favourite book character. In Year 2 we also took part in British Science Week and did some interesting activities such as making a wormery and creating 3D food chains. We had a Tudor Day to celebrate our Spring term topic of Kings and Queens where we created Tudor stained glass windows, designed a banquet and listened to music from that time. Finally, we celebrated Comic Relief, created Mother's Day cards and made Owl class in Year 2, shine bright, wear bright day Easter crafts. In the Summer term we are looking forward to starting our new topic, Our Amazing World, earning about oceans, the environment, our local area, plants and caring for the world.

News from

Pix Brook Academy

Welcome to Spring. This is a great time to be a resident of Stotfold, not only can we watch the world come back to life but finally pupils are able to return to school! As I write our pupils are in their lessons, meeting their classmates and working on their projects on what they learnt during those long cold months of lockdown in January and February. As a school we are mindful that about a quarter of the year has been missed and while great efforts at remote learning have been made by all concerned it is just not the same as being in school. We can now start again and I have been delighted by the positivity and simply happiness shown by pupils on returning to school. Schools need children and children need school!

We were able to finish out last week of lockdown with our Pix Brooks got talent show. This was no mean feat and while not all elements of the technology worked seamlessly we were able to see talents shared by those at home and in school. It was almost impossible to choose a winner with such a range of abilities on show. Ultimately it was just a great way of bringing our pupils together virtually and have a celebration of the exciting and diverse range of talents at the school. We now start to think about the possibilities for after Easter. Everyone is hoping that the Pandemic will continue to diminish and we are able to provide the range of experiences and opportunities we want. For us that will include an opportunity to have visits to the school, (we have yet to have our grand opening) and provide our parents with the chance to see where their children are working. We are hoping that the usual events of awards evenings, parent consultations, sports days and other events will not be pushed back by government guidelines. Everyone has everything crossed that the road map can be followed. For us in school it does feel like a new beginning in many ways and while we are all very aware that the guidelines must be followed we have become somewhat used to that. We look to the future with positivity and a sense of reflection. There have been and will be many consequences of this period on the lives of our children. It is important that we are mindful of that while not losing sight of the need to provide “normal experiences” for young people. Books must be read, maths must be done and playing with friends at breaktime are all part of the school experience. For PBA our priority continues to be to make sure school provides all those experiences in a calm and engaging way.

News from

Pippin Pre-School

We enjoyed welcoming back all our children last month and began March celebrating World Book Day. We wish to thank all our parents and staff for wearing fantastic costumes to celebrate the event.

We were delighted with the safe arrival of our ducklings!! They arrived in their incubabtor and hatched during their first 36 hours. The children held them and watched excitedly as they took their first swim, this has been a lovely experience for children (and staff) which we hope to do again next year. As in previous years the duckings will be rehomed in a small holding in Royston.

World Book Day was enjoyed by everyone!

We supported Comic Relief on 19th March, children came to Pippin wearing red. We wish to thank all our families and staff for supporting this event and helping us raise money for this fantastic charity. Unfortunately we are unable to our Holiday club at Easter due to ongoing Covid restrictions, we are hoping to reopen for the Summer Holidays and possibly Summer Half Term (1st June to 4th June ), more information to follow next month. Due to our charitible status we are now registered as one of Amazon’s supporters. Please visit smile.amazon and register Pippin Playgroup as your chosen charity. News from

Etonbury Academy

We have just received the fantastic news that our children can return to school. This brings a whole host of emotions, with excitement and relief at the top of the list. We also realise this is going to come with further challenges for our parents and children, and have a strong pastoral team on hand to help them transition back into school.

Mrs Elissa Hilsden, led the school for our successful STEM Week, promoting Science,Technology, Engineering and Maths subjects. We are fortunate to have such dedicated and experienced staff who committed their time to make it such a success. It was great to have so many of our Etonbury families joining in with the activities, providing learning away from technology too. Next year will be bigger and hopefully the children will be able to participate in school rather than at home. It was incredibly hard to decide on the winners of our STEM week, but congratulations to Xavier, Elouise and Riley in Year 7, Zarah, Mio and Emma in Year 8, and Jack, Rebecca and Harry in Year 9. Mr Matthew Pullinger, Etonbury Head of PE and Year 8, has been out running through the streets of Arlesey, Stotfold and Fairfield Park, training for an incredible 7 Marathons in 7 Days in support of Motor Neurone Disease which has sadly affected his family. If you see him, please give him a cheer as he continues to train for the big event in November. Mrs Alice Wagstaff-Sherwood, Head of English and High Attainer Lead, has been forming a partnership with Oxford University, Brilliant Club, The Scholars Programme and The Wadham Project to enhance our student’s learning experiences. We will be sharing more news about these in the weeks to come. Whilst the school has been quieter, we have taken the opportunity to keep improving and updating our traditional area of the school, which with all our new buildings is now just a small part of our school! Our children will be arriving to freshly decorated classrooms, new google chromebooks, interactive whiteboards and bright new furniture. Our bike sheds will also be having some new roofs with thanks to the support of Taylor Wimpey. We are sure that our community will benefit from all the work our fantastic site and technology teams have done to complete such a significant amount of work in these past few weeks. Mr Ian Evason, Principal, took on the PE Challenge, and received 150 likes on the Conditions treated include spinal Facebook page. He is really looking forward to playing football with the students again at l and extremity injuries, neck related unchtime. Did you know he played professionally in the USA before he went into teaching. headaches and sprains/strains. Mrs Emily Hardy, Etonbury Head of Music, made the press following her release of ‘The We are NOW OPEN BEST Song’ she wrote and directed with our Etonbury Juniors, Gothic Mede Academy and Our revised opening hours: Robert Bloomfield Academy children. You can see and hear this on our Facebook page. Tues: 2pm-7pm Wed: 10am-1pm

We can’t wait to have our children back in school, we have made lots of plans for day trips, Thursday: 3pm-7pm Friday: 10am - 1pm residential trips at home and abroad, events, fixtures, music and drama performances, achievement breaks with the Principal, careers days, celebration evenings and much more. Saturday: 10am-2pm We realise it has been a very difficult decision for those of you who have had to choose a school for your child without seeing it. So, if you are still considering a place for your child starting in September 2021 in years 5 to 9 we have a few spaces available and will be opening up for tours very soon. We can also help you with the admissions process. Call us on 01462 730391 or email vlockey@bestacademies.org.uk for more details and register your interest for a tour.

News from St Mary’s, The Parish Church of Stotfold & Fairfield

We are looking forward with joy and anticipation to the celebration of the Risen Christ’s victory over sin and death which we celebrate on Easter Day at 10.00am.

Due to the current restrictions on the size of congregations, this year you must reserve a place to attend on Easter Day. To sign up please email stotfoldparishchurch@gmail.com. If you book a place and later decide you are unable to attend, please notify the church as soon as possible so that another person can attend instead.

We will also be marking the National Day of Reflection on 23 March by opening the church from 9.00am to 6.00pm for private prayer. As part of this national initiative by Marie Curie to mark the anniversary of the first lockdown, we will be setting up a prayer wall outside the church on 21st March, which anyone can tie a ribbon and say a prayer of remembrance for those who have died, or a prayer of thanksgiving or praise. The ribbons will remain in place for a few weeks.

Our Holy Week Services (no booking required for these services): • Stations of the Cross, 6.00pm Sunday 28 March. • Tenebrae Service, a series of Bible readings and music to guide us as we reflect on the Passion Story, 7.30pm Wednesday 31 March. • Maundy Thursday Service, 7.30pm on 1 April. • Hour before the Cross, 2.00pm Good Friday • Service of Light, 7.30pm Saturday 3 April. Check our website for details and for online versions of services www.stotfoldchurch.org.uk. These times are subject to change. Please check our website, www.stotfoldchurch.org.ukm, and the notice board outside the church for updates. You are warmly welcomed to all our services but please first make your own assessment of whether or not to attend in person at this time. If you do attend, please wear a face covering throughout the service and follow the hygiene and social distancing guidelines which are displayed as you come into church. There are hand sanitiser stations at both entrances and a sidesperson will guide you to where you can sit to allow for social distancing. April Recipe- Braised Faggots & Onion Gravy with Trace Buggins, Head Chef at Mount Pleasant Golf Club Hello Stotfold

As I write, it’s a wet Wednesday and I’m thinking of what to do for dinner tonight. You would think with all my experience it’s a doddle to “knock something up” but no , I’ve still got kids that won’t eat this and won’t eat that, so it means a trawl through the folders, books and notepads for something we haven’t had for a while and more importantly something we can all enjoy.

So I’ve found it …………Beef faggots in onion gravy served on buttered crushed potatoes & wilted greens. Ok, kids don’t eat anything that “sounds “ funny or anything they haven’t had before, but change the name to …Meatballs …. And its another story . This is probably one of my oldest recipes and I would urge you to try with the liver included but if you feel you can’t the just replace with some pork ( this will stop them from drying out..This of course is not just a Wednesday dish…..but on a wet day you just need some comfort food.

Local chef Trace Buggins

Braised Faggots with Onion Gravy Onion Gravy: 450g (1lb) lean minced beef 15ml (1tbsp) sunflower oil 100g (4oz) lamb’s liver, finely chopped 2 large onions, peeled and finely chopped 100g (4oz) streaky bacon, finely chopped 15ml (1tbsp) plain or sauce flour 1 small onion, peeled and grated 300ml (½pint) ale 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 600ml (1pint) good, hot beef stock 15ml (1tbsp) freshly chopped parsley 10ml (2tsp) dried mixed herbs 10ml (2tsp) fresh thyme leaves 10ml (2tsp) freshly chopped sage Dash Worcestershire or brown sauce. 50g (2oz) fresh white or brown breadcrumbs 10ml (2tsp) English mustard Salt and pepper Prepare the onion gravy; heat the oil, add the onions and cook for 5 minutes. Add the flour and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Gradually stir in the ale, stock, Worcestershire or brown sauce, seasoning and dried mixed herbs. Reduce the heat and simmer. In a large bowl mix together the faggot ingredients and shape into 12 golf-size balls. Transfer to a 1.2L dish and pour over the gravy. Cover with foil and cook for 1½-2 hours. 15 minutes before the end of the cooking time, remove the foil and return to the oven. Take care and enjoy, Trace.

Stotfold Art Group News.. Welcome to our article for April.

We hope you are enjoying this small insight into our small and friendly Art group, based here in Stotfold.

This month we are enjoying the work of Stotfold Art Group member Michael Lincoln. Many hours of work go into Michael Lincoln's detailed and careful studies, reflecting his background in technical drawing. Although he lives in Luton, he has been an active member of the group for many years. Michaels subjects range from rock stars to steam engines to nature studies. Acrylic paints are his preferred medium, as seen in this colourful painting of Madonna..we think you will agree this is sensational. We sincerely hope that we shall be able to re-commence our art group in the not too distant future and once government guidelines allow. We welcome people of any ability to our group.

Latest news from from Beale Bros

Spring is in the air, the birds are singing and the future is looking far more hopeful.

We’re Back!!

Call in & see us from April 12th for a GREAT deal!

26

It’s been a tough time for our community, but it has been a pleasure as always to provide a valuable service locally. It has been some time since we wrote a blog, and a challenging one, especially since we have limited staff. Christmas saw us busier than ever, and due to the circumstances and current restriction there were some long queues outside the shop. Customers were cheerful and even said that they had the opportunity to talk to people they would not have normally met! January and February remained busy and we have welcomed some new customers during this time. We still strive as always to offer a wide range of quality meat and additional products and if you cannot see what you are looking for, we can usually get it for you. As yet we have not problems sourcing products from our suppliers, although sometimes things are a bit slower due to some companies furloughing staff, but hopefully this will improve as people get back to the workplace. We are busy in the background carrying out upgrades to the backrooms in the shop, and this will be ongoing for a while. It will create a better working space for preparation and production. Easter is just around the corner, and lamb is always a tasty treat at this time. Who knows the weather may even be kind to us and we will be able to fire up the BBQ quite soon. We are all looking forward to being able to meet up with our nearest and dearest in gardens at first, and to visit them in other parts of the country as the situation improves. As always we have lots of specials on offer in the shop, our Facebook page is the place to watch, where you can keep up to date with what is going on. ‘Like’ us and follow us to get the latest. We will be open from 8.30 until 1 p.m. on Good Friday 2nd April. 8.00 until 1 p.m. on Saturday 3rd April. Closed Sunday 4th and Easter Monday 5th. Normal opening times Tuesday 6th April.

STOTFOLD TOWN COUNCIL

The Greenacre Centre Valerian Way, Stotfold Hitchin, Herts, SG5 4HG Telephone number: 01462 730064 Email address: enquiries@stotfoldtowncouncil.gov.uk Website: www.stotfoldtowncouncil.gov.uk Office closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic You can still contact us by email on enquiries@stotfoldtowncouncil.gov.uk or by telephoning 01462 730064 Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm. An answer machine operates outside these hours.

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN Last year, we let you know about our plans to investigate a Neighbourhood Plan for Stotfold, drawn up in consultation with our residents. Unfortunately, we had to put these plans on hold due to the lockdown and social distancing restrictions in place. We are now looking to start this up again, once restrictions are eased to permit this.

What is a Neighbourhood Plan? Neighbourhood Planning gives communities direct power to develop a shared vision for their neighbourhood and shape the development and growth of their local area. They can choose where they want new homes, shops and offices to be built, have their say on what those new buildings should look like and what infrastructure should be provided, and grant planning permission for the new buildings they want to see go ahead. Neighbourhood Planning provides a powerful set of tools for local people to ensure that they get the right types of development for their community where the ambition of the neighbourhood is aligned with the strategic needs and priorities of the wider local area. A Neighbourhood Plan is a strategy for planners to use to enable them to consider planning applications on developments proposed in our area. It looks at three main conditions for sustainability: Economic Social Environmental Each development must meet a mix of the above conditions, as well as some other considerations by the planner during planning stages. Why is a Neighbourhood Plan important? A Neighbourhood Plan will enable us to consult residents to determine what type of dwellings, local services, amenities or provisions need to be included in our community, and what the environmental impact could be. Recent developments have left us with congested, overcrowded estates. The involvement of a Neighbourhood Plan can influence future developments by addressing the number of car spaces per property/wider roads with provision for bus stops off the highway. It can also be used to ensure our young community members are catered for, through provision of facilities such as a youth shelter, and other amenities which a developing community needs.

Can a Neighbourhood Plan stop development? In a word ‘NO’. A Neighbourhood Plan builds a set of guidance documents which are the blueprint to the pre-planning phase which all large developments must go through. We have to be mindful that development is inevitable but shaping and getting the best from these developments is what a Neighbourhood Plan is all about. What are we looking for? A steering group will be formed of local residents and town councillors with interest in the future of Stotfold and the development that is being progressed from the Government by Central Bedfordshire Council in their Local Plan. When social distancing restrictions permit, we will be holding an open event for people to come along and learn a bit more about Neighbourhood Plans and to express an interest in joining the steering group. A group of people are needed with applicable skills to enable a plan to be compiled. The group will need to be able to assist in reaching out to the community and extracting the wishes and aspirations of all of the community.

Young, teenage, families, retired, businesses, organisations, groups. Everyone who lives or works here has an opinion and understanding that opinion for good or bad is applicable. As previously mentioned, this Neighbourhood Plan isn’t about stopping development, it’s about getting the best from these developments. Ultimately, we need a group of around 10 people who can dedicate some time to produce a visionary plan which will enable future expansion to benefit and enhance the existing community, plus the evolving community that comes with development. While the steering group will be managed under the town council, the councillors have duties which take up a lot of their time which is why public participation is required. Although a small number of councillors will form part of the group. People with a background in planning, researchers and those keen to talk/listen to fellow neighbours are required. People who are good at extrapolation reports and information would be advantageous, report writers or copy writers. Remember, this isn’t a councillor role, this is about engaging and shaping a future for your community and using this powerful tool to shape our future town. Your opinion does matter. More information on our open event will be publicised soon, and in the meantime, if you are interested in joining the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group, please contact the Town Clerk, Mrs Kate Elliott-Turner on enquiries@stotfoldtowncouncil.gov.uk or 01462 730064. Local Businessman And Former Police Officer Stands For

PCC

Jas Parmar, a longstanding Clifton resident and Postmaster is the Liberal Democrat candidate for the 2021 Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections in Bedfordshire. Jas believes that his key attributes such as leadership, experience, trust, and a focus on public service are key credentials for being an effective PCC. Jas is the epitome of the people’s representative who promises to work in collaboration with the community and the police to ensure that policing are current, accountable, fair, measured, and responsive. Jas said “I am a dedicated local resident having lived in Clifton with my family for over 33 years. I have operated many successful businesses across Bedfordshire. As a former Metropolitan Police officer with 5 years’ experience, I understand the issues we all face.”

Jas has also served as a Bedford Borough Councillor and Non-Executive Director of East London (NHS) Foundation Trust. For the past four years, Jas has been a member of the Independent Advisory Group (IAG) to Bedfordshire Police; this includes representing community issues, supporting and at times scrutinising police and being a member of the recruitment panel. Jas Parmar candidate for 2021 PCC

Jas said, “As a victim of a recent serious gun crime, I understand the impact of crime on victims and will fully support the need to place victims at the centre of any policing and priorities”.

“Crime in rural Bedfordshire is of great concern to me and our residents and businesses. Despite Govt. promises, Bedfordshire Police remains grossly underfunded. The lack of police visibility and delayed response often leads to a loss of trust in the police. If elected, I will make visible community policing one of my top priorities. I believe that mobile police stations especially in rural communities will address many of the issues and bring the police and communities closer”.

Jas believes that true community safety can only be achieved by strong policies that aim to cut crime whilst delivering an equitable and efficient service, his aim is to focus on what really matters and to dedicate resources to the safety, health and welling of the people of Bedfordshire. Jas said “I believe that I have the right experience, attributes and qualities to undertake the role of Police and Crime Commissioner for Bedfordshire, and I am confident that I can meet the obligations of the office of the PCC and deliver a safer neighbourhood for ALL residents of Bedfordshire.

Although waiting FA approval, the decision has been taken that our leagues for the senior teams will be declared null and void for season 2020/21. Positive news however that football is likely to recommence for the EJA youth teams in April.

Please keep an eye on the club’s social media page as we intend to open for outside hospitality from 16th April following all the necessary Covid requirements.
