We would like to bring your attention to our brand new feature on page 4 this month ‘Keep it LOCAL!.’ We thought you’d all enjoy finding out more about some of the faces behind our local businesses. We hope you enjoy our lighthearted chat with Matt from The Cleaning Hub this month (thanks Matt for being a good sport!) Thank you also to Stephen McKenna for allowing us to use his beautiful picture for this month’s cover shot - we think you will agree it is just stunning. Finally, if you choose to celebrate it, then we wish you a very happy Valentines Day - maybe we should all just try to spread a little bit more love this year... Until next month..

LOCAL!
Finding out about the people behind our local busineses...
Helping support our local businesses!
Welcome to our new monthly feature aimed at introducing you to some of the faces behind our local businesses and Stotfold News Magazine advertisers. This month we take five minutes to chat to owner of The Cleaning Hub, Matt Coulson. Matt, The Cleaning Hub is still a relatively new business to Stotfold, how is it all going? It's going really well. My diary was completely booked up in December with everybody wanting their pre-Christmas carpet & upholstery cleans, but that momentum has carried on into January with an almost full diary this month too.
What made you choose Stotfold as your home town and the place to launch the Cleaning Hub? My wife and I are originally from Essex, but we moved to Stotfold just before our son was born almost 12 years ago. We quickly settled here and we both really enjoy being part of the Stotfold community. When you’re not out and about cleaning Matt, how do you choose to spend your free time and relax? I enjoy running. I ran the Manchester marathon a couple of years ago and I definitely plan on participating in some more long distance runs in the future.
If you could invite three people to dinner (it’s the classic question but we love it!) from any time in history, who would it be and why?
Robin Williams - Because he seemed like such a kind, genuine and funny person. Bill Nicholson - Being a Spurs fan, I would love to know what it was like managing such a successful Spurs team.
Bob Dylan - Hopefully he would sing and play for us, although it is Bob Dylan, so it would only be if he wanted to!
Matt, the Cleaning Hub has quite a following on social media (including TikTok, Instagram and facebook) can we look forward to more funny anecdotes during 2024? (If you havent followed the Cleaning Hub as yet then you need to!) Oh absolutely! I have some great TikTok ideas for this year so watch this space! We hope you
Matt proudly showing off his advertising board at Stevenage Boro!
Next month we look forward to chatting to another of our local business owners!

Your LETTERS Dear Editor,
Dear Editor,
I just wanted to write to thank Satchells Estate Agents, together with the Stotfold and Arlesey News for awarding me the Christmas Hero 2023 for both towns.
Every day when we watch the news, we see so many signs of aggression and hatred - it’s refreshing therefore when you see love and thoughtfulness shown in our own community.
I was hugely surprised and both touched and humbled to receive the award ; it means so much to me. Thank you also to Satchells Estate Agents for the wonderful hamper, really lovely. Many thanks to the many people who have taken the trouble to contact me with congratulations, very much appreciated. Happy New Year to you all. Love from Lindsay x Dear Editor, I would like to thank Jan and her staff at the Stag for providing 2 excellent Christmas meals. These were for people who attend Age UK Hertfordshire 10 to 3 clubs. On 28th December Jan provided a FREE 3 course Christmas meal for local people and for those who attend Age UK Clubs. It was excellent a very kind and caring gesture everyone really enjoyed it. Margaret Ephgrave
Today in the Co-op the lady in front of me being served had special needs and was taking a rather long time. The sales assistant serving her showed her both patience and care. Outside as I was returning my trolley, a man said “shall I put that back for you” - I thanked him. What a gentleman! As I drive through Stotfold, I always notice how at least 90% of drivers acknowledge you if you let them through, as do the children if you stop at the zebra crossing. I know every town has it’s issues but on the whole, we are, I believe, blessed to live in a place which often reflects the best of human nature. Little moments of goodwill, but they mean a lot and make Stotfold a special place. Catherine Lacey.

Stotfold Short Mat Bowls,
Stotfold Art Club Update: In recent years, canvas mounted directly onto a wooden base has provided artists with a cheap and easy way of making a picture, without the need for expensive framing. This is most suited to oils and acrylics. However a special water - colour primer for canvas has been developed and Jenny Musselwhite's painting of Hogweed shows how effective this can be. Jenny is one of the Art Group's card makers and she loves to include a fairy in her designs! For more details on our club, please contact 07734 304590

Lindsay is a true
Christmas Hero!
Back in December you may recall we announced the winner of our 2023 Christmas Hero as Lindsay Evans. Lindsay was nominated for her wonderful work within the community, going above and beyond in her role as Pharmacy Assistant at Arlesey Chemist. Lindsay will be a familiar face to many as she has lived in Stotfold for many years. Lindsay’s Christmas Hero award, sponsored as always by Satchells Estate Agents, also happened to coincide perfectly with her retirement! Lindsay, (who happened to be on holiday when we last went to print) received a luxury hamper as her prize.

Update from Stotfold Watermill
It may be winter outside, but in the Mill it’s really jolly chilly - anyone who’s popped in for a meeting, to do some work or chat about volunteering with us can vouch for that – but the cold weather doesn’t stop us!
During January we’ve been busy sorting out our Open Days for the next year (you can check which Sundays we’re open on our website!) and making plans for this year’s Steam Fair – on the 11th and 12th May. Did you know, the first Steam Fair was back in 2004! This means it’s our 20th year, and we’re planning a super show as a result. There’s going to be a large and completely FREE Kids Zone, with inflatables for all ages; the central arena with awesome acts like the Rockets (https://therockets.co.uk/about-us/), the Tug of War and the Steam Parade; steam engines and vintage cars; and live music in the beer tent; plus of course the Mill will be in action! Other than that, you can also enjoy Live@TheMill on the Friday night (tickets are available from our website) with bands PopScene and Desert Penguins; trade stalls with a huge variety of goods; the fun fair and lots more!
Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a long-time supporter, the Stotfold Mill Steam Fair is a brilliant day out for the whole family (including the dog). Tickets and further details are available on our website: www.stotfoldmill.com
Of course, all this work doesn’t happen without a small army of people in the background, from the showground coordinator to the team leaders who help to run the Mill itself.
If you can offer your time at the Mill, whether it’s every Sunday in the tea-room or once a year scanning tickets at the Steam Fair, we’d like to hear from you.
You can get in touch via enquiries@stotfoldmill.com; on our website; via Facebook or come and find us at the Mill from 24th March. We can’t wait to welcome you all back to the Mill.

Our school clubs are all well under way with some new activities available as the children settle back into the new term.
There will be a number of Class Assemblies held during February – 7th, 16th and 28th for Amethyst, Opal and Diamond Classes respectively. As always parents and close relatives are invited to attend and enjoy! Please look out for more information and dates in our weekly school newsletter or on our website. Our decarbonisation works are nearing completion, however, the need for an Electricity Substation has meant the final connectivity is yet to take place. We are hoping it will not take too long for the formalities regarding this to be in place. In the meantime, the DFE have now included potential solar panels into their decarbonisation project so we will shortly be assessed to see whether our roofing is suitable for us to progress with this initiative. We are also looking forward to our school field being reinstated and made usable again, hopefully in time for the summer.

News from Roecroft Lower School
The start of the year is well underway, and school is a hive of activity, Spring is always a busy term and packed full of teaching and learning. Please do take a moment to explore our school website if you’d like to see what we are all learning in school.
This month we have an update from our KS2 team: Year 3 returned to school in January after the Christmas break full of enthusiasm and looking forward to the Spring term. We started the term by reading some classic myths and legends and focused on a traditional tale called ‘The Tiger Child’. The children enjoyed writing their own versions of the story.
In Geography we have started studying land use. We had fun exploring ordnance survey maps of both urban and rural areas of the UK and learned some of the symbols and how to use a key when working with maps. In Art, our topic has been based on the work of artist Georgia O’Keeffe. We studied how she used shape, tone and shading in her drawings and the children started using these skills in their own sketches. They then developed their watercolour skills to create their final piece of artwork. Pictured left: Artwork by Georgia O’Keefe
Romans’ impact on Britain and especially what changes they bought about in our local area. We are learning about the discovery of Dicket Mead which is now known as the Welwyn Romans Baths and are even getting to visit soon to see them first hand. The Roman Bath Museum at Welwyn.
We will then use our newfound knowledge to write persuasive leaflets and newspapers about the Baths in our English lessons.
In DT, we're exploring mechanisms and are going to be creating moving cars. We're going to use our knowledge of circuits from science and then race them against each other!
Wishing you a February filled with love and laughter, Mrs Cross and the Roecroft family.
We have also developed our knowledge of coding in computing lessons. Year 4 have started swimming lessons at Saxon Pool, They are also starting to put their sporting knowledge into action in PE lessons by applying their skills in netball and basketball games this term. In the classroom, we have started a new History topic exploring the

News from Fairfield Park Lower School This half term has been rich in learning and experiences for children at Fairfield Park. The children thoroughly enjoyed their International Week and impressively can recall facts about the world’s continents, oceans and countries as well as learning about diverse local customs, sports, dance, art and music too!
Continuing our love for the Arts, our Young Voices choir sang gloriously at the impressive venue of the O2 Arena and raised the roof with their voices. Performing at this venue is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we were very proud of the choir; the event showed all their hard work and practice had paid off. Well done to all involved. Learning in classrooms has seen children develop answers to enquiry questions such as: what makes a good storyteller?; what is at the ends of the Earth? and what is self expression?
14
Our geography, history, art and DT lessons are shaped around these questions and children have the opportunity to build their responses over the weeks and become deeper thinkers at the same time too. During the Spring term the topics that are being covered by all classes are: Nursery - The Sky Reception – Traditional Tales Year 1 - Wonderful Weather Year 2 - Ice Worlds Year 3 - Law & Order Year 4 - Fast Fashion

others will offer pupils the chance to tailor their educational diet.
As the school continues to grow further opportunities arise as a consequence of new staff joining the school. This year it has been fantastic to have our prospective artists enjoying art club, future scientists attending astronomy club, Drama club attracting more pupils and the general number of activities increasing every term. This will hopefully continue as we look to recruit our next round of teaching and support staff. Over the course of the next few months another ten or eleven teachers will join the school including Business, PE, science, English, maths and many others. As a school that has grown from under 60 to what will be over 900 pupils next September, with a corresponding increase in staffing, it is great to see the opportunities for pupils and staff expand accordingly. It was great to have a visit from Jonathon Duff - Regional Schools Commissioner, East of England region in January. Jonathon is a senior member of staff at the DfE and took the opportunity to tour the school and discuss the development of the school. With outstanding outcomes at KS2, high levels of recruitment and a full range of extracurricular activities their was much to celebrate. We took the opportunity to tour the school and visit lessons and as always pupils made a fantastic impression. The next few months are extremely busy as we begin to prepare our pupils for assessments and the next stage of their education. Working in schools is exciting and fast moving without any time to pause. At PBA we are always thinking about the next step, and what needs to be in place to make that successful. Fortunately we have a body of pupils who are both receptive and excited by what they need to do next and as such the time really does fly by. Steve Adams - Principal. PBA

January has been a stormy month, and we hope many of you managed to come through unscathed. Don't forget if you see something out on the highways and byways they can be reported to the landowner by reporting on 'fixmystreet'. Alternatively, either contact the office or our highway representative Cllr Jon Smith.
We have been working on compiling the results of this year’s residents survey, results which will be reported in a later issue of the Stotfold News, via our website and at the annual town meeting on Thursday 7th March 2024 at the Memorial Hall.
Recently, we have done some work on our strategic plan for the next 3 years. Keep an eye out for dates as you have an opportunity to come along, look at what we have produced and help input to our plan. The strategic plan is what is planned longer term for our residents and community, aspirations, and commitments. Have a look on our website for the current plan. We are also building on the foundations we made last year following the increase to the precept. We appreciate that the rise was untimely, however, we have had to realise as many have, that costs have increased for everything. Having said that, this year we have been able to add additional scrutiny to the finances through external audit and make further commitments to the future for our community. Delivering more here in our town where services matter is a priority, and for us, it is about delivering efficient solutions and service where we can, to benefit the wide demographic that we have. We are committed to investing in our communities. Cllr Steve Buck Mayor, Stotfold Town Council

Need Project
•DECEMBER 2023 - OUR BUSIEST MONTH YET.
Update from the
December facts & figures..
www.theneedproject.org
• 1264 parcels provided. • 288 top-up-bags collected from our Pop-up sites • £140.940-the estimated value of the food for the month of December. • £25,000 - the value of Christmas presents we gave out this year. • £6,602.50 - the average monthly cost to run the charity (Rent, Insurance, Fuel, Van, Staff related expenses) • 2023 - Our busiest month yet. • 2451 The amount of adukts we have helped in December • 93 - the amount of pensioners we have helped. •2,448 - the number of children we have managed to help this month (figures above include our best before food.) Well, what can I say, an amazing, amazing December.
Without your help, I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, we could not do it. We could never manage at all, but with your help we can do amazing things for our neighbours, who are struggling in these difficult times. Our website has all the details, which really are incredible, but also shocking, as our workload continues to grow month on month.
We tried to put a value on what we do, but it’s very difficult, as we don’t have to pay for all the food or all the presents, we delivered over Christmas, but to give you an idea if we had to buy everything this is what the stats would read. 1,030 Christmas hampers, 234 normal hampers, £25,000 worth of new presents. Add 288 top up bags which would normally have gone in landfill. In total along with 2,000 volunteer hours, we valued all that work in 16 days at £161,750, which is amazing. We are so so grateful; we could not do it without you. There are so many people to thank and to name them all would take too long and also, I don’t want to forget someone’s name or I’ll be in big trouble. You know who you are and from the bottom of our hearts we thank you. Personally, I’m so grateful to every single person who volunteered this Christmas and obviously throughout the year, but at Christmas we get the chance to meet people who come every year like the ladies from the Sikh temple and the ladies who come as a team from the children’s centre, and every other individual who comes.
Please continue to pray for us as we go into next year, as we seek Gods will for us regarding chasing development funding for the building (if we get it) and totally separately, seek core funding. Our priority, which is and always will be, is feeding our hungry neighbours. These lines of funding are totally different to each other. To develop the building vision, we have to apply to different funders. Likewise, our bread and butter funding for food and running costs cannot be used for development. So please pray for us as we tackle the next stage of our journey. We know our work is growing and shows no signs of slowing down. We also need a place of our own, which is big enough for our purposes and somewhere we can develop into a great space for our community which will be open to all. Thank you again. As I write this on the 5 January, we are 4 working days into 2024 and we are up to150 referrals already. Bit worrying but God has got us this far. Praise God always, Gordon To contact the Stotfold News Magazine please call 01462 731986

Train As A Fire Safety Volunteer
As new Year resolutions go, this one is pretty cool - If you are still deciding what yours is going to be (or have broken your January one already!) then look no further. If you enjoy helping out in your community and have a few extra hours to spare then read on to see how you can become a Bedfordshire Fire & Rescue Service volunteer.
HELP YOURSELF – AND OTHERS – BY VOLUNTEERING
energy companies, charities and other grant-making bodies.
VOLUNTEERING could be one of the best moves you ever make, both for you and the people you’d be helping – and Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service has some particularly rewarding volunteer roles on offer around Stotfold and Arlesey.
If you’re passionate about vulnerable people being safer in their home and you have good person-to-person skills, supporting our home visits could be your perfect volunteer role. Home visitors provide practical information on staying safe at home, additional guidance on health, wellbeing and crime prevention, and free installation of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to eligible residents.
Or what about helping people who are struggling in affording to heat their home safely and can’t access the internet? The Fire Service’s Fuel and Utility Support Volunteers enable these vulnerable people to identify and apply for help from local authorities,
24
Volunteers are a huge part of the service we offer.
Community Safety Advocates promote fire and other safety messages in their area. This can include assisting staff who are giving talks, sharing safety information in public places and with local groups, at events, gathering feedback, or even giving pre-prepared talks yourself when you’re confident! The Service is also keen to hear from anyone who could enable more people from under-served communities to access its advice and support, assisting as a Diversity and Inclusion volunteer.
Whichever role you choose, volunteering is a brilliant way to ‘give back’ and to make a real difference in your local community by helping to keep people and property safer. You get to use your existing skills and knowledge and to develop new ones while gaining valuable experience and building self-confidence. Times of volunteering are flexible to fit in with your other commitments and travel expenses are reimbursable. The Fire Service provides all information, training and equipment needed along with comprehensive ongoing support and opportunities for personal development. Plus you get to be part of the fantastic team at Beds Fire! • Find out more – contact Volunteer Manager janet.brennan@bedsfire.gov.uk or phone 07543 301604 • Book a Home Fire Safety Visit – Request a visit on www.bedsfire.gov.uk or email homefiresafetyvisit@bedsfire.gov.uk Freephone 0800 043 5042, We look forward to speaking to you and giving you more information on how to get involved.

Mental Health Matters- with Jo Loach Do something different..
As we move further into this new year, it may feel like life is gaining momentum. Good intentions set in January may already feel like a distant memory, lost to the busyness of life. But, while the year is no longer brand new, each month, week, day or even hour, offer their own opportunity to begin again.
And so, if we find ourselves falling back on repeating last year’s ways, whether good or bad, all is not lost! Each month offers a chance to review and reset by reflecting on what we need or want to differently and how to do so. If we are willing to stop and look at our schedules, we may notice what works and what doesn’t. When we set simple, small changes that make life easier or more enjoyable, we are more likely to stick to them which in turn encourages us to build upon them.
When it comes to maintaining mental health, it can help to go back to basics to see what simple tweaks could support us. We often know what we need but when life gets busy, we may forget to implement good sleep routines, staying hydrated, eating healthily, being physically active, getting outside, maintaining fulfilling relationships and protecting times of rest and play.
The latest research regularly confirms the links between body, mind and heart and thus the importance of looking after the whole system. We all tend to have our strengths and weaknesses when it comes to practising self-care. It is as important to acknowledge what we do well as it is to consider how to improve the areas we struggle with. If we are repeatedly struggling with the same areas, we may need a different approach or even to seek some form of help.

St Guthlac’s Church, Astwick..
February is no more enjoyable weather-wise than January. Two weeks into the month, though, we have a reason to warm up as St. Valentine's Day sweeps the world on February 14th, where we celebrate love. We also have hope. The bulbs will push through, the grass will grow and the crops will push through the cold winter ground. A time of rebirth. And it will be the same for us if we trust in His strength to persevere, knowing He promises to be always with us. Our services are every 1st Sunday of the month at 11:15am. We look forward to welcoming you. Rev. Jane Wheatley St Guthlac’s Church Astwick Road, SG5 4BH

Thank you to Gordon Goodwin for allowing us to borrow this splendid photograph dating back from 1956/7 and featuring the Stotfold St John’s Ambulance Brigade. Do you know any of the people pictured here? Gordon can recall a few names but we’d love to find out more? If you can help us or if you have any pictures you would be able to supply us to use in this monthly feature then we’d be delighted to hear from you - simply call us on 01462 731986 or email us at stotfold.news@yahoo.co.uk
