From the Editor

Welcome to June!

As we write this Editor’s note for June, it is the day after the Stotfold Mill Steam Fair and we are feeling rather worn out! For us however, it is just one weekend of hard work - for the committee members at the Stotfold Mill the work goes on.. After speaking to many members of the events team over the last two days we are astounded at the amount of hours that go in to producing an event of this scale Huge thanks to everybody involved in organising the weekend -it is a great event for Stotfold proven by the sheer volume of visitors we saw entering the gates over the last two days. If you could offer the Mill team a few hours of your time each month they would be delighted to hear from you. There is a job for everyone and the committee are in urgent need to extra pairs of hands. No experience necessary, just the willingness to get involved. If you would like to meet new people what better place to start? Please get in contact with the Mill for further details. It was lovely to chat to everyone that stopped by to say ‘hello’ to us on the Stotfold News Magazine stand - it is always nice to put faces to names and we thoroughly enjoy hearing how much people love receiving their copy of the magazine through the door each month. It takes a lot of hard work and many late nights, but listening to our readers makes it so very worthwhile. Thank you also for all of the amazing photographs we have received of the weekend - you will find a picture special on pages 10 & 11.

We have had a busy month with both our magazine and our social media - if you follow us on facebook you will have seen that some of our posts have reached over 70,000 people of late. We endeavour to offer a good balance of local news, events and advertising and are working hard to continually improve the service that we give. With this is mind, we are exploring the possibility of branching out into Arlesey and producing a magazine for residents as we do in Stotfold.

Winners Enjoy The Steam Weekend Competition winners Allen Cutts and Cara Adnett enjoyed complimentary entry into this year’s Steam Fair & Country Show after winning their entry tickets in recent competitions run in conjunction with Stotfold Mill. News from

Stotfold Watermill

Has Stotfold Mill hit international fame?

It certainly felt as if we were in the middle of United Nations meeting on our second open Sunday of the year, when we were pleased to welcome visitors from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hungary, Spain, Italy and Portugal all in the course of one afternoon! Can it be that the recent effort of our Marketing Team to promote the Mill on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram has gained notice across the globe, or is it simply the reputation of Stotfold Mill Oats has gone worldwide? Whatever the reason, we continue to attract a steady stream of visitors, with numbers reaching over 450 on the first three weekends – almost double the number for the same period last year.

On our third Sunday we welcomed some 50 members of the Spalding Classic Car Club, who had driven down to visit it us and to enjoy tea and cakes in Randall’s Tea Room. On the same day members of the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Steam Engine Preservation Societies, who had been holding a two-day apprentices training session in the field opposite, came for refreshments. Even more satisfying, our Milling Team welcomed back Archie Chenery from Kent, who in May 2015, at the age of 12, ran both our pairs of millstones at the same time. He was believed to be the youngest person in the world ever to have operated two sets of stones together. Any other young boys or girls who would like to win the chance to operate the mill can do so by entering our Count the Rats and Mice competition during a visit. Ask the guides for an entry form. Let us hope that many more visitors arrive during the summer to help us to fulfil the Trustees primary aims ‘to maintain … a working watermill …. for the benefit and education of the public’ and ‘Stotfold Nature Reserve ...for the appreciation and enjoyment of the flora and fauna’. By the time the Stotfold Magazine has been published in June, the Steam Fair and Country Show will sadly be behind us. We hope it has been a success and we enjoyed the fine weather that was promised at the time of writing. Our many thanks to all who turned out to support us, either as members of the volunteer team, participants and traders, or most importantly, as paying customers. We need in excess of £30,000 a year to maintain the mill and this event is our main source of income so it is critical to the mill’s future. Once again, we are desperately appealing for more volunteers to join us. For more information see our website, www.stotfoldmill.com/volunteer.

We now look forward to more forthcoming events. Our Summer Art Exhibition, featuring over 100 original paintings by artists from Herts and Beds, is on 28 -30th June. For those inspired to create their own works, we are holding an Acrylic Collage Workshop on 15th June and a Watercolour Workshop on 14th July. Nature Detectives, our holiday activity for 5-11year olds, is on 29th May to be followed by further events during July and August. Further details and booking forms for all these events can be found on our website. Finally, we are pleased to welcome local groups hiring the Ivel Room for their own events and activities. Unfortunately, Debbie Gribben of Your Inner Peace has had to cancel the Fermented Workshop planned for 1st June, but Joe Carter of Carter Fitness is currently holding yoga sessions on a Tuesday evening at 7.30pm, as well as early morning group fitness sessions from the mill car park at 6.00am on Tuesdays, see www.carterfitness.co.uk. Remember that Stotfold Mill is ‘run by the community for the community’, so if you have any ideas for holding events in the mill please contact us.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

Just a quick note. Returned from a month-long tour of New Zealand to discover that someone had tried to steal our smart, brand-new, expensive, slot-in fence panels! Even though our cars were still parked outside! The prospective thieves were obviously watching the house as they took advantage of a short period on the afternoon of Sunday 10th March when my next door neighbour went out. What they did not know was that the man who installed the fence had heard of this happening before, and had actually fixed the panels in in a more secure way. They even drilled large holes in the panels to give themselves a better grip when their initial attempt at lifting the panels failed. I had no idea that this sort of theft even happened, and admit to not taking much notice when it was installed. The fence has now been made even more secure and extra security measures have also been put in place. This has been quite shocking to me. What is the world coming to? Could it even have been someone who knew me and knew that I was away? In contacting the Stotfold News Magazine I just wanted to make others aware that this type of crime even takes place.

We hope that as they say ‘knowledge is key’ if you are planning on having work of this nature carried out in the near future. Name and address supplied.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

May I take a short trip down memory lane prompted by the letter from Edward Clutten in your May issue?

Now approaching eighty, Wolverhampton Wanderers have been my passion since I was seven years old. In his letter, Edward related the names of pupils from Stotfold Boys' School from a school photo circa 1950.

One of the boys, Brian Pye was - according to Edward - nicknamed "Jesse". This nickname can surely only be attributed to one of my childhood heroes Jesse Pye who was Wolves centre-forward in the late forties/early fifties. Jessie scored two goals in Wolves 3-1 F.A.Cup Final victory over Leicester City in 1949 and I find it remarkable that his "fame" would have extended to the schoolboys of what in those days must have been the very rural village/town of Stotfold.

Back to the present, I never thought I'd live to see the day Wolves would be back in the big time. What a season we've had knocking Liverpool and Man Utd out of the F.A.Cup and beating Arsenal, Spurs and - sweetest of all, taking four points off Chelsea (would have been all six but for Hazard's last minute equalizer at Stamford Bridge).....My grandsons Ciaran and Luke are both Chelsea supporters and I have walked in their soccer shadows all their lives but now I have the bragging rights..... Season ticket renewed, ready to go again.....We're Wolverhampton, we're on our way back !!! Thanks for the memory Edward, sorry if I've gone on a bit. Regards Tony Mahoney. Dear Editor,

I would be very pleased to hear from anyone local who may be occasionally travelling to the Hampshire/Surrey border returning the same day. I would be very grateful for a lift both ways paying half the fuel cost.

I have relations living in the Alton area who I would like to be able to visit. Due to a current medical problem I cannot travel by train as I used to. Getting on and off, waiting at the station and negotiating uneven ground could all be an impossible problem for me as a travelling oldie! I am in my mid 70’s and use a stick so am very slow.

If you think you may be able to help please contact me through the magazine. Thank you so much Mrs P Ray.

Proving Age Is Just A Number With The Stotfold Good Neighbour Group! The Stotfold News Magazine were invited a few weeks back to observe the Friday afternoon chair-based exercise class held at the Memorial Hall for members of the Stotfold Good Neighbour Group. We were invited to see for ourselves the wonderful impact this class has had on it’s thirty or so participants. The group, now a little over one year old is lead by four instructors Ann Talbot, Amanda Lambert and Alison & Rob Honeyman. All instructors at the group have completed the relevant training and first aid courses in order to deliver the class. With mobility scooters and walking aids parked up along the side of the room it was intriguing to find out what would go on at this exercise class with a difference!

The idea for the group began when volunteer Ann, who having worked alongside the physiotherapy services at Lister Hospital for over twenty years recognised the need for the older generations to remain agile in later years. The group concentrates on strength, flexibility and balance exercises which in turn helps contribute towards many general lifestyle activities and wellbeing. ‘Many of our members have seen a huge improvement in the time they have been coming to class’ Ann told us. ‘Some were unable to lift themselves up out of their chair unaided and can now easily do this and much, much more. Exercises are carried out at differing levels and adapted to the needs of each individual.’

The group is made up of two sessions with ages ranging from a little over 60 to the oldest participant of 92! The men and women all encouraging each other to do one more leg lift and a few more stretches. Beginners are encouraged to ease themselves gently into the class, with the more established members working up a sweat and working their way up through the scale of excercises. After the class, the group sit round and enjoy refreshments and chat, the social aspect of the group carrying equal significance to some members who have limited interaction on other days of the week. One lady having recently lost her husband and living in Fairfield, told us how the group enabled her to meet new people and keep fit and healthy at the same time.

Many members of the exercise class use other services the Stotfold Good Neighbour Group offer, Wendy Craig volunteer at the group told us more about the important part the group plays in the life of many Stotfold residents. ‘Last year we provided transport for over 500 hospital appointments, one of the more essential services we offer. We are run solely by volunteers and rely heavily on donations and grants in order to offer our services. Currently the group are fortunate to be chosen as one of their Local Causes by the Co-op Community fund - we are urging Stotfold residents to sign up and help us by donating 1% of their weekly spend to the Stotfold Good Neighbour Group. it is really simple to do and the store will assist you in finding out more.’ The group are desperately looking for more volunteers could you help? You can find out more about the group and the service they offer by calling. 07599 925587.

News from

Roecroft Lower School. Welcome to our news for June!

Half way through the year, June has flown round and I hope we are now finally enjoying some consistently warm weather. At Roecroft we are incredibly lucky to have an exceptional committee that help to organise events to raise money for the school. FORLS (Friends of Roecroft Lower School) have organised a successful school disco, a sponsored bounce and also a quiz night this term. I would like to say a huge thank you on behalf of the staff and children for all of your efforts and hard work. I hope that over the next few weeks we can welcome some of you into school to watch our contribution to Festival Week. Our dance morning, this year on Friday 14th June, is always very well received and a huge success. This year the songs will be ‘Teachers Top Tunes’. I am sure there will be a very eclectic mix!

An update from our Key stage 1 team: We are having a fun packed summer term in Key Stage 1, exploring our topic of ‘Boats and Beaches’. In History we have been investigating the seaside ‘then and now’, looking at the key differences, and have studied key events from the past such as the sinking of the Titanic and the adventures of Christopher Columbus.

Year 4’s learning First Aid this month.

In Geography, we have been learning all about our world, with Year 1 looking at the four countries that make up the United Kingdom and their capital cities, and Year 2 exploring the continents and oceans of the world! We have been enjoying using the ‘outdoor classroom’ lots this term which fits in well with our science work on plants and animal habitats. Our Values for June are Caring and Simplicity.

Thank you for sharing in our news this month, we look forward to updating you again in the July issue of the Stotfold News Magazine. Mrs Cross

Pix Brook Academy. A lot of activity this month to update you on here at Pix Brook Academy. We hosted a successful Parents Information Evening on 24th April. This gave the chance for parents & children who will be the first cohorts of the new school, to see and hear from the Principal. Those who attended were given a site visit by Modplan, to walk through the structure and get a feel for how the school will be in September. They also got a first look at the new uniform, which was revealed to be purple & grey and looks fantastic.

You may have seen that the 2019 build at Etonbury is really taking shape, with steel structure and flooring now in place, look for panelling being installed in coming weeks! Willmott Dixon has been announced by Central Beds Council as the 2020 Build contractor, the proposed plans and images for Pix Brook Academy 2020 can be found on our website: www.pixbrookacademy.co.uk

Teacher recruitment is well underway and we are excited that Pix Brook will be opening in just a few months. For more updates please visit our website & follow us on Facebook @PixBrookAcademy & Twitter @PixBrookA

News from

Etonbury Academy. The Easter break dominated April, giving our students and staff valuable time to catch up with friends and family. With the support from our dedicated staff we were able to hold some revision and coursework sessions for our Year 11s. It is also an opportunity to paint, clean and do the maintenance jobs that cannot be done during the term time.

This term year 5 are studying ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ for their ‘Out of this world’ topic, exploring what life would be like if they were trapped on a desert island. Year 6 have been working really hard in lessons which will support their SATs in May. Particular congratulations to the year 6 football team who came second in the league cup final. Our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh students have been practicing for their first expedition, and endured a mix of weather during their walk and camping overnight in Ivinghoe. Our talented students continue to shine, with over ten students taking piano exams this month and moving on to their next grade. Also, over twenty of our younger mathematicians are eagerly awaiting their results of the Junior Maths Challenge, so we will hopefully have more news on this for you next month. As a school with small year groups compared to the larger schools, so many of our staff get to know all our students very well. Next month we will see the our first ever GCSE students leave, and we will be wishing them a fond farewell which will no doubt bring many tears. Our value of the month is determination, and with this in mind over the next few weeks, both our year 11s and year 6s will enter their examinations and tests knowing they have done their best.

We are working on our communications through social media, so please follow us on Twitter and Facebook. If any of you have recently moved in to the area, this is a great way of finding out about our staff vacancies and school developments. We look forward to updating you on our news in the next issue of the Stotfold News Magazine.

News from

St Mary’s CE Academy Summer activities are now well underway, our very popular Cricket Club has been running for a number of weeks now and our Athletics Club is due to start imminently. May proved to be a busy month for us with the Year 3 visit to Hazard Alley, the KS2 production of The Jungle Book and trip to see Tom Gates Live at Milton Keynes Theatre as well as a Year 3 ‘Romans’ workshop.. all very well received and enjoyable educational events! We are taking part in a number of other activities during June including a Year 4 Football Festival, the Year 2 visit to Hendon RAF Museum and African Drumming lessons in KS2 to name but a few. Our School Summer Concerts also take place during Festival Week. Our meetings for parents of children due to start school with us in September are also being held in June. This is where parents find out more information about their child starting school and how they can help them in their first weeks etc. The children are then invited to visit the school in the first weeks of July.

Stotfold Festival Week Friday 14th June – Sunday 23rd June

Before we know it, Festival Week will be upon us. We are taking part in a lot of the community activities and we will also be hosting a SMASH Club Open Afternoon. Please look out for further information in the Festival Events Flyer which should be delivered by the first week of June within the Stotfold News Magazine. As you are hopefully aware, we are organising the Festival Fete on Saturday, 22nd June. We have decided this year to forward proceeds from both our concerts and the Fete to The Need Project and The Good Neighbour Group via the Town Council and also the SMSA IT Fund, all very worthwhile causes and we would like to take this opportunity of thanking everyone in advance for their continued support.

If you would like more information on the Festival Fete, or to book a stall, please contact the school office on 01462 730343.

Good Progress For New football Stadium Readers of the Stotfold News Magazine will have recall in the March edition that work has now begun on bringing the new FA-standard pitch and facilities to Stotfold. The latest update from housing association settle, who are developing the new facilities with Stotfold Football Club and Stotfold Town Council, shows that the development is progressing well. Stotfold residents will see that the new stadium is taking shape - in particular, the pitch floodlights are in place and the foundations have gone in for the new clubhouse.

The image above shows an artist's impression of the new development, with the project on track to be completed in October this year.

We look forward to updating readers of the Stotfold News Magazine at key stages of the development.

News from

Central Bedfordshire Academy. Mr Emmins and all of the animals at the ACB Farm would like to thank our local neighbours for their continued support. In particular, Steve King who kindly donated a new pond liner so we could replace the old one and make improvements to our pond area and Alan Holloway who has provided us with several plants that will be used in that area too. Secondly we are pleased to announce that we have had another new arrival on the farm. Our female goat Lola successfully delivered a new kid whose name will be decided at the Stotfold Mill Fair.

Members of the public will have an opportunity to name the new goat and suitable names will be drawn from a hat to determine the winner. So far it has been a successful year for our small farm and it couldn't have been done without the ongoing support we receive from our local community.

Year 10 are about to begin their work experience placements in the community and we are grateful to all employers who are supporting our students on their first steps into the world of work. Our Year 11 students are working hard towards their GCSE which are currently taking place and we wish them the very best in their efforts.

We look forward to updating you all on more news from the Academy in next month’s July issue of the Stotfold News Magazine.(and revealing the name of our baby goat!)

News from Stotfold Football Club Sadly, the First team finished second from bottom of the league on goal difference so expect to be playing in Spartan South Midlands League Division 1 next season. With the move to the new stadium anticipated to be in the first few months of next season, let’s hope the club can start the re-build to try and get back into the Premier Division. The Development team finished the season mid-table and were runners up in their League Challenge Trophy.

The Eastern Junior Alliance teams all did well in what is a very good standard league. Congratulations to the U16 team on winning the League and County cup and being runners-up in the League Challenge Cup, to the U15 team on winning the League Challenge Cup and Mid-week Cup and the U14 team on being runners-up in the County Cup.

The Re-Union match on 4 May to mark the forthcoming closure of Roker Park was very well attended and is expected to raise a good total for our chosen charity Keech Hospice Care. As you may have noticed, work on our new stadium continues at a good pace. Why not join us in this exciting new venture be that an opportunity for your business, or to join our hard-working committee to help us take this new project forward. For more information contact (info@stotfoldfc.co.uk). News from Stotfold Junior Football Club Keith Betts’ U14 Ambers have won their league with a fantastic record of P22 W18 L1 D3 – Well done Keith and the Ambers “Champions”

Matt Bennett and Ian Corner’s U14 Whites were runners up in the County cup final, well done all. We are in need of managers, coaches and helpers in our club. If you are interested in helping in any way email chairman@stotfoldjuniorfc.co.uk The club will pay for the DBS security check and FA level 1 courses.

Just a reminder the SJFC tournament is on at Roker Park on the weekend of 5th, 6th and 7th July, please come and support the club.

At Easter we took part in our annual meet with the Dutch club EBOH. The Juniors took a Under 14, Under 16 and a Ladies team to Dordrecht to celebrate the 45th year of great friendship between the two clubs. On the Saturday the Dutch did not disappoint, they arranged foot golf and ice skating for our teams and for the Ladies a tour of the Dordrecht followed by shopping. On Easter Sunday the U14’s started the day of matches. An excellent performance in blistering heat saw them come away with a 0-5 win and the U14 Waylett Shield. This win also handed the U16’s a good lead for the Stuart Alway Trophy. Next up was the Adult game. No trophy for this game just bragging rights, which saw the Junior Adults win on penalties after a 4-4 draw. The Stotold Junior Ladies played next and in a thrilling game saw them storm to a 1-5 win to retain the Friendship Trophy and shield. The last game of the day was the U16 match. The competitive close match ended with EBOH leading 2-1 meaning the U16 Waylett Shield went to the Dutch, but the Stuart Alway Trophy remained with Stotfold Juniors for the fourth year running. (The trophy is awarded by the total from the full-time scores of the U14 and U16 games).

An amazing day of football from all that took part. An excellent weekend where old friends were reunited and new friendships made. We look forward to 2020 where we hope to host the annual event in our new home at Arlesey Road. To contact the Stotfold News Magazine please call 01462 731986

First Anniversary For Box Of Cakes Cake & Coffee Shop.

Box of Cakes Cafe and Coffee Shop are celebrating their first succesful year of serving cake and coffee in Hallworth Drive, Stotfold. The cafe has received amazing feedback and support since opening their doors, “It’s just what Stotfold needs” is a regular statement and over the last year, they have listened to customers and further introduced a child’s room, outdoor seating, some vegan and gluten free items, a monthly late night cafe, baby and toddler snacks and breakfast items. The cafe even held children’s cupcake decorating classes in the school holidays, with more to follow.

The cafe were delighted to sponsor the Roecroft Bake Off last year and held a late night Halloween evening for the children to enjoy. Fairfield Players Perform Radio Play On Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd June, Fairfield Players will be performing a radio play, where the actors remain static as the story unfolds, in the style of a BBC radio recording, and the sound effects are visual. The main action is a play by Martin Ward, entitled “Corner’s Last Case”, a ripping yarn in which Inspector Corner has to contend with a murder, his boss and the Russian Mafia! This will be preceded by “Eviction”, written by Penny Mitchell, which introduces us to the sort of unsavoury characters InspectorcCorner deals with on a daily basis. During the interval, a fish and chip supper and other refreshments will be served.

The performance will take place at the Memorial Hall, Hallworth Drive, Stotfold, SG5 4HR and starts at 7.45pm. Bring your own alcohol. Entry is by ticket only.

Tickets cost £10 and can be obtained by contacting the box office on 01462 624369 Or email: pennyann.mitchell@ntlworld.com.
