News from Roecroft Lower School
June was a wonderful month in school, mainly because of the excitement created around the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee! We spent two days celebrating, where we focused on timelines around the history of our Queen’s reign and we also used our Art skills to create a community window display, that hopefully many of you were able to enjoy. We also enjoyed sharing our work in assemblies and picnicking and partying on the school field in the sunshine, where the children and staff dressed in red, white and blue.
This month we have an update from our Key Stage 1 lead, Miss Emmerson.

KS1 have had a wonderful summer term with lots of exciting activities and trips to complement their learning. Year 1 began the term with a local trip to Stotfold Mill where they had the opportunity to explore the mill and make their own flour! They also spent time in the Nature Reserve. Later in the summer term, the Year 1s also had a themed day for their topic 'Boats and Beaches' . They welcomed in an external company who carried out a history-based workshop called 'The Seaside of Today and Yesterday' . The workshop involved a role play of travelling back in time to the seaside of the past and taking part in fun activities such as Punch and Judy and donkey rides! They also enjoyed creating a seaside soundscape and seaside rap which included lots of imaginative ideas!
Elsewhere in KS1, Year 2 also carried out a local walk for their unit of history focusing on the changes to Roecroft Lower School. The children had been learning about where Roecroft used to be based and visited the old school site to look at the similarities and differences to our new building.
Year 2 also had their first school trip via coach! The children visited Knebworth House and had an exciting day out to investigate 'how plants grow' . The children compared tree types, learnt about what plants need to grow, identified different types of herbs and visited the kitchen garden to learn about plant life cycles with a member of the Knebworth team. In the afternoon, the children enjoyed a picnic in the beautiful grounds of Knebworth House and spent some time in the playground.
The summer term has also been very memorable due to the Jubilee celebrations. Key Stage 1 explored the significant events of the Queen's life and also her Coronation. They also enjoyed creating pieces of artwork to contribute to a collaborative school display in our front window. A highlight of the celebrations was our picnic lunch on our field. Wishing you all a happy and healthy July, with plenty of sunshine, Mrs Cross
