From the Editor Welcome to our Christmas issue! What a year! As I write this, we have just been given a tiny glimmer of hope from the government that normality could be on the (somewhat distant) horizon. It’s the small glimmer of hope that we must all focus on as we look forward to 2021 with a certain degree of optimism. 2020 certainly has challenged us all.

December

For the magazine, 2020 raised it’s own questions such as whether we should actually publish our magazines and whether we could physically deliver. Our printers closed for a certain amount of time and many of our wonderful helpers self isolated. Thankfully we chose to continue online for a couple of months meaning we were still able to maintain continuity and slowly we began to re-build and recover. On a personal level I would like to use the Editor’s column this month to thank each and every person that supported us during this challenging time. To our loyal advertisers that continued with their adverts even though they were unable to work, to our printers who pulled out all the stops to ensure our time publishing online was kept to a minimum, to our fabulous readers who sent us so many messages of support and last but by no means least, to our wonderful, wonderful, delivery volunteers who tirelessly endeavoured to go out and deliver their Stotfold Magazines through a most uncertain time. All 107 of you are all such a fantastic support to the magazine and to the community your determination to ‘keep calm and carry on’ was inspiring. On a separate note, we thank both Peter and Angela Hollingsworth and Sarah Church this month as they hang up their delivery bags after a very long time helping us deliver in both Hitchin Road and Arlesey Road and welcome Carolyn and Katie to our team for 2021. You will notice that we have put our popular new feature ‘Word On The Street’ on hold for December as we had so much other news to include. We look forward to welcoming this back for Jan. All that remains is to wish you all a peaceful, happy and most importantly HEALTHY December. My thanks once again to all of you for your amazing support!

Joanne.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, STOTFOLD ANGELS Stotfold Angels Return! – Watch out from December 12th as knitted angels will be appearing around the streets of Stotfold. If you find one please take it home to enjoy and If you should find more than one, please pass it on to someone else to share the joy of Christmas. Many thanks St. Mary’s Social & Fundraising Committee.

Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

Stotfold Garden Club. On behalf of the Committee and myself, may we wish you all a safe, happy and restful Christmas and may the New Year bring us fresh hope for a release from the Covid nightmare. As you may have gathered, the December party plus entertainer has been cancelled. I do have things in place for next year but, without the AGM in January, any outing bookings are almost impossible. We did think that we could book two coaches for 30 people each and spread the cost via club funds. However, with the ‘rule of six’ we are out of luck on that score! We could hold a virtual AGM but I don’t know how many could link in, even if they knew how. So, with the Committee’s agreement, I will issue an AGM style update, together with the outline plan for 2021. This will be sent via email to those members who are on my list and by snail mail to those who are not. All those who had booked for the two cancelled trips do, of course, have first call on any trips we manage to arrange. The money is all in the account and I have all the details of those who have paid. Kind regards, stay safe and enjoy the coming festive season as best as you can.

The Eleemosynary Charity of William Field. Applications are invited from both individuals and local voluntary organisations for a grant that will directly benefit a resident or residents in the ecclesiastical parish of Stotfold, which includes Fairfield. Application forms can be obtained by email from the Clerk to the Trustees jbillson@virginmedia.com or from 17 Pix Road, Stotfold, Hitchin, Herts. SG5 4HY.

Completed applications to be returned by 31st December 2020 at the latest.

Peter. stotfoldgc@gmail.com / Telephone 01462 834854 Dear Editor, Due to the present Covid restrictions, Stotfold Good Neighbour Group were not able to hold their usual coffee morning in aid of the Macmillan Cancer Support on the 29th September. However, to try to compensate, Jo Martin and the pupils of The Academy of Central Bedfordshire baked a variety of cakes, put them in boxes and delivered them to Stotfold Memorial Hall on the 9th October so that we could distribute them to our clients at the Chair Based Exercise Classes. Everyone at the classes gave generous donations to the charity totaling £220. Our grateful thanks go to Jo and the pupils who helped to make all this possible. We would also like to thank Stotfold Council for letting us re-start our Chair Based Exercise Classes (whilst complying with all the guidelines and recommendations). These classes are so important to our clients who so look forward to them, although social distancing, helping them to continue in good physical and mental health. We hope to continue these activities for as long as we can during this very difficult time. Christine Bunting on behalf of SGNG

Give A Child A

Gift This Christmas

This year more than ever, many local families are in need of essentials to survive day to day, a situation exasperated for many with the repercussions bought on by lock down and Covid 19. Many families will struggle with providing for the basic necessities, Christmas for many will seem like an almost impossible task. How can you help?

Stotfold Salvation Army are asking for help with their ‘Give a Gift’ appeal. In essence, the public are asked to help in different ways in order to help a local child receive a gift this Christmas time. The three main ways of donating a gift are detailed to the right of this article with full social distancing measures taken well into consideration. A survey by Britain’s largest food bank network has warned that UK destitution rates will double by Christmas, alongside an explosion in demand for charity food. Sadly, they predict that at least 670,000 extra people will become destitute in the last three months of the year – a level of poverty that leaves them unable to meet basic food, shelter or clothing needs. You can help ease the strain by making at least one child’s Christmas a much happier one.

Unwrapped gifts can be dropped to the Stotfold Slvation Army Church on both Saturday 28th November and Saturday 5th December. If you are able to help, please do think about ‘Giving a Gift’ this Christmas...

A Fresh New Look For

Stotfold Mill

Local man Paul Robinson certainly needed a head for heights after being commissioned to undertake the job of repainting the outside of Stotfold Mill. Paul told the Stotfold News Magazine ’It was wonderful to have been asked to take on this job. To see the difference the new paint has made to one of the most historic buildings in Stotfold has been an absolute pleasure.’

He continued, ‘Thank you to everyone that stopped by to chat to me over the last few weeks and to the considerate drivers who took great care in Mill Lane while passing the scaffolding. Paul went on to tell us ‘The top of the building provided some great aerial views over Stotfold, especially on the days when the weather was kind.’ We think it looks superb! You can find out more about the plans for the Mill over the forthcoming weeks and months on page 12 of this month’s issue.

The pictures to the right show the Mill hidden beneath the scaffolding and the finished building in all it’s splendour. For those people wondering what the view is like at the top, the pictures below show some of the magnificent sights available from the Stotfold Mill roof.

Social Distanced Switch On At Silverbirch

Residents in Silverbirch Avenue will still be switching on their Christmas lights this year on the 6th December. However.....

With the current situation regarding social distancing, they are unable to run the event as normal with the usual carol singing, visit from Santa and his helpers and of course the delicious mince pies. All is not lost however, as you will still be able to enjoy the lights if you wish to drive round to see them or perhaps take a stroll along the street one evening after dusk.

One of the organisers and Silverbirch resident Emma Azzopardi, told the Stotfold News Magazine ‘unfortunately there will be no gathering this year to watch the switch on of the Silerbirch Christmas Lights. We are very disappointed as you can imagine, however we will still be collecting for charity throughout the month Silverbirch ladies at last year’s switch on.. with all proceeds being donated to local charity The Need Project.’ ‘Anyone that wishes to donate will find a collection box at Box Of Cakes Café or if it is easier, donations can be made by card at the window of the cafe if preferred.’ She added ‘ Santa has very kindly already left us lots of lollies and sweeties for all the children (courtesy of his special helpers at the Stotfold News Magazine) and so we look forward to seeing lots of you during December to help raise funds for this very worthy cause.’

Please enjoy the lights safely this year in Silverbirch Avenue..

will be suspended between Monday, 7 December 2020 and Friday 26, February 2021 inclusively.Thank you to reader Chris Hall for obtaining this info from CBC!

Stotfold Nature Reserve Wins Award The Stotfold Mill Preservation Trust is very proud to announce that once again this year the Nature Reserve has been awarded the Green Flag by Keep Britain Tidy on behalf of the UK Government Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

The Green Flag Award® scheme recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world. To find out more about the award go to www.greenflagaward.org. When the site was taken over in 1999 it required a lot of hard work to make it the wonderful space you see today., it is teeming with wildlife and is a welcoming place for the local community and (where possible) it’s visitors. Situated on Mill Lane on the eastern edge of the town, Stotfold Mill Meadows Nature Reserve is a real hidden gem. Huge thanks must go to the team of TEASEL volunteers who do such an excellent job of maintaining the reserve, enabling them to gain the award...the team continually work hard to ensure that the green space is maintained and nurtured to encourage the natural wildlife to thrive and flourish. Congratulations to all involved!

Get In The Festive Spirit.. As you will have read inside this month’s issue, the usual vast array of Christmas events, including the Community Christmas Fayre, Light Switch On Events and wonderful Christmas Market will sadly not be able to go ahead this year due to the current social distancing measures which are in place.

We have received such a positive response to our plea to help ‘Light Up Stotfold’ with many people planning to ‘go the extra mile’ to make sure their road or home is looking even more festive than ever! It seems the Christmas spirit in Stotfold lives on and is bigger and better than ever before! - we have even spotted some trees and decorations being put up in November!! Together with Stotfold Town Council, the Stotfold News Magazine have devised a plan to help recognise and celebrate the hard work that goes into making Stotfold look so festive at this time of year with a bit of friendly competition!

Do you enjoy decorating your house? Perhaps you are planning to go ‘all out’ this year and plan to include the whole house and garden! Whatever your preference, we are looking for those homes which bring the best contribution to making Stotfold feel that extra bit Christmas-like this festive season.

Do you own a business in Stotfold? Perhaps you are working from home and your house is now your ‘office’... we’ve taken that into consideration too... we want to see your Christmas ‘window!’ Come on Stotfold - Let’s all get involved!!

News from

Stotfold Watermill

A NEW RESIDENCE AT THE MILL…….. Those of you who have taken a walk past the mill in recent weeks will have noticed that the scaffolding that was erected all around the outside by the local company J R Scaffolding has now been removed. The company who did an excellent job for us, complying with the highest safety standards, can be contacted at www.jr-scaffolding.co.uk. You will have also been able to admire the superb work of painting the mill completed by Paul Robinson. Clearly Paul has a head for heights! Our thanks to both of them. I wonder how many of you have also noticed the new residence that has been added to the top right- hand corner at the front of the mill. It is specially designed for apus apus – no not the miller’s two cats but for a pair of common swifts! They will currently be warming themselves under the sun somewhere in Africa having departed for a winter holiday in August. When they return in early April, we hope that they will move into the smart new home for their two weeks isolation, if it is still required, before setting about starting to produce a family. You might have difficulty spotting them as swifts feed by catching insects on the wing, usually above 50 metres from the ground before flying straight into their nesting box. They do not usually perch as they have much smaller feet than other birds. You will be able to compare the swifts with house martins that we expect to be returning to nest at the rear of the mill. Their glossy blue-black upper parts and pure white under parts distinguish them from the sooty brown swifts. Like swifts, they feed on the wing on flying insects but with larger feet they are able to perch and for example will probably be seen sitting on the phone wires at the front of the mill. House martins usually return from Africa just before the swifts and stay with us for around a month longer so you should have plenty of chance to see them when you visit Randall’s Tearoom, even if the dreaded Corona virus delays our opening next year. Whilst thinking of next year’s opening, we are continuing to plan for the Steam and Country Fair on the 8th/9th May but we still need volunteers on the planning team as well as throughout the weekend. Why not make a New Year Resolution to visit our website, www.stotfoldmill.com to find out more about the mill and to consider joining us as a volunteer? There is so much pleasure to be gained as a member of this very sociable group whilst contributing to the life of the Stotfold community.

Everyone at Stotfold Mill hopes you are able to have a happy and enjoyable Christmas and can look forward to a brighter new year. Please stay safe!

Santa comes to Stotfold! Santa’s sleigh rides through Stotfold this Christmas..

Every year Rotary invites Santa in his sleigh to bring Seasons Greetings to everyone in Stotfold and Baldock. Santa usually helps Rotary with their collections for the many good causes that they support, in our local area, across the nation and further afield. Santa will still be visiting Stotfold in his sleigh - on Friday 18th December - to wish everyone a Happy Christmas (socially distancing of course!) and will be waving to all the children (and adults), while playing Christmas music as he rides along your road. Santa’s visit this year will start around 6.00 pm at Fen End. His route will then go along Astwick Road, around The Green and into Common Road. From there he will turn into Vaughan Road and Arlesey Road (part only, to the lights), left into Regent Street, right into Rook Tree Lane. At the end he will turn into Queen Street, along the High Street as far as Church Road, along there till The Avenue. Back onto the High Street he will turn left at the lights and down Hitchin Road. Finally (maybe towards 8.00 pm) he will go along Valerian Way / Tansy Avenue. From the Norton road roundabout he will go to Baldock for a well-earned rest. Sadly, due to the Coronavirus, Santa and Rotary will be unable to collect in the traditional manner this year. We really want to keep everyone safe and well, so if you would like to help Rotary with a donation we have set up a Just Giving Page. “But why should I give to Rotary?

What does Rotary do? Well, starting with Stotfold, all the large panels used for our Christmas lights were donated by Rotary. Then there are the two defibrillators (AEDs); one at the Greenacres Centre and the other at the Baptist chapel. Rotary funded those. Support has also been given to Etonbury School. A new Rotary Wood at Ivel Springs is currently funded and planted by Rotary, in co-operation with other local organisations. Garden House Hospice received funding this year to cope better with Covid-19 and Rotary has donated funding for Cancer Care locally and for assistance to people with Multiple Sclerosis. Since 1985, Rotary clubs across the world have financed vaccinations to eradicate Polio, funds amply boosted in recent years by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This dreadful disease is now found in just two countries, down from 125 countries 35 years ago. Apopo works for mine clearance in Africa and for TB virus detection, using small trained animals, including dogs - it has been supported twice by our Rotary Club. Most recently, Rotary in Baldock & Stotfold donated £1,000 towards the rebuilding of a hospital in Beirut, following the devastating explosion in the port on 4th August 2020. …and there is much more that Rotary does. If you would like to be part of making our communities better and feel you would like to donate, please look at Rotary’s Just Giving page: www.justgiving.com/rotary-baldock - Paul Redwood (President)

The Need Project Christmas Appeal Things are very busy at The Need Project this year as they prepare for Christmas with the challenges of COVID-19 meaning less staff, difficult and changing circumstances and increased demand. Many of you have been kindly asking how you can help.. Due to current restrictions they are unable to hold their usual 'Drop off Week' where they would normally request toys and food donations, so are asking for your help in a different way this year

How can I help? These are the ways in which YOU can make a real difference to someone this Christmas.. 1. Sponsor a Christmas package - If you would like to sponsor a package for a needy family this Christmas, you can donate from as little as £10. A typical package costs between £50-£75 depending on the size of the family. This doesn't include the presents that go out to children, who we know via the agencies we work with wouldn't receive anything at Christmas. Your donation will go towards basic food items, Christmas treats and Christmas presents if needed. 2. Choose where your donation goes - If you would like your donation to benefit a needy family in your town/village, you can specify this when you donate. 3. Make it personal - You can also add a message that we will write on a card and put in with the food parcel. 4. Create your own fundraising page - You may wish to start your own fundraising page for the Need Project Christmas Appeal 2020.

Why not hold a virtual coffee morning, a family quiz, a sponsored dog walk or a sponsored walk in a Santa hat? Just find them on facebook and click on the link 'Start fundraising'. THANK YOU.

Every single penny raised will help someone less fortunate have a much better Christmas..

News from

Roecroft Lower School

Hello everyone, and welcome to Roecroft Lower School’s news update.

It is very hard to reflect on November without addressing the situation we were all in again for the month; I am hoping as I write this that December has offered some positive changes for the country. This year, more than ever, it is important to recognise that how others around us present themselves or behave publicly, doesn’t always reflect the inner challenges many of us face on a daily basis. Looking after our mental health is as important as our physical health. Any one of us could experience periods of poor mental health; through the values of understanding, compassion and kindness we can not only support others but also ourselves. In school we always share with our children the importance of doing things with kindness and having courage every day and I am sure that as a community we are all doing the same.

Roecroft pupils enjoying their new topic and outdoor lessons.

Both myself and my team are incredibly grateful to have been allowed to remain open this term and still teach and nurture our children. We would all like to say thank you to our families for continually adapting to and following the rules and varied systems that have been necessary in school. This has ensured my staff have remained as safe as possible. So thank you, one and all!

An update from the Early Years team: In September we welcomed our new cohort of children into the Roecroft family. They have settled into school brilliantly and are thoroughly enjoying their learning. During the first half of the Autumn term our topic in Reception was ‘Who am I?’ and our learning was based around the children themselves, their families, friends and where they live. The children really enjoyed the topic, particularly when we learnt about where we live, the village of Stotfold and the country of England. The children used Google Maps and the Clevertouch board to navigate their way around Stotfold and find their houses. Throughout this topic, the children have also been looking closely at their own features when drawing themselves, as well as looking at how they have changed from when they were a baby and discussing what they would like to be when they grow up. They have also been finding out about how families and traditions are different as well as how new babies from different religions and cultures are welcomed into a family. During the second half of the term our topic in Reception has been ‘Let’s Celebrate’. We began the term by learning about Diwali, Remembrance Day, Bonfire Night and Birthdays, and we are now beginning our exciting Christmas activities. Many of us enjoy the learning linked to this celebration, and we are really looking forward to celebrating Christmas with our friends in school. As we are now officially in December may I wish you a Christmas that is everything you need it to be. Stay safe and look out for each other, Mrs Cross.

News from

Pix Brook Academy

It has been a tumultuous month since we last wrote. Christmas is fast approaching and under normal circumstances it would be full steam ahead in preparation. This year is somewhat different, as I write we are still under a national lockdown and it is as yet uncertain whether this will be lifted in time for Christmas. It goes without saying that everyone is hoping it is. We have a number of staff selfisolating and all in all it is most odd at school. Fortunately, the pupils have been fantastic and are really starting to make the school their own. Amidst all the craziness pupils have been working hard in their subjects. The pupils in science lessons in year five have been doing experiments to see if they can cultivate plants, History lessons have been designed to promote debate and discussion around a variety of topics and pupils have really immersed themselves in this. English has been about extended writing and in maths year six pupils are once again immersing themselves in the exciting world of fractions. It is important at moments like this to pause and just watch what is happening in schools. Even with everything happening in the world schools are so clearly the right place for children. The interactions, conversations, lessons and just “energy” at school is just vital for the wellbeing of young people. Our challenge, along with every other school is to maintain this in a safe, purposeful environment. There is no doubt that the contradiction between “lockdown 2” happening in the rest of the community and the full-on busyness of a school can feel jarring. I’m sure that Established 2010 must be doubly so for young people.

As you know the guidelines have made it impossible to undertake the normal open evening. Initially we had decided to offer tours to groups of six but these too had to be cancelled. Instead the school is now in the process of producing a virtual tour of the school. While this will not provide the full-scale impact I know visitors feel when they first visit the school we are working hard to ensure it gives at least a flavour of the school. The focus is on our pupils so that prospective parents can see at least virtually the school in action. As we approach the final few weeks of the most bizarre year any of us has had, I‘d like to take this opportunity to wish the entire community a merry Christmas from all at PBA.

News from

St Mary’s Academy

Christmas really is one of the best times of year to be working in a school especially with things as they are currently. With a little help from our friends, the last day in November will be spent putting up our Christmas trees so when the children come in on Tuesday 1st December, the school will be transformed. The look on their faces when they see the trees, Nativity scene and classroom decorations is wonderful. On this day, we will also be working in conjunction with the SMSA our school parent’s association to run the very popular ‘Break the Rules’ day. Children can make a small donation to break a rule from the list provided e.g. chocolate snack, non-uniform.

Our children will also be practising for our Christmas Concerts to be presented via Dojo and the website as we cannot welcome our families into the building. On Friday 11th December everyone will be invited to wear something festive to celebrate Christmas Jumper Day. Any donations will be made to the very worthy Save the Children Charity. As is now tradition in the last week of term, we will have Christmas Lunch and Parties organised in each classroom on Thursday 17th December. To round the afternoon off we have a special virtual Christmas Theatre Panto via Zoom! The children should thoroughly enjoy the festive fun and this is a lovely way to end the year!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped or supported the work of our school again this year, especially in such difficult times. A great many people and organisations are involved with us and this is very much appreciated. Thank you. From all of us at St Mary’s, we would like to wish everyone a very happy and healthy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. We hope everyone stays safe and well, and we shall see you all back at school on Tuesday 5th January 2021!

New Year 5 Building At the start of the half term we were delighted to welcome Year 5 students back into their very own new building. This new building is exclusively for the Year 5 students, and provides a warm and welcoming learning environment each day. It is fully fitted with new furniture and equipment, including interactive whiteboards and chromebook access, along with direct access onto their own Year 5 playground. It will provide this and subsequent Year 5 students who join Etonbury with a unique environment, that provides a ‘school within a school’ feel. Why not see for yourself on twitter @ETAJuniors

Virtual Tour of the School We received our Ofsted ‘Good’ grade just before the first lockdown and recognition as being one of the ‘top 100 performing and improving schools in the country.’ As a result we were looking forward to welcoming prospective parents to the school, as well as offering personalised tours and opportunities to meet the staff and students. Unfortunately with the advent of the second lock down upon us that is proving a challenge, so why not look at our website and take a virtual tour of the school. There are video presentations from staff, information on departments, as well as images of the school. We have a vibrant social media community on twitter, where lots of departments have their own twitter accounts, sharing news, updates and information about the school. Why not follow us on twitter, search Etonbury on twitter to access the different subject profiles. Our new prospectus is now available, contact the school if you would like to receive a copy.

Student Leaders at Etonbury As a school we look to nurture and develop skills that will prepare the students for life after Etonbury. Taking a leadership role and being involved in the student voice is something that we value at Etonbury. Each year the student body takes an active role in the school and shares with the Senior Leadership Team what is important to the students in their community. This group of students attends leadership team meetings, writes their own action plan for the year, leads student assemblies, seeks the views of the wider student body. The Etonbury Student Leadership Team comprises of a Student Principal, Vice Principal and Student Leaders. Applicants from Year 10 and Year 11 have undergone a rigorous interview process before their appointment to the role. The application process is run as if the students were applying for a job, so they benefit from writing a letter of application and interview. We are delighted to announce that the following students have been appointed to the Student Leadership Team for 2020/21. Thea - Student Principal Heidi - Student Vice Principal Issac - Student Leader James - Student Leader Ethan - Student Leader Jasper - Student Leader Bethan - Student Leader Lockdown Lockdown has had an impact on all of our lives and at Etonbury we have been working with all our students during form time to support their well-being. The Art department worked with 500 students to create a lockdown recovery project, asking students to share their experiences of lockdown in art form. It was very humbling to see how our school community was affected. October - Black History Month As part of the nationwide Black History Month Etonbury recognised the contributions of African, Asian and Caribbean people and throughout October Mrs Young shared a fact file of the day, along with video clips of each individual. It promoted awareness amongst the students of key figures in history and the forum to discuss the Black Lives Matter movement.

Etonbury Juniors..

Small, Nurturing, Carefree

Etonbury Academy has invested heavily in delivering our enhanced primary model (Yrs 5 and 6). This allows our pupils to receive an education reassuringly similar to that in their lower school. For the majority of the time, they have the same teacher, in the same classroom. A familiar face for both our children and our parents..

SCHOOL WITHIN A SCHOOL Our new junior school allows our pupils to begin their journey toward secondary education in a safe and secure setting - distinct from the main school - different entrance and timings of the school day. All the developments in recent years - with new teaching staff, premises and an advanced primary curriculum model were recognised with our Good Ofsted earlier in the year (Feb 2020). The inspectors were greatly impressed by the culture of high expectations for all pupils, everyone follows the Etonbury Academy (ETA) Way ethos The Etonbury Academy (ETA) ‘Everyone is respectful. Together we care. Always aim higher. FACILITIES As part of an established extended secondary school, our pupils benefit from all the exciting facilities Etonbury Academy has to offer. Children take part in a vast array of physical education led by our seven specialist sports teachers. We have access to our own playing fields, hall and gym together with the space offered by the sports hall and astro pitches at the Pendleton Centre -directly adjacent to the junior school building. Pupils eagerly anticipate their bespoke computing sessions and weekly French and music. We access advanced science and technology facilities with the support of our secondary colleagues to deliver our KS2 Immersion Days. PRIMARY SUPPORT Using a wealth of diagnostic tools available to us and specially trained teaching assistants in a number of areas including speech and language, phonological awareness and how to support pupils on the autistic spectrum - we are quickly able to gain an overview of our pupils strengths and difficulties both academically, socially and emotionally. Our primary full time teaching assistants receive regular training in key interventions and spend valuable time supporting pupils with additional needs both in the classroom, in small groups and on a one to one basis. Already we are seeing excellent results from pupils receiving this support.. COMMUNICATING WITH YOU Parents are a huge part of what we do and are massively important in ensuring we provide the best provision for children in our care. Parents know their children best and provide the teaching staff at ETA Juniors with the greatest insight into how to support them. By giving time to listen to our parents we know this benefits our children greatly. Short lines of communication -class teacher, Head of Year, Head of Juniors - ensure parents are responded to quickly and efficiently. No questions too great or too small! SMALL CLASS SIZES All our pupils are taught in classes of no more than 26 pupils across the two year groups. By ensuring smaller class sizes at Etonbury Juniors, our teachers enjoy getting to know each student as an individual, working with them more closely to enhance their strengths and improve their weaknesses across the whole curriculum. Students also benefit socially as they form lasting relationships with other students around them. The EJA teams had a tough time with only the U18 team recording a league and cup win in October. Once again, our fixtures have ground to a halt and the clubhouse closed which is a financial blow to the club following the loss of our Firework Night on 5 November. Let us hope we can resume football again in December.

We are always looking for more people to join us and if you can spare a few hours a week you would be very welcome to join our “football family”, please contact the Chairman Phil Pateman on 07825 133344 or email us on the address below.

We would take this opportunity to wish all our players, supporters, committee members, helpers and club members a happy Christmas and hopefully a much better 2021. JSJ Stadium New Roker Park Arlesey Road Stotfold, Bedfordshire, SG5 4HE

Butchers Blog

Latest news from from Beale Bros

As the festive season fast approaches, we can reflect on what a very strange and challenging year it has been.

So many of the things we have taken for granted, have been disrupted and put on hold. So many families have been affected in many different ways. Local businesses in our community have worked tirelessly, making sure customers, neighbours, family and friends have been kept safe and looked after, and are still doing so as I write this blog. At the shop we have done our very best to accommodate the many changes and are proud that we are still open as a small family business, serving the locality.

News from

Stotfold Scout Group

These are still strange times, and I am writing this on Remembrance Sunday, a day we think of the past and a poignant reminder of how the world has changed for all in the last 9 months. Last year the vast majority of the group attended and witnessed the laying of wreaths, this year in private moment of reflection a lone leader laid the wreath for Stotfold Scout Group with one observer.

The group had been gearing up to restart a couple of sections after the half term break, but with the 2nd lockdown being imposed on the 5th of November this has meant that we cannot meet face to face until the earliest of 2nd December, but this is also dependant on what government say measures will be from this date. Sections are now looking at how to deliver a remote programme.

The Group has worked hard to put in measures for the use of the Hut and Grounds by sections and make COVID Secure, which has to be approved by our District Commissioner An outline of how we will operate, following Scouts’ ‘COVID Code’: • New control measures will be in place for all activities • Additional hygiene measures will be put in place • Social distancing will be observed • Group sizes will be limited • Adjustments will be made for young people who are vulnerable or affected by COVID. The return to Face to Face will be voluntary for all Leaders, Young People and supporters, our priority is to keep everyone safe.

With no one meeting at the hut during this time, has given us the opportunity to have contractors in to solve an ongoing leaky roof, this was a major task and to get all trades in took over 21/2 weeks from start to finish as the whole gulley needed removing, and a new box gulley constructed with proper gradient to drain away water quicker, and replace water damaged ceilings in the main hall, and paint to blend in the old and new. If you would like more information on volunteering please contact me on gslstotfold@gmail.com

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, from the Team at 1st Stotfold Scout Group.

December Recipes- Christmas Dinner Hacks! with Trace Buggins, Head Chef at Mount Pleasant Golf Club

Hello Stotfold Chefs!

By the time you are reading this Lockdown 2 will be done ( I hope!) and we will all be buzzing around getting ready for the Christmas celebrations. It’s our busiest time of the year at the Golf Club and with our Christmas hampers now on sale (see our website for details) it’s even busier. So, this month is all about our kitchen tips to make sure you (the chef ) have a stress free Christmas day!

Local chef Trace Buggins

Turkey : Break the rules and Spatchcock your turkey by cutting the backbone out and laying it flat on your Tray with butter ,salt and pepper and lay bacon on top then splash some water in the tray and cover first with grease proof and then a tent of foil , this then creates a moist environment which stops the bird from drying out . This also means the cooking time will also be lower so keep an eye on it .

Stuffing : Dice a small onion add to a block of butter and cook in the microwave until soft …add this with some boiling chicken stock , handful of cranberries and grated orange peel to your normal shop brought stuffing and bang!!! ……..a flavourful Cranberry and Orange stuffing . Potatoes: The day before the big day, steam/boil your spuds, drain once par-boiled (so that the edges are fluffing up). Put in to a tray with your choice of fat , duck fat is all the trend , but you can get some great results with normal veg oil toss them around and then season with salt and pepper. Once cool, clingfilm them and keep in a cool place and then just place them in the oven the next day until soft golden and crispy. Gravy: If you’re using the old supermarket granules, try giving this a lift by using 25% red wine and 75% hot stock (saved juices from your turkey) so much better than plain old boiling water .

I hope you all have a fantastic day on the 25th and we all at Mount Pleasant Golf Club wish you a Happy New Year and if your passing by, pop in for a hot toddy and a mince pie! See you next year! Trace

Power Cash helps kick-start season Girls in a Bedfordshire football club will have a new training kit to kick off their first season playing 11-a-side, thanks to a donation from a power company. The Stotfold Juniors Under 14 Girls have been given a £250 Team Sports Award by UK Power Networks, which they are using to help buy training kit they can wear every week. The award is thanks to John McShane, a field engineer for the company based in Bedford. John’s daughter Lucy has played for the team for five years and he helps run a refreshments stand during games to raise cash for a Christmas event for the team.

Stotfold Juniors football club attracts more than 600 boys, girls, men and women and has 45 teams from under 7s to Under Stotfold Girl’s Under 14 team in their new kit sponsored by UK Power Networks, 18s. It’s the second time the U14 team have been given the award, last time they spent it on collapsible goals for training. John said: “I think the scheme is excellent. Sports clubs are a massive part of any community and being part of a team teaches children discipline and respect for team mates and opponents. These awards help keep teams going. It’s especially helpful this year when sponsorship has been hard to come by due to the uncertainty caused by the COVID pandemic.” Fuzz Rahman,U14 Girls coach said: “The U14 Girls of Stotfold Juniors are delighted that they can go into the new season with new kit and equipment as they have their first season playing 11v11 football.

We normally seek sponsorship, but with many small businesses having a tough time during these unprecedented times we have fundraised and received small donations. With this grant, we can now obtain the full kit and training kit going into the new season.” The Team Sports Award scheme encourages UK Power Networks staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and the development of sporting opportunities.

Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from grants since the scheme was set up. Last year over 70 teams benefitted to a combined sum of more than £18,000.
