From the Editor Welcome to November!
We have really been spoiled these last few weeks, a late summer was promised and that was exactly what was delivered. We hope you have enjoyed the extra sunny days and managed to make the most of the warmer, lighter evenings. Don’t forget, clocks go forward on Sunday October 29th. Inside the November issue we have lots of articles for you to enjoy, including an update from your local CBC Councillor Jodie Chillery. If you happen to be reading this before Saturday 28th October then you have the opportunity to meet other representatives from Central Beds Council at the Fun day planned for Goodwin Drive between 11am-4pm, more details on page 5 and on the advert on the facing page. Thank you Kelli Turner for loaning us the magnificent poppy picture we have used as our front cover for November. Arlesey’s Service of Remebrance will be held on Sunday 12th November - details on page 5. We’d like to take this opportunity to reach out to anyone looking to help us to deliver our magazines, especially along Hitchin Road, Ramerick Gardens or The Rally/Carters Way. We have a few rounds available, (they make great volunteering positions for students participating in the Duke Of Edinburgh scheme!) All that’s left to say is we hope you have a wonderful November - we look forward to bringing you a special festive issue! (how did we get here already!!) Until next time..
Joanne.

Back in July Arlesey almost went back in time for a bit as 18 Traditional Scouts hiked through the village whilst camping at Henlow. In truth we are a troop of Traditional Scouts from Dullingham near Newmarket. Our connection with the area is through our Group Scout Master, Mark, who was born in Albert Road grew up in St Peters Avenue. Mark was a Cub with 1st Arlesey Sioux Pack back in the late 1970's, before moving away in 1990. More info on our group can be found at: https://www.traditionalscouting.co.uk/

Update from Cllr Jodie Chillery As ever, its been a busy time, I’ve been learning a lot about Highways, and October’s full council meeting saw a couple of really positive decisions approved. I apologise if you’ve been trying to call me, there have been some telephony issues with my CBC phone line. But you can also try emailing (Jodie.chillery@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk) and plenty of you have! HIGHWAYS The deterioration of Stotfold Road, Arlesey has been inspected in October and although its not in great condition, it isn’t considered a safety critical defect and therefore no urgent work is required. However, it is on the regular safety inspection list and therefore is actively monitored and will be considered for a complete re-surface. Any resurfacing will be future scheduled works rather than emergency work, so its not going to happen immediately but I’ll keep you posted.
CRIME At the October Full Council Meeting it was agreed to set up a new Police and Crime Panel. This will be a councillor committee which will give the public an opportunity to communicate related concerns. While the responsibility of crime control sits squarely with the Police, there is more that councillors can do to highlight the issues we face locally and better represent residents concerns. Personally I’ve been working closely with the CBC community safety team to report anti social behaviour, knock on doors with them, and I took the opportunity to engage with the Police Inspector when he visited the town council earlier in the summer. This has contributed to some positive results for the police in our area. However, we could be doing more. The new Police & Crime panel will be able to request attendance by the PCC and the Chief Constable of Beds Police and make recommendations to them. It will allow councillors and residents a public opportunity to discuss areas of significant concern. I really welcome the addition of this committee and thank those who made it happen. I will post more information about this panel when it is up and running.SEND
6
The other really positive and much, much needed decision was to set up a separate and dedicated panel to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) issues. Many residents have contacted me with their experiences and frustrations at dealing with the council on SEND issues, and while I'm no expert in the area, I can certainly empathise with those residents who I know have had on-going battles. A lot of very positive work (cross party and with CBC officers on the front line) has gone in to creating a new committee which will give special focus to the subject. Until now all SEND items were discussed within the existing Children’s Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee and this has sometimes meant that discussion had to be cut short or not explored in sufficient detail to make any progress. Anyone affected by SEND issues will know they are often complex and every single one is unique, so a subcommittee is a huge step in the right direction in improving services and taking these issues seriously. More info on this to come but I hope that parents/carers will attend in person or virtually to ask questions or give statements. There will be seven Councillors on the committee – and people can be co-opted onto the Committee – this could be the SNAP (the Parent Carer forum) representatives, school governors or healthcare partners for example. Jodie Chillery.

Your LETTERS Dear Editor, Through the Arlesey News Magazine I would like to say a huge thank you to John Savory who sorted out the huge weeds / thistles that were growing across the path down the cul de sac part of Hillary Rise. I had put in three reports with photo’s to Central Beds Council, to which all three were returned to me to say that an inspector had been out to see the path and had reported that there were infact no thistles or weeds! Case closed! I tried to pull them up myself but came out in a rash -We can now walk down the path again thanks to John Savory . THANK YOU JOHN - Mrs L Boyden-Senior. Dear Editor, I would like to thank everyone who attended our coffee morning on Saturday 30th September for the Macmillan Cancer Support. During the morning 35 friends, relations, neighbours and acquaintances drank tea and coffee, sampled a variety of homemade cakes and chatted in our garden. Thanks to their generosity and donations from those who could not attend, we raised £425 for this very worthy cause. Bev Harrold

News from Gothic Mede Academy
It has been a busy start to the new academic year for us here at Gothic Mede. A group of Year 4 children had a wonderful morning learning how to play golf. They learnt lots of new skills and they showed fantastic determination with each challenge. They managed to come second out of all the teams and should be very proud of themselves.
There has been lots of artwork going on around the school. Year 4 have completed an art unit on Pop Art. They discussed the characteristics of a Pop Art picture, what makes Pop Art stick out and how colour is used in this type of art. They then created their own pieces of Pop Art! Year 3 have also started an art unit and are exploring the work of the abstract artist Kandinsky and creating their own paintings inspired by his.
On Friday 6th October, we had our Harvest assembly where the children beautifully sang ‘Cauliflowers Fluffy’ and ‘Oats and Beans and Barley Grow’. The children also brought in donations of food and we were able to pass on an amazing 42 bags of food elelelelelelelelelelelelelel re to the Need Project who provide food packages to families elelelelelelelelelelelelelel re and individuals who are elelelelelelelelelelelelelel re experiencing food deprivation. Etonbury Academy It's been a busy and successful autumn term here at Etonbury Academy. Our learning has been rich and varied, filled with many opportunities for all students. Last month we held our open Evening for prospective parents. It was a hugely successful evening, attended by over 800 people in total. Every department had a fantastic display or interactive activity for our visitors to take part in. The students were responsible for guiding them round the Junior and Secondary School as always, they were impressive representatives of Etonbury and were so articulate and expressive as they communicated with many different families. This month we open our doors and welcome visitors to our Sixth Form Open Evening. Giving the opportunity to tour our facilities and meet our head of Sixth Form as well as discuss A Levels and BTEC options with our specialist teachers.
Preparations for more trips are also in full swing, with Juniors rehearsing for their Young Voices trip and the final arrangements are being put in place for more residential trips too. Our year 5 students have their residential to Grosvenor Hall this month, there are lots of exciting activities planned to entertain the children and we hope they have a superb time and create many lasting memories. Our GCSE Geography students visited the land of ice and fire - Iceland last month. Iceland offers a true insight into the extremes of nature and Geography and our students got to experience some of the world’s most amazing natural wonders. We are delighted to be maintaining above national average attendance and our children are performing incredibly well. Our school goes from strength to strength and we are very grateful for our parents and carers who engage and support us by working together which really makes such a difference to our children's futures. Next month our festive celebrations will be well underway trees and Christmas lights will go up and we start to plan for our Christmas dinner and other in school festivities.
If you would like to find out more or book a personal tour, please do get in touch with us on 01462 730391 or via email eta-office@bestacademies.org.uk to book. School tours for prospective parents provide a real sense of what we offer here at Etonbury. We believe we are a small, compassionate and exceptional educational community. Our children are happy and achieve their full potential, come and see for yourself what makes Etonbury special.

The first half term at PBA is complete and it has been a whirlwind of activity. Having welcomed our new pupils into the school it was amazing to see how quickly they settled and immediately felt part of the school. Schools are amazing places. STOTFOLD FOOTBALL CLUB

I think we all know this but on occasion I have to remind myself that the breadth and depth of activities and conversations at schools is remarkable. I guess this should come as no surprise, young people are full of ideas, questions, suggestions, comments and occasionally bizarre thoughts, but that is what makes schools so vibrant. As teachers our job is to try to manage this enthusiasm, give it an opportunity to flourish while ensuring it does not take over. Not always an easy task.
In the last couple of weeks we have undertaken our parent evenings for year 5 ADMISSION - ADULT £7:50 CHILD £3.50 and year 7 pupils in addition to our information evening for year 8 pupils. The purpose of this was to provide some information about the school’s Tickets will be available for booking ONLINE or from the bar, preparation for key stage 4. These plans are well developed and the evening www.ticketsource.co.uk/stotfoldfc hopefully provided some indication of the direction of travel for the school. It is no tickets available on the gate. Please see Website, Social media or Posters for Updates important to remember that while the school has yet to have its first set of FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY!! On Thursday 2nd November we look forward to our Open evening. The school will be able to have parents/carers and children into school to show the facilities and work of the children. We will also be offering parents and carers an opportunity to tour the school during the school day in the two weeks following the open evening. With the multitude of activities coming our way it is really important to remember “the main thing is the main thing”! The education of our pupils, the focus on teaching and learning and the constant desire to enable pupils to make progress and achieve their potential is our purpose. This is a full-time job and while it can occasionally not feel like it, I remind all our staff regularly not to lose sight of this imperative. It’s another busy month but all the better for that. Next time I write we will be talking about Christmas!

Update from the
Need Project
Our latest facts & figures..
www.theneedproject.org
•785 parcels provided. •357 top-up-bags collected from our Pop-up sites •£54,595 - the estimated value of the food for the month of September. •£6,602.50 - the average monthly cost to run the charity (Rent, Insurance, Fuel, Van, Staff related expenses) •12 - the increase in food parcels delivered this month. •1,661 - the amount oi adults we have managed to nake a difference to this month with your help. We have managed to • 148 - the amount od pensioners we have helped. • 1,467 - the number of children we have managed to help this month (figures above include our best before food.)
Another month gone by - Well, what can I say, sadly, I think this was our biggest month since the start of the project, some 18 years ago. Over 750 family food parcels were distributed and hundreds of top up bags at our drop ins. Where is it going to end? We don’t know and as month on month it’s getting busier, it’s a big concern. But we are so very grateful for the amazing support, through finance, prayer and kindness shown to us as we carry out the work of feeding our neighbours who are struggling in these difficult times.
I’ve said before that I wish we were not needed and we did something else, but the ministry of the Need Project is to feed hungry people, of whatever colour, creed, gender, faith or non-faith. If you are genuinely struggling and hungry, we will help via the 65 odd agencies who will willingly refer to our Project.
Our building plans are going slowly, but steadily moving and if God wants us to have the building, we believe we should have, He will deal with it.
As always, we are grateful for your support and we have had several wonderful gifts of money and I pray that God will bless all those who have gifted to the ongoing work of the Need Project. Please see our current report on our website at https://theneedproject.org/reports/.
In closing thank you so much to all the volunteers who give some 1,000 hours a month at least to the Project. Without you, we would not be able to function. Thank you to our staff to for going above and beyond. A special thanks to Jean who is moving on, we wish her well in her new ventures. The future for us is exciting and also scary, but if we stay focused on our mission to our neighbour with love and kindness, then I know it will be ok.

Shifting seasons
No matter how many times I see the seasons shift they never fail to inspire me with their beauty or encourage me with their wisdom. I prefer the longer days of spring to the shorter days of winter, but every season offers its own reward. As we leave the stunning array of autumnal colours behind, the stripped back silhouettes of the winter trees emerge in all their naked glory. It is neither new nor original but remains true that to enter a new season we must first relinquish our grip on the old. When I feel afraid to let go of the old and familiar, nature reminds me that letting go and trusting in what is to come is a pre-requisite for the new and unknown. The world around me displays this natural order of life whether I am watching the trees shed their leaves, to allow a winter of rest and regeneration or watching my house plants await my help to remove their old leaves so they can focus their resources on making new ones. Even my wardrobe recently reminded me that I needed to move the summer clothes to make space for the winter ones. Wherever I look, I see the need to move or let go of one thing to make a space for a new thing. This is as true for us humans as it is for nature. To remain alive is to grow, change, navigate endings and beginnings and the transitions between them whilst continuing to say ‘no’ to one thing to say ‘yes’ to another. While some seasons are more enjoyable than others, all have their place, time and purpose. Our ability to engage with these seasonal changes, endings and beginnings determines whether we grow, heal or retain our vitality. You can read more from Jo on her blog at joloach.com.

Mum with 3 - does DID Ironman! Swim, Bike, Run and Done…
And just like that the race is over and I’m very pleased to be able to write that ‘I am an Ironman’! 13hours, 10mins and 59seconds it took for me to swim 2.4miles, bike 114miles (yes, they added an extra 2 miles!) and run 26.2 miles.
The days leading up to the race all went to plan; we arrived in hot and sunny Calella, registered, practised our swim and cycle, spent far too much on Ironman merchandise, and set up our bikes and kit ready for the big day. The morning of the race arrived and after a buffet breakfast, a liberal application of Vaseline in all the necessary places and a successful find of a port-a-loo without a queue, I gathered on the beach with the other 2500 athletes ready to start the race. As I ran into the sea, I concentrated on dodging the flailing arms and legs around me and tried not to think of the distance ahead (or the jellyfish). An hour and a half later after fighting the current to minimise the swim between the buoys, I stumbled back onto the beach and into my first transition.
With the sea breeze and speed on the bike it was easy to forget the 30degree temperature, but this could not be said for the transition into the marathon run. Hours passed and day turned to night as I endured mile after mile, focusing on each step to try to avoid the reality that my body was tiring fast. Finally I was into my last mile, past the cheering crowds and down the red carpet to the finish line. The last 8 months have been an amazing experience culminating in one brilliant day. Thank you for all your support. It’s not always been easy, and I never ever intended to do this again. But there’s the small matter of an age group qualifying place in the World Ironman Championships next year in France; now there’s an opportunity you can’t refuse… Mum with 3 is an Ironman
Wet suit off, helmet on and out on to the 3-lap bike course. The first lap was fast for me; the mix of adrenaline, the other cyclists, and the smooth, flat roads pushing me through the miles. I soon settled into a more suitable pace and concentrated on the ride in hand, taking on board nutrition and fluids and using every single water station to pour bottles of ‘agua’ over myself.

Arlesey Town Girls teams: During the Summer break in the football season, I approached Arlesey Town about potentially coming in and trying to grow a girls side to the club. We were welcomed with open arms and already have a flourishing girls section of the club with big visions for the future.
Starting this season we have got Under 8, Under 11 and Under 13 girls teams at the club. All 3 teams have started their seasons and they are all absolutely loving it already, it is brilliant to see so many young girls enjoying playing football The newly formed U’13 girls team ready for the season ahead. and new friendships flourishing throughout the age groups.
CAN YOU HELP US?
We are keen to find a couple of extra delivery volunteers to help us with our deliveries in The Rally, Jubilee Crescent and Ramerick Gardens. If you have half an hour once a month to spare then we want to hear The U’11 and U’8 Girls enjoying training and matches now on a regular basis. from you! Across the three teams we have got 36 girls playing football and having fun getting Volunteering with us is a great way to help keep Arlesey connected out and being active. This has been achieved in the space of a few months and I am so excited to see how much the female game will grow at the club over the (and is also a great way to volunteer coming years. I am a massive advocate for female football, both for young girls to for the Duke Of Edinburgh scheme!) get into playing but also encouraging more females to take up coaching and refereeing roles.
