News from Roecroft Lower School

With only two months of the academic year remaining, it is hard to keep up with how quickly time has flown this year. Especially so in school, mainly due to the reintroduction of many of our missed extracurricular activities. At the end of April, our Year 4 children went on their first residential school trip to Cuffley Camp. This was an amazing experience for them and the first time many of the children had slept away from home! During the day, they took part in a range of adventurous activities such as rock climbing, night line and orienteering and learnt bushcraft skills including how to light and build a fire. The children had a fantastic time sleeping in cosy woodland pods, exploring the acres of woodland, bonding with their friends outside of the classroom and singing around the campfire. We were so proud of the achievements our children made in their time away and how beautifully they lived all their Roecroft values too.

Other year groups have enjoyed local visits to the Library, The Mill, and the Airbus Foundation in Stevenage. We are trying to ensure we use local facilities for our trips and visits, not only to financially support these excellent local resources, but also to teach the children about the things they can experience on their doorsteps. In June, our Year 2 children will be visiting Knebworth House, another incredible day out nearby.

This term we have an update from our EYFS team:

In Reception, our topic this term is 'Once Upon a Time...

' and we will be spending the term reading and finding out about lots of different books and stories. We have already read ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ , written a set of instructions and planted our own beans. We are now looking after them and observing the changes as they grow. We then looked at ‘Handa's Surprise’ which is about a little girl who lives in a village in Kenya who wants to surprise her friends with some delicious fruit. We loved writing letters to our friends when we read ‘The Jolly Postman’ story and enjoyed walking to the post box to post them and waiting for them to be delivered. We also loved the story ‘There's a Superhero in Your Book’ and looking at old and new superheroes, as well as ‘The Gingerbread Man. ’

At the end of the half term, we had our exciting visit to Stotfold Library. Over the remainder of this term, we will be continuing to look at lots of different books and stories as well as getting ready for ourtransition into Year 1.
