WELCOME
As we move into a term and a new year, I would like to express my gratitude to the many volunteers who have contributed to the St Paul’s Community Programme so far. The contributions have been many and varied, whether participating in the Parents’ Group, or organising a year group reunion, or speaking on a specialist subject or hosting a professional network event. This commitment and expertise has helped us to multiply and diversify the events on offer, and there is still plenty of scope to branch out further. If you have access to a venue, or possess a specialism or skill you would be willing to speak about, or can offer up your time in another capacity, then please do contact the Development and Engagement Office. Our networking platform St Paul’s Connect presents another medium through which you can offer time, expertise and support. Please do sign up to the site, and register your interest in assisting our Eighth Form pupils and young OPs through mentoring, internships or just by offering careers advice. The younger members of our community can then search for and contact you. By actively connecting and engaging, we breathe more life into our community. Professor Mark Bailey High Master
Once again a very warm welcome to you all, we hope you enjoyed the Christmas break and are ready for some of the many events we have organised for Spring 2020. Our academic events take pride of place this term with our annual debate Pauline Perspectives and the biennial Whitting Lecture, this year delivered by Professor Bailey about the Black Death in England. We also continue the St Paul’s Masterclasses with both the Philosophy and Computing series. For those looking to socialise, the Parents’ Group will be hosting a number of coffee mornings across London, while the Old Pauline Club hosts the annual Feast Service. If you would like to see the school as the senior school build is completed, we welcome you to join our Open House Afternoon. Whatever your interest, we are confident that you will find something within this brochure to suit your taste and we look forward to seeing you soon. Ellie Sleeman Director of Development and Engagement

A Level Theatre Studies Showcase
St Paul’s Masterclass: Computing
Lower Eighth Subject Choices Monday 20 January
Tuesday 21 January
Wednesday 22 January
6.00pm Milton Studio, St Paul’s School
6.30pm Computer Labs, St Paul’s School
The A Level Theatre Studies students, inspired by Steven Berkoff’s highly physical and provocative performance style, have devised two separate pieces of theatre. The first, about the life of the notorious Kray brothers, and the second, the story of an innocent man, falsely accused of a crime, who is changed irrevocably by the justice system.
Head of Computing, Chris Harrison joins the St Paul’s Masterclass series, presenting the first of three sessions about computing. Over the course of three weeks, we will give you a brief introduction to coding in Python, a little insight into what happens inside the box when you power on your laptop and look at exactly what happens between the moment you type in a website address and your browser returns the result. The following two sessions will take place on Wednesday 29 January and Wednesday 5 February. No previous study of the subject is required.

The Parsons Lectures Tuesday 11 February 10.40am Wathen Hall, St Paul’s School Former England and Wasps rugby player, Kearnan Myall, made headlines this year when he discussed the significant mental cost that comes with playing high-level sport. In this lecture, he will talk to the pupils about how he managed stress in some very competitive environments and will discuss his tips for keeping happy and healthy. This lecture is dedicated to the memory of Harry Parsons (OP 2005-10) who passed away in 2013. St Paul’s Professional Networks The St Paul’s Professional Network Groups were first launched in collaboration with the Old Pauline Club and Parents’ Group. Their aim is to connect those working in specific professional fields and to support Paulines, partner schools and OPs in their career journeys. To date we have groups for Finance, Law, Medicine, Real Estate, Engineering and Research and have held events at locations such as JP Morgan, King’s Cross, UBS and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.
Join our community and connect online:
stpaulsconnect.org
We would love to hear from anyone who is interested in joining our group of Professional Advisors, to help shape the programme of the networks, link us with new and interesting venues or speakers, or simply to give valuable career advice or mentoring to recent leavers.
One way to do this is by joining St Paul’s Connect, at stpaulsconnect.org, the school’s dedicated networking platform. Upon signing up, members will be asked to indicate if and how they are willing to help. Please do take this opportunity to pass on your knowledge and expertise, or, if you are a young Old Pauline, browse the directory to find people who can help you kickstart your career. If you would like to discuss supporting the programme, please email: community@stpaulsschool.org.uk
