CHAPTER 9 2

COMMODORE’S LOG

H

ello and welcome to the dog days of summer! The time of year when the rest of the country starts digging out the fall sweaters, while we break out the new bathing suits we’ve been saving for when the solar radiation is somewhat less than nuclear. While on the subject of bathing suits, congrats to all those who managed to attend the Pass-a-Grille Club’s Grand Opening Pool Party. What a BLAST! I have not seen so many people having fun since the last Commodore’s Ball. We had an amazing steel drum musician playing the most tasteful Island music, food, and enough drinks to satisfy even the most thirsty. That place has been jamming ever since. The weather is better than ever for a cruise and a swim so come on down! As we round the corner of our fiscal year, we have the Annual Meeting and the Board of Directors Election coming up, just a scant few days from now on October 8th. Please refer to Page 4 in this issue for information on our fine candidates. With the new fiscal year upon us, we have a modest two and a half percent increase over last year’s dues, which is right in line with inflation and actually less than the increase in costs we have experienced. We can thank our General Manager, Marc Reydams, for keeping a watchful eye out for ways to avoid unnecessary expenses without diminishing the amenities the Club continues to offer and improve upon. Thanks, Marc. This year, the Annual Blessing of the Fleet and Jazz Brunch will be on November 3rd, instead of the morning after the Commodore’s Ball, in recognition of the maxim that it’s a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning. A week later will be the 18th Annual Vintage Motor Classic on Sunday, November 10th. Bring your family and friends to this sure-fire nifty event. The Commodore’s Ball follows on November 16th, and we end the month with Thanksgiving served at the downtown & Pass-a-Grille clubhouses on November 28th. Don’t forget to order your turkey dinner to pick up and bring home if you’re entertaining and don’t feel like cooking.

And speaking of the Commodore’s Ball, I must say the recent Past Commodores have taken the Club members to all my favorite getaway spots with the soiree’s they have thrown. Consequently, it appeared that the best course of action was to transform this year’s bash into a metaphysical journey to a sort of “State of Mind”, in actuality if not reality, metaphysically speaking. I am therefore pleased to announce the theme for this year will be “You Can Leave Your Hat On – the Commodore’s Mad Hatter’s Ball.” Having fun will be mandatory; and yes, there will be prizes for the most apropos, maddest, and over the top hats, so start making plans now. I learned some time ago the key to a good party is good people, good music, good drinks, and good food, and can promise you there will be all that and more as this will be one heck of a soiree! If you missed the Pass-a-Grille pool party, you won’t want to miss this. Be there... or be square. See you at the Club!

Jim Byrne, Commodore

SPYC KIDS! DRAWING CONTEST S May/June 2019

PYC children and grand-children of members were encouraged to participate in our first annual “SPYC Kids! Drawing Contest” by submitting their most creative and fun drawings representing “what they love the most about SPYC.” A total of six participants entered, at which a Facebook Contest was launched in the month of June. The top three drawings that collected the highest number of LIKES & Shares, from our Facebook Fans, were awarded with a keepsake trophy and a prize. The GRAND PRIZE “SPYC Pizza Pool Party” was awarded to Jack Toth, age 4, 2nd Place

T

he pool at the Pass-a-Grille Beach Club officially opened on Saturday, July 6th. We had a blowout of a party complete with colorful beach balls, free keepsakes, pizza, keg beer, specialty drinks, raffle prizes, and steel drum music. Over 180 members and their families attended the event and, at one point in the afternoon, the pool was so crowded you weren’t sure if there was any water in it! A big thank you to the SPYC Flag Officers – Commodore Byrne, Vice Commodore Blacker, Rear Commodore Mendelblatt, and Treasurer Waters – for their support of this project that has been months in the planning and execution stages.

awarded to Rosie Simpson, age 12, and 3rd Place to Finn Cox, age 10. Also participating were: Akseli Heikkinen, Kayla Layton & Christian Layton. Many thanks to everyone who voted on the official SPYC Facebook page for all of these very talented children!

And to Past Commodore Klingel a special note of thanks, as he spearheaded this project from the beginning until its completion and grand opening. If you weren’t there, you missed the famous “jump in the pool” by the flag officers – re-creating the same event done at the downtown pool in 1992. Another great reason to visit the Passa-Grille Beach Club on the water...come by car or boat and enjoy wonderful food, an outdoor deck, and NOW....our new pool!

uring the summer months, the Salty Sisters found a variety of things to do. Starting with the first of four Race Committee classes on June 6th, Jennifer Parramore and Gina Bowden-Pierce provided an overview of all aspects of a regatta and how the different roles work together. The jobs of Recorder, Scribes, and Flags were emphasized. On June 19th, Janet Walker and Co-Captain Kathy Ahern presented a class on the role of the Regatta Chair in organizing the operations of regattas and setting marks with a compass wheel. July 3rd, Selga Sakss and Jennifer Parramore discussed the Racing Rules of Sailing as they pertained to running a race. Jennifer conducted the last of the classes pertaining to protests and protest forms on July 31st.

in the relays were: Els Wiemken, Charl Hadfield, Beverly Smoak, Dee Gill, Carol Hansen, Jennifer Parramore, and Joan Stephenson. We had a “Paddle Board Play Date” the week before.

our LBC board has been hard at work planning program meetings for the 2019 – 2020 season. Debbie Heston, Program Chair, presented a wonderful line-up I believe you will find very appealing. Juanita Lolita, a nationwide stand-up comedian well-known for her ‘comedy without profanity,’ will keep us pleasantly entertained Monday, September 16th. With her stories about everyday life, she is something of an Erma Bombeck of our time. Juanita is a wife, mother and grandmother who is out to change the face of comedy and prove that clean can be hilarious! Plan to join us for this fun-filled presentation followed by lunch. Be there early – we start at 11:00 am at the SPYC PAG location. If you haven’t seen the pool yet you are in for a treat! ur monthly meetings are on the second Thursday and we shoot every Friday morning. Naturally at every meeting we decide where to shoot the next morning. For other Fridays we communicate through a group email. With only a few viable places to shoot, that decision does not take long. Sometimes weekend quail hunts or charity shoots get on the agenda. Once in a blue moon a guest speaker

agrees to speak to us. Our meetings sound boring and that would be fake news. Arguably the meetings are the highlight of the Wing Shooters month. They are entertaining, rowdy, low levels of decorum, and irreverent would be descriptive. We pride ourselves in having no rules and that is evident. As we’ve gotten to know each other we have found plenty of material to throw out on the table. No one is spared a bit of ridicule and no one gets offended. Any topic can spin out of control at any moment. As you can expect we have a great time and laugh a lot. However a disparaging comment about somebody’s gun, that would be over the line. We are definitely a refreshing odd duck in a politically correct world. If you choose to join us you’ll quickly realize shooting skills are not required, while a perfectly timed snappy retort frequently carries the day.

The SWA have been busy recently with lots of good fishing. Several of us were able to get out on Wayne’s World for one of three trips made targeting Red Snapper during the short season. PC Tom Wallace, and his son John, more than helped achieve our ARS limit early one day and then showed us some productive Yellowtail Snapper techniques. Another trip, we ran out 60 miles skirting storms, bagged the ARS limit and ran back to PAG in time for the pool’s grand opening. Saltwater Anglers meet at 6:00 pm on the second Wednesday evening of every month at the downtown Clubhouse.
