From the Editor
Welcome to October,
We hope you enjoy reading your October issue, we have had such a lot of information to squeeze in yet again, so we hope you find it both informative and useful. There are a couple of features this month which involve fundraising activities in the town, we hope that as many of our readers will help support these events as possible.
We have been contacted by one of our advertisers SJ Brookes Bricklaying & Building Services (you’ll find their advert on page 13 of this month’s issue.) They wish to offer their apologies to anyone that has tried contacting them through their landline during the last few weeks. Their landline has not been allowing them to retrieve messages which may mean that have not returned calls when they may have been expected. There is now a new number alongside a mobile number on their advert should anyone wish to get in touch with them again.
We are looking forward to once again attending the Working Steam weekend on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th October. We enjoy this weekend so much as there is so much to look at and to learn. As always we thank all of our delivery volunteers that continue to offer a fantastic service to our readers by delivering to every home in Stotfold and Fairfield every month. If you have relatives or friends that would be interested in reading the magazine but do not live in Stotfold, then please remind them that the magazine is available online every month and can be accessed through our facebook page. One of our family announcements came from New Zealand this month so we know people are enjoying being able to read the magazine around the world already! Next month will be our November issue - if you wish to include anything in this month’s magazine particularly Christmas related then we will need to have this information by the 6th October.

Stotfold Bowls Club Represent At National Finals Congratulations to Margaret Cahill, June Bentley, Sheila Clayton and Debbie Roe (Skip) pictured right who as finalists in the Ladies County Fours represented Bedfordshire in the National Finals at Leamington Spa during the summer. The last time a team from Stotfold Ladies represented the County in the National Finals was back in the 1970’s, so well done to all!
On a more domestic note our club competitions were ongoing during the summer despite the heat, and our Gala Day on the 8th August was again a big success. 1st Prize was awarded to ‘The Walkers’ with 2nd Prize going to Baldock and third prize to ‘Tri Stars’.

BUTCHERS BLOG At the time of writing this blog, we can look back and reflect upon the enjoyable, long hot summer. It has been wonderful to be out in the great outdoors for so long. Our home BBQ’s have been well and truly put to use this year. Seasonal packs and products proved to be as popular as ever with our customers. Sausages, burgers and ribs especially were in high demand. The unusually high temperatures did set us some challenges at times, especially trying to keep our chilled counters running smoothly, but we managed. Now is the time to turn our attention to the family favourites and as always we have some succulent cuts on our counter for you to enjoy. Plus recipe sheets with ideas for tasty meals. Please be sure to check out our Specials Board outside the shop or indeed look at our Facebook page where you will find our weekly offers. We recently conducted a poll on Facebook, as we have had some interest from customers about a late night opening. We are currently looking at how we can make this work and will keep you updated.
Now that The Stotfold News is online in addition to being delivered in and around Stotfold, we hope that we can reach more people, to let them know that they have a butchers shop locally. We are still seeing customers who have only just discovered us, even after living in Stotfold for some time.
Recently we circulated a post on social media which gave some interesting information about supporting local businesses, of which we are lucky enough to have a wide variety of in our town, many of whom advertise in the Stotfold News. We should all be encouraged to shop locally it would make a real difference. It would be a great shame to lose these services in our community. Until next time.

Garden House Hospice Pamper, Prosecco & Shopping Evening
Stotfold mum Carly Tiplady is hoping for tremendous support as she organises a special pamper evening on Saturday 24th November at the Greenacre Centre, Stotfold to raise funds for the Garden House Hospice. The Hospice supported Carly and her family as they cared for mum Bev before she sadly passed away earlier this summer. ‘My amazing mum spent six weeks in the care of the hospice. My family and I spent 24 hours a day 7 days a week there also. We were all made to feel at home during this time as were our children, and I cannot thank the staff enough for my mums care and I’d love to raise loads of money to say thank you from all of us. We have been to hell and back over the past 9 years but the comfort we felt during those last few weeks is hard to describe. In our darkest days we were still able to smile and that was down to the caring staff at The Garden House Hospice’. Tickets for the evening can be purchased by making a £5 donation on the following link www.justgiving.com/carly-formum. Tickets include a glass of prosecco. There are a wide range of stalls attending, including beauty therapists, hair stylists and many gift and craft stalls. Treatments will be available on the night and will be priced at between £5-£15. There is also a raffle (any donations most gratefully received).
We are sure many of our readers will have known Bev (Cutts) as she lived in Stotfold for many years with husband Allen, also running Rook Tree Cars Taxi’s. If you are able to support this event for Carly and her family we know they will be most grateful. The Stotfold Magazine will be donating a raffle prize in memory of Bev and to thank them for their support of the magazine during the many years they advertised with us. For tickets call: Carly 07894058027 or Jen 07917447245

Roecroft pupil Thomas Hartwell is a very special little boy. Thomas has a catalogue of serious medical conditions which have seen him fight against all odds since before he was even born. The family and friends of Thomas are joining forces to raise funds to enable Thomas to experience some special wishes which include a visit to the Zoo with his friends and a Disney experience brought to him in his home. Due to his illness, Thomas is ineligible to fly and so his mum Lisa, together with a wide network of friends and family hope to make his wishes come alive in other ways. Fundraising events include a ‘Glow Walk’ in Etonbury Woods on Friday 28th September (meet at the Fox & Duck at 5.30pm for 6pm start.) £2 entry with glowsticks available to purchase. News from Larksfield Surgery (on behalf of the Larksfield PPG- Patient Participation Group)
ZERO TOLERANCE Sadly in recent days several members of our reception staff have been verbally abused by patients. The Practice takes it very seriously if a member of staff or one of the doctors or nursing team is treated in an abusive or violent way. All our staff aim to be polite, helpful, and sensitive to all patients’ individual needs. However, aggressive behaviour, be it violent or abusive, will not be tolerated and may result in you being removed from the practice list and, in extreme cases, the Police being contacted.. FLU VACCINE We will shortly be inviting our eligible patients to have their flu jab at the surgery. Eligible patients will receive either a text to their mobile or a letter. As with previous years, we would strongly encourage any eligible patient to have a seasonal flu jab.
NEW STAFF AND LEAVERS Sadly we will be saying farewell to Dr Agnieszka Rzadzinska-Prosser who is leaving us for pastures new at the end of August and Julie Campbell our Practice Nurse who retired from the NHS and Practice Nursing at the beginning of August.
We are delighted to announce that Dr Maulik Shah, and Dr Louise Chin are joining the team as salaried GPs. Dr Shah was our Registrar and started on the 1st August. Dr Chin has worked here as a Locum and joins us from 6th September.

Letters to the Editor Dear Joanne,
This is me, Joan Welch, reading the magazine while enjoying cruising the Yangtze River, China. The Chinese were certainly very interested in it! Dear Joanne,
We have recently returned from a holiday to the beautiful Isle of Seil on the West Coast of Scotland. Brenda's son Darren and his partner Jan have just bought a Bed and Breakfast guest house in a place called Easdale, we packed a copy of Stotfold News and took some photos of us with the magazine and we thought you might like to share it with the readers. Dear Editor,
Many thanks to everybody in the community who contributed in so many ways to the Celebration of Weddings event at St. Mary’s Church last month. We were overwhelmed by the number of people who generously offered to loan mannequins, dresses, photographs and other wedding memorabilia for our display, which spanned over a hundred years of matrimony. Thank you also to all those who came to support the event, it was a privilege and a delight to share your memories. St. Mary’s Social & Fundraising Committee Dear Joanne.
It has brought to our attention that there may be a window cleaning business circulating Stotfold with a very similar name to ours. This business is in no way associated with ACCS (A Complete Cleaning Service), ACCS are fully accredited, insured and have been trading in Stotfold for many, many years. We would hate our customers to be fooled into using somebody perhaps less equipped that may not deliver our usual high standard of service. Please check before they start work that people are who they say they are! Many thanks Rodney - ACCS

TEASEL
OCTOBER BULLETIN Teasel volunteers have been busy over the dry summer.
Tasks have included a good cutting back over-exuberant foliage along the Kingfisher Way path (the other side of the river from the Reserve). Also, one of the Willow Hides has been trimmed and shaped and there was a general tidying up around the footpaths. Mostly it involved using mostly loppers and shears – nothing too demanding - plus some machinery. In addition, during the summer heatwave, Teasel volunteers helped to water the trees at Etonbury Community Orchard (behind the school and sports centre). Over 30 fruit trees have been planted there over the last couple of years - not long enough to get their roots established, and they were vulnerable in the long dry spell. On several occasions, water was hauled up in buckets and watering cans from the nearby Pix Brook and carried back to the trees – I say nearby, but with each trip the buckets got heavier, and the distance seemed to increase! When it was all over, exhausted volunteers treated themselves to liquid refreshment at the nearby Fox and Duck. Here are a coupleof shots of our Teasel volunteers in action. If you wish to find out more about joining Teasel contact us by contacting Teasel Secretary c/o Stotfold Watermill Mill Lane Stotfold Herts SG5 4NU

News from
Stotfold Watermill
IS IT WORTH GETTING STEAMED UP ABOUT?
We sometimes say the strangest things without always being clear what they mean. I bet there are some mothers in Stotfold who got really ‘steamed up’ at times during August when their offspring ‘let off steam’ and only cooled down when schools returned in September.
On the other hand, at Stotfold Mill we are starting to ‘get steamed up’ for a really hot event this coming month when dozens of enthusiasts from all over the country will be making their way here ‘under their own steam’. Our teams of volunteers are ‘picking up steam’ and even the ladies in the tea room are ‘building up a head of steam’ so by the second weekend of the month they will have ‘steam coming out of their ears’. All of which is to say we are ‘getting up steam’ ready for the Working Steam Weekend on Saturday and Sunday 13th & 14th October, from 10.30am to 5.00pm.
With admission remaining at the low price of £6 adults, £5 concessions and £4 children for a whole day out, there should be every reason to come ‘steaming along’ to this fantastic event. On display and in action will be countless numbers of steam-driven machines that revolutionised farming in the Victorian era, demonstrating ploughing, harvesting and threshing as well as many other traction and steam powered engines. If all of this leaves you likely to ‘run out of steam’ there is the opportunity to relax and enjoy a drink in the bar marquee or visit one of the several food outlets on site. This year with a determination to focus on local traders we are pleased to include Cardona, Stotfold’s American Barbecue specialist and Young’s Famous Fish ’n Chips from Maulden, along with Master Crepes cooking pancakes and galettes to order. Around the site will be many of our regular trade stands to visit including our very supportive friends from the Stotfold News Magazine and the Town Council. Meanwhile, there is also the mill to visit where as well as seeing the mill in action grinding flour and milling oats, which are available to buy, you can enjoy the Kingfisher shop and Randall’s Tea Room for the most-delicious tea and cakes. We are once again pleased to welcome Paul from Nana’s Christmas Pudding with his traditional handmade puddings made with Stotfold Mill flour. Possibly too, fresh baked artisan bread from Companions Real Bread, who featured in last month’s report will be on sale.
When the Working Steam Weekend is over we will have one more Sunday afternoon (28th October) when we are open to the public so why not join us then to have the last delicious cream tea of the year. We have achieved so much this year, including work from the Education team who have developed programmes enabling groups of children to learn more about the Mill and the nature reserve, the Archives team who have catalogued many historic mill archive documents; created fascinating displays around the mill and set up Sunday exhibitions and finally Sally Creveul and her helpers who organised Art and Craft Exhibitions and Art Workshops.
For the future, our vision is to encourage wider access and involvement of the community in Stotfold Mill. If you are interested in joining any of our volunteer teams or simply have suggestions for activities to further develop the mill as a community asset please visit our website at www.stotfoldmill.com or come and chat to us at our Volunteers Support / Millers Wheel tent during the Working Steam Weekend.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, I thought you might like to use this poem in your October issue of the Stotfold News Magazine: Raindrops.
After the gentle light rain on a bright autumnal morning, raindrops shine in the hedgerow, tiny little ones on the twiglets, and big ones on the large branches.
Backlit by the sun shining low, they sparkle like a million diamonds, those clinging to scarlet rosehips as lovely as a lady’s pearls. On the grass and barbed wire fences they decorate the cobwebs, showing the spiders’ intricate work.
I think about all the insects that go about their daily work unseen, and the words of a favourite hymn, ‘All things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small’. Patricia Anne Pay
Dear Joanne,
Last December, the Salvation Army held a Christmas concert at the new Greenacre Centre. It was well attended and appreciated by the audience. This year we would like to open the Christmas concert up to different local groups in the town that would like to take part. St Mary’s Academy.
The children have all settled back into the school routine very well and it’s amazing how quickly the summer holidays are forgotten! We are delighted with the improvements to our outside areas from the new artificial grass area and pagoda on the school field to the fantastic new play equipment and sun canopy in the Foundation area playground. This will provide us with extended outdoor teaching areas and allow more year round use. We are hoping for continued mild weather so that we can fully enjoy our outside areas. By the time this item is published, we will have taken part in our school Harvest Festival Celebration - a special assembly performed by all of our children to their grandparents and local senior citizens, as well as our Macmillan Cake Sale, hopefully all were well received. Alongside our daily assemblies Coral, Crystal, Emerald and Diamond Classes will be leading assemblies during the month. Parents and close family members are as always invited to attend and enjoy these. Please check our weekly newsletter for more information. Our New Parents Evening is to be held on Thursday 11th October at 7.00pm. Families of children on our potential admission list are invited to come along for an information evening about starting school in 2019 and what they can look forward to during their time at St Mary’s. Everybody welcome.
Our individual and family photographs will be taken on Wednesday 17th October – ideal gifts for that ‘season’ that will be upon us all too quickly! We should mention that we are well into the new learning mission for the Autumn Term, including 'All About Me' in Reception Classes, ‘Nurturing Nurses' in Key Stage 1 and ‘The Vikings' and ‘The Stone Age’ in Key Stage 2 which will include workshops that should prove to be fun and educational. We are only just back at school from the summer break but October Half Term is from Monday 22nd to Friday 29th October with an INSET training day on Monday 29th.

Fairfield Lower School
A big warm welcome back to all after an amazing early hot summer, it has been lovely to see the term return with a hive of activity and excitement as usual!
PRIMARY SCIENCE QUALITY MARK (PSQM) At the end of the summer term Fairfield Park were awarded the PSQM award which is a Primary Science Quality Mark at Gold level. We are immensely proud of this achievement. The Primary School Quality Mark scheme enables schools to work together to share good practice and is supported by professional development led by local experts. It encourages teacher autonomy and innovation while at the same time offering a clear framework for development in science subject leadership, teaching and learning. Jane Turner, PSQM National Director said: “Gaining a Primary Science Quality Award is a significant achievement for a school. The profile and quality of science teaching and learning in each awarded school is very high. Children are engaging with great science both in and outside the classroom, developing positive attitudes towards science as well as secure science understanding and skills. Science subject leaders, their colleagues, head teachers, children, parents and governors should be very proud.” Our Reception children had a visit from some real life Owls as part of the transition process for the children and they all thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Our Year 3 and 4 children were visited by a Viking (Yr 3) and Roman (Yr 4) theatre workshop in September for their respective WOW days. The children enjoyed dressing up in the clothing relevant to the time.
During the first half of the Autumn term the topics that are being covered by all classes are: Barn Owl, Snowy Owl, Honey Bee Class: All about me Badger, Hedgehog, Turtle Class: Theres no place like home Swan, Robin, Seahorse Class: Eco Gardens Fox & Otter Class: Space Kingfisher & Kestrel Class: World Wars
Parent Consultations take place on Tuesday October 9th and Thursday October 11th. We look forward to welcoming our parents into the school to discuss their children’s progress.

Roecroft Lower School. A huge welcome back to all of our families after what we hope was a glorious Summer for you all. The term has started off well and we were extremely proud of how the children returned back to routine and got stuck into their lessons. We shared a whole school assembly during the first week that explored changes and new beginnings, with them mainly wanting to share their excitement over new shoes and new haircuts. We spoke about it being OK to feel nervous and worried sometimes, change soon becomes something we are used to and something that feels normal every day. They have embraced the changes this term and all our parents should be incredibly proud. I have started to settle into my new role and it has been so nice seeing some of you on the playground in the mornings, please do come and say hello to me if you see me walking around. An update from the Key Stage 2 Team:
The summer holidays seem to have whizzed by, and it’s lovely to have all the Key Stage 2 children back ready and keen to learn. There are lots of exciting events and activities planned for the children this term.
Year 3 started off the term with a Stone Age Day to launch their History topic. They came to school dressed in Stone Age costume and spent the day learning what it would have been like during that time. Year 4 are enjoying the start of their topic on the Ancient Romans. They will be making mosaics and Roman Villas out of recycled materials. As a Key Stage, we will be continuing to promote and embrace our school values. Our Year 4s are currently preparing speeches to deliver in an assembly. This will give them the opportunity to join the School Parliament, eco council as well as take on other areas of responsibility.. Can I take this opportunity to remind you all of the valuable information that can be found on our school website, www.roecroftlower.co.uk and also how easy it is to use our school App, this can be downloaded on any Android or Apple device, just search for Roecroft Lower School. Thank you for you continued support, Mrs Cross. Headteacher

The Academy of Central Bedfordshire The summer finally ended and back to the new term at The Academy. During the holiday’s our animal care department had some new editios. We are delighted to introduce our new pigs and ducks! A big thank you to the two ladies from our local community that helped us feed the animals during the summer break, your help really made a difference and we are very grateful. Help is always needed during the school holiday’s so if anybody fancies helping out please give Mandy McCracken a call (07890 797948)
A further thank you to Avonside of Letchworth who provided our construction department with a donation of tools and consumables for us to start off the new term.
We are extremely grateful to the continued support of the Teasel Conservation Group who have once again gave up their time to clear some of our severely overgrown raised vegetable beds. After the success of last year’s event, we are looking forward to once again hosting the McMillian’s world’s biggest coffee morning alongside the Stotfold Good Neighbour Group on 28th September, thank you to St Mary’s church for allowing us to use the church to host this event. Are you a local business that may consider helping to support The Academy? There are many ways you could help us, maybe provide some work experience for a student, would you consider an apprenticeship? Could you donate some materials for any of our departments, we are always grateful for any help and support if you think you could help please give Mandy McCracken a call (07890 797948) mmccracken@acb.beds.sch.uk
