WELCOME TO SPL There’s been a lot of attention to home building, interior design and renovations in the last 18 months, but fall is traditionally a time when we like to plan for the future. Our Fall Homes package offers ideas and tips on updating and renovating, with an article on the very popular trend of creating home offices. As things move more or less closer to normal, we are feeling grateful for the small things these days. This issue takes a look at the busy fall seasons being planned in the arts community. Despite pandemic numbers surging around Tampa Bay, we find hope in announcements that performing arts seasons are starting up this fall with complete schedules and some festivals like Clearwater Jazz Holiday and Savor St. Pete have opted to return after a quiet year. While this is great news, it also comes with a caveat that we as audience members need to be cognizant and respectful of each venue’s safety requirements for masks and even vaccines. Most are acutely aware that attendees may be putting themselves and others at risk by attending and are setting forth guidelines. We should understand each venue’s requirements before purchasing tickets, and abide by them or not attend. Also in this issue we announce the opening of the long-awaited Museum of the American Arts & Crafts Movement downtown St. Pete. It’s a real stunner, you should put a visit on your calendar. And we visit the set to watch a large-release movie being produced in Pinellas County. It’s been 18 months of silence, and we are happy to welcome the film industry back. Happy reading,

ARTS & CULTURE
The highly-anticipated Museum of the American Arts and Crafts Movement (MAACM) in downtown St. Petersburg opened its doors Sept. 7. Founded and funded by local businessman, philanthropist and collector Rudy Ciccarelli, the museum is the first in the world dedicated to the American Arts and Crafts movement. The museum will showcase remarkable examples of fine and decorative art from the period which swept the country between 1890 and 1930. A reaction against the mass production of the Industrial Revolution, the movement promoted simple and functional designs, hand crafted with quality materials.

A stunning 137,000-square-foot building that houses the collection is a work of art itself. Designed by award-winning Tampa-based architect Alberto Alfonso, the fivestory museum features architectural elements such as a grand atrium, skylights, and a dramatic spiral staircase. Some 40,000 square feet of gallery space will feature both temporary and permanent exhibits including some of the rarest objects from the movement including furniture, pottery, tiles,
metalwork, lighting, leaded glass, paintings and photographs. A slate of programs is aimed at engaging the community with the collection, including Family Days on the first Saturday of each month, which include art making, performances and family-friendly guided tours. Third Thursdays will feature themed activities, performances, art making and demonstrations. The museum also features a café for coffee, light lunches and desserts, and Ambrosia, a fine dining restaurant with American and Italian cuisine. Both are open Tuesdays through Sundays. An events venue offers 3,700 square feet of space, and a Vintage Bar with an 18-foot Brunswick Mont Oro bar from 1900 and hand-crafted pub tables. The Museum of the American Arts and Crafts Movement is located at 355 4th Street N., St. Petersburg. The museum is closed on Monday; admission $25 adults, $23 seniors, $20 active military, fire, police, $10 youth 6-17, free for children 5 and under. (727) 943-9900; museumaacm.org

Warhol’s West at James Museum Andy Warhol and Western art? Yes, it’s true. We love how the James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art goes outside the box when presenting exhibits. Warhol’s West, opening October 2, is the perfect example, bringing forth examples of pop art icon Andy Warhol’s work in the Western realm. Warhol’s fascination with the American West may not be as recognized as his prints of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Mick Jagger and Elizabeth Taylor, but his work in the Western genre is wide-ranging and impressive. His series of portraits in Cowboys and Indians (1986) featuring famous names from Annie Oakley and Geronimo to Sitting Bull and Theodore Roosevelt (basically celebrities in their day) are just as powerful. Warhol’s West was organized by Booth Western Art Museum, Catersville, GA and the Cochran Collection, LaGrange, GA, and runs through January 9, 2022.
St. Pete Opera Curtain Rises St. Pete Opera moves back indoors for Season 16 with a number of outdoor concerts scheduled, too. Maestro Mark Sforzini will be holding the baton for three Mainstage operas: Mozart’s comedy Cosi fan Tutte October 15-19, Handel’s Semele February 4-8, and Donizetti’s La Fille du Regiment June 3-7. All will be performed at The Palladium’s Hough Hall. In addition, longtime Christmas favorite Holiday Sparkle will be back at three locations: December 11-12 at Cage Brewing, December 16-18 at Opera Central, and a POPera-style family friendly concert December 19 at North Straub Park. Broadway Cabaret will make its return, too, with a variety of performers and songs January 22 and May 21 at Opera Central. Pinocchio reaches out to youth November 13-14 and November 2021. And, applause please, both indoor and outdoor POPera performances will continue in February and April. For a complete schedule and to purchase tickets, go to stpeteopera.org or call (727) 823-2040.

Quality Construction with a Woman’s Touch Susanne Van Selow
Owner/Contractor of Van Selow Design/Build With over 18 years in the building and remodeling industry under her belt, Susanne Van Selow has built her business and her reputation based on “Quality construction with a woman’s touch”. As a member of the Tampa Bay chapter of NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry), Susanne has risen to the top of an industry traditionally run by men, and was elected President of NARI in 2010. She also earned top honors as NARI Remodeler of the Year in 2011. Susanne credits much of her success to her team, who has been working together on projects for years. “I plan the space and structure, and then the design team pulls everything together. From textures and colors they put the packages together with 3D renderings. We all collaborate during the design phase so when we go to construction, we’re all on the same page.” When asked what is trending right now in home design, Susanne sees more color being incorporated instead of relying on bright whites. “The modern look is very popular right now, although everyone’s take on what looks
modern differs. Clean lines and texture are the basics, but everyone has their own taste regarding a modern look. I recently did a very modern kitchen in oak. It’s about making our clients happy. Everyone has their own taste, and the client is the decision maker.” In an industry affected by rising material prices and labor shortages, Susanne says keeping lines of communication open with clients is key. “Delays in getting materials are longer than in previous years. We communicate with the homeowner, and often we can install temporary fixtures for the interim. If a delay is longer than the homeowner wants to wait, they may choose a different dishwasher, faucet or tile based on availability.” Giving back is also important to Van Selow Design/Build. Susanne supports Habitat for Humanity’s Hammers & Heels personally and as a corporate sponsor. Their mission: empower women to help families build strength, stability and independence. Their annual Women’s Build project provides a home built for a single mother by women in the community.

Movie Magic is Back PHOTOS/ROD MILLINGTON/ATOL Film LLC
Actors Erin Cahill and Martin Kove cook up some chicken and waffles in a scene from “A Taste of Love,” filmed around Dunedin in July.
After a year of silence, the film industry returns to Pinellas County BY MARCIA BIGGS It’s a late July morning and the heat and humidity in Tampa Bay is reaching “Excruciating” on the comfort scale, but it’s all smiles on the set of “A Taste of Love,” a full-length feature movie being filmed at the rooftop bar of the Fenway Hotel in Dunedin. The scene being shot might be Jordan’s 35th birthday party, but the astounding view is the real scene stealer — billowing clouds floating in a bluebird sky over picture-postcard Caladesi Island, seagulls swooping down to take a peek. Watching the action unfold is Tony Armer who helms the St. Petersburg Clearwater Film Commission. Armer is one happy camper lately. When the three weeks of filming for “A Taste of Love” wraps in Dunedin, the same production crew heads to St. Petersburg for another three weeks of shooting a Hallmark movie. The action is finally picking up for the film commission after a year and a half when the film industry came to a screeching halt thanks

to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Last week I was scouting locations for a film and by the end of this year will have done scouting for four different movies,” Armer says. “There’s a flood of interest now.” That’s good news for Pinellas County. Since Florida lacks a film incentive program, the St. Pete Clearwater Film Commission smartly devised a cash rebate incentive in 2005. The program, which has helped more than 1,800 production companies, pays up to 10% on qualified expenditures in Pinellas County’s 24 municipalities. The impact of producing films and commercials gives a boost to the local economy as film crews come and spend money on everything from lodging and food to truck and equipment rentals. Electrical, video and audio professionals get hired, as do local hair and makeup artists. “A Taste of Love” is expected to spend $1.5
SPL LIVING
And the attention that filming here brings, from the sparkling (usually) beaches of Clearwater to the charming historic neighborhoods of St. Petersburg, serves as a tourism calling card, an invitation to “come on down, we’re open for business.” Lincoln Lageson, a movie veteran and co-producer from Los Angeles, is here for his second film in the area. In “A Taste of Love,” he says, all locations are keeping their names, Dunedin is Dunedin and St. Pete is St. Pete, which offers buzz to these destinations once the movie is released. “Lots of times you go to places and you have to make them look like someplace else,” he explains. “In this movie and the next one in St. Pete, we get to embrace the locations and their character. They essentially have starring roles equal to any actor.”
Directors monitor the scenes shot on Clearwater Beach during shooting of “A Taste of Love.”
Despite the uptick in the delta variant, “things are really busy in Florida,” says Todd Yonteck, executive producer and founder of Digital Caviar, the independent Tampa Bay film production company that wrote, produced and directed “A Taste of Love.” But creating a safe environment for everyone involved on set, including dozens of extras each day, has been extensive, adding to staff, time schedules and costs. “All the guilds came together to form a protocol for filming,” he explains. “It divided actors into groups, with swab tests three times a week for everyone, masks mandatory. Twelve-hour days are typical, but the covid testing process took up to several hours.” (Even this reporter was required to undergo covid testing).

million locally, says Armer, and the Hallmark movie is expected to spend some $2 million.
Filming a scene from the movie at the rooftop bar at the Fenway Hotel in Dunedin.
Flash forward three weeks and the production crew is at it again, this time filming in and around St. Petersburg. Both “A Taste of Love” and the Hallmark movie (tentatively named “South Beach Love”) have similar storylines – family, food and romance. Both are feelgood movies centered on young chefs who reconnect with family and cook up unexpected romance. The Hallmark Network seems to be taking a shining to St. Pete and local environs. “True Love Blooms” was the first movie the network made locally in February 2019, followed by “Love in the Sun” in April 2019. Other Hollywood movies filmed here (pre-pandemic) include “Zola” (2018 but released this year), “Shark Season” (2020), “Fear of Rain” (2019), and the highly popular “Dolphin Tale” and “Dolphin Tale 2” (2010,2014). It appears our “Day in the Sun” (pun intended) has arrived once again.

DINING OUT
Ceviche Opens on Beach Drive
Let’s Meat
Ceviche Tapas Bar & Restaurant has opened in new digs at 332 Beach Drive in the former Moon Under Water location. The new restaurant has a completely refreshed modern interior, with an outdoor patio and a menu featuring both popular favorites and updated items. New are a carving station and a temperature-controlled wine locker with room for some 750 bottles. Former Sea Salt sommelier Jackie Eash is now at the helm as beverage manager overseeing an extensive array of fine wines with a nod, of course, to Spain. Kudos to Ceviche for being selected one of TripAdvisor’s 2021 Travelers’ Choice Award restaurants.
St. Pete Meat & Provisions, a new specialty grocery by Chef David Benstock at Il Ritorno, is bringing fresh meat, eggs, cheese and charcuterie to 449 Central Avenue. Partnering with local farms committed to practicing sustainably with no herbicides or pesticides and the humane treatment of animals, the whole animal butchery offers cuts from beef, poultry, pork, house-made sausages, bison, lamb and veal. You can also find a selection of cheese and charcuterie, farm fresh eggs, dressings, sauces, marinades, fresh pasta, seasonings, rubs, oils, honey, jams, and hot sauces.
Food Hall Redux
With little fanfare but much regret, the management team behind the new 22 South Food Hall announced July 21 on social media that downtown St.
Pete’s only food hall operation was closing immediately. The unexpected death of partner Vincent Jackson in February was a financial and supportive blow that partners from the Callaloo Group could not withstand. Since opening in April, the food hall inside the historic Manhattan Casino in the Deuces neighborhood had widespread support as an incubator for culinary startups and entrepreneurs. When word spread of its closing, however, community leaders quickly responded. Within weeks, a consortium of new partners calling themselves Urban Collective joined in to help formulate a plan to re-open the establishment. Details were limited at the time this issue went to print, but it appears 22 South has been saved. Check their Facebook page to keep updated on a new opening date.

Owners Johan Everstijn and Roland Strobel plan to reinvent a new Cider Press Vegan Gastropub in Kenwood in the former location of Georgie’s Alibi. While maintaining much of the current menu, the expanded space will allow for a larger kitchen, much more indoor seating and include a covered patio bar. We expect good things to come. Stay tuned for opening details.
If you’re dreaming of the Chicken Tikki Masala or Balti Madras Curry from the now closed Moon Under Water, wake up and smell the spice. Former executive chef Mike Crippin of the popular British restaurant on Beach Drive has opened The Studio Public House in a former recording studio in Grand Central District. A broad menu of pub grub including piledhigh sandwiches, creative salads and yes, a selection of Indian and British faves are on the menu, a mean vindaloo, bangers and mash, shepherd’s pie and that awesome curry chicken salad. The casual, neighborhood pub offers a small but decent selection of beers and wine, and live music on weekends. Just look for the colorful British bulldog mural at 2950 Central Avenue. There’s even a kid’s menu. Cheers, mate!
CORRECTION: In the July/August issue, a Food Brief on 400 Beach Seafood & Tap House had incorrect information. The new owners are Shawn and Jeanna Damkoehler. They have partnered with Volet Hospitality whose President is Jacob Linzey. Ashley Castillo is the Director of Operations for Volet.

DINING OUT
How to Select the Prop er Wine Glass BY WILL HOWARD The difference between drinking your favorite wine from a poorly designed glass and a perfectly designed glass will make a world of difference. To me it’s the same effect as wearing a nice, flawlessly fitted outfit when going out on a date. The glassware can highlight the best parts of the wine and make you feel great while you drink it. A bad wine glass is too heavy, clumsy, or just the wrong shape. The best wine glasses are no secret. Just look at which glasses great restaurants are using. Reidel, Schott Zwiesel, Zalto, and Mark Thomas wine glasses are widely used in restaurants with serious wine programs. From Michelin Star restaurants to your local wine bar, these are the glasses that are being used. You feel the difference as soon as you touch one of these glasses. And yes, they really do make the wine taste better. That is exactly what they were designed to do. Reidel is the gold standard in glassware. Reidel have been pushing the limits on what a wine glass can do since at least 1958 when they began creating varietal specific glassware and they have been in business for nearly 300 years. The price of Reidel glasses varies depending on the collection, but they are not cheap. The value with Reidel is in the shape and design. Costs are saved by producing glasses by machine rather than some of the other high end mouth blown glassware. Schott Zwiesel creates elegant handmade glassware used in some of the finest hotels and restaurants around the world. Schott Zwiesel is a German company and is used exclusively by the Association of German Quality and Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP) when testing the quality of German wines. These glasses offer a particularly well balanced glass that is elegant, yet durable.

Zalto is the glass that goes a little bit over the top with perfectly balanced, featherlight glass and precise angles. Zalto wine glasses might not be the glasses to use at a rowdy dinner party, but they really do make each sip of wine feel like a magical experience if you are alright with spending about $60 per glass. To really splurge on beauty and elegance, then look no further than the glasses by Mark Thomas. These glasses sacrifice the varietal specificity offered by Riedel and the durability of Schott Zweisel, but they definitely make an impression. The Double Bend series by Mark Thomas is a weightless, mouth-blown, beauty of a glass at about $80 per glass. Shape Matters There are magnitudes of wine glass shapes and styles available for every style of wine, but it’s probably best to start with the necessities. I think there are four essential wine glasses for the average wine lover’s home bar. Flutes, white wine glasses, red wine glasses, and burgundy glasses. Flutes are typically preferred for bubbles of all types because the tall narrow glass focuses the effervescence of the wine and creates long, beautiful strings of bubbles. White wine glasses are slightly smaller and narrower than an average wine glass with a tulip like shape. The idea with a typical white wine glass is to express freshness in the wine and limit the wine from being flabby. Red wine glasses or Bordeaux glasses should be large, yet thin and light. The size isn’t larger in design so that you can fit more in the glass, although that can be helpful, too. The larger size gives enough space to swirl a heavy red wine and increase the amount of air between the wine and your nose when taking a sip.
DINING OUT A Burgundy glass is an even larger, fish bowl shaped glass. This is called a Burgundy glass because it is best suited for pinot noir and chardonnay, but the shape also works great with nebbiolo, grenache, and many other varietals. The large bowl shape is designed to highlight the fruit aromas while tempering the acidity of the wine. Top Glass Picks Although it’s probably best to have matching glassware, I think that each style should be highlighted for what they do best. These are my picks for best glass in each of the four basic styles, as well as a pairing to highlight each glass. Flute - Schott Zwiesel Champagne Flute is a classic flute shape without deviation from tradition. The feel of the stem is light and delicate, with perfect balance all around. The glass is tall and narrowing toward the top with a dip in the bottom to create the perfect bubbles. My wine for this glass is Deutz Champagne Blanc de Blancs because it also has perfect balance without deviation from tradition. Notes of citrus, marcona almonds, and green apple lifted by a waterfall of fine bubbles. White Wine Glass - Zalto White Wine Glass with Zind Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Calcaire. The precise angles are a sign of Zalto glasses and it is evident on this glass. The shape will highlight lighter bodied white wines like riesling, gewürztraminer, and sauvignon
banc. The glass highlights the aromas of peach, apricot, and honey on this delicious gewürztraminer. Red Wine Glass - Mark Thomas Double Bend Allround with Matthew Wallace Cabernet Sauvignon, Regusci Ranch, Stags Leap District. This glass puts on a show, just like the wine. The wine is explosive with dark fruit and sweet tobacco on the nose. The aroma is accentuated by the large bowl of the glass and stunning angles. Burgundy Glass - Reidel Veritas Old World Pinot Noir with François Gaunoux, Pommard, 1er Cru Les Epenots. This is the Burgundy glass that every other Burgundy glass should be modeled after. The thin stem if effortless to raise. The glass is large enough to funnel in the scent of the wine, giving maximum air contact. The wine is a bold and tannic brut of a Burgundy, but with enough air the layers open within minutes. Smells of cigar box, fall leaves, and soft red fruit. 4 Steps in Selecting a Moving Company St. Pete Life Magazine recently named Big Man’s Moving Company the “Best of St. Pete”. We asked owners, Brooke and Josh Anderson, for some must-ask questions when interviewing movers to compare apples to apples: Step 1: Interpreting “Licensed and Insured”: Companies always say they are “licensed and insured”, however there is much more to the phrase. Company A is cheaper than the rest and their “licensed and insured” means they have a business license from the state of FL (Sunbiz.org) and insurance on their trucks. This does not protect the customer. Big Man’s is licensed and insured with workers compensation on their W2 employees, general liability insurance, and cargo insurance. Big Man’s has a DOT #, and an IM # for intrastate moves, and an MC # for interstate moves.
Step 2: Who is coming into your home? Company A uses 1099 independent contractors (basically day laborers from Craigslist) who can be mowing lawns one day, bartending the next, and moving homes the following day. This information is never openly offered to the consumer. Big Man’s employs full time, professional, uniformed movers who have been drug tested and background checked. They have a history of success with the company. Step 3: Reliability: Has the mover ever “no showed” on moving day or canceled a move? Red flag!!! There are several factors that can give you peace of mind: • Agreement upon booking- Does the moving company send a contract to e-sign upon booking so they must legally show up? Do they take a deposit? • # of Movers- Some companies always send 3 movers on a truck. Why? If someone calls in sick, the move can still go on! Big Man’s will never cancel due to lack of manpower. • Reliable Trucks- When doing your research, did you see photos of the moving trucks? Did they look newer and well maintained? Another main reason movers cancel: truck maintenance issues. Step 4: Research: Have you read reviews on Google, Facebook, BBB, etc? Moving is a human business and sometimes mistakes happen, but reputable companies consistently maintain a 4.5-5 star ratings on all of the major sites. Has the company won any awards? Is it easy to research the company? Do they have a professional website? Big Man’s Moving Company has performed over 3,800 successful local, statewide, and out-of-state moves since inception in January 2017 and was voted “Best of St Pete” by St. Pete Life Magazine and #1 Mover in Tampa Bay 2 consecutive years by readers of the Tampa Bay Times. To Market We (Hope To) Go As we head into fall, the season when outdoor markets generally gear up, it’s hard to be certain what the rest of the year holds in store. Many markets closed or suffered losses and hardships through the pandemic the last season. Now, with less mandates and more open businesses, our fingers are crossed that local outdoor markets will return.
Here, we take a look at St. Pete’s market scene heading into this fall. Be forewarned, managers and vendors may decide at any time to close, change hours or drop out. We suggest you check online or social media before heading out.
Saturday Morning Market Since opening in 2002, St. Pete’s Saturday Morning Market has established itself as a beloved institution, a regular weekly gathering spot for downtown residents to grab breakfast or lunch, pick up some fresh produce, cheese and baked goods, roam through plants, hats, crafts and clothing, and listen to some homegrown music.
“We plan to open and operate as usual, as long as it’s safe to do so,” said market manager Gail Eggeman.
- Marcia Biggs GULFPORT PHOTOS/LARRY BUSBY
From October through May, the market attracts thousands of people from across Tampa Bay every weekend (except during Grand Prix). Some 140 vendors from as far away as Punta Gorda have been coming every year to set up early Saturday mornings in the Al Lang Field parking lot, where the market is held. During summer months a smaller version of the market moves to Williams Park. Last year, things looked a lot different. After shutting down completely, fences went up to monitor attendees, masks were mandatory, and tables and chairs had been removed; there was no live music. Still, the regulars came, pushing strollers, walking dogs, greeting friends and neighbors. What will the Saturday Morning Market look like this fall when it opens October 2?

Saturday Morning Market opens October 2 and runs weekly from 9 am to 2 pm in the Al Lang Field parking lot at the corner of 1st Street S. and 1st Avenue S.
SPL LIVING Worth Mentioning Vintage Marché, Tampa Bay’s largest monthly vintage flea market, has gained dedicated fans from both sides of the pond since it started in 2013 as Brocante Vintage Market. Held the first weekend of every month in a 15,000-square-foot warehouse in the Warehouse Arts District, Vintage Marché is jam packed with more than 50 vendors hawking antiques, trash and treasures from all eras — it’s up to you to sift through it all. Here you’ll find everything from furniture to lamps, vases, toys, china and cookware, glassware and bottles, holiday displays and ornaments, clothing and hats, paintings and clocks, well, you get the picture. Set aside a couple hours and wear comfortable shoes.
First Friday Art Walks along Beach Drive offer the perfect opportunity to stroll the shops and pop in at one of the many dining and drinking establishments in the cooler evening hours from 5 to 9 pm. The vendors are vetted to encourage higher quality arts and crafts in a juried event. Live music is everywhere, along with welcoming locals and proprietors who serve as cheerleaders for this laid-back town on Boca Ciega Bay. To find your favorite new gecko earrings and some holistic lotions and potions, the festive Third Saturday IndieFaire Night Market is worth checking out every month from 5 to 9 pm along Beach Drive. For more information on Gulfport markets and art walks, plus a lot more, go to visitgulfportflorida.com

Gulfport Markets Over in fun-loving Gulfport, the market scene is thriving with support from the Gulfport Merchants Chamber. Four markets operate on a weekly or monthly basis. Every week from 9 am to 2 pm year-round, the Gulfport Tuesday Fresh Market brings vendors from across the region offering fresh produce, jewelry, handmade arts and crafts, botanicals and other unique items in an open-air market along Beach Boulevard, the town’s main street. A Fourth Saturday Fresh Market open from 9 am to 2 pm July through October is a recent addition (dates for 2022 were undecided). It’s similar to the Tuesday Fresh Market along Beach Drive.
Get a sneak peek at the goods during First Dibs Friday when a limited amount of tickets are sold for $5 allowing entry between 4 and 8 pm (it’s refundable when you purchase an item). Otherwise, join the throngs from 9 am to 6 pm Saturday and 9 am to 5 pm Sunday. Located at 2200 2nd Avenue S. To learn more, go to vintagemarche727.com
Over on St. Pete Beach, the Corey Avenue Sunday Market attracts locals and visitors year-round from 10 am to 2 pm. Dozens of vendors sell everything from fresh produce and baked good, organic products, flowers and plants to clothing, jewelry, arts and crafts. It’s an easy stroll to find shade or a bite to eat at one of the nearby boutiques or eateries. Better yet, you’re just a few minutes from one of the nation’s top beaches, so plan to make a day of it. Look for the vendor tents set up along 300 Corey Avenue. Relatively new to the St. Pete market scene is the Deuces Sidewalk Market, in the historic Deuces District. The small outdoor pop-up market at 833 22nd Street S. has a changing lineup of mainly arts and crafts vendors each Sunday from 1 to 4 pm.

SPL HEALTH
Matching internal beauty with external beauty Someone asked me the other day, “Is it possible to reverse aging?” I answered very affirmatively “ Yes!” My name is Elvira Wright. I am the owner of Medispa Wright Aesthetics. Growing up in a small town in Russia where the government builds nuclear submarines, we were constantly exposed to high radiation. Later, I graduated from Medical University and joined the healthcare system as a pharmacist with a high paying but equally high stress level job. No wonder when I checked my biological age (how old I am inside and how much my body had worn out) I discovered that I was 70 years old, while chronologically (by birth certificate) I was only 46 years old at that time. It was a wakeup call for me. The next 18 years I did everything possible to undo the damage and rejuvenate myself not only from the outside but mostly important on the inside. I graduated as a Fellow in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine from American Academy of Anti-Aging, obtaining certification with Peptide therapy, cardiovascular intensive course, weight loss program and hormonal adjustment courses just to name a few. I believe our bodies have a tremendous power to heal itself. Instead of being a pharmacist, I became a detective who is looking for the causes of disease. A couple years ago, I decided to change the field from “Sickness Industry” to Wellness Industry. I obtained my esthetician license and became a certified trichologist – a specialist on scalp and hair disorders. I left the hospital behind and opened my dream place, a boutique and unique medical spa where I practice what I learned and experimented on myself.

and confidante Pierre Argillet, and the distinguished Curator of the Collection. Madame Argillet will take guests of the gallery on a story-filled journey from her childhood spent with Dali, filled with intimate and anecdotal tales of a collaboration and friendship that spanned five decades; and produced what art historians have termed “the finest bodies of the Master’s Art”. This collection made available by the Argillet Estate is...truly… a privilege and an opportunity for the collector to own a prominent piece of Dali’s legacy. Salvador Dali’s openmindedness and innate ability to embrace a plethora of topics and themes can also be seen in his etchings and drawings, which address different topics, from religion to eroticism. Pierre Argillet’s daughter, Christine Argillet, spent much of her childhood in the presence of Salvador Dali, and experienced his receptivity and broad-mindedness first-hand. Her presence in Tampa at the venerable Michael Murphy Gallery the opening week of this exhibition will provide invaluable insights into the collaboration between her father and Dali, and works they produced together.
Salvador Dali: The Argillet Collection is a magnificent artwork collection, as well as a unique and immersive fine art experience, and Michael Murphy Gallery is honored to present a world-class museum-provenanced Exhibition. The gallery welcomes all: interior designers, art lovers, collectors of Salvador Dali’s works and our new & present valued patrons and guests: as all will have the opportunity to interact with the artwork, the rare Aubusson tapestries and the worldrenowned Dali etchings that are an unparalleled intimate connection to the artist himself. He’s Got Balls
Collector Makes History With Autographed Baseball Collection PHOTOS/MARCIA BIGGS
BY MARCIA BIGGS Dennis Schrader is full of stories. Funny stories. Remarkable stories. Stories that take you back to another day and time throughout the history of the American game of baseball. He’s full of trivia, like remembering which team won the world series in 1945 and how a deaf major league player led to the birth of baseball hand signals. He’s got nearly 5,000 tales to tell, each of them centered around a name scribbled on a baseball. Dennis Schrader, who lives in Tampa Bay, is the collector and owner of the world’s largest autographed baseball collection. The 74-yearold has been collecting autographed baseballs since he was a tyke. “It was 1956 and I was 9 years old,” he says. “I made 25 cents a day as a New York Yankees ball boy. They were doing spring training here at Al Lang Field. I was sitting on a bench and a ball rolled over, I picked it up and a man comes over and says ‘hey kid, you want me to sign that ball’ ... it was Mickey Mantle ...that’s how it started.” Schrader has spent decades scouring the internet, phoning prospective sellers, attending countless sports memorabilia

shows. Some of the names on the balls are faded and barely legible, others are clearly recognizable. Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe. Wait. Marilyn Monroe? Yep, they both autographed one baseball. It’s one of 4,999 autographed baseballs that make up the Schrader’s Little Cooperstown exhibit at the St. Petersburg Museum of History. Before it was installed at the museum in 2013, the now internationally recognized collection filled Schrader’s house where collector clubs, major athletes and team managers, public officials and sometimes celebrities would be invited to stop by for a gander. When the museum agreed to house the collection, he jumped at it (technically the exhibit is on loan, he adds). Now the world can visit his revered collection, something that makes Schrader happy. Schrader’s collection earned the Guinness Book of World Records title for the largest Collection of Autographed Baseballs in 2011, with 4,220. This year, he was inducted into the inaugural Hobby Hall of Fame by Sports Collectors Digest.
SPL PEOPLE
Visitors to the museum can’t miss Schrader’s Little Cooperstown, it’s in two large gallery rooms across from the ticket counter upon entering. Many of his autographed baseballs came from mailing people with a formal letter and kindly asking if they would autograph a baseball. If they agreed, he would send them a ball and self-addressed box to return it. “The letter would say I had this collection and I was trying to get in the Guinness Book of World Records and it would become part of a museum exhibit,” says Schrader. “I was not going to sell it on e-bay.” More often than not, they signed, sealed and delivered. Schrader designed the museum exhibit to take visitors on a trip through the history of baseball. Here you’ll find photos and artifacts of baseball legends like Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, “Shoeless” Joe Jackson and Joe DiMaggio, as well as displays on leagues such as the Women’s Professional Baseball League and the Negro Leagues. One wall is dedicated to more than 100 years of Tampa Bay’s own history as a spring training destination. Another shows baseball in relation to world events over the past century. But this rare collection displays more than baseball legends’ autographs, it also includes athletes like Mohammed Ali and Pete
Rose (his ball said he was sorry for betting), and political leaders such as Fidel Castro. (Trivia alert: Castro was offered a contract, including a $5,000 signing bonus, by the New York Giants in 1949. He turned down the offer and returned to Cuba where he went on to make history.) The collection includes Elvis and Priscilla (separate balls but next to one another), Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart (same ball), presidents Nixon, Ford, Carter and Obama. Some signatures are unfamiliar names, forever associated with world-changing events and disasters. Millvina Dean, last survivor of 1912’s Titanic sinking, signed a ball in 2008 and died in 2009. Rock stars and musical celebrities abound from Liza Minelli and Alice Cooper to the Rolling Stones. Yes, all four signatures. Not a baseball fan? It doesn’t matter. Dennis Schrader’s Little Cooperstown exhibit is almost as entertaining as the museum’s mummy and two-headed calf. Remodel for Family to Live, Work & Play PHOTOS FROM DAVID FISCHER
BY DAVID FISCHER Our clients wanted a new look and layout for their waterfront home in Shore Acres. This working couple with two children wanted a more livable home for their busy family with a coastal feel. They wanted to repurpose unused space for more pressing functional needs. The children’s playroom was no longer used as the children grew so the space was transformed into a large home office for the two working adults. The sunroom was transformed into a larger den for family time and an adjoining smaller den was transformed into a living area with a sliding door wall out to the waterfront patio. All of these new plans for the home needed to blend with the existing architecture and flow.

Grey tones were used throughout the home to pull together the open living space. The sunroom made way for a new family living space with shiplap accent walls and comfy oversized deep grey corduroy sofas. We chose a wood-look tile flooring in this room to withstand the wet feet coming from the nearby pool area. The room is accessorized with personal photos from the past and coastal treasures to complete the look. The hard surfaces are softened with a long grey shag rug and beautiful white drapes. We transformed a former living area into an adult extension of the nearby kitchen and new family room. This lounge area was made for conversation and entertaining, a place where the adults could relax and enjoy company while being close to the rest of the family. A rustic wine hutch, four soft comfortable arm chairs and a stylish round padded coffee table/ottoman furnish this room and make it perfect for time with friends. The new home office needed to be functional for two workfrom-home adults while leaving space for the children to watch TV and play video games. We designed dual built-in desks with lots of storage since the home lacked storage space. A patterned floorcloth was chosen to break up the hard tile expansive floor while remaining functional for the rolling office chairs. We chose a solid surface countertop to make for a seamless desk surface across both work spaces. David Fisher is owner and lead designer for ZaZoo’d in downtown St. Pete. Style, Function Merge in Trendy Home Offices PHOTOS/CLOSET FACTORY
BY MARCIA BIGGS If the dining room table currently doubles as your desk, creating a custom home office might be something to seriously consider. With so many people working from home now, the importance of creating a functional and aesthetically pleasing space to work requires careful consideration. If you are thinking of converting a bedroom or other space into a home office you are not alone. Design firms are reporting an avalanche of requests for home remodeling that does just that. From color palette to furnishing to lighting, this is your chance to craft a workspace that is unique to you and how you work. Eden Heftel, a senior designer with Closet Factory who works with homeowners across Tampa Bay, has seen a huge uptick in requests for home offices in the last 18 months. Everybody uses space differently, she says, so there really are no rules. Some people like to display things in built-in wall cabinets, others are very minimalist. Some need to double as a guest bedroom, others don’t. She offers these tips when considering a remodel to incorporate a work area:
White-on-white built-in shelving and storage are functional in a contemporary home office.
•First, think about how much equipment you have and what kind of desktop space you need. Do you need two monitors or just a laptop? Will you share the desk with another person? This will determine your desk size. “I highly suggest putting USB and other outlets right on top of your workstation,” she says. “You want convenient access to hook up right at your fingertips. I also like to install power strips at desktop level and lighting built in with dimmer switches.” •Consider what kind of space you need for filing cabinets, do you want them hidden behind doors or in cabinets and easily accessible.
A spare bedroom with daybed also serves as a home office.

•If you have cabinets above the desk, install strip lighting recessed in panels covered by a frosted panel. A dimmer switch allows you to control the amount
SPL HOMES of lighting you need. Strip lighting distributes light evenly, as opposed to cone lighting which is more of a spotlight. If the room offers a pleasant view, many homeowners prefer to create a workspace that takes advantage of it. This can be accomplished with a standalone desk or a peninsula desk that juts out from the wall, says Heftel. Trending now is home offices with Murphy beds, she says. Since many people convert bedrooms into offices, Murphy beds are in high demand to accommodate both working and overnight guests. Once the bed is folded up into its cabinet, its frees up space allowing the room to instantly become transformed into an office. How much you plan to spend on a home office is up to you, but most remodels can range from $5,000 to $15,000, reports Heftel. A single wall is transformed into office space with lots of overhead storage.
Style is the key element in this modern home office which highlights the owner’s arts and crafts collection.

Infuse Living Spaces with Healing Color
This duo-tone family room is painted with Bohemian Lace and bold Passionate Red, the 2021 Color of the Year by HGTV Home by SherwinWilliams. Accent chairs in navy blue complement the rich palette.
From experiences to surroundings, the past year has brought a renewed focus on feeding the soul. In an era of overstimulation and information overload, many are finding a new appreciation for living life minimally but with maximum experiences. That mentality is increasingly evident in all aspects of life, especially with home design and decor. After all, spending more time at home means more time to discover what truly evokes happiness. At the same time, as the focus on physical and mental wellness heightens, design experts see those trends reflected in a more considered approach to design inspired by color therapy, which makes it possible to create beautiful spaces filled with healing color.
50
Appliances In the past, appliances were meant to blend into the decor to be less obvious, albeit essential, elements of a kitchen. A more contemporary approach: vibrant appliances that get noticed. You can find major appliances in a wide range of colors, but if you’re not sure about going that big and bold, many smaller countertop appliances, such as stand mixers and toasters, come in a range of colorful options, too.
With an expertly coordinated color palette, like the Color Collections from HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams, colors work in perfect harmony in any combination. Thoughtful use of color is among the most effective design tools for reveal-worthy style in your home.
Architecture When contemplating where and how to apply color to a space, avoid boxing in your options. Think beyond traditional wall space when planning ways to change the color in a space; be thoughtful with color and highlight architectural details to elevate the interest and charm in your home. Take a 360-degree immersive color approach, painting the same shade from floor to ceiling and all around to create a mood-boosting lift to a room.
Cabinets Painted cabinets are on-trend, and if you’re bored with basic whites and grays, you’re not alone. Designers are going bold in the kitchen and using cabinetry as a showpiece. These color palettes create inspiring spaces that invite you to get busy baking or simply pull up a chair and linger over a cup of coffee.
To infuse more color and boldness into your space, consider a timeless and elegant shade of red, like HGTV Home by SherwinWilliams’ 2021 Color of the Year. This paint color, “Passionate Red,” is a deeply saturated hue that is daringly rich and invigorates the senses. This bold and empowering red is steeped in history, merging modern design with traditional charm.

SPL HOMES Furniture Whether you’re into project pieces you can transform into something new or simply shopping for furnishings that complement your space, be sure to consider how the furniture fits into the overall color scheme. Selecting furniture that fits with the design brings a more cohesive and stylized feel to the room. For example, a desk and bookshelves in pale natural hues can lend warmth to an office with walls painted a cool dynamic blue. If you’re concerned about how to bring a color palette together, consider using a collection that has been intentionally curated to mix and match shades for a perfect look no matter which hues you choose. You can easily achieve a new look with an option like the Delightfully Daring Color Collection from HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams. With earthy tones inspired by nature and a dose of vibrancy, the shades are simultaneously energizing and calming. The palette makes it easy to introduce statement colors in unexpected ways so you can feel confident in your selections. After a year of being homebound, Americans aren’t so much about style as they are about feeling comfortable in your own space. Function is as important as form, and colors that make you feel comfy. Here’s what consumers are looking for in 2021, according to Southern Living: 1. Creative solutions for dividing home space to allow for work and privacy. This can mean sliding barn doors, screens and reconfiguring furniture. 2. Neutral colors. According to Houzz, there is renewed interest in all shades of beige. Accent colors add pop. 3. Soft textures such as velvet or brushed corduroy to give you that cozy feel. 4. Shelves to show off your stuff in any room. 5. New program links non-profits with donors
The Community Foundation of Tampa Bay has launched a new tool to connect philanthropists with the unexpected and urgent needs of local nonprofits. Called the Critical Needs List, the program quickly mobilizes funding sources to help local nonprofits that are facing imminent threats to their ability to serve the Tampa Bay community. Nonprofits share sudden and urgent needs with the Community Foundation for posting on the Critical Needs List. The Community Foundation is defining ‘critical needs’ as unbudgeted, unforeseen, and time-sensitive needs that significantly interfere with the nonprofit’s ability to provide critical services or presents an imminent threat to the nonprofit’s continued operations. The Community Foundation posts the nonprofit’s request for urgent support on the Critical Needs List on its website: www. cftampabay.org/criticalneedslist/. Community philanthropists are able to view specific information regarding local nonprofits’ critical needs. The Community Foundation works to match philanthropists with the nonprofit’s funding request, and offers matching incentives when its fundholders contribute to a need on the list. “We provided more than $30 million in grants to nonprofits last year, but some requests can’t wait for a funding cycle,” said Marlene Spalten, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay. “We saw how the COVID-19 pandemic affected many local nonprofits, and it sparked the idea to create an avenue for nonprofits to receive urgent support.” Nonprofits are also encouraged to submit applications for the Community Foundation’s competitive grants cycle when it opens on October 13, 2021. It will award approximately $1 million in competitive grants to local nonprofits this year. CFTampaBay.org
Johns Hopkins Woman’s Journey is Back The annual health conference A Woman’s Journey presented by Johns Hopkins Medicine will be presented Saturday, November 13, in a two-hour virtual program. Designed to provide a better understanding of your health, the program features a keynote speaker and eight presentations. For six weeks following the program, registered participants will have exclusive access to watch all eight sessions “on demand.” Psychiatrist Karen Swartz opens the virtual conference with a keynote presentation on “Finding Resilience in the Shadow of Crisis.” The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the stress and anxiety that often accompany our lives. For many, the pandemic led to post-traumatic stress disorder. As some of us confront concerns about our
return to an office or school, mental health professionals predict a national mental health crisis. Swartz talks about resilience and how to better cope with anxiety and stress while emerging from the wrath of the pandemic. Additionally, the Woman’s Journey program presents Conversations That Matter, a live discussion webcast every second Tuesday of the month, covering different health topics affecting women. dine, beauty, shopping, arts, offices, apartment living, the list is limitless. You can work, live and play on Central Ave. What or who inspires you? My mother inspired me to be who I am today. She was a super hard-working woman, dedicated and sacrificed for those she loves. She inspired and helped me with my 1st business Thuy Café and that was how I started to exist and have the chance to live a life I never thought or dreamed I would.
How long have you lived in St. Pete and why do you love it? I have been in St. Pete 22 years. I love St. Pete because I get to live a big city lifestyle in a small town. The people here are friendly and the connections within our own community are very helpful. Living here has allowed me to achieve my American Dream.
What do you consider your greatest accomplishment as an entrepreneur? My greatest accomplishment is to be able to provide people with sustainable job opportunities. As long as we are all working together, we will benefit from each other. It also allows me the opportunity to give back to the community.
As an owner of multiple businesses in St. Pete, why do like the Central Avenue locations? I like Central Ave. because it is centrally located, it’s a 2 way street that you would not miss by driving by or walking. It also allows me to visit my businesses easily. Besides who wouldn’t love Central Ave., it presents its own pocket of the city, wine &
Do you plan to expand in this market with additional businesses? I always have something burning in me and I don’t think I will ever stop. However, I would like to be more conservative nowadays. I don’t want to rush into a new opportunity then lose my sight on the opportunities that I already have.

SPL FASHION
Fashion Revival
Fall fashion trends find new cruising speed this season After our lives were turned upside down, designers recalibrated giving fashion more meaning. They reacted with essence in new trends, responding to the unknown and unpredictable. My observation is clearly stating that the art of fashion refocused, gave more consideration to conscientious functionality. There are so many glorious new trends that I am incredibly thrilled about. Shiny fabrics. I’m a sucker for sparkly clothes, this may be one of my favorite Fall 2021 fashion trends. Sequins can spice up any outfit, and not only in summer, or as a winter classic. Fall means cozy, but who can say that a cozy sweater can’t have amazing sparkles? Shimmering “liquid metal” fabrics in two-piece outfits are must-haves this season. Worn together they are gloriously royal, surprise your friends and pair them with more casual but still luxurious loungewear to create a completely new and fantastic look. Hot colors of fuchsia, coral and yellow have a significant place as monochromatic pieces, unexpected accent decorations added to muted outfits, or as a statement accessory paired with printed attire. I never get tired of pretty and saturated colors, they are so uplifting — don’t you want to smile when you see them? Geometric patterns are huge this season. Oversized plaids and graphic prints are not only super stylish but flattering if you have some sins to hide. Tailored suits are one of my personal all-time favorites; you simply look smart in a suit. I used to live in them and never got tired of a greatly fitted paint suit. Finally, we can welcome their strong comeback and we can even belt them.
SPL FASHION Matching sets are sneaking their way into the fashion world, first as pajama styles, then in luxurious loungewear, now all tricks are allowed. Try sophisticated creams and beiges head to toe, shiny plaids or bold florals on the top and bottom at the same time. Leather everything, and I mean everything! Your LBD can be all leather (faux if you prefer), your pants and tops, or just parts of them, look super “rock star” if the material is leather. Black. Should I say that black is the new black? We can never have enough LBDs in our closets, and this fall offers styles like never before, adorned with cut-outs, cold shoulders, bare midriffs once again serving us as a staple of societal modifications. All black outfits are anything but basic, there is nothing slicker.
Puffy accessories are everywhere. Not just your familiar Chanel clutch, but all styles of handbags in inflated designs are popular. The same goes for puffy sandals with or without stitching. Belts, yes, belts are stronger and greater than previous seasons. Hold on to your Gucci buckle belt, and add several more, you will use them. It is not only a terrific addition to your statement pieces, but a well-chosen belt can change the entire look of your wardrobe. Fall fashion looks magnificent this season. I am excited, and I hope you are too, my friend. Megan Simons is owner of Pippa Pelure, a fine fashion boutique in downtown St. Petersburg, FL. Contact her at pippapelure@ tampabay.rr.com.

Enchant Christmas Returns to Tropicana Field to Light Up the Holidays The holiday season will certainly look brighter than last year when the captivating holiday extravaganza Enchant Christmas returns to light up Tropicana Field from November 26- January 2. Last appearing in 2019 to often sold-out audiences, the dazzling family-friendly interactive display returns with a Mischievous Elf theme in which guests go on a quest though a Christmas light maze as they journey to save Christmas and find Santa’s missing gifts. The field of the Trop is transformed into a massive Christmas village, glittering in lights with trees towering to 80 feet high and larger-than-life ornaments. Live musical acts perform throughout the event, and a new Magical Night Sky projected on the dome ceiling recreates a North Pole night with thousands of animated synchronized lights. Fun includes an ice skating trail (skate rentals available), an artisan Christmas market and a visit with Santa himself. We recommend purchasing tickets early as St. Pete is the only Enchant venue in the Southeast, often selling out on weekends. Other locations are Dallas, Las Vegas, and Washington DC. Tickets prices and details had not been posted online at the time this publication went to print, but were expected to be available in September. In Sit, Stay, Heal, therapy dogs are brought into the museum garden for a power session of good vibes for visitors the fourth Thursday of every month. Frontline workers are invited to Sit, Stay, Heal free of charge, with work ID required and advance registration. Museums on Prescription is a partnership between local physicians and therapists and the MFA which allows health care providers to prescribe visits to the museum for patients they feel would benefit from an art viewing experience.
The Mood Tours, which also include SelfReflection, Grief & Resilience, Relationships, Empowerment and Joy & Celebration, are part of Picture of Health, a new multifaceted program fostering community wellness. This innovative approach to wellbeing is based on studies in recent years that have found a direct link between viewing art and positive health benefits, such as decreased cortisol levels, according to museum officials. Within each Mood Tour, visitors are encouraged to complete an art activity designed to allow deeper engagement with the art and their feelings. To design the tours, the MFA collaborated with two professionals in the arts in health field,

Exhibit by Dali Protégé Opens Dali protégé and St. Petersburg artist Louis Markoya presents a retrospective of his work exploring the technology of 3-dimensional illusion at the LeepaRattner Museum of Art on the Tarpon Springs campus of St. Petersburg College through February 6. Markoya’s art leverages optical technology and mathematical principles – with a nod to classicism – to create stunning works that have been described as “mindblowing.”
Markoya and Dali. The artist uses lenticulars “to accomplish what the Renaissance and Dali endeavored to do – achieve the illusion of great depth from a two-dimensional surface.” Lenticulars employ a technology in which lenticular lenses are used to produce printed images with an illusion of great depth in full color with no need for special glasses or viewing apparatus; some appear to be floating in space.
The exhibit is devoted to an evolution of fractal and lenticular technology of Markoya’s mentor Salvador Dali, with whom Markoya worked for six years. Dali leveraged the 3-D phenomena of holography and stereoscopy in the later years of his career, which along with mathematics greatly inspired Markoya.
Among other paintings in the exhibition will be the artist’s fluidly portrayed surreal portraits of Albert Einstein, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, fashion genius Alexander McQueen, and Salvador Dali, among others.

BY NITISH S. RELE There’s just no stopping Genesis. Ever since Hyundai launched the offshoot in 2015, enthusiastic reviews have followed. The G70, G80 and G90 sedans in the Genesis stable have been joined by the hot-selling luxury label’s first SUV, the GV80. It provides more proof that quality, styling, design, and ease of use have been trademarks of the Korean car builder’s upmarket offshoot from Day One. For our test drive, the all-wheel-drive GV80 was equipped with a beefy 3.5.-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine cranking out 375 horsepower @ 5800 rpm, and 391 pounds-feet of torque @ 5800 rpm. A seamless 8-speed automatic transmission offers Comfort, Eco, Sport and Custom Drive modes. Its electronically controlled multilink suspension handles the bumps and thumps of real-time roads with little sacrifice. The motor-driven power steering is perfectly weighted and provides ample feedback. Up front, the long hood of the handsome SUV meets all comers with a bold and mammoth crest grille topped by the winged emblem, and flanked by quad LED headlights. Write Field Program Aims to Inspire St. Pete Youth PHOTOS/CHRIS ZUPPA
The Write Field class of 2018/2019 at the Poynter Institute, St. Petersburg.
Neither of us work as locksmiths. Nor do we carry a ring full of keys like those custodians who could open every door at your old high school. Yet each time we meet with the students in the Poynter Institute’s Write Field program, we aim to help them unlock the power of writing. And when they write about their view of the world, it’s often a power to behold. For six years, Demorris Lee and I have served as co-leaders of the Write Field program. The writing intensive for middle school and high school boys gives them a chance to learn about different forms of writing, hear from an array of speakers and put the craft into practice. Poynter Institute is one of the nation’s foremost non-profit journalism training centers, and it’s located right here in St. Pete. Before the pandemic, we gathered once a month on a Saturday at Poynter, providing 30 to 35 students breakfast and lunch, a stipend and a chance to connect with each other. The Tampa Bay Rays, City of St. Petersburg, Wells Fargo Bank, Suncoast Credit Union and Sacino’s Formalwear are among the sponsors.

Demorris, a Pinellas County Schools communications coordinator and former journalist, and I have received as much as we’ve given. The Write Field allows us to open the door to these young minds, and what we’ve found has seldom disappointed. While they engage in writing speeches, sports stories, historical accounts, fictional pieces and poetry, it’s often the self-reflective essays that leave us in awe. It’s an emotional time for students in our community, and the essays reflect the challenges: bullying, suicidal thoughts, peer pressure, poverty, mental health and the aged-old search for purpose. Through it all, we’re confident of the connections we’ve made. Signs of success come in smiles that beam through the video conferencing, questions that reflect wisdom beyond their years and written pieces that reveal ambitious dreams. Zoom has allowed us to broaden the pool of dynamic speakers, including comic book inker and writer Jimmy Palmiotti, Pulitzer Prize winner Wesley Lowery and St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman. The Rays also annually provide a player to address the kids. Seminole High alumnus Brett Phillips delivered inspiring remarks last December. We’ve also gained strength from the commitment the students have maintained through the pandemic, now joining us virtually and relying on PDQ gift cards as incentives. For our year-end
SPL LIVING event in June, we asked all the students to gather one more time but a few had already embarked on summer plans. Still, one Write Fielder who was on vacation in New Mexico at the time of the event didn’t allow the twohour time difference to keep him from joining us virtually and reading his work to more than 70 attendees on the Zoom call. Another student joined us virtually from his Catholic church and read his piece to the group just 30 minutes before his confirmation ceremony. Both commitments reflect the pride the students have in their work, and the pride of seeing it published. Demorris and I have referred to ourselves as co-leaders of the Write Field program for six years. However, an equally apt title would be “Keepers of the Flame.” It’s a flame that Karen Brown Dunlap first ignited in 2010 when she served as president of the Poynter Institute. In the wake of a series of tragedies in South St. Petersburg, Karen sought to create a beacon for middle school and high school boys to help guide them to brighter futures.
With the Rays signing on as one of the inaugural founders, Poynter launched the Write Field program with the craft of writing lighting a path for these eager minds. Kenny Irby and Roy Peter Clark kindled the flame in the early years, inspiring the students to take pen to paper and chronicle the world they live in, the world they long for and life beyond their environment. Today, Demorris and I proudly carry on the work these pioneers launched. We want to blaze new trails, enlighten more minds and see more young men embrace the power of writing. We want to celebrate and salute Karen, Kenny and Roy for their initial efforts. Most importantly, we want to continue to unlock the power of writing in a generation that has endured uncommon challenges but continues to persevere. Ernest Hooper is the vice president of communications for the United Way Suncoast, and a former Tampa Bay Times columnist. Essay Excerpts “When it seems like the sky is falling, the people under it will begin to fall as well. Not only is this evident with the virus that has been brought to life, I see it with my own eyes every day. I see the three stages: hysteria, defiance, selfishness. … The people who were cheated out of their necessities believe that nothing can be worse than their new reality, so they ignore the rules and regulations that protect the ones that hurt them. And now the final crack in the sky forms and splits it in two. The sky has no support, it has nothing to hold it up. The sky falls, but it makes no difference. The people have already created their own doomsday.”
“I spend a lot of time looking inward and trying to determine who I am. Every teenager does that. And when I choose to examine how others see me, sometimes I focus on the haters who try to pull me down through bullying and insults. But there are people who love me, people who want nothing more than to see me succeed. Ever since I moved from New York to Florida, life has grown more difficult for me. But I heard one of the Write Field co-leaders say that you can’t let your environment define who you are or who you will be. He’s certain I can rise from these challenges to be a better person, a great student. I’m not so sure.”
— Damien Mesen
