For those people that have taken the time to write in, phone in or contribute in any way we are so very grateful. Huge thanks also to our regular contributors, our local schools, churches and organisations that get hounded by us every month for their news you all do a wonderful job in keeping our readers in touch with everything that goes on. Thank you.
This month we welcome five new volunteers to help us with our deliveries. Thank you Rachel for your help on the Greenacres Estate over the last few years - we are pleased to welcome Fiona, Jenny, Lindsay, Sue and Amanda to our team. We are so fortunate to now have an established delivery person helping us out with the new homes in Fairfield Gardens and we welcome our new readers from these roads and hope you enjoy receiving your copy of the magazine each month. Our 95 person strong team of volunteers are all so wonderful in helping us with the task of delivering - If you happen to catch your delivery person out and about this November please thank them for helping us continue to do such a great job. Speaking of unsung heroes have you nominated anyone for this year’s Christmas Hero as yet? We are delighted to bring the Christmas Hero to you once again for 2018. In association with Satchells Estate Agents this is such a positive end to the year and we love reading all of the nominations as they come in. It has been our busiest year to date with nominations and we look forward to finding out who this year’s winner will be when the entries are judged after the deadline of December 1st. You still have time to nominate somebody that you feel has really gone the extra mile for you this year...see page 4 for further details.

£5,000 Donation to the Wanderbus Community Bus Service Stephanie Kirby and Clive Lester (pictured right) were delighted to receive a cheque for £5,000 from Bedfordshire Freemasons on behalf of Whitbread Wanderbus Ltd towards the cost of a replacement second Community Bus. Clive, one of the 22 volunteers, who run the Community Wanderbus, told us, “We would like to thank Bedfordshire Freemasons for their generous donation towards the purchase of this bus, which serves the residents of some 12 villages in Central Bedfordshire and helps fill the gaps left by traditional bus operators. The Community Wanderbus provides a much-needed link to local towns and villages for young and old residents, who do not have they own transport. He continued, Wanderbus services also provides residents, who are elderly and alone, with the opportunity to meet other residents and helps foster a Community Spirit”. Tony Henderson (centre) the leader of Bedfordshire Freemasons told us, “Sadly many people in later life find themselves alone. As Clive noted, the service provided by the Wanderbus, helps them to get out and stops them feeling alone and isolated. The Masonic Charitable Foundation Charity, funded solely by Freemasons - has recently donated £1M to Age UK to fund a programme to helping older people feel less lonely and isolated.

Grateful thanks to all who donated jumble, the willing helpers, the Stotfold News Magazine, Satchells Estate Agents and John McBurney for their valuable assistance with help in advertising the event. Thanks also to the many customers and the great help provided by Dennisons House and Garden Clearance. Thank you everyone,

Dear Joanne,
Our boiler recently broke and we called Greg from GSP Plumbing and Heating after finding his details in the Stotfold News Magazine. This turned out to be the best call I could have made. As we were without heating and hot water Greg rearranged other appointments to fit us in quickly. He worked really hard to get a new boiler installed for us, not only was he a really nice person but worked very professionally to an exceptional standard.
Dear Joanne -
Thank you for publishing my previous letters and birthday requests - we love the magazine - you do very well. This is another thank you for your letter page.
With many thanks for all the assistance received on FRIDAY 2nd NOVEMBER when my husband ERIC had a fall on the High Street Crossing. To the two ladies who helped him up, checked him over and bought his newspaper at the Co-op. To Gemma and her staff at 'Hair by Philip' who seated him, gave him a cup of tea & phoned me. To the lady named Jean who chatted and calmed him down in the aalon before having her hair done.
He was bruised & shaken, but OK.
You all know who you are and have my grateful thanks. Sincerely
Jennifer Legate.
I would have no hesitation in recommending him and will certainly use him again. Thank you Greg and thank you too to Stotfold Magazine. Jackie Jennings.
Editors Note: We love receiving letters like this. Well done GSP for continuing to fly the flag for great local businesses!

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,
I'm writing to say what a wonderful time I had last Saturday when the cubs entertained many members of the Stotfold Good Neighbour Group. The cubs hosted a Bingo afternoon with tea and cakes that some of them had made. One helpful young cub helped me spot my Bingo numbers as my eyesight is not very good and another helped a friend who could not hear so well. They were all so nice and friendly and helpful. We all had a good time, lots of fun on a dull winter day, it was really nice to get out and meet up with a few other folk. Thank you so much to the Cub leaders for all their organisation and the Good Neighbour Group for transporting us all. Good Neighbour Client
Dear Joanne, While I agree with much of the lengthy comment by the resident of The Coppens, I must object to the paragraph where he suggests that the housing developments causing some of these problems are "encouraged, no doubt by The Stotfold Town Council and objected to by the residents".
Should he and other residents take closer note of the activities of the Town Council by either attending relevant meetings or reading the published minutes then it would become evident that the Town Council object regularly to many proposed developments on the basis that our 'infrastructure' cannot support them and provide a 'sustainable' environment for our residents. These comments are sent in to Central Bedfordshire Council for ALL Stotfold planning applications received and only in the minority of cases do we witness local residents airing their written objections to us or CBC for their planning officers and 'Development Committee' to consider. Residents should consider supporting the Town Council in their efforts against the constant stream of opportunistic planning applications rather than merely blame them for results they actually have no control over.
On a personal basis, as a resident for over 66 years and from a family who have lived in Stotfold for over 200 years, I find it difficult to describe how much 'my' village has been ravaged by developments. Noticeably from the 1960's when overflow from the new towns began to influence us and multiple developments such as The Coppens devoured our larger gardens and open spaces while local employment, shops and other services progressively become less. More support by residents rather than blame is required along with acceptance that many of the problems described are caused by the selfish attitude of some of our residents with little care for the community at large.
Cllr. Alan Cooper - Stotfold Mayor
www.stotfoldnews.co.uk
Dear Editor,
As a Stotfold resident for over 42 years, I`ve witnessed the development of Fairfield Park, Greenacres, Taylors Road and every spare corner of land from peoples back gardens to the field alongside St Mary`s School in Rook Tree Lane. I`m sure I`ll also witness the development of an additional 160 or more houses to be built along The Arlesey Road. We`ll soon require a `bypass for the existing bypass, as eventually all the land between Arlesey Road and the existing bypass succumbs to the developers bulldozers.
These developments, whilst encouraged, no doubt by The Stotfold Town Council and objected to by the residents has led to an additional two thousand vehicles or more leaving and entering the town. This doesn`t include the delivery vans and lorries that constantly stream in and out of Stotfold. Living in The Coppens, I sometimes need to go out at around 08.00am. From Groveland Road to the Norton Road roundabout is approximately two hundred yards and can take all of 15 minutes on a bad day. The constant flow of traffic coming down the bypass and out of Greenacres simply prevents more than one car at a time entering the roundabout coming out of Stotfold. Not for the faint hearted!
Accepting that this is progress and I should just get on with it reminds me of a telephone survey carried out by Beds Central Council when it was suggested I should use public transport instead of my car when going to play golf at Beadlow Manor. Apparently, this will reduce congestion and pollution. I tried working out how many bus changes I should have to make, the duration of the journey and how long in miles the journey would be. Not to mention I would need to carry a golf bag, trolley and change of clothes. The lady then suggested I catch a taxi home ...... der! Despite the annoyance of all the additional traffic the thing that really gets under my skin is the number of drivers (cars, vans and even motorbikes) who use Stotfold as a `Public Car Park`. The Coppens is a cul-de-sac where parking is at a premium just for the residents, however, every weekday morning, non resident cars are being parked in every available space, at the side of the road and on corners. The drivers and passengers of these vehicles are then picked up in another car or van and off they go, returning around 6.00pm. The Steam Fair also brings a number of non residential parkers to The Coppens. Although not popular with some, perhaps it`s time for the council to consider residential parking permits at certain times of the day to prevent this ever increasing problem.Oh, and by the way, `Double Yellow Lines` are not the answer! Resident of The Coppens.

News from
Stotfold Watermill
A GREAT END TO THE YEAR!
At the time of writing this report we have finally closed the mill door to weekend visitors for the year. Whilst our teams of volunteers will continue to work in the mill during the winter months, maintaining the machinery and preparing for new events and activities when we re-open in March, we feel it is too cold and damp to comfortably accommodate visitors. What a fantastic last day it was! After the disappointment of that very wet Sunday at the Working Steam Weekend earlier in month, which meant that we sadly earned nothing to add to our funds needed to maintaining the Mill, it was great to be able to record the greatest number of Sunday afternoon visitors this year, beating by 4 the number who came on one of those brilliant sunny days back in June. There are several reasons why such large numbers turned out on a very chilly afternoon, with a brisk, cold wind negating any warmth from a late Autumnal sun. Firstly, we had the Archive team’s exhibition, commemorating the end of World War I, one hundred years ago. Visitors not only were able to watch a video showing the harrowing conditions that Stotfold’s young men had to face, including those who sadly failed to return home and whose names are recorded on the war memorial, but they were also able to read how the news of the Armistice reached the town and was celebrated with the rest of the nation. Some visitors came along to stock up for the winter with Stotfold mill’s famous plain rolled oats, whilst others were taking a last opportunity to enjoy a delicious cream tea in Randalls Tea room, - although it was an afternoon when a steaming bowl of mill porridge might have been as welcome! For anyone who missed out we can report that we have re-stocked Beale Bros Butchers in Regent Street with oats as well as flour and will be keeping them supplied throughout the winter. Jordans mill at Biggleswade also sells our products.
The biggest delight of the day was to welcome back 8-year old Amanda Ellis from Stotfold, who was this year’s winner of the Count the Rats and Mice Competition. Amanda, shown in the photograph above with miller Ray Kilby holding part of her prize, had a training lesson in milling. After setting the millstones, she signalled the upper floors and started the waterwheel. When she had produced a sack (about 15kg) of flour, she closed down the machinery again before enjoying a cream tea with her parents. We look forward to seeing Amanda and all our other visitors back again next March when we re-open for 2019.
Meanwhile teams will be busily planning and preparing for next year’s events. The Major Events team, who have booked a great list of attractions for the Steam Fair and Country Show on 11th/12th May, are inviting any owners of vintage, veteran or classic cars who are prepared to put them on display during the weekend to contact the mill by e-mail to SimonBarrow@stotfoldmill.com.
Until we see you again in 2019, our thanks to all for your support this year and our best wishes for a very enjoyable Christmas and Happy New Year. If you are looking for a resolution, why not make it to volunteer a little of your time to joining one of our teams at Stotfold Mill. Find out more at www.stotfoldmill.com/volunteer.

News from
St Mary’s Academy.
Christmas really is one of the best times of year to be working in a School. With a little help from our friends, the first weekend in December will be spent putting up our Christmas trees so when the children come in on Monday 3rd December, the school will be transformed. The look on their faces when they see the trees, Nativity scene and classroom decorations is wonderful.
Starting on Friday 30th November from 5.00pm to 7.30pm, we have our St Mary’s School Association Winter Wonderland extravaganza – everyone is welcome and entry is free! Our choir are busy rehearsing for their Christmas performances planned for the above Winter Wonderland event, the Stotfold Christmas Lights Switch-on evening on Saturday 1st December as well as the Stotfold Community Christmas Concert to be held on Sunday 16th December at 4.00pm. Our children will also be practising for our Christmas Concerts to be presented on Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th December. It’s amazing what the staff and children can achieve with just a couple of weeks practise. We never charge entry for concerts but we will be supporting The Young Epilepsy Charity this year with voluntary donations collected at the end of each performance. As is now tradition in the last week of term, we will have Christmas Dinner and Class Parties on Tuesday 18th December. To round the afternoon off we have a special Christmas Theatre visiting school. The children should thoroughly enjoy the festive fun! Our Christmas Service will also be held at St Mary’s Church on Wednesday 19th, so look out for our procession on our way to Church! This is always a lovely way to end the term. Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped or supported the work of our school again this year. A great many people and organisations are involved with us and this is very much appreciated. Thank you. From all of us at St Mary’s, we would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year. See you all back at school on Thursday 3rd January 2019!

Fairfield Lower School The festive season is in full swing here at Fairfield Park. School production rehearsals are well under way and we look forward to seeing our parents at one of the events this month. This half term we opened the doors to 77 children at our Ruskin Drive School site after the October break, and are delighted to have both school sites fully operational. This is a very exciting time for us all! A group of KS2 children have taken part in a Tag Rugby event ran by Redborne School Sports Partnership at Samuel Whitbread Academy in November. The children enjoyed taking part very much and were awarded a respect award at the event.
The childrens Christmas cards all look beautiful and will be sent home to parents this month. We are also looking forward to our whole school Christmas dinner on Monday 17th December which is also Christmas jumper day at Fairfield Park. We hope you have a peaceful and relaxing Xmas and an enjoyable New Year. Quote of the term: Live life to the fullest, and focus on the positive. Matt Cameron Value of the month: Independence

Roecroft Lower School. What an incredibly quick term Autumn has been. By the time you read this we will be getting ready to run our Christmas productions and festive celebrations in school. It is hard to believe that I have been in post for almost four months and that our Reception children have finished their first full term at ‘big’ school. The term has been very busy, packed with learning and fun. An update from the Key Stage 1 Team: In Year 1, we have been studying the topic of toys through ‘A Toy Story’ and were lucky enough to be visited by some of our parents who worked with the children on collage, creative writing and puppetry. Special thank you to Mrs Duggan, Mrs Farnsworth and Miss Farrell for their help with our activities.
In Year 2, we launched our ‘Moving Along’ topic with a space day and have spent the first half term learning all about Neil Armstrong, Tim Peake and the solar system. This half term we are focusing on transport and celebrated a London transport day in school where we looked at how transport has changed over the years. In November we have been thinking about the values of Peace and Tolerance which links beautifully to this exceptional centenary year where we say thank you to all who served, sacrificed and changed our world during the First World War. This month, we also celebrated thirty-one years of Black History Month by having a lunch based on food inspired by people of black origin. The children also enjoyed a morning full of activities relating to the contributions that black people have made to society over the years. Our Reception children enjoyed listening and playing along to African drum music, whilst Year 1 learnt about the Windrush boat and how it travelled all the way from the Caribbean to England. In Year 2, we learnt about engineers and sports personalities such as Lewis Hamilton, Mo Farah and Katherine Johnson. Year 3 enjoyed listening to and creating their own traditional tales based on Anansi the Spider whilst Year 4 looked at civil rights leaders, together with British politicians. The children as well as the adults enjoyed a fun-filled morning of activities. Our Open Evening was a hive of activity and we enjoyed welcoming prospective, new and current families into the school. We often refer to our team and children as the ‘Roecroft family’, and we hope you felt this on the night and enjoyed your time with us. We have also been raising money and awareness for charity this month. Including our very successful ‘Love in a Box’ appeal, the project allows our children to fill shoeboxes with gifts and essential items for children in Eastern Europe who would not normally receive a Christmas present. Each year our families show wonderful compassion and thoughtfulness, and we normally collect well over 100 beautifully packed and wrapped boxes.
Children in Need took place just over a week ago, in school we enjoyed a morning of activities and invited our children’s Grandparents to join in with the classroom fun! The children came dressed as their hobby or interest as we followed the theme of ‘Do Your Thing’ this year. They contributed cakes to be sold to our Grandparents in the hall as they enjoyed a cup of tea and some songs performed by our choir. In addition, we marked 100 years since World War 1 in school with our Remembrance Assembly taking place on the Friday with the support of the Royal British Legion. Thank you for your time and for talking to our children. We also took part in an art project for the community which was displayed at Chicksands for the community to see. So, to everybody that baked a cake, gave a pound or wore a silly costume for the day - THANK YOU! Over this term we have been focusing on the values of Understanding, Unity, Peace, Tolerance, Understanding and Happiness.
From the team at Roecroft we wish you a very relaxing and fun filled Christmas break. Cheers! To a Happy and prosperous New Year. See you all in 2019!
