From the Editor Welcome to September! Compiling September’s issue always brings it’s own set of challenges. Juggling work and children whilst trying to escape for a few days away, means many late nights and plenty burning of the midnight oil.

Our September issue is slightly different to other months as the majority of our schools have closed for the summer break. We look forward to welcoming them all back to the magazine with their news from the new term. We wish everyone starting their new school year - and those children starting school for the very first time, the very best of luck. This month in the absence of school news you’ll notice we have more articles which we hope you will enjoy and have left out our directory of services for this month only. Next month we will be back to our usual format! Hopefully you’ll also notice we have quite a few new advertisers to the magazine. Next month, we welcome Bedfordshire Road Safety Partnership to the magazine with their first submission aimed at promoting casualty reduction in Stotfold. We are working closely with our local force to help raise awareness of road safety issues in Stotfold and welcome your thoughts on this at our usual address. During September we look forward to participating in our first event in Arlesey to mark the launch of our sister publication The Arlesey News Magazine. We will be at Arlesey Summer fete on September 7th so please do pop along and support us as we venture into new territory with our promotional stand.

Your voice matters this month with the consultations looming for new play equipment in our parks within Stotfold. Fill in the questionnaire on pages 25 and 26 of this month’s issue to have your say on the equipment we have in all our play areas,

Matthew Raises Funds For Cancer UK

Matthew Barber, age 20 from Vaughan Road, wanted to raise money for Cancer Research UK as he has lost several family members to cancer. He decided to dye his hair blue to match the colour of the Matthew Barber and his blue hair! fund raising wristbands he was selling to raise extra money for Cancer Research UK. He approached the Queen Street Barbers at the Barn Hair Studio in Stotfold, who kindly offered to provide their services free of charge - many thanks to Ryan, Sarah and Julie for doing this. Wristbands are available for a suggested ÂŁ1 donation at the True Briton pub in Arlesey - thanks to Kerry and the bar staff for displaying them on the bar. So far, Matthew has raised around ÂŁ300 from sponsorship money and from selling the Cancer Research UK wristbands. He has a fundraising link if anyone would like to sponsor him:

Etonbury Students Excel At British Schools Competition Two pupils from Etonbury Academy competed among the very best young athletes in the country at this year’s British Schools competition held at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham during July. Gracie Wall 13, won gold at the championships held each year, with over 1600 competitors taking part. Gracie represented Bedfordshire and Luton Schools and competed in the Junior Girls (U15) high jump event winning with a fantastic personal best jump of 1m 68cms. As one of only two first year U15’s competing in the event, this was an amazing achievement against twenty of the top high jumpers in the country. Gracie, coached by Barry Johnson at Bedford and County Athletics Club, had to achive a height of 1m 59cms prior to June in order to qualify for selection. “As a first year U15 there was no pressure on me. People kept telling me to do my best and just enjoy the experience and not be put off by the atmosphere and size of the event. So I actually just Gracie Wall with her gold medal felt relaxed and excited to jump.” In a nail biting end to the competition with only two competitors left in it was head to head and Gracie held her nerve and jumped an enormous 1m 68cms on her third attempt to win the gold medal. Gracie has also qualified for the English Schools National Athletics competition due to be held later this year.

Joe Bennett in only his second year in club athletics, also exceeded expectation by not only becoming schools district and county champion, but also having the honour of representing Bedfordshire in the 200m sprint at the English Schools Championship in Birmingham. On the day, Joe ran his second best time ever, however due to a very high-class field he was not able to come away with a medal. Joe enjoyed and learnt from the occasion and being a multi-sport athlete, will use the experience to further his development within the sports he simply loves to compete in.

Joe Bennett representing Beds in the 200m sprint

Congratulations to both Gracie and Joe, we look forward to following your development in the future!

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

Good to see the photo of the Co-op staff ( 31 ! ) in the last edition, as at that time It was the largest shop in either Stotfold or Arlesey, with both grocery and clothing departments, both with their own management structures.

I recognise nearly all the faces, as my father Ron Lindsay was the clothing manager ( back row , peering over the should of Dennis ?. ) Clothing was on the 1st floor of the Stotfold Shop. My mother Dorothy Lindsay is also in the photograph, middle of the middle row, next to her great friend Joan Ingrey.

We lived in the Co-op house at 1, Regent Street, which had a curved hedge round a large garden, both long since gone ! Regards Steve Lindsay MBE

News from

Stotfold Watermill

Much has happened and more to look forward to….

Last month started with a visit to the mill by a party from Central Beds Council for a presentation, tour and cream tea. The group came at the invitation of local Councillor Brian Saunders, who is currently Council Chairman, with the aim of raising funds for the NEED Project, which is his chosen charity for the year. The party certainly enjoyed their visit and we hope they were very generous in their donations for this worthwhile charity. We are grateful to Councillor Saunders for inviting the members from CBC and we hope that those from the western fringes can now appreciate what a gem of a visitor attraction we have on the counties eastern border. If you are a member of a local club or organisation, or have friends from further afield who belong to an interest group, you might consider recommending a party visit for a tour of the mill followed by a lunch or tea in the Randall’s Tea Room. Next time you are on the internet why not explore our website. Even if you think you know about us you will find much to fascinate you. August is of course school holiday time and the Education Team has been busily running events for children. If you have seen youngsters around the nature reserve clutching magnifying glasses and fishing nets, pouring over pirate maps, or heard a few minor explosions, they will have all been part of this summer’s activities. These sessions are extremely popular and usually over-booked, so it is very disappointing when families, having booked a place on line, fail to turn up. Looking to the future, on 7th/8th September we have our Craft Weekend at the Mill. The Ivel Room will be full of Crafts and Prints over this weekend. Come and chat with the artists, find inspiration or treat yourself, or someone else, to a unique hand-made gift. It is not too early to seek out that special Christmas present! If you feel creative yourself, you might care to join our very popular Watercolour Workshop with Paul Fullstone, on 28th September if places are still available. For the more energetic, join the walk on Sunday, 15th September, ‘The Mills of the Etonbury Green Wheel’, which is part of theBedfordshire Walking Festival. Lead by Tim Boughen, the walk leaves the mill car park at 10.30. It is a two-hour walk, taking in the three mills of Stotfold and Astwick, St Guthlac’s church and along the river Ivel, with the possibility of spotting herons and kingfishers amongst the wildlife, before returning to the mill and the opportunity for refreshment in the Kingfisher Tea Room.

CHIMNEY SWEEP

Next month we have the Working Steam Weekend on 5th/6th October, so now is the time to make sure you have it booked in your diary. This year’s event is planned to be more interesting than ever with the theme of ‘Farming Past and Present’, we will be joined for the first time by Olivers. With their heritage in agricultural machinery stretching back for 180 years, the historic exhibits will come right up to date with two state of the art Claas tractors. If you have never been to this event it is not to be missed, and if you have visited before, this year will have even more to view. in addition to ploughing with shire horses, steam ploughs and ancient tractors, there will be a vast collection of steam-driven machine. The heritage wheat crop grown on the field, has already been harvested and the sheaves are stacked ready for the threshing machine.

To complete the story of historic agriculture, the mill will be operating to produce flour and running the newly restored grain crusher, originally built by Henry Bamford & Son. Trade stands and craft stalls complete the whole day experience with the real ale beer marquee and varied food outlets available.

Stotfold News Magazine .. Where Do You Read Yours? Costa Rica

Two readers of the Stotfold News Magazine most certainly answered our plea to pack their issue of the magazine alongside them as they embarked on their summer travels this year. Stotfold residents Mick and Brenda Haskell travelled over 15500 miles by sea, reaching some amazing destinations! Mick packed the first edition of the Arlesey News and the latest edition of the Stotfold News just to see how far a new publication can reach in a short period of time.

New York City

‘It flew with us on the A380 super jumbo from London to SAN Francisco before boarding the Queen Elizabeth and sailing down the Pacific Ocean along the west coast of Americas, through the Panama Canal, on to The Caribbean before sailing up the Atlantic Ocean to USA, Canada and Nova Scotia before turning to Iceland and returning to the U.K. via Scotland and Dublin. Here are a few pictures showing the magazines in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama City, the Panama Canal, Aruba, Fort Lauderdale, New York, Canada, Nova Scotia, Iceland and Scotland.’ Aruba

San Fransico

Guatamala

Mick and Brenda left both magazines on board the Queen Elizabeth in the hope that other passengers pick it up and read the note they left inside asking for whoever reads it to contact the Stotfold News Magazine and let us know where it’s reached! Who knows? it may travel the globe! Huge thanks Brenda and Mick, we have loved looking the pictures and seeing where we went!

TEASEL

SEPTEMBER BULLETIN The Nature Reserve has won (yet another!) green flag award. This is a national award for an outstanding “green” amenity, and is due in no small part to the Teasel volunteers. Teasel volunteers wear a uniform, so people visiting the Reserve don’t wonder who these strange gardeners/diggers/hedge builders/path layers are. In the picture below, some have just finished re-purposing some pallets. We hold an annual BBQ, and somehow seem to be fairly lucky with the rain, although we did erect some shelter just in case! The next big job is building some steps up to the mound in the far end of the site, near the bird hide. This has had to be postponed twice because of weather, but should be done by the next issue of these CLAIRE’S occasional bulletins.

Sip & Shop Success For Stotfold Ladies. Stotfold ladies Carly Tiplady and Jen Powell are celebrating the success of yet another charity fundraiser in aid of the Garden House Hospice, Letchworth. The event, a Sip & Shop’ night raised just under £3000 For the GHH. The evening held at Stotfold Conservative Club provided a huge array of ladies clothing, shoes and accessories for sale alongside a Prosecco bar, gel nail bar, hair bar, tarot card tables and a BBQ. The girls would like to thank all of those people that contributed clothing, raffle prizes and their time and effort in ensuring that yet another charity evening went without a hitch. They were once again, overwhelmed by the generosity and support they received.

Carly told the Stotfold News Magazine; ‘In the last 9 months we have raised Carly Tiplady with Carly Jukes and Jen Powell £12,000 with two separate events, this is an amazing amount for a truly outstanding charity which is close to many of our hearts. This fund raising is bittersweet for me as if my mum was still here these events would not have taken place, but I feel proud to do something like this in memory of my amazing mum’. I’d especially like to thank two of my very close friends. Jen Powell and Carly Jukes for all of their help once again. Thank you also to Stotfold Conservative club for the use of the venue and to the Stotfold New Magazine for supporting us with advertising, tickets and posters for our event. The Garden House Hospice provides care to the communities of North Hertfordshire, Stevenage and towns and villages in Central Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire -a community of over 230,000 people. The hospice requires almost £5 million pound in total income every year to continue providing the wide range of free services to patients, their carers and Stotfold Garden Club families alike. Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

For a second time I have come very close to an accident whilst using the footpath/cycle path on the outbound side of Hitchin Road by motorists pulling out of their drive without showing any regard for cycle path users. Wearing hi viz yellow I should have been easily visible on a clear day to any motorist who was paying proper attention and presuming the motorists concerned were Hitchin Road residents they must have been well aware of the presence of the cycle path.

We want to hear from you! Email us at stotfold.news@yahoo.co.uk

I feel this problem is likely to continue until the cycle path section of the footpath/cycle path is properly white lined so that all concerned know its boundaries and whether it is cyclists on the cycle path or motorists leaving their homes to access Hitchin Road who have priority, this needs to be made clear. A properly marked cycle path might also influence those who routinely park cars across the cycle/footpath.

Through this letter could I please ask Stotfold Town Council to urgently look into this matter before a potentially serious accident occurs. Malcolm Roberts Hazel Grove

Stotfold Volunteer Scoops Award

Hundreds of people turned out on 4th June to celebrate the inspiring achievements of Central Bedfordshire’s volunteers. The fifth Cheering Volunteering awards and celebration evening took place at the Grove Theatre, in Dunstable. The annual event began in 2015 to thank the many volunteers and voluntary organisations across Central Bedfordshire for the often-unheralded work they do to help others in their community. One of the most prestigious awards of the evening was presented to Stotfold’s Clare Kilby, Volunteer for the community of Stotfold. Claire’s volunteering career has lead her down many paths, including the Stotfold Scouts, Stotfold Mill and much, much more. Claire was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award a prize so richly deserved in recognition for the many hours she has given to the community of Stotfold. Claire Kilby with her award

Comanche Cubs Cub Scouts are boys and girls aged 7¾ to 10½ years. We enjoy learning new skills and finding out about our world. The Summer term is always action-packed for the Cubs, with many outdoor activities to enjoy, including shelter building at Rowney Warren, egg parachuting at Etonbury, gardening, and lots of walks around the local area. In June, 24 Cubs went to Boyd Field in Henlow for a two day camp. The weather was very hot so we made the most of it by having a water fight. We also built some rafts and tested them on the lake. Most Cubs “fell in” the lake, which helped us to keep cool! As well as water activities and fire lighting, the Cubs played wide games on the field, and we had a go at orienteering and tested the new Boyd activity trail. Akela also taught the Cubs how to participate safely in air rifle shooting, and we hope to hone our shooting skills later in the autumn term. In the evening, we went on a walk around Henlow.

Akela and the other leaders are already planning our next camp in October. We currently have places in Cubs, so if you would like your child to join us in September, please email Jan Peace - janpeace@gmail.com In July, we took part in a 6-mile sponsored walk to raise funds for Garden House Hospice. We have so far raised over £600! If you would like to sponsor us, our page is https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/StotfoldCubs Group news After 3 years in post, our Group Scout Leader (Ric Passey) and Group Chairman (John McBurney) have decided to step down from their roles. We now require people to fill these important roles. These roles require very little scouting experience and all training required is provided. Ric and John will remain on the Group Executive, which will provide a good starting point for any new role holder, and John and Ric are happy to discuss the roles informally. If you are interested in becoming a Leader or helper, or require further information, please contact Group Executive member Ric Passey (07764 188222

News from

St Mary’s CE Academy Following a very busy Summer term, we said goodbye to our Year 4 children. They enjoyed their trip to Rock UK and celebrated their last few days with a barbecue, talent show and a special Leaver’s Assembly on the last day of term. We wish them all the very best in their next step at middle school. In the new term starting on Wednesday 4th September, we look forward to welcoming everyone back, especially our children and families who are starting in Reception later in the month. We look forward to all of our usual Autumn term events lined up, including Harvest Festival, parent’s information evenings, SMSA events and class assemblies. We will also hit the ground running with our many extra-curricular clubs, so much to look forward to! After a year of brilliant fundraising by the SMSA we will be looking to revitalise our ICT Suite into an exciting and creative Science and Technology space and the Foundation Stage play area should also be transformed with new, all year round brightly coloured, astro turf! As a school we are also very proud of our fundraising efforts which in this last academic year totalled over £3,400.00 which has been distributed to many charities like Macmillan, Children In Need, Young Epilepsy, Save the Children, Comic Relief, Mary’s Meals, The Stotfold Good Neighbour Group and The Need Project. Many thanks go to our staff, community and families for their continued support without which this would not have been possible. Stotfold Festival Week and Fete We would like to thank everyone who supported or took part in the Festival week and Fete this year. As some of you will be aware, it is now 17 years since St Mary’s School took over the coordination of the Festival Week from the Carnival Committee who had organised 30 wonderful years of events. 2019 was our 15th Fete, voluntarily organised by just a few St Mary’s staff with the help of a dedicated few friends. Despite asking for help or ideas in previous Stotfold News items, this has not been forthcoming and this year the Fete was not supported by a number of community groups within Stotfold. As such, we have decided that whilst we are still happy to coordinate the Festival Week’s events, we will not be organising another fete at the end of the week. We would love for someone or another organisation to take this on as fresh ideas and enthusiasm is required. We would like to thank those who have been with us since our first year, Chris Webster and Nick Cave, Mrs Bundock, Stotfold Twirlers, the Stotfold News ladies, the Charge family and a few St Mary’s Academy staff and families who have all given up time in an attempt to give Stotfold a traditional afternoon of village fete activities. Your support has been invaluable with many thousands of pounds raised for good causes. Thank you.

Royal British Legion Fundraising Success Over the past few years, the group pictured to the right have raised over £30,000 for the Royal British Legion nationally and locally. They are all veterans and members of the Branch. It is thanks to them, and others like them, who continue to give their time, often in a very energetic way, that the Royal British Legion can continue to support our Service Personnel, their Dependants and our Veterans along with others we support to give Holistic Care and Support whether it be Physical, Psychological, Social, Financial, Education, or Spiritual, thus upholding Camaraderie, Socialisation, Remembrance and Accountability for fundraising which is the ethos of the RBL.

Recent fundraisers include, Mark Bentley who raised in excess of £2,000 in May by RBL fundraisers pictured at auctioning one of his picture prints .Special thanks must go to Mark’s employers, Arlesey War Memorial Johnson & Mathey of Royston, who matched his £1,000. The prints auctioned, a copy of which he is holding in photo, was his version of ARMISTICE DAWN taken on 11th November 2014 at the Tower of London with field of Poppies to the WW1 fallen. Paul Andrews, raised £2,559 last year by completing a “Ten mile Para. Yomp” in Essex. The funds were raised via his ‘Just Giving’ page for the RBL Nationally. The next fundraising event will be when Branch members Paul Watts, Phillip Johnys and Paul Blogden Cycle to YPRES in Belgium, on the 14th August -a total of 300 miles. En route, they will visit THEAKVALE CEMETERY and lay a Wreath on behalf of RBL Stotfold & Arlesey Branch. On arrival at YPRES they will again lay another Wreath at the MENIN GATE. You can still sponsor this group by visiting: https://www.justgiving.com/PedaltoYpres The RBL Branch is always looking for new members to enable us to continue the good work we are doing locally and nationally Contact Phillip Johnys, Membership Secretary on 07973 376649 or Andy Fievez 01462 731811 or David Langridge 01462 734133.
