From the Editor I write this month’s column feeling decidedly less stressed and more serene. The children are finally back to school..no more juggling schoolwork with two teenagers, running a home, looking after a (fairly) young puppy and trying to produce the magazine as well as I possible can over the last few months. I have to say on a personal level, it has been a relief to return to ‘normal’ but today’s news of new restrictions means we need to adhere to a more cautious approach and try to squash the curve which seems to be forming once again. It is extremely pleasing to have news from all of our schools inside this month’s edition. I would very much like to thank all the schools for submitting their news to me within the first couple of days of returning back to not only a new term but to a completely new way of working. You can find out how the first few days of term have gone for all of our schools and what their plans are going forward for the coming weeks ahead.
October
2020
Welcome to our October issue.
We hope you like our front cover, sent to us a few weeks ago by Amy Hyde as part of our photography competition. We think it is stunning - thank you Amy for sending this in to us, we hope it was a nice surprise to see it on the front cover this month! We have a new feature inside this month’s issue which we are very excited about and hope you will enjoy(and contribute to) on a monthly basis. ‘Word on the street’ will feature local residents voicing their opinions on a different topical question each month. This month, we asked readers what they had missed and how they had coped during the last six month’s of lock down. You can find their responses (and see who you recognise) on the first few pages of this month’s issue. If you would be happy to take part in this new item going forward please do get in touch - the bigger the opinion the better! Until next month! Joanne

We took to the pavements this month to ask local residents what they liked, disliked, learned and missed during the previous six rather strange months of 2020. We were particularly interested in finding out how our local residents were feeling right across the board and how some of our local businesses were having to adapt in order to survive.
“
Thank you to all those people that agreed to take part., you are all so kind to be our first volunteers!- you might recognise a few familiar faces here.
If you would consider being featured in a future issue and don’t mind having your voice heard then we would love to hear from you! Simply drop us a line at stotfold.news@yahoo.co.uk or message us through our facebook page.
Heln Backhouse I’m looking forward to continuing some of the things I enjoyed during lockdown that I want to hold on to, and living my life a bit differently. I enjoyed the slower pace of life, the extended time for family, husband working in Stotfold, cycling, gardening, decluttering and supporting friends. I’m looking forward to going back to relative normality but with positive changes as a result of this pandemic such as people valuing life and each other more, talking to each other more, having a stronger sense of community and caring for each other. I’m also looking forward to getting back to King’s Baptist Church eventually and hugging everyone again!
“
Leo Morrison age 5 I have missed getting to see all my friends and play with everyone. I missed them all a lot.!”
Harrison Cooper age 13 I am most looking forward to going back to school and seeing people I haven’t seen in a while from my class and year group.
Also, getting back to the new normal, like seeing how things have changed around the school and seeing teachers and members of staff we haven’t seen in a while! Please mention the Stotfold News Magazine when responding to adverts

With lock down spare time looked to be plentiful. Grain left over at the Stotfold Mill from last year and a new delivery of 3 tons was of a worrying concern. The cancellation of the May Fair meant no income to pay for running costs, but then came an unexpected disappearance of flour in the shops. Ha! says I, a national need that Stotfold Mill can fulfil to help local businesses and outlets continue trading over the next three months. While self-isolating in Stotfold Mill our 5 tons of grain disappeared – all ground, bagged and sold. Another 2 tons were received, ground and sold before flour appeared again in the shops. While other over 70s were out walking I was running up and down ladders in the Mill!
Another hobby which took up time over the past six months was the garden. To achieve a country cottage garden and a splash of colour, time was spent on potting, seeding and preparing the soil ready for planting, window boxes and hanging baskets were done at the beginning of June and then with little or no rain watering became an ongoing evening task. Sprinkled inbetween these two hobbies came other projects like a new roof on one of the garages and the restoration of three model steam engines and a Victorian writing slope

I'm sure, like most people, we are feeling relieved to be easing back into normal life. The small steps being taking to ease lock down have given me and my family a sense of normality. The schools and offices reopening have given us a taste of pre lock down life, which we are loving!”

When we had to close in March I could not have imagined how many things would have to change within my Barn. It’s was like rethinking my whole business again. We were closed for over 14 weeks which was a worrying time but gave me time to think, and organise how we could return safely.
“
We already worked on an appointment only bases but there were still plenty of other things to accommodate. Firstly, there was the social distancing rules to follow, making room for everyone wasn’t too bad as we have rooms so can separate staff and clients safely but reception had to be was moved round and closed to the salon and barber client so Vena our chiropractor and Sarah and Victoria our beauty therapist could use this space safely. I then installed an intercom system on the front door and clients are now met at the door and advised on our new safety rules. The salon seemed a little clinical when I first had to clear it out so I decided to re-decorate with silver feature walls, added some plants and a few posters to soften it. Then for client and staff safety, I invested in PPE visors, masks, gloves were needed and aprons for my staff. A sanitisation station is outside and more placed around the salon we have a deep clean each week and constantly clean during the day.
Harriet White age 15 As a teenager during lock down I have had many issues with not being at school and having restrictions. I found the beginning of lock down extremely stressful as I had been set copious amounts of schoolwork that I found difficult to complete without the support of a teacher. Not having so much freedom and being able to see my friends and family was difficult and lock down became very boring. On the whole, the last six months was a negative experience for many teenagers and certainly not something I wouldnt wish to experience ever again.
We may not be able to provide magazines and drinks at the moment but there is always a smile waiting. It’s been a couple of months now since we returned and I must say things are working out well, the new normal is feeling ok and some of it I quite like, the slower pace is good for staff and clients but unfortunately, we still have to meet the bills so can be worrying.
I have spent 30 years building this business and I’m not going to let this stop me now. It may be challenging and keep me wake some nights but I still love the work and enjoy the buzz that it gives me.
I am lucky to have an amazing team who have embraced the changes with smiles and we are all grateful for our loyal clients as we muddle through this strange time. I’m thankful that everyone is safe and well and I hope this continues, after all Christmas is only a few weeks away. (YES, I SAID THAT WORD)

Revd. Bill Britt, Vicar of St Mary's Church
During the pandemic I think many people have rediscovered the importance of relationships and how we need to work on and nurture them with family, friends, neighbours, and most importantly, our relationship with God. In March the share of Google searches for prayer surged to the highest level ever recorded. Revd. Graham, the curate here at St Mary’s Church, recorded a series on different ways to pray which have been really popular. Going forward, I hope and dare to believe that people will continue to set aside time to pray and be with God each day.”
The thing that has frustrated me the most is the inability to travel. I had a special birthday this year and to mark the milestone I had aimed to have visited 50 countries by the end of April. Unfortunately, Covid stopped me and I missed my goal by 2 countries. No trip to Luxembourg or Gibraltar, stymied by lockdown. In addition to that as a family we had an epic trip driving across Australia planned for August, that went in the bin too. Finally, our holiday home in Scotland was out of bounds until a couple of weeks ago so it's not been a good year for those of us who love to travel. “

The last few months has been a mix of both good and bad for our dance school. We feel so fortunate that our annual showcases went ahead in February and national competitions in March too. We were all on a high and looking forward to competing in Spain when lockdown arrived. We have had to be extremely flexible and adapt day by day over the past months. We managed to provide dance lessons via zoom online and on YouTube, using both our garden and our home. We danced in the park and even in the rain, just to keep a very important contact with our dancers, many of whom had no school or other clubs happening at the time. We felt privileged to be able to do this and parents told us it was ever so helpful, giving young people a routine at that time. We were so grateful to Fairfield Community Hall for opening up so we could hold a Summer course IN PERSON. Working out timetables and content for socially distanced classes isn't easy, especially when you have a variety of venues and obviously need to adhere to all the guidelines. We have taken a huge financial hit and are having to work on what were our days off. However, we can't tell you how much it means to us to be starting a new term, back with the dancers, who have been absolute superstars throughout and done us all proud. Parents too have been extremely supportive. Although life is a little more complicated, we are so happy to be doing what we love and blessed to see what a difference dance can make to young lives, especially in the current climate. A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us.“

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,
A few weeks ago I discovered a tin of buttons at my mums house. She didn't want them, so I advertised them on the ‘free in Stotfold’ facebook page. Immediately I was contacted by a few people. One of the ladies, has a friend who makes mittens for dementia suffers and she was looking for buttons to sew onto them. She came and collected my Mum's buttons.
Today I have been forwarde the attached two photos of the type of mittens her friend makes. This has got me thinking - how many other Stotfold and Fairfield residents have a tin of buttons at home and would be prepared to donate them to this amazing cause?
The email address to contactif you have any spare buttons is Nettyp1961@gmail.com. I think your readers will agree they really are great. Alison Proctor.
Dear Editor,
We would like to thank everyone who supported our stall at 26 Home Close during the Stotfold Walking Market. We sold all 75 plates of cakes by lunchtime and many face masks. Apologies to those people who turned up later to find an empty table! We raised a magnificent ÂŁ375 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Kind regards Bev and Bob Harrold.
Editors Note: We think we speak for many Stotfold residents in thanking you also for organising such a great event! It was really well organised and enjoyed by the many people we spoke to during the day!

News from
Stotfold Watermill
WE ARE SO VERY SORRY…… As readers will have seen in last month’s report, we have very regrettably had to cancel our Working Steam Weekend for this year. This has been one of our two annual major events – the other one being the Steam Fair and Country Show held in May. As a visitor attraction, it has featured as a major event on the Bedfordshire tourists’ calendar for many years now and attracted visitors and exhibitors from all over the country. It provided a rare opportunity to see a unique collection of steam-driven machines for ploughing, threshing and harvesting that revolutionised farming almost two centuries ago. These faster, more efficient methods meant that bread, which was the staple of life for most of the population, was more affordable. Grain grown specially on the site was harvested, bound into sheaves and fed into a threshing machine driven by a steam engine. Aside from this educational experience, the weekend provided the opportunity to visit a variety of trade and craft stalls, fun fair, food outlets and of course a real ale marquee. A great day out for the whole family! So sorry it will not happen this year but we look forward to its return in October 2021. Meanwhile, the Trustees have been negotiating the use of the field for events in future years and the Major Events team are preparing to plan for the Country Show next May. Their fingers are very firmly crossed that by then we will be free of pandemic restrictions and we will have a really spectacular weekend once again. The aim will be to make this a great weekend for the whole family so that new ideas and attractions are being sought. The success of the event will be dependent on gathering an enthusiastic team of volunteers to assist both with the planning, the days preceding and following the event, as well as during the weekend. If you are interested in helping in any way please contact our Volunteer Support team by emailing voluntersupport@stotfoldmill.com, by phoning 01462 734541 (answerphone message) or writing to Stotfold Mill, Mill Lane, SG5 4NU. Remember that the future of this heritage working mill is totally dependent on the funds raised by volunteers at these two annual events. A great deal of work has been going on in recent weeks even though the mill remains closed. Ray Kilby has continued to produce bags of flour and oats for sale at our various outlets including the Stotfold butchers, Beale Brothers in Regent Street. At the same time scaffolding has been erected and Paul Robinson has been employed to paint the outside. In the nature reserve tree felling has taken place to remove over hanging branches on willows to ensure the safety of visitors walking the riverside path. Members of our volunteer workforce from Teasel have been busily working around the reserve, including creating a new woodland adventure play area.

Support Nathan in his
Marathon effort!
My Marathon journey began in October 2016 when I was diagnosed with testicular cancer. At 37 years old with a young family I was absolutely petrified. My first thought was; Well that’s it, I’m dead. Testicular cancer remains a relatively rare condition and has an incredibly high recovery rate. Despite being told this from the beginning of my treatment, my experience of cancer up to that point was that once you had it, that was it. Everyone I had ever known to suffer with cancer had died from it, including my mother, at least 7 aunts and uncles, as well as friends and colleagues, I lost count at 20 ! Not one I knew had survived more than 5 years beyond their treatment. Having had surgery at Lister I was referred to the great team at Mount Vernon for chemotherapy. Three months of debilitating treatment followed, taking it’s toll on my mind and body. I was required to stay at Mount Vernon for a week at a time, receiving large dose chemo daily, this was followed by two weeks at home with one day a week trips back to Mount Vernon for top-up treatment. That cycle was repeated 3 times. Each day I had to inject myself in the stomach with drugs to bolster my immune system and prevent the chemo drugs from causing harm to my lungs.
Nathan pictured during and after his treatment.
As my treatment progressed, I suffered the dreaded hair loss and the pain of the first time banging my head on something without any padding. As well as the many other side effects of the treatment, too many to list. Despite all that, I began to look around the ward as I sat there being pumped full of poison on a daily basis and thought; do you know what? I am far better off than many of these people. During all this my sister was also undergoing treatment, so trips to Mount Vernon almost became a gruesome family outing, with occasional overlaps for scans, chemo or radiotherapy.
The amazing work they carry out at Mount Vernon is nothing short of a miracle. With help and support of my family and friends I emerged from the other end a little shaken ready to get back to it. Following my treatment my sights then set on getting fit to get back to work. I began with the BBC couch to 5k app, helped by the soothing voice of Sarah Millican. Up to that point I think the furthest I had ever run was the 1500m at school! On a follow-up appointment with my oncologist, I happened to mention that I had started running, to which he said that if I decided to run for charity, would I consider running for the charity for which he is a trustee. This was in October 2019, I checked online and had missed the ballot for the 2020 Marathon. The following day I called my oncologist who put me in touch with the Cancer Treatment and Research Trust (CTRT). I asked if they had charity places in the London Marathon, good news, they do but there is a waiting list. Two days later I received an email, I had been selected to run for the charity in 2020. From 5k I worked my way up to 10k, entering the Standalone 10k to make sure I had something to work towards. I recorded a finishing time of 57 minutes and 58 seconds. Not exactly Mo Farah but respectable I thought, I was on my way. I continued training then COVID came along. The marathon was postponed until October. I scaled back the training to keep motivated but not injure myself, back to 10k a few times a week. I was somewhat disappointed as this is the 40th London Marathon and also my 40th year but I will have just turned 41 by the time I run what will now be the virtual London Marathon. As it has only just been announced I have not yet confirmed a route but I plan to begin my run at Mount Vernon Hospital with the finish line 26.2 miles away, which takes me conveniently to Stevenage Police Station, where I work as a collision investigator. Now almost 4 years since my diagnosis, thanks to the work of the staff, nurses and doctors at Mount Vernon I am fit and well enough to hopefully (with your help) repay the debt. The people at CTRT have been good enough to allow me a place running for their charity. Please help me reach my fundraising target and allow them to continue their great work. We can support you to stay safe at home or accompany you outdoors At the time of writing I have raised £500 with the aim of reaching
TRUSTED CARE IN YOUR OWN HOME
£2000 – Please help me to reach this target by visiting: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/NathanCattley and giving what you can. If you are a UK taxpayer please also tick the Gift Aid box as it increases your donation by 25% at no additional cost to you. If you see me running around the village, do give me a wave, depending on if I am starting or finishing will determine how energetically I wave back! I would like to say a huge thank you to all of those people who have already sponsored me and supported me in so many other ways.

Business As Usual
@ Larksfield Surgery
Larksfield Surgery, Arlesey Road, Stotfold, SG5 4HB A NEW “BUSINESS AS USUAL”
To the majority of patients, we thank you for your continued support, understanding and kindness during the Covid pandemic. We continue to operate in a way that does the most to protect the lives of our patients and our staff. In line with national guidance, over 90% of patients are currently safely managed by video or telephone consultations. For those who do need to be seen face to face, all staff wear PPE and clean areas between patients. This takes time and reduces capacity. We are applying strict decontamination and social distancing rules, therefore, we are having limited patients in the waiting rooms.
Patients attending for a face to face appointment will be given a mask and gloves to wear. COVID is still present and we are still seeing cases in our community and we still need provision for seeing possible COVID cases as well as home visiting services for those that are housebound. Following telephone or video consultations, any patient requiring an examination will be seen within our settings. We are being guided by the Royal College of General Practice, our CCG and NHS England to ensure we prioritise the right services and groups going forward. With courage, commitment and teamwork, our staff have risen to the challenge that COVID presented. We are here for you and we thank you for your understanding and patience during this time. FLU CLINICS The Flu clinic at Larksfield Surgery will begin in September. We will start by inviting High Risk Patients over 65.We are running a barcoded system which will be sent to you. You MUST bring the letter you receive with you along with photo ID to your allocated time slot. We will be taking a forehead temperature on arrival. If it is 37.8C or over we will ask you to return home and book a Covid test. You will be invited to a future clinic. If you cannot attend in your allocated time slot, don't worry - we will invite you to the next clinic. You do not need to let us know You MUST WEAR A FACE COVERING and follow the one-way social distancing system.
Please prepare for rain, etc as queues will be outside. The car park will be closed to allow for safe queueing. Please walk if you are local, or park safely outside. We have also been given permission to use the Football ground car park. Please do not come early. We have tried to arrange the clinics so queues are not too big, but we have a steady flow to enable us to vaccinate as many people as possible within staff and space constraints. Additional clinics dates to be released as soon as possible. The Flu Cohort has been Extended to 50-64 Year Olds this year - this cohort will not be eligible for a flu vaccination until November at the earliest.
Please be patient with us.This year has been particularly challenging and we are trying new ways to deliver our services. We have over 8,000 patients to vaccinate in a 12 week window, whilst adhering to Government Covid guidelines, and continuing our day to day service with limited clinicians, as some are not able to practice face to face due to being in a high risk category themselves. Phone for Appointments: 01462 732244 (Option 1) Phone for Test Results: 01462 732200 (Option 2) OPENING HOURS Monday: 8.00-13.00 14.00-18.30 NO JOB TOO SMALL Tuesday/Friday: 8.00-18.30 Exterior & Interior Property Maintenance Saturday/Sunday: Closed You name it and we’ll do it! Pippin Pre-School
We have had a busy few weeks settling our new children into the pre-school, we are pleased to announce they have adjusted to their new routines beautifully. The children’s play so far has been focused on the topic of ‘All About Me’, learning about their body, talking about their homes and families.
Our Superstar children are encouraged to take part in daily adult-led activities, usually as part of a small group of children. These activities are carefully planned to provide the children with a fun and stimulating learning experience which will hopefully instil a 'life long' love of learning. Our Superstars also participate in a short 'circle time' which focuses on a letter sound, number, shape and colour of the week.
Our younger children (those who remain under 3 years of age for the whole academic year), are known as our Littlestars. These children use our large playroom on the ground floor together with our inviting outdoor area. These areas provide a wide range of engaging resources and play opportunities to enhance your child's development through their play and they are supported and nurtured by our kind and caring staff.
As the new term begins we are looking for parents/carers to join our Pre-school Committee. If you can spare a little time each month to attend a meeting and help out with fundraising activities we would love to hear from you, please email pippincommittee@gmail.com
We continually require items for our gluing table and welcome any old buttons, milk bottle tops, ribbon and old birthday cards. Please drop any items off to the office during term time. We wish to thank everyone who has donated so far. We look forward to sharing more of our news with you again next month. If you would like a virtual tour of our pre-school please visit the homepage on our website pippinpreschool.co.uk Pippin Pre-School, Buttercup Road, Stotfold, Herts, SG5 4PF www.pippinpreschool.co.uk info@pippinpreschool T: 01462 834897

Roecroft Lower School
It feels so good to be back into a new routine and to be able to welcome our children back. The school feels full again, full of love and learning.
Opening under such unusual circumstances was never going to be ideal, many of the things we love and enjoy each year are having to be put on hold for now. That aside, the resilience, respect and understanding from staff, families and pupils alike has been humbling. We are able to learn and work in an environment that feels safe and very similar to ‘normal’ school life, this is thanks to everyone’s hard work and commitment to making Holiday Village this work.
Hopton
We always like to put an update in the Stotfold News about some of the learning in school, we share this over the year and this month we are hearing a little from Key Stage 1:
Fancy getting away?
Luxury 8 Berth Caravan available for holiday let.
Various dates available between now and October.
In Year 1, we have had a wonderful start to term and have settled into our new classrooms beautifully. We have enjoyed making happiness boxes, sharing special memories from our summer holiday and Secure your dates NOW. Fully double glazed with participating in lots of lovely friendship activities to develop our social skills.
Over the Autumn term, alongside our English and maths, we will be focusing on our new topic 'A Toy Story' to explore our foundation subjects which is very exciting! We are looking forward to exploring artwork by Andy Warhol and creating our own toy block printing patterns, comparing past and present toys in history and developing our understanding of maps through Winnie the Pooh's Hundred Acre Wood!
Year 2 have settled into school and are enjoying being Swans, Owls and Nightingales. They have been getting to know their new classrooms, learning different routines and completing interesting work. This half term our topic is 'Fire and Ice' (which is a firm favourite in Year 2). We will be learning about The Great Fire of London, The Fire Service and Arctic regions. Furthermore, in Design and Technology they will get the chance to make a moving vehicle using wheels, axles and a chassis. In Art they will be studying the artist Jackson Pollock to create their own fire and ice splat painting pictures. It will be an exciting autumn term for Year 2!
Finally, I hope you are all safe, well and looking after one another. Warmest wishes, Mrs Cross

News from
St Mary’s Academy
The children have all settled back into the school routine very well and it’s amazing how quickly the lock-down period and summer holidays are forgotten!
We are hoping for continued mild weather so that we can fully enjoy our wonderful outside areas. By the time this item is published, we will have virtually taken part in our school Harvest Festival Celebration as well as a number of class assemblies. Our school photographs will be taken on Tuesday 13th October – ideal gifts for that ‘season’ that will be upon us all too quickly!
Our 2021 New Parents Information Evening cannot be held in school due to current COVID-19 restrictions however there will be information available on our website and distributed through our local nurseries. Families of children starting school in September 2021 are invited to contact us for information about starting school and what they can look forward to during their time at St Mary’s. Our head is hoping to offer external show rounds and Q&A sessions.
Finally, we should mention that we are well into the new learning mission for the Autumn Term, including 'All About Me' in Reception Classes, ‘Nurturing Nurses' in Key Stage 1 and ‘The Vikings' and ‘The Stone Age’ in Key Stage 2. Much to look forward to. We are only just back at school from such a long break but the planned October Half Term is from Monday 26th to Friday 30th October with an INSET training day on Monday 2nd November. As always please feel free to contact us or visit our website for more information on St Mary's!

Pix Brook Academy
First week at Pix Brook Academy in our new building! I cannot say it’s not a relief to have got here without any last minute bumps in the road. I think it is worth spending a moment or two to consider quite what an achievement this has been.
The contractors, Willmott Dixon started work on site on the 16th September 2019. To have handed over phase one of the school less than a year later is a fantastic achievement. To have done so with the huge impact of a global pandemic makes this truly remarkable. During this period, there have been a number of occasions when questions have been asked about the feasibility of delivering a school of this size and quality in such a time frame. To be sitting in a working school, with pupils in lessons and learning taking place is frankly fantastic. I am enormously grateful to all involved that we are in this position.
Clearly there is more to do. The school offers facilities and resources that are state of the art and I look forward to the opportunity to show these to parents, existing and prospective. Sadly the current situation makes this very difficult, social distancing is still a priority for all school visitors however I am able to take individual visitors around the school. Should you wish to do so please contact the school.
It is important to remember that notwithstanding the momentous changes in the school building this time of year is about young people returning to school after a break. This year it is even harder because most children have been out of school for such a long time. For those of us at PBA we are determined to ensure that the quality of the building is matched by the quality of the teaching. We understand that there is much to do to try to catch up the work that has inevitably been missed during the long months of lock down. There are no quick fixes in education, those parents who worked with their own children during this period will appreciate the challenges, but this is our core purpose and all the staff are just pleased to be back doing their job. Its been great to work with children and we were also pleased to be able to photograph our pupils next to the Pix Brook Height chart, it will be amazing to see what they look like when they leave in seven years when we do the same thing!
The long process of both catching up and making progress started this week. The government guidelines in terms of how we must work with children does not make this process any easier, but what we have is a fantastic body of pupils and a committed team working in a brilliant school who are determined to provide the best experiences possible for our pupils. Week one is over and we look forward to rest of the year.
We look forward toupdating you on our first term news in the November issue of the Stotfold News Magazine. Steve Adams. Pix Brook pupils next to the height chart in Year 5

Poppies Nursery
As this is being written, schools and nurseries are due to finally re-open! We will be running our provision outdoors as much as possible as being in the fresh air and the outdoors are being promoted to reduce the risk of catching Covid 19. To support this, at our Poppies site, St Mary’s Academy, we will be using our Spinney and the adjacent wild area belonging to the school. Over the summer we added an outdoor classroom, dens, a quarry for digging and a mud kitchen! The children will love it! Huge thanks to Head Teacher, Sam Bishop, for allowing us to use this. Both Poppies and Poppyfields adopt the forest school ethos and at both nurseries we have lots of lovely outdoor activities planned for children to enjoy, involving pebbles, logs, leaves and other treasures of nature! We are very pleased to say we will be fully reopening Poppyfields breakfast and after school club (children aged 2 years to 7 year olds) and starting a new breakfast and after school club at Poppies for children aged 2 years to, at present, reception age. This is in partnership with SMASH as it enables us to separate the school children into their year group bubbles. We currently have space at both nurseries and out of hours clubs. Please contact us at billpoppies@gmail.com or billpoppyfields@gmail.com and we will be pleased to help you. Kind regards and keep safe, Joanne and The Team

News from
Etonbury Academy
It is wonderful to see so many smiling faces back at Etonbury. The children have returned to see further improvements to the school including new sports equipment, a refurbished SEND room and classrooms, new fire alarms and expanded play areas and we have just received the keys for our new reception area which we hope to open after half term. Exciting times.
For the second year running, we attained a further set of exceptional GCSE results, and nationally, our children have achieved significantly over and above what they were expecting. We are awaiting the local authority Welcome pack for pupils at Etonbury ratings, but we expect to be at the top again this year. Huge congratulations to all our students, who we welcomed back to school on results day to hand them their results, present them with their leaving gift and give the teachers an opportunity to say their fond farewells.
We have returned to doing what we love. Educating our children in the classroom to be the best that they can be. We welcomed our new year 5s from St Mary’s Church of England,Farfield Park, Roecroft, Pixmore Junior, Gothic Mede, Langford Village, Wilbury Juniors, Derwent Lower and Stondon Lower. Further up the school, we were joined by a number of new students and we are certain they will enjoy their time at Etonbury meeting new friends, experiencing the wide curriculum and enjoying our new facilities. With small year groups, we are fortunate that our teams can really get to know every child.
All our staff and students were excited to receive their welcome back pack, with a pad, pen and a special message. Mr Evason, Principal, greeted the school in a virtual assembly and then achieved 47K steps during the day as he walked around the building (one way) meeting all our children! It has been quite uplifting to see how responsible and mature our children have been on their return. The children have been enjoying separate break times, introduced to the one way system and embracing the sanitising procedures to keep Etonbury safe. We will no doubt need to adapt our procedures as things change, but we know that our community has the strength and ability to support this.
We must congratulate Miss Vernon-Hamilton for achieving 5th place in the triple jump at the British Athletics Championships held at the beginning of term. We have exceptionally talented staff and students which we hope to tell you more about over the coming months. Their skills and talents contribute significantly to the success of Etonbury.

As we look ahead for this academic year 2020/2021 with some uncertainty, we are fortunate to have the people, pastoral care, technology and a supportive community to continue providing the education our children deserve with their wellbeing at the centre of everything we do. For now, friendships have been rekindled and classroom teaching has resumed...it’s a sight to behold.

Karen’s Quest To Rebuild Her Business.. We spoke to regular Stotfold News advertiser Karen Garner as she talked us through the challenges she has faced adapting her business J‘ o Jingles’ to meet the latest Covid safety guidelines. Here she explains the changes she has made and her new way of working..
‘After the initial shock and confusion back in March, we quickly decided that running our business online using Facebook and YouTube was going to have to be the way forward for quite some time to come.’ ‘Running music, singing & movement classes for babies & pre-school children was going to be extremely tricky when we were unable to meet socially with people from outside our own household.’ Karen told the Stotfold News Magazine.
‘We had the task of accommodating and providing for over 150 customers who had pre-paid for a term of classes which we were two weeks away from finishing.’ ‘Myself and my class teacher Sarah, leapt into action 48 hours after lockdown and the learning curve began in the online world. Sadly, we quickly realised that we couldn't present these sessions together as we had to be in our own homes.’ ‘This was one of the toughest decisions we made as we are very much a team however my family room at home soon became our studio! Fast forward six month’s and we are now offering fun online music sessions on a regular basis.’
Pictured above Jo Jingles’s Karen Garner
CHIMNEY SWEEP
Karen explained to us that it has been a very emotional time for her as a business owner with some of her parents reducing her to tears with their steadfast loyalty and support.. ‘Our parents were incredibly loyal and supported the decisions we took by joining us in our online world and even paying a reduced fee.’ ‘I think they just wanted to help us survive as a business until we could get back to some sort of new normal.’ The good news is that as we go to press both Sarah and Karen have reopened some of their classes with safety measures in place. As the guidelines are constantly changing they have to be open to change at the drop of a hat and feel prepared to face the next few weeks and the challenges it may bring. ‘I'm hopeful we can continue to build on these first steps but it's early days and we all know things can change quite quickly,’ Karen explained. ‘Live and interactive music making for children in a face to face class is the perfect way to help them develop and engage. You'd be surprised too at how much the parents and carers missed us...and I thought it was just a music class for children! Jo Jingles North Herts 01462 456777 www.jojingles.com/northherts

Red Sky at Night.. Many of our facebook followers will have seen the wonderful photographs sent to us one evening back in early September when the sky was showing us all some of it’s phenomenal natural beauty. Prompted by a phone picture taken by our daughter Amber we asked anyone if they too had managed to catch a picture of the stunning early evening sky.
Here are a selection which we wanted to share with those people not on social media...we think you will agree they are rather splendid!

Ladies -Looking For a New Way To
Keep Fit?
During January and February of this unique year, a trio of enthusiastic local women; Lisa, Keeley and Elisa, wanted to play rugby but there wasn’t a local team for them to train with or join. By the end of February, a couple of willing coaches were recruited to their group, with plans for a new Ladies Rugby Fitness session eagerly set.
The unfortunate lockdown bombshell halted their start, but the drive and enthusiasm meant that word soon got round... female friends, family and anyone curious to try out this new Rugby Fitness session began volunteering to have a try. Following the Government’s green light, the new Letchworth RUFC Lionesses had their first ever training session on Wednesday 1st July. Under the Covid-19 guidance the initial focus was on fitness and was attended by nine ladies. Since this inaugural session, the numbers have grown each week, with 20 currently attending, most of whom have never touched a rugby ball in their lives! The aim of the group is to have fun, get rugby based fitness training, be part of a supportive social group, and evolve a team to play Ladies matches representing Letchworth Rugby Club. The club is a warm and welcoming group, looking for new members, so if you are over 17 years of age, are interested in playing Ladies rugby for Letchworth RUFC or just fancy some rugby fitness fun, why not pop along to a session and see if it’s for you. Any fitness level welcome and no prior knowledge of the game is required. Training sessions are on Wednesday evenings 7.30-8.30pm at Legends Lane, Letchworth SG6 2EN. For more info contact; Elisa Luggeri 07880 714400 Lisa Wright 07796 578032 or find them on Facebook @Letchworth RUFC - Ladies Rugby Fitness

Now playing in Division One of the Royston Crow league, the boys are looking forward to getting back to the game as of this week. Coached by Barry West, Gary Witherington and Barry Grainger, the Under 13’s Amber’s have enjoyed a successful few years and have grown into a well established team with a good strong reputation.
Barry West told the Stotfold News ‘We are hugely excited to be back playing matches and enjoying training after such a long break away. The lads have been able to play in new kits every season and always look smart wherever they play! We are extremely thankful to First Step Estate Agents for the amazing support they have shown to us over the last four years, contributing with equipment and also sponsoring our kits. Garden Club
Meetings and Trips Update.
Welcome to our latest update for Stotfold Gardening Club.
As the situation has not changed since my last update and the church hall will re-open in October but only with a maximum of 18 people, I have looked at other meeting venues and they are either closed or only permitted a maximum of 30 people in a group.
If the rules on numbers are lifted but still with the social distancing, the Conservative Club is a possibility as they can take up to 65. The outing is definitely cancelled as we could not sort out the bookings.
The two speakers will be cancelled nearer the time if there is no change to the numbers.
I will update again next month Stay safe, Peter.

Hi everyone. We’re quickly into the autumn months and the new menus we have wrote here at the golf club start to bend towards those lovely comforting dishes that remind us of home, family and of course Grandmothers . Well not this months dish, if my grandmother knew what a “ Turks Turban squash” was , she kept it close to her chest! News from
Stotfold Methodist Church
Masked and suitably sanitised and distanced, I prepared to lead our first service in the church building for six months. Very different from before, because we’re downstairs in the church hall. Upstairs, the chapel is unsuitable for social distancing and difficult to sanitise.
What sense are we to make of our various experiences in this time, traditionally the Harvest Festival season? As the church gathers to celebrate harvest, displaying goods that cannot be distributed as previously, what relevant lesson can we learn?
Perhaps, as tins and boxes are stacked and vegetables set out on the table for the Harvest Festival service, I imagine that it will bring to mind supermarket shelves that were suddenly empty as lockdown started, and food parcels that people prepared for others, and the stores that became so essential in the Need Project. These images were so much our focus six months ago.
What has changed since? Obviously the supply lines are much better now, and, hopefully, hoarding will not be repeated. But there's still vulnerability and need in our neighbourhood. What I'm hoping is that the good spirit of thinking about others, the holy command to “love your neighbour as yourself, will remain in people's hearts and continue to be revealed into the future. Lockdown had devastating and long lasting effects on many people, but it also revealed a spirit of compassion that encouraged so many of us.
An abundance of neighbourliness is a good harvest for any society. I pray it may continue.

Dance For Everyone! with Imagination Dance Imagination Arts was founded in 2018 to provide dance and movement opportunities for those who are rarely offered them! We are passionate about delivering specialist, tailor-made sessions which can range from Wheelchair Dance, to Dance for Dementia, to Over 60s Movement to Music classes, to SEND after-school clubs! At Imagination Arts, we strive to give all our participants a fun, no-pressure environment where the focus is on enjoying yourself rather than a polished performance. Unlike dance companies that work on show pieces and performances, Imagination Arts believe Imagination dance lessons continuing for everyone thoughout lock down! that as long as everybody is joining in safely, it doesn’t matter if you’re Fred Astaire…or have two left feet!
We are a business focused around fighting social isolation and bringing people together, so the COVID-19 pandemic really hit us in a difficult way. We could no longer provide the face-to-face classes we so loved doing, and the fear of our participants becoming lonely was a real worry for us. However, we were determined to keep working through the ‘lockdown’ and started to take our classes online. Thankfully, we were able to move 4 out of our 6 Movement to Music classes for Over 60s online, with the majority of our participants continuing to take part in the weekly classes. It has been really lovely to keep this contact with our participants, as so many of them rely on our weekly class as a regular form of contact with the outside world. The COVID-19 pandemic has been difficult – financially; emotionally and socially – but it has, at least, reinforced the importance of the social element in dance. Imagination Arts has always believed that dance is the medicine for loneliness, and we now know this to be truer than ever.
We are so excited to be bringing two fantastic Over 60s classes to Fairfield Community Hall! Our popular Movement to Music class which is perfect for those wanting to keep moving without the intensity of a Keep Fit or Zumba class, and our wonderful Seated Dance and Exercise class which is a brilliant way for those wanting a chair-based, low impact class to work on their coordination, strength and flexibility. Our classes are an excellent way to start socialising and exercising in a safe and COVID-19 secure way after the past few months. Contact us to book your space – info.imaginationarts@yahoo.com OR 07714 378 887! We look forward to seeing you soon!
