From the Editor Welcome to January! HAPPY NEW YEAR to all our readers! We hope you are reading this with something festive in one hand (a mince pie or something stronger!) and the magazine in the other.

Our January issue is published slightly earlier this month due to our wonderful delivery volunteers having enough time to get their magazines out and still have plenty of time for their Christmas plans. We are so grateful to each and every one of them for making the time to deliver for us at such a busy time of year! We welcome Paul Hammond to our team of volunteers this month as long term delivery helpers Christine and Mike move house. We wish them all the very best in their new home and thank them for their much appreciated support. CONGRATULATIONS! Christmas Hero 2018

We are delighted to announce the winner of this year’s Christmas Hero - Sandra Bailey!

A familiar face around Stotfold, Sandra was nominated by friend June Roads for the many, many ways in which she offers her help to people around her. Sandra is extremely busy visiting elderly friends, running errands for them and making their lives that much easier. Our judges felt that this nomination just clinched the title for 2018.

Runners up this year were John Cooper, nominated by friend Carol Trudgill for the wonderful help and assisitance he provides to elderly friend Queenie Day. John actually recieved two nominations this year for all of his hard work. Congratulations John. Congratulations also to our second runner up for 2018 Dawn Frankland. Dawn will be known to some people as the Regional Commisioner for the Girl Guiding unit in Stotfold. Dawn was nominated by reader Celena Dell for the many, many hours she puts into her role within the Girl Guides and for the way in which she goes above and beyond her usual duties, ensuring that hundreds of young girls receive the very best experience of guiding they can possibly get.

Three very deserving winners for 2018 we hope you will agree. We were thrilled to have received more nominations this year than ever, proving that the community spirit in Stotfold is stronger than ever. Each person that received a nomination will be notified by post as we are sure they will enjoy reading about who nominated them and why they were put forward for this award. Christmas Hero 2018 was sponsored by Satchells and we thank them for their kind support this year.

Pamper & Prosecco Event Raises Huge Funds For Garden House Hospice If you recall back in November we featured Stotfold ladies Carly Tiplady and friend Jen Powell who were raising funds for the Garden House Hospice by organising a Pamper & Prosecco Evening. The event took place on Saturday 24th November and was a terrific success with a large variety of stalls and treatments taking place on the night, complimenting an outstanding raffle which contributed greatly to the final funds. We are thrilled to provide readers with an update on how much money the girls raised. Together with match funding and Gift Aid the girls managed to raise a tremendous ÂŁ9,260. The event was held in memory of Carly’s mum Bev who spent some time in the Hospice during 2018. Carly told the Stotfold News Magazine ‘Our family would like to thank everyone that attended, participated and supported the evening, including close family and friends. We are totally overwhelmed at the support we have received and the amount of money we were able to raise. It is a great comfort for our family to be able to give something back to such a wonderful place’.

Fundraisers Jen Powell (pictured left) and Carly Tiplay

On behalf of the Garden House Hospice, Harry Folgate was delighted to receive the donation from the girls. ‘On behalf of everyone at Garden House Hospice Care, I would like to thank Carly and Jen for all their hard work and fundraising efforts. Event organisation is never easy, but Jen and Carly put on a truly fantastic evening. The incredible fundraising total that was raised from the event will go a long way to help the Hospice to continually provide a high standard of care for people with life-limiting illnesses in our area. Carly has also been kind enough to use the money raised from her event to support our ‘Big Give’ project to help provide funding that will allow the Hospice to set up therapeutic support groups for patients, friends and relatives for the first time ever. Thank you very much Carly and Jen, your support is greatly appreciated! The Garden House Hospice is very close to the hearts of us here at the Stotfold News Magazine and as you may well know, they are our chosen charity each year for donations. You can get involved with the fundraising for the Hospice also this year by supporting the Great Christmas Tree-Cycle event. In return for a small donation, the team at the Garden House Hospice will arrange collection of your Christmas tree for recycling between the 5th and the 8th of January. Tree’s must be stripped of all decoration and left outside your home ready for collection on a date you arrange direct with them. To book your slot, please use the contact details below - all bookings must be made by 3rd January. Do something great this Christmas and help your local hospice. Letters to the Editor Dear Joanne,

I just had to write in to the Stotfold Magazine to thank the wonderful staff and Manager of our local Co-op store after they came to my aid following my recent illness. I am an older lady living alone who unfortunately endured a serious case of gastroenteritis at the start of December. With nothing in the house I was at a complete loss as to how I was going to be able to get to the local shop to collect some simple groceries. I called the local Co-op and explained my predicament to the local manager. Although the store do not offer a delivery service he was only to happy to arrange my shopping to be bought to my door where I paid the lovely girl that accompanied it the amount due. Without doubt, the store really went above and beyond and truly helped me in my time of need. I would like to say a big thank you to them all for aiding my recovery - I am now well on the way to feeling much better.

A tremendous group of volunteers organised and manned this event for its 7th appearance on Saturday 17th November receiving support from many local businesses with both cash and gift donations. There were numerous craft stalls along with tombola’s where dozens of prizes were available for both adults and children plus a raffle where the main prize of a beautiful seasonal hamper (provided by First Step Estate Agents, as well as their £100 cash donation) was won by Dave Waller of Ickleford.

Our thanks go to all those involved and especially to the huge number of visitors whose attendance allowed us to present the First Stotfold Scout Group with the grand sum of £1,070.05 (with a further £100 pledged and yet to be received).

Cafe Connect Opens In Stotfold! A couple of months back we told you about a brand new local cafe opening for people in need and those needing help overcoming social isolation and loneliness in Arlesey. We are delighted to inform our readers that this cafe is now coming to Stotfold! The aims of the cafe are to help people make connections with others, share experiences, provide support, connect with community groups, be active and enjoy refreshments all at the same time! The cafe opened in November at the Need project and will be open EVERY MONDAY thereafter - please see the advertisement below for times.

Arlesey resident David shares his experiences of Cafe Connect.

Here’s how the Arlesey cafe helped local resident David. ‘When I first came to the group I was suffering severe depression and spent a lot of time at home on my own. I was glad to hear about a group that I could get involved with. Although my depression is still there, I am not feeling as low as I used to. There have been some days when I have wanted the world to end, but joining the group and getting myself out of the house and mixing with others, lifts me up and makes me feel otherwise. Every time I walk in to the group I know that I will be welcomed by a friendly face and someone ready to listen. Everyone is treated the same regardless of their backgrounds and I think that is important. I have struggled with my weight for a while and was therefore pleased to see not just tea and cake on offer but also a variety of fruits! Little things like this are encouraging and make a difference. I want for these groups to grow from one to many because I know there are many people in this town that live on their own, are lonely and need something to help them get out and meet new people. I believe we are all here to help each other. Well done to everyone at Central Bedfordshire Council and NOAH for making this happen. If you would like to meet new people and feel the cafe could help you then they would be delighted to see you. Full contact details for the group can be found below.

News from

Stotfold Watermill

A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!

Whether you are a member of our many volunteer teams or simply one of the hundreds of visitors who came to the mill during the past year, we hope you will continue to support and join us in enjoying a very successful and exciting 2019 at Stotfold Mill. We are working very hard during the winter months to not only ensure that that the Mill will once again prove a major visitor attraction when it re-opens next Spring, but also to establish its secure future as a Stotfold community asset.

On a Saturday in November seven members of the Milling Team undertook a full day’s maintenance of the milling machinery – sustained by a steady supply of refreshment by the team leader’s wife! There is always plenty of work needed to be done to keep the mill wheels turning so new volunteers with an engineering interest are always welcome. Further details about volunteering for this or any other of our teams can be found on the website www.stotfoldmill.com. The Education Team have already drawn up a programme of children’s activities for next year’s school May half term and summer holidays. These will once again include Nature Detectives, Skull Island, Kitchen Science and a Printing Workshop. On Sundays, children visiting the mill will have the opportunity to: • Grind their own corn. • Use Activity sheets– Count the Rats & Mice, Mystery Photos,Can You Find It? • Follow the Milly the Mouse Trail. • And in the Ivel Room when there are no Exhibitions -dress up as a miller or Victorian maid, smart board games, role play using puppets, construction using cogs and wheels, colouring sheets, sorting game, plaiting to make friendship bracelets.

The team are also already taking bookings for visits by youth groups to both the Mill and the Nature Reserve and are very much hoping that schools around the area will realise the educational opportunities and learning experiences that are available. Leaders and Teachers interested in finding out more can visit the website or email enquiries@stotfoldmill.com. As a new venture, to further open up the Mill to the community, we have welcomed local therapist, Debbie Gribben from Your Inner Peace, together with Pam Mullett and Jurek Dabrowski from Sound and Silence Resonant Healing who will be hosting a Sound Bath on Wednesday 6th March 2019 - 6.45pm until 8.15pm at The Stotfold Watermill. All profits from this session will enable a person affected by cancer to have a free complimentary therapy treatment with Debbie or private Sound Bath with Pam. Please telephone to attend this Sound Bath session. If you have been affected by cancer or someone you know has and would enjoy a free treatment please get in touch. Telephone Debbie on 07815934731/01462730415 email: hello@yourinnerpeace.uk.com www.yourinnerpeace.uk.com.

It is hoped that if this evening is successful Debbie will hold further alternative therapy sessions at the Mill in the future. We are aiming for the future of the mill to be run by volunteers from the community for the community. If you think you might have an idea to promote this wonderful building by holding an event to benefit the community please contact us. A starting point, of course, will be our Steam Fair and Country Show on 11th, 12th May. Book the date for Stotfold’s biggest event of the year. More details next month

Letters to the Editor Dear Joanne,

First let me thank you for your continued support throughout the year of so many events held around the town, including those below, and for promoting them in your magazine.

Over the first weekend of December residents and visitors were invited to visit the Greenacre Centre on Saturday for the indoor market, Santa’s story time and town ‘lights on’ proceedings with music provided by Stotfold Salvation Army band and songs from St. Mary’s schoolchildren. The event was very well attended and all funds raised will go towards maintaining and growing the lighting display for the town. A big thank you goes to those involved in the organising, especially to the Town Council staff and other volunteers who helped put it together, along with local shops and businesses who provide support and sponsorship for our benefit.

On Sunday the long established Silverbirch Avenue illuminations were equally well attended where Santa and his sleigh arrived, pulled by two mischievous reindeer, to greet the children with sweets and a photo opportunity for their families. A huge Thank You goes to the Werrett family and all of their neighbours in the Avenue for their continued support of this event along with ‘Box of Cakes’ Emma for organising refreshments and musical back-up during the evening. Donations received amounted to £143.70 to be passed on to the Local Need Project.

The support of all those who attended was very much appreciated, we hope to see you all again next year and that more will be inspired to extend the illuminations on their own houses to brighten up the town and spread good cheer. Best Regards Alan Cooper Stotfold Mayor.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

I was pleased to read Councillor Alan Cooper's letter in the December edition of Stotfold News. May I concur with all he said, especially his remark that the variety of shops and other services in Stotfold has greatly diminished.

Stotfold was where I was born and I am still residing here 85 years later. It saddens me to think of the shops which have closed down and others, such as the Co-op, whose range of products has greatly decreased. A long time ago, the Co-op used to sell clothes, shoes and a large selection of household items, as well as food. Janice Clegg

Dear Editor,

Dear Joanne,

Having just received a copy of Stotfold News Magazine in the post I wanted to drop you a line to say what a lovely magazine you have, with lots of local events and news.

We plan to see how our advert goes for six issues and then we would be looking to think about upgrading the advert to a larger colour one.

Hope you and the family have a great Christmas. Kind Regards, Steve Coates S & S Coates Surveying & Design

I'd like to say a massive "Thank you" to everyone that supported this year’s Silverbirch Avenue Christmas Light Switch on event on Sunday December 2nd.

Thank you also for the generous donations received for The Need Project and also for the huge amount of mince pies donated by the kind residents of Silver Birch Avenue. In total £143.80 was raised and will go towards making a great difference to families in need this Christmas.

Crowds Enjoy This Year’s Switch-On Events! Crowds gathered at both Stotfold Light Switch On events during the first weekend of December. Saturday 1st saw hundreds of people enjoying the shopping, singing and festive cheer inside the Greenacre Centre followed by the big ‘switch on’ around the tree at 6.30pm. Crowds were entertained by the Stotfold Salvation Army band whilst children enjoyed the ever popular ‘Storytime with Santa’. St Mary’s Academy School Choir sang beautifully before the light switch on ceremony was performed by Stotfold Mayor Alan Cooper together with the man himself Santa Claus.

Sunday 2nd December brought many people out once again to enjoy the Silverbirch Avenue Christmas Light Switch On event. This event is run each year by the residents of the road who invite the Stotfold public to enjoy carols, mince pies and festive cheer whilst they switch on the Christmas Lights in their homes. The proceeds from this event were donated to The Need Project. Children were once again enthralled with special guests Santa and his Reindeers!

Pictured top, hundreds enjoy the Stotfold Town Council Switch On Event Below, Santa pictured with Stotfold Mayor Alan Cooper

Both events were supported by the Stotfold Magazine however huge thanks must go to everyone involved in ensuring these events run without a hitch. So many people work tirelessly behind the scenes ensuring that Stotfold has a great start to the festive season. Great Support At This Years Christmas Fayre This year’s Stotfold Community Christmas Fayre was a great success raising over £1200 for the First Stotfold Scout Group. There were a huge array of stalls and even the chance for children to meet Santa. The event was supported by local Estate Agent First Step who donated £100 to the funds as well as a fantastic hamper for the raffle.

Alan Cooper Stotfold Mayor commented ‘Stotfold Community Christmas Fayre was a great event with lots of visitors from Stotfold and surrounding towns. Well over ÂŁ1000 was raised to help fund the 1st Stotfold Scout Group which is fantastic. Huge thanks to everybody that supported the event once again this year.’ The Community Christmas Fayre is an annual event which raises much needed funds for different local groups every year. The event encourages local schools and groups to come together and raise money for their own means as well as raising funds for the particular chosen charity. A fantastic time was had by all - as always with these events there are a core group of people that keep these things running. Well done to everybody involved in another successful year!

News from

Roecroft Lower School. A very Happy New Year from the staff and children at Roecroft Lower School. We hope you enjoyed a restful festive period and were able to spend precious time with friends and loved ones.

As always, the end of Autumn term was incredibly busy, when I wrote this I had just watched two wonderful performances by the Reception team. They really shone and had worked so very hard on their lines and singing. Now I am super excited to be watching the Year 2 and Year 3 classes over the coming weeks. They will be amazing! We welcome a new member of staff to our Roecroft family this term. Mrs Kirsty Taylor will be taking on the role of Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator, and she is very much looking forward to working with some of you and getting fully immersed into life at Roecroft. We are also happy to report that our annual collection for the Royal British Legion raised an impressive £386. We also raised an incredible £833 on our Children in Need ‘Do Your Thing’ day.

An Update from the Key Stage 2 Team: After an exciting and eventful Christmas with the Year 3 ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ show and Year 4 Christmas Carol Assembly, we have all enjoyed a well-deserved rest.

This January we look forward to launching our Spring Term topics. The Year 3’s are looking forward to enjoying a Viking Day, where they will be able to come into school dressed up as Viking! The Year 4 children will begin their study of the local area in Geography, which will include researching key geographical features in Stotfold and the surrounding areas.

Later on in January we will be taking part in a Drama Workshop, which is linked to our school values, and Year 4 will begin their swimming lessons. Our Values for January are: Cooperation and Responsibility.

We are very much looking forward to lots of learning and fun in 2019!

Fairfield Lower School A Happy New Year from all at Fairfield Park.

Thank you to our parents and school community who came to watch all the different Christmas concerts before the Christmas break. We were exceptionally proud of all our children and teachers, Christmas was a very special time throughout Dickens Boulevard and Ruskin Drive sites.

This January we welcomed all our children back to school on 3rd January after the festive break. We also have some new starters to our squirrels classes in Nursery, all of whom are settling nicely into their new surroundings and routines. We have also celebrated Chinese new year with a special lunch at both school sites.

This month KS1 children will be attending a Multi Skills event at Samuel Whitbread Academy and KS2 children an Gymnastics event at the beginning of next month. We will also be holding our spring term parent consultations in February. We look forward to welcoming our parents into the school to discuss their children’s progress. News from

St Mary’s Academy. We finished 2018 with our great Christmas Concerts entitled ‘Christmas Crackers’. The children did us proud as always and through donations from family and friends, we raised much needed funds for our chosen Charity ‘Young Epilepsy’.

We also held our School Association Winter Wonderland which proved as popular as ever and a lot of fun. This willing group of parents contribute so much to the life and work of St Mary’s; we are very appreciative of all they do. A big thank you to all involved. We have also thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas lunch, class parties and pantomime. Our school choir sang beautifully on a number of occasions at St Mary’s Church, in school and also to local groups.

2018 was a busy and interesting year for St Mary’s. All staff have worked extremely hard and we are looking forward to a positive and even more successful 2019.

We will continue to support the many charities that we do each year. We are part of a very generous and caring community and had a fantastic response to our collections last year which included Sports Relief, MacMillan Cancer Support, Royal British Legion, British Heart Foundation, Save the Children, Addenbrookes - The Sick Children’s Trust and Young Epilepsy. We also managed to raise over £360.00 towards BBC Children In Need. Thank you as always. News from

Stotfold Football Club Unfortunately, the first team are still awaiting that first elusive league win. Performances in November were very disappointing with us surrendering the lead on a couple of occasions with only one draw to show for our efforts. The Development team recorded another win, but their results remain disappointing. Our January fixtures are shown below and do look on the website for any further information as we do not yet have fixtures for the Development team. You are assured a warm welcome at Roker Park. As we look forward to a move to our new stadium for season 2019/20, we hope to increase sponsorship and advertising opportunities and if you think there could be an opportunity for your business, please contact our Commercial Manager Rob Parkin (robinparkin@btinternet.com). We are urgently looking for people to help us on match days to assist with match day stewarding, serving teas etc. and food. If you can spare a couple of hours per week, please contact Club Secretary Julie Longhurst (julie.longhurst46@virginmedia.com). Free Hall Hire – our club is available for private (not commercial) functions at no charge but a £50 deposit will be required at the point of hiring which will be refunded if the booking is fulfilled. For full details contact Mo Clarkson on 01462 730765 or email us at the address below.

News from

Stotfold Junior Football Club Happy New Year from all at Stotfold Juniors.

Our Under 10 whites have got through to quarter final of President cup with a convincing win over FC LAFA there are too many scorers to name! Well done whites.

Our U11 Ambers were cruelly knocked out of the cup by a strong Bishops Stortford Team.

The Under 10 Girls (sponsored by New Edge Social) won only their 2nd game of the season on Saturday. Returning to Development League action, they travelled to Bedford to play Wootton Rangers Youth on a very cold and blustery morning. The game was very competitive and was played in a very good spirit by both sides. During the match Stotfold played some very nice passing football and when out of possession, really pressed our opponents to regain the ball. This was great to see, as the team have done a lot of work at training on this in recent weeks.

The under 11 Red's got through to the semi-finals of the Chiltern Junior 7's autumn trophy, losing by just one goal in the final minutes of the game. On the back of a fantastic autumn league they have been promoted a division for the winter league. 28

News from Larksfield Surgery (on behalf of the Larksfield PPG- Patient Participation Group)

OPENING HOURS Monday: 8.00-13.00 14.00-18.00 Tuesday/:Friday: 8.00-18.00 Saturday/Sunday: Closed EXTENDED OPENING HOURS Extended Hours Surgeries take place from: 07.00 - 08.00 on Wednesday or Thursday (not every week). Extended hours appointments must be prebooked. If you need to contact a Doctor in an emergency, when the practice is closed at evenings, weekends and public or bank holidays please ring NHS 111. THE LARKSFIELD PPG YEAR AS we approach the end of 2018, it is a good time to look back and review what the PPG has been doing over recent months. Through this column and our Larksfield News newsletter inside the surgery, we have tried to keep patients informed with our news and the themed events being held in our area. Earlier in the year we advised patients about the Bedfordshire Minor Eye Condition Service. Then, in April, it was announced that dedicated Hearing Clinics are now held at Larksfield Surgery, there was also advice about booking appointments online. We helped to get patients earlier access to the Larksfield building when waiting to book appointments in the early morning. Sessions including the COPD seminar, ‘Festival for Older People’ and the ‘Just Ask’ session run by Healthwatch have kept us very busy this year.

Our most ambitious project was probably conducting the Larksfield Patient Survey in September and October. If you were one of the many people interviewed for the survey, the PPG would like to thank you for responding so readily. Membership of the PPG is currently healthy, with 12 active members. We have recently welcomed three new members, two of whom have valuable NHS experience. If you would like to help the please contact our clerk, Sue, at ppg.larksfield@nhs.net.

BROKEN FRONT DOORS As some of you may be aware the main front doors at Larksfield Surgery broke a few weeks back. We were hoping this would be a short term thing with a quick solution, but unfortunately the doors will need to be completely replaced and this could take between 6-8 weeks. We thank everyone for their patience and understanding in this frustrating time. If you need to access the Surgery, please use the door to the left of the building (near the playing field). Please note this door will not be open before 8am unless we have an extended hour’s clinic from 7am. It has come to light that patients have struggled to get around to the dispensary to drop in prescriptions since the doors have been broken. We would like to remind patients that there is a second post box on the front gates, that patients are able to drop any prescriptions in at any time.

NHS APP AS explained previously we have been selected for the national testing of the new NHS app. We will be sending all patients an invite SMS in due course. If you would like to be part of the testing please follow the SMS link to register. MISSED APPOINTMENTS In october 60 doctors appointments were missed which is 10 hours lost also 81 nurses appointments were missed which is over 14 hours lost. If you make an appointment and then don’t need it, please remember to cancel it.
