Dear Editor,
My family have lived in Sto tfold for o ver 25 years and during this time have to pu t up with occasional pollu tion caused f rom residents garden f ires withou t any thought to the effect it was having on their neighbours. Example to the recent August bank holiday It was a lo vely sunny day and my family decided that in the afternoon we would sit ou t in our garden patio and enjo y the sunshine and wildlife Bu t no this was no t to be due to ano ther resident deciding to light a garden f ire and causing heavy smoke pollu tion, the smell contaminating inside our home and general clo thing Also a member o f my family also su ffers f rom Asthma.
The message is quite clear at the moment on TV/Radio abou t poor air quality, the effects o f Fires and car pollu tion that has on Public Health and the effect on the Planet. Consequently, these garden f ires do no t help the situation or promo te harmony in the community Could residents who feel the need to light garden f ires please give some thought to effect you are having on the Community and the Environment.
Thank you - A Sto tfold Family
Dear Editor, Sto tfold Our 1st Year
We arrived in the UK f rom Ukraine in May 2022, no t kno wing anyone in the countr y and with ver y few belongings. My husband is no t allo wed to leave Ukraine and we felt so desperately sad to leave our home and family
I would like to take this oppor tunity to sincerely thank the people o f Sto tfold so much for making us feel so ver y welcome. In par ticular, our lo vely hosts in Baldock Road, Karen and Mark Mendoza who opened their house to us as if we were family Rose and Dave Wrench who have also guided and suppor ted us through the considerable amount or paper work required to settle here
Ian at the ‘Wilde Co ffee Shop’, who gave me my f irst job ( Which has allo wed me to practice my English on the customers !) Jan at the ‘Stag’ Matt at ‘Cockney Rebel’ Barbershop. Gordon and his team at ‘The Need Project’ Etonbur y School where Ar tur was suppor ted so well, he no w speaks better English than I do!
Thank you all so ver y much Ohla and Ar tur.
Editor ’s no te: We are so pleased that our Sto tfold community has made you bo th feel so welcome!
Dear Editor,
I wish to stay anonymous in the magazine. ho wever, I am a resident o f Regent Street and recently contacted Central Bedfordshire Council for a ‘bulky waste collection’ scheduled for Tuesday the 22nd August.
I placed a few items ou tside my home on Friday 18th, consequently, the washing machine was taken f rom ou tside our proper ty at some point on the Monday morning with the remaining items taken on the Monday night/Tuesday morning All items had sat there nicely o ver the weekend
I no w f ind myself ou t o f pocket for a waste collection which we did no t end up requiring - I might add that it is no t a cheap ser vice While I appreciate these items may have been taken by a local ‘rag and bone’ ser vice, a cour tesy knock would have been appreciated to enable me to cancel the collection I had already paid for

Satchells are passionate abou t suppor ting the fu ture o f our community As the area’s longest ser ving Estate Agent, we have seen many changes within our local area and fully appreciate our young people and the pivo tal role they play within our to wns and villages We are most for tunate in Sto tfold and Arlesey to have such a wide network o f local clubs, groups and organisations, ranging f rom you th organisations to gymnastics, dance and more - all o f our clubs depend on suppor t f rom their community which is why we decided to launch the Satchells Young Persons Grant Scheme for 2023.
Earlier in the summer we asked for nominations from local groups, clubs or organisations to be considered for a grant o f £500 to spend on something which was impor tant to them. We are delighted to say that the response was excellentmaking it an incredibly tough job for our judges to decide on one o verall winner
This year the grant was awarded to STO TFOLD JUNIORS DEVELOPMENT CENTRE and we’d like to share with you why

The judges felt that by working together with the Sto tfold Juniors Development Centre, this scheme would give some o f our young children within our community an incredible oppor tunity to par ticipate in an extra curricular activity that would o ther wise be inaccessible to them Due to the success o f this year ’s grant scheme, Satchells look for ward to making this an annual event

As we enter our f ifth year o f operation the school feels ver y different In September o ver 30 new members o f staff joined the school Suppor t staff, cleaners and teachers all joined and this has really added to the vibrancy and energy in the school It also means that the level o f teaching exper tise has increased again so that our preparations for GCSE can continue apace This will continue to be the case throughou t the course o f this year and beyond and we look for ward to working with pupils and parents in upper KS3 to consider GCSE option choices
Of course, it was fantastic to welcome all pupils back and in par ticular our new year 5 pupils 180 new faces really does make a difference We no w have f iveyear groups in the school with 750 young people to work with In my assemblies at the star t o f term I talked abou t the year ahead and the impor tance o f making the most o f the time you have in school It is extraordinar y to be talking to our year nine pupils abou t the fu ture, it really does seem like yesterday that they star ted at PBA

The Final Countdo wn
So with just 3 weeks to go until race day, on what were the ho ttest days o f the year, I completed my longest weekend o f training; a 2 4mile lake swim, a 100mile bike ride follo wed by a 30min run and then ano ther run o f 18miles the follo wing day As nu trition has the po wer to make or break an Ironman race, the weekend was the ideal oppor tunity to practise fuelling the body
There is no doubt that when blood glucose levels are lo w it does no t equal a happy training session, and it was fair to say that I was a tad irritable at times when I wasn’t maintaining my nu trition as required And this wasn’t helped by the actions o f o thers ou t on the road; the majority o f drivers seemed to have zero patience, tr ying to squeeze past my bike at speed rather than waiting for a safer oppor tunity and allo wing more room Running was no t much better people spread 2 abreast across the pavement or looking do wn at their phones whilst their dogs meandered along the path All oblivious to the person running to wards them I was forced onto the road countless times withou t so much as a hallo, let alone an apology or an attempt to mo ve o ver for just a few seconds And don’t get me star ted on the state o f the road sur faces; I’ll admit that there were plenty o f expletives said under my breath throughou t the entire weekend
Bu t it wasn’t all bad and I’ll aim to remember the good par ts especially the lady in Brook Street who asked if I was OK when my hamstring seized up and reduced my running to a hobble I was only a minu te f rom home bu t as she kindly o ffered to get me some water f rom her house nearby, it made ever y thing seem a lo t better. So I’ll take these positives with me to Barcelona, and I’ll tr y no t to swear too much as I complete 2.4miles o f swimming, 112 miles o f cycling 26.2 miles o f running in my attempt to be an Ironman…
Mum with 3 does Ironman Editor ’s no te: Good Luck!! We are thinking o f you!
Update from the Need Project
Our latest facts & fi gures..
www.theneedproject.org
AUGUST FIGURES: * 773 parcels pro vided.* 401 top- up-bags collected from our Pop- up sites * £54,255 (estimated food value) * £6,602.50 cost to run the project * Helping 1789 adults, 37 pensioners and 1,550 children this month alone.
It’s that time again. Ano ther increase in our workload this month. Our parcels were up by 56% compared to the same month last year. It makes sad reading, bu t also makes us realise that what we are doing is so impor tant, just by the reaction f rom those we ser ve.
Nearly 20 years ago, I never imagined we would have gone f rom maybe 4 parcels a month (and that was sometimes hard to give away), to an average o f 745 o ver the last 4 months. That statistic is staggering and so sad for those caught up in food po ver ty and it’s going up ever y month
To be in the 700’s a month was no t something we saw coming We had a shock when Mays f igure o f 705 came in, bu t it has gone up since We need suppor t to carr y on what we do Suppor t with food is impor tant, bu t what makes the most difference is f inance, so we can bu y in bulk and maybe save in the process We are always grateful for any help we get
The premises situation is still simmering along There is no thing to say on that subject, bu t we are still hopeful to secure separate funding to bu y it and then develop it for our needs and also a community space to extend our ministr y to o thers
People o ften ask for us to share stories or situations regarding our clients and ho w they have been helped by us What we do is ver y personal and for that reason we hold back Bu t if you are a person we have helped and you want to share your situation (anonymously if you would prefer)
please email admin@theneedproject.org and we will do so, for no o ther reason bu t to encourage o thers to seek help. The o ther side o f what we do is the drop in top- up shop or the best before items we get f rom supermarkets. The best before food is given away responsibly to anyone. You don’t have to be referred as if you don’t come and take it, it will go to landf ill and that would be a shame. So anyone can come and take items.
Our day with the Sto tfold Walking Market sale on Bank Holiday Monday was a brilliant success We raised o ver £800 00 and met many lo vey people, some who went away with some great bargains

A plea, on behalf o f all coaches, parents and children involved in playing on the f ields around Sto tfold to all dog o wnersPLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, can you clean up after your dogs. Mental Health Matters - with Jo Loach
Take care.
This term is o ften used when par ting f rom someone we care abou t. It was replaced during Co vid with ‘stay safe’ bu t I think ‘ take care’ remains a regular sign o ff for many. Like many o ften- used phrases, we don’t always consider the meaning or application, especially amidst a culture that o ften por trays self-care as self ishness. There appears to be little understanding that a repeated failure to take care o f the self leads to an eventual inability to care for o thers.
A daily commitment to looking after mental and emo tional health could involve journalling, prayer, exercise, a break with a brew, time in nature or simply a quiet moment alone before the day begins. Basically, making space to check what is happening within our internal world before the external world takes our time and attention. Our culture privileges activity o ver inactivity bu t it is our quiet moments o f inner reflection that can prepare and sustain us for ever y thing else.
The invisible nature o f mental and emo tional health mean it is easy to o verlook Yet the external world reminds us constantly that a failure to care for any thing will eventually lead to signs o f neglect or malfunction My house plants regularly remind me o f their watering requirements by drooping when dehydrated While less visible in humans a sustained failure to take care o f our needs will eventually become apparent
It is wor thwhile considering ho w to maintain good daily mental and emo tional health by star ting with one small thing each day It doesn’t have to be elaborate, complicated or expensive It’s whatever involves paying yourself attention by committing to something you enjo y or that makes you feel taken care o f, whether a shor t walk, favourite meal, a bunch o f flo wers, watching a sunset or whatever feels like care to you

CHRISTMAS 2023
Christmas! You may have heard that this year we are looking to relocate the to wn's Christmas tree to a new location in the middle o f the to wn Suitable sites were looked at and working in par tnership with Grand Union Housing, together we have identif ied the area to the f ront o f The Haven as our centre point for this year ’s festivities This year we will be looking to close the High Street on the 25th No vember f rom around 12:00 to bring a pedestrianised celebration for the switch-on event, which will run f rom 4 pm until 7:30 pm with carols and o ther festivities for us all to enjo y
As before, as par t o f the event we shall be hosting a Christmas market, if you have a Christmas stall that you would like to bring , then please get in touch with our o ff ice to book a place as space These stalls will be situated ou tside so it is impor tant that you have a suitable gazebo and equipment to be able to take par t Charity groups and community organisations are also welcome to take par t - you will need to book early to avoid disappointment This year we hope to include local businesses in the plan for the event and will be working with them to deliver something for ever yone to enjo y
To run alongside our celebrations we are holding a Mayor ’s Christmas Card Competition (see the adver t, right) and will also be printing a 2024 Sto tfold Calendar to help raise funds for the Christmas Light Switch On event each year - see the ar ticle on page 7 o f this month’s magazine.
As previously mentioned, this years ‘Switch On’ is a pedestrian only event so we ask that ever yone is respectful o f the residents around the neighbouring roads to the High Street and walk to the event where possible. The car park at Brook Street will be used for stallholders vehicles to use so will no t be available for general parking.
