From the Editor Welcome to our June issue!

We’ve had a makeover! With plenty of time on our hands during lock down, we decided to use it to give your monthly magazine a bit of a facelift! It feels much fresher, with a new front cover and a new look layout on the inside pages. Hopefully you will like the small tweaks we have made.

JUNE 2020

This month we have combined both our Stotfold & Arlesey issues as once again, we are publishing this edition online. We have every intention of delivering our next issue through your doors and so our usual format will be resumed as of July.

We have been inundated with beautiful photographs of both Stotfold & Arlesey during the last few weeks as many readers are enjoying discovering new surroundings and walks they never even knew existed. Please do keep sending these in, as we will always find a use for them in future editions. Thank you to the very talented Matt Gifford for the front cover shot we chose to use for this month we’re sure you will agree it is a wonderful picture.

We welcome a new monthly recipe feature this month written by local chef Trace Buggins, wehope you enjoy trying out his monthly treats. We hope you enjoy our June edition - keep safe & keep well! Joanne

Remembering the fallen on VE Day With lock down measures in place, a small ceremony to mark the 75th Anniversary of VE Day took place at Stotfold Cemetery on Sunday May 8th. A representative from the Arlesey & Stotfold branch of the British Legion raised the standard accompanied by sounds of the last post from a portable speaker. A few words were spoken by John Saunders and a wreath laid in memory of those lost in battle. To accompany the small service, the Saunders steam organ played to the empty cemetery creating a poignant atmosphere almost perfect for the occasion. The Saunders steam engine and organ then lead a small procession into the centre of Stotfold where they entertained shoppers on their daily exercise. ‘It was fantastic to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day even though we are faced with strict social distancing rules at present.’ John Saunders told the Stotfold & Arlesey News Magazine. ‘I hope that we managed to bring some joy to people out and about today whilst marking this most important day.’

Andrew Fievez raises the standard in remebrance of those lost in battle. John Saunders pictured with Andrew beside the Stotfold memorial at Stotfold cemetery.

Ella rides 100km for NHS

Heroes

Inspired by the recent fundraising by Colonel Tom Moore, Stotfold youngster Ella Powell got on her bike to raise money for the NHS Charities Together. Roecroft Lower School pupil Ella, raised an amazing £1211.25 including gift aid for this fantastic cause.. With fairly modest expectations, Ella’s initial target was set at just £100!

Ella Powell gets on her bike to travel throughout the area in aid of our NHS heroes.

Pictured below on her daily route.

Over ten days, Ella rode her bike through really hot weather, horrible rain and really strong winds completing just over 100km in total. Her determination really shone through when she injured her ankle part of the way through the challenge.

‘We tried to do different routes most days. Ella's favourite was up to Fairfield Park, then through to Arlesey, past the station then back into Stotfold. We also went out on the Greenway, which was fab.’ Ella’s mum Jen told the magazine.

Ella is planning to use this experience to do her Brownie Charity badge. Ella’s fundraising link can be found at: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ellasfundraiser

Emma bakes for Captain Tom Moore For Stotfold’s Emma Azzopardi, being commissioned to bake a birthday cake for Captian Tom Moore has to be up there with the best experience of lock down to date. Captain Tom, celebrated his 100th birthday back at the end of April with huge celebrations including a RAF flypast.

‘Captain Tom has been an absolute hero with what he has achieved, and it’s such a milestone birthday.’ ‘ We wanted to give something to him as a surprise and to enjoy. BBC Breakfast commissioned the cake to be presented on TV around 9am on his birthday.’- ‘I had free rein, so drafted a sketch and worked tirelessly making all the decorations around his loves and life. It took five days to make.’ Emma commented.

Captain Tom, promoted to Colonel on his centenary last month, raised £39 million for the NHS by walking around the grounds of his home. The nation took him to their hearts and supported his birthday by sending thousands of cards to mark his special day.

Captain Tom Moore’s birthday cake pictured by Darren Miles.

Now Colonel Tom Moore – who has already been promoted from Captain is to be recognised further with a knighthood. Emma was able to meet the family of Captain Tom and enjoyed the RAF flypast from the yard of his home on the big day!

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

I am writing to praise one of your advertisers, Darren Peters Property Maintenance, for the amazing work that has recently been completed in our Stotfold home. We have had it decorated inside and out including bathrooms and kitchen as well as a few repairs and plastering . We couldn't have wished for a better and more professional job. Darren was a joy and utterly trustworthy. We are absolutely delighted with the final result and I would strongly recommend Darren to anyone locally who is wanting decorating or repairs carried out to their property. Yours faithfully, Tim Boughen

Dear Editor,

I wanted to write a letter to express my sincere thanks to the very kind neighbours and friends I am lucky to have.

As I am classed as ‘at risk’ I have been unable to visit the local shops for necessary items and weekly shopping. The support I have received from my neighbours and friends has been fantastic as my family live quite far away. I have always loved living in this area (over twenty years) but have really come to truly appreciate how fortunate we are to live among such supportive and friendly people during these last few weeks. Once again, my heartfelt thanks go to all that have helped me. Inc sandwiches, Mrs J Brown.

Afternoon Tea £12.50pp

Dear Editor,

I left Stotfold many years ago but recently explored, on the internet, Stotfold Parish Church, and found a reference to the May 2019 Stotfold News Magazine. To my surprise there was a photograph, submitted by Edward Hyde, of St Mary’s church choir. Mr Hyde asked if anybody could name members of the choir.

scone with clotted cream & jam, two homemade cakes, macaron and tea or coffee.

The head choir boy, centre front row, is that of my brother, Kenneth Rogers. On Ken’s left is myself, Roy Rogers. Some faces are familiar and I believe that one of them is Herby? Woods who sat behind me in the choir and banged my head with a Bible for flicking, with an elastic band, a paper pellet across to the choir boys opposite. The vicar told Mr Woods off but whether this was for misuse of the Bible or for banging me on the head I am not sure.

I would dearly love to have a copy of the choir as shown in Stotfold news May 2019, and would be very grateful if it was possible for a copy to be emailed to me. I have a photograph of the Church choir, taken in September 1948, which, if my memory serves me correctly, was taken at the time that the Rev Grain? left the parish and the Rev Phillips took his place.

Congratulations on such a splendid free magazine, I will now look forward to seeing further editions, albeit on the internet.

Jacob’s marathon effort for the

Need Project

Eleven year old Jacob Backhouse has been keeping busy during lockdown by using his go kart to complete a marathon in and around Stotfold. So far, Jacob’s daily exercise has raised a fantastic amount of money for the Need Project.

‘I’m going to do two miles around Stotfold every day until I’ve done 26.2 miles’ Jacob commented, ‘The go kart is quite hard to ride and I also have a broken finger at the moment, but I’m still taking up the challenge and not giving up.’

‘The Need Project started in my church and I’ve been helping quite a bit by sorting out the food, helping my Mum collect food from a nearby supermarket and making up food parcels at Christmas so I know how much hard work is involved.’

Jacob Backhouse riding his go kart and raising funds for the NEED Project.

At the time of us collating the magazine. Jacob had raised over £2200.00 smashing his initial target of £800. The NEED project are getting busier and busier during these difficult times with more people sadly falling into the poverty trap. With the help of donations from the public and from fundraisers like NORTH HERTS ROAD RUNNERS Jacob, they are able to continue the magnificent work they do. All our events and training have been cancelled for the near future. We hope to continue with the Standalone 10k in October. Stotfold couple launch local wine cellar The British Wine Cellar launches with 40 wines from across England and Wales. The wine shop offers consumers real breadth of choice, with quick and easy delivery. The British Wine Cellar stocks 40 wines, from 10 different wineries across England & Wales, and those numbers are set to grow. Buyers can discover more about English and Welsh wines and the people who made them with individual information cards included in each delivery. There’s the options to choose your own selection, or if you’re too spoilt for choice, there are some pre-mixed cases. You can buy as many bottles as you like, with no minimum order value so you’re free to buy what suits you.

Natasha & Gary toast their new venture

There are no extortionate delivery costs. Standard delivery is just £5.99, or it’s free if you order 12 bottles or more or live in Stotfold (quoting reference FREELOCALDEL at checkout). The business has been set up by two Stotfold British wine enthusiasts, Natasha Ingle and Gary Caller, who both have a wealth of experience from food and drink brands, including the likes of Hotel Chocolat, Harvey Nichols, notonthehighstreet.com and The Co-Op.

Natasha said: “We loved buying wine from England and Wales, visiting local vineyards and trying their wines. However, we found that if you wanted to try a selection of wines from a range of wineries it was difficult to do, without buying a case from them without knowing if you liked it yet. “We’re thrilled to have 40 different wines to choose from today, which can be ordered online and delivered straight to your door.” Gary added: “ By coming to us, consumers can get just one bottle or more, meaning they don’t have to feel they have to fill a case if there’s a wine they really want to try, or if there’s 12 different bottles from across the country, they can do that too!”

Etonbury Academy

Month two of lockdown and Etonbury Academy has remained open throughout for our key workers and vulnerable children. We don't underestimate how difficult this is for many families trying to juggle work, household chores and everyone trying to access technology all at the same time! Faced with so many different challenges, our students have never stopped amazing us with their work and commitment to learning, but also displaying a great sense of fun as they go.

As well as the every day school work, we have received some fantastic entries to the ETA Big Challenge competition each week. These challenges have ranged from making an architectural model, decorating a toilet roll and a picture representing peace to celebrate VE Day. Students have also been getting their families involved in their lessons, with some excellent videos sent in to our teachers. Miss Hilton, our PE Teacher created a 'Stay Active Booklet' which generated over 1000 likes on Twitter! There's something in there for all ages, so take a look and tweet us a picture. and

News from

Pix Brook Academy

It has been a while since I have thought about Pix Brook Academy un-coloured by concerns about COVID-19. The impact of this pandemic is well rehearsed and I plan instead to talk about other developments at the school and consider some of the positive unintended consequences to our current situation.

It is easy to forget that many elements of school life have continued throughout this crisis. I am delighted to welcome two new faces to PBA, one in The new build continues to take shape along Arlesey Road. the form of Mr Brooks who joined us after Easter as Head of Humanities. Undoubtedly this is a really odd way to start a new job but I know he is looking forward to meeting the pupils face to face as soon as he can. The other is a new member of the human race in the form of Miss Broadbent’s new baby, Ethan. What a strange world he has joined! Both in their own way highlight the nature of life in so far as it continues around us regardless of our own worries or circumstances.

Parents will have also received their allocation of school place. For those of us working at PBA, this was a genuinely exciting moment when we were able to see the names of the pupils who will be joining the school in September. Work has already started to get to know these pupils via their lower school and it is great to have such supportive colleagues in those schools to help us to prepare. It isn’t quite the same as normal at the moment but then nothing is! We will work our way through this process and I know that we will be prepared when school starts.

Many of you will have seen the continued progress on the new school. Willmott Dixon have continued to work throughout this period and the school itself already looks impressive. The scale of this project is truly mind boggling and can only really be appreciated up close. There is a huge amount to do but every day brings the school closer to life.

As I write the future remains unclear, it looks like some primary pupils will be returning to school, although on what basis we still don’t know. Many workers continue to be furloughed and uncertainty is the pervading sense. For those of us who have spent our careers working with young people, this period has been positively strange. Quite simply schools empty of pupils are really sad places and the usually hectic days are so different. As I reflect on a world currently dominated by online meetings, emails and telephone conversations, I realise that for human beings the need to interact personally is not just better but necessary. As a teacher I am used to fielding hundreds of questions every day, commenting, talking and just seeing the complex interactions of young people is positively life affirming. If there is an upside to this whole period it is an appreciation of what we had and took for granted. Let’s hope we can all remember this lesson when we finally come out the other side.

News from

Stotfold Watermill

Regrettably we had to cancel the Steam Fair and Country Show, as well as Live at The Mill, scheduled for the second weekend in May. Coinciding with the planned VE Day celebrations it was to have been a full weekend of visitor attractions and with the glorious sunshine, at least on the Friday and Saturday, we might have expected a record crowd. Sadly, it was not to be and as our major fundraising event of the year we will now fall below our target of ÂŁ30+k needed to maintain the mill. As small compensation, many of you will have seen the pictures of the event from previous years on our facebook page.

Fortunately, we have some cash reserves to keep us running and we can hope that our October event is able to go ahead. The events team are already busily planning the Working Steam Weekend with the aim to make it the best yet. The heritage wheat crop has already been planted and is growing well so it should be ready for harvesting and threshing using traditional binding and threshing methods in the autumn. Providing the downturn in Covid-19 infections continues, we hope to be able to announce by August that the event will go ahead on 10th/11th October with some exciting attractions. Many national steam events have already been cancelled for this year so if we can go ahead it could well attract large numbers of steam enthusiasts. Keep a watch for announcements on our website www.stotfoldmill.com., where you will also find updated news on our planned art events and children’s activities during August if these are able to go ahead.

The mill remains closed to the public for the time being but our volunteers are anxious to welcome visitors on a Sunday afternoon just as many of you are keen to see the recent additions to the exhibits and to be able to enjoy a cream tea again. Hopefully Sundays will soon return to being a weekly attraction. Meanwhile the wheels of the mill have continued to turn, as in other small mills throughout the country, producing our fine ground flour whilst none was available in the supermarkets. Our miller, Ray Kilby, has already used 6 tons of grain; 50% more than he normally mills in s full season. Well done indeed Ray you are a stalwart in our community and deserving of our sincere gratitude. Stotfold Watermill flour is available from Beales Butchers and Adore Nature in Stotfold and Bamboo Turtle in Letchworth. Please check their websites for ordering and delivery.

Golden Years by Pam Dilley We recently celebrated our Golden Wedding Anniversary. A milestone I never even dreamt of when we became engaged. Obviously, the current Coronavirus risks put paid to any thought of holding a party or second honeymoon but we hope to try again later in the year. The Anniversary just made me think how much has changed over the years.

We were officially engaged on my nineteenth birthday. Although we were anxious to start our new life together, circumstances dictated we had to wait almost two years before the wedding took place. My wedding dress was bought in Oxford Street and sold to me by an Irish lady called Bridie which caused myself and my bridesmaid/future sister in law to have the giggles. To my Mother's consternation, I always maintained I would not wear a veil. Fortunately, fashion came to my rescue and my chosen wedding dress came complete with a detachable hood. Was I an early hoodie fan? The dress cost a modest £25 which compared to modern day brides must seem ridiculous. My friend who married at a similar time had a dress that cost over £60 which I thought rather frivolous!

We married in a small church with the usual guest list of friends and family. I was very nervous, something made worse by my Father asking me if I really wanted to go through with the wedding just as we were walking up the church path! It is always said that people cry at weddings but I don't think this is supposed to apply to the Bride. I was so tense that tears rolled down my face during the vows. Something my husband has never forgotten or possibly forgiven.

We spent our honeymoon touring the Lake District – it rained! But we did spot a wonderful Manor House Hotel and promised ourselves we would stay there one day, which was indeed the plan for this year. We actually drove up took a photo of our car parked outside the Hotel and Mr & Mrs Dilley scurried away like naughty children. As I had never been to Scotland, we also popped over the border to Gretna Green – too late – we had already married by then.

The thing that really made me sit and think about changes was the article in the local paper about our wedding. It mentioned that we had met via a club, described my dress, flowers and going away outfit, honeymoon plans and named all the wedding party including some full addresses. Obviously GDPR and the idea of identity theft was way off in the future. Yours truly PAM DILLEY

We look forward to seeing you for a drink in our garden very soon....

Central Beds Local

Plan – Where Are We?

It has been a while since the Central Beds Local Plan was “examined” by the national Planning Inspectorate last Summer, so I thought it was worth reviewing the current position (based on published correspondence). Last year’s “examination” concluded with the Inspectors raising several significant concerns, which meant they were unable to approve the submitted Local Plan. CBC agreed to go away and carry out more work to address those issues, which they were aiming to complete and submit to the Inspectors by April 30th. This date slipped, but the additional documents have now been provided. The areas being looked at are:

- Update to the Sustainability Appraisal (relevant to the Arlesey site selection) - Housing and Employment Technical Papers - Transport Technical Paper (which should include results from the A507 Corridor Study). Virtual PA & Office Services

Need urgent admin support and help with your business but don’t want to hire full-time staff?

Reliable and experienced professional available for immediate start.

Extensive range of services offered to support your business from general admin to social media management and sales and marketing.

Call Deb:07766 632316 Stotfold based.

It is hoped that these documents will be available to view from late May on the Central Beds web site under “Planning - Local Plan - Examination”, so keep checking for any information and latest news.

The Inspectors will be discussing what form of consultation/review should now take place. They will culminate with a formal review (maybe around September) to decide if their concerns have been adequately addressed, and the Local Plan approved or not.

St Mary’s Church

Parish of Stotfold & Fairfield

Doing Church Differently

Although our beautiful medieval church building is temporarily closed, the life and love of St Mary’s Church continues through online worship, a weekly newsletter and serving others through phone calls to the lonely and by helping with shopping through the Churches Together Covid 19 Support Group.

We continue to worship together but separately through online services on Sundays and Wednesdays, links to which can be found on the homepage of our website https://www.stotfoldchurch.org.uk/. Our Thursday morning Baby and Toddler Group is now meeting virtually on Thursday mornings at 10.30am and our Tea Time Praise Service for young children and toddlers is held virtually on the first Sunday of the month at 4.00pm. Both groups meet on Facebook at “St Mary’s Babies and Toddlers” These difficult times are hard for everyone and the need for prayer is greater than ever. If you would like to request a prayer to be offered daily at the Daily Morning Prayer service please send you prayer requests to the vicar at revd.bill.britt@gmail.com or phone him on 01462 730 218.

Each week we email our Weekly Messenger newsletter, which includes poems, articles on how to survive and thrive in a lockdown and a series on how to have a spiritual retreat at home. If you would like to sign up to receive the Weekly Messenger and notifications of our service simply email stotfoldparishchurch@gmail.com.

Finally, both the vicar, Revd. Bill Britt and the curate, Revd. Graham Clark, are available to lead a funeral for anyone who has lived in Stotfold or Fairfield.

Under the current guidelines Church of England ministers can hold a small funeral at the graveside or at a crematorium. Some families may wish to follow the funeral at a later date with a Memorial Service in St Mary’s Church for family and friends who were unable to attend the funeral, once churches are allowed to reopen for such services.

Arlesey & Stotfold Methodist Church

Working together on what’s important?

It's so difficult to plan for the future at the moment, but we have to try to work out what the most important things are. Like most UK Churches, Methodist Church buildings have to remain closed at present but plans for reopening will be needed. Although many people are currently joining online church services or BBC Sunday morning services, and finding great benefit from doing so, the current closures exclude others from the friends and supporters they relied upon. We're keeping in contact by phone, and trying to help out as much as we can, but don't know if it’s enough.

However, we're not alone. As I wrote last month, it's so good that different volunteering organisations and different church groups have worked together for their neighbours in need.

I was also heartened by the release of the “UK Blessing” video last month (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUtll3mNj5U) . Their YouTube page says “over 65 churches and movements, representing hundreds of others, have come together online to sing a blessing over our land....buildings may be closed but the church is very much alive!” The video shows that churches can overcome differences and obstacles and work together to create something beautiful. Many people believe that the crisis, as awful as it is for so many, has the potential to change attitudes for the better, because it's helping people see what is important, and what's less important. think my aim for our churches is that we keep on working together with all our community partners to identify what’s important, and hold on to those things as our uncertain future emerges. Stotfold Football Club

As we move into another month of uncertainty with at least some easing of lockdown, hopes of grassroots football returning anytime soon looks unlikely.

Having attended virtual meetings and after receiving correspondence from the FA, it seems we could be well into the autumn at the earliest with January 2021 mooted as the likely start for competitive football. No weekly testing and behind closed doors football for us it seems.

The new ground at Arlesey Road

Government guidelines suggests limited opening of bars and restaurants in July and this is certainly feasible at the ‘Clubhouse’ with an expansive area in and outside of the building available to us which could facilitate distancing rules and other safety requirements in place at the time. Priority must always be to keep safe, but we also need to be ready to start whenever we are able to do so.

There is much to do in readiness both on and off the pitch. Although a new facility, there has been significant groundwork on the pitch with the installation of an Irrigation System.

Those who exercise alongside Arlesey Road will have noticed two large tanks being installed both holding 22,000 litres of water to help keep the pitch in pristine condition. Although relatively new, the pitch required a herbicide treatment followed by verti-draining, 30 tonnes of Top Soil, Over-seeding, fertilization and copious amounts of water. In difficult times hopefully not from the sky, as we need the sun to shine in this stay at home summer.

With the merger of Juniors and Senior clubs we are the largest community group reaching out to everyone who loves their football and YOU can be part of it. We are looking for volunteers to join us. These include an Accountant, Commercial Manager, Media Officer, Webmaster, Matchday Stewards and help in the kitchen. If you think you can help contact Phil Pateman on 07825 133344 or email info@stotfoldfc.co.uk.

Arlesey Rail Users Group

The Rail User Group (RUG) has been working hard with GTR to communicate the needs of those still travelling from Arlesey during lockdown. We've been feeding back to GTR the needs of key shift workers and to help identify alternative transport at key times where required. The RUG has written to MP Richard Fuller requesting consideration of a rail season ticket extension scheme for customers that are temporarily not travelling and have valid season tickets. We have also sought guidance from GTR on this issue and the idea is currently being considered by DfT.

Revised Timetable: The revised timetable is essentially operating a Sunday service but with some earlier and later trains. Check the Thameslink website for specific detail. This means only one train an hour for Arlesey. The RUG's position is this is not good enough for keyworkers who've been on a 12 hour shift in London - the last thing you need is to wait up to an hour for a train home or first thing in the morning. However it is also not viable to expect the two hourly service to our station for such small passenger numbers.

So we recommend driving to nearby stations (Hitchin, Stevenage or even Welwyn Garden City) where the Sunday service is a minimum of 2 trains per hour. With fewer cars in the car parks you will be able to get a space. I've been liaising direct with GTR about the potential for car park ticket acceptance so no additional costs are incurred, please check the facebook page for updates on this request and see below for more details on car parks. The Government announced that alongside the revised timetable, Rail Operators in the UK would be protected from the financial impact of a significantly reduced customer base. This will protect staff and ensure that they are not worrying about job security at a time when the business needs to guarantee running essential train services for key workers. This is great, but also means every decision now has to go through the DfT making our role a little more sluggish. But if you have questions or rail needs do get in touch we will try to help. Car Parking (Arlesey side): The good news is if you can drive to Welwyn Garden City Network Rail has unilaterally introduced free parking at its directly owned car parks, (the closest of those is at Welwyn Garden City station)

Refunds: GTR have introduced enhanced arrangements to make it as easy as possible for you to change or cancel your travel plans. If you have a season ticket you have used for more than one month, you can get an estimate of the refund you will receive by using the Season Ticket Calculator on their website. Please note that this estimate may not include the refund fee or ticket discounts at the time of purchase. Tickets bought before 1 Jan 2020 at last year’s (lower) prices will also receive a refund based on this price. Thameslink - Coronavirus refunds Ticket Machines: From Monday 6th April until further notice, Arlesey Station ticket office will be closed. This is to help with efforts across the country to slow the spread of coronavirus. The number of tickets being sold at these smaller ticket offices is extremely low and passengers will still be able to use the ticket machines, Hitchin station ticket office is open as are the main London terminals if you need help. You can also book online and collect at the station machines or download. Jodie Chillery.

Lock down Recipe Chicken & Bacon Roulade with Trace Buggins

Welcome to my first contribution to your monthly Stotfold & Arlesey News Magazine. I am delighted to offer my experience and expertise to everyone cooking for themselves or their families during this lock down period. From my home town of Leicester, to Brighton, London and everywhere in between, I have enjoyed every second of working together with my second love ‘my Kitchen’. With almost 20 years’ experience as Head Chef at The Black Horse, Ireland and after winning numerous awards, I am now enjoying cooking at Mount Pleasant Golf Course in Lower Stondon.

I’ve kept all of the recipes I have made, either in nicely bound books or simple scraps of paper so not to forget the important things, including dashes of ‘this’ and sprinkling of ‘that.’ I hope you enjoy my first recipe - useful for when you have chicken, bacon and sausages needing to be used. Local chef Trace Buggins

Chicken and Bacon Roulade Serves 4

Ingredients: 8 chicken thighs skinned and boned. Pack of thin bacon or Parma ham. 4 sausages (any type) deskinned Dash of cream Chicken & bacon Roulade. Salt and pepper 1. First make a mousse by processing two chicken thighs with the sausages, a dash of cream and set aside. 2. Take a square sheet of greaseproof paper 12ins x12ins , and lay the slices of bacon /ham onto it, leaving an inch all the way round 3. Take the remaining chicken and layer on top of the bacon square. 4. Grab the mousse and spread on top of the chicken, again leaving an inch around the first chicken layer. 5. Start to roll up into a sausage using the paper as you go (the paper shouldn’t be inside the roulade.) Once you have it in a sausage shape, keep it rolled in the greaseproof and then roll in foil, twisting the ends quite firm so you have a ‘cracker’ with a jam jar sized centre. 6.Place your ‘cracker’ onto a tray in a preheated oven at 180c/160c fan gas mark 4 and cook for 45 mins . 7. Let it stand before carving into 4 portions and serve with market vegetables and buttered jersey’s Leave to cool and keep in the fridge until needed. Cut and pan fry on one side until golden and finish in the oven for 10/15 mins.

Shopping help for vulnerable in Stotfold Do you know someone who cannot get to the shops? Churches Together in Stotfold have launched the Covid-19 Support Group to help those who cannot pick up their shopping from local stores and don’t have local family, friends or neighbours to help them. Individuals who have money for groceries but are unable to shop because they are self-isolating, can call 07401 220349 or email stotfoldchurchestogether@gmail.com. Payment can be made on delivery of the shopping by either cash, cheque or online transfer to Churches Together in Stotfold.

Not everyone has local family or friends, which is why Churches Together is offering this free delivery service. All of our volunteers have been checked for criminal records using the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

After a user registers with the service, he or she can phone or email a shopping list to the contact details above and a volunteer will purchase items if they are available.

Volunteers will follow hygiene guidelines to deliver the shopping and take payment. Our volunteers will be issued with ID badges plus a password to share when organising a delivery.

The helpline will be open from 9.00am to 3.00pm, Monday to Saturday, although deliveries can be made outside those times.

Churches Together is working alongside The Need Project, which provides food for those who cannot afford it, The Good Neighbour Group, The Stotfold Town Council, and NHS Volunteer Responders, who will be delivering government food parcels to those who are “shielding”. Please urge neighbours & friends to call 07404 220349 if they require assistance.

For this special issue we thought we would use this picture from the Stotfold Scout dinner. Thank you to Stephen File for providing this image. Can you name anyone in this picture? Have you any pictures you could lend us for this feature?
