From the Editor Welcome to November!
The penultimate month of 2019 - how did we arrive here so soon? This month has been another busy time for the magazine as we have been out enjoying a variety of events and occasions. We had a great two days supporting the Working Steam Weekend and wish to thank everyone involved with organising this event. You can see a picture round-up on pages 4 and 5 of this month’s edition. Thankfully the weather was kind to us all which meant we were able to chat to so many visitors to the Mill and to our town. This month we also enjoyed an lovely afternoon speaking at the ‘Good Afternoon Club’ held at Stotfold Library. Such a friendly group all eager to hear about the history of the magazine and how we put it all together every month - you can find out more on page 7. Huge thanks to the Library for inviting us along, we enjoyed the company very much (and the cake!). We were also pleased to attend the opening of Pix Brook Academy and have included coverage of the ribbon cutting ceremony on page 33. There are many changes happening in our local schools over the next few years, you can find out more on page 6.
Towards the back of this month’s publication you will notice our forthcoming events pages are looking rather full! There are so many events coming up during the pre-christmas period, we aim to inform you about as many of these as possible! If you wish to have your event included for December be sure to email us or give us a call as soon as you are able to secure your place. We look forward to seeing you all at these events and especially look forward to Bonfire Night this year at Roker Park, we hope many of you will come along and show your support for the final display at this site.
Thank you as always to our delivery volunteers who continue to support us every month with our delivery schedule. Our routes are expanding every month as Stotfold grows to accommodate the new homes being built - we are always grateful for the understanding of our volunteers and their willingness to ‘add a few on’ every time!

Working Steam Weekend Rolls Into Town. Two days of dry weather meant hundreds of people enjoyed this year’s Working Steam Weekend. Exhibitor Liasor Colin Clifford told the Stotfold News Magazine ‘What a hectic two days we had at this year’s Stotfold Miill Working Steam Weekend . We enjoyed a great Saturday and slightly damp Sunday but still lots of people enjoyed both days. A big thank you to all our exhibitors, traders, food outlets ,the forge and the bar for helping to complete the show. We must also thank Oliver’s Agricultural Ltd for contributing to our display of farming past and present and to Mick Dilley for the use of the field. Of course this show wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for all the volunteers who put in a massive effort over the two days and to the Stotfold Mill events team, who spend many hours over many months planning to make our events happen. Lastly, a thank you to the public for coming and making it all worthwhile and enjoying the weekend.’
The Stotfold News Magazine were in attendance both days and as always we enjoyed being a part of this great Stotfold event. It is our opportunity to speak to many diferent people, some travelling many miles to visit the town and experience the working steam event.
As always, we enjoyed many of the attractions including the sheep show and the vintage bus rides through the lanes of Stotfold. Here are a few pictures taken from the weekend - if you didnt mange to make it down this year, it should give you a flavour of the event - most certainly one for the 2020 diary! Thank you to Nikki Williams for some of these wonderful pictures and to the team at Stotfold Mill for inviting us along once again to join in the fun!

Central Bedfordshire Council agree to consult on changes to schools in Stotfold and surrounding area. The Council, headteachers and governing bodies across Shefford, Stotfold and surrounding area have developed a joint plan for schools for the future. The plan, endorsed by the Council’s Executive today for public consultation, proposes changes to schools as part of a long-term plan to meet demand of new housing growth.
Stotfold and Shefford is an area that is set to grow with around 5,400 new homes set to be built over the next 10-15 years. This growth would mean an additional 3,500 new school places will be needed. Over the past year, all schools in the area have been working collectively with each other and Central Bedfordshire Council to shape the Schools for the Future programme, which is designed to ensure that the area has the right schools, in the right places to deliver the best education to children. The proposals would effectively move the schools to a primary/secondary model. If the plan is agreed, all 17 lower schools would become primary schools and the current upper school, the two extended middle schools and two middle schools to become secondary schools. All of the schools in Shefford, Stotfold and surrounding area want to take this opportunity move to the primary /secondary school model.
Cllr Sue Clark, Executive Member for Families, Education and Children, said: “We know that Stotfold and Shefford will see significant growth in the coming years and that’s why it’s really important that we have a shared plan to meet this demand. "Whilst this is a significant change, it’s a positive move that would increase the capacity of each school, allowing them to grow and accommodate additional school places and provide great education for all our pupils in the future." "We want to hear from everyone with an interest in the future of education in our area when the consultation is open later this month.” The consultation begins on Tuesday October 29 and will close at 5pm on 20 January. Schools in our immediate area included in the plan: St. Mary's Academy, Stotfold. Fairfield Park Lower School, Stotfold Gothic Mede Academy, Arlesey Roecroft Lower School,Stotfold Henlow Academy. Etonbury Academy Pix Brook Academy Samuel Whitbread Academy

Such A Good Afternoon Club! Several months ago we received a telephone call from Rachel at Stotfold Library asking us if we would like to be the guest speaker at the monthly Good Afternoon Club held at Stotfold Library. The club takes place on the first Wedneaday of every month and is open to all, new members are always welcome and transport can even be provided. Each time the club meets they welcome a different guest speaker, covering a huge variety of interesting topics. The talks last half an hour and the group then have time to chat over coffee and cake.
During our afternoon we chatted about the history of the Good afternoon club members. Stotfold News Magazine and its progress over almost fifteen years of delivering in Stotfold. We chatted, laughed and throughly enjoyed the feedback received from this super group of friendly ladies. We even had a few prizes to give out along the way. Plans are already in place for us to return next year for another ‘Good Afternoon Club’ visit and of course more cake! If you, or anyone you know would like to find out more about joining in with this lovely group of both men and ladies please contact Stotfold Library on 0300 3008068. The next club is due to be held on Wednesday 6th November and is a talk based on Bedfordshire Wildlife by Steve Halton from the Central Bedfordshire Council Countryside’s team. Steve will be talking about the amazing wildlife right on our doorstep here in Bedfordshire!

Stotfold Watermill
A weekend of surprises ……. and Joy to come!
October began with the Working Steam Weekend at Stotfold Mill and it turned out to be a weekend that held one or two surprises. Probably the first surprise was that despite the foreboding forecasts earlier in the week the weather turned out to be dry for the most part across both days and we even saw spells of sunshine. During Saturday many of us were discarding the warm outer clothing that we out put on early in the day. Our very sincere thanks to everyone, both local residents and many from much further afield, who turned out to support the event. We hope that you found it an interesting, enjoyable and worthwhile day out. If you sadly missed the event you can still see it all on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages with hundreds of photos and videos.
This brings us to the second surprise of the weekend. We are aware that the event attracts visitors from some distance but we were a little surprised to talk to a farmer from Ireland, who has his own collection of five tractors and had flown over for the weekend to just visit us. It was his third time of coming to the show. How much further will our reputation spread? Probably the most satisfying surprise was that after all our worries that we might lack the staff to man the many essential tasks – setting up the field, marshalling, car parking etc, etc. – enough volunteers came forward to make the weekend a success. In particular, I was pleased to chat to the very pleasant group of young people who had been working in the car park. Many thanks to all of you., Despite the suggestion in the local press a few months back that it might not take place, we are well ahead with planning for the Steam and Country Fair next May. This bigger occasion will need an even larger team of volunteers over the weekend but also now to help with planning for the event. Young or old, please do not hesitate to come forward and join us by going to our website www.stotfoldmill.com/volunteer for more details and calling 01462 734541 or emailing volunteersupport@stotfoldmill.com. We really appreciate our volunteers so please do join us. We still have a few things to look forward to before we finally start our winter shut down. During this time you are still able to purchase Mill flour and Oats from Beale’s Butchers in regent Street. On our final Sunady of opening we anticipated a visit from up to 100 cars from the MG owners club. We hope they enjoyed their time here and you were able to inspect some of the splendid vehicles they came in. You might still be in time to join in the Halloween treasure hunt to be held in the nature reserve Saturday 26th October 3:00pm to 5:00 £2.00per child adults go free! Children must be accompanied by an adult. Hot dogs and Free NHS Flu vaccination available spiced apple juice will be on sale. for eligable patients The very last event at the mill for this year will be our Victorian Carol Evening on Friday 6th December, featuring FREE Prescription delivery the brilliant Hitchin-based choir JUBILATE!, who will be raising the rafters in the Mill with a Victorian-themed carol service to ALL Arlesey and concert. More information and details of how to obtain Stotfold residents tickets, costing £10 including hot mince pies and mulled wine can be found on our website, www.stotfoldmill.com.

Remember, Remember, To Care For Your Animals This Bonfire Night. Article kindly supplied to the Stotfold News Magazine by Henlow Vets.
It is estimated that approximately 45 per cent of dogs become stressed and fearful while fireworks are going off, yet many owners are unaware of how to help their pets with firework fears and the precautions that can be taken to help them cope. Signs of anxiety in dogs include: ● trembling and shaking ● licking of lips ● panting ● chewing objects ● clinging to owners ● cowering and hiding ● unable to settle ● trying to dig ● barking excessively ● urinating or defecating
What can dog owners do to help their pet? An important step is to ensure the dog has a safe haven or den to retreat to. Ideally this should be in an internal room that is easily accessible and away from windows. The den can be a place that the dog already uses and adapted to be as comfortable, dark and quiet as possible, or a manmade temporary option such as a cardboard box or crate. Preparing a den in advance allows the dog to get used to the area and accept it as a safe place. Whatever format of den is chosen it is also advisable to use towels and/or blankets to cover the area to dim the sounds and lights of the fireworks and ensure the dog has access to the den at all times (even when the owner is not at home).
There are many products sold to help appease anxious dogs. Adaptil® and Yucalm have been shown to reduce anxiety and help dogs cope with challenging situations, including firework events. There are also anxiety wraps, such as “Thundershirt” available which can be fitted prior to the fireworks event. It is important to remember that a product’s ability to reduce fear responses may be reduced if the dog is already anxious. Top Tips Ensure dogs are taken out for a walk/to the toilet before it LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT gets dark and before fireworks begin. Having a meal before the fireworks start can also help as a dog may not want to eat during the event if they are too anxious. Dear Editor
Through your magazine we wish to express how saddened the team at Teasel were by the untimemely death of Dave Moule.

Through Teasel he gave his time freely to help the community and will be missed by the friends that he made whilst on the conservation projects. We thank Dave’s family who have kindly given a generous donation to Teasel in Dave’s memory. Our thoughts are with his wife and family at this difficult time.
All at Teasel, Stotfold.
Editors note: We would also like to send our sincere condolences to Andree and family. Dave was a friend to the Stotfold News Magazine and we have enjoyed many letters and fantastic photographs from Dave over the years. We were also very saddened to hear the passing of a lovely man.
We just wanted to share the wonderful experience we had a Box of Cakes in Stotfold this weekend. Emma and the team hosted our daughters 16th Birthday breakfast for 19 of our family members, breakfast was fantastic, service was brilliant, venue looked great all served with a smile and great value for money – The café is like a hidden gem within Stotfold would thoroughly recommend everybody visits (you can even take your dog in so why not stop for a cuppa during a dog walk).
Thanks again Emma!
Mandy McCracken.

Police encourage drivers and horse riders to be aware of each other this autumn
Bedfordshire Police is working with The British Horse Society (BHS) and Bedfordshire Horsewatch to encourage both drivers and riders to be more aware of each other on the roads this autumn. There has been a marked increase in reports of incidents to the BHS in Bedfordshire involving horses; from one reported in 2017/2018 to seven reported in 2018/2019.
The majority of road incidents that have been reported to the BHS occurred because a vehicle passed too closely to a horse. As a result, the Dead Slow campaign was launched to educate drivers on how to safely pass horses on roads. There are also a number of things horse riders can do to keep themselves safe.
PC Grant Hayes, from the rural community policing team, said: “This autumn, we want to encourage both motorists and horse riders to be more aware of each other on our county’s roads. “There has been a significant increase in incidents involving horses reported over the last two years and we want to reduce this as much as we can by educating drivers on how to pass a horse safely and also reiterating to riders tips they can take to keep themselves safe.”
Alan Hiscox, Director of Safety at The British Horse Society said: “Last year alone, national statistics show that 87 horses and four people were killed on UK roads and 73 percent of the 845 incidents reported to the BHS occurred due to vehicles passing by too closely. “By collaborating with Bedfordshire Police, we are hoping more drivers will be aware that when they are faced with a horse on the road they should slow down to a maximum of 15mph, be patient and ensure they pass the horse wide and slow, before driving slowly away. Advice for both drivers and horse riders to stay safe on the roads includes slowing down to a maximum speed of 15mph, be patient, don’t sound your horn or rev your engine, pass the horse wide and slow and if safe to do so, allow at least a car’s width if possible and finally drive away slowly.
The BHS is asking riders to always wear hi-viz clothing and put hi-viz equipment on your horse, avoid riding in failing light, fog or darkness or when it is snowing or icy unless absoultely necessary and show courtesy to drivers. To report an incident, you can visit the BHS reporting tool or email our Rural Policing team on opsentinel@bedfordshire.pnn.police.uk Find out more about the Dead Slow campaign on the BHS website.

We would like to thank everyone who attended our coffee morning on Saturday 7th September for the Macmillan Cancer Support. During the morning over 40 friends, neighbours and acquaintances drank tea and coffee, sampled a variety of homemade cakes and chatted. We raised over £450 for this very worthy cause. Bob and Bev Harrold.
Thank You Stotfold
Thanks are due to all those who joined in the ‘Stotfold Big Tidy Up’ on Saturday 14th September and to Melanie Cheney and the 3rd Stotfold Brownies who helped a few days before. A total of over 12 bags of litter were removed from our streets which was fantastic.
Look out for dates of the next ‘Tidy Up’ in 2020 when we hope that with your help even more streets can be cleared. On the same evening a well-attended and thoroughly enjoyable Quiz Night was held at the Greenacres Centre to raise funds towards the towns Christmas Lights display. Lyn & Steve Hayes were our excellent quizmaster and scorer for the evening where £437 was raised thanks to the support of our residents and their friends.
This year’s light display, along with the indoor market and activities, will be held at the Greenacres Centre on Saturday 30th November, look out for the posters giving details and we hope to see you there. Cllr. Alan Cooper – Stotfold Mayor

Dear Editor,
Please convey my thanks to all those who attended the Macmillan Coffee Event at St.Mary's Church on September 27th. Over 60 residents enjoyed the delicious coffee and yummy cakes made by the pupils of The Academy of Central Bedfordshire, whilst at the same time appreciating the company of other residents who rarely get out unless transport is available. Apart from raising much needed funds for the Macmillan Cancer Support it was a very lovely social event for all those who attended. Our thanks go to Jo Martin and all the courteous and helpful students from ACB who looked after us. Also many thanks to the SGNG drivers who helped with transport and Rev'd Bill Britt and Rev'd Graham Clark who kindly loaned us the church and made it ready for the event.
The generous donations from everyone who attended raised more than £344 for the Macmillan Cancer Support. Many thanks to everyone who made it such a successful event.

News from
The Academy Of Central Bedfordshire At the end of the summer term we received our third inspection by OFSTED and were pleased to receive our third consecutive ‘GOOD’ judgement. The OFSTED letter is available on our website. It is probably best summarised by the wonderful comment from a parent of one of our pupils; ‘ACB is an amazing school. They are all about the students and work hard to give them structure and confidence, which gives them the ability to achieve and strive.’
Year 11 students achieved impressive English GCSE results at Stotfold ACB, continuing the yearly progression since the school opened. More students achieved higher level GCSE English Language qualifications than in previous years. We had a greater number of students sitting the GCSE Literature exams this year with all passing, many at the higher level. Overall the results were very pleasing. Despite the increasing difficulty of the new gcse and the corresponding increase of marks required for each grade, 85% of the Stotfold students entered for their GCSE left with a pass in Maths. All of our students also achieved a Functional Skills qualification with an incredible 87% of our cohort achieving a minimum of Level 1 and 26% achieving a minimum of Level 2. The combination of both qualifications ensured that 95% of our students achieved or exceeded their predicted outcomes.
Members of the 1st Stotfold Scout Group meet pigs Penelope & Mathilda.
The introduction of Biology GCSE for our KS4 students has been particularly successful this year with 100% of the students entered for a GCSE achieving a pass. The introduction of a second GCSE in Science allowed one of our students to achieve 5 GCSEs grade 5 for the first time in the history of ACB. This season sees the beginning of garden clearance as the students harvest any crops that survived the dry summer period. Planning for the next growing year is focused on edible perennials, a range of annual vegetables, and companion flowers to attract helpful insects. The polytunnel is being reconfigured to enable a very small weatherproof outdoor classroom space, and a sowing and propagation area. Outside we are also trialling some very new initiatives, growing a feed crop for the goats, and building a new salad crop system. The school is very grateful for any donations of either edible plants or seeds.
We would like to thank all of the kind hearted people who live in our local community who have already donated fruit and vegetables for our animals. Through your generosity our animals have been able to enjoy a variety of foods over the past six weeks and have enjoyed the company of our neighbours who have popped in to say hello. We look forward to welcoming local groups from the community to join us in educational talks and meet and greets with the animals. DOMESTIC GAS AND HEATING ENGINEER

We were delighted to have the Cubs from the 1st Stotfold Scout Group visit us in September, our pigs Penelope and Mathilda were pleased to meet them. Thank you for your continued support, it means so much to the staff, the animals and the pupils of the ACB.

The students have embraced their learning with positive attitudes, and we have been delighted to introduce our praise text system to inform our parents/carers of their hard work in subject areas every week. Staff also enjoy hearing about the individual student successes at a briefing every Friday.
Our community are invited to follow our Twitter account to hear our praise text news. We have also been celebrating the news of being part of the first Multi Academy Trust to receive the ‘Governor Mark’, well done to all those that contributed, including many from the Etonbury Governing Body.
Etonbury Juniors have been busy this half term learning about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in year 5, and Year 6’s topic ‘It’s Electrifying’, have been reading Stormbreaker. They have also participated in a fun run to raise money for Sportsaid and Etonbury Academy Community Association, an exciting afternoon was had by all. Our students play an important part in contributing to the success of our school, so shortly we will be interviewing for our newly structured Student Leadership team to support future improvement projects at the school. We will keep you updated on this recruitment in the next issue. Our Year 8 students have been taking on the role of receptionist, so those of you that have been visiting may have seen them busy taking visitors around. Our calendar is filling up with an array of events and activities including Christmas performances, a careers fair, trips to Borough Market and Tate Modern. 106 of our students entered in to ‘The Big Draw’, a national Art competition -Good luck to all our students and to any of you in our community who are participating, we would love to hear about your successes too. Black History month is being celebrated through assemblies this month, and will be followed by a ‘Wear red day’ where we are proud to be supporting the anti-racism education charity, Show Racism the Red Card. The foundations of our success are built through our hardworking students, staff and the support of our community. To keep up to date with our work, follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook. We would also welcome you sharing our recruitment opportunities and successes. ETA WAY- Everyone is respectful – Together we care – Always aim higher.

Roecroft Lower School. The children have had an incredibly busy term of extra-curricular activities and were very much in need of their half term break. Our 90 reception children deserve a special mention, they have worked incredibly hard to settle at school and get used to new surrounds and routines. They are a talented bunch who have been kept extra busy learning and exploring.
Values education is still very much at the heart of what we do at Roecroft and this month we have discussed the values of respect, perseverance, understanding and unity. Our children are growing up to be responsible, respectful and active citizens of Stotfold. They make me very proud. Year 3s at our recent Stone Age Day An Update from the Key Stage 2 Team: Year 3 started their new history topic ‘Stone Age to Iron Age’ by having a whole day exploring the Stone Age. They started by finding out when the Stone Age was, then looked at artefacts, explored the evolution of humans, discussed prehistoric animals and found out how archaeologists piece together the past. They looked fantastic in their costumes and thoroughly enjoyed their day. In English, the children have been writing non-chronological reports about their class birds, using interesting openers and different sentence types. In Science, Year 3 have been learning about Light and Shadows. They investigated different materials and used a data logger to record the amount of light each material reflected. Year 4 started their Romans topic with a visit from Proximus, a Roman Centurion. During a very exciting day, the children learnt all about ancient Rome and life in Roman towns. In Science, Year 4 have been investigating states of matter, identifying the properties of solids, liquids and gasses. The children really enjoyed finding out what temperature was required to melt chocolate! They have also started their food tech module and will be making lots of delicious food this term, including pizza toast, couscous with peppers, and tasty-sounding carrot and orange breakfast muffins. Pix Brook Academy. A year has passed since we held the the first public meeting about the opening of Pix Brook Academy.
At that first meeting there were many questions about the reality of being able to open a new school by September. Everything necessary to make the pupils experience as full as possible was put in place. St Mary’s CE Academy November is another very busy month at St Mary’s!
Following the October break, the children return to school on Tuesday 29th October with a packed half term ahead. The week starts with Amethyst Class Assembly on Friday 1st November, as always families are invited to come and watch. The SMSA have also arranged 3 events during November, the first being a Film Night for Years 2 to 4 from 3.20pm to 5.00pm on Friday 1st followed by the ever popular Happy Bags collection fundraiser on Monday 25th November. This always proves to be a great way to raise money from clothes and items our community no longer need and are happy to donate. Last but not least is the annual Winter Wonderland Extravaganza Event planned for Friday 29th November from 5.00pm to 7.30pm. We hope to see you all there! On Wednesday 6th, Friday 8th, Wednesday 20th and Friday 22nd Diamond, Emerald, Coral and Moonstone Classes respectively will present their termly Assemblies to enthral us all. Whole school flu immunisations are planned for Thursday 7th November.
Week commencing 11th November offers our Parent/Staff Consultations. Although parents can visit and chat with staff on a daily basis, this enables them to have a dedicated talk about how children have settled in and the progress they are making.
We will once again support the BBC Children In Need event planned for Friday 15th. As always, we will be doing something fun to support and whatever we do, it is sure to be a great day and raise a lot of money for this worthy cause! We also have two school events planned at this time; a Viking and Anglo Saxon workshop for our year 4s on Tuesday 12th and a theatre trip to see ‘Charlotte’s Web’ for our KS1 children on Thursday 21st… activities we are sure they will all enjoy and benefit from. Alongside their education, our children are enjoying the many clubs that we offer. These include Multi-skills, Football, Gymnastics, Tennis, Homework, Karate, Art, Choir, Games, Computing, Sewing, Lego, Spanish and JAM. Premier Sport continues to come in to school to undertake the sports training with the children and we are delighted that there has been a tremendous response to all of our clubs. So from there we will be looking forward to December with preparations beginning for the Christmas Season!

Fairfield Park Lower School Well done to the new school council who have recently been voted by their class to represent them. Mrs Ward will be meeting with them regularly on Thursday mornings and our first priority will be showing our values by looking after our school. This will involve environment, behaviour, lunch and lost property monitors. After half term we will be working on the school council taking assemblies
Year 3 have enjoyed a fabulous Stone Age WOW day with a pop-up theatre in the drama studio. During the workshop, the pupils met some colourful characters: the world famous archaeologist Trimbold & a cave dweller. The pupils participated in an archaeological dig and explored the Stone Age, examining cave paintings and strange objects. They then met Uggh the cave dweller and considered how to communicate with him, as well as unravel the past. They were also given the opportunity to act out making fire, hunting wild beasts and being archaeologists. Year 4 have also enjoyed a WOW day and took part in a workshop to find out lots of interesting information about the Romans! They learnt about the way in which Romans travelled, how wealthy individuals purchased slaves and what they were expected to do. Following this learning, we they then transformed into members of the Senate and we made important decisions about the future of our land.
Children in Year 2 have taken part in walks of our local area, they planned their routes to different areas of Fairfield Park in class beforehand. The children navigated using their maps and thinking about compass directions, during the walks they spotted key features and landmarks.
A selection of children from Year 4 have also taken part in their Sports Leader training through our work with the Redborne Partnership. A group of children from KS1 had a fantastic morning at Samuel Whitbread Academy taking part in a multi skills tournament. They showed great team work and skills to complete different activities. KS2 recently played against five other schools at a Redborne Tag Rugby Event. The group of children were presented with a certificate for the respect they showed during the event. Well done to everyone who took part! Woody one of our Year 1 pupils one the First Step Colouring competition, he received an amazon voucher for £50 and the school also received a £100 donation – well done Woody and thank you First Step. World Championship Success for Stotfold Salon
Gemma Miles from award winning salon, Hair by Phillip recently entered the World Hairdressing Championships, held in Paris during September 2019. This isn’t the first time Gemma has entered a competition of this scale, the last time was in Berlin in 2000 and Gemma was placed highest Britain in her category. In addition, she was nominated for Student of the Year at the Pantene Pro-V Awards 2002, crowned Britsh Junior Champion in 1998, named as Britain's Best Bride runner up in 2012, and won the title of Welsh Bridal Champion in 2013.
This time around, representing Northern Ireland (as sadly GB no longer have a team), Gemma opted to enter in two technical categories; Senior Day Style and Hair by Night. Trained by her father, Phillip Parkin, a former Great British team Gemma pictured with her competition entry. member, Gemma spent hours practicing in preparation for the major event. Some countries still use traditional models, but many teams are now opting to use to use mannequin heads for the technical competitions, and Northern Ireland is one of them. Gemma’s mannequin head was carefully cut in advance, and coloured with Goldwell products. Gemma told the Stotfold News Magazine, “I am incredibly proud of my achievements at the World Championships - the standard was extremely high and it was an honour to be competing with many participants from around the globe! To finish in a very respectable 13th place overall totally blew my mind and surpassed all my expectations”. Gemma hopes to continue her professional competing journey and hopes to enter the British Championships in Blackpool in March 2020. The current school is a bespoke provison designed to provide up to 100 school places for year 5 pupils. It includes all the statutory elemnents required of a 21st century school and had undertaken pre-opening OFSTED inspection undertaken by a HMI and a Readiness to Open meeting at the DfE. The theme was ‘Create Your Dream Home.’ Entries were received from Roecroft Lower School, Fairfield Park Lower School, Gothic Mede Academy, Derwent Lower School, St Mary’s Church of England Academy and Langford Village Academy, The response from the schools was overwhelming and the level of artwork was amazing. The bundles of colouring cards were delivered to each school so that the students could complete the artwork over the Summer holidays. There were two categories age 5-6 years and age 7-9 years. From pencils, to felt pens, stickers and bobbles, all the pictures were fantastic!

Exploring Local Walks - The Hicca Way. written for the Stotfold News Magazine by Stotfold Resident Sarah Passey.
Part of the Etonbury Green Wheel route follows the Hicca Way as it wends its way along the banks of the River Hiz through Arlesey. After I walked the full Green Wheel route earlier in the year, I decided I would like to attempt some more of the Hicca Way route. The Hicca Way takes its name from a Saxon tribe—the Hicca—who lived on the banks of the River Hiz near Hitchin. Danish invaders who had settled at Etonbury, near where the rivers Hiz and Ivel meet, charged the Hicca a tax (to avoid being attacked!) and so the Hicca Way is an imagining of the route the tribe members might have taken to pay their tax.
The route follows as near as possible the River Hiz and passes through Charlton, Hitchin, Ickleford, Arlesey, and Henlow. The source of the river (and start of the Hicca Way) is the wellhead in Charlton village close to the old Windmill pub, outside which, there is an information board about the walk. The Hiz joins with the Ivel just past Henlow Bridge Lakes, which is where the Hicca Way ends. The route is waymarked with signs that look like stone arrowheads, with the arrow pointing the direction to walk. With my friend Marie for company, and on probably the wettest day we could choose, we caught the train from Arlesey to Hitchin to begin the walk.
From Hitchin station towards Ransoms Recreation Ground, we picked up the Hicca Way on Grove Road. It was quite easy at this point to spot the Hicca Way signs, which was fortunate because the area here is quite industrial and you might feel as if you were in the wrong place without them. The Hicca Way winds through this nature area, and paths go along the riverbank or through the meadow. Depending on how high the undergrowth is you can take any path you choose. We couldn’t beat a path along the river so enjoyed the meadow instead. With the railway line nearby, you are always reminded of your proximity to urban life, but it is great that we have these little green spaces for wildlife to flourish. We arrived in Ickleford, at a spot called Gerry’s Hole, (a pond formed after the Hitchin to Bedford railway line was built and named after a poor soul who drowned in the river after a night in the pub), which is now a conservation area for newts, toads, and other aquatic life. A wet stomp brought us out by the Lavender Farm and back to familiar ground. The Hicca Way crosses the road here between the farm and the equestrian centre, and it could be easy to become lost without a map or without careful watching for signs. Once on Ickleford Common, we followed the footpath along the river, then across arable fields almost towards Lower Stondon, before the path swung back along the river towards Arlesey. Following the river closely now, we came to Arlesey Old Moat and Glebe Meadows, an area that has been developed in the past few years into a wonderful nature area and is perfect for a family walk and picnic. Arlesey Station marked the end of our walk, which was just over 7 miles in total. This is a lovely route for exploring the local area, and is easily accessible from Stotfold via the Green Wheel.

Stotfold Bowls Club Celebrate Great Year. Sadly, another bowls season has come to an end, but 2019 has been a good year for the club. We have hosted a Middx v Bedfordshire Ladies County match, an EBL. M V L, game and the final of the Queen Reid K.O.Cup, playing County, League and friendly matches and having our usual social events. August saw us have our Annual Open Triples Day, following by our Charity Gala at the end of the month. September as always, brings us together for Presidents Day and club finals week-end 21/22nd when a very tight programme was completed despite the rain on Sunday. congratulations to all who took part! So now it’s time to pack your waterproofs, and thick sweaters away until 2020. As always, the season goes too quickly but unfortunately the English weather precludes bowling through the winter months, however much the green looks welcoming.
