COMMODORE’S LOG CHAPTER TWO

Dear fellow members...

Seasons Greetings to all! Did I really just say that? Where did this year go? I hope all had a Blessed Thanksgiving. Yes, we endured two major hurricanes, and many are still coping with hardship. But we still have much to be thankful for in our lives, our Club, and our community. Working together, we will become stronger than ever.

We hosted a whirlwind weekend on Friday, Oct 25th, with our annual election, followed on Saturday by our annual meeting, and then Sunday with parties, first our Platinum and Gold members followed by our annual Member Appreciation. It was wonderful to see everyone having a good time. I felt an atmosphere where all the woes of Helene and Milton were forgotten for an afternoon, and we just enjoyed each being with each other.

You heard me announce that to help our staff, we hosted a “floor” signing event, where 100% of the proceeds went to a fund to help support them from their loss during the storms. I want to thank all of you for supporting this event.

It sure seemed that many of you enjoyed the ThunderBall hosted by PC Scott Boyle and his lovely wife, Terri. It was indeed a terrific night. I again thank again our staff for all that they did in making sure we all enjoyed a real celebration. I humbly accepted the change of watch to serve as your new Commodore, along with Christian Bergstrom as our Vice Commodore, Kevin Cross as our Rear Commodore and Mary Hacker as our new Treasurer, who is only the second woman to hold that position. All of us and the Board of Directors have pledged to serve all of you as we continue our heritage of yachting at this great Club and work toward our future Master Plan.

By now I hope you are following the progress of our restoring our Pass-a-Grille Club. Bruce Furman will be posting regular video updates showing all of you the progress. We are continuing to work on restoring Snell Marina, but shortages of electrical equipment may take us longer to be back in full operation. The big news is our new docks have passed final inspection and we are preparing to welcome back our slip holders in December and be in full operation by January 1st. Having our new state of the art marina will allow ample flex space for all members to enjoy and more importantly, our upcoming regattas.

Regatta Season is upon us, and we have already hosted the college and high school sailors for the Singlehanded Nationals. Congratulations to our winners on their impressive performances. Our Race Committee continues to amaze me, and I know they will be ready for the many regattas we will host in the coming months.

I began this note with Season’s Greetings and it’s never too early to begin shopping, so check out the 24th Annual Christmas Boutique on December 3rd. Then on December 12th come down to the Club for our Country Christmas Ho-Ho-Hoedown, and plan to ring in the New Year at our NYE 2025 CASINO PARTY on December 31st.

And in the spirit of the Holidays our Club will once again sponsor the annual Staff Holiday Fund. I ask you to please be as generous as you can for those that constantly go out of their way to serve us.

Cordially,

Commodore

The Adult awards ceremony was (finally) held and in a new venue for this event –the Heritage Lounge. Forty -seven adults & collegiate members of our Club were recognized for their accomplishments and performance for 2023. This comes after 3 postponements –2 because of hurricanes Helene & Milton!

In addition to the traditional certificate recognitions, eight newly created keeper trophy awards were presented to select individuals based on special merit. This segment of the 2023 Yachting Recognition program restructure was a huge success with well over 120 people in attendance – including all Flag Officers and new General Manager Doug Furman.

[Listed here are just few highlights. Please check the SPYC website for more photos and be sure to look for the souvenir pamphlets from this event.]

Greetings Members, as a matter of introduction, I’m Andrew C. Tsunis your new Chair for the SPYC Entertainment Committee. I’d like to start off by saying I hope that you and your families are safe after our recent hurricanes.

I have been a member of this amazing Club for three years and am originally from New York City. From my active memberships, in a number of clubs there, I hope to bring some interesting insights for future events at SPYC for our membership to enjoy. Our Committee is currently busy working to bring you another year of fun and excitement. I encourage you to check your monthly Smooth Sailing newsletter and weekly eblasts for upcoming event listings; including some of our past favorites, like the Annual Ugly Sweater Party & White Elephant Gift Exchange taking place on December 6th in our newly renovated Commodore's Lounge. It will be an after dinner party with drink specials and good music.

A sold out night of, "Scotches Around the World & Cigars", which the Committee hosted back on October 4th was a truly spectacular event! The evening featured amazing food from Chef Christian, a Scotch representative explaining the five tastings we had, and an amazing cigar for desert sponsored by King Corona Cigars of Ybor City . We also had give-a-ways where two lucky members walked away with a cigar carrying pouch and rare cigars. Last month on Saturday, November 23rd we hosted an FSU UF Watch Party . While there was no championship on the line, we thoroughly enjoyed watching the Gators take on the Seminoles.

The Committee looks forward to seeing you all at one of our events real soon! Have an idea for a fun event? Please feel free to email me directly with ideas/feedback at: tsunis@mac.com

Employee

of the Month

KYLE RUNNFELDT

A HUGE congratulations to Kyle Runnfeldt , our Employee of the Month for October 2024! Kyle has been an invaluable part of our Waterfront team for years, leading the charge in maintaining the Sailing Center’s fleets as boat usage continues to grow. His attention to detail, dedication, and incredible work ethic make him an irreplaceable asset to the SPYC team.

Beyond his role at the Sailing Center, Kyle often goes above and beyond by assisting other departments, including the marinas and maintenance teams. He was pivotal during hurricane preparations and instrumental in post-hurricane recovery, ensuring everything was back in working order. Please join us in celebrating Kyle’s hard work and accomplishments—stop by the Sailing Center and congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition!

NOVEMBER 2024

It is with great pleasure we recognize Shaina Kelley as November’s Employee of the Month. Shaina has been with the Yacht Club since 2021 and has become a standout server in the Heritage Lounge. Most people would not know this, but Shaina is both a certified scuba diver and dive instructor. In her spare time, you will find her routing on her alma-mater FSU or in the water somewhere around the world. Our Woman's Club kicked off the new program year in September with an informative evening with our guest speaker, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtier i. He arrived early enough to allow folks to welcome him to our Club and thank him for his 12 years of service. He provided information on immigration statistics here in our county, jail data, services his offices provides and some bits of humor. We had a big turnout, which showed our SPYC support for dedicated law enforcement in Pinellas County. We thanked him and presented a check for $250 for the Explorers Club in our county schools. This program is for youth who are exploring the field of law enforcement. Thank you to all our fellow Woman’s Club Board Members for helping with the event, please enjoy these photos!

The Cruising Fleet has certainly felt the effects of hurricane season this year. Our August cruise to the Tampa Yacht & Country Club was cancelled due to damage from Hurricane Debby. Our September 26th Day Trippers outing to Davis Island Yacht Club - cancelled due to Hurricane Helene damage. And our October cruise to Anna Maria/Galati - cancelled due to extensive damage from Milton. It’s been a devastating couple of months for our community, and our thoughts remain with all those affected by the storms and facing a long road to recovery.

For the October Cruising Fleet dinner our speaker was John Sinnott MD, SPYC member and previous Chair of the USF Department of Internal Medicine, speaking on “Medical Emergency Preparation and Procedures on the Seas”. With him was Dr. Kaley Tash, Chief of Medicine at Bay Pines VA. She is an Associate Professor at USF, and her grandfather is a former Commodore at SPYC. At the meeting, Fleet Captain Debbie Storey thanked the Cruising Fleet Committee for their great work during the 2023-2024 cruising year and announced that Garry Haas will be rolling off the committee and Paul & Julie Murray will be joining the committee for 2024-2025.

On October 31st, our Day Trippers were excited to meet for lunch at Parkshore Grill, dressed all-out in some incredibly creative costumes. The group enjoyed a festive gathering and a delicious prix fixe lunch on a (finally) perfect fall-like day.

Our November cruise to the Clearwater Harbor Marina was initially cancelled due to damage from Milton, but we were thrilled to learn that the marina was able to get repairs completed quickly so our cruise is on! Thirty Cruising Fleet members have tickets to the O.A.R concert at Baycare Sound, which is next to the marina. We are planning docktails and hors d’oeuvres dockside before the concert, and a group outing for dinner in Clearwater on Saturday night. Stay tuned for photos in next month’s issue of Smooth Sailing!

Seven Wing Shooter’s participated in the 5th Annual G Man Shootout sponsored by the FBI Tampa Citizens Academy Alumni Association on November 2nd. The Wing Shooter’s team of Gene Collins, Frank Robinson, Breck Amick and guest star shooter Terry Amick took third place. Every year the Wing Shooters participate in sporting clays charity events that support worthy causes. The Broad Reachers had a quiet summer, but the boats were very active with the summer Junior Sailing Program held downtown at the Sailing Center. Thanks to the Sailing Center staff for returning the equipment at the beginning of September so we can prepare for the upcoming sailing season.

Race Captain Juliette Clarke planned a couple of workdays early September, but due to weather and schedule delays we finally had one successful Saturday. Juliette Clarke, Dana Kollman, Katie Rodgers, Mik Severini, Barbara Watson, and Carol Hansen spent the morning checking all fourteen sails and boats preparing for the Annual Commodore Lucas Cup to be held on October 11th. Unfortunately, due to Hurricane Helene, the race had to be canceled. We’re hoping to find a date in the future to hold this popular FWSA event.

As everyone knows, Hurricane Helene dumped a lot of water on everyone. The Pram trailer was no exception. The first weekend in November Barbara Watson, Dana Kollman, Mik Severini, and Carol Hansen spent several hours cleaning out the trailer. Unfortunately, we had to toss a lot of things, old photos, race archives, and RC equipment. We washed and bleached as much as we could. After all that work, THE BROAD REACHERS ARE READY TO SAIL AGAIN!!!

Come join us for Saturday morning for some fun sailing and racing. You can participate as a sailor, race committee, or safety ashore. For more information about becoming a Broad Reacher, contact Carol Hansen at: Carol@dband1.com
