From the Editor Welcome to our June issue!
This month we have become obsessed with watching the beautiful family of baby swans down at the Mill and nature reserve - we were so pleased when local photography enthusiast Nikki Lane managed to capture the perfect shot for us to use on our June front cover, thank you so much Nikki! If you haven’t had chance to see them for yourself do pop down and see if you can spot them - just be sure to give them space as swans can be very protective of their young. We have been super busy this month with local articles and we hope you enjoy the ones we have selected to use for this issue - often we get sent more than we have space for, but we will always get round to featuring them as soon as we have room. We hope you enjoy reading all about Samuel this month and his marvellous challenge to raise funds for a specialist premature birth charity - we think he is just brilliant!
June 2021
Thank you also to Wendy Craig of the Stotfold Good Neighbour Group this month who has taken the time to write us an excellent article featuring all of the locations for the defibrillators situated in and around Stotfold and Fairfield- Do you know how many we now have in total? Try and guess....you may be surprised. Wendy will tell you all about them and where they are situated on page 14 of this month’s edition.
We are incredibly excited this month to welcome local Vet Anna Marshall=Brown to the Stotfold News Magazine team with her brand new Vets questions and answer column. Each month, Anna will be answering your pet health queries and providing you with valuable help and advice - You can find more details on page 17 of this month’s edition where you’ll also find the first of our local pets to be featured as part of our ‘meet the pets’ feature. We want to see your pets so please do get in touch! Until next month when we will be looking ahead to summer and hopefully some more settled weather (fingers crossed!)

Dear Editor, It was good to read in the April issue the feature on the Old Wool Shop in the High Street. I cannot write a historic account of my home, only that The Crofts, back in 1960 was a single narrow country lane leading from Church Road and into the High Street with a few Crofters cottages in a poor state & falling down. The builder cleared the site & built 6 pairs of 3-bedroom semi-detached houses, plus one detached house. We moved into our new home on May 7th 1961 and have been there for 60 years. From the back garden we over-looked a large meadow which was Alex Smith's field (old Stotfold residents will remember that I'm sure). This of course became Alexander Road. The front of our house faced Shepherds Wood Yard, employing a number of workers & was a thriving business. When it closed a proper road was built and more houses were erected. Stotfold has changed so much & I agree with the comments 'STOTFOLD IS FULL'. Roads, schools, the Doctors Surgery & other facilities are under pressure. Please leave Stotfold alone. Jennifer Legate

Letters to the Editor James’s Carpentry & General Handyman Service
Dear Editor, May I follow on from Sue Sparks letter in the last edition of the magazine regarding AJB fencing. A huge thanks to Andy and Sean who replaced our back fence after it had blown down in the winds. Andy came to quote on the time/day he said he would. He arrived to erect the fence at the time and day he said he would. Both Andy and Sean were polite, hard working and also helpful in moving our old fence for my husband to keep. I would not hesitate in recommending AJB fencing. B.Virgo Dear Editor, For sale Mobility Rollator - brand new never used with seat . £50 Stotfold For more details please contact 07765 251 510

Dear Editor, I was recently asked if I would accept some help from a young man to enable him to gain his Bronze & Silver "Duke of Edinburgh" award. He explained to me he had to further his Sports ability, improve his musical talent, continue his caring & helpful nature & expand his orientating skills for approximately six months. It has been a pleasure to accept his weekly donations of help with weeding, grass cutting, painting of the outside toilet, sorting & recycling. One week I was lucky enough to receive some homemade cup cakes which enabled me to indulge in 'tea & cake' each afternoon - lovely!! Thank you George and well done to you for all your hard work in securing your Awards. Congratulations and Best Wishes for the next part. Jennifer Legate

News from
Stotfold Watermill
Welcome back at last …….
It is with the greatest pleasure that we are able to welcome all our visitors back to Stotfold Mill – subject, of course, to any last-minute government announcements.
Last month the mill trustees met and agreed that we will begin re-opening the mill on Sunday afternoons starting from June 27th. We will endeavour to ensure the safety of both our visitors and our volunteers by taking one or two precautionary measures that recognise the limited space in the mill. Usually we do not become overcrowded but if at any point the number of visitors exceeds our expectations, we might ask people to delay their entry by taking a short stroll in the nature reserve. Guides might also request that other floors are visited if one is very busy and a one-way system of movement might be necessary. In general, we anticipate that visitors will decide for themselves what precautions to take so that whilst volunteers might wear face masks or shields, we leave it to the public to make their own choice. In the tearoom screens have initially been installed and separate entry and exit routes might operate for the safety of both staff and customers. We hope that this will not impair the efficiency of the service and we look forward to serving our excellent afternoon teas as were enjoyed in the past. Access to the shop might be restricted but we will ensure that purchases can be made so that all those desperate to restock on flour and porridge oats can be catered for. Our miller Ray Kilby is busy ensuring we have a plentiful supply in hand.
With the indication that life is approaching something like normal, we are planning to hold the Working Steam Weekend on 9th/10th October. Having missed our May event, we are aiming to make this weekend an even bigger attraction than usual in the hope of drawing in larger crowds. In addition, it is hoped to hold our Live at the Mill evening featuring local live music groups in the beer marquee on the evening of Friday 8th October. Watch out for further details of both events in local news and on our website, www.stotfoldmill.com. As things start to open up at the mill we are once again putting out a call for people to join our teams of volunteers. Details of all the different opportunities to involve yourself in this sociable local enterprise, so much a part of the Stotfold community, can be found on our website. One particular need, now that we are able to draw in visitors again, is for one or more people to help advertise and market the mill. Please consider how you might help to bring the mill back to life as a major place to visit in the Home Counties. With so much good news and events to look forward to it is somewhat depressing to report on the vandalism that has been taking place in the nature reserve, particularly on the weekend at the start of May. Many of you will have read on local Facebook pages, that a group of young people decided to barbecue in the picnic area and not only chose to litter the site, but actually destroyed a table by setting it alight. Fortunately, timber to restore the table has been very generously donated by local company M J Ryalls Building Supplies Ltd. Our sincere thanks to them. This follows on from previous occasions when damage was done to the bird hide resulting in it being taken out of action at the present time, which is a pity as it provides an excellent view of our swans and their eight cygnets. The trustees have decided that they cannot allow this mindless and wanton vandalism to deprive the community of the opportunity to enjoy the pleasure of the reserve. Two immediate actions to be taken are to monitor the site 24/7 by the installation of CCTV and also the erection of strong barrier fencing on the Baldock Road edge of the site. The Established 1971 CCTV cameras are in place and already videos have been passed to the Bedfordshire police. The fencing alone has been quoted at £4000 and comes at a time when we have had very little income for over a year. We would ask any visitors to the nature reserve to enjoy a picnic by all means but not to light fires or barbecues, which are of course inappropriate and banned. If you see any signs of vandalism or undesirable activity, please contact the police on 101 who are supporting us when available. 6

Peter’s Lockdown Weight
Loss Journey
A little over twelve months ago Peter decided to take action over his weight and joined Slimming World in Stotfold run by Dawn Breacher. With classes taking place through Zoom and regular weigh-in sessions conducted remotely, Peter persevered with changing the way he ate and decided to take action in making better choices wth his diet.
Peter before he made the decision to start his weight loss journey
Dawn told the Stotfold News Magazine “this last year has been incredibly tough for everyone and even more so for those people making the decision to lose weight and change the way they eat.” “Peter was incredibly motivated from the start of his journey and showed great determination and focus even though we were unable to meet face to face in the usual class setting.” “By steadily changing his eating habits and introducing healtier options, Peter proved that lock down was infact a great opportunity to focus on changing your diet for the better.” In total, Peter manged to lose an Amazing 5 stone 7lb throughout his journey and has now found freedom from the habits and pitfalls that previously held him back.
Peter is delighted that he is no longer having to use his sleep apnoea machine at night and amazingly he is no longer diabetic.
Classes are now back face to face so if you would like to join Slimming World on a Tuesday afternoon at the Greenacre Centre then give Dawn a call on 07515557803 as booking in is essential during the current Covid regulations.

Etonbury Academy
We had hoped to welcome a little more sunshine than we have had so far, but it hasn’t hampered any of our extra-curricular outdoor clubs. The Summer season of sport brings cricket, rounders and athletics. Junior Cricket, Dance, Athletics and Football clubs have been a joy to watch.
Students achievements in school, as well as outside of school, are part of the Senior Leadership Team updates each morning and all school staff really enjoy hearing about them and giving our students the recognition they deserve. Congratulations to Hayden for his fantastic History work, Esme for her charity work and Alice, Hannah, Evelyn, Zahra, Alesha and Emily for achieving word millionaire status for their amazing efforts in reading. Our Artists and Photographers have really excelled in all year groups, our PE students have been braving the hurdles and the Juniors bakers have been making yummy pizzas with Mr Ian Bodger. You can see their work on our social media pages. We love that there is something for all our students, they don’t have to be the best, just do their best and enjoy it. Dr Stewart Tolley, from the University of Oxford joined us for the first Brilliant Club session, providing a university-style history lesson for our high achieving Year 7 and 8 children based on their current research. It really was brilliant! Thank you to Mrs Alice Wagstaff-Sherwood for leading this excellent project for the school, we are looking forward to rolling further topics out to students this year. Transitioning into Etonbury Secondary School is a focus for our Year 6 children this term. Although they have benefitted from their own building and play times, their gradual transition is made so much better for knowing the school, having occasional lessons in the main school, as well as using the dining room and study centre. We will soon be starting their integration with specialist lessons in Design and Food Technology, Media in the Apple mac suite, Science in the laboratories and so much more. Our Year 4 children moving up to Year 5 at Etonbury in September have received the fantastic news that they will be part of an amazing school project, and will receive their very own Google Chromebook to keep in touch with us before they start, and then go on to do some of their homework online in their new term with us. All our year 4s will be presented with these when they come in on their open evening on 29th June 2021. We can’t wait to see them, and we are looking forward to them being part of such an excellent project.

Following a rigorous interview process, many of our ambitious staff team will be sharing their expertise across all BEST schools having been awarded Trust Leads in their field. We are incredibly proud of our Etonbury staff talent, and these appointments are an excellent reflection of our academic strength. We have welcomed Councillors from both Stotfold and Arlesey to discuss how our children can support them with their work. PixBrook Academy
The start of spring and its all go at PBA. The summer term is always a great time to be working in schools, there is something about the longer days and warmer weather that creates a certain nostalgia for schools.
We look back on our school days and remember the things we did outside the lessons and it is one of the real effects of the last year that this has been the dramatically impacted on by the restrictions. Whether that is the sporting fixtures, clubs and teams or just being together with friends the last year has really impacted on these things for young people. With the announcement that more restrictions are being lifted we are looking at how we can reintroduce those elements to the school. In much the same way as there is pent up demand for holidays there is plenty of the same for activities and it looks like September will be full on in schools. It has been exciting to plan for next September. A large number of new pupils will be joining the school and to see the school grow from 51 pupils in September 2019 to over 400 in September 2021 will be fantastic. Change of this scale is not straightforward but the commitment of staff, enthusiasm of pupils and support of parents provide all the ingredients needed to make this genuinely exciting. Over the next few months we have a programme of events to finally be able to show the school to the community. We have our step-up day where not only will the new pupils spend a day in school but also our current pupils will be introduced to their new teachers and classrooms. For our inaugural body of pupils moving to the secondary phase of their schooling this will be quite a moment. This group of pupils have almost doubled in size since the school opened and to see them grow and mature has been a privilege.
We have also started to work on the development of the school in terms of facilities. It was always going to be a challenge to take receipt of a large secondary school building without the resources sufficient to fully kit it out. It requires careful planning and one area where we are looking to develop is the foyer of the school. This is going to include some images and words designed to capture the essence of the school’s ethos: to educate the socially responsible citizens of the future. We have asked pupils to think about some quotes they would like to include and as always they have surpassed themselves. Picking some will be a challenge but if we can remember the words of Anne Frank “how wonderful that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world” then we should be on the right track.

Poppies &Poppyfields Nursery News Welcome to our news! Last month, as the weather warmed up our outdoor space has been buzzing! At Poppies, our ‘Spinney’ and ‘Wild Wood’ have hosted forest school activities and our ‘builders yards’ have seen wonderful creations and obstacle courses evolving! We continue to look at the changes in nature around us and are looking at weather patterns. At Poppyfields our beautiful new canopy (Thanks again to SJS Carpentry), is being decorated with beautiful mobiles made from natural materials and this also supports children’s understanding of the weather as they blow in the breeze! They too have created amazing structures in their builders yards.
Both nurseries have enjoyed exploring fruit and vegetables, learning the properties of each, tasting, smelling, weighing and printing with them. Both nurseries follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and much of this is delivered in the outdoors, weather permitting! Children’s well-being is high outside and opportunities are endless! Our after school club Bubbles on both school sites have been fun with children enjoying a new drone activity, making books and having lots of fun outdoors. We are pleased to confirm that sessions for September can now be booked. At Poppies, this includes full days 7.45 a.m to 6 p.m, or sessional care/education for all nursery children and, currently, Reception children attending St Marys Academy. For children starting St Marys Academy in September we are available for wrap until your child starts school full time. At Poppyfields, we offer full days 8 a.m to 6 p.m, or sessional care/education for all nursery children and wrap, for children attending Fairfield Park Lower School, Dickens Boulevard site. This includes Squirrels, Reception and Key Stage 1. We are also offering wrap to children starting school in September before they start school sessions. At both sites, children can access the 15 hour Universal funding for ‘free’ places, and if eligible the 30 hour offer. For information or to book a place please contact us on billpoppies@gmail.com or billpoppyfields@gmail.com. Many thanks to our families for their continued support and understanding during these difficult times. it really does make a huge difference!

In the February edition of this magazine I thanked the Eleemosynary Charity for awarding the Good Neighbour Group a grant for the purchase of a new defibrillator. I am pleased to report that this is now in place on the outside of the Memorial Hall in Hallworth Drive. This venture is fully supported by the Town Council who have agreed to be responsible for the maintenance of the equipment. Stotfold is now in the fortunate position of having reasonable coverage for the whole of our community, however this is only of use if we all know where these life saving devices are located in an emergency. Many people are probably unaware that there are 13 defibrillators within the Stotfold and Fairfield area with one more hopefully being commissioned in a few months’ time. The Stotfold locations are marked on the map. Four are located on the outside of buildings and are accessible for use by the public at any time. They are marked with a red pin on the map. They are to be found at: • The Memorial Hall, Hallworth Drive. SG5 4HP • Stotfold Town Council Greenacre Centre, Valerian Way SG5 4HG, • The Kings Baptist Church, The Green, Stotfold, SG5 4AN, • The Barn Hair Studio, 12A Queen Street, Stotfold, SG5 4NX, 01462 835611 To access these defibrillators in an emergency, call 999, give details of the emergency and the location of the unit. The operator will assess the emergency, despatch an ambulance and give you the access code for the Defibrillator box. All the local schools have defibrillators and trained staff however, Pixbrook Academy do not expect to have theirs commissioned until the new academic year. As they are located inside the buildings the defibrillators are only accessible to help in public emergencies during term time school hours. They are to be found at: • St Marys Academy, Rook Tree Lane, SG5 4DL, 01462 730343 • Roecroft Lower School, Buttercup Rd, SG5 4PF, 01462 730336 • Etonbury Academy, Stotfold Rd, SG5 4XS 01462 730391 • Fairfield Lower School Dickens Blvd, Fairfield Park, SG5 4FD • Pixbrook Academy, Arlesey Rd. SG5 4HB, 01462 416243 available soon In addition, four other defibrillators are inside the following buildings and are available during their opening hours. • Larksfield Surgery, Arlesey Rd, SG5 4HB, 01462 732200 • Co-op Store, Mulberry Close, Stotfold, SG5 4NL, 01462 733797 • Stotfold Mill, Mill Lane, SG5 4NU, 01462 734541 • Stotfold Football Club, Arlesey Rd SG5 4HE 01462 730765 • Tesco Express, 70 Dickens Blvd, Fairfield Park, SG5 4FD 0345 671 9397 Defibrillators can save lives. We are lucky in our town to have so many, so in an emergency, please don’t hesitate to use one.

6 Year Old Samuel’s 140km Challenge After close friends of Samuel’s family gave birth to premature twin boys in October at only 24 weeks, Samuel age 6, decided that he wanted to do something to help the amazing charity that helped the twins and their family through a challenging time. The boys, both home and doing really well were born 16 weeks early and needed lots of care and attention to help them through their early days.
Samuel’s Mum Vicky told the Stotfold News Magazine “Samuel was incredibly keen to raise money for the charity (Support of the sick newborns and their parents, SSNAP) that helped our friends whilst they were in hospital.”‘
“He has set himself the challenge to cover 140km as the twins were in hospital for 140 days. He is planning to achieve this challenge with a mixture of cycling, walking and running all within 16 weeks to mark the amount of weeks the boys were born before their due date.” Samuel having great fun completing his challenge!
“He’s full of enthusiasm at the moment and is enjoying getting out and about and raising such a lot of money.” “He has raised over £700 so far and we’re only two weeks in!.”
The link to Samuels JustGiving page for more information is: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/samuelsharpe140
We look forward to hearing how much money Samuel manages to raise and wish him all the very best of luck with his challenge! We think he is ace!

Our children have experienced many different enriching opportunities since the last issue and it's been a pleasure to see inquisitiveness and hear their fantastic questions. Ukuleles and samba beats have been playing down the corridors thanks to our Year 4 and Year 2 children respectively enjoying the challenge of learning something new and being inspired to be future musicians. Children in Year 1 have virtually been off to Australia to explore the landscape and learn more about life Down Under; there's been aeroplane and rocket role play areas that have encouraged imaginative play and a fascination with all things flying and out of this world in our Early Years. The facts that the children have shared have been amazing! Physical activity has continued in earnest with Daily Miles for all year groups - children (and some staff members!) have improved their stamina and overall fitness levels through doing this daily activity. Not only did this help physically but also with mental wellbeing too. Our children also scooted, rode and walked our school into First Place out of the schools in the Central Beds area in the Big Pedal competition run by Sustrans - well done to all who participated!
The whole school also entered the Royal Mail "Design a Stamp" competition in recognition of the heroes of the COVID pandemic. Children took the opportunity to reflect on all the different heroes and depict them on a stamp. We currently await to hear the results and are proud of all the ideas that were put forward. We are very excited to announce that we will be opening our nursery class at our Ruskin Drive site in September 2021. The room, and a lovely outdoor area, has been waiting for us and we have now had the green light from the governors and CBC to go forward and set up a nursery class, following our Fairfield Park Lower School Early Years ethos.

News fromRoecroft
Lower School
Welcome to the June news from Roecroft Lower School.
Firstly, I hope you all enjoyed the Easter period and managed to enjoy meeting friends and family safely in your gardens at home, the changes really have been welcomed, if not poorly timed with the very peculiar weather we experienced over May.
Over June in school, we will be looking forward to lots of our familiar celebrations, such as our Dance Morning and various sporting events. They will be a little different in nature, mainly due to the lack of an audience, but I have no doubt my staff and the children will make up for it and ensure everyone gets cheered on and celebrated. It is wonderful to be enjoying a full curriculum and to have all our children in school. It has been hard not to reflect on this time last year and remember how different it all felt. We have all come such a long way. With warmest wishes, Mrs Cross
Early Years Foundation Stage Update In Reception we have been very busy reading lots of books and stories over the last half term during our topic 'Read All About It!' We started by reading 'Little Red Riding Hood' and received a letter from Mrs Red Riding Hood asking us to make some 'Wanted' posters to display around our classrooms to find the wolf. We also did some investigations into finding a good material that we could use to make a waterproof cloak for Red Riding Hood to keep her dry on any more walks through the forest. We then moved on to looking at ‘The Three Little Pigs’, re-telling the story, making our own pigs and wolves and acting it out with our friends. We read 'The Gruffalo', which is always a big favourite! We loved painting pictures of the characters from the story, doing lots of rhyming and Gruffalo description activities as well as designing our own terrible creatures from the woods! We looked at the story of 'The Jolly Postman' and really enjoyed writing letters to our friends and walking to the post box to post them. The postman delivered them to us all and we all very excited to receive some exciting post to read with our class.
We have also looked at the story 'Handa's Surprise', where we did some work around healthy eating and foods from different countries and cultures, as well as ‘The Gingerbread Man’. Over the next half term our learning will be based around the topic 'Animal Magic'. We will have a special delivery of some caterpillars into school so we can learn about their life cycle and how they change into butterflies.
We will be investigating lots of different animals and minibeasts and even going on our own bear hunts and making some watercolour paintings from the story!

News from
St Mary’s Academy
The summer term is now well underway, with June proving to be quite a busy month for us. Our extra-curricular clubs are back up and running with all years having the opportunity to join in. Currently our Year 1's are loving learning to dance and our Year 2's are learning to play tennis and do gymnastics!
Our Year 3's can participate in Multi Sports and are learning to play African drums and our Year 4's can learn Spanish. As well as this our Year 1 children have made bread in school as part of their 'Little Red Hen' topic and they will soon be enjoying a traditional English tea party as part of their Geography topic, exploring the different countries within the United Kingdom. Our Year 3's have learnt to 'mummify' a tomato as part of the ancient Egypt English topic.
We have also held our first ever virtual parent consultations and the ever popular creative arts week! All very well received and run without issue! As always please view our website for up to date pictures and news! We are hoping to hold an event in June centred all around our Year 4's as they have missed a number of trips and activities due to the pandemic andsubsequent lock downs and restrictions. Each class will also be posting a summer song on-line for our families to enjoy in place of our annual School Summer Concerts. Our transition arrangements for children due to start school with us in September are also being held in June and July and our sports day and Year 4 leavers events will round off another very strange year! We'd like to take this opportunity too to say a huge thank you to the Open the Book team who have been recording 6 weekly assemblies for us each term over the last year. We have missed them coming into school but their recordings have been thoroughly enjoyed by the staff and children. Until our next instalment please stay safe and enjoy the warmer weather!
Conditions treated include spinal and extremity injuries, neck related headaches and sprains/strains.

Housebuilder Provides New
Bike Sheds
Pupils cycling to school at Etonbury Academy have a new secure home for their bikes, thanks in part to a £1,000 donation by housebuilder Taylor Wimpey, South Midlands. The developer reached out to the school and asked for ways in which they could help improve the local community, with their Aspen Gardens development in Stotfold being not far away.
The school shares access to the bike sheds with Pendleton Sports Centre and are accessible to the local community. Unfortunately the old bike sheds were in need of repair and the school wanted a more secure place for pupils to leave their bikes. Joanne Young, vice principal at Etonbury Academy, said: Etonbury Academy has a significant number of students who bike to school and therefore providing a secure location for the bikes to be stored during the school day has been a key priority for the school. The bike sheds being located on the school site but just beyond our perimeter fencing allows the wider community who use the Pendleton Sports Centre to benefit from the upgrade during the evenings and weekends.”

“The donation from Taylor Wimpey has enabled the school to replace the existing plastic covering that was worn, discoloured and damaged replacing it with a steel mesh covering that has significantly improved the aesthetics of the bike sheds, as well as the security of the area.” Fiona Lloyd, sales and marketing director at Taylor Wimpey South Midlands, told the Stotfold News Magazine “We are pleased Etonbury Academy now has a fresh and secure place for pupils and the local community to store their bikes. It is our intention when we build new homes that we also contribute to the existing community and making donations such as this is one way we can be of help.”

Stotfold Art Group News.. Welcome to the latest news from Stotfold Art Group.
This month we are looking at two colourful paintings from friends and neighbours Sheila Archer and Barbara Hook
Barbara's work has been featured before; this oriental poppy in watercolour shows her love of plants and gardening. Sheila's sunflower in oil paint is a work she did a few years ago. She is well known in Stotfold as a former post lady and Cub Scout leader.
Many people have bought her lovely paintings of local places, especially Ickleford, Hitchin and Stotfold. Sheila loves to paint old buildings and rural scenes, always in watercolour, and she has developed a light and delicate touch.
Her work has been shown in the Ivel tea room at Stotfold Mill, where she worked as a volunteer helper and it was here that she helped to set up the Art Group's connection with the Stotfold Mill.
The group are looking forward to being able to meet again in person but are waiting to hear about the required restrictions lifting before they are able to do do. In the meantime further equires to the group can be made by contacting 07734 304590

Welcome Donation For
Luna Resue
David Wilson Homes has donated £1,000 to a Stotfold-based Animal Rescue charity that helps to rehome animals including dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and ponies. Luna Animal Rescue, founded in October 2013, started with the aim to help rehome dogs who found themselves abandoned and without families in Bedfordshire. The foster based charity has since expanded, and although still mainly working in the south east of England, it has now rehomed more than 2,500 animals across the UK.
The donation comes as part of the developer’s Community Fund Scheme, in which £1,000 is donated each month to charities and organisations near to where they build. With April being National Pet Month, David Wilson Homes wanted to support a charity that helps give animals a home. The donation will help the charity Natalie Howe (L) and Faye-Michelle Mallows (R) of Luna Animal Rescue with build new enclosures at its base at Larch Farm. Eventually, the the cheque donated by David Wilson Homes. charity hopes to make the farm a public resource in which families can come and visit as a day out. Handy Henr y Natalie Howe, Founder of Luna Animal Rescue, told the Stotfold News Magazine “We’re Stotfoldd based handyman who really grateful to receive this donation from David Wilson Homes. It is fantastic to know that our donation is going to help the charity create better habitats for the animals they look after.”

Val is keen for this to be a group for everyone – from those who haven’t painted since they were a child through to experienced artists, and everyone in-between. Although there will be no formal ‘teaching’, there will be help available for those who want to try something new. The focus will be on encouragement and mutual support. A few basic materials will be available to try for those who are new to painting or those who want to get experience with different media. The art group will give people the opportunity to explore different ways of painting, to try out different paints and to have fun with paint.

Methodist Church
Methodist Church news – symbols of Cross, Vine and Fruit
The most memorable symbol of the church is the cross of Jesus. You will see it outside most churches. It represents God’s self-giving love for humanity, and for the victory of Jesus Christ over sin and death. Sin is anything that falls short of God’s desire for the world - hunger, violence, discrimination, damage to the environment - all these fall short of what God wants for us and from us. That’s why Jesus is important to us. There are other symbols that are helpful, one is “the vine”. The gospel writers had different things to say about Jesus. One of the four, John, wrote about Jesus describing himself as “the true vine”, and his followers as branches. Jesus tells his followers that if they stay connected to “the vine” then they will “bear fruit”. He goes on to remind them of God’s love for the world, and that the fruit they bear will bring glory to God. Finally, he warns them to not only remember his commands (love each other, love God, love your neighbour) but to actually follow them, do what he asks. I know that many people carry out these commands without knowing anything about Jesus. But other people don’t. Sometimes that’s us. The gospel (good news) is that Jesus has the victory over human failings, and can give this victory to others. Jesus spoke about grafting in new branches to the vine. That can be you, anyone who wants to join up with Jesus, and bear good fruit in this world. I think that most people want to do good. Jesus can help. He’s the vine. And we could do with some good fruit, yes? The Methodist Churches are open approximately every other Sunday morning for worship, and I am unsure of what weekday activities will be resuming in June. But hopefully it will be a fruitful time. Revd. Graham 07340 857386 Graham.Claydon-Knights@methodist.org.uk

OUT AND ABOUT – WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN JUNE
PLANTS Orchids flourish on the local chalky and sandy soils. It’s not clear why the Bee Orchid has evolved its flower to lure in male bees by looking (and smelling!) like females, as it is self pollinating, so doesn’t need visitors anyway! The cluster of bright pink, tightly packed flowers of the Pyramidal Orchid can have as many as 100 on a single stem. More easily seen are the vibrant white Oxeye Daisies, and the deep magenta flower spikes of Foxgloves, which can grow to 2 M tall. Yellow rattle is an important plant in wildflower meadows, and can be seen in the Stotfold Nature Reserve. INSECTS Look out for the fearsome-looking Stag Beetle, emerging from grubs in old decaying wood. Also the cleverly camouflaged green Shield Bug. On the surface of still water Pond Skaters and Water Boatmen may be seen darting around.
IN THE AIR You may notice birds taking caterpillars or insect larvae off to the nest, before returning to boost their own energy levels from the bird table or feeder. In hot weather, avoid putting out dry food such as stale bread, as this can hasten dehydration. Remember birds need plenty of fresh water for drinking and bathing, especially in hot dry weather. June is also the time when bats are raising their young. The most common (and smallest) species is the Pipistrelle, which can be found in a variety of habitats wherever there is a plentiful supply of insects. Just after sunset is the time to try and spot them flitting around. MAMMALS The badger is a shy creature, and best left well alone, although we know there are several underground “setts” in the area. Any new “cubs” will have been born underground back in February, and by now they will be getting more independent – no longer dependant on their mother for milk, and foraging for earthworms.

TOWN COUNCILLOR VACANCY
We are currently looking for a new member to join our council membership.
What does a Town Council do? All councils have one thing in common, their purpose is to make the lives of people in their community better and to give local people a voice and the means to achieve this. A Town Council is the tier of local government closest to the people. Stotfold Town Council is made up of 15 local councillors; people just like you, who give up a little of their time each week to represent the interests of their local community.
What does a Town Councillor do? Becoming a Town Councillor is both a rewarding and privileged form of public service; you will be in a position to make a difference to the quality of daily life and future prospects of the people of your community. It requires both commitment and hard work, and you will need to be able to balance the needs and interests of residents and that of the Council, all of which will make demands on your time. Local councillors have three main areas of work: DECISION MAKING - attendance at meetings with other elected members, Councillors decide which activities to support, where money should be spent, what services should be delivered and what policies should be implemented. MONITORING – Councillors make sure that their decisions lead to efficient and effective services by keeping an eye on how well things are working. GETTING INVOLVED LOCALLY – as local representatives, Councillors have responsibilities towards their constituents and local organisations. This often depends on what the Councillor wants to achieve and how much time is available. The Town Council delivers a lot of what it does in partnership with other services and agencies, and so you may have opportunities to sit on partnership boards or committees of other organisations. How much time will it take up?
The amount of time being a Councillor takes up will, to some extent, be up to you, but it is a commitment that you should consider carefully. You will be required to attend meetings, which are usually held in the evenings. You will need to spend time talking to people in your community. Make time to read papers in preparation for meetings. By law, your employer must allow you to take a reasonable amount of time off during working hours to perform your duties as a Councillor Who can be a councillor?
You must be over the age of 18 and a citizen of the European Union or the Commonwealth; be a local government elector of Stotfold OR have owned land or premises in the whole of the last 12 months in Stotfold OR have lived in Stotfold (or within 3 miles) for the whole of the last 12 months OR have worked in Stotfold for the whole of the last 12 months. For more information on the role of Town Councillor and what we do as a council, please visit our website, where you will find lots of information on our activities and services and meetings held. If you are interested in being co-opted onto the Town Council, please contact us on enquiries@stotfoldtowncouncil.gov.uk or phone 01462 730064 for an application form.

STOTFOLD CITIZENS AWARDS
Every year, we look to show our appreciation to those who have made a valuable and outstanding contribution to the life of the community of Stotfold, on a voluntary basis and outside of their everyday occupation. These people have gone above and beyond for their fellow residents and have therefore been nominated for a Citizens Award by friends, colleagues or others who know of them and their involvements.
This year, we have awarded Stotfold Citizens Awards to: Jan Gale
Jan is the landlady of one of our local pubs, The Stag. In her seven years in Stotfold, she has become a big part of the local community, sponsoring events for local individuals and deserving causes, providing Christmas dinners for the Stotfold Good Neighbour Group clients, organising quiz evenings, collection jars, and more to help raise funds for others. During the Coronavirus pandemic, she has helped those who were in isolation or feeling lonely, providing a safe collection system or delivery of groceries and meals to the community, and has set up mornings and activities for mothers and tots to support them during the current difficult times. Roger Watson
Roger is both a member of the local Teasel Group, as well as a volunteer at Stotfold Watermill where he additionally runs the Archive Group. He co-ordinates the activities of the Teasel Group at both the Stotfold Nature Reserve and at other green spaces around Stotfold, such as Centenary wood and the Community Orchard behind Etonbury Academy. He puts a huge amount of his time and effort into making sure these facilities are in the best possible condition for members of the public to enjoy. His cheerful nature and enthusiasm have helped significantly raise the number of volunteers for Teasel over the last few years. During the pandemic period, he has gone to great lengths to ensure that any work groups have operated in a Covid-safe way and has worked to ensure that the ‘green lungs’ of our town - our open spaces, remain available to residents for both their physical and mental wellbeing. Snowy the cat
This nomination was slightly different from those normally considered, in that the services rendered were done silently and with no praise being expected or asked for this Stotfold resident. Those of us who have visited the Cooperative store during the periods of lockdown will have been aware of the changes from normal such as hand and trolley cleansing facilities plus requirement to wear face masks and keep apart within the store. As such, general mood during changes of government instructions and restrictions has at times been of despair and perhaps grumpiness. A little ray of happiness appeared, in the form of a four-legged big white ball of fluff, who insisted on escorting people through the store doors, only asking for the occasional stroke or belly rub from young or old alike. Despite being regularly carried out by staff, Greenacre development resident, Snowy the cat, would guarantee to be back inside the automatic doors much more quicky that they could manage and be ready to accompany another customer inside. Many a gloomy face or bored youngster was cheered up by his presence. The feline presence was greatly appreciated such that it was considered worthy of an honorary award for services to the town and its residents.
This year, our awards were given ‘virtually’, and so photographs of the successful human recipients will follow when Coronavirus restrictions ease! MAYOR & DEPUTY MAYOR FOR 2021-2022 YEAR
At our Annual Meeting of the Council on 5th May, Councillor Alan Cooper was elected to serve as Stotfold Town Council’s Chairman and Mayor of Stotfold for the forthcoming year. Councillor Brian Collier was elected to serve as Vice-Chairman and Deputy Mayor of Stotfold. If you wish to invite the Mayor to an event, please contact Jeanette Everitt, Mayor’s Secretary on enquiries@stotfoldtowncouncil.gov.uk or telephone 01462 730064.
