From the Editor Welcome to May!

As I write this month’s column we have our garden doors open and the sun is pouring in -long may it last! We hope it lasts right up until after the Stotfold Mill weekend which is on the 11th and 12th of May! Please do pop down and say hello if you are planning a visit, our stall is usually just inside the gates of the entrance. We love being a part of this weekend and thoroughly enjoy talking to lots of our readers and members of the community.

Speaking of community, we are often asked whether we think the very concept of community still exists in a town which has grown so very much in the years we have lived here. Of course we always answer yes, however last week we witnessed something which for us, epitomised the very sense of the word. Almost four hundred people crammed in to St Mary’s Church to attend the funeral of one of Stotfold’s well known personalities. There was not a seat to be had, or a space that wasn’t filled. The throng of people forming a procession up to the cemetery really was a sight to be seen. It reenforced for us, the meaning of community. In this instance our community came together to remember Laura, a very well-known face in our town- familiar with many of our readers if you didn’t know her first hand. In fact, Laura was one of the very first people we met when we came to live back in Stotfold almost twenty years ago. Her laugh was infectious, her bravery unrivalled and we joined so many people in our community in supporting her family in giving her the send-off she so richly deserved. You’ll find a tribute to Laura from her family on our family announcement page this month. If you are ever asked the question does the community in Stotfold still exist, we hope you too will answer yes. It doesn’t matter how long you have lived in the town, the community of Stotfold remains one we should be immensely proud of. This month we welcome a new delivery volunteer Carrie who will be delivering along the High Street as long term volunteer Jackie hangs up her bag. We are thankful to Jackie for the many years she has given us and to Carrie for taking over this role.

All that is left for us to say is we hope you enjoy this month’s magazine. We welcome into our community the new owners of the Chequers pub - you will see their advert in this month’s issue. Please pop in and introduce yourselves, they are keen to get to know everybody and meet many of the Stotfold community we have told them so much about.

We look forward to seeing you all at the Mill!

Stotfold’s London Marathon Runners 2019 Depending on when you receive your magazine this month, you may have already seen the runners taking part in the Virgin Money London Marathon. Several runners from Stotfold were taking part, here are just some of their stories... On the 28th April Andrew Porter will be running his first ever Marathon after ten years of trying to get a spot. Andrew has been a keen runner for 25 years and has always had a lifetime goal to run a marathon, especially in London. Andrew is a member of the North Herts Running Club (squirrels). Andrew has chosen to run the race for Children with Cancer UK. Every day 12 families in the UK receive the devastating news that their child has cancer. Through funding vital specialist research, Children with Cancer UK has done everything in its power to give these children the best chance to survive. Through Virgin Money Giving, Stotfold News Magazine readers can support Andrew by visiting https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/AndrewPorter20. Emma & Oliver Collins will be running the 2019 London Marathon for Asthma UK. The Stotfold couple hope to raise a great amount of money for this fantastic cause. You can read more about their story: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/olicollinsvlm.

Emma & Oliver Collins

Andrew Porter

Well done and congratulations to everyone running in this magnificent event. Over 40,000 will be taking part, these people will range from some of the worlds most elite athletes, to everyday normal people who will just be aiming to complete the marathon. The training alone is such a mammoth undertaking. We look forward to hearing how Andrew, Emma and Oliver get on!

If you know somebody that took part this year, please be sure to drop us a line and let us know how they did...

TEASEL

MAY BULLETIN

Spring has definitely sprung, and things are hotting up at the Nature reserve.

In early April the swans built their nest and are incubating some eggs – don’t get too close though or Mr Swan will chase you off! The willow osiers have been reaped – they grow several metres tall, and the fatter ends are used in the hedge laying, while the thinner ends are used to fill holes in the boundaries of the reserve. Here you can see some osier ends next to the beginnings of a bug hotel. Lengths of log are stacked up, and as they rot, become a home to all manner of insects. Solitary bees, some wasps and bumblebees do not live within a hive with a queen. There are males and females, and a fertilized female makes a nest in wood and bores into the wood in order to construct a nursery.

At the far end of the reserve, near the mound the ground is too rough for our ride-on mowers, so it has to be strimmed, and the ground raked off afterwards. The strimmers are bigger than what you might use at home, and our volunteers wear full protective gear. The maintenance of the reserve is a year-round activity, but tend to peak in the late spring, when nature is at its peak. To find out more about Teasel and the work we do please contact Teasel c/o Stotfold Watermill Mill Lane, Stotfold Herts SG5 4NU

News from

Stotfold Watermill

So much on and a visit from Oscar …..

To begin with we must give an apology. In last month’s report we said that Captain Neville’s Flying Circus will not be appearing at this year’s Steam Fair and Country Show on 11th/12th May. We are now able to report that due to a change in CAA policy we can now proceed with Captain Neville’s aerobatic display. Further, we are also pleased to announce the RAF will be providing a flypast by a Battle of Britain Spitfire on Saturday, flight commitments and weather conditions permitting. At the time of writing we are unsure at what time it will appear. This year is likely to be the last occasion that the flying team will appear in Stotfold, so make sure you do not miss their performance scheduled for around 1.00pm on each day.

Stotfold News readers will have received a copy of the event programme with last months magazine and hopefully many of you have taken the opportunity to purchase Young Miller for the day Oscar advanced tickets at the 20% discounted price. You still have until Friday 10th to do so by going online at www.stotfoldmill.com. Alternatively, you have the opportunity to win a two free entry tickets by entering our competition in this edition.

11th/12th May is National Mills Weekend organised by The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, when mills throughout the country will be opening their doors. We are anticipating a great number of visitors from far afield to Stotfold Mill, drawn by the fantastic events taking place in the arena, the Saunders Steam Collection, many trade and craft stalls and much, much more. Additionally, remember that children from the Stotfold and Arlesey Lower Schools will be performing in the arena as well as members of the Gifford’s Dance Academy, all deserving your support and encouragement. Unfortunately, the Stotfold Twirlers are unable to perform for us due to national training but instead we have another local majorette troupe, The Crystalites from Letchworth. The organising team are still keen to welcome drivers of classic cars on site too during the weekend. You still have the opportunity to purchase tickets for Live @The Mill, an evening of rock music, featuring bands Allergy and ChromeS, being held in the beer marquee at the showground on Friday 10th May from 7.00pm. Tickets, costing £7.50, can be obtained from our website. We continue to book other attractions and activities at the mill to reach out to our wider community. Debbie Gribben of Your Inner Peace is holding a Laughter Yoga Session on 22nd May and a Fermented Food Workshop on 1st June. Details of these events can be found on her website www.yourinnerpeace.uk.com/events. Joe Carter, http://carterfitness.co.uk , has been running early morning fitness sessions in the mill meadow. Our own forthcoming activities include a Silver Jewellery Workshop on 18th May as well as Acrylic Collage and Watercolour Workshops later in the summer which can all be booked at www.stotfoldmill.com. For children, ages 5-11, the Education team are also running Nature Detectives, exploring the wonders of the Nature Reserve on 31st May. Our Sunday afternoon openings have continued to attract large numbers of visitors. On our first weekend we were pleased to welcome a Young Miller, 9-year old Oscar from Watford, who spent the afternoon at the Mill learning about its machinery and how it works. He ran Samuel, our French Burr stone and made a sack of flour. Oscar approached us after we featured in the SPAB Mills Section magazine. Children visiting the mill on a Sunday can win an opportunity to become a miller by entering our Count the Rats and Mice competition.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, Re: Memories of Stotfold.

Early wartime I recall shopping with my mother in Mrs Lin’s shop opposite the Recreation Ground, Hitchin Road. Cows were kept in the rec at the time with swings and a sandpit - we were not afraid of them! Coppice Mead residents had garden gates - one day being playful children we forgot to close these gates and many cows trampled across the gardens!

Shops: Trebles Butchers (Hitchin Road before moving to the High Street). Jimmy Hallworths - I loved this shop, the best ice-cream too! Edgars, A small old fashioned shop selling menswear, with suits being wrapped in brown paper. Burrs, Mr Burr being quite a gentleman in manner and all the children being well behaved in there! Bettys shoe shop at the crossroads, Cramps Garage, Stan Dears Cycles, Tuckers Grocery (now Vegas Fish shop), Charles Fish & Chips, Regent Stores, Days Veg & Grocery, Cobblers on the High Street, Hydes Newsagents, Hydes Saddlers, Smiths store with furniture upstairs, toys, curtains and DIY. Along by the Green you could find Samsons then Caresses Grocers, Vera Rainbows shop selling cigarettes and sweets (all the bus drivers went in there!) Borst Bros along Taylors Road sold wooden products, items made for aeroplanes in World War II and also donated the toilet block building at The Green in the late 1940’s. This was vandalised and sadly removed. Kings Bakery and Shop - later Hilditch Groceries. Flittons DIY shop could also be found along this road.

In Brook Street you could find Roses, a grocers and off licence - a lovey store with large wide steps outside. Close to where you will now find the Chemist stood Floods Newsagents and Post Office and along the High Street was Wakes Bakers. Woodhouses sold veg from the local farms and there was Maurice’s Hairdressers above the chemist. Where the India Lodge now stands were more cows, opposite the Dairy. On our way to school we would wait for Miss Smith and her cows to cross the road back from being milked. Miss Smith delivered the milk to Stotfold residents. We also had a horse and cart delivering milk in Stotfold, this was delivered in all weathers by a gentleman named Jack.

The coal in Stotfold was delivered by Ted from a business in Brook Street next to the thatched cottage on Hitchin Road. We had an awful winter in the 1940s, the brook flooded in Brook Street - too deep for us to walk to school! Ted the coalman arrived with his big heavy horses and long trailer scattered with coal dust and off we went to school! It was great fun.

During the holidays, Mums, Grans, Aunts and lots of children rode on farm trailers to the fields to do pea picking. We filled sacks, they were weighed and we were paid. We also took peas and potatoes home.

I recall being at St Mary’s School in 1945 or 1946 and all the children walking from the school to the Stotfold cinema along Arlesey Road. Very nervously but proudly we were dressed for the stage scenes and sang and performed. The girls in my class rocked and nursed dolls, we sang ‘We will rock you’ to the baby Jesus in our arms.

These are just a few memories I have of growing up in the town. I hope you have enjoyed reading them. A Stotfold Magazine reader.

Green wheel route shown in bold

On Sunday 19th May 2019, the walking route of the Etonbury Green Wheel will officially be launched. The Etonbury Green Wheel links the communities of Stotfold, Arlesey and Fairfield using paths which pass through and beside areas of landscape, heritage and wildlife interest. Etonbury Wood lies at the ‘hub’ of the wheel and is connected to the ‘rim’ of the wheel using access ‘spokes’. Several events are planned on the afternoon of Sunday 19th May to celebrate the official launch of the walking route. A guided walk will leave Stotfold Mill at 1pm on Sunday 19th May to arrive at Etonbury Wood in time for the official launch at 3pm. Guided walks will also be available from Fairfield and Arlesey.

You are welcome to join us for a guided walk or simply come for the launch at 3pm at Etonbury Wood. After the launch there will be a guided tour of Etonbury Wood and an Xplorer event for the children. Refreshments will be available from the Fox & Duck Pub, Stotfold Road from 2pm – 5pm and local organisations will have stalls providing information on their activities. The Green wheel is a partnership between Central Bedfordshire Council, Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity (BRCC), Stotfold Town Council, Arlesey Town Council and Fairfield Parish Council. Further information will be available from 7th May at http://www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/leisure/countryside/greenwheels/local.aspx and from the local town and parish councils.

Letters to the Editor Dear Stotfold Dog owners,

Please keep your dog on a lead when out walking in public areas. I am sick of asking you all nicely. I don’t want your dog bounding up to me and mine. I don’t like other people’s dogs and having been the victim of a dog attack I don’t want to hear how yours is different, or it’s my problem, or my dog shouldn’t be out.

I certainly don’t expect abuse because you are being asked a perfectly reasonable request of keep your dog away from me.

It’s not my problem, its your dog and you should be in control of it. If your dog is not on a lead, you can’t see where it makes its mess and are not being a responsible dog owner.

Respect other peoples wishes not to be bothered by your dog. Its really simple.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

As a regular dog walker in Stotfold, I am made aware fairly regularly that not all owners are quite as diligent in clearing up after their dog’s as might be hoped. What takes some understanding though, is that those who do pick up but leave the resulting bag of faeces where picked up on the footpath, or even hanging in a tree!

But it would appear from the photo below, that one particular owner who walks a dog in St Mary’s church yard, has taken this lack of consideration to new heights, as despite there being three dog bins within 100 yards, the bush adjoining the footpath through to Chequers Close is the preferred disposal point for his/her purple bags! To leave one bag is thoughtless, but to leave the four or five seen there this morning, is shameless.

Dear Editor,

On Wednesday 27/3 I was driving along the High Street, having just come from the Co op , at around 1 o’clock . There was a small queue of traffic heading toward the traffic lights , thinking perhaps a learner driver was ahead I patiently followed slowly along . It became apparent that it was a funeral cortège. A car 2 cars ahead of me thought it was ok to overtake this procession! not only was the driver speeding they showed complete and utter disrespect!

I would like to apologise, on their behalf to the bereaved family and assure them that not all Stotfold residents behave this way.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

I have this morning enjoyed a wonderfully peaceful walk around the Stotfold Mill Meadows Nature Reserve, this is a very special place which has no formal right of way through it but a permissive path which winds around the meadow and ponds allowing people quiet enjoyment of our little bit of Bedfordshire.

Without the efforts from a dedicated group of volunteers this place would not be as attractive or accessible as it is. Work continues throughout the year to mow grass, clear fallen branches and install new features such as the bird hide, information boards and benches. All this to benefit the local community, it really grieves me then to see that some users of this special place have no regard for the hard work and passion put in to create such a pleasant place. Instead ignoring signs to keep their dogs on a lead and pick up after it, some leave litter and others, more recently, seem to think the bird hide was put up for their personal use for out of hours socialising.

In a World with so much trouble in it I understand we do have to be tolerant of this 'anti-social behaviour' to some extent, I turn a blind eye to people doing 30 in the 20 zone, a bonfire on a sunny summers day when your washing is on the line or a noisy party late at night because we do all have to get along and we are all human. BUT please could I use your letters page to raise awareness of those who use the nature reserve - your actions are noted. Please be considerate of all the other users of the reserve and most importantly the wildlife that lives there.

We are privileged to be able to have this resource on our doorstep so value it and respect as you would your own home.

Thanks Liz Anderson

News from

Roecroft Lower School. We enjoyed our Easter holidays in April and it was wonderful to enjoy lighter mornings and some warmer weather. The new local park has been a huge hit with our families and has been a daily hive of activity. We celebrated Mother’s Day in school - we welcomed special women in our children’s lives to join us for some classroom activities and biscuits. The children loved the opportunity to share this special time in their classrooms and it was wonderful to see the school so busy and filled with love and happiness.

During the last week of spring term our year 1 pupils performed their Easter Production ‘Spring has Sprung!’ The children all worked incredibly hard to put on a fantastic show to their families as well as people from our local community whom we gladly welcomed to join us for this superb celebration! Year one children performing their Easter Show. We now look forward to a busy Summer Term with lots more exciting events in the calendar for our children and families to enjoy. An Update from the Early Years Team: Over the last half term in Reception we have been learning through our topic 'Let's Explore!' We have done some exciting science experiments, including making butter from cream, creating colourful patterns from skittles and making volcanoes from mentos and coke. We also grew our own beanstalks, found out about dinosaurs and investigated what happens in the different seasons. We have now started our new topic 'Read all About It!' During this half term we will be basing our learning around the stories 'Little Red Riding Hood', 'The Jolly Postman', Handa’s Surprise' 'The Three Little Pigs' and 'The Gruffalo'. We will also be retelling and writing our own stories as well as creating our own characters and writing our own letters for the postman to deliver. Our Values for May are Quality and Thoughtfulness. St Mary’s Academy The Spring Term was rounded off with the popular SMSA Easter Egg Hunt and Competitions and special Easter Services at St Mary’s Church. Since then we have all had a lovely Easter holiday with plenty of chocolate and a little sunshine! Summer activities are well under way and our Year 4 trip to Rock UK will have taken place.

This month our Year 3’s have a busy month with a trip to Hazard Alley in Milton Keynes on Friday 3rd May. This is a purpose-built interactive centre where children can experience hazardous scenarios in perfect safety. Later in the month they will also be participating in a Roman Workshop which always proves to be a fun way to follow the curriculum! There is a planned KS2 trip to Tom Gates Live at Milton Keynes Theatre on Friday 10th May. Once again this year, a very good friend of the school, Mr Steve Darlow, is organising Cricket Club for us. Steve started running Cricket Club for us when his boys were at St Mary’s and even though they are now young men, Steve still volunteers his time each summer to run the Club. Thank you Steve, this is very much appreciated and as always, we look forward to one of the young cricketers playing for England one day. Also this month the SMSA has the annual Parents V School event booked for Friday 24th May – Trainers and water bottles at the ready, the children are determined to win! Stotfold Festival Week -Friday 14th to Sunday 23rd June.

As you may be aware, we are organising the Festival Fete again this year. This will be on Saturday, 22nd June between 1.00pm and 4.00pm at St Mary’s CE Academy, Rook Tree Lane. We have sent letters to past stall holders and participants but if you are interested in having a stall, please contact us. All donations will go jointly to local charities – The Need Project and The Good Neighbour Group and the St Mary’s Parents Association IT Fund. We have a number of attractions already booked and we are praying for a sunny day! If you would like further information or a booking form, please contact the office at St Mary’s Academy on 01462 730343. We would like to take this opportunity of thanking everyone in advance for their support.

News from

Etonbury Academy. March has been a great month with so many student successes.

Early in the month some of our students attended a ‘WE Day’ in London hosted by The Duke of Sussex, with many other celebrities and inspirational speakers. The event was for young people who have made a significant contribution to the school or local community, so we had a very difficult task of selecting just a small number of our students to attend. Year 5s are getting back in to learning following their actioned packed time at their adventurous residential week at Condover Hall. Etonbury Juniors held an awards evening to celebrate student achievements through the year so far, with so many being rewarded for their successes by Form Tutors and subject leaders. We have also seen some fantastic characters come in to school for World Book Day, followed by “Out of this World” topic for WOW Week. A local music group, The Peregrine Recorder Orchestra, kindly performed to our KS2 students inspiring many to enjoy the recorder. Year 6 have been working hard as always which will no doubt prepare them for their SATS in May. In the upper years, there were so many successes in sports, drama, dance and maths to mention. It’s amazing how many different activities our students get involved with in and out of school, including rock climbing, rhythmic gymnastics, roller hockey, as well as being involved in community groups.

We have been running GCSE taster sessions for those selecting their options, and of course we have to mention that we are now entering the most important time for the school, and our GCSE students. They have worked so hard, and shown so much maturity in preparation for their exams. Over 120 students from all year groups finished this month performing in two nights of ‘Cabaret’ for our parents, carers and staff. A spectacular evening showcasing talented students, particular thanks must go to Mrs Hardy and the staff for their hard work.

News from Larksfield Surgery (on behalf of the Larksfield PPG- Patient Participation Group)

We start this update with a notice for all patients. It is with regret we announce that Dr Ali Al-Badry left Larksfield Surgery on 31st March. We are pleased to confirm that, while no longer a partner, Dr Al-Badry will still be working here as a locum GP from time to time. We would like to reassure all our patients that we are actively recruiting as part of the ongoing development of the Practice. We hope to introduce you to our new Doctors in the coming months.

It has come to our attention that we do not always have the most up to date contact numbers for our patients, which means when it comes to cancelling appointments at short notice the messages do not always reach you. If you change your telephone number please remember to inform reception of this change. Unfortunately due to extensive staff shortages and to ensure continued patient safety the Practice has made the very difficult decision to suspend dispensing medication to patients until further notice. Before your next request for medication please tick on the repeat form or specify online for an alternative chemist to get your medication dispensed. Dispensary will remain open to deal with medication requests and queries.

Patients will notice that once a month Larksfield Surgery shuts for the afternoon for training purposes. This is called a PLZ afternoon. PLZ stands for Protected Learning Zone and is commissioned by Bedfordshire CCG. It is mandatory that every surgery in the Ivel Valley area is required to take part. This ensures that all staff members are up to date on training. This includes all Doctors and nurses. When Larksfield Surgery is shut for training, NHS 111 take over from 2pm. STOTFOLD METHODISTS
