CHAPTER THREE COMMODORE’S LOG

Dear fellow members...

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL! We celebrated a Joyous Christmas and Hanukkah season with many Holiday parties in December, and it was nice to see activities back to normal. Special thanks go to two of our members, Pam Thomas and Deborah Hooper, as well as to Karma, Sami, Jesse, Garrett, Frank and Johnny on our staff, for their efforts in creating our wonderful Holiday decor this year, especially the nice photo spot in the lobby. We all miss the live trees from years past, but fire safety rules preclude doing so now.

We say goodbye to 2024 with mixed emotions. We should be mindful of the past challenges we faced and use that experience to build our future. Our new state-ofthe-art marina is open and looking great. The St. Petersburg Sailing Foundation, a tax-exempt organization, has been created as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Club. It can receive tax-deductible donations to support sailing, especially our junior sailors. It’s new Board of Directors will be making announcements and awarding grants and scholarships to support our young sailors in competitions in Florida, Nationally and even Internationally.

From January 10th - 12th our Club will proudly be hosting the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs. We are one of the original members of FCYC had have always been active in the Council. Our delegate is currently Chuck Goes and he selflessly attends meetings and brings back to our Executive Committee and Board of Directors information on activities of the Council, other clubs, and programs that benefit all. The details of the January meeting can be found by logging into your member portal at www.spyc.org and click on the FCYC blog in member Central. You might attend the dinner Saturday night for sharing camaraderie with fellow yachtsman.

"Coffee with the Commodore"

Tuesday, January 14th | 9:00 am | Regatta Room (reservations not required - please note, this date has been updated and will not be reflected in the hard copy version)

To further improve communication for those wishing to join the Club, I have created the “Ambassador Committee” to support our Membership Committee, by meeting and getting to know applicants to be presented to the Board before they are offered for election. The committee will also help welcome and orient new members once elected and introduce them to the many opportunities offered by the Club. I have appointed Chris Fraiser as chair, and he is well underway to improving our joining process and welcoming new members.

I’d like to give everyone a short update on our hurricane recovery efforts. Our downtown club house looks good with our new flooring in the front-of-the-house. The minor damage in the back-of-the-house from Helene has been repaired but still has the same challenges with outdated infrastructure that is being addressed in the Master Plan. The garage gates await electrical components that are back ordered. For Snell marina, contracts have just been approve by the Board to repair the electronics and the roof, making it fully operational. The Sailing Center roof was damaged by the storms and similarly, and the Board has approved a new roof. Pass-a-Grille has some good news in that a building permit should be issued soon (possibly by the time this log is published) and the last step before starting construction is the FEMA inspection. .

Finally, I want to thank all of you for supporting the Employee Holiday Fund. Our staff serves all of us with a smile and a commitment, always striving to create a quality member experience. And to continue improving the member experience, I continue to speak with members in small groups about issues facing our Club. I encourage you to approach me any time. And there is always the opportunity to come to Coffee with the Commodore, which I am finding is creating much more dialogue on the many issues within the Club. If you don’t speak up, we will never know how we can improve.

Cordially,

History of the FCYC

In August, 1960, the St. Petersburg Yacht Club invited representatives from the leading West Coast Yacht Clubs to a meeting to discuss forming a representative body to encourage the sport of yachting and general club activities, to promote safety a oat, to encourage reciprocity between quali ed yacht clubs, and to promote bene cial legislation.

We are pleased to announce the reopening of the new state of the art downtown marina. On December 1st over 150 members attended the ribbon cutting, blessing, toast, and a tour of the docks. Many vessels are making their way back to their leased slips as well as SPYC members cruising in to dock and dine or enjoy an overnight or two stay.

The marina is also all ready to welcome back the busy regatta season with many events planned. Remember to contact our Harbor Master or Dock Master to book a transient slip. Also look for signs being placed on the flex spaces which indicate if a slip is available for use.

The new floating dock marina contains 50 slips ranging in size from 25 to 83 feet in length and contains 620 feet of flexible space to accommodate transients and vessels arriving to dock and dine. This is 190 more feet of flex space than the prior marina. A new dedicated transformer with significantly increased electric supply has been installed. A ground fault monitoring system allows monitoring of vessels that may be causing electrical issues without interrupting power to other vessels.

The fuel dock is conveniently located at the northeast end of the long 475-foot east west dock which now includes a pump out station. Please note that the fuel system was damaged by the two recent hurricanes, new equipment is on order, and we hope to be serving fuel by February/March.

by Rear Commodore, Kevin Cross

The floating dock system is manufactured by one of the best manufacturers in the world, SF Marina, chosen by the Marina Redevelopment Oversight Committee who undertook an exhaustive search of many available systems. The Marina has already been successfully tested by three hurricanes this year.

As we know the project took longer than anticipated mainly caused by the time to obtain City and County building permits. Once the permits were approved in late December 2023 construction progress started in earnest and was completed within the 316-day construction period allowed in the construction contract.

The Dock Project Management Team was formed in December 2023 to oversee the physical construction phase. This small committee included our Rear Commodore, General Manager, Chief Financial Officer, Waterfront and Club Communication Director, and Facilities Manager. This team met every week with our General Contractor and Engineers to set priorities and strategies to complete the project as quickly and cost effectively as possible.

Please enjoy our new docks, we are lucky to have such an amazing facility managed by a team that makes our boating experience a safe and enjoyable one.

SPYC DOCKs - HAVE come a long way!

Sunday, January 1, 2025, we saw the christening of SPYC’ s brand new floating docks!

It’s been quite a process and test of patience, but well worth it. The docks have experienced many changes since their early beginnings back in 1916 when all that was there were a few meager slips.

The photo of the dapper skipper belies the fact that there wasn't much of a yacht line-up on the other side of that lovely gate... “All dressed up and no place to go.” comes to mind!

More about the docks and their development can be found in the pages of the Centennial book on-line.

1920-30s SPYC Docks - the other side of the gate. Not much there!

SPYC'S MAGICAL HISTORY

Take a trip through the pages of time...

2009 Spyc centennial book History

The 15th anniversary of the creation of the St Petersburg Yacht Club Centennial Book was celebrated in December by three of it ’s creators: P/C Bill Ballard, Barbara Watson and Gina Bowden-Pierce (right in photo).

As told by Barbara Watson. “At incoming commodore Bob Johnson's suggestion, work began in 2007 to come up with a fitting book about the SPYC for its centennial year - 2009. P/C Bill Ballard created the text. A Nautical Heritage 1909-1989 by Dick Funsch was an original source, plus Bill did a great deal of research. The late Tom Pierce was copy editor and flushed out all the errors and inconsistencies. Bill and Tommy had been Junior members of the club and between them had much history to draw on. Each of their fathers had been commodore.

Total access was given to the photo library at City Hall and at the then St Petersburg Times. Many photographs were scanned by club Historian Barbara Watson for use in the book and digital copies were given to the newspaper.

Gina Bowden-Pierce designed the book and did the final proofreading before it went to the printer.

The membership was encouraged to come up with memories or photos. History events led up to a book-signing party for members.

The History box that was sealed by Commodore Johnson at that year’s ball was to be opened 25 years later. It will be opened in 2034; just 10 years to go!

Copies were distributed to members of record in 2009, and to new members who joined after. The content is available on the club’s website. “

DECEMBER 2024

Employee of the Month

MARTIN

VARGAS

Jan. 29: Salty Sisters

This month, we’re thrilled to honor Martin Vargas , one of our exceptional Bar Backs, as December's Employee of the Month! While Martin continues to learn English, we wanted to honor his hard work and dedication by writing this article in Spanish so he could show his friends and family. Martin has been a vital part of the SPYC family for the last year, consistently showcasing his dedication, teamwork, and positive attitude. Outside of work you can usually find Martin watching his favorite football team, the Pumas of Mexico City or playing on the pitch. Another one of his hidden talents is playing the bass guitar and volunteering at his church.

Please join us in congratulating Martin Vargas on this welldeserved recognition! He embodies the spirit of SPYC, and we are so fortunate to have him as part of our team. Cheers to Martin!

¡Salud a Martín!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! It was a busy and festive Holiday Season for the Cruising Fleet, and we were all grateful to be back on the water again after a tough hurricane season. In November our fleet cruised to the Clearwater Harbor Marina. On Friday evening, Kelly Lee and Jay Rice graciously hosted the group for docktails and a potluck dinner on "Mac n’ Rice". The group then attended the O.A.R. concert at Baycare Sound, with fantastic seats all together in that beautiful venue. On Saturday, some cruisers took a dinghy ride over to the Clearwater Yacht Club for lunch, while others either dinghied or took Ubers to Dunedin for lunch and shopping. Dinner Saturday night was a delicious treat at Bon Appetit in Dunedin. Thanks to Sue Cooper, Al Torres, and Jennifer Kirk for planning a fantastic weekend!

The speaker for our November meeting was Tony Hooper, Vice Commander, United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, Division-7Tampa Bay. Tony gave an interesting and informative talk on Marine Navigation, with insights on various navigation and weather applications.

Day Trippers met for lunch at the Davis Island Yacht Club in November. The group enjoyed a delicious lunch with a beautiful view. Thanks to Sue Cooper for once again planning a great Dock n’ Dine day on the water.

The Fleet celebrated our busy 2024 cruising program with our Awards & Holiday Party on December 13th. Seven Cruisers were recognized for participating in four or more cruises, which was quite a feat in a year of multiple hurricanes and cancelled cruises. Eighteen teams were recognized for serving as Port Directors, and six cruisers were recognized for serving on the Fleet Committee. Special recognition went to Sue Cooper for leading the Day Trippers group, and to Camille Iurillo and Joe Petrella for the incredible video of their pups, Skipper & Rudder, touching noses with a very curious manatee on their swim platform in Marathon.

The Cruising Fleet was thrilled to be able to enjoy a long weekend on our new docks in December and participate once again in the Lighting of the Yachts. Watch for photos in the next Smooth Sailing!

UPCOMING Cruising Fleet Events:

Jan. 16-18 - Tampa Convention Center & Lightning Game Feb 28-Mar. 2 – Cruising Fleet Anchor out at Emerson Point

March 28-30 – Cruise-in Downtown Dock

March 29 - Vessel Safety Check

March 30 – Blessing of the Fleet

Here’s a look back at the highlights of the Wing Shooter’s Society activities in 2024. Excluded: the best jokes told at our monthly meetings.

· January: Twenty-two attended the shooting trip to OK Corral in Okeechobee FL. We also set a monthly meeting attendance record at 35.

February: Fifteen members participated in the quail hunting trip to Boggy Pond Plantation in Moultrie GA.

· March: Our teams took first and third place at the Gator Shoot. Les Bauer scored a perfect 50.

April: Doug Williamson was back from an extended trip to Cleveland and a lengthy recovery. His tale of a botched pacemaker placement, transforming him to a left-handed shooter, was the highlight.

· May: Our monthly meeting was graced with shots of Angels Envy Scotch, a post-mortem gift of Wing Shooter John Worlein

· June & July: The trip to the South Florida Gun Club, one of the premier shooting destinations in the US, which was rained out in June, was rescheduled and held in July.

· August & September: Half of us fly north for the summer. For the other half, the highlight is the cold beer in the bar after a sweaty shoot.

· October: We were blown away by our foul weather friends Helene and Milton.

· November: We took Third Place at the G-Man Shoot. Our wild game dinner was postponed since our intended host’s home was wrecked by Helene and Milton.

· December: We held our Annual Holiday Dinner with our spouses to relive an event filled year. Our opening jokes were appropriate to the occasion, and we remembered our departed Wing Shooters.

Those wishing to join the Wing Shooters Society are encouraged to contact Frank Robinson at fhr506@gmail.com

Greetings Woman's Club members! The WC Board joins me in wishing you a Happy New Year and good fortune for a prosperous 2025. You are in for a great year of wonderful programs and happenings. Please join me in welcoming the Ladies Beach Club to our downtown family as we share with them our wonderful facility while the Beach Club is being restored to its glorious self. LBC members are welcome to join our meetings for the cost of food until you are able to return to your home club. As with our members, just sign up on the club calendar online.

Our upcoming January 9th program is one not to be missed! We are welcoming two fantastic speakers, Michelle Passoff & Joel Woodlief. Michelle Passoff, author of " Lighten Up! Free yourself from Clutter" will give useful tips and tricks to clean up your digital footprint and clear your life of clutter. And once you have cleared the clutter and can organize your thoughts, Joel Woodlief of LifeBook Memoirs will tell us how to capture our own Life stories and create a priceless family legacy. Start off your year getting a "clean slate". This is not a meeting you'll want to miss. Sign up today!! Social & Refreshments ~ 5:00 pm and Presentation ~ 5:30 pm.

Finally, thanks to all of our members who attended our Ho-Ho-Hoedown Country Christmas . And especially to all WC members who helped make this year's Christmas Boutique such a success by working and giving of your time to benefit the SPYC Junior Sailing program.

We have an experienced, passionate group of riders that have traveled far and wide on motorcycles together. The Riders Club welcomes you to join us. Weather permitting, we usually gather on Thursday or Friday mornings for a ride. The rides are very scenic and always involve a lunch somewhere unique and delicious.

To join our group and to keep updated with our events, please contact James Irwin at: JamesIrwin1231@gmail.com

Just like in the movies (Space Balls, Gravity, Starship Troopers, etc.) escape pods allow the hero to be saved. The RV can be an escape pod for those fleeing storms and can be a refuge for those affected by the storm surge. Ours proved to be that as we stayed in it after our house got flooded by Helene. So besides being a great way to see the country, it can be your second home on wheels when needed.

We are doing a caravan with some of our members from January 23rd - 29th. We will be visiting several RV parks. The first is Grand Oaks near The Villages. This is a beautiful equestrian center. Then we will be at Coastline RV Park near Eastpoint, FL close to St. George Island, and then on to Crystal River area at the Sweet Citrus Acres RV Park . Please feel free to join up with us for any or all of the trip. If you need more information please contact Rick & Sarah Moseley at: RVlandcruisers@icloud.com

One of the big events for RVers is the “RV Super Show” at the Florida State Fairgrounds being held January 15th - 19th. It is the biggest RV event in Florida and we think it is better than the one in Hersey, PA. Every type of RV and everything related to RVing is on display and for sale there. Every major manufacturer will be displaying all the newest models. Join us in January for a meeting about electric bikes that are increasing popular with RVers. Our next meeting will be 5:30 pm on Tuesday, January 14th at the downtown clubhouse. Please sign up at www.spyc.org at the online calendar. We welcome guests.

This year's SPYC Christmas Boutique, organized by Salty Sisters with the Woman’s Club at SPYC, returned for our 24th year with a packed clubhouse of 49 vendors. All proceeds from the sponsorships, raffle tickets, 50/50 sales and booth rentals will provide scholarships for children, that are beginner or intermediate sailors, who participate in the YMCA Summer Junior Sailing Program at SPSC. We want to thank our many sponsors for their contributions this year, making it the best year yet!! The Ballroom, Waterfront, and Harborview rooms were packed with a large variety of vendors selling items from jerky, baked goods, candy to jewelry, clothing and lots of wonderful gift items. Thanks again to all the volunteers who helped make this year a success.

Despite the obstacles of our two hurricanes, the Salty Sisters have prevailed! For the mornings that we have been able to sail, we have had outstanding wind along with the beautiful Sunshine. This sailing season, we have had the opportunity to sail in Sonars, Ideal 18s and the Prams. Originally, the Salty Sisters were to host the Crewed Regatta in early November but needed to postpone it until December 11th and 12th because of the damage from the storms. The Sailing Center has done a wonderful job fixing the docks and preparing the boats for the upcoming Regatta. We are really looking forward to it as it will be the first FWSA Regatta since the two hurricanes. We are also looking forward to a packed sailing schedule in January and February. We have planned our traditional SS Maggy Mug Crewed Regatta and, if all goes well, a Skippers Hat Challenge in March.

December 3rd was the 24th Annual SPYC Christmas Boutique and PC Carol Hansen reported that it was quite a success. Carol thanked the volunteers that made the “team” including Joy Rudnicki and Els Wiemken for handling the beautiful display of raffle items; Angela Treinen, our volunteer coordinator; Lindsay Carter for searching for and increasing our vendor participation; Beverly Smoak for handling the raffle tickets and money; KT Trudeau and Heather Lalanne for their help with the vendors and many other tasks needed. ALL the volunteers made the event a total success.

The Broad Reachers had a wonderful first sail of the season earlier in November. With Gloria Davis as PRO and Race Committee (all-in-one), we sailed three races in perfect conditions…..for Pass-a-Grille. Sailing that day were Mik Severini, Katie Rodges, Dana Kollman, Carol Hansen, and Anne O’Dell. We later walked down to The Wharf and enjoyed lunch.

On October 1st, several Broad Reachers attended the FWSA General Meeting hosted by the Salty Sisters. We enjoyed listening to guest speaker Terry Fortner, who was inspired by family ties to Florida, especially Caladesi Island in Pinellas County, including our waterways. She presented a wonderful history of Caladesi and how the island was originally settled by her great-grandfather.

Upcoming Events: We look forward to our Annual Christmas Party and Gift Exchange. Since the clubhouse is still under construction, Mik Severini has graciously offered to host the party at her home this year.

Hope is on the horizon! The Pass-a-Grille Club opened for pool service from Saturday through Monday with a limited menu and full bar! Soon the Ladies Beach Club may be back at home. In the meantime, the Downtown Club is being so gracious to us beach girl refugees. The November fashion show was amazing, and our very own models strutted their stuff on the runway! Thank you to Patchington for such a great shopping experience. The Christmas program was a blast! We learned to tie Christmas bows, fold napkins and were honored to have the NautiCats sing songs of the seasons for us.

Join us on January 14th for a history of St. Petersburg with author Monica Kile. She has been leading historic tours in St. Petersburg and across the state for twenty years. In February we will meet in the ballroom for a history lesson and demonstration of Flamenco dancing. Bring your dancing shoes and passion for an unforgettable program!

The LBC is excited about our annual Mah Jongg Tournament on Tuesday, February 4th at the Downtown Club. Current and former SPYC members are invited to join us for a lunch and a very competitive game!

Not part of the Ladies Beach Club at Pass-a-Grille yet?

Not a problem! Contact Helle Getz, Membership Chair at (630) 564-9095 or email sailtym@yahoo.com and join today. "Life is BETTER at the Beach Club with girlfriends!"

Come join us on Saturday mornings for some fun sailing and racing. You can participate as a sailor, race committee, or safety ashore. For more information about becoming a Broad Reacher, contact Carol Hansen at: Carol@dband1.com
