Welcome to April! Finally the nights are getting lighter as daylight saving time begins at 01:00am on Sunday 29th March. Bring on the longer days and better weather - one thing I know we are all looking forward to! We have had a fantastic March with probably our busiest month to date with the publication, welcoming new advertisers and speaking to so many people and organisations within our community. The Stotfold Town Council AGM took place at the beginning of March, with the annual Citizens Awards presented to three very deserving winners. You can find out more on pages 4 & 5 of this month’s issue. This month we are busy preparing to attend the Stotfold Mill Weekend, taking place on 9-10th May. In addition to this, there are also several events taking place in the community to mark the VE Day anniversary celebrations. One such event is an exhibition being held in the Stotfold Memorial Hall, displaying items relating to this time and providing a ‘walk down memory lane’ for those people that can recall it. If you have any items which you feel may be suitable to exhibit please contact Stotfold Town Council who would be delighted to hear from you. We welcome many new delivery volunteers this month as we expand our coverage and re-shuffle a few rounds. Welcome back to Carrie and welcome on board Lauryn, Vicky, Sarah, Ben, Jessica and Annabel! We are so thankful for your help and truly appreciate you giving up your time each month to help us keep up the huge task of delivering. A quick notice regarding the forthcoming Police Surgery is to the right of this text - please use the opportunity to voice your concerns. Until next month!
It’s easy to advertise in the Stotfold & Arlesey News Magazine. Simply give us a call or email us at stotfold.news@yahoo.co.uk and we’ll do the rest. Our deadline is always the 6th of every month preceding publication.

Citizens Award Winners 2019 As he steps back to be able to spend more time with his family, it was felt an appropriate time to recognise Simon’s commitment over so many years in helping to preserve this local and National piece of our local heritage. The final Citizens Award went to a lady most people will recognise, long serving Stotfold Brownie Leader Melanie Cheney. Once a member of Stotfold Parents Association, Melanie went on to train as a Brownie leader in 1980, becoming a Stotfold Leader in 1983. Countless weekly meetings, preparation for badges and the ever-popular camping trips have seen Melanie lead hundreds of young girls through their guiding journey. Although sometimes seeming to operate unnoticed in the background she is always willing to get involved to make a real difference within the Stotfold community. melanie Cheney pictured with Mayor Alan Cooper
Awards were presented to two of the winners at this year’s Town Council AGM. Certificates were handed to Simon and to Melanie by Stotfold Mayor Alan Cooper with MAN & A MEDIUM SIZED VAN Helen receiving her award at a later date.

Alan Cooper told the Stotfold News Magazine how thrilled he was to present these awards and to recognise the hours of hard work that individuals put into our local community.’ All three candidates this year were thoroughly deserving of their awards. It is always a pleasure to commend people on their service to Your friendly local delivery man Stotfold and to our community as a whole’. We look forward to picturing Helen with her award at a later date.

Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor, Walking around the footpaths of Stotfold recently I have seen the disappointing results of numerous building developments on our village and it made me wonder what is Stotfold actually getting out of this? Yes, I know houses of course but what about while all the construction is going on? The stoic residents of Stotfold put up with mud on the road, chewed up rights of way, traffic lights, congested roads, litter from building sites in hedgerows and the River Ivel, etc. Why can't developers be made to deliver community benefit up front rather than as a last tick box when they have made their money? Persimmon profits topped £1bn last year, Taylor Wimpey £811m and David Wilson £509m. All developers with schemes in Stotfold, It's about time the Town Council stood up for the residents and insisted on public benefits at the outset; delivery of public open space, play areas and off site road safety improvements could all be done and would make the build disruption all the more bearable. News from
Stotfold Watermill
SO MUCH TO LOOK FORWARD TO………………. The end of March saw our first open Sunday and it was good to once more welcome visitors. Hopefully many of them were families celebrating Mothering Sunday and treating their mothers to one of our delicious cream teas. This month we are open on the Sundays of 5th and 19th but there are a number of other events taking place. On 18th we have a Pastel Art Workshop, which is now fully booked, as is the Watercolour Workshop on 2nd May. On 25th April we have two workshops, Linoprint in the morning and Fused Glass in the afternoon. At the time of writing there remain places on the Linoprint session. Find out more at www.stotfoldmill.com. At 7.30pm on the evening of 25th April, we are hosting a Cheese (and Wine) Club organised by Gourmet Adventures of Baldock. Search under The Boogie Woogie Gals perform at the Mill www.gourmetadventures.co.uk or look up our website and social media pages – facebook, twitter and instagram. This is a new venture in Stotfold and we wish it every success. May sees our ever-successful weekend event in the field opposite the mill. Beginning on Friday May 8th at 7.00pm, which is the VE bank holiday, in the beer marquee we have ‘Live at the Mill’ featuring two very popular live music groups, Allergy and Delorean. Allergy is a high energy, talented and above all fun three-piece indie/rock covers band that spreads their love wherever they go. DeLorean play a blistering set, combining all of your favourites from the greatest periods of Rock History and giving you a night to remember! Tickets, which at £8.50 are selling out fast, can be obtained from our website. The change of the bank holiday date from Monday to Friday, to mark VE day, is going to cause some difficulty for our events team who will be spending the day setting up for the two days that follow. A great deal of work has to take place to set up the arena, marquees, fairground and trade stalls as well as preparing the car park and setting out signs on the local roads and so on. We very much hope that there will be plenty of volunteers come forward to help prepare for Stotfold’s biggest event of the year. If you can give an hour or two during the day to lend a hand, please let us know or just turn up, you will be very welcome. The Steam Fair and Country Show that follows on Saturday and Sunday (9th and 10th) features many of the usual attractions – displays by children from our local schools. arena thrills and stunts, helicopter flights, Wall of Death, fairground etc., etc. In addition, the new field layout will host an array of stalls, trade stands and food outlets as well as collections of vehicles from the war time years and earlier, alongside engines from the Saunder’s Steam Collection. The beer marquee, with its large selection of craft beers, will host a variety of music groups throughout the day from 11.30am and on Saturday evening, as a VE Day spectacular will stage acts by The Boogie Woogie Gals, a 1940's / 50's style close-harmony vocal group and The Swing Kid one of the most sought after swing singers in the UK. It promises to be a great evening and admission is entirely FREE! More details of the activities and entertainments throughout the weekend can be found at www.stotfoldmiil.com/steam-fair, where you can purchase admission tickets at 20% discount.

News from
Etonbury Academy. A fantastic and celebratory month at Etonbury, with the news of our GOOD Ofsted outcome in every category! The students, staff and governors have worked so hard over these two years to achieve this result, making the required changes, and we are very proud that our academy can now be openly recognised for the GOOD quality of education we provide to our community. These are just some of the OFSTED comments: • Leaders have acted quickly to improve the quality of education provision at Key Stage 2. Together with a new primary leader, there are now dedicated specialist primary teachers for reading, writing and mathematics • Leaders from the school and the Trust have taken effective action to address the areas for improvement outlined in the previous inspection report. • Leaders have high expectations for pupils’ behaviour – the behaviour and attitudes of pupils is good • All staff want pupils to be successful • Pupils are encouraged to achieve good examination results and be active citizens • Leaders have designed a curriculum that is ambitious for all pupils • Curriculum leaders have designed and planned the curriculum well in all subjects • Pupils have access to a wide range of extra-curricular activities • Pupils and staff have positive working relationships. We are looking forward to building on this success, with our established leadership and staffing teams, facilities and practices all now embedded. We provide our community with the school that offers stability and continuity for our children, surrounded by a secure environment for them to be the BEST that they can be, aim higher, care, and be respectful…the ETAWay. Amongst our OFSTED visit, it’s been a busy one . We have had local and national businesses continuing to support us with Year 11 interviews and helping them towards their future steps, an author has been in developing our students creative writing skills, World Book Day welcomed Dumbledore aka Mrs Whittle , a record breaking week for the number of students receiving praise texts, and Mr Evason, our Principal, running Boxfit sessions with tremendous attendance! PE continue to have students excelling in indoor hockey, cross country, girls rugby, archery, badminton and table tennis to name a few. Don’t forget to see our PE ‘Legends of the Week’ on our Twitter page. We are incredibly fortunate at Etonbury to have so much voluntary support including Modern Foreign Language helpers, counsellors and trip helpers. We also have students who volunteer their own time to help litter pick, run clubs with our teachers and join panels to interview new staff and critic our catering to make improvements. Not forgetting our Governing body who invest so much time in our school, attending meetings, walkarounds, training and importantly challenge the direction of our school. This month our Governors have been in for Finance and Performance Committee meetings. A big thank you to all our Volunteers! If you are still considering your child joining us in September 2020, whether in Year 5 or Year 9, and would like a tour of our school, we have a limited number of places still available, so please do get in touch on 01462 730391 to arrange. www.etonbury.org.uk

Pix Brook Academy This half term started with a bang! On Tuesday, we had a visit from Lou Treleaven, a children’s author. She provided a fantastic opportunity for the pupils to hear about and work on fiction writing. We were very lucky to have Lou with us all day along with Amy Morris, Director of English for BEST, Alison Wilshaw, Director of Education for BEST and Alex Blink-Horn, an SLE in English from SWA. A really great way to start the term. We were fortunate in that the rain held off for our sponsored walk/run in aid of the NSPCC. Pupils took the opportunity to raise money in a variety of ways. We had a non-uniform day and asked pupils to get sponsorship for the number of laps around the 4G pitch. Pupils raised over £1,000, a superb effort for a worthy cause. The following day we were off to Duxford Air Museum. Again, this was a fantastic learning experience. Not only did we look at the artefacts from the Second World War, we also had the opportunity to ask questions and listen to two veterans from the forces -a genuinely moving experience. We finished the first week back with an assembly delivered by the Local Authority on road safety. This is a serious matter and one that the pupils understand is potentially life-saving. As a school we will be appointing junior road safety officers to act as advocates for road safety and taking advantage of the Local Authority’s support in this area. World Book Day was Thursday 5th March, during the day the children took part in a range of activities linked to World Book Day.A great day was had by all. The next few weeks will continue to be extremely busy. I would like to take this opportunity to wish Miss Broadbent best wishes for the safe arrival of her baby. We are extremely fortunate to have her lessons covered by Miss Aksoy until Easter, when Mr Brooks will be joining the school and taking the class. Mr Brooks will be continuing with us in September as Head of Humanities. Coming up, we also have the full range of activities including, Sport Relief, British Science Week, the Easter concert at St Mary’s and a number of other events related to the development of the school. I would like to take this opportunity to thank parents for their support of the school. There is a huge amount to be done in our development as a school but with your support we are making great progress. Mr Steve Adams - Principal

Poppies Nursery Welcome to our latest news! During March we have been looking at books, coinciding with world book day! We were very pleased to have a local author visit us at both our nurseries. Her name is Gemma Keir and she has written a series of books ‘The abilities in me’ which relate to a wide variety of additional needs children may have or encounter. With her partner, Max, they had the children incredibly engaged in their stories. Gemma can be found at www.theabilitiesinme.com and we highly recommend her series of books. A big Thankyou to Gemma and Max, with their friend Kelsey, for a lovely morning!
Author Gemma Keir and her family
We also enjoyed a visit from ‘Hartbeeps’ where Jodi engaged children in exercise, music and fun! It was a pleasure to see how much they enjoyed it, especially the sequinned parachute -Thanks to Jodi for sharing her time with us. We continue to use our ‘forest school’ Spinneys and children are loving watching the birds busily gathering bits for nests! Our before and after school clubs (Poppyfields only) are loving the warmer days where they are able to use our garden and the Fairfield school playground and field! Football is as ever a firm favourite, coupled with craft activities which will be based on Easter and spring!

Roecroft Lower School. March is always a very active month in schools, celebrating World Book Day and Sports Relief. National Science Week was a huge success - we welcomed a number of parents in to school, they spoke to children about their science careers and how science plays a huge part in the world around us. This all helps to encourage children’s growing interest, skills and knowledge for the future. Each month we rotate news from our different key stages, this month we have an Year 1 children enjoying update from our Key Stage 1 team: Over the Spring Term, both Years 1 and 2 have their Animal Workshop. been very busy with lots of exciting learning and school events. Year 1 have moved onto the topic 'A Knight's Tale', which has been full of prince, princess and dragon fun! We had a history based topic day, in which we explored the events of the Battle of Hastings through the Bayeaux Tapestry. We each made a section with different art media which we then pieced together to show the famous battle. We have also been visited by an Animal Workshop, which was a super treat for everyone. We were able to hold a variety of animals, such as a millipede, a tree frog, a Chinese water dragon, a guinea pig and a rabbit - some of us were fearless and even held a python! As the Spring Term continues, Year 1 will also be rehearsing our 'Easter Eggstravaganza' Spring Show. We look forward to joining in with lots of upbeat songs, jokes and some groovy dances! Year 2 have moved on to the topic ‘Kings and Queens’. The children have loved learning about past and present Royal Families. We have completed lots of interesting learning about Elizabeth II and The Royal Family. Each child has used their artistic skills to draw and paint real life portraits of Queen Elizabeth. In Food Technology we have put our culinary skills to the test by making an afternoon tea for the Queen which consisted of cheese and tomato sandwiches, lemonade and sweet treats. In History we have enjoyed learning about past Kings and Queens such as Queen Victoria and Henry VIII. We have had fun doing live debates, making timelines, designing a Royal banquet and finding out historical facts. As the Spring Term continues, we look forward to ‘History Off the Page’ leading our fun Tudor Day. Best Wishes, Mrs Cross

Fairfield Park Lower School The whole school enjoyed dressing up for World Book Day last month. The children (and staff!) loved coming into school dressed in their pyjamas and bringing in their favourite book, continuing this year’s theme of sharing a story. We are delighted to announce that we will be displaying a "wild home" at the RHS Hampton Court Flower Festival this July! Following on from our Eco Week homework to design a "wild home" Brodie's design was chosen as our entry in the RHS competition. It has been accepted and now we will begin making "The Bug Helta Skelta", with help from Brodie, staff and pupils. This fabulous design will be displayed at the show, you can buy tickets now on the RHS website. As well as the honour of showing at the festival, there is the opportunity to win prizes for the school if the public vote for our design! Please go along to support us if you can. Well done, Brodie!

During the first half of the Spring Term, the Year 2 children’s learning was based around ‘Ice Worlds’. For our WOW day children came in dressed as Arctic explorers. They carried out research about polar animals then presented their own 'Frozen Planet' programme using green screens to record their own film. Later on they thought about the team working skills they would need as explorers and completed outdoor challenges where they needed to show their co-operation. After the Easter break we have Grandparents lunch for reception children to look forward to and a Quads Kids sporting event. Don’t forget, Monday 20th April is an inset day and we look forward to welcoming the children back for the start of the Summer Term on Tuesday 21st April. - Our Value of the Term: Friendship Fairfield Park Lower School Dickens Boulevard & Ruskin Drive E: office@fairfieldparklower.uk T: 01462 830000

St Mary’s CE Academy Firstly, can we mention our Creative Arts week, which was held in February. It went very well and the children really enjoyed a range of activities including arts and crafts, dancing, sporting activities and cooking to name a few! During March we celebrated World Book Day where the children swapped books and enjoyed themed activities. There were also the ever popular annual Sponsored Bounce and Sport Relief events which raised money for good causes. Our Year 3 children took part in the fascinating Bedford Faith Tour and our Year 4s thoroughly enjoyed their residential trip to Rock UK where much fun and excitement was experienced by all! Due to the Easter break, April is a relatively quiet month for us, our last day of term before the Easter break will be Friday 3rd April with all of the children participating in an uplifting Easter Service on Thursday 2nd April. Following the Easter Holidays the children will return to school on Monday 20th April and then they will have the planned whole school day trip to Woburn Safari Park to look forward to on Tuesday 28th April.
Stotfold Festival Week Bringing the community together to raise funds for good causes Friday 12th to Sunday 21st June 2020 Preparations are well underway for Stotfold Festival Week, which culminates in the Festival Fete on Saturday 20th June held this year at Roecroft Lower School. Fraud Warning For Local Residents. Bedfordshire Police is issuing a fraud warning after a number of local residents fell victim to a scam, with one losing their entire life savings. Action Fraud has reported that the scam was first reported in October 2019 and since has costed the victims more than £1 million. The scam is carried out by phone call, with the victim receiving an automated phone message that they have been charged for an Amazon Prime subscription. They are subsequently instructed to ‘press 1’ to cancel the transaction. When they do this, they are directed to a fraudster posing as an Amazon customer service representative. The fraudster advises the victim that their subscription was purchased fraudulently and that remote access to their computer is required in order to fix a security flaw that will prevent it from reoccurring. The unsuspecting victim then downloads software which grants the scammers remote access to their computer, including personal and financial information. Other variants of the crime involve fraudsters stating that the recipient is eligible for a refund for an unauthorised transaction on their Amazon account. Bedfordshire Police would like to advise all residents to stay alert to this sophisticated scam and follow Action Fraud advice to stay safe. Personal information - always question uninvited approaches in case it’s a scam. Instead, contact the company directly using a known email or phone number. Try using a different phone line if possible or wait for a period of time as scammers have a way to stay on the line. Stay in control - have the confidence to refuse unusual requests for personal or financial information. It’s easy to feel embarrassed when faced with unexpected or complex conversations. But it’s fine to stop the discussion if you do not feel in control of it. Remote access - never install any software or visit a website as a result of a cold call. Unsolicited requests for remote access to your computer should always raise a red flag. Bedfordshire Police Cyber Security Advisor Sean O’Neil said: “We would like to ask our residents to remain vigilant to any unsolicited calls. Make sure that you share this advice with your friends and family “Remember to always protect your personal information and never grant remote access to your computer or phone to anyone who contacts you first.” Remember, if you have been a victim of fraud or cyber crime, report it to Action Fraud online 0300 123 2040

News from Stotfold Football Club
Well what a start in our new home a crowd of 644 and a victory 5-3 over local neighbours Shefford and Campton. A great day for the club and the support from the community was very much appreciated. The month of February saw four wins and one draw for the first team. The Development team won their only two fixtures and the U18’s won one and lost one of their only fixtures in February. Once again ,the stormy weather took its toll. We are now starting to find our feet in our new stadium and the larger facility requires greater demands on our loyal committee members. We would very much welcome anyone who is willing to offer a few hours of their time to help us on match days manning the turnstiles, stewarding or serving teas. If you feel that you can help, please contact us on the email address below. The club would welcome your support for all three teams as we reach the business end of the season. Come on you Eagles! I know many of you have been asking after him and have been missing seeing him in the shop. Spring lamb is very much the meat of the season and is always a favourite for Easter.
