From the Editor Welcome to our January issue!

January 2021

Firstly, we would like to wish all of our readers a very Happy New Year! Whatever 2021 brings you, we hope it is filled with happiness and good health for everyone and a return to a more ‘normal’ way of life for us all. As you will know, we collate our magazine a whole month in advance, so as I write this column we are yet to enjoy a rather different Christmas in Stotfold. We will miss all of the festive traditions our community usually has to offer, such as the town light switch on event, the Silverbirch Avenue light switch on and the Salvation Army Christmas Concert to name a few - all of which, have become annual traditions in our household and mark the official start of the festivities for us in the town. This year, Christmas will be more low-key which only makes us appreciate the things we cannot do that much more. We have however enjoyed immensley the vast array of Christmas lights on display in peoples homes this year, with a huge effort made by so many people. As a town we need to congratulate each other and ourselves for keeping up the Christmas spirit as best we could! We hope you enjoy our front cover this month, we thank Shelly Pye for sending this in to us as part of our quest to find the most beautiful local pictures for our 2021 calendar - you can find out further details by checking out our facebook page. This month, we have the absolute pleasure of crowning our Christmas Hero’s for 2020. The judging was incredibly tough this year with so many worthy winners -We truly have some amazing residents living amongst us, you can find out who we chose as the overall winner on Page 6 of your January issue. All that’s left to say is we hope you have enjoyed a wonderful Christmas and look forward to embracing a much more positive 2021.

Joanne.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, I would like to thank the gentleman who lifted me up (I’m no lightweight) after tripping over at the crossroads at The Green on November 19th. Also to the lady who stopped her car and offered me a lift home. The only thing I wounded was my pride, but being of advanced years I was unable to get up unassisted. Kind people still exist even in these difficult times. My thanks again, Maggie Driver Dear Editor, I should like to say a big thank you to Central Beds Councillors for awarding Stotfold Good Neighbour Group (SGNG) a Ward Councillor grant which has enabled us to purchase and develop a secure database. SGNG had to match fund the grant and the database has since been customised to help in the administration of client requests, volunteer activities and other management tasks that a local charity like us has to deal with. The database has enabled us to be so much more efficient and has radically reduced the number of volunteer hours required to run the group effectively. As each year goes by SGNG gains more and more clients. This past year we have had a large increase due to the number of new people requesting help during the Covid pandemic. We have been very happy to support these people and will continue to do so for as long as they need us. The most frequent requests for help have been for the collection and delivery of prescriptions during the lockdown periods. At the height of the lockdown in addition to our other activities our volunteers were delivering approximately 6 prescriptions each day, every day to local residents. This has really mounted up since March 2020 and I would like to thank the volunteers for all their work.

Hero2020 Christmas

We are delighted to announce the winners of our Stotfold Christmas Hero for 2020!

Together with Satchells Estate Agents, the Stotfold News Magazine are proud to present this award to one extra special Christmas Hero from within our community.

With 2020 being such a tricky year for many people, the competition was much harder than ever before. We were astounded at the volume of entries we received, and thank everybody that took the time to nominate.

Dave presented with his certificate by Kevin Duff of Satchells Estate Agents

We are delighted to announce that the Stotfold Christmas Hero award for 2020 goes to Dave Marks. Nominated by close friends and neighbours Gerald and Romilla Smith, Dave and his wife Brenda have really gone ‘above and beyond’ during the last few months ensuring that their neighbours were well looked after during the two recent lock downs. Volunteers of the Stotfold Good Neighbour Group and both Stotfold News delivery volunteers, they have been a lifeline to many, with nothing too much trouble. The judges were so touched by the detail in the entry that they decided unanimously that this years award should be given to Dave for being such a wonderfully caring neighbour and friend. Runner Up this year for Stotfold was Heather Illett. As a senior NHS worker, working from the Lister Hospital, Heather has been working at the forefront of the pandemic for many months. Her determination to help others during this time led to several nominations being received, we wholeheartedly congratulate Heather in receiving the Runner-up award this year and we are sure we echo many people’s sentiment in saying that we are extremely thankfully to Heather and to the NHS as a whole during what has been a most difficult year.

We are delighted to also run this award inside our Arlesey News Magazine this year and thought we would share with you these winners for 2020. In Arlesey first place was awarded to Chris Gravett and his fellow members of Arlesey Good Neighbours who worked tirelessly during the lock down periods ensuring that residents were well looked after, delivering food and providing a caring ear for many people affected during these times. Runner up in Arlesey was Emily Rowlands for the many roles she plays within the community including School Governor, involvement in the local church and instigating many different activities during lock down. We congratulate all of our winners and our nominees for this year. All winners received a luxury Christmas hamper to enjoy and certificates were awarded to the runners up.

News from

Stotfold Watermill

Welcome to 2021…….

Like all of you, we at Stotfold Mill are looking forward to the new year with great enthusiasm as we are confident that it is going to be so much better than the year past. Whilst at the present time much of the future must be uncertain, the arrival of an approved vaccine holds promise that we might find things begin to revert to normal. Certainly, the majority of our volunteers, who are by no means in their youth, should be in the earlier groups to be vaccinated so we hope they will be able to return to welcoming and serving visitors when we are able to open again. We would also be very pleased to have more volunteers come forward to help us ensure a secure future for the mill, particularly if you are looking to contribute a little of your time to the benefit of the community. Information on volunteering can be found at www.stotoldmill/volunteer. If the vaccination programme has the success that has been suggested, by the spring we could be back to opening to visitors on Sunday afternoons with the opportunity to see the mill in action and to enjoy service in Randall’s Tea Room, all be it with appropriate cautionary measures in place. We are also becoming more optimistic that the Steam Fair and Country Show might take place in May and the Major Events team are pressing ahead with exciting plans for the weekend. If it does go ahead, we will need many volunteers to help, particularly if restrictions remain that require more martialling of visitors. Other teams continue to keep in social contact even while they are unable to meet. The Education team held a Christmas Quiz between themselves in early December, perhaps to keep their brains alert so they are ready to inspire visiting children in school parties and youth groups next year. Regrettably, however hard our volunteers try to maintain the mill and the nature reserve for the benefit of the community there seems to be an element who find satisfaction in destroying all that we put in place for the benefit of the local residents and all other visitors. Recently we have found that some people, have spent time in the nature reserve shelter destroying the perspex panels. Doubtless whilst any appeal to those involved to stop this mindless behaviour would likely go ignored, we would ask to them to please enjoy the facilities provided but to preserve them for others. Similarly. it is apparent from reports that throughout the town pre-Christmas wilful destruction of house’s lights and displays has taken place. Can we suggest that much of this cannot go unnoticed and that residents immediately report incidents to the police. A sad ending to our final report for a sorrowful year but let us hope for a brighter 2021.

Our very best wishes to everyone for a better and successful new year and we look forward to seeing you back at the mill again.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, We just wanted to drop you an email about somebody who advertises in the Stotfold News Magazine. Due to lockdown and the reduced level of services available from our GP practices locally, my Dad had to find a local business for his required foot care due to his diabetes. We found Jarvis footcare in the Stotfold News Magazine and would thoroughly recommend the services of Verena Jarvis, all communications back and forth were easy and informative, the level of service and care when conducting the appointment was outstanding. Many thanks Mandy McCracken

Stotfold Co-op Award Local Charities Stotfold Co-op have recently celebrated payouts to three local community groups as elected by Co-op members in their latest round of funding. The Stotfold store joined together with Hitchin and Letchworth to nominate three local charities to benefit from the money raised from their membership card scheme.

The beneficences of this year’s funds were, Finding Me Living Well Despite Cancer, Hitchin Counselling Services and Stotfold based Need Project.

Emma Goudling, Member Pioneer for Co-op stores told the Stotfold News Magazine ‘We were thrilled to award three very worthy charities funds raised through our membership scheme.’ ‘All three charities were so pleased to receive the funding, especially during these incredibly testing times.’ Cheques were presented by Mark Jepps, Stotfold Store Manager (pictured top right) together with members of the Stotfold Co-op team. As you can see, both the Need Project and Finding Me Well Despite Living With Cancer both received cheques for over £5,000.

Members of the Co-op staff team present the cheques to local charities

Funding for these awards is gained by Co-op shoppers nominating a local charity of their choice. When shoppers purchase selected Co-op products and services, 2p from every £1 spent goes into your Co-op Membership account. The Co-op then give the same amount to support community organisations and local causes. In 2020, the Co-op delivered £15m to over 4,500 local causes, thanks to their members. For further information and to find our how to nominate your local charity for a future award visit: www.coop.co.uk and click on membership services.

News from

Pix Brook Academy

New Year greetings from Pix Brook Academy.

We have made it to 2021‌ finally! Perhaps the most unusual year in any of our lives, is in the past and we look forward to the New Year with excitement and optimism. In schools, we are so fortunate to have two fresh starts; the first in September at the beginning of the new academic year and again in January when the new year starts for everyone. I have always felt that this provides a real opportunity for schools to be energised and motivated to look ahead. It feels for us doubly so in that we are in position to take advantage of our new facilities in the phase two part of the building. These areas include DT, Music, ICT, Food and Art spaces that will be used by PBA pupils over the coming years. It really does feel like new beginning.

Pupils enjoying lesson time at Pix Brook Academy

As I write, December is providing the normal grim weather with wind and rain battering the windows. However, as I have reflected in the past, Christmas is an amazing time to be in school, especially with children in Year 5 and 6. Rooms are decorated, carols are being sung and generally a sense of anticipation fills the school. Everyone is looking forward to Christmas lunch and Christmas Jumper Day but this time of year also provides a perfect stimulus for us to consider the plight of many in this country and around the world for whom life has become so difficult. As a school, we place a great deal of importance on the need to understand our place in society and in my conversations with our pupils it is genuinely amazing to hear them speak so maturely about the environment, the homeless and the situation for refugees. These are topics that matter and in our continuing drive to ensure our pupils are socially responsible make for interesting and thought-provoking discussions. Young people seem to have such a clear view of the world, unfettered by mis-information and bias.

Sadly, we have been unable to provide the tours and open evening events that we had planned to undertake. Not to be able to show the school to our existing parents and prospective parents is hugely frustrating. Hopefully by visiting the website and joining the virtual tour of the school you will have a small insight into the life at PBA. We are all crossing our fingers that 2021 will get back to normal and we can once again welcome visitors to our school. From all at PBA we would like to wish you a fantastic New Year and I look forward to seeing many of you in January when the new year starts.

As we write we have just launched our Musical Advent calendar, and the response has been incredible, even reaching the press. A number of schools and local groups in our area participated including Roecroft Lower School, Fairfield Park Lower School, Gothic Mede Academy, Recorders in the Garden and the Salvation Army. It has been an excellent project undertaken by Mrs Emily Hardy, Head of Music, that has brought the whole community together. Christmas Jumper Day, turkey lunch with the trimmings and electronic Christmas cards has kept us in the festive mood. Mrs Elissa Hilsden has made foam thank you wreaths with her class in Design and Technology using the laser cutting machines. Mr Ian Evason, Principal, was taken aback after receiving a lovely message from a student, ‘Thank you for making our school a much better place’. These heartfelt messages make all our jobs so worthwhile. The progress of our students remains our priority, focusing on learning and aiming higher. With our committed families and additional funding, we have welcomed students into school for extra tuition before and after school, we are running additional focused, small group sessions known by our students as intervention lessons and our Meet the Mentor programme is keeping them on track. Every student has a mentor to guide them.

As our prospective parents make their next important school choice for their child, we are disappointed not to be able to allow them to experience the school for themselves. So, we have put a short video for the Year 4 children to see Etonbury from our own children’s perspective with the help of Eve, our Junior Head girl. Take a look on our website to view this. As soon as possible, we will open the school up for those who have chosen us to get a feel for what’s to come. We are sure the children will love it in our new building that promises that small lower school feel so the transition will not be too overwhelming. Thank you to our lower schools, St Mary’s, Gothic Mede, Roecroft and Fairfield Park for handing out our prospectus to their Year 4 children to take home. If you are new to the area and not currently in a feeder school, please contact us and we will have a copy of our prospectus sent out to you. Call 01462 730391. Applications to our school are increasing and children are currently being accepted for places in 5,6,7 and 8 for immediate start, which means they will automatically qualify for entry into the Secondary school. We are always happy to talk you through the application process.

Our value for the month of December was ‘Determination’, and we can all safely say we have achieved that. Wishing you all a very Happy and Healthy 2021 from all at Etonbury Academy.

Pippin Pre-School

We had a wonderful time celebrating Christmas over the last few weeks of term. The children enjoyed many events including Christmas Concerts, Santa’s Grotto and a Christmas Party, we hope our families enjoyed receiving all the special pieces of artwork that the children have produced for them too. We were proud to sponsor two charity events during December, Alzheimers Elf Day and Save the Children Jumper day. We wish to thank all our parents and staff for their continued support with outfits and monetary donations.

Like many charities our fundraising opportunities are currently restricted. We are proud to be a recently registered charity with AmazonSmile. Amazon Smile is a simple and automatic way for you to support a charity of your choice every time you shop at no cost to you. Please visit smile.amazon.co.uk on your web browser and select Pippin Playgroup. For each eligible purchase Amazon will pay us 0.5% of the net purchase price.

The Committee are always looking for new members so if you have a child attending Pippin and can spare a little time each month to attend our meeting and help out with future fundraising activities we would love to hear from you, please email pippincommittee@gmail.com for further information.

We continue to collect donations of plastic bottle tops, unwanted fabric, small yogurt pots, buttons for our gluing station. All donations welcome, please drop off at the office.

The Pre-School reopens on Tuesday 5th January 2021 after the Christmas break, we look forward to welcoming the children back and hearing about all their Christmas celebrations and activities they encountered during the holidays.

Thank you for your interest in our Pre-School. We look forward to sharing more of our news with you again next month.

St Mary’s Academy

We finished 2020 with a 'different' Christmas Concert! As with everything in this year we have had to adapt around the COVID restrictions by filming each class singing their Christmas song within their bubbles and then finishing with the traditional Reception Class Nativity. This will then be added to Tapestry, Dojo and our website for our parents to enjoy. We really missed having our families into school at this special time. We also thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas lunch, class parties and virtual pantomime eve if we didn't have the atmosphere of everyone together in the hall.

Decorating & Property Maintenance

2020 was an unusual year for everyone, including St Mary’s and will never be forgotten. Despite lockdown, restrictions, regulations, separation, isolation and home learning challenges all of our staff and children have worked extremely hard and we are really looking forward to a positive and more balanced 2021. We will continue to support the many charities that we do each year. We are part of a very generous and caring community and had a fantastic response to our collections last year which included MacMillan Cancer Support, Royal British Legion, The Need Project, Save the Children, Keech Cottage, Mary’s Meals, BBC Children in Need and Sport Relief. Thank you to everyone as always. Please look out for our monthly Newsletter here in the Stotfold News or visit our Website www.stmarysacademystotfold.co.uk

News from

Roecroft Lower School

Hello everyone, and welcome to Roecroft Lower School’s news update. Firstly, I would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year, let’s all hope it brings better news and times for us all. This month we bring you updates from our KS1 teams. At Roecroft, we use a phase leadership model, meaning in each year group we have a teacher that leads the team and ensures standards and expectations remain at their highest. These staff always like to share with you an update from some of the learning in their cohorts each month.

Key Stage 1 Update: In Year 1, we were very busy over November and December and joined in with plenty of festive activities to celebrate the Christmas period. We were all very excited to decorate our classrooms, write letters to Santa based upon the Jolly Postman book, act out parts of the Nutcracker story and also take part in real life maths activities. Our maths work was particularly engaging as we measured lengths of wrapping paper, weighed ingredients for Christmas cakes and added small money amounts for gifts. We thought we could perhaps then use these maths skills at home!

Now that it is the Spring term, we have launched a new theme for our learning: A Knight's Tale. Our lessons will be full of exciting activities based upon knights, dragons and castles and this will even include making our own dragon's den to catch Stotfold dragons and our own dragon-themed puppet show on the iPads! We will also be taking a step back in time and fully embracing our knight theme through a fancy dress history day; we will be learning all about the famous Battle of Hastings and we will be working as class teams to create sections of the Bayeux Tapestry! During November and December Year 2 have been continuing with their topic theme of 'Fire and Ice'. In Geography we have been learning about map skills and drawing maps based on the local area of Stotfold using our compass skills. To complement our ice theme, we have been learning about physical and human features in the Arctic and Antarctica. Over the past few weeks in Year 2 we have been studying the famous artist Jackson Pollock and his style of drip painting. The children enjoyed learning to splat paint and created some beautiful pieces of fire- and ice-themed art that reflected Jackson's drip painting style. In November we learnt about Remembrance Day and created some stunning drip painting poppies which were displayed outside Roecroft Lower School. Year 2 took part in Anti-Bullying Week; the theme was to wear your favourite colour to show that we are all unique. The children came dressed up in their favourite colour and we designed some jigsaw pieces with kind messages to show that we are all unique and fit together like a jigsaw. As a school we celebrated Children in Need; pupils came dressed up as their hero or a key worker. In Year 2 we did activities based on five themes; get active, connect with each other, be curious, take notice and to give. Our activities included, making cards for a loved one, doing fun exercises, finding out information to interesting questions, appreciating the little things in life and making a charity poster. Finally, in December Year 2 enjoyed getting in the Christmas spirit by learning to sing ‘Deck the Halls’, putting up the Christmas tree, having Christmas dinner, wearing Christmas jumpers and having Christmas parties. Year 2 will be starting the Spring term with a brand-new theme: Kings and Queens. We will be learning about The Royal Family present and in the past and The Tudors. Our lessons will involve researching and writing a fact file about The Queen, drawing a Royal portrait, making a delicious afternoon tea for the Queen's birthday and performing Royal debates from past Kings and Queens. We will be having a Tudor Day which will involve the children dressing up, having a Royal Banquet, creating art from Tudor times and playing Tudor games. King and Queens is a firm favourite in Year 2 as the children love to learn about our Royal Family!

We wish all our pupils, their families and members of our local community a very Happy New Year.

Fairfield Park Lower School

A Happy New Year from all at Fairfield Park.

We hope everyone had a peaceful and joyous Christmas and extend our very best wishes for the new year to each and everyone of you! Two helping hands and a caring heart" was our festive motto for Christmas at Fairfield Park Lower School at the end of last year. Our staff were keen to ensure that Christmas in school was a special, treasured time as our children had experienced such a turbulent year and we definitely wanted to show that Christmas wasn't 'cancelled'.

The festive season was kicked off with a Christmas story and a mug of hot chocolate and marshmallows for everyone; children also enjoyed a virtual pantomime courtesy of the PTA (thank you!) in each of their class bubbles and the children's creativity shone through with the inaugural inter-class competition for ‘best wreath’. Long-established traditions of Christmas jumpers, traditional Christmas dinner and our candle-lit Christmas assembly continued with some COVID-friendly adjustments and were still equally enjoyable for all. Our strong links with the Baycroft Care Home gave us the opportunity to give back and show gratitude to the workers and also let the residents know we were thinking of them during this challenging year. Each class created a parcel of child-made creations for a nominated resident to spark joy and learn the power of giving to others. In lieu of carolling at the Care Home, we put on a virtual performance and a COVID-safe recording was able to bring the Christmassy feeling to residents instead. Children across the school enjoyed learning and reflecting about pilgrimages and the journeys people take during our 'Spirited Arts' week in early December. These opportunities presented during this week enabled children to explore religions, people and places through arts, drama and music and as a result created their own masterpieces, paintings, models and literature. We are very proud of how our children have taken on the changes, shown flexibility and resilience and adapted to this different type of school-life this past term. The staff commitment and drive to make each school day engaging, fun and safe has enabled children to continue to achieve their potential and develop as Fairfield citizens and we are Conditions treated include spinal also grateful to our parents and carers who have showed their support in these and extremity injuries, neck related challenging times. headaches and sprains/strains. Poppies &Poppyfields Nursery News Happy New Year from all at Poppies and Poppyfields!

Busy times are afoot at our nurseries and out of hours groups! In our nurseries, we have been having a lovely time outdoors, exploring the natural world, painting pebbles, building with logs and branches, and making wonderful concoctions with leaves, water, twigs and mud! All these activities provided invaluable opportunities for learning; science mixing different materials, gross motor skills building amazing assault courses, exploring weights with pebbles and making amazing patterns using Rangoli activities! Diwali was explored, making clay divas and lots of lovely Christmas activities enjoyed by all! Our after nursery/ after school clubs have had fun printing, including making their own printers, team building, construction, mindfulness colouring, making books and also making decorations for Christmas! We currently have some spaces in our nurseries and afterschool provision. Poppies are open from 7.45 a.m to 6 p.m for children aged 2- Reception class (St Mary’s Academy) and Poppyfields 8-6 p.m. for children aged 2 to Year 2 (Fairfield Park Lower School).

Please contact us via email on billpoppies@gmail.com or bullpoppyfields@gmail.com and we will be pleased to help.

May we take this opportunity to wish all readers a Happy New Year. Thankyou for all the support over this last, very tricky, year. Our families, schools and the community have made these times much easier. We are all looking forward to a more settled new year.

News from Larksfield

Surgery

This update is brought to you from the Larksfield Patient Participation Group. VACCINATION UPDATES

GP surgeries have now been requested by NHS England to plan for delivery of: 1. FLU VACCINE to 50 - 64 year olds not in the usual ‘At Risk’ Groups = 2,032 patients 2. COVID VACCINATION = 10,400 patients As you can imagine, this is a massive task for us and we would appreciate if you could help us by:1. Not calling the surgery regarding the above unless asked to do so. 2. If we send you an SMS inviting you to one of the above clinics and you do not wish to receive the vaccine, please reply decline. This really helps us in planning for vaccines we have to order, especially the Covid Vaccine as we believe it may have a very short shelf life which means high wastage if not managed carefully.

Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine As being reported all over the news the Pfizer vaccine is to be used in hospitals only, as logistically it will be very difficult to transport/store and use within 5 days in care homes and GP surgeries. NEWS We have recently been working on providing new community facilities for our Arlesey Road recreation ground. A new project will see provision of a community use type MUGA, play equipment and some outdoor gym equipment. We are also working on providing more opportunities for wildlife on the site, by working with Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity and in conjunction with the Etonbury Green Wheel project, we are looking to provide trees, shrubs and wildflower planting to encourage wildlife and pollinators to the Arlesey Road recreation ground. Both projects should be commenced during next financial year 2021/2022.

St Mary’s Church News.. Welcome to the news from St Mary’s, The Parish Church of Stotfold & Fairfield

The doors of your Parish Church continue to remain open for public worship and private prayer. Every Sunday we offer a short, reflective service at 9.00am which does not include Holy Communion, followed by the 10.00am Parish Communion Service, to which everyone is welcomed. On the first and third Sundays of the month at 4.00pm we hold a Tea Time Praise service. All babies, toddlers and young children are welcome with their grownups. The service uses rhymes and movement to retell Bible Stories. There are also simple crafts. Our 3 January service will have a Christingle theme. We continue to hold a 20-minute service of Morning Prayer in church at 9.00am Monday to Saturday.

A midweek service of Holy Communion takes place each Wednesday at 9.45am. Our church is also open to anyone in the parish for private prayer and reflection on Sundays from 11.00am to 1.00pm and on Wednesdays from 4.00pm to 6.00pm. You can find online versions of our services at www.stotfoldchurch.org.uk. These times are subject to change. Please check our website, www.stotfoldchurch.org.uk, and the notice board outside the church for updates.

You are warmly welcomed to all our services. During the service please wear a face covering and follow the social distancing guidelines which are displayed as you come into church. There are hand sanitiser stations and a sidesperson will guide you to where you can sit to allow for social distancing. If you would like to receive St Mary’s weekly newsletter, the Weekly Messenger, and a link to our online services, please email stotfoldparishchurch@gmail.com
