From the Editor Welcome to March.

We are pleased to bring you a great selection of news this month, including a new monthly contribution from Pix Brook Academy. The developments for the Academy are now well underway and we look forward to updating you on how things are progressing. We welcome the Academy to the magazine and look forward to hearing all about their news as time goes on. We also look forward to bringing you regular updates on the development of Stotfold Football Club and the new ground. You’ll find an introduction to this on page 33 of this month’s issue. This month we say a fond farewell to three of our delivery volunteers Vanessa, Madeleine & Linda and thank them for their help over the years. We are so fortunate to welcome two new delivery helpers, Claire & Jude to help cover these rounds Welcome to the team!

We’d like to give special mention to Stotfold Good Neighbour Group this month as they become one of the chosen local causes for the Co-op Community Fund. You’ll find details on page 5 of how you can nominate the group to benefit every time you spend your money in the local store. This is such a fantastic cause who rely soley on donations to deliver the wonderful service that they do. Please take a look and help them if you can.

On a slightly more personal note, lots of readers may be aware that sadly we lost our Dad, Roy, at the beginning of February. Dad was born in Stotfold, went to school in Stotfold and more recently ran his business from here for many years. Back in 2015, it was Dad that convinced us that taking over this wonderful magazine would be a good idea, as he had enjoyed such great success running his business from his small advert in the publication each month. We knew then that the magazine truly worked. The rest they say is history.

Many people will have met our Dad as he was always helping drop magazines off to our delivery volunteers and together with my mum helped at every event we have ever attended, including the Stotfold Mill. He was extremely proud of the magazine and enjoyed nothing more than chatting to people about his memories of Stotfold from days gone by. He was a huge part of our lives and of our Stotfold News team and he will be very sadly missed by us all. Our thanks to everyone that has offered us their condolences We will continue to develop the magazine and deliver our very best efforts to you each month in his memory.

Thank you.

Stotfold adventurer Tom Young completes 800 mile solo trek across the Arctic wildernessof Lapland

Bedfordshire adventurer and filmmaker Tom Young completed his 800 mile hike south through Lapland after 66 days, crossing the length of the European Arctic circle. Averaging 12 miles a day and hitting 62,500 steps on his biggest day, Tom scaled glacial mountains, wild camped 49 times, used rocks for shelter on the arctic tundra, and hammocked in wild forests under the northern lights. On top of this, Tom battled heat exhaustion in 24 hour 34℃ daylight to freezing nights of -10℃ and snow.

Tom Started his expedition on July 26th at the most northern point of Tom pictured camping out during his adventure mainland Europe, a barren Norwegian headland jutting out into the Barents Sea. During the summer, temperatures in the Arctic tundra reached 34℃, and whilst carrying a 27kg rucksack, Tom had to drink 9 litres of water a day to battle the heat exhaustion.

Tom crossed areas of wilderness that are largely still intact with functioning ecosystems home to large carnivores like bears, wolves and lynx, as well as beaver and boar; all known for their ability to engineer their wild habitats. His highlights included Reisa National Park in Norway and Sarek National Park in Sweden.“Camping wild, foraging for fruit and fungi, and being exposed to the elements with the simple goal to travel on foot through untamed wilderness provided me with first hand experience of the types of habitat that have been destroyed from the British landscape.” However, it wasn’t all plain sailing for Tom. Hiking up to 24 miles in a day, ascending the equivalent of two Mount Everests, physical and mental exhaustion was inevitable and on occasions it was the kindness of strangers that came to his rescue. One evening, Tom had set up an idyllic camp spot, when at 1am he was hit by a ferocious icy windstorm. With only one hour of rough sleep, Tom struggled to walk on, eventually bumping into three Norwegians staying in a remote mountain hut.“Upon hearing of my escapades they immediately cooked me a hot Norwegian potato stew, boiled up a litre of coffee and insisted I ate the last of their chocolate supplies. People are amazing. Kindness really is king.” Tom finished his hike in Hemavan,Sweden. He is now planning to visit schools to talk about adventure, wildlife and rewilding whilst currently editing footage from his trip into an adventure documentary.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

Dear Joanne,

I have just received my latest issue of the Stotfold News Magazine. First of all can I say well done and Good Luck to the gentleman who is raising money for Hertfordshire Hospitals I hope you raise lots of money for them. I myself am also Fundraising again , this year I have two challenges going on The first of which is the BUPA Vitality 10k on May the 27th which I am doing in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust. The second event is the Royal Parks Half Marathon which I am taking on for the second year running this year I'm going to be doing this to raise money for CLIC Sargent Care for Children with Cancer or as the new name says YOUNG LIVES VS CANCER , Both are great charities and as well as raising money for them I have made it slightly more interesting by agreeing with my Coach that I try to beat my previous times , so no pressure then! If anyone would like to Donate and help me support these worthy causes they can look up my link online:

I wanted to send you a picture of the cans I picked up last week in Mill Lane over about five hours. There are 438 cans,65 plastic bottles and 20 glass bottles. I did the same thing last March and picked up another 250 cans and bottles, all along the same small stretch of lane. That’s a LOT of cans and bottles. Nearly all of them cider cans so almost certainly from one individual, come on Stotfold someone must know who this is. Name Witheld.

http://ukvirginmoneygiving.com/adrianhopkins

I will of course let everyone know how I get on after each of these challenges is complete , in the meantime you may see me running around the roads in Stotfold and Astwick. Best Regards Adrian Hopkins

Dear Joanne, On behalf of the Altzeimhers Society a huge thank you to everyone that supported our Christmas Charity Fayre. Thank you to businesses, stall holders and those that helped sell tickets for the very popular Beales Meat Raffle. Together with the raffle, % card sales, greeting card demo and donations we have raised ÂŁ217.30. Thank you all - Bridie. Dear Editor, After using the services of Jonny Garside (Doors & Locks) after finding his number inside the Stotfold News Magazine, we would like to thank him for his prompt and efficient repair to our back door. We would recommend his services to your readers. Jennifer & Eric Legate

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

Well done Margaret - your letter in February's issue raised lots of memories of Stotfold. My friend and I started to reminisce over a cup of coffee. We talked about the Chemist in Brook Street - H Stern then C Spriggs & his wife (she ran 'The Dog House'. There was a little Grocers Shop at the Cross Roads run by Mr Burr.)

Mr Bugby had a General Store at the top of Queen Street which reverted back to a house for Paul Stoten. There was Wedds (Sweet Shop) High Street. Bancroft Radio & TV in the High Street. Caress (another Grocer) was situated at The Green, there was also a barber, Geraldines (ladies hairdressers). Anna King ran the 'Flower Shop' Hitchin Road from her home. The Wool Shop (High Street) was owned by Renee Pendleton (Grandmother to Victoria Pendleton). I remember Ivy English serving in there - later this was owned by Gill Shepherd & called Cards & Crafts. The Spar Shop in Brook Street was called 'Susans'.

My father had Bandy's Newsagent built in Regent Street in 1954 (next to Charles Fish shop which later became Barclays Bank and is now a Craft Shop.

Other larger employers were RDB Freightlines Brook Street - Motorola at Taylors Road. C & F Motors and Stotfold Coachworks Church Road. Hitchin Components and Morse Chain in Fen End. H Smith & Sons (Transport) Regent Street, also the Drapery Store above the Co-op. I am sure there are still more which I have forgotten for the moment BUT I have great memories of the Cinema & especially dancing in the gangways to ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK (Bill Hailey) much to the annoyance of Maud & her staff. I am going back a long way - great memories! Jennifer Legate

News from

Stotfold Watermill

SOME PEOPLE ARE BUSY…..

While most of us have been keeping out of the mill to avoid the cold and damp, at least a few others, including the miller have been hard at work. Recently the mill has acquired another machine to join our collection. It is another crusher and grinder made by Henry Bamford and Sons, that has been generously donated by our friends at Barton Hill Farm, Lilley who grow the Skyfall wheat that we grind to produce our award winning flour. The Millar, Ray Kilby, has been busily working to restore the machine that had been standing unused for many years, gathering dirt and rust, in the corner of a barn at Mr Shaw’s farm. Ray hopes to have the machine installed and running for visitors to see before the start of our next season at the end of March. If there are any retired engineers living locally who would like to join Ray and the milling team in the restoration work at the mill, please go to our website www.stotfoldmill.com to find out about volunteering.

On the subject of volunteering, I am sure that there are many of you out in the community who would enjoy the social and friendly company of being a member of one of our volunteer groups at the mill. The teams include Randall’s Tea Room and the Kingfisher Shop staff, the Education team, Guides and Marshalls, as well as the Milling Team of course. There is also the Archives group who are working on the varied records and artefacts that we have acquired. The group responsible for Marketing and Publicity, so vital in enabling us to draw in visitors, are anxious to recruit more members. In particular, they are anxious to find a volunteer with the experience to take on the role of Marketing/Publicity Coordinator, to lead the team in some of Social Media, Advertising, Press Releases, Leaflet and Web Design etc. More information can be found on our website and also on our Facebook and Twitter pages. As a member of the local community, please remember it is your mill so any contribution of help that you can give is important and valued. Look out this month for the date of our Volunteer Information Evening, when you are very welcome to come along and find out more.

A reminder too, that the Steam Fair and Country Show is not far off on 11th /12th May. The Major Events team organising the weekend are looking for local traders who might wish to have advertising banners placed around the arena. They are also seeking any vintage or classic car owners who might bring along their vehicles to display on the site. If you are interested in either of these opportunities to help enhance the event please contact enquiries@stotfoldmill.com or leave a message on our answer phone at 01462 734541.

Advance tickets for the Country Show at a 20% DISCOUNT are still available, as are tickets for Friday night’s Live at the Mill, rock music festival, on 10th May in the beer marquee. Visit our website to purchase tickets and to find out all the details about both events.

Letters to the Editor Dear Joanne,

Just to say a BIG THANK YOU to Stotfold News for advertising the Dementia Talk given at the Salvation Army at the beginning of February. We are delighted to say that with the help of the advert in the magazine and your facebook promotion over sixty people attended this most informative talk given by Sarah Petit. Many thanks once again. Roy Scott - Organiser. Dear Editor, I have managed to place two names to the faces in the old photograph featured in last month’s magazine. These are Terry Sherdell and Peter Bircumshaw. One of the boys in the front row has the surname ‘Pie’ but I cannot recall his first name. I think the teacher could have quite possibly been Mr Sunderland but cannot be absolutely certain. Kind Regards Richard Bircumshaw.

Editors Note: Thanks also to Tony Shiel for also naming the same boys!

News from

Pix Brook Academy. The following is an update from the Principal Designate of Pix Brook Academy, Steve Adams. As we start February I thought it may be appropriate to share with you a brief update on the developments since the New Year. January has been extremely busy and has flown by. I consider myself to be extremely fortunate to have a group of energetic and enthusiastic people working on the developments at Pix Brook Academy with me. Personally I cannot wait to take up my post after Easter, there is no doubt that being Head of one school while trying to be involved in the multitude of decisions required to open a new one is a challenge! Having said that we have made fantastic progress during January.

I have now met with a group of prospective parents to talk through some of the decisions required over the next few months. This has included a discussion about uniform; structure / timing of the day and wrap around care. We also talked about the provision in the first year. I have explained that we will be adopting a predominantly primary model with teachers of Key stage two taking responsibility for the curriculum delivery. It is my intention to appoint a director of KS2 who will be accountable for the Y5 pupils progress. I am hoping to be able to make this appointment over the course of the next half term. As part of our work with the DfE and BEST we have developed our governance provision. I am delighted to say that Sue Howley has accepted the role of Chair of Governors for at least the first year. Sue brings a wealth of experience as a National Leader of Governance and has extensive experience of working with growing schools. In addition to the work with our community I have been attending meetings relating to the construction of the site on the Etonbury campus and the Client Engagement Meetings (CEM) with the two potential contractors for the permanent build. I am please to say that these are progressing well and I hope to be able to share some specific details in our next update. There are many other elements to the process of launching the new school, however hopefully this give you a flavour of the work being undertaken.

News from

Roecroft Lower School. A very warm welcome to Roecroft news for March. We are now over half way through the academic year. As always last month was packed with exciting curricular activities for the children. E-Safety week took place in February, each class explored and thought about the ways to stay safe while using the internet at home, as well as going on technology hunts around school and talking about the technologies they find at home and have access to. We also celebrated, ‘Shine Bright, Wear Bright’ in school. This was a day organised by CHUMS, to raise awareness of our mental health and the importance of looking after our brains, which we can do by getting good sleep, not using screen time too frequently and drinking lots of water. The children dressed in bright colours and donated money to this very important local organisation. At Roecroft we use a system of house points, the children earn Year 2 children making smoothies at the Histon Produce Workhop points for their houses for academic and sporting achievements, as well as positive behaviour and living the values. Our houses are all linked to local people from Stotfold and it has become somewhat of a school tradition to have assemblies and cheer for our houses – the school house captains give motivational and supportive speeches, and staff have been known to get a little overzealous when their house has won the cup! The houses are called Field, Roe, Kilby, Ivel and Randall. Next month we will start reporting the running totals of points earned. An update from the Key Stage 1 team: KS1 are fully engaged in their Spring term topic of ‘Yum Yum’. Both Year 1 and 2 have enjoyed workshops this term from Histon Food Produce. The children learnt about a variety of fruit and vegetables and got to taste new and exotic flavours. Each child then had a turn on the exercise bike to power the smoothie machine. The children enjoyed sampling the different flavoured smoothies, which contained a variety of fruit and vegetables. In the classroom the children have been busy reading and writing their own recipes and enjoying putting their skills into action in their weekly sessions in our food technology room. They have been evaluating existing products on the market and making ingredient choices based on their likes and dislikes. They also enjoy evaluating their work once they have tasted it! Year 1 are very much looking forward to putting on their Easter production on the 3rd April and will be busy in rehearsals throughout March. Their production is a celebration of Spring and all the exciting events that happen during the season of Spring in the build up to Easter. Hope you all enjoyed a restful February and we can now look forward to some Spring weather for March and April. Mrs Cross

Etonbury Academy. Welcome to our news for March;

2019 is an exciting year for Etonbury Academy, we have our first students sitting their important GCSE examinations. It seems impossible they are close to reaching the end of their seven year journey here at Etonbury, and with professional interviews taking place we are supporting them in making their next step. They, and all our students, have been lucky enough to benefit from the new Science, Technology, Maths, English and Study Centre facilities which were completed in August 2018. And as we continue to expand, our teaching expertise strengthens and welcomes new staff. So much has been happening since Christmas including our participation in the UK Maths Challenge with over 50 of our students taking part across our year groups, a staggering number of budding mathematicians CLAIRE’S CAT in one school! Etonbury Juniors have started to learn and read about the exciting world of Narnia, and looking forward to the dress up day to bring the experience to life. They have SITTING also had an inspirational visit from the Dogs Trust learning about Guide Dogs. Now in our 7th year! Just some of the things that have taken place in the upper years include a visit from some impressive students sharing their different experiences of ‘Life after GCSEs’, our Senior prefect team have undertaken some interesting research on mobile phone usage, presenting to our Senior Leadership Team and our Year 8 Sports Leaders supported the local lower schools who visited the Pendleton Centre for their annual sports event.

Hope was our Value of the month for January, which was incorporated in to our learning across the school. With 1100 students, we have learnt that we hope for so many different things from health to success, and our Etonbury community contribute so much towards this. Thank you.

St Mary’s Academy The month of March always brings optimism that Spring, warmer weather and brighter days are just around the corner!

This month looks to be very busy indeed starting with World Book Day. We will be inviting the children to dress up as their favourite book character or following the Bedtime Stories theme in their onesies or PJ’s on Friday 8th March. This is something the children really look forward to and each child will receive a free £1.00 World Book Day Voucher. We have the first of our class assemblies by Moonstone Class on Friday 8th followed by Coral Class Assembly on Wednesday 20th and finally Diamond Class on Wednesday 27th. Parents and carers of children in these classes are as always invited to watch and enjoy the performances.

Parent/Teacher Consultations are planned for week commencing Monday 4th March and class photographs are arranged for Wednesday 13th. We will once again be supporting Comic Relief and are inviting children to dress in red or fancy dress. We are sure we will find something fun to do on the day to raise money for this very worthwhile cause. Our annual SMSA sponsored Bounce event will take place in school on Tuesday 12th - not only does this event provide lots of fun, but the money raised enhances the education and experience of all the children in our school. On Tuesday 19th March our Year 3 children will take part in a Faith Tour to Bedford. Here the community works together to enable the children to visit a Church, Gudwara and Mosque. This helps them build on their learning and they can see firsthand the architecture, amazing buildings and gain an understanding of how different communities/religions work together. They always come back in awe of their day. On Wednesday 27th to Friday 29th March our Year 4 children will be attending our residential ‘Rock UK’ trip, an adventure event and we hope a very exciting and educational one for all involved. Historically our Year 4’s have thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The holidays will then be upon us as we break up on Friday 5th April for the Easter break. We will return for the Summer 23rd April following the Easter Bank Holiday. As always please do visit our website www.stmarysacademystotfold.co.uk for further information and regular updates.

Stotfold Junior Football Club Our under 10 girls team won their Bowl Final on 26th January battling back from a losing position to win in the last minute. Goals from Amelia Klausner and Olivia Clark with a Girl of the Game performance from Hannah Arnott. With the whole squad involved on the day, it was a great result and showed how far this group have come in the last 4 months. Well done to everyone, we all had to work hard and showed great spirit. It was great to see so many smiling faces at the end (parents and sponsors included).

Golds goalkeeper Braden Green scored direct from a kick from his own area. The ball bounced once and grazed off the head of an opposition defender into the net to put the Golds up against Bishops Stortford; the match finished a draw. As mentioned last month work has started on the changing rooms on Hitchin Road Recreation Park. We are spending £20k to renovate the changing rooms to make this a functional facility for the whole community of Stotfold.

News from Stotfold Football Club A NEW ERA DAWNS FOR STOTFOLD FC AS WORK COMMENCES ON NEW STADIUM

Work is now underway for the new football stadium and community recreation facility for Stotfold. The Stadium is due to be completed in early November which will release land at the club’s current Roker Park facility on ‘The Green’ for development by settle to bring much-needed new affordable homes to Stotfold.

Roker Park has been the home of Stotfold FC since 1965 after the club had moved from Hitchin Road Recreation ground (where we had been since 1946), to Roker Meadow. Purchased largely through the goodwill and hard work of Stotfold residents from Biggleswade District Council, boundary changes through Land Registry legislation put the ground under Stotfold Town Council’s remit with the club paying a peppercorn rent for its upkeep. When the club had a planning application for a new clubhouse approved in 2006, the Town Council proposed an alternative to coincide with the building of a Sports Community Centre at Arlesey Road. Loss of funding caused by austerity from 2010 scaled the project down, but the commitment to move the club to new premises, retained by Town Council and taken up by Central Beds, are now finally coming to fruition.

As Club Chairman Phil Pateman explains. “I am ecstatic that work has commenced on the development of our new facility. A proposed merger of Senior and Junior clubs, both of which hold FA Charter Accreditation will make us one of the largest community clubs in Herts, Beds and Bucks, providing a pathway for boys, girls and adults to play inclusive football supported by a team of highly qualified coaches. The two clubs already host over 700 players from nearly 50 teams so the recreational space available will make Arlesey Road Stadium a home to savor. The opportunity this stadium provides Stotfold community cannot be understated. Setting aside the first class changing and physio facilities, we will have a clubhouse capable of seating up to 150 people which lends itself for hiring out for functions such as the Harry Redknapp Sportsman Dinner which we have provisionally booked in November or other regular sports activities such as Yoga, Pilates, Darts and Table Tennis.” To contact the Stotfold News Magazine please call 01462 731986
