From the Editor
Welcome to September,
This month has all been about juggling. Juggling the magazine whilst entertaining the children in the holidays is always a challenge. We were fortunate to escape for a week earlier this month on a camping trip to Norfolk, temperatures reached over thirty degrees on some days so we spent most of the week by the sea. We remembered to pack a copy of the Stotfold News Magazine of course! Thank you to everyone that has taken the time to send us in their photographs this month, we have a stunning selection of sunset pictures we hope you will enjoy on page 13 of this issue. We always love receiving your pictures so please do keep sending them in to us.
You will notice this month there are more new advertisers to our publication. Without doubt, publishing our magazine online has had a positive effect, with a wide variety of new businesses keen to promote themselves to our readers. Please keep an eye out for them and don’t forget to mention where you saw their advert if you choose to contact them. The advertising in the magazine is what makes the publication possible so please support these businesses wherever you can. By the time you read this most children will be nearing the end of their summer holiday and boredom may be setting in! This month we have created a children’s corner aimed at keeping them busy with a chance to win a prize. Please let us know what you think to this feature - we enjoy hearing your feedback and find it really useful in deciding on additions for the publication. We may look to include something similar to this on a regular basis - let us know your views.
As usual in our September issue you will see that a few of our regular contributions from local schools are missing due to the holidays. All school news will be back inside our October issue once normality has resumed! On a similar note, we wish all children starting their new schools in September the very best of luck (and parents too!).
We look forward to bringing you your October issue where hopefully there is less juggling and a little more normality!

Stotfold filmmaker Tom Young undertakes1,000 mile adventure
Tom Young, wildlife filmmaker and adventurer from Stotfold, is putting his body and kit through the paces taking part in a huge 1,000 mile solo trek across Europe’s wild and untamed region of Lapland. Having swam with sharks in the Atlantic, filmed bears in primeval forests in Romania and tracked wolves across snowy peaks in Italy, Tom’s latest challenge is his biggest and wildest adventure yet. Tom departed on the 25th of July from the most Northern part of Europe at Nordkapp in Norway, heading south through Finland and Sweden, crossing through taiga forest, snow-capped mountains and immense wetlands rich with wildlife, Tom pictured on a previous expedition wild camping along the way. Tom says: “I’ve spent a lot of my free time over the past three years finding and filming wild animals in Europe that once lived right here in Britain but are now extinct from our island, largely due to the impact of man. Lapland is the big one for me, as you can find all of these animals in the same area. Wolves, bears, lynx, beaver, salmon, moose, and eagles all living in a vast wilderness that remains largely intact. I will be walking, eating and sleeping where all of these animals still naturally exist. I’m absolutely buzzing at the thought!” It will take Tom around 70 days to cross Lapland from North to South, covering almost the entirety of the Arctic circle in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Western Russia. This has been the home of the native Sami people for thousands of years. “I’m hoping to not only come across signs of amazing wildlife, but to also get a glimpse of what it is like for the Sami people to co-exist alongside large mammals, and how it has had an impact on their traditional livelihood of reindeerherding.” Tom will be producing an adventure documentary of his expedition which will be ready by January 2019,when he hopes to screen the film and deliver talks in local schools and at local events. The expedition is raising funds for Trees for Life, one of the UK's leading conservation volunteering charities, planting trees and restoring wildlife habitats in the Scottish Highlands, creating a wilderness forest where people and wildlife can thrive. You can find out more: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/expeditionlapland or from his website: www.tomyoungwildlife.com/lapland Where possible Tom will be posting updates on his social media accounts: Instagram: @tom_willy_young Twitter: @tyoungwildlife Facebook: /tomyoungwildlife.
We look forward to updating you on Tom’s expedition in later issues of the Stotfold News Magazine.

News from
Stotfold Watermill
IT MUST BE THE BEST!
Stotfold Mill’s stoneground wholemeal flour won high acclaim earlier this summer when it was selected by the Companions Real Bread bakery to make bread for the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire’s Annual Garden Party.
Clearly Bedfordshire’s best, it was no surprise to us as our flour, ground from locally grown Skyfall wheat, has just been a recipient of the Guild of Fine Food 2018 Great Taste Award. Marketed as Mrs Middleton's Stoneground Flour, the white flour gained one star whilst the wholemeal flour rated top at two stars. At the end of July, we were particularly pleased to welcome Julian Polhill, the High Sheriff, Maggie Rich, Director of the bakery and her team of bakers for an evening tour of the mill to learn how the flour was produced. During their visit, the party expressed amazement at the achievement of the volunteers who had restored the mill and were highly impressed by the skills of the milling team and the quality of their product. After their tour, the party were treated to tea and cakes prepared by Clare Kilby and her team of ladies from Randalls Tea Room. It is well known to all Clare’s regular visitors on a Sunday afternoon that her cream teas and cakes match the quality of the flour Miller Ray Kilby with Maggie Rich and Julian Polhill, produced by her husband’s team of millers. Undoubtedly, we can High Sheriff of Bedfordshire claim, with up to a hundred customers travelling many miles on Sundays, that our teas are the best afternoon treat in the area and the perfect finish to a fascinating tour of the mill.
Clare and Ray lead just two of the teams that contribute to the delights of a visit to Stotfold Mill. The Guides, or Stewards, who welcome visitors and the Archive team who plan our special exhibitions and the displays relating to the mills history help make a trip to the mill a fascinating experience. Why not consider joining one of our teams of volunteers? Visit www.stotfoldmill.com/volunteer for more information. Next month features two special events. 8th/9th September is the Craft Weekend at the Mill when a wide range of crafts will be on display and for sale including; ceramics, jewellery, textiles, sculpture, millinery and print work. The artists, all local and many from Artists’ Network Bedfordshire will be there to show and explain the materials and techniques they have used. On 15th September we are holding a Silver jewellery Workshop led by Kathy Taylor, a local artist specialising in silver and copper jewellery. Details can be found on our website.
Our final major event of the year is the Working Steam Weekend on 13th, 14th October. This promises a great day out and a rare opportunity to see a unique collection of steam-driven machines for ploughing, threshing and harvesting, that revolutionised farming. These faster, more efficient methods meant that bread, the staple of life for most of the population, was more affordable. With hundreds of enthusiastic visitors from far afield attracted to the event we will be looking for many volunteers to help with the event. Can you help?

Letters to the Editor Dear Joanne,
Recently I needed the services of a plumber, so my son who was staying with me at the time picked up a copy of the Stotfold News Magazine and found the phone number for GSP Heating & Plumbing. The young man who answered said he could fit me in that same afternoon (I was amazed as it was a Saturday too!).
He arrived promptly, was very pleasant and friendly and completed the job in less than half an hour. I would be happy to recommend Gregg from GSP Heating & Plumbing to anyone and would certainly send for him again if needed.
Three others who have come to my rescue at different times and I would like to personally recommend are Hertfordshire Roofing Ltd, Brian McInally Domestic Gas & Heating Engineer and HB Decorators and Property Maintenance.
I want to thank the Stotfold News Magazine not only for the many interesting and informative articles, but for all the local help numbers advertising in the one magazine. It does make life so much easier than having to wade through telephone directories with such tiny print!
With reference to the recent article on ‘wartime letters’ thank you Mollie for taking us down Memory Lane. I knew many of the girls you mention and more. I was one of them! Eileen Conder.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,
Why does the news that the Etonbury Green Wheel Masterplan has been approved (August 2018 issue) fill me with dread? Call me an old cynic, but I do wonder if the Councils involved really can deliver proper maintenance to something like this in the years to come, when it seems they can't even maintain what is already in place.
What immediately springs to mind is the current cycle track, proudly renamed for Ms Pendleton just a few years ago, but not very well looked after at all - what a sight it is now; with its faded and missing road markings and signs, uneven surface, permanently scruffy verges and litter everywhere.
Oh, the litter. I walk this route every day, and I walk some of the Kingfisher Way most days. I pick up bags of recyclable rubbish every other day not only on the cycle way but on the footpaths, too. I could pick up much more, but sadly have to leave much behind because there is a limit to what I will handle and lugging bags of trash about spoils my walk. It spoils my walk to see crisp packets and energy bar wrappers and water bottles discarded into hedges or crops. Or used toilet paper, or drug paraphernalia or beer cans or whatever else folk just have to leave behind.
There is a litter bin opposite the Fox and Duck which is well used but sometimes not emptied regularly enough, and doesn't appeal to the folk who eat their takeaways from their cars parked on the farm track not 20 yards away who just bung their rubbish out of the window, along with anything else they don't want in their cars. Antifreeze bottles, air fresheners, used tissues, fag packets, clothing, nappies et al. There are no other litter bins at any of the entrances to the field footpaths.
There are, however, dog poo bins. Also very well used, yet still not enough to contain all the waste. The farm tracks and footpaths are always well seasoned with piles of excrement, and - even more puzzling - also with bagged dog poo...the bags are left where they are discarded in verges, or hung in hedges. Whats the point of that? And its really not just irresponsible youths, after the recent fun run along the public paths I picked up discarded energy drinks bottles and snack packets.
I'm sure that these problems are not limited to my small walking area, and exist along the rest of the routes, too. So, are the councils going to provide more responsible answers to these problems which already exist? Will there be more manpower to clean up on a more regular basis? Because providing access to wonderful green spaces sounds great in the boardroom, but fails in reality if folk can't (or won't) respect them.
There is of course another side to this, as the prescence of even more litter and excrement affects not only the people who use the paths and byways, but those who farm the land they pass through. Aren't the farmers under enough pressure as it is to maintain their crops, and some of the tracks from not becoming overgrown, that they have to deal with rubbish mixing in with their crops? Or more people who think it their right to enter the fields and perhaps damage crops? Come and enjoy the nature, take only memories and leave only footprints.... I wish this could be true.
Sincerely, Anon
Dear Joanne,
I would like to recommend Mark,of Stotfold Plastering. I have used his services several times now and each time I have been delighted with the results. He is a very clean and tidy worker, He plastered a wall for me whilst I was on holiday recently, I came home to find not only had he done a first class job but he had left the room spotlessly clean. I would have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone needing any type of plastering work.
Yours faithfully Elizabeth Morrison

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, I should like to express my thanks for the letter from Mollie Jennings which appeared in Issue 160 of Stotfold News. It brought back memories of my early childhood in wartime Britain.
I was in the Infants' school at St Mary's at the time and we had a slightly different routine, probably because we were younger. When the sirens sounded we were taken to the largest classroom, the windows of which had been bricked up from the outside. There was a piano in one corner which the music teacher played vigorously and we were told to sing as loud as we could. When the 'all clear' sounded we were trouped back to our classrooms to carry on with lessons. I should like to pay tribute to the teachers of St Mary's at that time. They gave us all a good education in spite of many difficulties. When we left Stotfold to go to senior school, we were well up with the other students who came from a wider area. Janice Clegg
Dear Editor,
I would like to recommend the services of regular Stotfold News Magazine advertiser Bugs & Things. I am currently renting out a house in Stotfold and needed a wasps nest attending to as a matter of urgency as I had new tenants about to move in the following day. Bugs & Things came out the same day and gave such a great, reliable service.

In the new term starting on Wednesday 5th September, we look forward to welcoming everyone back, especially our children and families who are starting in Reception later in the month.
I know that lesson plans for September are well underway to ensure the children return to exciting and creative educational activities. There will be lots of learning with a wide range of new topics. We will also have all of our usual Autumn term events lined up, including Harvest Festival, parent’s information evenings, SMSA events and class assemblies. We will also hit the ground running with our many extra-curricular clubs, so much to look forward to!
We also make the very positive move to single age classes across the school from September with the introduction of Jet Class for Year 3. Miss Ellie Attenborough will be joining St Mary’s to lead the class.... how exciting! After a year of brilliant fundraising by the SMSA we will also hope to return with new teacher and children’s IPADs as well as new play equipment in the foundation stage outside area. We are also hoping to work on more usable ground space on our playing field.
As a school we are also very proud of our fundraising efforts which in this last academic year totalled over £4500 which has been distributed to many charities like Macmillan, Children In Need, Childline, Save the Children, Comic Relief, Royal British Legion, Sick Children's Trust at Addenbrookes and Sport Relief. Many thanks go to our staff, community and families for their continued support without which this would not have been possible.

Co-op Store Recieves Award
Staff at the Stotfold Co-op store were presented with an award last month in recognition of their commitment to our community. The store have been extremely unfortunate during the last few months, enduring several break-ins and the major construction work that followed as a result. The staff at the store were extremley quick to respond to these events, ensuring the store remained open and accessible at all times to its customers.
Store manager Kevin Harris was delighted to receive the award on behalf of the store. ‘It is important to us that we have been able to continue to serve our Stotfold customers as best we could during the tough times we have had over the last few months. I am thrilled that the local community recognises the hard work shown by the store and its staff and gratefully accept this award on their behalf.’
The award was presented by Stotfold Mayor Alan Cooper and was prompted by calls from Stotfold residents who felt that some well deserved recognition was due. We think everyone Coming soon.. will agree that the award is thoroughly well deserved.

Stotfold Junior Football Club What an amazing tournament we ran at the beginning of July. Thanks to all that ensured despite the very hot conditions everything ran smoothly. We hope all that took part over the weekend enjoyed themselves and we look forward to seeing you all next year We sadly had to cancel the Girls tournament which was planned for the weekend after the boy’s tournament due to the condition of the pitches and extreme weather. We take safety very seriously and had to put the children and supporter’s welfare first. We are busy getting ready for the start of the 2018/2019 season. An exciting season awaits us, with more children than ever and a small army of volunteers. We are currently recruiting for the following teams: Under 12, Under 13,Under 14 Goalkeeper
We are also looking for further volunteers whether coaching/managing and/or committee members. All are welcome to an award winning club which is one the biggest clubs in the county. Please contact the club at enquiries@stotfoldjuniorfc.co.uk or via Facebook or Twitter @stotfoldjuniorfc

Why we all need to think about making Lasting Powers of Attorney Advertising Feature
We all have insurances in place; some are compulsory like car insurance and with some it just makes sense to have them – like home contents or travel insurance.
All insurances offer protection in case the worst happens. In the case of Wills we all know that the worst has to happen at some point. We will all die one day and therefore, unless our affairs are really simple, we should all have a Will in place. With LPAs it just makes sense to cover yourself in case it may be needed. Any of us could have an accident or stroke at any time and be left mentally unable to deal with our own finances. How would the bills or rent/mortgage get paid and how would our care be funded if nobody could access our money? Accounts are frozen when someone becomes mentally unwell (even joint accounts)! An LPA should be viewed as another type of insurance policy and life would be so much easier for our families if we have decided in advance who we would like to assist us if we weren’t well enough to deal with financial matters ourselves.
Take the worry out of “What if?” No-one knows what will happen - or when. A.R.K. Lasting Powers & Wills offer a sensitive and professional way to plan ahead, giving peace of mind to you and your loved ones. Ask us about: • • • •

“Protecting you from the worst”
If you haven’t made an LPA for Property & Finance and you become too ill to manage your money the alternative is a long, costly court process which will be very stressful for your family. There is another type of LPA that we should definitely consider as we get older – this covers health and welfare. It would allow your attorneys to make decisions on your behalf about your day to day healthcare and treatment if you weren’t well enough to do that yourself, and you also get to specify your thoughts about lifesustaining treatment. We should all protect ourselves and our families by having LPAs in place – just in case …

Larksfield Surgery FLU CAMPAIGN 2018 The surgery have started planning for this year’s flu campaign and will once again be running Saturday Clinics (please look out for more information soon). This year the Government have made some changes to the type of flu vaccination that we have to give to different patient groups. Because of this and the short notice of the change the surgery will be receiving vaccinations between September and the end of November.
You will be contacted by the surgery if you are eligible inviting you to one of our clinics. We hope if you are eligible you will come to the surgery for your vaccination. If you choose not to be vaccinated it also helps us if you tell us of your decision as we then won’t keep sending you reminders! This year we will also be offering shingles and Pneumococcal vaccinations to eligible patients. We will include this in your invitation letters if you are eligible.
PHONE APPOINTMENTS Following patient comments over the past six months, we have introduced more phone call appointments. This has proved very popular. However, on review we have identified a need to ensure these calls are used appropriately so that our Doctors can deal with the problem without needing to book a face to face appointment and to ensure they run on time.Phone appointments are allocated only five minutes and should only be use for the following: ● Test results if the Doctor has said this can be done over the phone – in these instances the Doctor will ask our reception team to arrange a phone call with you ● Doctor requested follow-up of one problem ● Medication reviews ● Repeat sick certificates if they are running concurrently relating to one problem Please do not book a phone appointment for a new problem or ask Doctors to deal with more than one problem in a phone appointment.
EXTENDED ACCESS TO APPOINTMENTS You may have heard in the press over the past year about GP’s being available 8am to 8pm and on Saturdays and Sundays. NHS England has asked all Clinical Commissioning Groups to commission this service with provision beginning in September 2018. We are pleased to announce that in Ivel Valley, Larksfield will be one of the hosting practices. The service will be run by an organisation called BEDOC and will provide additional Primary Care appointments in line with the requirements. From September there will be additional appointments at Larksfield Monday to Friday between 6.30pm and 8pm and Saturdays from 8.30am to 11.30am. The Sunday service will be delivered from a site in Biggleswade. You will be able to book these appointments through the surgery.
The Larksfield News is published by the Larksfield Patient Participation Group. Any views expressed in it are the views of the PPG and not, necessarily, those of Larksfield Surgery, or any of the partners or staff of the Practice.
MISSED APPOINTMENTS UPDATE The last time we looked at the number of missed appointments was back in November when the figures were truly appalling with 61 doctor’s appointments missed and 89 nurses appointments missed.
July’s figures show a marked improvement with 43 doctor appointments missed and 45 nurses appointments missed. Whilst these figures are a great improvement they are still too high as the missed doctor’s appointments totalled 7 hours 20 minutes of work time while the missed nurses appointments came to 7 hours of work time.
PLEASE, if you have a booked appointment that you now don’t need, remember to cancel it.
