From the Editor Welcome to our September issue. As I sit writing this month’s Editor’s note I am listening to the biggest storm we have had for sometime and watching some spectacular lightning. Its all a welcome change from the extremely high temperatures we have had lately! Speaking of change, we hope by the time you read this we are all finding ourselves slowly embracing the changes we are seeing to our everyday lives, and preparing our children for their return to school life.

We were most fortunate to escape away to Cornwall during August and throughly enjoyed the change of scenery. We usually enjoy including all of the pictures sent to us this time of year showing readers with their magazines in exotic locations, but this year we realise this has been more difficult than usual with the current situation. Not to be perturbed, you can still see how one Stotfold resident managed to take his magazine along with him on two small breaks away this summer by turning to page 7 of this month’s issue! As always, we would like to thank our truly wonderful team of delivery volunteers who have battled through the heat to ensure your magazines are reaching you in time. Each and every member of this team has been beyond amazing during the last few months and we are so very grateful for their support.. Thank you to Tim Boughen for the beautiful picture we chose for our front cover this month - more details on how your picture could be used on a future front cover can be found on page 33. We look forward to being able to bring you more local group and school news next month as we embrace our new normal - next stop Christmas! Take care, Joanne.

40 Challenges in 40 days for Caroline. In September 2020, Stotfold lady Caroline Chessum was set to walk 50km to raise money for mental health charity Mind.

Sadly, due to the COVID lock down restrictions Caroline’s walk was cancelled. As 2020 was a big celebratory year for Caroline she was determined to continue with her plan to raise money for this amazing cause and came up with a new plan; 40 challenges in 40 days before the big 4-0! She (bravely) asked family and friends to submit the challenges via Facebook in return for sponsorship. Caroline took on the eclectic mix of challenges with gusto, including going for a walk in 40 pieces of clothing, completing 5 random acts of kindness, 40 reps of a different exercise every day and stuffing 40 marshmallows in her mouth in one go, plus many more! Caroline turned 40 on the 6th August having completed all 40 challenges and raising over £1000 for her chosen cause.

You can still sponsor Caroline - just search “Caroline Chessum” on JustGiving. Here are a few words from the lady herself on why she chose Mind: “I’m pretty sure that we all know someone, family or friends who has been affected by mental health issues, or maybe have been affected personally. Too many people go unsupported and Mind does amazing work to make sure in people’s darkest times they have the support they need.” We think you will agree Caroline did an amazing job in smashing the challenges set as well as raising a significant amount of money for MIND. Well done Caroline - we think you are amazing. Happy 40th, love from Kate, Heather, Su, Louise, Liz & Leon. x

Where Do You Read

Yours?

Regular followers of the Stotfold News Magazine will recall each year we ask our readers to take a copy of their Stotfold News along with them on their summer holidays. Taking into consideration the current climate, this was a huge challenge this year - we didn’t hold out much hope for any pictures to fall into our inbox that’s for sure! For one Stotfold resident however, it seems the challenge was too good to pass up as he packed a copy of the Stotfold News Magazine inside his suitcase for not one, but two trips away this summer!

Buckingham Palace!

Gordon Lawrence was celebrating his birthday this year with a two-stop mini-break taking in the sights of London and then travelling down to Cornwall. Imagine our suprise when he sent us these these photographs with our publication taking pride of place outside both the London Eye and Her Majesty’s residence itself, Buckingham Palace! Not content with leaving it there, Gordon then sent us a photograph the following day of the magazine enjoying the sunshine on the beach at Newquay! The pictures certainly made us smile so we thought we would share them with all of you. Thanks Gordon, we had a great time on our virtual holiday!

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

Thank you for printing Helen Backhouse’s wonderful poem in the August issue of the Stotfold News Magazine.

We had no idea she is a poet, as well as her other gifts! She and husband Steve are well known and appreciated for their friendship and generosity, notably for their cooking skills, and son Jacob has joined them by doing some unusual cycling in aid of the Need Project. helping those in need of food and other necessities. We hope to see them all at church again in the not too distant future. We are so glad to have the ‘Stotfold News Magazine’ back!

Our thanks also go to our good and kind neighbours who have been so thoughtful and helpful at this difficult time of lock down, when our own family have been unable to visit, keeping us well fed with the shopping and up to date with the news with our daily newspapers. You are all very much appreciated and we are very grateful. God bless and thank you. Peter & Maurita Hornett

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

Important notice - to all customers of Captain Sparkle Window Cleaning.

As Glen is now retiring, I am delighted to be taking over all cleaning for his clients past and present. I am looking forward to meeting you all in the near future.

In the meantime, if you wish to contact me to discuss your requirements please do not hesitate to contact me on 01462 629302.

Dear Editor,

In the very old days people used to bow and curtsey to each other with respect.. In my early years during and after the war things were similar, everyone had respect and consideration for each other. Everyone had their front door keys hanging on string to be accessible through the letter box. Neighbours would drop in to check that everyone was ok.

When driving in the fifties, encountering someone else at a junction you would gesture to each other to go first. In the seventies, driving up Rook Tree Lane past The Chequers, turning right at the high street for the shops, a car coming from the left wanting to enter Rook Tree Lane would indicate for you to exit first‌ Today given the same situation.. cars from the left actually increase speed to make sure you don't exit first‌

Today lack of consideration is affecting the virus situation. Knowing my remaining years are few is not a problem anymore. The world now is not a nice to live in..

Kind Regards,

I just have this fear for my and others grandchildren Regards Alan H.

September Recipe Vegetables Galore!

with Trace Buggins, Head Chef at Mount Pleasant Golf Club Hello to all Stotfoldians,

I hope you’ve all enjoyed the “Eat out to Help out “ initiative over the last month , it was a massive success at the golf club which saw many new faces who were trying us for the first time and realising that we’re open to everyone.

Local chef Trace Buggins

Like many people during lockdown I took to the garden and tried to grow some veg ……… Well it seems I have done something right because I now have a glut of yellow courgettes, sweetcorn , runner beans and tomatoes! In this month’s recipe I’ll be using this veg to create a great little starter / light lunch dish ,which is quick simple and tasty. Any veg can be used in this recipe so if it’s broad beans, spinach or others , just enjoy using vegetables grown by your own hands (or of course from the shops!)

Tomato jam INGREDIENTS 500g ripe tomatoes ,225g sugar ,2 or 3 grinds of black pepper , Big pinch of salt ,1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice Bring a large saucepan of water to a boil. Using a paring knife, cut out the stem end of each tomato, then slice a shallow X in the bottom. Plunge the tomatoes into the boiling water until their skins loosen, about 30 seconds. Remove them with a slotted spoon and let cool. When cool enough to handle, slip off their skins. Discard the water, but save the saucepan for cooking the jam. Halve the tomatoes at their equator and gently squeeze out the seeds and juice. Cut the tomatoes into 1/2-inch (1.5-cm) pieces. Return the tomatoes to the saucepan and stir in the sugar, pepper, and salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently to ensure that the mixture is cooking evenly, until most of the liquid has cooked off. If foam occasionally rises to the top, skim it off with a large spoon. Remove from the heat and stir in the lemon juice. Ladle the jam into clean jars. Cover tightly, let cool, and refrigerate.

Courgette and sweet corn fritters 2 courgettes,2 corn on the cob, couple of spring onions, 75g plain flour,2 eggs, A handful of coriander,Sea salt, ground pepper, 2 tbsp oil.

Coarsely grate the courgettes. Put them in a sieve with a pinch of salt and squeeze together a few times to get rid of some water. Leave in the sieve to drain.Pull the leaves and silks off the sweetcorn cobs. Stand the cobs upright on your board and run a knife down them to slice off the kernels. Tip the kernels into a large bowl. Peel and finely slice the spring onions and stir into the sweetcorn. Tumble tthe courgettes into the sweetcorn bowl. Measure out 75g of the flour and add it to the bowl. Break in the eggs. Sprinkle in a little salt and pepper and stir well to combine. Set aside. Pour ½ tbsp oil into a large frying pan and bring to a medium heat. Add 4 heaped tbsp of the batter to the pan to make 4 fritters. Fry for 3-4 mins on each side till golden brown. Transfer to a warm plate and cover with foil. Serve the fritters warm on a bed of lettuce leafs (from the garden if you can ) spoon of tomato jam and finish with a soft poached egg for that late summer brunch

I hope you are enjoying our recipes. Any questions, comments, or requests please feel free to contact me at: stotfoldchef@gmail.com

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, At the time of writing this (at the beginning of August), our town is beginning to creep out of hibernation and I thought I would let you all know that the Stotfold Good Neighbour Group is still here for anybody that needs our support.

We have been quite busy over the lock down period trying to make sure that everybody has been ok and helping out where we could. Thanks to our super volunteers, we have been contacting all our regular clients by phone on an almost weekly basis, that makes somewhere in the region of four thousand phone calls since the middle of March, I hope the telephone companies are happy. We have also been collecting and delivering prescriptions to our ‘regulars’ and the extra 101 new clients we have gained since lock down. Our tally so far is 360 prescriptions in the 20 weeks of lockdown. It will be another month’s worth by the time you read this. Please note that we are quite happy to continue to support anybody who needs their prescription collecting until they are comfortable and feel safe enough to be able to go themselves.

We have also resumed some of our transport services. Whilst we are still not ready to transport people for purely social get-togethers, we are willing to take you to hospitals and clinics for medical appointments. Many appointments are still being conducted via video or telephone link, but if you do need to go in person and have no other means of transport, do give us a call on 07599 925 587 and we will try to help.

Conditions treated include spinal and extremity injuries, neck related headaches and sprains/strains.

We are NOW OPEN Our revised opening hours: Tues: 2pm-7pm Wed: 10am-1pm Thursday: 3pm-7pm Friday: 10am - 1pm Saturday: 10am-2pm

12

Lastly, we would like to remind the members of our Chair Based Exercise classes that we will contact them as soon as we know when we can resume classes and that they are all still on our lists. We are hoping that we may be able to restart in September, however everything is dependent upon the virus situation and the Government requirements at the time. Meanwhile, keep doing those exercises! We hope everybody stays well and look forward to seeing you all soon. Stotfold Good Neighbour Group

News from

Stotfold Watermill

New Stotfold Resident? Then welcome to a piece of history ….

Whilst excursions out have been limited for a few months now, there must have been scores of new houses built around that town and a good number of new residents moved in. To all of them we extend the warmest of greetings. With little to report this month it provides a good opportunity to let newcomers – and even some older residents – learn a little about Stotfold Mill. First recorded in the 1087 Domesday Book, as one of four, there has been a mill located on the River Ivel at what is now called Mill Lane for around a thousand years. We know little about the history of the first seven hundred years, but the Lords of Brayes Manor kept records of when the ownership of the property changed hands. Significant names were James Pestell, who rebuilt the mill after it was destroyed by a fire in 1824 and David Waldock, who installed a steam engine and built the chimney, which still stands, although the engine was later removed.

CLAIRE’S CAT SITTING Stotfold based cat sitting service Now in our 8th year!

Your cats looked after in your own home while you are away, giving you complete peace of mind.I am fully insured & can feed your cats once or twice a day. Other small animals can also be catered for.

The most recent family to own the mill was the Randalls. Having initially rented the mill from Charles Vaughan, it was purchased by John Randall in 1887 and on his death, it was inherited by his son Ebenezer. John and Ebenezer had great ambitions for the mill as an enterprise. Between them, around the end of the 1900’s, a hursting frame supporting four millstones and a 14ft water wheel, the widest in a UK corn-mill were installed. About the same time plans were drawn up for the construction of the adjacent roller mill which, completed in 1902. Regrettably, larger and more modern mills soon led to a Please call Claire decline in the demand for locally milled flour and Ebenezer’s sons, George and Sam, inherited a failing 07984 344 997 business. They managed to keep the mill running, largely producing animal feed, until 1966 when business ceased. The mill stood unused until 1992, when tragedy struck at Stotfold’s most historic and significant building. On the morning of 15th December 1992 residents of Stotfold awoke to discover that the mill had been burned to the ground, leaving just brick walls and a mountain of ash covering the collapsed machinery. A small, determined group of people set about gathering volunteers with the object of rebuilding the mill. A charitable trust was formed and funds were raised, but it was not until 1997 that ownership was obtained. Work then began in earnest to clear the site with volunteers spending their weekends shovelling and sieving ash to uncover the vital machinery. Within two years sufficient funds were secured and local builder, John Hyde, was able to start the rebuild, using traditional construction methods where possible. The complex process of restoring the machinery followed demanding the expert knowledge and skills of the engineers in the team. In 2006, after years of dedicated work by volunteers, the Stotfold community was once more able to see flour being produced in its mill. The fascinating story of the history and restoration of the mill, the labours of the community volunteers, can be read in the book ‘They’ll never do it’, available from the mill when it reopens.

If you are a new resident or have never been to the mill, sadly it is not open during the current pandemic but you can find out more by visiting the website www.stotfoldmill.com. Details of volunteering can be found on our website. STOP PRESS.….DECISION DAY 17/8 On Wednesday 17th August the Trustees and Major Events Team will be deciding if and how the Working Steam Weekend will go ahead on 10/11th October. See our website and social media for updates.

Letters to the Editor Just a quick note to thank you so much for the entry you made in the August Issue regarding mum's 100th birthday!

She was so surprised and the additional detail in your editor's letter pleased her no end, especially after all the lock-down and isolation she must have felt.

The prospect that she may be the oldest resident in the town brought a big smile and, needless to say, the Queen's birthday greeting card put the icing on the cake which was, incidentally, magnificently made by Box of Cakes! We now look forward to her next birthday!!

News from

Stotfold Salvation Army

Our halls are not currently open for worship or private prayer. We are worshipping together each Sunday morning at 10.30am online. The service is livestreamed on our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/stotfoldsa/) & our YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_k-WLJPD1_JsFHeA-dG0ng).

We are finding that many people are logging in to our Sunday morning meetings each week in their home environment where they can sing along with the recorded worship songs and hear the Bible message. There is overwhelming support for us to continue in this way until restrictions are eased. You are all invited to join us online, you can also find us by searching for “Stotfold Salvation Army on Facebook & YouTube. The recordings are available to watch any time after they have been livestreamed at 10.30am. While we are unable to meet at the hall, Messy Church continues on the second Sunday of the month by post and e-mail, so families are able to explore a Bible story and do the crafts and activities at home.

If you would like to receive a Messy Church at home pack please drop us an email (stotfold@salvationarmy.org.uk) & we will be happy to send you a pack. Please also keep an eye on our Messy Church facebook page for more details and pictures of the fun we get up to each month (@messychurchatstotfoldsalvationarmy). Small groups are meeting on three evenings via Zoom for Bible Study. Members and friends of the Salvation Army throughout the world are praying at noon each day for grace and strength in these unusual times and for all those in need. We continue to participate in the Churches Together Covid-19 Support Group for those unable to get their own shopping. Latest news from from Beale Bros

Sitting here in the cool breeze at the start of what promises to be another very hot day, reflecting on the past few months.

Since the shop front has been open again we have had some positive feedback about the measures we have put in place to make sure everyone remains safe. It has been a real pleasure to welcome customers into the shop and be able to have a chat once more. We are aware that there are still customers who are shielding and others are still wary about shopping in general. Any concerns, or any ways we can help, please give us a call and we will see what we can do.

We have been very busy with our BBQ products over the summer months, and now as the children are to return to school, it will be time to cook up some of your family favourites. We have a comprehensive list of most of our products that are available, you will find this displayed in the shop window. This has proved helpful to many customers.

We have selection of recipe sheets available for beef, pork and lamb dishes, please ask for some. Additionally we will be rolling out a couple of family meat packs, for £30 and £35, details of which can be found on our FB page, in the shop window or by giving us a call.

There is plenty of choice to be able to feed your family for a week with the products on offer.

We make the purchase of your next appliance easy!

We deliver, We install, We care!

16

It would be most helpful to us if you could contact us on our mobile number. We are often unable to answer the shop landline when we are busy, also it is tied up to our card machine.

Times are still very strange and uncertain, but as a community it has been encouraging to see how everyone has pulled together. Lets hope that everyone can remain safe and as well as possible as we live in new “normal” Until next time.

In the new term starting on Monday 7th September, we look forward to welcoming everyone back, especially our children and families who are starting in Reception later in the month.

The new opening plan and Parent-School Agreement should hopefully help everyone get used to the 'new normal' whilst encouraging our children back into learning in the safest possible way. At the time of writing this the newly adapted lesson plans for September are well underway to ensure the children return to exciting and creative educational activities. We have been working hard on our curriculum for this next academic year, looking at which key areas we have been unable to cover due to closure and how these can be incorporated into learning in the Autumn term. We are confident that teachers can address these areas when we return fully to school. There will be lots of learning with a wide range of new topics. We also hope to have some of our usual Autumn term events lined up, including our children's individual School Photographs, virtual Assemblies and Collective Worship and hopefully many more.. so much to look forward to! We look forward to updating you on how we got on in the October issue of the Stotfold News Magazine.

News from

Pix Brook Academy

As I write the weather has provided an “inferno” (as described in the press today) at PBA.

It is important to remember these hot summer days as we enter the new term, they so quickly fade in the memory when term starts in earnest. It is exciting to be considering the start of the new term, September is always slightly manic in schools and for us this year that is likely to be doubly so.

As with all schools we are still subject to the vagaries of the COVID-19 pandemic. Presently we are expecting to return to school with all pupils operating in year group bubbles and our plans have been in place for some time. What adds to our excitement, and to our challenge is the move to our new school building. This presents some fantastic opportunities in the long run but one or two logistical challenges in the short run. Willmott Dixon have continued to work throughout the summer and on some days over 150 staff are on site.

This has resulted in fantastic progress but as is always the case with any construction project as the completion date approaches the pressure really builds. The project was always designed to be delivered in phases and the occupation of the KS2 classrooms and communal facilities for September are in hand. Phase two will be delivered later in the half term and this will mean that we need to work around the contractors for a few weeks. We will welcome our new year 5 pupils to the school and this is undoubtedly a key moment in the life of any school. Pupils (and parents) will be nervous and excited. It is a time for new friendships to be formed and a new chapter in the lives of the young people joining the school. All the staff at PBA, teachers and support staff, understand the importance of a change in school and are ready to support. Initially a move can seem quite daunting but I know from years of experience that very quickly what seems new and somewhat unsettling becomes normal. Our pupils move from their lower school to a much bigger school, however they will initially be working in their own KS2 corridor with their teacher in much the same way as they did previously at their lower school and this will make the transition much easier.

In some ways the start of the term is going to be different for all pupils and staff. For some pupils this will be their first day back in school for a long time. Fortunately we were able to open to our year five pupils after the May half term and this means that the majority of pupils have at least been in school for a few weeks. It is also going to be exciting to have our new staff finally join the school, many of these were appointed before lock down and it seems ages ago that we were able to meet and talk about the new term. For those of us at Pix Brook Academy September provides a double relief, to be back in school working with pupils and to be in our new building provide all the excitement and enthusiasm needed to make a fantastic start to the term. I’m sure there will be plenty of surprises and unexpected events over the course of the next few months, for now it will be nice to welcome all to the new year and have something closer to the normal routines, albeit with the constraints imposed by COVID-19 in place.

All of us at Pix Brook Academy hope you have had an enjoyable summer, (at least the weather has been kind for those of us staying at home) and we look forward to showing you the school in the new term. Email: info@stotfoldnews.co.uk

Poppies Nursery

Welcome to a summer update. At Poppies Nursery we are very pleased to say we will be piloting a new scheme from September where we will be extending our hours from 7.45 a.m. until 6 p.m. for children aged two years and over. This new offer will run alongside our current sessional care where children can attend between 9 a.m. until 3 p.m each day. We hope this will provide additional support for families during these exceptional times which Covid 19 has brought to our doorsteps. Please contact us via email for further information or to book a space. (billpoppies@gmail.com) In addition, we would like to thank St Mary’s Academy for letting us use their ‘wild area’ from September. This area is directly behind our current Spinney and a gate will lead between the two spaces. We will be operating our nursery as fully as possible in the outdoors as this is recommended as the healthiest, safest environment at present for our nursery aged children.

During the summer break we have added an open sided classroom, lots of lovely logs for seating, a tree house, a hideout, camp, mud kitchen and a quarry to the area. The current ‘residents’ have safe places where little feet cannot reach them! Toad Hall, a Hedgehog Hotel, Bug Bungalow and Butterfly Boutique to name but few! Children will learn of the beauty of nature and how to respect both plant and animal life. Our forest school activities also provide children opportunities to learn about nature, create structures and designs using twigs, stones etc, and manage ‘risk’ while enhancing their well-being from being outdoors. Due to current restrictions we have created a virtual tour of both our nurseries and outdoor spaces and we are hoping to hold ‘open’ mornings where visitors may book a time slot. During these socially distanced visits, they will provide a ‘look around’ only as visitors will unfortunately not be able to handle equipment etc to maintain hygiene. If you would like to see the virtual tour or book a place on the open mornings please email billpoppies@gmail.com for Poppies or billpoppyfields@gmail.com for Poppyfields. Both our nurseries and after school clubs will be re-opening on 7th September and we look forward to welcoming our families back. Keep safe! See you next month for more news. Best wishes,

Joanne and The Teams

Stotfold Scout Group

Since my last time of writing the world has changed, as of 16th March 2020 all Face to Face meetings were put on hold, which had the knock on that the big events the group were going to attend this year were cancelled.

Up to lockdown the group had grown in numbers by 8%, numbers go up because of happy Beavers, Cubs and Scouts enjoying a great weekly programme with the ‘extras’ (such as camps), all this happens because of the dedication of the adult volunteers whether it is the Section Leaders overseeing this programme, the Assistant Leaders and Section Assistants helping with that delivery or the Committee members (and other non uniform volunteers) all supporting in one way or another. I would like to thank all the Adult volunteers for all you do for the Young People of Stotfold. Unfortunately some of the volunteers who have helped with the group have stood down their main roles during Lockdown, but will be carrying on supporting the group in other ways so I would like to thank these people for their continued service.

As restrictions are lifted returning to Scouts will happen in phases, the first of which will let us resume outdoor activities in small groups. Returning to face-to-face Scouts is voluntary for all young people, parents/carers and volunteers. Our restarting plans will follow all government rules, with guidance from Scouts’ UKHQ. Our priority is to keep young people and adults safe. An outline of how we will operate, following Scouts’ ‘COVID Code’:

•New control measures will be in place for all activities •Additional hygiene measures will be put in place •Social distancing will be observed •Group sizes will be limited •Adjustments will be made for young people who are vulnerable or affected by COVID

Stotfold Carnival

A huge thank you to Stotfold News reader Ray Auburn who contacted us through our Facebook page following the sad passing of his mother Maureen. Whilst sorting through items, Ray came across a collection of photographs spanning several years, owned by his parents Maureen and Barrie and featuring the Stotfold Carnival.

For those readers unaware, Stotfold held a carnival each year which attracted many people to the town. We thought our readers would enjoy looking at a selection of these photographs and for those amongst us that can remember, seeing if they can spot themselves either on the floats or spectating in the crowds. We ’d love to hear from you if you find yourself! There are a few familiar faces we know among these!

ry is unique.

i s n ' t j u s t y o u r s t a n d a rd s t a t i o n e r y he service was so personal and the range of ucts was vast, any idea we had they could quickly mock up something to fit the theme and the day.

We had so much more than just invitations and it made our day and venue decorations completely co-ordinated, something lots of people commented on. Tom & Hannah Contact:

Stotfold Football Club

At the time of writing we would normally have commenced the new season, but current guidance is giving a start date for league fixtures in the Spartan South Midlands League of the 5th September. This is dependent on the necessary risk assessments being lodged with the league. Clubs are also awaiting the answers to numerous questions that the league have posed to the FA. Pre-season friendlies were due to be played behind closed doors during August. Please see any updates on our new website.

Like other organisations the football club relies solely on volunteers to provide a good level of local football and going forward we require people to help us in the following positions: a Commercial Manager, a Media Officer (someone proficient in using social media would be a real asset), and additional people to help man the turnstiles, steward matches and serve refreshments during matches.

If you feel that you can spare a few hours a week and could fill any of these roles, and join our “football family”, please contact the Chairman Phil Pateman on 07825 133344 or email us on the address below. Following the merger with the Junior Club and our brand-new facility in Arlesey Road these are exciting times for the club, but we need your help for us to reach our goal of progression for all teams going forward.

News from Stotfold

Methodist Church

As l write this, plans and worries over schools returning this month are in the news. Worries over a second spike also. It’s in this context that Stotfold Methodist Church are working out how to safely open the building. It's a great responsibility, and legal requirement, to make sure that we don't increase risk of spreading Covid 19, and that we don't endanger any of the people who then use the building. So we've been agonising over doing right thing and how to do it between us, especially when we're feeling vulnerable too. My daughter bought me a lovely book for Father's Day, which I am sure many will know: “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse” by Charlie Mackesy. One favourite quote is about feeling vulnerable:

“When have you been at your strongest?” asked the boy. “When I have dared to show my weakness.” So we'll be “strong” and say that we're not confident or sure about exactly what we'll do. We hope that we can commence limited services again in September but we don't know what to do yet about other activities and we'll need help with knowing. As Charlie Mackesy’s book continues: “Asking for help isn't giving up,” said the horse. “It's refusing to give up.” I pray for God's help, for all the community groups and churches in Stotfold, that we'll have the wisdom and resources to know our way forward in the coming months of uncertainty. Revd Graham Claydon-Knights, Minister, Stotfold Methodist Church. Tel: 07340857386.

Local Planning Issues - A507 If you are running out of ideas for home schooling, or just want to show off your general knowledge, here is a science question: Q: What do a bicycle pump, a deodorant spray, and a fridge have in common?

Answer: they are all examples of how the temperature of a gas changes with pressure. The bicycle pump warms up as you increase the tyre pressure; the deodorant feels cool as it is released from the pressurized can; and a fridge works by compressing a gas, cooling the gas back down through the radiator on the back of the fridge, then allowing it to expand and cool down before passing through the fridge. All very interesting you may (or may not!) be thinking – but what has this got to do with local planning news? Well it helps to explain what is happening on the piece of land off the A507 roundabout close to Arcade Nurseries, which has been converted into a temporary works yard.

You may already be aware that there is a site next to it (behind the house) which is something to do with the national gas network. This is an “Above Ground Infrastructure” (AGI) site operated by Cadent, and links to various key pipelines in the area. These include high pressure and intermediate pressure pipes running north-south on the eastern side of Arlesey; and main feeds off these to serve Stotfold and Arlesey. Special valves allow gas to be fed into the local network at lower pressure, but this also results in the gas cooling, like a giant fridge. There is a risk this cooling effect could actually freeze the ground around the pipes, which could lead to the pipes being damaged. So the lower pressure gas has to be heated back up in the pipework above ground before leaving the AGI site.

Cadent are currently replacing all the heating equipment at similar AGI sites around the country, and intend using this land as a temporary works depot for the next 12-18 months, serving 9 additional sites in the east Anglian region. This extended use is (at time of writing) subject to a planning application, and concerns have been raised that all vehicles leaving the site (including some HGVs) are not able to access the A507 directly, but are being directed down through Arlesey and back up past Fairfield.

The High Pressure Pipeline is also significant because it forms a natural boundary for development proposals on the eastern side of Arlesey. Strict safety regulations limit construction activity close to the pipeline, and nobody is going to want a potentially dangerous pipeline running through the middle of a housing estate anyway. The site promoters for the new East of Arlesey development in the draft Local Plan have recently confirmed their proposal will be limited by the pipeline boundary (ref Local Plan document EXAM 113) A.Resident

Are You A Budding Photographer? We are always keen to receive photographs from readers taken in our local area. We are so fortunate to have a huge amount of pictures sent in to us - each and every shot we receive is saved in a file for use when we may need it in the future. Every month we try to make sure our front cover photograph is topical and is in keeping with the style of our magazine. If you would like to be in with a chance of having your picture on the front cover of a future issue here’s what you need to know about the pictures we require. All images must be taken within the local area. Pictures must allow for the magazine masthead across the top of the image area. Photographs should be reflective of the season (e.g Spring, Summer, Autumn) or be connected to a local event.. Images should be of good quality in order to remain crisp and clear once they are enlarged to A4 size.

Last month’s cover by Chris Nurse

We had so many comments about our front cover last month taken by Chris Nurse - we even had one lady request a copy so she could have a jigsaw made from the print! Thanks must go to Chris for not only giving his permission for this to happen but for also taking the trouble to print out copy for her to have on her wall! It was a beautiful shot!

An example of one of the lovely pictures we have received - this one from Patricia Clegg.

News from

Baldock Rotary Club

Baldock Rotary Club Donations 2019 – 2020

Baldock Rotary Club is pleased to report that through its fundraising activities between July 2019 and June 2020 it made charitable donations in excess of £26,000. The fundraising events organised by the club have been generously supported by the public and together with those activities undertaken by the hard-working members and friends of the club, enable donations to be made for the benefit of local, national and international charitable causes.

Donations to International causes, the choice of which is considerable, were made to ShelterBox Trust, Lend with Care, Aquabox and the Kenya Trust. A donation was also made in response to a national Rotary appeal to assist with disaster resources in Mozambique and the club also made donations to Rotary’s own international charity Foundation for its ‘End Polio Now’ campaign.Donations to National causes were made to Age UK and Mercy Ships. Some of the notable donations made to local causes during the year were to a number of our local schools, Baldock and Ashwell Scouts, Baldock Community minibus appeal, the MS Society (North Herts), Garden House Hospice, East & North Herts Hospitals Charity and the Young at Heart Club. President Paul Redwood commented that ‘Baldock Rotary Club is proud to have been able to make these substantial donations to such worthwhile charitable causes and would like to express its thanks for the support received from everyone in the community of Baldock, Stotfold, Ashwell and the surrounding villages’. He went on to say that like many community groups Baldock Rotary Club’s ability to undertake its normal fundraising activities has been severely curtailed by the coronavirus pandemic and this year it is being constrained in its ability to make contributions within the community. However, as soon as conditions allow it will resume activities to fulfil the Rotary motto of ‘Service above Self’.

The membership of Baldock Rotary comprises men and women who value their time together and are interested in “giving something back”. In normal times they meet regularly in a relaxed environment which fosters friendship and, aside from the Community endeavours referred to above, there is an active social programme whereby members and their partners meet, visit restaurants, the theatre and local places of interest, as well as holding a summer barbecue. Baldock Rotary would like to attract new members, so if you are the type of person who is in a position to “give something back” to the Community, we would love to hear from you. As referenced above our activities and aims can be summarised as; Fundraising for local charities-Support for the local Community -Aid for international disasters - Make new friends and have fun at our organised events If you are interested in any aspect of what Rotary has to offer please contact us on our website, address below, or contact our Membership Secretary, Paul Redwood, tel. no. 07999 350990, e-mail paul49redwood@gmail.com.

Join In To Help The Swifts By the time you are reading this some of our wildlife, particularly birds, will be about to start on their ‘summer recess’. The rigours of breeding will be over for most species (apart from the ubiquitous pigeons, some finches and assorted other species) so for most birds late July and August is the period when birds go into moult – replacing some or all of their feathers with new feathers for the autumn and winter and, in many cases, with a shiny new winter coat. As a consequence of moulting many birds partially lose the ability to fly or can fly only weakly so they tend to be very skulking and quiet – being unobtrusive is the best policy if you can’t fly very well! This period is also the time of least song in the whole of the year so, in general, In addition, our migrant birds are preparing for the rigours of a marathon trip back to the south of the Sahara, so many will be busy fattening up on protein-rich insects and seeds in preparation. Some migrants can put on a huge amount of fat (fuel) in preparation for the journey whilst others follow a different strategy – carrying extra fat can mean carrying more weight; not good if you are a willow warbler weighing roughly 8.7g (about the weight of 20 paper clips) and don’t want to carry extra ballast on-board. So, these birds travel light but make frequent refuelling stops on the journey at insect-rich places such as lakesides, scrub and flowery grasslands. The swift brings summer on its wings but may not be doing so much longer as its populations are in freefall across the UK with declines of 57% over the last ten years. The replacement of wooden soffits with plastic and the general sealing up of homes is contributing to the decline as is the huge losses of insects (swifts feed entirely on the wing by trawling the air for aerial plankton). We just simply cannot lose this amazing bird. There are things that can be done – putting up special nest boxes or swift ‘bricks’ would be a start. A Bedfordshire Swift Group has been set up to help people with swift projects and putting up boxes and a wonderful website ‘Swift Conservation – Keeping the Skies Alive’ has ideas, information and help for this summer-sky-bird. www.swift-conservation.org Steve Halton stevehalton@gmail.com
