From the Editor Welcome to February!

The New Year has welcomed many new enquiries into the magazine and a sprinkling of new advertisers. We also welcome new readers from the homes being built in and around Stotfold as we expand our coverage by another additional 100 copies. Thank you to Heidi Jenkins for joining our ever increasing team of delivery volunteers and helping us to reach the new homes in Maple Gardens. If you are one of our new readers and are new to the town itself, then welcome to Stotfold! We hope you enjoy living in the town and experiencing everything it has to offer.

Our front cover photograph this month was kindly sent in to us by Heather Almond. It is a stunning shot taken of St Mary’s Church one evening in early January. We just love how dramatic it looks. Thank you Heather. If you are a buddy photographer or just happen to catch a great picture then please send it in to us. We always like to receive the photographs, even if we do not have a use for it immediately we will most certainly use it at some point. You can find our contact details to the right hand side of this column.

Our letters pages continue to fill themselves again this month with a wide variety of letters received over the last few weeks. We are constantly told that these are one of the favourite features of the magazine and we thank everybody that contributes to these. If you wish to reply to anything you read on these pages then we are always pleased to gain responses to previous letters. You will see that the topic of ‘previous shops’ within Stotfold has got a few readers thinking this month - we are so interested to hear your tales and recollections of where we now live. Please drop us a line and tell us what you recall. Most people know that our family has lived in Stotfold for many, many years. Our own children find it so interesting to know some of the secrets that Stotfold holds. For instance, it’s widely known in the town that Stotfold once had its own cinema. Maybe a surprise to some of our newer readers.

Do you own a business or know somebody that does? We always make sure that our advertisers receive the very best, well informed advice when it comes to local advertising. If your business could benefit from advertising to almost 5,000 homes each month then please get in touch and we’ll use our experience to give you our very best advice.

Until next month!

Year Long Challenge For Stotfold Father While most of our readers are still finishing off the left over chocolate, Stotfold dad Andrew Hall is training hard for the year ahead. This year Andrew will be taking on multiple events, creating a yearlong challenge to raise money for the East & North Hertfordshire Hospitals' Charity, The Lister Neonatal Unit Families Group Big Build campaign. The campaign aims to raise £338,000 for a new families room based at the hospital. This much needed area will facilitate families spending days, weeks or months in the unit whilst their children are being cared for. Currently the family room on the unit is only big enough to seat six people, with limited cooking facilities available. As the unit has a capacity 30 babies, there can be up to 60 parents using this space.

Andrew together with twins Noah & Olivia warming up for the challenge.

Andrew who lives on Buttercup Road is keen to support this cause after his five year old twins Noah & Olivia spent time in the neonatal unit a few years ago. Andrew started fundraising a while back and has already raised over £10,000. Money raised has previously allowed the unit (not NHS funds) to purchase items required to assist mothers whilst staying with their children. ‘I feel that this is the one way I am able to give something back’ Andrew told the Stotfold Magazine. ‘Those first few days spent on the unit are crucial and the support you receive is second to none.’

Andrew started his quest on Saturday 5th January on a treadmill of all things, spending 4 hours aiming to run (or walk) as far as possible. During the yearlong challenge, Andrew plans to exceed a distance of 100km through various activities, events and runs. To help Andrew on his year long quest you can donate through his Justgivingpage: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/12in12neonatalbigbuild. We wish Andrew the very best of luck and look forward to updating you on how his challenges go along the way!

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

I am writing regarding the old photograph featured in last month’s issue of the Stotfold News Magazine.

My daughter Nicola Berrett is second from the right in the front row and her friend Karen Shepherd is also on the front row, last one on the left.

I would be interested to know whether anyone else has been identified.. If my arithmetic is correct they would have been at Etonbury during the years 19741978.

Dear Editor,

I just wanted your readers to know of the generosity and community spirit of Jan and Les of the Stag Public House on Brook Street.

We all know that Christmas is a time for giving and enjoying the company of friends and family; Jan and Les not only gave a delicious free Christmas lunch plus all the trimmings, but also a warm welcome and good company for 20 of the Stotfold Good Neighbour Group clients who were spending much of Christmas on their own. The group really enjoyed the lunch and in particular the opportunity to get out and meet others. They had a relaxing and highly enjoyable time and would like to say a collective big thank you to Jan, Les and the staff at the Stag.

Our particular thanks go to Landlady Jan and her kitchen supporters who prepared the lunch and made the whole get-together so enjoyable. Regards, Shirley Priddy

Editors Note: Can you help Shirley? Here is a reminder of the photograph. Please call 01462 731986 if you can help.

News from

Stotfold Watermill

YOU CANNOT MISS IT! THE GREATEST YET! In last month’s report we promised that this month we would give you more details of this year’s Steam Fair and Country Show on May 11th/12th. It might seem a little early in the year to be publicising this event but already advance ticket bookings are being made via our website. The weekend begins on Friday 10th with Live@TheMill. This is now established as one of the hottest live rock events in the area and this year features Allergy and ChromeS. Allergy is a highly talented and energetic three-piece indie/rock covers band that is the resident group at The Horn, St Albans and perform at gigs throughout the county. They will undoubtedly attract a large following of their fans. ChromeS hail from Stevenage and is a 5-piece rock covers band featuring the twin guitars of Phil Richardson and Jamie Sutterby and the amazing vocal talents of Chuck Jones, all backed up with the powerhouse rhythm section that is Paul Hodgskin and Jason Farbrother.

Tickets for this event cost £7.50 and are available from our website www.stotfoldmill.com and from The Rooms or Country Properties. With a craft beer and cider bar available throughout from 7.00pm-11.30pm this is an evening not to be missed. Saturday and Sunday bring the Country Show, each day from 10.30am until 5.00pm, featuring as usual an array of trade and craft stalls, the ever-popular fun fair and a display of the Saunders Stam collection. This year we have an even greater number of entertainments and attractions throughout both days. Main feature in the arena will be the Wryngwyrm Vikings Re-enactment Group who will be camped on site throughout the weekend. They will be offering training in weaponry twice each day before challenging spectators, especially children, to a mock battle. On Saturday, we will welcome the Rockets Motorcycle Display Team and the Essex Dog Display Team, while on Sunday the Stannage Stunt Team and David Seamarks Sheepdog Demonstration will appear in the arena. Once again, we will be pleased to welcome gymnastic and dance displays by children from our local schools and we are pleased to announce that our award winning, highly talented local youngsters from Gifford’s Dance Academy will feature in the arena twice on Saturday. Each day Captain Neville’s Flying Circus will display overhead.

If all that is not enough to give you a great weekends entertainment, there will be no less than nine different musical groups performing in the beer marquee across the two days. That has to be the best weekend out anywhere around this year for the unchanged discounted one-day ticket price of £8 and only £4 for children and senior citizens or a family ticket at £23 if bought in advance. Visit our website now at www.stotfoldmill.com to book your ticket.

Essex Dog Display team performing at the event.

Remember too that throughout the weekend the Kids Zone offers FREE activities sponsored by Stotfold Mill including an inflatable slide, two bouncy castles, gladiator joust and giant games. Saturday evening is a FREE evening for all the family with a children’s disco staring at 5.00pm and live music including Sam Gifford and the Innocents.

Letters to the Editor Dear Joanne,

December seems like quite a way back, last year in fact, but I would still like to say a big thank you to the Salvation Army and John Street in particular who organised the Community Christmas Concert in the Greenacres Centre. The concert was a great success and showcased many local groups and their expertise. I think everybody in the audience, and those who participated really enjoyed the evening.

The concert had free entry but a collection was held and an amazing £467 raised. The Salvation Army very generously offered the donations to the Good Neighbour Group and also gave me the opportunity to tell the audience about the support we offer to local residents and to issue a plea for more volunteers. We particularly need more drivers as at present we are supporting local people by providing in excess of 1,700 transports to hospitals and local clinics every year.

With the money donated that evening, the Good Neighbour Group will continue to operate their telephone help line and support all Stotfold, Fairfield and Astwick residents in need of some good-neighbourly assistance.

My thanks again to the Salvation Army and the donation to our funds. Wendy Craig Chair Stotfold Good Neighbours

Letters to the Editor Dear Joanne,

On behalf of the Need Project I would like to send a massive thank you to so many people who have supported us last year and in the run up to Christmas. Firstly for all the ongoing support we receive from regular donations of food, finances and items given throughout the year.

For each individual who regularly pops into the Centre (in High Street) to donate items, particularly during our drop-in week in November, which was extremely busy. Thank you for all gifts received. A big thank you to local business who have supported us, in particular: First Step Estate Agents, David Scott, Treadaway Electrical & MLE Construction. To the ‘White Hart’ at Campton who generously supported us. To Sandy Fire and Rescue Service and the Co-op in Stotfold. Those involved with the fantastic amount of money raised at the the ‘Silverbirch Light Switch On’ event this year. To Grange Baptist Church in Letchworth, St. Peter’s PC in Arlesey and many other local Churches and Schools. Arlesey WI, ‘Little Squirts’ in Sandy, St. Marys PC and Academy. Arlesey Brownies, Beavers at Fairfield Park, St. Andrew’s PC in Biggleswade, Grand Union. To all the stores and to Stotfold Town Council who have a Need Project basket. And to Joanne at the Stotfold News Magazine for always being so helpful.

The generosity and kindness of people is quite amazing and certainly restores faith in human nature. Finally a big thank you to all the volunteers who regularly give of their time to help, either delivering parcels, manning the centre, doing the administration and praying. We couldn’t do it without you all. Forgive us if we’ve missed anyone out, but we wish you all a happy and peaceful New Year. Thank you Gordon Hamilton Editors Note: We are truly delighted to support you Gordon and the wonderful work you do at The Need Project.

Dear Editor,

We would like to say thank you to the Stotfold Good Neighbour Group for arranging a lovely Christmas lunch at the Stag Public House on December 28th. Thank you also to the Stag for a most enjoyable meal. We had a great time, the chance to have a ‘natter’ with friends we don’t see very often. Thank you once again to all involved. Mr & Mrs Minnis

Dear Editor,

Stotfold should be proud of one of it’s residents!

My favourite part of Stotfold is the walk past the mill and cemetery over the fore bridge and across the common.I walk that way most days with my dog Rosie. Every time I pick up 6-8 cans that litter the banks.

I was surprised yesterday to find piles of cans and bottles stacked up on the banks. I thought there must have been a party! So armed with an orange bag, I planned to pick them up today.

I find a wonderful young man working away in the ditch collecting the cans and bottles. He’s an unseen hero cleaning up Stotfold just because he doesn’t like to see it looking a mess!

I wonder who the person is?

Who throws cans of Strongbow and bottles of Vodka out of their car window? Often these cans are almost full?

On behalf of Stotfold residents I would like to say a big thank you to the young man cleaning up, Isobel Dunkley.

Letters to the Editor Dear Joanne,

I am referring to the letter from Janice Clegg in the last edition of the Stotfold News, reference the lack of shops in Stotfold but I think it is not just the missing shops but the whole demise of Stotfold as we knew it.

I am sure I remember Janice when I started work as an office junior age 15 at local firm Coleman-Wallwork, a steel foundry in Brook Street (now Wycklond Close). It was quite a large company employing enough people to warrant having a staff canteen offering mid morning snacks, full lunches and afternoon teas.

This is by no means the only large firm in our VILLAGE, I can remember several others listed below:

Shieldrops - High Street (opposite the Indian Restaurant) Ironcrafts - Baldock Road. Borst Bros. Manufacturing Ply Woods - Taylors Road. Lewker Engineering - Baldock Road. A.M.P Engineering - Baldock Road. Hanson & Childs Engineering - Rook Tree Lane. A & AJ Leach- Olivers Lane. Stotfold Plating - Taylors Road (later Motorola).

There were also several small companies in the Fen End Industrial Area and the Old Brewery Complex. All these companies giving employment to Stotfold people.

Now for the shops, yes Janice is right about the old Co-op Store, you could get almost anything and if it was not in stock the Manager would soon get it in for you. If it was not available at the Co-op you would certainly be able to get it at Smiths in Regent Street. Next to Smiths was the Post Office and a lovely drapery shop called Talbots selling haberdashery items plus ladies and children’s clothing. In my younger days I can remember there being 5 butchers shops and now I am going to mention as many as I can recall:

Saunders Footwear, Arlesey Road. Hydes Saddlers, Regent Street. Flittons DIY, The Green. WG King Grocery & Bakers, The Green. Tuckeys Barber & Haberdashery, Hitchin Road. Coopers Greengrocers, Regent Street. Elwoods Grocery, Regent Street. The Wine Shop, Brook Street. Wakes Bakery, Brook Street. Saunders Butchers & Grocery, Hitchin Road. Hallworths (lovely ice-cream) Hitchin Road. Samsons Grocery, The Green. Stan Dear Cycle Shop, Arlesey Road. Woodhouse Greengrocers, Brook Street. There were also quite a few very small shops dotted about the village some just run from the front room of a house. This is all when we were a village, and look at what we have now that we are a town. I have really only touched the surface.

Initial consultation: £45, follow up treatment: £32 Tuesdays 2pm-7pm Wednesday 9am-1pm Thursday 3pm-7pm Saturdays

News from

Roecroft Lower School. Well January whizzed by and we are almost half way through the Spring Term, which means half way through this academic year. Time certainly flies when you’re busy and having fun. January has been a busy month of teaching and learning, the children are now incredibly well settled and are beginning to really enjoy and thrive with the challenges the curriculum has to offer them. In addition to this we have had a variety of workshops to enhance our teaching, such as healthy food workshops, ukulele workshops and swimming lessons at Hitchin pool. It makes us so very proud to see our children behave as wonderfully for new adults and out of school as they do in school for their regular teachers and staff. An Update from the Early Years Team:

This half term the children have been learning all about space, which they have found truly fascinating. We have explored the different planets and star constellations, learning lots of interesting facts about them! Using their imagination, the children decided upon and wrote a list of items which they would bring to space with Baby Bear, from the story ‘Whatever Next’, as well as creating their very own aliens, and using adjectives to describe their appearances. After half term, our learning will continue through the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, and we will be exploring how plants grow. The children will also be learning about dinosaurs! Our Values for February are: Love and Friendship.

News from

St Mary’s Academy. January was an eventful start to the New Year with the first of our monthly Collective Worships in the form of an Epiphany themed Service in which our children and staff were all involved and some even dressed up for the part! The service included a blessing of the school by Reverend Bill Britt from St Mary’s Church. Our school clubs are all well under way as the children settle back into the new term. Also during February our children will be participating in several multi skills sports sessions. These should be enjoyable events for all those participating so look out for further details in our ParentMail newsletters and in bookbags. February brings our ever popular annual Creative Arts Week between 4th and 8th; this brilliant event gives the children a chance to experience all sorts of creative activities for the whole week with a wide range of topics. Previous year’s sessions have included dance, drama, music, food tech, creative writing, art and many crafts so we’re sure there will be an activity for everyone to enjoy. The St Mary’s School Association have two events planned this month: the well-received SMSA Quiz Night taking place on Friday 1st February in the Academy Hall – 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start (Call the Academy for details on booking your team - 01462 730643) and the Happy Bags Collection planned for Tuesday 5th February. This initiative encourages our families having a post-Christmas clear out to save their unwanted items, collect them into bags available from St Mary’s Academy office and deliver them to school on the collection date. They are then picked up by the Charity in return for a monetary donation dependent on weight, which the SMSA then uses to benefit our school children. Currently we are raising money towards IPADs and IT equipment. We would encourage any members of our community to please help us even if they do not have children currently within St Mary’s. The Charity will take clean clothes, paired shoes or trainers, belts, hats, accessories, jewellery, toiletries, console games, souvenirs, handbags, perfume, towels, bed linen and soft toys. Both of these events raise much needed funds towards our school – please support us! Please also look out for further details on the SMSA Sponsored Bounce planned for Tuesday 12th March.

Class Assemblies during February are being led by Emerald Class on Friday 1st, Jet Class on Friday 22nd and Crystal Class on Wednesday 27th so we look forward to these. As always parents and close relatives are invited to attend and enjoy!

Our last day of this half term is Friday 8th February, with school resuming on Monday 18th for seven busy weeks to take us up to Easter.

Don’t forget Chinese New Year on Tuesday 5th and Valentine’s Day on Thursday 14th!

Thank you for reading our update for February - we look forward to updating you on all of our news and information next month! To contact the Stotfold News Magazine please call 01462 731986

Is Your Home Secure Enough?

In light of the recent spate of burglaries in and around Stotfold we contacted our local police and were given some great tips on home security. Interestingly, they informed us that homes with no security measures in place are five times more likely to be burgled than those with simple security measures. Taking just a few steps can make a big difference in keeping your home safe from burglary.

Here are a few tips we would like to share with you: 1. Lock your doors and windows every time you leave the house, even when you're just out in the garden, remembering to double-lock UPVC doors (lift handle and turn key) 2. Hide all keys, including car keys, out of sight and away from the letterbox (remember a device could be used to hook keys through the letterbox) 3. Install a visual burglar alarm (as part of a suite of prevention measures - a burglar alarm on its own will not prevent entry to your home) 4. Install good outside lighting 5. Get a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property 6. Leave radios or lights in your house on a timer to make the property appear occupied 7. Make sure the fences around your garden are in good condition 8. Secure bikes at home by locking them to something immoveable inside a locked shed or garage 9. Keep ladders and tools stored away; don't leave them outside where they could be used to break into your home 10. Ensure side gates are locked to prevent access to the rear of the property 11. Improve natural surveillance at the front of your property (i.e trim high hedges). 12. Mark your property with postcode and house number and register your property for free on a national property register (many to be found online). 13. Consider joining or forming a Neighbourhood Watch scheme 14. Remove valuables from view of ground floor windows 15. Store any high value items (i.e. jewellery, passports) in a properly secured safe or bank vault Lastly, share any crime related information among your neighbours. Utilising the power of local social media in an effective way, can help create vast amounts of local awareness and even act as a deterrent to would-be offenders.

The Academy of Central Bedfordshire Last term we were delighted to welcome the Bishop of Hertford, Dr Michael Beasley in the company of Rev Bill Britt of St Mary's in Stotfold to The Academy. Dr Michael had come to learn about the work carried out by the students and staff in the school and the community. He enjoyed his tour of our school and also the cake which our Catering and Hospitality students had baked for him.

For the fifth year running students at The Academy created a tree for entry into the St Mary’s Christmas Tree festival. Mr Bacon and our construction students built the Rev Bill Britt pictured left with Jeremy Dodd Headteacher frame in the workshop, it was then beautifully decorated by staff and and the Bishop of Hertford, Dr Michael Beasley students to create the final product. Year 11 are currently learning the fundamentals of Boxing within PE and have visited Samson’s Academy in Bedford. Sidney Thompson the Head Coach and professional trainer from East Area Boxing Academy has been teaching the young people a range of skills including fitness, pad and bag work and punch combinations.

The students have had been fortunate enough to meet some of his professional boxers, Micky Mills and Julian Wilson. Sidney and Micky have attended the school for some of the PE lessons to provide high quality coaching from their years of experience both performing in and out of the ring. It has been a pleasure to work collaboratively with them both, inspiring students to participate in the sport and continue being physically active beyond school. We hope to continue this working relationship to create further opportunities for our students. We look forward to bringing you more news from the Academy of Central Bedfordshire next month.

Stotfold Junior Football Club Christmas and new year have come and gone and the cold weather is upon us. As I write this 2019 fixtures are in full swing. For all new (and old!) residents we play our games on Saturdays and Sundays at numerous locations in Stotfold namely the riverside, The Green, Arlesey Road, Behind the Fox and Duck Pub, Hitchin Road Park, Etonbury school and at Roker Park.

In this fantastic club we have 650 boys and girls playing in over 50 teams with the support of 100’s of volunteer parents and coaches running teams, collecting subs and selling tea and coffee. So please do come along and support the teams at the weekend.

Our U10 manager Mark Church has had a debut of his own. Mark has had his first book published and is on sale on Amazon. A life Beyond is a fantasy tale involving a young boy called Daniel who leads a normal life until he ends up trapped in another world, it's a twisting tale with fun and hope. Congratulations Mark.

Some other exciting news, we are starting renovations on the changing rooms at the park on Hitchin Road in January. Our Under 11 girls are proud and excited to show off their new kit from their new sponsor "Robbie's Dog Walking". Massive thank you from all of the girls.

Lastly our Chairman Ian Corner has had to resign due to work commitments so we all thank him for his efforts and leadership. Follow us at https://www.facebook.com/stotfoldjuniorfc/ and http://www.stotfoldjuniorsdc.co.uk/ To contact the Stotfold News Magazine please call 01462 731986

Darts Marathon In Aid of Prostate Cancer The Stag Darts team will be attempting to play 180 legs of darts in just twelve hours, all in aid of Prostate Cancer UK. The team consisting of eight players will be starting their quest at 11am in the morning of Saturday 2nd February and will be playing as many legs as possible until 11pm.

Event organiser Paul Robinson told the Stotfold News Magazine ‘we are keen to raise as much money for this fantastic cause as possible. So many men have issues surrounding this awful disease so we wanted to raise as much awareness as we possibly could and hope to do this through the darts tournament.’ The darts marathon will continue throughout the day with a disco in the pub from 8.45pm for those people keen to join in the fun and watch the final legs.

Paul continued, ‘We hope to raise as much as we can and have already exceeded our initial target of £500. Thank you to the Stag Pub for all of their help organising the event and to Kevin Trussel from the Discovery Roadshow for very kindly giving up his time for free for such a worthwhile cause.’

The disco is open to everyone -no tickets are required. The darts will be ongoing from 11am on the day. Paul hopes as many people from the community will pop down to support the players and help hopefully celebrate their 180th leg as the night goes on. We look forward to updating our readers on how much money was raised in a future issue of the Stotfold News Magazine.
