From the Editor Welcome to March!
This month marks our five year anniversary as Editor of the Stotfold News Magazine. It is so hard to believe that it also marks our 60th issue alongside hundreds of hours, too many late nights and possibly quite a few more grey hairs to add to the collection!
Already a fantastically well established magazine, we have enjoyed growing the publication and shadowing it with an informative local social media following. Hopefully we have achieved our initial aim which was to provide Stotfold with an extremely strong, local magazine - one which everyone can be very proud of. Thank you to everyone that continues to help us achieve this aim each and every month, our contributors, our delivery volunteers, our advertisers and of course, our readers.
We were thrilled this month to welcome the first ‘where do you read yours’ entry for 2020. For those unfamiliar with this feature we ask our readers to take us away with them wherever they travel each year just to see how far we can go. Last year we went to many places including New York City. We have got off to a wonderful start this year courtesy of Tim Boughan (one of our delivery volunteers) and his wife Karen as they travelled to the beautiful surroundings of Vergelegen Wine Estate near Cape Town. Thank you Tim & Karen for remembering to take us with you and for sending us this fabulous picture! This month we are looking forward to the lighter evenings as the clocks will go forward an hour at 1am on Sunday 29th March. We literally cannot wait for the cold dark evenings to vanish!
To advertise in our April issue of the Stotfold News Magazine we will need to hear from you by 6th March. Be sure to get in touch with us nice and early to secure your space.
We look forward to hearing from you soon!
Until next month.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,
The recent spate of vandalism at the Common Road Allotments over the Christmas period has left us all upset and not a little frustrated. Unfortunately, there have been other incidents of vandalism on this site over the past twelve months.
As an allotment holder and Stotfold resident I am concerned at this worrying trend.
Surely we are a caring and responsible community and should therefore do all we can to root out this unsavoury behaviour. Name witheld.
Dear Editor,
My mother showed me the class photo you have in your February magazine. I'm in it on the back row (Lisa Collier). The photograph was of Mrs Farmen's class, St Mary's Lower School, I think the year was 1983. I was about 6 years old. I can name pretty much everyone in the photo and I'm still in touch with some of them. Lisa Brewin.
Dear Editor, We would to thank the Academy of Central Bedfordshire for inviting 40 clients from Stotfold Good Neighbour Group to join them for lunch in St. Mary’s Church Hall on the 22nd of January. Proceeds from the lunch went to the Academy’s chosen charity, Retina UK. Volunteer drivers from the SGNG collected residents who had mobility difficulties from their homes and returned them after. It was a good opportunity for them to meet and chat with friends from the group in the warm friendly environment of St Mary’s Church Hall. Additionally, our thanks go to the Rev. Bill Brit of St Mary’s Church for the use of the hall and to Jo Martin from the Academy for making all this possible. A substantial sum was raised for Retina UK. Thank you to all who helped. News from
Stotfold Watermill
Shiny and new ……
As March arrives there is so much new and exciting to see. A quiet stroll around the nature reserve will see the trees and hedgerows breaking into leaf, spring flowers coming into bloom and much activity amongst the wildlife. Hopefully the water birds, including the swans, will have started to build their nests. It usually takes up to 3 weeks for construction and then a further couple of weeks to lay the full clutch of eggs. If the swans are undisturbed whilst sitting on the eggs, they will generally hatch in around 40 days so we can hope to see cygnets in May. Two pike were recently noticed in the mill reach which are known to devour young ducklings and waterfowl chicks – we hope not! Meanwhile, in the mill we are also springing into life. Our first Sunday opening is on 22nd March, which is of course Mothering Sunday, so what a treat it would be to bring mother out to Randall’s Tea Room CLAIRE’S for a delicious cream tea. If the whole family come along and children are included, we CAT SITTING have two new installations for them to experiment with. The beginning of a new season means we are looking once again to add to our teams of volunteers who help make Stotfold Watermill such a remarkable visitor attraction. If you are looking for an opportunity to develop a new interest and can contribute a few hours from time to time see the message below from our Collection box made by Ray Kilby Volunteer Support Team. Bedfordshire Police 'Good' at keeping people safe
Bedfordshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Kathryn Holloway, and Chief Constable Garry Forsyth are marking a turnaround in the assessment of the force by policing watchdog Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS).
In giving Bedfordshire Police an overall grade of ‘Good’ for police Effectiveness, Efficiency and Legitimacy, the watchdog has acknowledged the pace of improvement and quality of delivery in a force which it had previously graded as ‘Inadequate’ in 2016 (the only force in England and Wales to receive this grade at that time) and as ‘Requires Improvement’ in 2017, although Commissioner Holloway and her former Chief Constable, Jon Boutcher, challenged the inadequate grade when it was published in 2017. HMICFRS Inspectors carried out its latest ‘PEEL' assessment in July last year – which covers all of Effectiveness, Efficiency and Legitimacy in a new integrated inspection (rather than the previous single subject inspections) and which grades all 43 forces in England and Wales. The inspectors looked at departments across the force, focusing on how effectively Bedfordshire Police reduces crime and keeps people safe, how efficiently the force operates and how sustainable its services are and how legitimately it treats the public and its workforce, giving Bedfordshire Police the overall grading of ‘Good'.
Chief Constable Garry Forsyth said: “This is fabulous news and is testament to all of the hard work of our officers and staff. The report describes Bedfordshire Police as ‘an ambitious force with a positive culture’ and I’m delighted that it particularly praised our work around identifying and helping vulnerable people – recognising our dedication to protecting people and keeping them safe. While we disagreed with previous gradings, we have worked tirelessly, with the support of HMICFRS, to address their areas of concern and ensure we were as efficient and effective as possible.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,
Recently whilst clearing out at home I came across two books which I was about to discard of until I read the following inscriptions on both of them. They were as follows:
The Children’s Wonder Book. Ronald Saunders - With love and best wishes for your further happiness, Christmas December 25th 1933 From his loving Grandmother - S.M. Saunders.
The Water Babies Maureen Sayer, with love from Auntie Dorothy - August 1939. A Henlow address is printed with this. The second book seems to be borrowed from a library in 1957 and not returned. I would very much like to return these books to the families of these children and would love to hear from any relatives living nearby so that I can arrange for these to given to them to keep.
Dear Editor

News from
Fairfield Park Lower School
Welcome to our latest news..
We held our annual Mothers’ Day Afternoon Tea event this month for Years 2 & 4. All were treated to tea and juice and a selection of cakes. The event was a great success and enjoyed by everyone! The PTA had a recent quiz night and raised a fabulous £580 - thank you to everyone who attended and to the PTA for their hard work and efforts this is very much appreciated. This half term we have introduced a new value which is ‘Positivity’. Year 2 to 4 were set homework to show their understanding of our new value and we were blown away with their responses. It is clear from this homework and from the responses around school that the children are living this value already! To the right is justone example of the lovely work we received.
It has been a busy time for sporting events, a selection of KS2 children took part in a Football Competition at Flitwick Football Centre. In addition. a selection of our Year 1 and 2 children attended a Multi Skills event at Etonbury Academy where all children performed to a very high standard and were excellent ambassadors to the school. Great sporting achievements! WELL DONE TO ALL WHO TOOK PART! Our Year 4 children are excited to be embarking on our annual trip to PGL later this month. We look forward to hearing all about it on their return!

News from
St Mary’s CE Academy We are delighted to share the outcome of our recent Ofsted Inspection, which confirms that St Mary’s continues to be a Good school. The Inspection, under a new Framework which focuses more on curriculum and subject leader involvement, has recognised the many strengths of our school. The report states that 'St Mary’s remains a happy, caring community with pupils that are keen to learn and behave well.' This month looks to be very busy indeed starting with World Book Day. We will be holding a book swap and other book related activities, including a competition on Thursday 5th March. This is something we really look forward to and each child will receive a free £1.00 World Book Day Voucher. We have the first of our class assemblies by Crystal Class on Wednesday 4th and Opal Class on Friday 6th followed by Coral Class Assembly on Wednesday 11th, Moonstone Class on Wednesday 18th and finally Diamond Class on Friday 20th. Parents and carers of children in these classes are as always invited to watch and enjoy the performances.
Parent/Teacher Consultations are planned for week commencing Monday 2nd March and class photographs are arranged for Tuesday 17th. We will once again be supporting Sport Relief on Friday 13th March and are inviting children to come in non-uniform or sporty clothes. We are sure we will find something fun to do on the day to raise money for this very worthwhile cause. Our next SMSA Happy Bags Collection is planned for Friday 6th March and the annual SMSA sponsored Bounce event will take place in school on Thursday 19th - not only does this event provide lots of fun, but the money raised enhances the education and experience of all the children in our school. On Tuesday 24th March our Year 3 children will take part in a Faith Tour to Bedford. Here the community works together to enable the children to visit a Church, Gudwara and Mosque. This helps them build on their learning and they can see firsthand the architecture, amazing buildings and gain an understanding of how different communities/religions work together. They always come back in awe of their day. On Wednesday 25th to Friday 27th March our Year 4 children will be attending our residential ‘Rock UK’ trip, an adventure packed event and we hope a very exciting and educational one for all involved. Historically our Year 4’s have thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The holidays will then be upon us as we break up on Friday 3rd April for the Easter break. We will return for the Summer Term on Monday 20th April.
As always please do visit our website www.stmarysacademystotfold.co.uk for further information and updates regarding what is happening currently and what is still to come.

We are also enjoying a new literacy project this term and will be welcoming authors into our settings, exploring the works of favourites such as Linley Dodd with Hairy Maclary and friends!! We have also enjoyed a visit from Heartbeeps which had us all leaping around like March hares! We would like to send a belated Thankyou to First Steps estate and letting agents who provided an amazing hamper as first prize for our recent raffle! It was a very generous gesture and we are incredibly grateful to have their support!
Visitors are always welcome to our groups (please ring to pre-book to ensure we are not out and about searching for Spring!) We look forward to updating you on more of our news next month! Poppies Group www.poppiesandpoppyfields-nursery.co.uk Tel: 07833927906

News from
Roecroft Lower School. A very warm welcome to the March edition of Stotfold News. February was the month of Love and Friendship in school. Children celebrated the joy and importance of friendships and showing kindness and love towards others through our values and citizenships lessons. Our Roecroft family is very special indeed, and the children and staff make me very proud each day.
We have held lots of events in school, one of my favourites being our CHUMS charity day. We wore bright clothes and held two coffee mornings, which was all to raise money for CHUMS, a charity which helps support children with emotional and mental health needs. Alongside our academic achievements we also pride ourselves in offering an enormous amount of support for children to support their self-esteem, confidence and wellbeing.
Reception children in their space helmets during their ‘Mission to Mars’ Day.
FORLS, our Parent Teacher Association, held a very successful bake-off that was judged by Emma, the owner of Box of Cakes. A huge thank you to her for supporting the school and for donating the top prizes. We always feel very lucky to be so well supported by our local community. The cakes and biscuits were incredible, so thank you to our families who took part, and also to those that bought them.
During the first half of the Spring Term, the Reception children's learning was based around Space, in our 'To Infinity and Beyond!' topic. The children were thoroughly engaged with this topic and loved finding out about different astronauts. They were fascinated by the International Space Station and really enjoyed listening to stories told by astronauts from space, as well as finding out how they sleep and go to the toilet without gravity! Felix Baumgartner's free fall from the edge of the atmosphere was also of huge interest to the children, they enjoyed finding out about how fast he fell and watching him free fall. We found out about Tim Peake and Neil Armstrong, had our own space mission to Mars with Baby Bear from the 'Whatever Next?' story, found out lots of facts about different planets, designed our own aliens and made flying saucers when reading 'Aliens Love Underpants'. Also a huge thank you to our families who worked at home with the children to make some truly wonderful helmets. During the second half of the Spring Term, Reception's learning is based around the topic 'Let's Explore'. We will be planting beanstalks and keeping a diary about their growth, linking it to the story of 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. Children will also be thinking about the fun they would have if the dinosaurs came back, as well as celebrating Pancake Day and Easter.

News from
Pix Brook Academy. It is extraordinary that we are approaching the last week of the half term that will represent the halfway point of the year. I am often told I am obsessed with time, I guess it is because so much of my career has been truncated by the ringing of bells! It’s an occupational hazard. For me each half term represents a “chunk” of time that we need to have a plan for and use effectively. We have done the getting to know the pupils part of the year in the first half term, moved on to finding out what they are good and less good at and now begin to address those learning needs.
The new build is taking shape.
We seem to have filled the half term with a host of activities, perhaps the most exciting was the science day where the science SLE (Subject Leader in Education) from Samuel Whitbread brought a team of teachers and sixthform students to work with our pupils. It was a genuinely exciting day with practical lessons and experiments delivered to our classes. PBA pupils enthusiastically engaged with all elements of the lessons and for colleagues more used to working with Y10 and Y11 pupils this was a really busy day. My thanks must go to BEST and Samuel Whitbread for organising and releasing staff to do this work. Many will have noticed the rapid development of the new PBA School. The contractors Willmott Dixon have been working extremely hard to make the most of the weather and the progress is fantastic. There will be an opportunity for the community to visit the site very soon and I look forward to seeing the amazing facilities. Two final points to note: Firstly we have decided on names for the classes. Pupils were given a range of choices and we have settled on authors. Voting was undertaken to determine the three classes with Blyton; Zephaniah and Morpurgo winning the vote. These authors form part of our curriculum and some of their books are studied in Y5. Other events include our visit from the NSPCC to do an assembly and subsequent workshops. This is important work and we are supporting the NSPCC in some fundraising on Friday 7th February. Next term includes a visit from an author to facilitate a writing day and the visit to Duxford Museum, it really is all go!

News from
Etonbury Academy. Welcome to our latest news... Just a few weeks into the new year and Etonbury Academy has been celebrating with our students who are growing in to respectful, caring and ambitious children and young adults. Ian Evason, Principal, welcomed some of our most supportive students who regularly help out at our events and activities, to a morning reward and ‘thank you’ meeting with hot chocolate and biscuits.
Students have been out and about already this year, spending their weekend at the Basketball League finals and many heading to Harry Potter World. Year 11s have welcomed the opportunity to be interviewed by professionals, gaining experience for their future apprenticeship scheme, or attending sixth forms and colleges. They have also had valuable careers talks and learnt about potential roles they may not have previously considered. We have had a visit from a company who brought Romeo and Juliet to life in the hall, engaging our students with some even joining in, such a creative way to learn.
Year 5s have been going Out of this World in their Earth and Space project whilst entering the wardrobe of Narnia. Wingardium Leviosa! echoes down the corridor as Year 6 dig deep into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and his amazing antics. After months of rehearsal and preparation around thirty of our pupils travelled all the way to Wembley, to perform alongside thousands of other pupils during the Young Voices experience. We are very proud of their achievements and look forward to next term where we explore all aspects of being environmentalists and meet the Terrible Tudors!
As we head into Spring, we can enjoy the lighter mornings and evenings which always makes things seem so much brighter. More to look forward to, particularly the weekly anticipation of which of our children will receive that Friday praise text. For those that are not aware, all our staff nominate students each week who have contributed, worked hard or made a difference to Etonbury, and a text gets sent home to their parent or carer. It’s humbling that so many of our students really do contribute to Etonbury Academy being the BEST that we can be.

News from Larksfield Surgery (on behalf of the Larksfield PPG- Patient Participation Group)
RECENT MERGER WITH THE STANMORE MEDICAL GROUP- YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
As you are aware, Stanmore Medical Group joined Larksfield Partnership in December. This means we have an increase in doctors that will be seeing patients at Larksfield. We are pleased to welcome the following doctors to our existing Larksfield team: Dr Keith Aubin Dr Konrad S Kaminski, Dr Moushumi C Coreira, Dr Sally K Lindsey, Dr Ashwin Dixit, Dr Pragasen P Moodley, Dr Meeraj Hoda, Dr Shamil Mubarak, Dr Priyanka Joshi, Dr Naomi D Selvadurai and Dr Rajeev Kaja. We have received a number of questions on the Larksfield PPG Facebook page and have put these to the Larksfield management team below. Can you please explain how Stanmore will improve the service? Stanmore Medical Group is a large multi- disciplined training practice. They will bring stability and sustainability to Larksfield Surgery. We are looking to build on the excellent foundations of Larksfield by improving access to clinicians and additional services and clinics. Will this put more pressure on the surgery if the number of patients increases? The number of patients registered at Larksfield may increase due to the housing developments taking place. We will of course monitor this with a view to increasing clinician numbers if necessary. Biggleswade & Sandy have merged and offer Saturday & Sunday appointments. Will this be the case now with Larksfield? Surely we should be merging with a ‘Beds’ surgery? Larksfield is part of the Ivel Valley Primary Care Network (PCN). PCN’s are delivering Extended Access appointments until 8pm Monday to Friday and Saturday and Sunday Appointments. Will Larksfield still take in all the new patients of new homes being built Are you having having in Stotfold? computer Larksfield will continue to welcome registrations in our catchment area. problems? pr oblems? Does this mean we can access services within ‘Herts’; for example Herts have a better children’s mental health service? No. Larksfield will be continue to work under Bedfordshire CCG. Is there any plan to extend the size of the building? There are no plans at present to extend. Why wasn’t the proposal put out for patients’ views? We want our views listened to. You may have seen in the press the number of GP Practices closing or merging due to the lack of workforce and volume of work. Stanmore Medical Group was approached with regard to getting involved with Larksfield to provide a sustainable proposition for the future. This was the only option for Larksfield, therefore we needed to go ahead with this merger . We have talked to the PPG at Larksfield to share our thoughts. Salvage of the Navvy - Part 2 Written exclusively for the Stotfold News Magazine by Steve Maddox
Last month we told you about the early days of the ‘crane’ from the Blue Lagoon. This month we can bring you the story of how Ray Hooley from Lincolnshire had the idea and made a plan to recover the machine for restoration. After months of detailed discussions a date was set on a very cold January morning for an initial survey dive. This revealed the machine was in very good condition considering its 40 or so years submerged in the mineral rich water. A schedule of work was drawn up with meticulous planning for 25 weekends. 20 divers were enlisted for the mammoth task with Kevin McLaughlin and his right hand man Jim Champley as Project Organiser. Safety Officer, Alistair Mackay was selected for this unenviable post. Ray Hooley wanted the machine, if possible, to be recovered and restored to working order for future display in the Museum of Lincolnshire Life. (From the article by D.V. Speller ‘PLUCKING A MAMMOTH OUT OF A PIT’
The ‘306’ working in the pit to excavate chalk
"Now we could ferry equipment down for the first working dive, which entailed general cleaning and clearing debris such as corrugated sheeting and various small items, thus giving us a clear view of the task ahead. Next we adapted and made tools to fit the varying nuts and bolts which had previously been measured under water. Completely exhausted, the first two divers on this job were replaced by two fresh divers who were able to complete the job just at the end of their air endurance. We had previously unbolted the boiler, which alone weighed six tons, and set chain round the circumference ready for pulling clear of the main carriage. Once the Diamond T had been shackled to the towing chain it was a comparatively easy task – but spectacular to see the turbulence on the surface when the boiler hit the bottom. Now the pins securing the jib to the main Navvy must be removed. This was a very difficult task and proved to be so. Following this failure, we moved on to more technical machinery – in the form of a 14lb sledgehammer and drift. We found that with four divers holding the 16-stone hammer-man in an upright position, he was able to knock the pins out. All the larger parts were now free from the Navvy and ready for lifting, and we took advantage of the generous offer from John Wise, who not only had offered and given the lifting bags, but also came along in person to participate in the lifting operations. At last we were ready for the complete lift of the main body of the Navvy, which we estimated to weigh 28 tons. The first team of divers attached lifting strops around each axle (four in number) then the five-ton bags were attached to the lifting strops and inflated.
The Navvy rose with great dignity and with very little manpower was pulled slowly to the bank.
