From the Editor Welcome to November!

It’s been a busy month that’s for sure! As we write this, we have just returned from yet another enjoyable Stotfold Working Steam event. It was great that the sunshine also chose to join us this year - what an added bonus! Thank you to everyone involved in planing and organising this weekend once again. Congratulations to Nerys Martin who sent us in the stunning photograph we chose as our front cover for November- winning herself an Amazon voucher! Our November issue has literally been put together with a shoe-horn as we had so much to include. Thank you to everyone that has submitted news, articles, photographs and events this month, you all continue to help compile the very best magazine possible for Stotfold, and for that we are very grateful. As usual at this time of year we have lots of events coming up, including the Christmas Light Switch on (November 25th) which you may have heard has moved to a new location - find out more on pages 7 and 27 of this month’s edition. We hope to see lots of you there supporting this event. We’d like to offer our congratulations to our very own ‘Mum with 3’ for her amazing effort with her recent Ironman competition in Barcelona. Find out how she got on by reading this month’s column on page 24. All that’s left is for us to wish you all a wonderful November - we love getting into the festive spirit! Until next month.... Joanne

The Art Group will be overwintering in St Mary's church hall - our regular Thursday meetings will be there while the Roecroft Centre is closed for extensive renovation work. Sadly we will be unable to hold our usual exhibition in December, but look forward to displaying our work in early 2024. For more details on our group contact: 07734 304590 Below: Geoff’s paintings.

Local News MacMillan Coffee Morning Raises A Great Amount for The Stotfold Good Neighbour Group

Amazing how time flies and another MacMillan Coffee Morning is upon us. It has now become an annual event for the Good Neighbour Group who, with the help of the students from the Academy of Central Bedfordshire, run this special event for MacMillan Cancer Support. As usual all those attending were very generous with their donations and as result we raised £340.00. Occasions like this are only possible with lots of support and help from our Clients and Volunteers. Our thanks go to them and also Jo Martin of the Academy and her helpful students who made and served all the cakes, tea and coffee. It was lovely to see so many of our clients enjoying the occasion and meeting up with old friends. Thanks also to St Mary's Church Hall committee for the use of their Hall. Christine Horsley.

Stotfold Mum Campaigns To Register More Potential Stem Cell Donors Following Daughter’s Third Leukaemia Diagnosis

“By registering as a potential stem cell donor, you could be giving someone like my daughter Amelie the second chance at life that they urgently need,” Stotfold mum Sofia Flatt, told the Stotfold News Magazine. She is working with blood cancer charity DKMS to encourage more people to join DKMS’s stem cell register, after her daughter Amelie, 11, was recently diagnosed with leukaemia for a devastating third time. First diagnosed at the age of three, Amelie has experienced this relentless disease for more than half her life. Recently, she faced a second relapse and is now facing leukaemia for the third time. With time running out, a stem cell transplant is Amelie’s best chance at survival. DKMS spokesperson Deborah Hyde, said “Sadly only three in ten UK patients will find a stem cell match within their family. Of those patients seeking a match with an altruistic stranger, four out of 10 are unable to find a match. This means every year thousands of people in the UK rely on a generous stranger registering as a stem cell donor with DKMS to save their life.” Through a recent appeal on the Stotfold Magazine facebook page, over one hundred people from Stotfold placed themselves on the register which was an extraordinary response, and one welcomed wholeheartedly by both DKMS and Amelie’s family and friends. Amelie’s friends and family also recently organised a fantastic raffle to raise funds to support them and have arranged several wonderful experiences for them all to enjoy to help make this time a great deal better for them all. If you would like to look at registering to be a stem cell donor please use the link below to find out more information: www.dkms.org.uk/amelie

World Hairdressing Championship Success for Stotfold Salon Owner

Gemma Miles, owner of award winning salon, Hair by Phillip has achieved an impressive 7th place in the World Hairdressing Championships, held in Paris in September 2023. This isn’t the first time Gemma has entered a competition of this scale, the last time was in Paris in 2019 where Gemma finished in 13th place in her category. In fact, Gemma has racked up a number of impressive accolades over the years. In the 2000 World Hairdressing Championships held in Berlin, Gemma was the highest-placed GB competitor in her category. She was also nominated for Student of the Year at the Pantene Pro-V Awards 2002, crowned British Junior Champion in 1998, named as Britain's Best Bride runner up in 2012, and won the title of Welsh Bridal Champion in 2013.

This year however, Gemma opted to enter a more technical category; the Creative Colour category and has spent many hours during the evenings and weekends practising and perfecting her World Championship look. All that practice certainly paid off with Gemma being placed 7th in her category, which is her best World Championship result so far.

Gemma told the Stotfold News Magazine: “I am incredibly proud of my achievements at the World Championships and as always the standard was exceptionally high. It was such an honour to be representing Great Britain, competing with many talented participants from around the globe! This time around I decided to compete in the Creative Colour Gemma pictured with her model category, which is a more technical category. Additionally, I was lucky enough to have the support of the GOLDWELL education team as well as Phillip, my mentor. With their backing, I was able to develop and evolve my initial idea into the creation I put together for this prestigious event”. Gemma Added “Although I was initially disappointed I didn’t make the top 5, upon reflection, I realise just what’s been achieved. I am absolutely thrilled to be the 7th Best Creative Hair Colourist in the World! I must say a huge thank you to all our wonderful clients, my family and staff for putting up with me these past few months, but most of all for the words of encouragement and congratulations, it means so much” You can find Gemma creating colourful masterpieces at her salon, Hair by Phillip Award Winning Hair on the High Street in Stotfold where she works every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday as well one Saturday per month. Last year, Hair by Phillip celebrated its 50th year in business, having been originally established by Gemma’s father, Phillip Parkin in 1972. If you’ve not paid the salon a visit before, or haven’t been for a while, come and check us out, we’d love see you! Application forms for both charities are available from billsonjean8@gmail.com or from 17 Pix Road, Stotfold Herts SG5 4HY. Dear Editor, I would like to thank everyone who attended our coffee morning on Saturday 30th September for the Macmillan Cancer Support. During the morning 35 friends, relations, neighbours and acquaintances drank tea and coffee, sampled a variety of homemade cakes and chatted in our garden. Thanks to their generosity and donations from those who could not attend, we raised £425 for this very worthy cause. Bev Harrold Dear Editor, I just wanted to make your readers aware of the recent cuts to the Arriva 97 bus service (Arriva no longer uses the term 97A). Our last midweek Arriva bus to Hitchin is now the 18:01; it used to be the 19:01, with buses at 18:06 and 18:31 before that (when they ran). On a Saturday our last 97 bus to Hitchin is now the 16:56; it used to be at 18:56, with the 17:56 before that. There was no prior warning of these cuts, the notice on the buses only stated that the service 97A was being withdrawn. I’d also add that we now have the ridiculous situation whereby there are buses arriving at The Green on Saturdays at approximately 17:55 and 18:55 but they are taken out of service and return to the depot. How it can be more cost effective for Arriva to return them to the depot than to keep them in service is a mystery to me. Who has allowed this to happen and how it equates with the £2 fare cap which was introduced to encourage more use of buses I’ve no idea. I understand Arriva blames lack of use for the service cuts whereas I’d blame any lack of use on the abysmal service they provide. It’s not unusual for consecutive buses or the last bus back from Hitchin to be cancelled. Thankfully, we still have the infrequent but very reliable Centrebus 96 and 96A services. In the meantime I have asked Stagecoach if they could consider a slight detour via Stotfold to their 9A Hitchin to Bedford service. Perhaps your readers could do the same? Mr Barnett.

Poppies & Poppyfields Nursery Autumn is a special time of the year, with beautiful colours and that lovely autumnal smell, with hazy sunshine and cooler nights. The warm snap during September was a late surprise but one which brought many opportunities for play in our wooded areas and gardens! Children loved looking for dewy cobwebs, first thing in the morning, counting birds and squirrels, watching vapour trails in the sky and having fun with water activities!

CLAIRE’S CAT SITTING Stotfold based cat sitting service Now in our 11th year!

Children have also been exploring transport and movement, from recapping travel on recent holidays, to how they travel to nursery/school. This has provided invaluable opportunity for reinforcing road safety, which is even more important with the quietness of electric cars and the ever-increasing traffic on our roads.

We have looked at speed and distance within our activities and compared speeds of animals! Our Giant African Land Snails were sadly not in the running when compared to spiders or squirrels dashing about in our gardens and through the trees!! We would like to take this opportunity to thank all at Stotfold Mill for their October Steam Weekend. This event is provided by volunteers, and for that we say a big thankyou! Many of our families enjoy this community event!

Poppies and Poppyfields both offer breakfast club, nursery sessions, afterschool club, and full day care, from Monday to Friday during the term and additionally offer holiday club. Poppies age range is 2 years old to Reception, while Poppyfields is 2 years old to Year 2. News from St Mary’s COE Academy

November is another busy month at St Mary’s! Following the break, the children return to school on Monday 30th October with a packed half term ahead. The week starts with Diamond Class Assembly on Friday 3rd November and then on Wednesday 8th, Wednesday 15th and Wednesday 22nd Moonstone, Coral and Opal Classes respectively will also present their termly Assemblies to enthral their audiences. Parents are invited to come and watch from 9.00am.

The SMSA will be busy once again organising another Happy Bags Collection and an adult Quiz night at the Conservative Club. This proved very popular last year! Week commencing 13th November offers our Parent/Staff Consultations. Although parents can chat with staff on a daily basis, this enables them to have a dedicated talk about how the children have settled in and the progress they are making. We are happy to be holding these in person again this year. Our Year 2s will be enjoying a trip to see ‘Trolls Band Together’ at the Cinema as part of their English Curriculum on Friday 17th November. What fun! Our Year 3 children will take a trip to Hazard Alley, at the Safety Centre in Milton Keynes on Wednesday 29th November. We will once again support the BBC Children In Need event planned for Friday 17th. We will also be supporting the Royal British Legion through Poppy sales in school. Alongside their education, our children are enjoying the many clubs that we offer. These include Multi-skills, Gymnastics, Tennis, BLAST, Homework, Karate Art, Mindfulness, Choir, Sign Language, Drama, Dance, Lego and much more. Premier Sport continues to come into school to undertake the sports training with the children. Please visit our website for all up to date events and news!

News from Roecroft Lower School

The Year 3 we started the term in English by focusing on non-chronological reports. The children produced reports about their class birds using interesting openers and different sentence types. In Art, our topic has been based on artwork from the Stone Age period, namely the amazing caves in Lascaux, France. The children have enjoyed bringing this period to life through their artwork using paints made from natural materials. In Geography, we started the term by studying the UK. We used atlases to find major rivers and cities in the country, as well as the different seas that surround us. With the weather in September being mostly fine and sunny, we were able to get out onto the school field and playground in PE to work on invasion game skills and the children enjoyed playing different games in the sunshine!

Year 4 have had a brilliant start to their final year at Roecroft. They have been demonstrating our school values beautifully and jumped at the opportunity to take on extra responsibilities around the school by applying for jobs in different committees including Art Council, Science Ambassadors and Eco Warriors. In History, the children have been learning about the Romans focussing on society and the military. They have developed their knowledge of how the ancient empire was formed and maintained and celebrated with a topic day dressing up as Romans.

In Science, they have loved learning about electricity for the first time. They have shown a brilliant understanding of how to stay safe around electricity and made their own circuits, added homemade switches and tested materials to identify conductors. In DT, they have explored mechanisms and designed and produced moving persuasive posters. We loved seeing the children demonstrate their passions and had posters covering a wide range of topics including adopting animals, preserving rainforests, playing sport and even maintaining steam engines. In English, the children have been exploring non-chronological reports and using their historical knowledge of the Romans to create their own fantastic reports targeted at children. If you need to know a gory or weird fact all our Year 4s now have a favourite! Roecroft Lower School, Buttercup Road, Stotfold Herts SG5 4PF Tel: 01462 730336

News from Pix Brook Academy

The first half term at PBA is complete and it has been a whirlwind of activity. Having welcomed our new pupils into the school it was amazing to see how quickly they settled and immediately felt part of the school. Schools are amazing places. I think we all know this but on occasion I have to remind myself that the breadth and depth of activities and conversations at schools is remarkable. I guess this should come as no surprise, young people are full of ideas, questions, suggestions, comments and occasionally bizarre thoughts, but that is what makes schools so vibrant. As teachers our job is to try to manage this enthusiasm, give it an opportunity to flourish while ensuring it does not take over. Not always an easy task.

In the last couple of weeks we have undertaken our parent evenings for year 5 and year 7 pupils in addition to our information evening for year 8 pupils. The purpose of this was to provide some information about the school’s preparation for key stage 4. These plans are well developed and the evening hopefully provided some indication of the direction of travel for the school. It is important to remember that while the school has yet to have its first set of GCSE results the staff who have been appointed are very experienced teachers of their subject and are extremely excited about the prospect of working with PBA’s cohort of KS4 pupils. On Thursday 2nd November we look forward to our Open evening. The school will be able to have parents/carers and children into school to show the facilities and work of the children. We will also be offering parents and carers an opportunity to tour the school during the school day in the two weeks following the open evening.

With the multitude of activities coming our way it is really important to remember “the main thing is the main thing”! The education of our pupils, the focus on teaching and learning and the constant desire to enable pupils to make progress and achieve their potential is our purpose. This is a full-time job and while it can occasionally not feel like it, I remind all our staff regularly not to lose sight of this imperative. It’s another busy month but all the better for that. Next time I write we will be talking about Christmas!

Etonbury Academy It's been a busy and successful autumn term here at Etonbury Academy. Our learning has been rich and varied, filled with many opportunities for all students. Last month we held our open Evening for prospective parents. It was a hugely successful evening, attended by over 800 people in total. Every department had a fantastic display or interactive activity for our visitors to take part in. The students were responsible for guiding them round the Junior and Secondary School as always, they were impressive representatives of Etonbury and were so articulate and expressive as they communicated with many different families. This month we open our doors and welcome visitors to our Sixth Form Open Evening. Giving the opportunity to tour our facilities and meet our head of Sixth Form as well as discuss A Levels and BTEC options with our specialist teachers.

Preparations for more trips are also in full swing, with Juniors rehearsing for their Young Voices trip and the final arrangements are being put in place for more residential trips too. Our year 5 students have their residential to Grosvenor Hall this month, there are lots of exciting activities planned to entertain the children and we hope they have a superb time and create many lasting memories. Our GCSE Geography students visited the land of ice and fire - Iceland last month. Iceland offers a true insight into the extremes of nature and Geography and our students got to experience some of the world’s most amazing natural wonders. We are delighted to be maintaining above national average attendance and our children are performing incredibly well. Our school goes from strength to strength and we are very grateful for our parents and carers who engage and support us by working together which really makes such a difference to our children's futures.

Next month our festive celebrations will be well underway trees and Christmas lights will go up and we start to plan for our Christmas dinner and other in school festivities.

If you would like to find out more or book a personal tour, please do get in touch with us on 01462 730391 or via email eta-office@bestacademies.org.uk to book. School tours for prospective parents provide a real sense of what we offer here at Etonbury. We believe we are a small, compassionate and exceptional educational community. Our children are happy and achieve their full potential, come and see for yourself what makes Etonbury special.

Well, what a weekend that was! If you joined us for our Working Steam Weekend (7th and 8th October) we hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as we did! The two big events at the Mill (the Steam Fair in May and the Working Steam Weekend in October) require months of planning, hours of discussion and miles of walking – a complete circuit of the Showground field is about three quarters of a mile, so it’s fairly easy to walk about 18 miles a day over the show weekend.

Which bit did you enjoy the most? There’s so much to see at the Working Steam Weekend (even I didn’t get to see everything). From a history of tractors (huge thanks to Olivers for celebrating their 200th anniversary at the Show) to vintage cars, to the heavy horses, it’s really hard to pick a “best bit,” but I think it probably has to be the huge steam engines chugging their way slowly around the Showground. They truly are magnificent to watch. So, while the Events team have a few days to recover, the rest of the Mill is still operating. Our final open day of the season was on 22nd October, but we’re also open for the traditional Spooktacular event on 28th October. If you’re able to join us, please do come along. It’s a fun-tastic afternoon for families. Details are on our website.

If you enjoyed the Working Steam Weekend, or the Spooktacular, or have some brilliant ideas for other events at the Mill, please do get in touch. We are always delighted to hear from people who want to help keep the Mill running. Whether your interests are in archives, marketing, admin or education, please get in touch. You can email us: enquiries@stotfoldmill.com or visit our Facebook page or website (www.stotfoldmill.com). Come and join the Mill team of volunteers – if nothing else, it does wonders for your step count!

Need Project

Our latest facts & figures..

www.theneedproject.org

•785 parcels provided. •357 top-up-bags collected from our Pop-up sites •£54,595 - the estimated value of the food for the month of September. •£6,602.50 - the average monthly cost to run the charity (Rent, Insurance, Fuel, Van, Staff related expenses) •12 - the increase in food parcels delivered this month. •1,661 - the amount oi adults we have managed to nake a difference to this month with your help. We have managed to • 148 - the amount od pensioners we have helped. • 1,467 - the number of children we have managed to help this month (figures above include our best before food.) Another month gone by - Well, what can I say, sadly, I think we have had our biggest month since the start of the project, some 18 years ago. Over 750 family food parcels were distributed and hundreds of top up bags at our drop ins. Where is it going to end? We don’t know and as month on month it’s getting busier, it’s a big concern. But we are so very grateful for the amazing support, through finance, prayer and kindness shown to us as we carry out the work of feeding our neighbours who are struggling in these difficult times.

I’ve said before that I wish we were not needed and we did something else, but the ministry of the Need Project is to feed hungry people, of whatever colour, creed, gender, faith or non-faith. If you are genuinely struggling and hungry, we will help via the 65 odd agencies who will willingly refer to our Project.

Our building plans are going slowly, but steadily moving and if God wants us to have the building, we believe we should have, He will deal with it. As always, we are grateful for your support and several wonderful gifts of money and I pray that God will bless all those who have gifted to the ongoing work of the Need Project. Please see our current report on our website at https://theneedproject.org/reports/.

In closing thank you so much to all the volunteers who give some 1,000 hours a month at least to the Project. Without you, we would not be able to function. Thank you to our staff to for going above and beyond. A special thanks to Jean who is moving on, we wish her well in her new ventures. The future for us is exciting and also scary, but if we stay focused on our mission to our neighbour with love and kindness, then I know it will be ok.

If you need to know more or want to look around our centre, please call me to arrange it. Thank you. Gordon

Mum with 3 - does DID Ironman! Swim, Bike, Run and Done…

And just like that the race is over and I’m very pleased to be able to write that ‘I am an Ironman’! 13hours, 10mins and 59seconds it took for me to swim 2.4miles, bike 114miles (yes, they added an extra 2 miles!) and run 26.2 miles.

The days leading up to the race all went to plan; we arrived in hot and sunny Calella, registered, practised our swim and cycle, spent far too much on Ironman merchandise, and set up our bikes and kit ready for the big day. The morning of the race arrived and after a buffet breakfast, a liberal application of Vaseline in all the necessary places and a successful find of a port-a-loo without a queue, I gathered on the beach with the other 2500 athletes ready to start the race.

As I ran into the sea, I concentrated on dodging the flailing arms and legs around me and tried not to think of the distance ahead (or the jellyfish). An hour and a half later after fighting the current to minimise the swim between the buoys, I stumbled back onto the beach and into my first transition. Wet suit off, helmet on and out on to the 3-lap bike course. The first lap was fast for me; the mix of adrenaline, the other cyclists, and the smooth, flat roads pushing me through the miles. I soon settled into a more suitable pace and concentrated on the ride in hand, taking on board nutrition and fluids and using every single water station to pour bottles of ‘agua’ over myself.

With the sea breeze and speed on the bike it was easy to forget the 30degree temperature, but this could not be said for the transition into the marathon run. Hours passed and day turned to night as I endured mile after mile, focusing on each step to try to avoid the reality that my body was tiring fast. Finally I was into my last mile, past the cheering crowds and down the red carpet to the finish line. The last 8 months have been an amazing experience culminating in one brilliant day. Thank you for all your support. It’s not always been easy, and I never ever intended to do this again. But there’s the small matter of an age group qualifying place in the World Ironman Championships next year in France; now there’s an opportunity you can’t refuse… Mum with 3 is an Ironman

Your Foot Health expert advice from Stotfold based

A Winter Guide to Caring for Stotfold’s Aging Feet!

As winter approaches it's time to turn our attention to the health of our feet, especially important for our elderly residents. With the colder months approaching, it's crucial to understand the importance of foot care for senior members of the community, the unique problems they may face, and how we might resolve them. Neglecting foot health can lead to a range of problems, including decreased mobility and an increased risk of falls. Common Foot Issues Among the Elderly, particularly at this time of year.. Arthritis: Stiff and painful joints are a common concern among seniors. Arthritis can affect the feet, making simple tasks like walking or standing uncomfortable. Circulation Problems: Reduced blood circulation can lead to cold feet and a higher risk of frostbite during the winter months. Foot Deformities: Conditions like bunions, hammertoes, and corns become more prevalent with age and can cause discomfort and pain, particularly in cold weather. Dry Skin: Aging skin tends to be drier, which can lead to cracks and sores that are slow to heal. Fungal Infections: Reduced immunity and a lifetime of exposure to fungi can increase the risk of fungal infections. Practical Solutions for Elderly Foot Care

Elevate and Rest: Be sure to elevate your feet after walks and periods of standing to reduce swelling. This simple practice can also help circulation. Check Your Feet Regularly: Self-monitoring is essential. Look for any changes in skin color, texture, or sores. Self-Massage: helps improve circulation and provide relief from achy joints. Foot Exercises: Toe stretches/ ankle rotations can help maintain flexibility and strength in your feet. Footwear Choices: Invest in comfortable, supportive shoes with ample cushioning as well as non-slip soles to prevent falls on icy surfaces. Caring for Dry Skin: Apply a moisturising cream to your feet daily, paying extra attention to the heels and soles. Maintain Proper Foot Hygiene: Keep your toenails trimmed regularly to avoid sharp, thickened and in-growing nails. If you have difficulty reaching your feet, consider asking for assistance from a Foot Health Professional. Custom Orthotics: For arthritis or foot deformities, consider exploring Are you suffering with foot health over-the-counter shoe inserts or orthotic insoles. for additional support. complications or discomfort? The Roecroft Centre. News from

Work begins on refurbishment of the Roecroft Centre The Trustees of the H.O. Roe Charity are delighted to announce that a major refurbishment of the Roecroft Centre began on 9 October. The flat-roof extension which houses the entrance and children’s toilets is being removed, restoring the Victorian school back to its original exterior footprint. The new entrance to the community centre will improve access to people with a disability and will meet current regulations. The hallway will be raised to the same level as the rest of the building to improve mobility within the centre. The refurbishment will include new toilets and will introduce a disabled access toilet. The tiny existing kitchen which is only equipped with a sink, will be expanded and replaced with a full kitchen. The renovations are being funded by the H.O Roe Charity and generous grants from a variety of local and national organisations. The Centre will reopen in the in the New Year. The H.O. Roe Trustees believe that these enhancements will make this much-loved historic building more accessible to all people in our community and fit for the 21st Century. (Revd. Bill Britt, Chair, H. O. Your Health MATTERS Diabetes Awareness Month - NOVEMBER. One in 15 people in the UK have diabetes, including one million people who have type 2, but have not been diagnosed. November celebrates Diabetes Awareness Month with a special focus this year on World Diabetes Day on 14th November 2023, as it marks 100 years since scientists Frederick Banting and John Macleod were awarded the 1923 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in recognition of the discovery of insulin. All types of diabetes cause people to have too much glucose in their blood, although we all need some glucose to give us energy. We get glucose when our bodies break down the carbohydrates which is released into our blood.
