From the Editor Welcome to August! Hopefully by the time you read this you will be enjoying all that British summertime has to offer! We hope that the weather is being kind - if you are escaping to somewhere hot and sunny please don’t forget to pack your copy of the Stotfold News Magazine and snap a picture of you reading it somewhere fabulous. We will be including these photographs on our social media and inside future issues of the magazine so don’t forget to take us with you!
Thank you to everybody that has been in touch to congratulate us on our brand new addition- the Arlesey News Magazine. It has been a challenge which we have thoroughly enjoyed and feel proud that our first issue has been welcomed so warmly by residents, local organisations and advertisers. You can collect a copy from the Post Office counter at the Stotfold Co-op each month if you are interested in finding out more.. Inside this month’s Stotfold issue you will see there is a strong flavour of volunteering requests. These requests come from all sorts of organisations, some asking for small amounts of help and others asking for greater. If you have any spare time and are interested in being involved in some of the wonderful organisations we have in Stotfold please do get in touch. Volunteering your time can be so rewarding, echoed by the article written especially for the Stotfold News by Janet Fielder on page 5 of this month’s issue. We hope you will try to get involved wherever you can, it really can make a huge difference.
We are aware that we always thank our delivery volunteers in this column but we are never more thankful than during the summer months! Juggling work commitments and the school holidays is tricky enough so we fully appreciate all the help we receive especially during this time. If you see your delivery person out and about on their round, please do stop to thank them as they do such a wonderful job of ensuring we reach every home every month and for that we are so very grateful.
We hope you enjoy your August issue, don’t forget, if you have anything you wish to include in future editions please get in touch with us during office hours using one of the methods of contact to the right hand side.
Until next month!

Dear Editor,
-Now taking beginners -Courses start in September -Places are limited, please enquire early
Now that the warm weather is with us, I was wondering if the residents of Stotfold, and now Arlesey, might like to give a thought to the welfare of our refuse collectors who do work hard due to cutbacks. If I am home, I always give the the offer of some water (mainly bottled) to keep them going (and hydrated). A small gesture that would mean a lot.................... I say this as I have done the job and speak from experience.. Kind regards Chris Hall

Why I Love Being A Respite At Home Volunteer by Janet Fielder Over four years ago I saw an advert in the Stotfold News Magazine for Respite At Home volunteers, and have never looked back. Volunteers visit, befriend and give support and advice to people in our community who are coping with terminal and life limiting illnesses, such as Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neuron, Cancer, Parkinson’s and debilitating strokes. I currently visit two families each week in this area, sometimes I visit for an hour or so, and other times a few hours, whatever is decided between myself and the families. Sometimes we sit in and chat, play games, or I read to them. Other times I hone my wheelchair pushing skills and we peruse the streets for fresh air, coffee and cake, or sometimes a drink in a local pub. During this time carers can have a break. As a carer, even attending their own medical appointments is a challenge if they don't have someone to stay with their loved one. I wish that I had known years ago, how little I could do for how much of a difference I apparently Respite at Home Volunteer make. Janet Fielder Families allow me into their homes and lives at sometimes very difficult times. They are kind and grateful, and I’ve seen and have been told of how my visits help. One lady told me, “If we had met before I became ill, I’m sure that we'd have become friends”. I believe this to be true, so for me volunteering has introduced me to lovely people I may never have had the fortune to meet otherwise.
In addition to supporting patients and their families, through the volunteer Manager I have access to a wealth of help and advice. I now know that I assumed a lot about disability and totally underestimated the many issues that arise for families. I have been made aware of the black hole that you can get caught in when trying to access medical and social services. and have often driven patients to hospital visits as services for transport in our area are often far from ideal. Part of what we do involves fundraising, recently raising money for lighter and more practical wheelchairs, which we loan to people that need them. Many carers are pensioners themselves and really struggle with weighty wheelchairs, we're very happy with the difference ours are making to those in need.
Once a month myself and all the volunteers meet up for a group meeting. We receive support and advice ourselves from our Volunteer Manager, and also from each other. Periodically we have speakers and occasional training to learn about some of the conditions that people have whom we visit. My experiences have assured me even more, that if we do a little to help each other then we make life a whole lot better for others in small ways.
RHV has been celebrating its big 20th Birthday by attending many events this year including the Stotfold Steam Fair back in May surrounded by a few Super Heroes and Super Villains! Please check out our Facebook page to see what we have been up to www.facebook.com/respiteathomevolunteers We are also looking for more volunteers in the Stotfold and Arlesey area. If you feel that you would interested in volunteering with RHV please email: repsiteathomevolunteers@aol.co.uk or call 01234 743063 and please leave a voice message.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, I’d like to recommend Jonny Garside Window and Door Repairs, based in Stotfold. We are in a fairly new property where numerous windows and our french doors had dropped. In addition, two latches were broken. Jonny was able to fix all of the issues with his many years of experience. I haven’t encountered many professionals who are so respectful of people’s homes, ensuring floors were covered and all mess was tidied afterward. All I had to do was to do keep him topped up with tea. As a local businessman myself, passing on positive recommendations is so so important therefore hope you’ll be able to kindly note this in your publication. Kindest regards, Joe Carter Dear Joanne.

Dear Editor,
News from
Stotfold Watermill
WELL IT MAY BE NOT AN INFLUX, BUT…..
You might have read in the Comet last month the fantastic news that there will once again be a Steam Fair and Country Fair in May, 2020. The report indicated that an ‘influx’ of new volunteers had come forward to save the event. Well it was hardly an influx, but we are incredibly grateful to the three or four people who have generously stepped up to offer their help and support. We still have a need for more volunteers to help in the organising and planning and by next May we will be looking for further help during the weekend and in the days before to ‘set up’ for what we hope to be a Teasel members help with the new compost memorable show. If you are able to give the event team a little of your time heap, using pallets kindly donated by Ryalls. in any way please contact us via our website, www.stotfoldmill.com. The event will be taking place on the weekend of 9th/10th May with the live music session, Live at the Mill on the preceding evening. You will be aware that Friday 8th has been now declared as a bank holiday to mark VE day, so we very much hope you will be able to round off your memorable day by joining us for a rousing evening in the beer marquee. July has been another very busy month at the mill. After June closed with the highly successful Summer Art Exhibition, we began our sequence of opening every Sunday afternoon for the rest of the summer (except Bank holiday weekend, 25th August). The popular Watercolour Workshop on the 13th July was fully booked but those disappointed might find places available on our website for the second session on 28th September. We were also pleased to hold the Stotfold Art Group Summer Exhibition on 20th/21st. Remember that work by this talented group of local artists are on display and for sale in the tea room and around the mill throughout the summer. The month ends with Pond Dipping, the first of our summer holiday activities for children, age 5-11. This is followed by Kitchen Science, Printing Workshop and Skull Island Adventure with morning and afternoon sessions. Vacancies for some of these still exist at the time of writing and further details with booking forms found on our website. Unfortunately, we had two incidents when visitors to the mill and the nature reserve had their car windows broken, which has necessitated us to erect warning signs not to leave valuables in parked vehicles. If anyone has information relating to either incident, we would be pleased to hear from them. Whilst reporting incidents at the nature reserve, readers might have heard that a fire broke out in a compost heap in the spinney adjacent to the car park on a Sunday afternoon. Our thanks to our local fire services from Shefford and Baldock who were in rapid attendance and also to Ryalls Building Supplies who generously donated wooden pallets to construct a new compost bin. The news that the Bedfordshire Steam Engine Preservation Society will not be holding their annual Fayre at Shuttleworth this autumn, means we are planning to make our Working Steam Weekend, on 5th/6th October, an even greater day out for the whole family, including some new and interesting attractions. With tickets costing far less than the former Shuttleworth event, now is the time to note the date on your calendar. The success of the weekend, as always, will depend on recruiting sufficient volunteers, who of course get free admission. Further details may be found on our website. To keep right up to date with news of Stotfold Watermill visit www.stotfoldmill.com, sign up to our e-newsletter, view our Blog, or follow us on Facebook, Twitter/Instagram. www.stotfoldnews.co.uk

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,
I would like to use your letters page to say a big thank you to the Stotfold Parents Association who organised the Festival Fun Quiz, and in particular for donating the proceeds to the Good Neighbour Group. As usual, the quiz was a great success and good fun with twenty or so teams battling to answer the devious questions. I think everybody who participated really enjoyed the evening and the fun brain challenge. My particular thanks go to Sheila Bundock for all her hard work, her cunning questions, and also to her team of trusty helpers. With the money donated from everybody’s efforts that evening, the Good Neighbour Group will continue to operate our telephone help line and support all Stotfold, Fairfield and Astwick residents in need of some good-neighbourly assistance. My thanks again to Sheila Bundock for her efforts and the donation to our funds. Wendy Craig Chair Stotfold Good Neighbour Group
Dear Joanne,
Parking on the bend at the bottom of Queen Street I feel is accident waiting to happen. I'm very concerned about the parking, and the disregard shown to other drivers. I have lost count of the number of times I have driven along Rooktree Lane and had to drive round the bend on the wrong side of the road to find a vehicle coming directly towards me down Queen Street. With St Mary's Academy situated in Rooktree Lane, will it take a child to be knocked over or worse before this situation is sorted out. The top of Queen Street, for saftey reasons, has double yellow lines, why are there no double yellow lines on the bend at the bottom of the road. I just hope that I dont have to say one day, I told them so, after a very serious accident.

Can You Spare One Morning Per Month? Are you looking for an opportunity to get involved and help others in our community? If so, the Wanderbus are looking for volunteer drivers to help them operate their 16-Seater Community Bus Services providing essential services to Shefford, Stotfold and all surrounding villages. The Wanderbus is totally volunteer run and provide a fixed route bus services, mainly weekday mornings, that take approximately 4 hours to Bedford, Biggleswade, Hitchin & Letchworth. The bus also runs a monthly service to Milton Keynes, St Neots and Welwyn Garden City. The Wanderbus is an essential service for many local residents who rely on the bus to get out and about. All volunteers for the service receive MIDAS training and an experienced driver to accompany them until drivers feel ready to go solo! Driving for the Wanderbus is very rewarding - regular drivers get to know their regular passengers and enjoy helping them.
All you need is to be aged between 25 and 70 with a normal licence with a D1 classification (see the back of your licence for details.) Initially they require reserve drivers, called upon to fill gaps due to holidays, sickness etc. In the future, Wanderbus will be looking to allocate regular fixed routes to reserve driving staff. If you would to get involved and help maintain this fantastic service call 0300-123-3023 Or email your details to thewanderbus@gmail.com

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,
I am a resident of Summerfield Court and I wish to make parents aware of their children's behaviour on the way to school. Summerfield Court has become a ‘meeting place’ for many children on bikes and scooters. The children are noisy as they practice bunny hops on the curb and are causing a great deal of disruption to residents with the banging and clattering, not to mention the hazard to incoming and outgoing traffic. They have been asked a few times not to use our car park as a place to meet in the mornings but they have ignored these requests as they are back doing it again the next day and after school.. The car park is not a playground, it is a dangerous place to play and could cause a potentially serious situation with the amount of traffic nearby. Please can I ask parents to advise/tell their children not to meet here but go straight to school instead. Kind Regards Summerfield Court Resident.

Off The Beaten Track...
St Guthlac Church, Astwick If you regularly drive through Astwick you will be familiar with the beautiful church nestled quietly along the main road situated just around the first corner. St Guthlac Church really is worth a visit if you are thinking of enjoying a local walk or passing on your way to walk the Green Wheel. We asked local resident Kate Dellar for some more information on this wonderful church, just a stone’s throw away from Stotfold... Astwick is one of the smallest parishes in England. It is joined with Arlesey, though is closer to Stotfold. A very picturesque village it covers just 665 acres, flanking the River Ivel. In the past, Stotfold and Astwick were separated by a marshy “no-mans-land”, but now they are linked by road. In the Middle Ages Astwick was referred to as Estiche, Estewike and Asswyk. Evidently the derivation come from ‘East’ and ‘Wyke’ a winding brook. The village was an established settlement in Saxon times as it is recorded in the Doomsday Survey of 1086 as a manor held by two mills in existence even then.
CHIMNEY SWEEP
Astwick church is one of eleven churches dedicated to Saint Guthlac who lived as a hermit on an island in the fens. St Guthlac was the son of Penwald, a minor prince from the Royal Mercian House of Icling. Born in AD673. The Church is a fragment of a much larger building; the process by which it has arrived at its present plan is somewhat obscure. The Church dates from the 11th Century; the tower is the oldest part of the building. The Church has undergone many changes over the centuries and it is difficult to trace its history. It still has a two-decker pulpit and some box pews, In the Chancel floor there are four slabs with inscriptions to children of Thomas and Elizabeth Cokayne of Astwick 1657-8, and there are also several modern monuments ranging from 1823 to 1866 to the Fossey Family. The church has one bell in the Western Tower. The Vicar of St Guthlac’s Church, Geoffrey Boult holds service every first Sunday of the month at 11.15am after he ministers at St Peters Church, Arlesey. Everybody is welcome. Why not pop along to their Bank Holiday event the ‘Mad Hatters Tea Party’ held at the church on August St Guthlac Church, Astwick 25th. See Page 34 for further details...

News from
Welcome to our August news..
Pix Brook Academy
I write to update you on the progress of Pix Brook Academy as we approach the last few weeks of the summer term. There have been a number of organisational and statutory milestones that have been met since Easter: Staffing. We have appointed the staff necessary to operate the school. I have been delighted with the response to advertisements and am confident that the new staff joining the school have the right combination of experience, enthusiasm and excitement about working with our first cohort of pupils.
Handy Henr y
OFSTED. We had a visit from Jason Howard an HMI on 11th June to assess the statutory requirements necessary to open the school, including a visit to the site. I am delighted to say that the meeting resulted in no actions or advisories. OFSTED are satisfied that the school can open. DfE. Last week a team from BEST joined me at the Department of Education to undertake the “Readiness to open meeting (ROM). This involved answering questions from a panel of civil servants to ensure that the plans for the school are in place and sufficiently aspirational to meet the expectations of the department. I pleased to say that the meeting went very well and the vision for the school was praised.
Build. The construction of the temporary site at Etonbury continues. The build is now beginning to complete the internal works. Induction Day – an exciting and important milestone for Pix Brook Academy as we hosted our first Step Up day for the September cohorts. It was a fantastic day, thoroughly enjoyed by pupils and staff who spent the day getting to know each other. Having nearly reached the end of term I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who have supported me and the school over the last few months. There are far too many to mention individually but suffice to say without their support we would not be at this point. It remains for me to wish all a restful and enjoyable summer break and I look forward to seeing you in September. Steve Adams. Principal. PBA

News from
Etonbury Academy. Welcome to our news for August.
As we fast approach the end of term, planning and preparation for our return in September has been a top priority. Although, that has not stopped the numerous activities taking place in and out of school for the students. Our Year 4 students coming up next year have already visited for various activities this term, and we were delighted to welcome them back for their official ‘step up’ day. The rest of the school also rolled up a year to meet their new Form Tutors and hear about the year ahead.
Duke of Edinburgh expedition
Over the last month the Year 5s have been studying Kensuke's Kingdom, ending this term with an activity day including a visit from ‘Safari Stu’, meeting various animals from the wild! Year 6 have been studying Victorian history, and will be having a trip to Wicksteed Park to celebrate completing their KS2 years. It has been a particularly busy time for events including ‘Race for Life’, Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver expeditions, Dance Show, GCSE Art exhibition, Art Race for Life enjoyed by trip to Clacton, Geography field trip to students and staff Cambridge and various sporting events and successes. Sports days were held in perfect conditions, and enjoyed by our staff and students. It was great to see so much parental/carer support and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. Well done to Saddlers House in KS3/4. Congratulations to Joe, Natasha and Gracie who were selected to represent Mid-Beds in track and field athletic events, achieving 1st to 3rd places in various events. Also, congratulations to Megan, Heidi and Rhys who all achieved awards in the UK Maths Challenge.
We have reached the end of an era for our Year 11 students who have completed their GCSEs , which was celebrated in style at their Prom night. It was a fabulous evening for staff and students, who all looked fantastic in their dresses and suits. We wish them all the very best for the future, and will be opening our doors for them on 22nd August for GCSE results day.
As the doors close for our students at the end of term, we will be opening them for various contractors to come in and support the refurbishment of Etonbury Juniors, ground works around the site, as well as cleaning the buildings. We will also be updating the school kitchen, which will enable us to provide more choice and exciting menus.
We are looking forward to welcoming new staff in September, including a wealth of experience joining the Leadership team to support Mr Evason in shaping Etonbury into an outstanding place for our students to learn and develop.

News from
Roecroft Lower School. An end of a wonderful year at Roecroft. I started my headship journey last September and I can honestly say it has been one of the proudest years of my life. I would simply like to close the year by saying a huge thank you to all of the community for your support and involvement over the year, it is hugely appreciated. The children are what make Roecroft so very special, each and every one of them works tirelessly over the year to do their very best academically, but, just as importantly, they always try to make positive decisions and live the values every day. I wish each of them every success as they move on, be brave in all you do and remember to treat everyone around you with kindness and understanding.
Ray Kilby with members of KilbyHouse 2019
An update from the Early Years Team: Over the last half term of the year the Reception children's learning was based around the topic 'Animal Magic'. We had caterpillars in the classroom and learnt about their life cycle and the children were very excited to observe the changes the caterpillars went through. We went on our visit to Woburn Safari Park which the children thoroughly enjoyed. Everyone had a fabulous day, seeing lots of different animals and going on a coach with their friends. We have been doing a lot of work on transition and preparing the children for Year 1. The children had the opportunity to visit their new classrooms and meet their new teachers as well as writing a letter to ask lots of questions. To celebrate the end of the children's first year at school we had a lovely Teddy Bear's picnic. The children sang lots of songs to their parents and carers and enjoyed spending time with them in school. During this half term we have also welcomed our new children who start with us in September. Everyone has had the opportunity to visit school and spend some time in the classrooms, meeting staff and becoming familiar with their new surroundings. Home visits will take place for these children in September and we are all excited to begin working with them and their families. Have a wonderful summer break. Mrs Cross

News from
Fairfield Park Lower School As you are reading this article we will be beginning our summer holidays and hopefully enjoying the summer sun.
We are very proud of all of our pupil’s achievements this academic year. It has been a busy month with lots of transition events for all our children, meeting their new teachers for next academic year and for our new starters in Reception and Nursery. In July all Year 4 children also attended the transition days at their chosen middle schools, great feedback was received and a buzz of excitement came back into the classroom.
We had a fabulous talent show enjoyed by our school community and parents of those that took part! Sports days across all cohorts were a great success, there was a super atmosphere which was warm and supportive. All children took part in a wide range of sporting activities and thoroughly enjoyed their sports mornings or afternoons. Our Year 4 leavers also enjoyed their ‘Leavers Party’ which was organised by their parents – Thank you. In the final week of term, the Year 4 leaver’s assembly left not a dry eye in the house! We wish all our Year 4 children all the very best at middle school. Have a safe and happy summer holiday. We wish our Year 4 Leavers lots of luck at their new middle schools and look forward to welcoming everyone back to school after the summer break. Although the pre-school is closed for the summer break, our holiday club continues to be busy with record numbers of children attending. They have been enjoying a variety of activities and experiences including using the new outdoor play equipment (waterwall, astro turf and playground markings) which was purchased with the monies received from the Coop membership scheme. Before we know it, the new term will be upon us. We re-open our doors for the new term on Wednesday 4th September. We look forward to seeing the children who will be returning to us after the summer break and hearing about their summer antics, together with welcoming lots of new children who will be starting their Pippin journey, we look forward to getting to know them and their families. The ticket price includes entry and a platter of nibbles, please bring along your own drinks for the evening! This is an opportunity for parents/carers to hear more about what has been happening at the pre-school over the past year and our plans for the year ahead. News from Stotfold Junior Football Club In July we had our yearly Stotfold Juniors’ tournament at the Roker Park ground and it was a huge success. Great football was played over three days and involved age groups from U7’s to U13’s.
Over 100 teams competed and all funds raised go back in to the club to support all the Stotfold Juniors teams. Tom has completed his 72 hole golf challenge for Macmillan Cancer support. The ‘4 Horsemen ‘as his team were called raised around £400 for this worthy cause. They started at 4.30 a.m. and completed the 72 holes at 9.30 in the evening, experiencing a whole range of weather conditions during the day, wind, rain, and even some sun. Thank you to our customers who donated to the event.
Sausages, burgers and pork ribs are very much the order of the day at present and we are still busy fulfilling orders. We know our sausages are taken to France and various parts of the UK. If you haven’t yet sampled any of these, please do come and find out what is on offer. We have had several enquiries about goat meat, and have found a source for this. We are eagerly awaiting our first delivery, if this is well received it may turn out to be something we regularly stock. Follow our Facebook Page for updates. We have taken the decision this year to close the shop for a week, so that Tom, in particular can take a holiday. So we will finish trading at 1 p.m. on Saturday 27th July and re-open on Monday 5th August at 8.30 a.m. We will have our usual late night opening on Friday 26th July until 6 p.m.
Be sure to stock up your freezers before this time. Why not take advantage of our 6 items for £30 to feed the family. Enjoy the rest of the summer break.

Cows are nosy and may come to investigate, especially if you have a dog with you Last year there were more than 700 cases of dogs worrying livestock
LOVE YOUR
COUNTRYSIDE
Remember, cows can be protective of their young
Top tips to enjoy your countryside • Keep the countryside beautiful and take your litter home • Leave gates as you find them and follow instructions on signs • Keep your dog close, under control and on a lead around cows and sheep • If you are threatened by cattle let your dog go - it will run to safety • Don’t panic or run if cattle follow you - stay calm and walk quickly and quietly around
Stick to the path to avoid damaging crops if you’re walking through fields
the herd • Avoid getting between cows and their calves - find another way round the herd and rejoin the footpath as soon as possible • Be careful not to damage growing crops and stick to the path if walking through fields • Don’t forget to clean up after your dog
