From the Editor Welcome to our May edition! Each time we complete an issue we get excited thinking about how much we hope our readers are going to enjoy reading that month’s issue and how many great articles and features we managed to fit in. This month’s magazine is no exception, with plenty for everyone to enjoy. We are thrilled that most of our local businesses managed to re-open this month and we have really enjoyed seeing everyone out and about responsibly enjoying a drink at their favourite pub - you can see a special message from Councillor Richard Wenham, Leader of Central Bedfordshire Council on page 29 as he urges everyone to support Stotfold’s local businesses.

May 2021

This month we have enjoyed playing our part in the local community by handing out lots of litter picking kits, kindly donated to the Stotfold News Magazine by one incredibly kind Stotfold resident. Thank you to everyone that stepped forward to help out with keeping Stotfold clean - more on page 23. Along with our usual magazine duties, we were delighted to have been able to help a few Stotfold residents who were unable to access the online booking system with booking their second Covid vaccinations this month - all in a days work! Thank you to Krista Gendron for the gorgeous picture of the blossom tree we chose to use as our front cover for May - usually we are following the theme of the Mill Fayre for our May issue but with obvious restrictions in place, it is unfortunate that this event is unable to take place. As always, thank you to everyone that has been in touch with us this month - we love hearing from you and helping out in our community wherever we can. Until next month,

Joanne

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

We moved to Stotfold on a cold January day – rather late in the afternoon due to solicitors running behind(!!!) - and were welcomed to Baldock Road with a very necessary cup of tea and chocolate cake from the lady across the road. Thank you Linda!! Then, the following day, we had to go out for milk, and on our return found that our ex neighbour’s daughter – who already lives in Stotfold – had been to deliver a plate of homemade scones and Jam! Thank you Beverly!! Needless to say, I have already given my thanks to the ladies concerned, but wanted to acknowledge them via your lovely magazine. How good to have a forum where such kindnesses can be acknowledged.

I really would like to thank two Stotfold ladies Linda and Gill for inspiring me to go litter picking. I still work full time so cannot dedicate as much time as they do, but I do join in the quest to keep Stotfold tidy whenever I can.

Penny Mitchell Dear Editor, We would like to commend builder Bernie Gray for his response to a recent emegency call-out. His swift action and consideration, combined with knowledge, skill and experience was greatly appreciated and went way beyond that which you might hope to receive in normal times, let alone the current situation everyone is in. - A true Professional in every respect. Thank you - D H & S

Dear Editor, We have an unusual item for sale. It is a brand new petrol earth Auger Drill with post hole digger borers. We are seeking £150, this is half price.

I am reaping a lot of rewards from litter picking, getting fitter, and losing weight, meeting a lot of very nice people along the way and of course helping our local environment.......... Chris H

Dear Editor,

Thanks to Steve Barrow and to Ken Bygrave for supplying us with the following names: Back- Fred Hughes, Geoff Brown, Bob Patrick, Frank Miles, Ivan Knott, Tom Pearce, Ken Kitchener and manager Stanley Barrow. Front - Bill Lewis, Ken Bygrave, Tommy McGuiness, ? Radcliffe, Ron West. Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, I am a member of the East Beds Model Railway Society and we are shortly to be evicted from the premises we have occupied for the past 46 years due to the building being completely refurbished. We therefore urgently need to secure new premises for our society that will provide sufficient space to allow us to store our layouts and equipment and also to set up and run the layouts. Unfortunately, there is a lack of suitable premises for local community groups such as ours, so I am writing to ask if anyone has, or knows of, any safe, affordable and weatherproof premises that might be available for us to rent. For information, we traditionally meet at our clubrooms one evening a week to run, and work on, the layouts. At this time we also welcome any members of the public, of any age group or ability, who wish to visit, to chat about railway modelling, or to become more involved in the society. At all other times the premises are used primarily for storage. Our society is not run for profit, so cost is a significant factor for us. All proceeds are ploughed back into the society to pay our rent, fund our layouts and finance the annual exhibition that we run every February at Stratton School, Biggleswade. We regularly exhibit our layouts around Britain and have been a feature of Bedfordshire life for 60 years. It would be a shame for a society with such a long association with the area to have to be wound up for want of suitable premises. Can you help? We need dry, secure storage, and preferably space for Society activities, but commercial rents are unfortunately out of the question. Please contact us via info@ebmrs.org or secretary@ebmrs.org.uk if you can help with anything in the East Beds area. Bob Harrold

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

During the Covid lockdown many of us discovered or reconnected with nature, taking the precious hours’ daily exercise and venturing out into the Bedfordshire countryside that we are so lucky to have around Stotfold. As we move from fresh Spring days into the warmth of Summer many of us will be once again taking to the footpaths. The area around Etonbury Woods provides just that opportunity to see and hear nature at its best. As you walk by the fields on the Etonbury Green Wheel take time to breathe in your surroundings. Look along the Pix Brook and you may be treated to a flash of electric blue as a Kingfisher darts up the channel. Stop and listen to the water flowing and the sound of bird song high above you. One such bird that fills our local skies with glorious song is the skylark. Cast your eyes upward to see a tiny dot from where the dulcet tones are emanating from. Many may not know this little brown bird when it’s on the ground but its distinctive song will be familiar. Males are highly territorial and use long, fluttering song flights at altitude to demonstrate their quality to would be partners or rivals. The skylark, together with yellowhammer and corn bunting are farmland birds that have hung on to the remaining arable landscapes in our part of Bedfordshire, they are all classified as Red List species because of the dramatic decline their populations are suffering from loss of habitat. So, when you go for a walk this Summer make sure to take note of all the wonderful wildlife and countryside we have around us; appreciate it, care for it and acknowledge how good it makes you feel. BODYWORK -

I was surprised and disappointed to read in last month’s edition that Larksfield Surgery has accepted a £1,500 donation from UK Land and a second anonymous benefactor, to purchase a new ECG machine. While at face value this appears like a generous and newsworthy donation, it is important to note that UK Land has applied for planning permission for another 181 homes on agricultural and wildlife land behind the houses on Hitchin Road in Stotfold. To accept such a donation at a time when the community that the surgery serves is for the most part, railing against yet more housing in Stotfold is poor judgement and shows a lack of understanding of the feelings of local people; as well as potentially being a conflict of interest. Name witheld. Dear Editor,

She would like to say thanks for a fantastic and efficient job carried out. They cleared away all the debris and replaced all the fixtures & fittings and left the back yard clean & tidy. Sue would thoroughly recommend them. On behalf of Sue Sparks

No1 Bestseller For Stotfold Author Debut steampunk adventure novel sees Stotfold author become Amazon number one bestseller..

Steven Smith (pictured right) has lived in Stotfold since 2014. An avid reader of books, he has reviewed them on his website Books and Beyond Reviews since 2015. Though not related to his career path, reading and writing have always been major passions. In November 2019, he started work on an idea that became his first novel, Chasing Shadows. He has also built up a small catalogue of short stories that can be found on his author website and has already started work on the second novel in what will become a series. Chasing Shadows is out soon and will be available on eBook from Amazon.

As Captain of the airship Arcos, Edison Crow and his childhood partner in crime, Selah, lead their crew in search of a big payday. When it comes to the pursuit of wealth, nothing is out of the question for this band of charming rogues. Smuggling. Theft. Embezzlement. It's all part of a daring game. But all is not smooth sailing when you're a high profile thief with a target on your back. A job gone wrong will thrust Edison, Selah and those aboard the Arcos upon a journey straight to the heart of the shady United Republic of the High Commission in pursuit of the truth. Troubled by his own personal demons, Edison must navigate dark skies if he hopes to gain answers. Will it be enough to help the infamous Captain Crow clear his and his crew's names? Or will he end up chasing shadows? Steven (pictured above) and his book Chasing Shadows. Chasing Shadows is the first in a planned series following the charismatic rogue Edison Crow, his childhood friend Selah and a ragtag crew seeking a better life for themselves.

“Smith's world-building, particularly regarding the various factions, is rich and convincing. Through this world, Captain Edison Crow's motley crew leads the reader on a breakneck journey full of adventure and intrigue.” - A.K. Alliss - cyberpunk and fantasy author Paperbacks will be available from Steven, and later on Amazon. Local PRA - New Members Welcome YOUR LOCAL PARACHUTE REGIMENTAL ASSOCIATION.

Over the last two years the above charity organisation has been reformed in our local area offering support to Airborne veterans and new members who have served in the Regiment including our TA units. We are a friendly group of likeminded soldiers who all enjoy talking to eachother, socialising together and offering support for issues such as PTSD. All members have access to a free mental health consultation, which our Branch can support independently and privately. Currently our group is growing stronger in numbers but we still need new members.

Before lock down we held monthly meetings, taking place on the first Wednesday in the month. We hope to re-instate these as soon as possible but have continued to meet virtually during the last few months. Eventually, meetings will take place all round Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire In 2020 we had a lot of trips organised, a BBQ and several functions but unfortunately due to Covid19 these were put on hold..so as not to miss out, we are all on Facebook and have opened a chat room for regular beers together which has been a great source of enjoyment for us all.

For further details, contact Tony Waudby 3 PARA 75-93 Email: awaudby60@googlemail.com Tel: 07504712674 Local group members with their fundraising stall at a local event. We look forward to hearing from you.

News from

Stotfold Watermill

We want you back again, but….. Anxious as we are to welcome visitors back to the mill, we still remain uncertain as to when we might begin to open again on Sunday afternoons. Whilst the government has yet to confirm the future steps on ‘Roadmap out of Lockdown’, it is apparent that we will not be able to open before Step 4 on 21st June but even then, there will be difficulties to overcome. The restricted space around the mill floors will limit the number of visitors who can view the mill workings while any social distancing rules are in place and strict marshalling might need to be implemented. Work has been done to provide suitable screening for customers in the tearoom but numbers will need to be limited and controlled. It would seem the only way forward will be to operate a time-limited booking system for teas which would also permit the opportunity to tour the mill. Mill tours alone or casual visits would not be available. For all of our customers anxious to buy our flour and oats we will look at how we can make sales available outside the confines of the Kingfisher shop.

In order to carry out any proposals for re-opening it is going to be critical to maintain and enhance our team of volunteers. In particular we will be urgently seeking: • Bookings team. One or more people who would organise and take bookings for Sunday. Visitors. • Marketing team. A team leader and volunteers to work on publicity of the mill and future events. • Kingfisher shop. Management and staff for the shop. All of these volunteer roles are critical to the future of the mill but can take as little or as much time as you are able to offer. If you think you might be able to help in any way please go to our website, www.stotfoldmill.com., call 01462 734541 or mail volunteersupport@stotfoldmill.com

We will continue to consider how and when we might be able to re-open the Mill, taking account of government regulations and guidance, and the safety of our volunteers and visitors. Please keep checking our web site and Facebook pages. Last month we reported that we had been approached by the makers of the television programme Antiques Road Trip with a view to filming a sequence with a classic car in the nature reserve. Unfortunately, they informed us that they had re-planned the route and would not be ACCS coming in to this area. Sadly, a good opportunity missed for them and for us! Whilst reporting on events in the nature reserve, many of you might 20 years experience - Reliable and efficient have seen the photo’s posted on the local Stotfold Facebook showing Fully insured & Uniformed staff the vast array of litter, including broken glass, recently left by a group 01462 629302 / 07970 406926 of picknickers. It seems incomprehensible that anyone can be so 152 Hitchin Road, Stotfold insensitive to the environment of the reserve as to leave such a mess. Our gratitude and thanks to those who finding it cleared it up. The reserve remains open for the enjoyment of all but please take your litter home or deposit in the bin by the gate. If you encounter any groups abusing this community facility please consider reporting it to the police on 101.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

If you have ever walked along the tracks that cross the fields behind Hitchin Road, going towards Etonbury Woods, you will know how rich the fields are in wildlife. Skylarks nest in the scrubland; bats swoop near the bramble patch; there are owls, badgers, rabbits and so much more that make this area a fascinating place to walk. And it's under threat of development. There are currently plans to build 181 houses in consultation on this beautiful piece of nature. The latest Local Plan from CBC declined development on this site, and new houses will put further pressure on the doctors surgery, school places and road traffic. If you'd rather this didn't happen, you can visit the Central Bedfordshire Council Planning pages and object to the plans. Save Stotfold from further development: we don't need more houses! Stotfold Football Club

BRETT DONNELLY CONFIRMED AS NEW FIRST TEAM MANAGER

Stotfold FC are pleased to confirm the appointment of Brett Donnelly as First Team Manager, following the resignation of Luke Gregson due to work and family commitments. Brett will officially take the position after the final post season friendly (opponents tbc) on May 8th. The club were fortunate to receive an impressive number of candidates which serves to demonstrate the potential we and others believe the club has going forward. Having completed interviews we concluded that Brett was the candidate best placed to build on the work done to date Brett is considered by many to be one of the most iconic and prolific goal scorers in local non-league football in a playing career spanning 20 years. A pivotal member of our 2008 team that swept the board winning both the UCL Premier League and Cup, and notably the Beds Senior Cup. He played for a number of local clubs, but specifically at National League Step 3 Biggleswade Town and Hitchin, and it has been at these two clubs that Brett moved into coaching and managerial roles. He became Assistant Manager to Lee Allinson at Biggleswade before taking up the position of Head Coach at Hitchin Town under Mark Burke in 2019. His experience and knowledge of local players will be invaluable.

Joining Brett’s management team as Assistant Managers are UEFA B licence and FA Coach mentor Eddie McLoughlin and Paul Donnelly. Eddie leaves his Asst managers post at Hendon after successful coaching spells with Hertford and Biggleswade Town. Paul is a familiar and popular face at Stotfold. Also a member of the 2008 team, Paul he managed our Development side and worked for several seasons with our Juniors before taking a coaching role at Letchworth GC Eagles where they were denied promotion to the SSML due to ground grading regulations. Brett has also restructured the Development Management team. Jon Little, who already manages the Southern Counties U18 Floodlight side, taking the reins. Another who has a UEFA B licence, Jon’s playing career was curtailed by injury. He turned to coaching where he has been hugely successful, not only through Stotfold Juniors, but at Cambridge United, the Bedfordshire County side and more recently Bedford Schools where he took them to the National final. His number 2 is Sean Lyness who previously teamed up with Paul at LGE and Stotfold Juniors. Jon’s U18 coach Darren Clarke completes the management team. They are tasked to blend experience with raw talent, bridging the gap between youth and senior football hopefully into the first team. Alas a change of management often results in some people leaving for ventures new. Hopefully not too many. SFC would like to thank those doing so for their contribution over their period of stay. We wish you good luck and look forward to seeing you all at some point in the future Phil Pateman SFC Chairman

Our

Memory Walk for Alzheimers& Dementia

Written for the Stotfold News Magazine by Elaine Drury.

At the beginning of March I saw an article on Social Media suggesting that one of the ways to raise money for research into Alzheimers & Dementia was to do a Memory Walk on the 20th March, either in memory of someone known to you who has passed away from this cruel, debilitating illness or someone who is suffering now, which in my case is my husband Richard Drury. I sent off for more details and received the information on the 8th March and, because a lot of technology defeats me, one of my daughters set up the J‘ ust Giving’ page for the Memory Walk for Alzheimer’s on my Face Book page on 10th March -There was no backing down, I was now committed to doing the walk! My plan was to push my husband Richard around Stotfold in his wheelchair, covering as many streets as possible. Ann Paddon a friend from Stotfold Bowls Club who lives in Letchworth said she would love to walk with us. Several others would have done so too but with Covid restrictions that was not possible. We received our first donation on the Just Giving page on the 11th March and by the 20th we had actually received £1,000 before we had even started our walk on that day - Amazing! We received such great support from the local community, Marissa at the OneStop in Regents Street messaged us to say they would set up a ‘moneypot’ in their shop and Regency Flowers donated balloons to tie onto the wheelchair. The balloons were delivered to us on the day with a beautiful bouquet for us too. My friend Sangeeta who runs the Walkwel Clinics in Letchworth and Stevenage donated a waterproof cape for the wheelchair in case of rain and a bag to fit on the Elaine pictured with husband Richard and friend chair for drinks etc. Ann as they completed their memory walk We started the walk at 11am on Saturday 20th March. My three daughters Joanna, Jane and through Stotfold. Sally, Roy and Nora Beale, Lin Gray, and a young man I did not know (I think he was called John, apologies if not) came to see Richard, myself (Elaine), and Ann Paddon as we set off on our Memory Walk for Alzheimers. I had made a rough map to cover as many roads as possible and were out for seven and a half hours in total. We saw so many lovely people on their doorsteps, waving from their windows or passing us on the streets. Along the route our children David and Jane took turns to push their Father as we passed their particular street and daughter Sally bought out a warm blanket to keep Richard warm. As we went down Vaughan Road Musso and Mary Everitt had a cup of tea and a biscuit for us. Musso also then helped to push Richard round a few more streets at a fast pace! On the home straight, Rook Tree Lane, Jane joined us again to push Richard the last few hundred yards, which perhaps was just as well as ten yards from home I tripped up the kerb and landed in a heap. I would like to thank the young man if he is reading this, who stopped his car and came to see if I was alright. We can hardly believe the generosity of the Stotfold people. One lovely lady Audrey insisted on coming to her window with an enormous bag of pennies for our cause even though she was suffering herself with her own pain. Several children also put coins in the pot that Richard clutched on his lap all the way round. It is difficult to tell what Richard thought of his seven and a half hours in the wheelchair as he does not now talk and it is unlikely that he had any idea of what we were doing, but I am sure that deep down the Accountant in him made sure he looked after that money pot! Richard has been going ‘downhill’ with his memory for many, many years, but it was only in early 2016 that it was officially diagnosed. Unfortunately, he also has prostate cancer and osteoarthritis. To watch someone you know who was such an active, intelligent person, diminish mentally and physically is heartbreaking, especially for the family members. Many people know him locally from playing football, hockey, cricket, bowls, badminton, and tennis in the Hitchin, Baldock, Stevenage and Stotfold areas. I would like to thank everyone who donated money and helped us on the day. For those of you who do not use Social Media we raised £2080 on my J‘ ust Giving’ page, we collected actual money on the day either in Richard’s money pot or through envelopes through the door plus 3 cheques totalling £532, and the lovely ladies in OneStop did a raffle and collected £225. I would also like to thank Ann Paddon for her support all the way round. By my reckoning we raised £2837 a fantastic amount! THANK YOU

News from

Roecroft Lower School

Hello everyone and welcome to this month’s news from Roecroft Lower School. What a strange start to our Spring term it was; schools across the country found themselves again only opening for keyworkers and offering remote learning to children who now found themselves at home. There was a huge effort from my team to offer a high standard of teaching for all our children, regardless of them being at home or in school. We are incredibly proud of what we offered, and our families engaged in this new way of learning incredibly well. Thank you to everyone for all their efforts. Having all our children back could not have come soon enough, the children once again mustered all their resilience and strength to make yet another change. I am proud of each and every one of them, they have coped incredibly well. I am hopeful we will have a summer term that resembles a full and complete one. Hoping you are all safe and well, with warmest wishes, Mrs Cross.

Key Stage 2 Update - Year 3 The Year 3 children settled back into life in school beautifully and have really enjoying being back with their friends. They also had some fun-filled days, the first of which was a whole day of science to celebrate British Science Week. They explored magnetism by testing different types of magnets, finding out which materials were magnetic and designed and built their very own magnet mazes. They also had a design and technology day, where they used their knowledge of pneumatic systems to create a moving model! In the first half of the summer term, the children have been learning about Myths and Legends in English. We have also started a new History topic, ‘Mayan Civilisation’. The children have been finding out about the achievements the Maya made, comparing their lives to the Maya and sculpting their very own Mayan masks based on the ones discovered by archaeologists. Year 4 The children returned to school after the Easter break full of excitement for the Summer term. In English, we have been reading the book ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’ and the children have written diary entries and stories based on the book. In Science, we have started exploring teeth and human digestion and in Design and Technology, the children have been building upon their electricity knowledge from last term’s Science topic to design and build a moving car. In Geography, the children have been learning all about maps and have enjoyed using large Ordnance Survey maps of rural regions of the country.

Roecroft Lower School in Stotfold are looking for supportive volunteers to fulfil the role of Community Governors in our team. Community governors help to bring balance and diversity of knowledge to governing bodies. It is a fantastic way to give something back to the community, making a real difference in influencing the standard of education delivered in Stotfold. Governing bodies provide strategic leadership in schools and are accountable for; 1) Ensuring clarity of vision and ethos, 2) Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school/pupils, 3) Overseeing the financial performance of the school. Some of the ways we achieve this includes participating in Governing Body meetings (twice termly), engaging with the school through governor visits, and contributing to sub-committees where you have aligned skills/interests.

We would be delighted to hear from anyone who has: • A desire to contribute to and represent the community • An enquiring mind, with an ability to look at issues objectively/ make informed judgements • The ability to work as part of a team • Expertise, or a genuine interest, in ‘safeguarding’ and/or experience of leadership/line management would be advantageous What we can offer: • Development of skills in strategic management and experience in working at board level • Training to develop an understanding of specific school issues • A sense of achievement in making a difference to our school, its pupils and Stotfold

You will be joining an established Governing Body, supported by fellow governors with many years of combined experience. If you are interested in the role of Community Governor, please contact the Chair of Governors, Joel Parry (governors@roecroft.co.uk) by 28th May 2021. Note: In accordance with our Safer Recruitment policy, all governors must provide two personal references and agree to complete Disclosure and Barring Service checks prior to appointment.

Etonbury Academy

We are delighted to welcome in the Summer Term, we have lots to look forward to, most of all having some normality return with all students in school, extra curricular activities resuming and trips to be planned. We have also returned to celebrate the enormous success of our BTEC Animal Care and Childcare students who achieved fantastic results in their examinations taken in January. This was really no mean feat, having been told just prior to the exams that we were going into lockdown, our student’s stamina and resilience never fails to amaze us, but these results are also a fantastic example of how they have continued to work through the toughest of times. Mrs Isobel Phillips, our Intervention Lead and Second in English, has linked with The National Tutor Programme, to support research and development whilst providing additional support for our children. Mrs Alice WagstaffSherwood, Head of English, has commenced her work with the University of Oxford through The Brilliant Club and Scholars Programme which is benefiting so many of our students in the Secondary School. You can read more about this in our Spring Term newsletter accessed via our website.

Captured at the end of the last term as the school broke up for Easter.

During the Easter break, 36 students embarked on their Duke of Edinburgh Award, learning some valuable life long skills, planning routes, pitching tents, hiking, cooking 3 meals a day and team building.

Improvement works have continued at Etonbury with the refurbishment of our bike sheds, and an additional ICT suite located on the ground floor. Technology is a real strength of our school, and is driven by the excellent staff who embrace it, and want to develop these vital skills in our children. Thank you to Mr Rhys Kirkman, Head of ICT and Computer Science, who has led this development project. Our Student Senior Leadership team have been discussing the school environment, raising awareness of LGBTQ+, Wellbeing and considering the charities they would like the school to support. Last term our students raised £712 for Red Nose Day and LUNA Animal Rescue. The Senior Leadership Team has been welcoming Heads of Departments, Heads of Years and Leads of specific projects to present at their weekly meetings. Listening to their new and innovative ideas for providing additional opportunities for our children is really exciting. Our people really matter, and we are fortunate to have some of the most inspirational and forward thinking students and staff here at Etonbury Academy.

Poppies &Poppyfields Nursery News Poppies and Poppyfields Nurseries and After Hours Club Welcome to our news! Last month, children enjoyed numerous outdoor activities! We explored Spring and growth, with life cycle sequences such as frogs and chicks greatly enjoyed! Children followed this up with frog hunts round our Wild Wood! The outdoors has also provided opportunity to paint outdoor scenery, spring collages with natural materials and beautiful trees for their Memory Journals. We have also looked at our own growth and children have learned how to make themselves healthy snacks and compared heights. They have also compared hair styles and length!! Our nursery is continuing with our ‘Bubble’ groupings to reduce contacts and the groups, Bumblebees and Ladybirds, have been looking at their ‘insect’, their insects role in life and creating associated artwork. This has also created a sense of belonging to their own bubble which provides security and well-being.

Our After School Bubbles are also still in operation to provide as safe an environment as we can at this time. It is really pleasing to see how well children have adapted and settled into this new way of life and they have built strong bonds with their Bubble staff. Many thanks to our families for their continued support and understanding during these difficult times. it really does make a huge difference!

We continue to offer care/education with breakfast clubs, nursery sessions and after school care at both Poppies and Poppyfields. Any enquiries, please contact us on billpoppies@gmail.com or billpoppyfields@gmail.com. Take care and keep safe.

St Mary’s Academy

Our Spring Term was rounded off with much fun celebrating Red Nose Day and a donkey procession within our grounds with Reverend Bill holding our Palm Crosses to celebrate Palm Sunday and Easter. It has been so lovely to have all of the children and a little ‘normality’ back in school. We have Tennis, Gymnastics, Spanish and Multi-Sports Clubs back on offer and all much enjoyed and well subscribed. We have the addition of a new and exciting Dance Club starting in the Summer Term which some of our Year 1s are looking forward to! Since then we have all had a lovely Easter holiday with plenty of chocolate and a little sunshine! Yay! We have also held our first zoom parent consultations and our re-scheduled ever popular Creative Arts week. The children really enjoy this event each year undertaking a range of activities including arts and crafts, dancing, sporting activities and cooking to name but a few! Year 3’s have also learnt how to play the African drums! Please look at our website for photographs and up to date information on life at St Mary’s.

Summer activities are well under way. Our Year 4’s have their last term in school and hopefully a couple of surprise fun events to look forward to! Until our next instalment please stay safe and enjoy the bank holiday weekends!

Fairfield Lower School

Fairfield Park Lower School children have shown their values recently, thinking of those that are currently residing at the Baycroft Care Home over the special time of Easter. To bring cheer to the residents, each class made an Easter card and some even made a small gift to mark this important occasion; staff also showed their appreciation by donating gifts to the staff to say "thank you and well done" for their continued efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. Simple gestures such as this have helped the children learn that they can have a wider impact beyond the school.

The wider re-opening of schools in March filled the classrooms with the laughter and chatter of children that have delightedly returned to school. Events such as the Masked Reader saw children guessing who was reading stories during Book Week and some have even been inspired to develop green fingers in a whole school project "Sow! Grow! Give!". The Eco-Gardening Committee recommended the benefits of gardening to all the children and this has inspired many children to sow a seed, start growing it at home and then bring them into the school so to create outdoor classrooms that can help with everyone's wellbeing. We can't wait for more warmer weather to see the plants and flowers bloom and bring happiness! News from Fairfield Park Lower School Hello from all at Fairfield Park! Nursery Class September 2021– Have you applied for your child’s place? Please collect a Nursery Application Form from the school office or request a copy to be emailed to you. News from

PixBrook Academy

It is a great relief to be back to school after an Easter of lockdown. It feels that we are on the way to a bit of normality, I know for pupils being in school with their friends and having a “normal day” makes all the difference. It is now important for us at PBA to begin to undertake all those activities that would normally have been spread out over the year.

As I look ahead to the next few months its clear that we are all going to be busy. Although the official SATs will not happen this year we will want to give our pupils the opportunity to show what they have learnt over the last two years and undertake some assessments with them. The way in which the work has been undertaken and the commitment shown by pupils (and their parents) needs recognition. We are also planning to provide an opportunity for parents to finally visit the school. It has been one of the great disappointments of this period that our new school with all the fantastic facilities has not been able to be shown to our parents. The hope is that following the relaxation of the lockdown we will be able to do so. The 21st June is looking like a really important day! Over the last month we have worked really hard to try to bring some energy into the school. Our involvement in Mars day meant that pupils were able to hear direct from scientists involved in the exploration of Mars and build their own models of a Mars Rover. Earlier in the week we had a presentation from the Houses of Parliament where pupils were able to ask questions to the guide about the way in which the House operates. Some of our pupils even knew who our local MP was! It has been much more difficult to undertake learning in this way during the last year, our hope is that we will soon be back to normal.

Overall its been an interesting period in the life of the school. I’m pleased to say that throughout this difficult period our pupils have been fantastic. Many of them have been involved in the appointments the school has made in preparation for next September and we will start the process of agreeing the additional class names required very soon. We look forward to having parents in for a face to face parents evening and hopefully we will be able to enjoy a school sports day for the first time in over a year! Finally, it’s important to remind the pupils, (and myself) that we have lived through a period of History that will have a profound effect on the future. The experiences and recollections that the children take with them will be the stuff of History books one day!

Stotfold Art Group News.. Welcome to the next update from Stotfold Art Club.

The City of Paris is a place which has inspired oil paintings from both Geoff Hoile and Carolyn Monaghan. Geoff's night scene includes a couple aking a selfie; the painting is now owned by a lucky buyer. Carolyn's view of the base of the iconic Eiffel Tower uses a holiday photo taken from a tour bus.

Carolyn joined the Art Group in the late 1990s, encouraged by neighbour Geoff, and she now has walls and cupboards full of oil and watercolour paintings. Many of these have been shown at Stotfold Mill. With lock down restrictions easing it is now looking likely that the Art Club will be able to reconvene. For further details on the group please contact 07734 304590.

The group is open to anyone with an interest in art, everybody welcome.

News from Teasel OUT AND ABOUT – WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN MAY

May is peak Springtime, as (hopefully) warmer temperatures allow plants and animals to thrive. In the plant kingdom, common favourites including Cowslips, Celandines, Buttercups and Daisies should still be going strong. If you are quick there should still be time to see some glorious displays of Bluebells – Campton Plantation (near the CBC offices at Chicksands), or Moggerhanger Park and RSPB Sandy if they are open (check web sites). Centenary Wood (off Malthouse Lane, Stotfold) has a nice display – although sadly they are the Spanish rather than native British variety. Nettles and Cow Parsley will be growing anywhere they get a chance. Often seen as weeds, yet they provide invaluable habitat and food source for a wide range of insects. The frothy white umbrella-like flower clusters of Cow Parsley are a perfect nectar source for smaller insects. Along the roadside verges, the wonderful displays of Cowslips along the A507 will be joined by others including Oxeye Daisies. Insects in particular appreciate the extra warmth from the sun. Butterflies including Brimstone, Comma, Peacock and Red Admiral are joined by Large and Small Whites, Orange Tips, and Speckled Woods. On the warmest days the early Dragonflies and Damselflies may also be seen darting and hovering. – Bees will be out and about, taking advantage of the nectar provided by all the new blossom. Keep an eye out for tadpoles in ponds – but it will be a while yet (July) before they start looking like proper frogs. The first clutch of ducklings should be hatching out, followed later in the month by cygnets (baby swans). Remember at this time of year it is even more important to keep dogs on leads in nature reserves . Also remember that feeding them bread is like junk food – too much is not good for them. Talking of birds – if you have a garden you may notice lots of activity with birds busy collecting worms and insects to feed their newly hatched young. Head down to Etonbury Wood and you may hear Chiffchaffs, Blackcaps and White Throats singing out. One bird we haven’t heard for a while now is the Cuckoo, which has declined in numbers in recent times. These birds make a heroic 50+ hour migratory flight over the Sahara dessert each year, for which they need to build up food reserves. Enjoy getting out and about this Spring – but remember the Country Code (there is a new version just out - check web!) Teasel Group - Stotfold.

News from Stotfold

Methodist Church

May 23rd this year is Pentecost Sunday. Christians sometimes call it “the birthday of the church” because it remembers the day that Jesus’ followers received God’s Holy Spirit. It was a dramatic event. Crowds gathered. St Peter preached his first sermon, speaking about Jesus, his execution on a cross, his burial and his resurrection to life. “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation”, cried Peter. Many people became believers and were baptised. This was the beginning of the movement that we call the church. And it remains a significant time for believers - a hope of receiving new blessings from God, new strength or courage, new healing or experience of God’s presence. For some, it is a time where God’s love became fully real for the first time in their lives. I’ve been reading “Charles Wesley, as revealed by his letters”, by Frank Baker. On Pentecost Sunday 1738, Charles wrote “I now found myself at peace with God, and rejoiced in hope of loving Christ...”.

Charles wrote a hymn two days later, which Methodists refer to as The Wesley’s Conversion Hymn, called “Where shall my wondering soul begin?”. The second verse is a prayer : O how shall I the goodness tell, Father, which thou to me hast showed? That I, a child of wrath and hell, Established 2010 I should be called a child of God! Fully insured & DBS checked Should know, should feel my sins forgiven, Loving care guaranteed! blest with this antepast of heaven! Writing in the language of his day, I think Charles managed to express that wonder of finding sure faith in the living God, in God’s love shown in Jesus. In uncertain days, Call Liz: 07894 561765 may God help us find sure faith to help us. www.smileypets.co.uk Revd. Graham 07340 857386 Graham.Claydon-Knights@methodist.org.uk

Appeal To Support

Stotfold Businesses

Dear Stotfold resident,

As the high streets and towns across Central Bedfordshire start to reopen, I’m urging all residents to ‘shop local’ wherever possible. The lockdown has had a massive impact on the local economy. We now need to help local businesses to get back on their feet.

During the lockdown many of us turned to local providers who stepped into the breach to prevent shortages and to provide home deliveries. Many of them quickly adapted to providing an online or take-away service. This has given us a new insight into local businesses and how they can innovate to support us. I think the lockdown has helped us to not take local business for granted. They have had to work against the odds to support and keep our community safe. Now, we need to show them that we will nurture them as they try to rebuild. I encourage everyone, wherever possible, to spend their hard-earned money with local businesses, whether that’s for food, items for the home or a much-needed and missed service such as having your hair cut. Without that support our independent local businesses may not come through this and that would be a bad thing for all of us, for our local economy and our jobs. Whether you are visiting a local beautician or shopping, there is absolutely no room for complacency. Every one of us must continue to play our part by taking personal responsibility to follow the new golden rules: Hands. Face. Space. Fresh Air, keeping up good habits such as washing your hands regularly, wearing a face covering and giving others space are even more important as we move into this next phase. The next few weeks will be critical in setting the direction of the ‘new normal’ and we can all play our part. It will be tough, but with vaccines offering a light at the end of the tunnel, we all need to continue doing the right thing for a while longer. We owe it to ourselves and to the NHS to keep going. Whatever your plans for enjoying the easing of lockdown, please shop local and stay safe. Yours sincerely,

Councillor Richard Wenham Leader Central Bedfordshire Council

Pentecost? - What’s it all about.....

Christmas and Easter are fairly straightforward. The church celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas and remembers his death and resurrection at Easter. Years ago we used to have 'Whitsunday' with a traditional holiday called Whit Week. Historically, servants were given three days off a year in connection with the church holy-days of Christmas, Easter and Pentecost. Whitsunday falls fifty days after Easter and was a national holiday until, starting in 1972, the Spring Bank Holiday was fixed as the last Monday in May. For the church, the story of Pentecost has an older understanding. Easter and the Jewish festival of Passover are often celebrated around the same time. Christians remember the death and resurrection of Jesus as happening at the time of Passover. (John's gospel 13 verse 1). Christians believe that Jesus is our Passover Lamb, sacrificed once and for all. The original Pentecost celebration happened after Moses gathered the Israelites at the foot of Mt Sinai. Fifty days previously they had escaped Egypt and over four hundred years of slavery. then you will know all about this!

At Sinai, God gives Moses the Ten Commandments and establishes this group of refugees as a nation. Fifty days after the resurrection of Jesus the Holy Spirit is given to his followers and they are filled with a new boldness. The followers of Jesus were brought together for the first time as a church with the arrival of the Holy Spirit to all believers just as Peter preached! Pentecost truly is a time when Christians can celebrate the birth-day of the Church!

The Barn Hair Studio

How The Pandemic Has Allowed Us To Focus On What’s Really Important

Julie Hyde has been a hairdresser for over 30 years, and in all that time has managed to maintain her business throughout various recession’s, illnesses, staff problems and much more. It’s fair to say however that nothing could have prepared her, or any other business in a similar industry for the effect the present pandemic was really going to have. Julie told the Stotfold News Magazine ‘I really don’t think anyone was prepared for the past year, so I’m grateful to now be coming out the other side in one piece.’ ‘These past few months have given me the space to sit back and review my business,’ ‘I think everyone has a different outlook now, and now understands what is really important to them.’

The Barn Hair Studio began it’s journey in just two rooms in the upstairs of Julie’s barn, with just Julie, Linda and their trainee Angela. Today The Barn The Barn’s Linda busy fitting in clients ready for the re-opening. has 14 people working from it with Linda still working alongside Julie. Julie added ‘Covid has given me time to re-think and plan more for the future, the Barn is becoming more sustainable, both in the way we work, and with the products we use.’ ‘I have had time to finish the re-brand which was started in the first lock down, bringing the barbers more into the Barn family.’ ‘I’ve added a new website and also have a new online shop.’ ‘The Barn is such a busy place as we now have the hair studio, barbers, chiropractor and two beauty therapists, a wedding specialist and hair extension specialist.’ ‘On reflection without this time to pause, I don’t think I could have re-focused and moved forward in my business.’

All the team at the Barn are looking forward to welcoming clients back in to their surroundings and are hoping that this will be the last time they are required to ‘press pause’ and wait for restrictions to allow for them to continue doing the work that they do.

Julie tells us all about the Barn’s journey for substainability... “During the time we were closed in the third lock down I decided to look into different ways of recycling our salon waste and changing our products. Being more sustainable was the end goal so I set about researching companies and information that could help. I found most of our products had some form of environmentally aspect, but how to dispose of all our waste was a problem. Until I came across ‘Green The salon looking ready to welcome clients salon collectives’ a company with an amazing ethos and perfect for what we were looking to achieve. Here is what they say. ‘Our recycling system, recycles almost every single piece of "rubbish" and turn it into something new. We recycle and recover hair, used foils, empty colour tubes, chemicals, PPE, plastic & Paper. We also sell 100% plastic-free plant-based gloves and the worlds only recyclable face masks.” ‘100% of any money raised from recycling all raw materials or new products made from the salon waste goes to charity. By recycling profits, every month we can support charities and organisations that are close to our hearts. These currently include the following: Food-cycle - Haircuts 4 The Homeless - Tree Planting.’ Julie went to say ‘I’m so glad to say we are now part of the Green Salon Collectives team and look forward to adapting our working ethos as of May 2021 to be more environmental.’ ‘This is just the start of the process and as I learn more, we will increase our commitment one step at a time.’ ‘It’s a work in progress.’

The Barn Studio were delighted to re-open their doors as of 12th April and have thoroughly enjoyed seeing all of their existing clients and welcoming new faces in to the salon. Email: stotfold.news@yahoo.co.uk

Bowls Club

ATTENTION CLUB MEMBERS

Good News! In line with the Government guidelines and Bowls England we are looking to open the Bowling Green on April 24th/25th. We are waiting for Bowls England to publish guidelines as to what measures we have to put in place to conform with Covid restrictions. The club is also hoping to join Bowls England and hold a Big Bowls Weekend on 29/30/31 May. More details nearer the date.

The committee would stress that should the government ‘roadmap’ change then we would have to take the appropriate action to keep our members and public safe. Hopefully this won’t happen and we can get back to a ‘normal’ season. We would like to thank everyone for their patience during this time.

From the Stotfold Bowls Club Committee.

To find out more about becoming a member of the club the call Mollie on 01462 628204 or Frank on 01462 732990.

If all goes to plan and you see us bowling, pop in and have a chat You will be most welcome.
