From the Editor Welcome to October! Our favourite time of year is upon us and life returns back to ‘normal’ for those of us juggling school holidays and a busy working life! Our October issue is extremely busy as per usual with many, many notices, news items and forthcoming events. Great to see so many letters once again in this issue, please keep them coming in. On the 2nd of October, the Stotfold News Magazine has been invited to speak at the monthly Good Afternoon Club at Stotfold Library. We are really looking forward to meeting everyone and answering any questions you may have about our monthly magazine. You can find out further information by turning to the Stotfold Library article on page 12 of our October issue.
Another opportunity for us to get out and about in the community this month is of course the Working Steam Weekend on 5th and 6th October. Slightly different from the May event, this weekend is becoming bigger and bigger every year and we really enjoy all of the wonderful activities and events that go on throughout these two days. Thank you to the organisers of this event for welcoming us along once again - let’s hope the weather is much kinder to us than last year! If you plan to pop down please stop by our stand at the entrance and say hello!
On page ten of this month’s issue you will find the first of many contributions to the Stotfold News Magazine from the Bedfordshire Road Safety Partnership. This partnership is a joint initiative from our local police force aimed at reducing the amount of casualties on our local roads. Throughout the next twelve months, this partnership will explore ways in which we can all get involved with raising awareness of road safety. We extend a warm welcome to them and look forward to receiving their monthly updates.

Samuel Whitbread wins National Rugby School of the Year
Samuel Whitbread Academy has added another honour to its growing list of sporting achievements in 2019 by being awarded Best Rugby School at the National Rugby Awards at Twickenham back in August. Whitbread were up against other high calibre nominations from across the country at the prestigious event, including Sedbergh who’s side this year has been dubbed ‘the best team ever to play school rugby’, but were awarded the prize owing to their incredible triumphs in the National Vase, to the delight of all the coaching staff present. With a packed room of 400 people eagerly awaiting awards from various different categories, Sky Sports presenter Alex Payne announced Whitbread as the winners and lauded over the school’s progress and success as a state school amongst so many big independent schools. Head of Rugby Edd Rhodes said: “It’s unbelievable to see how far this school has come over the last few years. After winning both the U15 and U18 Natwest Vase competitions at Twickenham this year, to now win the Best Rugby School Award really highlights the recognition that the players, parents and coaching staff deserve. It has been an incredible year and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for rugby at the school.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,
Like many people in Stotfold we were amazed to read ABT's letter in the September issue...He can't surely be referring to the same Stotfold that we happily live in when he says that there is nothing going on here..He tells us it's ‘many a year now since we had so much going on in the village,’ ABT you only have to read the pages of the very magazine that published your letter to see that there is plenty going on here, coffee mornings, jumble sales, car boots, the gardening club, litter picks,Teasel and of course all the events associated with The Mill. In fact, we are involved in three quizzes all taking place before the end of October and they are all happening in Stotfold...Not much going on then?. ABT tells us that we have lost all our lovely walks, not so, come and join us on the Thursday morning Health Walks ABT and you will see that there are still plenty of lovely walks in Stotfold, it was on these very walks that we first met each other, and then got to know each other better playing Scrabble at The Monday Club (yet another weekly event in Stotfold)... We are certain that all the great and the good in Stotfold who spend lots of their time arranging all the many and varied events will also be scratching their heads at ABT's comments, to these people we say a big thank you... ABT you should really get out more lol.... Brenda and Richard Norris Columbine Lane (part of the concrete jungle)
Dear Editor, A couple of weeks back my house was broken into. Obviously being devastated and managing to lock myself out of the house (following the police visit etc), I was in turmoil with what to do. I phoned a chap I used a couple of years ago to replace a window and once I explained what had happened, he was at my house in minutes. Obviously I was distressed - and it was not even 6am at this point! This chap, Jonny Garside, sorted my locks out, managed to open the door and to top it all, he would not take a penny - he was so humble and just pleased to be able to help me out.
I wish to thank Jonny through the pages of the Stotfold News Magazine for restoring my faith in people and for helping me in my time of need.

News from
Stotfold Watermill
Every little counts….
If you could give just a few minutes of your time it really would be an immense help to us!
Firstly, if you could manage to give a few minutes on a Thursday and Friday, especially if you live close to the mill, just to put out and take in our bins it would be another job less for our busy team to do. Or perhaps you could find an hour or so every couple of weeks in the summer to run our mower across the very small lawn at the back of the mill and just keep the shrubs in check. If you really feel more generous with your time then perhaps you would undertake a little cleaning in the mill – not as onerous as you might imagine – mostly sweeping down the stairs and checking the toilets – probably 1- 2 hours a week, mainly from late March until October. If you could help out with any of these – even job-share with a friend - it really would be much appreciated. Contact us via enquiries@stotfoldmill.com or call 01462 734541
The mill is entirely run by volunteers – as we say ‘by the community, for the community’ with some people undertaking major commitments to enable the mill to stay open for the education and enjoyment of visitors. One such group are the team who have been planning and organising the Working Steam Weekend, taking place on 5th & 6th October. A great family day out with displays of various steam driven machinery, focussing particularly on the history of farming over two centuries, as well as many trade and craft stalls. There is again a need for volunteers to give a little time over the weekend or by helping to set up in the days before. September has been a busy time at the mill with the Craft Weekend that attracted many of you on the 7/8th and the Heritage Day Exhibition on the 15th & 22nd as well as the MG Car Owners Club Bedfordshire Walking Festival around Mills of the Etonbury Green Wheel. You might still have chance to join the Bat Walk in the Nature Reserve on 27th September at 6pm. On Sunday afternoon 29th we are pleased to welcome local writer Clare Elson who will be signing copies of her children’s book Garden Adventures of Rosie Red. This is a beautifully illustrated book for young children that tells the magical story of a little girl, Rosie, who is helping her grandad in the garden when they encounter a baby hedgehog. As well as featuring the Working Steam weekend in October we will have a special event for children. A Halloween Treasure Hunt is to be held in the nature reserve on Saturday 26th October, 3:00pm to 5:00pm. £2.00 per child adults go free! Children must be accompanied by an adult. Hot dogs and spiced apple juice will be for sale. For more information see our website or our Facebook page. There will be one final opportunity, on 20th, to visit and enjoy an afternoon tea -On that Sunday we are anticipating a visit from members of the MG Car Owners Club. There is likely to be up to 100 MG cars of all ages. The owners will be parking their vehicles in the nature reserve meadow 1 or in the field opposite the mill. Members of the public are invited to visit and inspect the cars on display. We have recently linked up with Gerry Moss of Jay K9, Biggleswade, who is an accredited dog behaviour trainer, running courses encouraging responsible dog ownership. Gerry will hold a mantrailing session on 13th October. Mantrailing teaches you and your dog to hunt down missing persons. Participating owners wear yellow Hi-Viz jackets and the dogs will all be fully under control. Find out more information, come along to meet Gerry or visit the Jay K9 website, www.jayk9.co.uk.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,
Recently I used the Stotfold News Magazine to obtain some quotes on redecorating my lounge. I called several businesses, but decided to use Darren Peters due to his prompt reply and most competitive quote. Darren came along to do the work whilst I enjoyed a few days away. To return home from holiday and find the room complete was such a lovely suprise. I would like to thank Darren through your letters page and recommend his services to anyone looking for great service and a job very well finished. Many thanks once again Darren Mrs M West.
Hi Joanne, Just wanted to let you know that the advertising I have in the Stotfold News Magazine has been really effective! Enquiries come in every week and I now have many happy customers from Stotfold. The magazine is a great way to promote your business and keeping it local gives confidence to potential customers . Many thanks for all your help as always. Andy Leonard , Painter & Decorator .
Dear Editor,
In a few weeks time I will be taking on the challenge of the Royal Parks Half Marathon in London.
I am running to raise money for CLIC Sargent Young Lives vs Cancer, it's a great Charity and one I firmly believe in who help keep families close together when a child is undergoing treatment for Cancer. I have run for CLIC Sargent before and will do again. I'm hoping to raise as much money as I can for this great cause.

Letters to the Editor Dear users of Riverside Playing Field -
Stotfold Riverside is a much loved area for the whole of our community - families, children, sports and nature lovers and walkers (with or without dogs!). Unfortunately, this is becoming less and less of a pleasure due to the anti social (and dangerous) habits of the minority who use it. I would appeal to the people (and young people and their parents) to be more considerate of others – specifically around the shelter and the car park where large amounts of litter, broken or discarded glass bottles etc. There are plenty of bins around – please use them. Would you like to be responsible for a small child to fall and be badly cut by broken glass or a squashed drinks can? Let’s keep the Riverside a safe place for us all to enjoy long into the future. JT
Dear Editor, We have recently moved into the area, and the information contained in your publication has been most beneficial. Recently we required some minor building work carried out, and after a couple of false starts we found Graham Smith Brickwork and Paving. He arrived as planned, gave us a fixed date when the work would be completed, and attended punctually every day, sometimes working long hours in the recent very hot weather.
He was extremely polite, as was his assistant, both professional workers who made sure our property remained safe, clean, and secure throughout the project. We would highly recommend this company Paul and Christine Ball

Working In Partnership To Reduce Casualties On Local Roads
I know just how important road safety is for the local community of Stotfold and over the coming months we are going to be updating you on the efforts we are making in your area to reduce casualties on our roads and target those breaking the law. As Head of the Bedfordshire Road Safety partnership and in my role as Casualty Reduction Manager for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Constabularies, I co-ordinate activity to make our roads safer. All partners in the RSP are absolutely committed to working together to deliver activity which should have a positive impact. In case you weren’t aware, for Beds, Cambs and Herts we have a dedicated Road Policing Unit who work 24/7 to target the fatal four offences (LIST) based on analytical work which identifies our high risk roads. This includes the A507 and we are looking at putting up signage, which was funded by the partnership, reminding drivers and riders to slow down. We also work with our local colleagues in Bedfordshire alongside our partners to deliver a number of local initiatives including Operation Impact – a proactive initiative enabling Community Policing Teams to engage with Bedfordshire Road users. We have a number of projects in development and I look forward to updating you in the coming months. Happy Birthday Respite at Home Volunteers!
This summer Respite at Home Volunteers West Mid Beds and Ivel Valley celebrated 20 years of working in the local community, at a special event with afternoon tea and cake at Jordan’s Mill. Guests included volunteers present and past, professional partners, some of the families we help on a regular basis and a great turn out from our local Mayors and Councillors. It was a fabulous afternoon bringing people together to celebrate our achievement.
The charity helps people with life limiting illnesses and gives support to their families by giving them some respite and much needed time off from caring for their loved ones. All volunteers are an amazing group of people who give up their free time to help families in their own homes who are affected by serious illness. Caring for someone you love at home can be tiring and isolating and volunteers can help to relieve the family, by giving them time to see their friends, go shopping or simply relax. Volunteer’s visit the family each week for up to three hours, give practical help where it’s needed and become a supporting friend during illness – and often far beyond. Respite at Home are also looking for more volunteers to help support families in Bedfordshire. So if you have a couple of hours to spare each week and enjoy spending time chatting and listening, then this is an opportunity for you! So why not join the team and help celebrate 20 years of working in the local community!

300 Mile Cycle Ride Is A Huge Success Following on from our article last month, we are pleased to update you on the recent trip to Ypres in Belgium by Royal British Legion members, Pauls Watts, Paul Brogden and Phillip Johnys. The ex-servicemen cycled 300 miles in August and have so far raised over £1,000. They also too the opportunity to lay a wreath at another cemetery in Are you having having France along the route. computer Team Captain Paul Brogden said ‘it was a great honour to lay the wreath at the problems? pr oblems? evening’s remembrance event, especially as RBL member Phillip Johnnys was selected to read out the epitaph.’ Y

Pix Brook Academy. Every teacher in the world finds themselves saying the same thing at this time of year: “the summer holidays, when were they?” For those of us who started at a new school this September that feeling is even more profound. It’s always tricky starting somewhere new but when everyone and everything is new it really is a challenge. Pix Brook Academy opened its doors for the very first time on Wednesday 4th September to its first cohort of Y5 pupils. Everyone arrived in their shiny uniform looking smart. Slightly nervous parents waved goodbye as children entered the new building and were able to go into their new classrooms for the first time. I am delighted that the building has lived up to the expectations and the facilities and fabric of the building are very much 21st century.
Pupils were quickly integrated into the rhythm of the school day and all too soon expectations were established. Pix Brook is very much a values based school and our first assembly focussed on the importance of ambition, aspiration and responsibility. Pupils responded brilliantly to the message and were quickly sharing thoughts on how these values can be seen. It’s obviously been an enormously busy time. After school clubs have been really well attended, lessons have included all the normal activities and all staff and pupils have thrown themselves into the multitude of tasks necessary in a new school with vigour. We now look to establish our sustainable routines and begin an exciting educational journey. If this week is anything to go by its going to be quite a ride. Mr Adams Principal - Pix Brook Academy

Etonbury Academy. We are delighted to have welcomed our new year 5 students to Etonbury Juniors, as well as new students that have joined us across the upper years, and new staff. It has been a Summer of celebrations following our fantastic GCSE results with so many students achieving over and above their expected grades! Huge congratulations to our 2019 GCSE students, setting us up for many more successful years to come. It has also been a busy Summer making further improvements to our site. Etonbury Juniors has been refurbished, various outside areas landscaped, a new catering company installed brand new catering equipment, and Luna Animal Rescue Community Haven (LARCH) have now taken over the farm. Our students have already been enjoying these improvements. The newly structured and experienced senior leadership team are now firmly in place, including Ian Evason (Principal), Joanne Young (Vice Principal), Michael Craddock (Assistant Principal), Ravi Baga (Assistant Principal), Isobel Whent/Amy Mew (Assistant Principal), Lesley Whittle (Head of Juniors), Joanne Hammond (Senior Teacher), Rhys Kirkman (Senior Teacher), Ian Bodger (Systems Leader) and Victoria Lockey (School Manager).
We have so much to look forward to over the coming year. Just this term, students will be venturing to the theatre to see Blood Brothers and the London Tate Modern. Preparations will also soon be underway for the school Christmas Concert to showcase our very talented performers. Mr Evason said “ I am really looking forward to the year ahead. We have great teams of talented and committed staff in place from Form Tutors, Heads of Year to Heads of Department. There is a real buzz around the academy, it’s good to see our students back for the new year and enjoying their school.” As our school develops we will continue to recruit talented and aspiring teachers, and welcome expressions of interest.
Please contact the school to be informed of any vacancies in the future by telephoning 01462 730391 or email vlockey@bestacademies.org.uk A great place to work and learn.

Roecroft Lower School. The start of a new academic year is here again. Children arrived back at school full of smiles and excitement, it was wonderful to see. The following week we welcomed in 90 new starters to our Reception unit, the staff are so pleased with how well they have settled in. A huge welcome to you all! Over September we spoke about fresh starts and what this means, recognising that sometimes we feel nervous or apprehensive and this is all totally normal - we can always ask questions and find help when we are worried, we are not alone and others will also feel like this. Our focus for September was, of course, linked to our values, but we also focused on the word START: S – Speak with kindness and be thoughtful about the things you say. T – Spend your time well. Don’t waste it. Use it to work hard and embrace each moment. A – Try to keep a positive attitude each day. If it is hard to be positive, ask for help. R – Things can make you upset or angry from time to time, think about your reaction to these emotions, how is it best to react. T – The children at Roecroft are extremely talented. Apply yourself and be proud of your talents. An Update from the Key Stage 1 team: We all had a brilliant summer break and have been eager to start in our new KS1 classes. Over the first few weeks, we have settled into our classes, shared news from our holiday and are ready to learn lots of exciting things in the Autumn Term. Year 1 will be focusing on ‘A Toy Story’ for their topic and will be comparing toys from the past and present, making fabric puppets and learning about different materials that make toys. Year 2 will be exploring a different topic, ‘Fire and Ice’. They will be learning about the history of the Great Fire of London, arctic regions on a map and will also be making fire engines with moving mechanisms. To further inspire us with our learning, we will be having a topic day which will include lots of creative and exciting activities to develop our knowledge. We are looking forward to celebrating another year of excellence with our local community, we hope our current and prospective families will join us for our Open Evening on the 29th October. It is an evening that truly showcases the school and the energy, talent and passion our team offer each day to our pupils. Best wishes, Mrs Cross

St Mary’s CE Academy The children have all settled back into the school routine very well and it’s amazing how quickly the summer holidays are forgotten! We are delighted with the improvements to our outside Foundation area with the addition of the new all-weather artificial grass area to supplement the existing play equipment and sun canopy. We are hoping for continued mild weather so that we can fully enjoy our wonderful outside areas.
Memorial sculpture for Mrs Brightwell We have also been busy over the summer with a number of projects including new carpets, windows and doors in several classrooms and freshly painted corridors. We also have a beautiful hand painted mural wall outside Crystal Class in our new building. Our very special sculpture in memory of Mrs Brightwell is now in place in the Memory Garden at the front of the school. Please feel free to pop in and see it at any time. - A huge thank you to Mr Jonny Garside, Mr Colin Thompson and MJ Ryalls Building Supplies for their generous support in putting this project together.
By the time this item is published, we will have taken part in our school Harvest Festival Celebration - a special assembly performed by all of our children to their grandparents and local senior citizens, as well as working together to fill our backpacks for our Mary’s Meals Charity. Alongside our daily assemblies Jet, Opal and Crystal Classes will be leading assemblies during the month. Parents and close family members are as always invited to attend and enjoy these. Please check our weekly Newsletter or website for more information. Our individual and family photographs will be taken on Wednesday 9th October – ideal gifts for that ‘season’ that will be upon us all too quickly! Our 2020 New Parents Information Evening is to be held on Thursday 17th October at 7.00pm. Families of children on our potential admission list are invited to come along for an information evening about starting school in 2020 and what they can look forward to during their time at St Mary’s. Everyone is welcome to attend this very important meeting.
Finally, we should mention that we are well into the new learning mission for the Autumn Term, including 'All About Me' in Reception Classes, ‘Nurturing Nurses' in Key Stage 1 and ‘The Vikings' and ‘The Stone Age’ in Key Stage 2 which will include fun and educationsl workshops. We are only just back at school from the summer break but October Half Term is from Monday 21st to Friday 25th October with an INSET training day on Monday 28th October.

My Fair Ladies Celebrate Ten Years
The local branch of the Red Hat Society is celebrating its 10 year Anniversary. The chapter called My Fair Ladies, recently enjoyed a get together over a meal at the Three Horseshoes, Norton. There was much laughter over the tales of how our ladies had heard about and joined up with the RHS and some sadness about absent friends. The Red Hat Society is a growing “disorganisation” of women who meet middle age with humor and enthusiasm. The inspiration behind the Society lies in the poem “Warning” by Jenny Joseph, about a woman who decides that when she grows old she will wear purple with a red hat and do lot of other things she never could as a 'sensible adult'. In November 1997, a California woman named Sue Ellen Cooper, inspired by the poem, began giving vintage red hats with a copy of the poem as gifts to her friends when they had their 50th birthdays. The friends passed on more hats to their friends, and soon the group found themselves going out to tea and lunch together dressed in their beautiful red hats complete with purple dresses. Today, there are about 100 chapters in the UK including My Fair Ladies based on the Herts/Beds border! So if you are interested in finding out more please contact Pam at myfairladies2@gmail.com or pop a note to 27 Queen Street, Stotfold SG5 4NX. -Now taking beginners -Next courses start end of October -Places are limited, please enquire early

BUTCHERS BLOG A warm welcome from the shop. We cannot believe that the summer is over, but Autumn is truly in the air. We have certainly been busy over the past few months making countless burgers, sausages and fulfilling orders for BBQ’s. Now the children are back at school the focus is once again about providing all important nutritious family meals.
Meat is an important part of our diet and provides the major complex B vitamins. It also is a valuable source of protein, iron and zinc. Of course as we balance our meals we can consider choosing healthier options such as lean chicken breast or thigh meat. We sell 5kg packs of these at competitive prices.
We now have a delivery of goat meat once a month and this is proving to be popular as it is very lean, is lower in cholesterol and has a higher iron content than beef. Please feel free to contact us if you would like to put in an order for any of our products. It will soon be time to think ahead about our Christmas orders, and once again we will be putting out leaflets with information about all the products available.
We wait with interest and a bit of apprehension about what will happen with our suppliers over the next few months. We hope that we will still be a able to deliver our ever popular meat hampers at an affordable price. Please remember we are just a phone call away if you need to speak to us about products or orders, you can also contact us via our Website or Facebook page. Order online for Thursday evening delivery by 5 p.m. Wednesday or place an order for click and collect. www.bealebros.co.uk Phone number 01462 730392 Until next time.

Stotfold Family Give Back to Charity In November 2015, Stotfold Citizen Award Iain Rutherford lost his very brave battle with Motor Neurone Disease. He was 74. Iain was born in Scotland but spent over 40 years of his life living in Stotfold. As a family, Iain’s wife Keryle, together with son’s Carl, Neil and their families were keen to give something back to the Motor Neurone Disease Association as they had been so supportive throughout Iains dreadful illness. Both sons decided to use their vast skills of Stage Management and Directing the best way they knew how. In April 2016, the family put on a Charity Gala Concert featuring notable West End performers and hosted by Claire Sweeney at the Gordon Craig Theatre in Stevenage, raising a tremendous £9,000. Some of the money raised went to the local MNDA branch and the rest went to the National Association to help fund research into Motor Neurone Disease.
The family feel that the time has come to do another Charity Gala, this year held at the larger Arts and Leisure Centre Concert Hall in Stevenage on Sunday 3rd November. This Gala will be a similar format again with current performers from the West End (Alice Fearn and Oliver Savile from ‘Wicked’, James Hume from ‘Les Miserables’, Dean John Wilson from ‘Aladdin’, Lynsey Britton from ‘Cats’), together with a 30 piece orchestra and 40 piece choir. (subject to availability.) If you would like to book tickets please see the advert below. In addition, the family are seeking sponsorship donations from local businesses in return for advertising in the programme and the opportunity to display marketing material at the Gala. If you are interested in finding out more please email carlrutherford2144 @gmail.com.

Cows are nosy and may come to investigate, especially if you have a dog with you Last year there were more than 700 cases of dogs worrying livestock
LOVE YOUR
COUNTRYSIDE
Remember, cows can be protective of their young
Top tips to enjoy your countryside • Keep the countryside beautiful and take your litter home • Leave gates as you find them and follow instructions on signs • Keep your dog close, under control and on a lead around cows and sheep • If you are threatened by cattle let your dog go - it will run to safety • Don’t panic or run if cattle follow you - stay calm and walk quickly and quietly around
Stick to the path to avoid damaging crops if you’re walking through fields
the herd • Avoid getting between cows and their calves - find another way round the herd and rejoin the footpath as soon as possible • Be careful not to damage growing crops and stick to the path if walking through fields • Don’t forget to clean up after your dog
