COMMODORE’S LOG CHAPTER NINE
Hello fellow members...
September is brimming with opportunities to visit the Club and immerse yourself in the fantastic events we have lined up. To kick things off, don’t miss our Mixology and Trivia Night on the 4th—a perfect blend of fun and friendly competition. Then, on the 6th, we have the much-anticipated Taylor Swift Night. Is she already back from Europe? Either way, it's going to be a night to remember!
One of our most cherished events, the Annual Buoy Ball, will take place on September 14th. Mark your calendars and get ready to dance the night away. And speaking of perfect pairings, be sure to join us at Pass-a-Grille on the 26th for an evening of Perfect Pairings of wine and food—a culinary experience you won’t want to miss.
For those looking to sharpen their dance skills ahead of the Commodore’s Ball, our Dance Lesson series is happening all month long. This is your chance to brush up on your moves before the big night. Speaking of which, reservations for the 2024 “Thunderball” Commodore’s Ball opens on September 9th. The event itself will be held on November 9th, and it's sure to be an unforgettable evening.
In preparation for our upcoming leadership transitions, I encourage everyone to attend one of the “Meet the Candidates” nights on September 24th or October 1st. This is a great opportunity to engage with those who are poised to lead our Club into the future. Additionally, don't forget about our Annual Meeting and Board of Directors Election on October 8th, which will be preceded by the Adult Yachting Recognition Awards Ceremony.
Now, on to some important updates regarding our Club's management. My hope is that by the time you read this, we have successfully engaged a new General Manager. The GM Search Committee has been working diligently, and we currently have two final candidates undergoing the vetting process. I extend my heartfelt thanks to our Controller, Colleen Finney, who has done an exceptional job guiding the Club as interim General Manager during this transition period.
Lastly, I’m thrilled to share an update on the facility upgrades that have taken place during the annual shutdown period of our downtown Clubhouse. The improvements we've made are extensive and were driven by our commitment to enhancing your experience at the Club. From revamping the Commodore and Parkview Rooms to deep cleaning the Lounge and 1909 Bar. We've also upgraded our exterior and common areas, including pressure washing, painting, and installing additional security cameras. These upgrades are a testament to our dedication to maintaining the highest standards for our facilities, and I can't wait for you all to enjoy the enhanced spaces. Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm. Here’s to a September full of memorable moments and continued camaraderie!
Fair winds and following seas,

JAMES DEININGER Active Boat Member Since 2009
Thank you for considering me to be your representative for SPYC’s Board of Directors. I have been fortunate to be a part of the SPYC family for my entire life and joined with my own membership in 2009. I was elected to the Club’s Board of Directors in 2013, proudly serving for 9 years. My involvement with our Long-Range Planning Committee helped to ensure a successful future for the Club. Throughout the years, I have volunteered and participated in a myriad of our Club’s interest groups and special events, including the Regata del Sol al Sol race to Mexico, NOODs, Vintage Motor Classic Car Show, Golf Group, Wine Society, and a wide variety of Intermediate activities. I have helped organize many successful Entertainment Committee and Powerboat Competition events. If re-elected, I will continue serving the best interests of our Membership as your representative on the Board of Directors.
I grew up in New England, moving to Florida in 2007 for work, and joined St. Petersburg Yacht Club in 2011. I wanted to find an outlet to reconnect to sailing and found that here, but more than that, I found a welcoming group of people. I am an active sailor and racer, flying the SPYC burgee on races from the Great Lakes to the Caribbean.
The culture and history of SPYC is unmatched and needs to be protected through the massive growth this area is experiencing. As an active member, racer/sailor and with my professional background in finance, focusing primarily on capital planning/ project finance, I believe I can add significant value to the club. The importance of involvement has been instilled in me from a young age. To that end, I’ve served on a variety of committees, including Membership, Finance, Offshore Racing, Sailing Center, Long-Range Planning, and Executive.
I grew up on Lake Erie and enjoyed sailing both in one-design and PERF racing fleets. I moved to Florida 15 years ago where I met my wife. With our love of the water, we decided to join the club for the Junior Sailing Program where my step-children were both participants in summer camp and later team racing. I have enjoyed the camaraderie with the many friends that we have made at the club.
I have served on the Long-Range Planning Committee along with volunteering at multiple sailing events. In addition to volunteering at the club, I am also a member of other not-for-profit boards in St. Petersburg to help make a difference in our community.
I developed my love of boating on Lake Lanier 45 years ago when I learned to captain my father’s boat and I’ve had a lifelong love of boating since then. My husband and I moved to St Pete in 2016 from Dallas TX,. I’m very active in the club. I’m Captain of the SPYC Cruising Fleet and have enjoyed serving on several committees for the club. I honed my leadership skills and operational expertise during my 33 years leading large operations for AT&T, retiring as an Officer and EVP in 2016.
In 2017 I became President & CEO of the Dallas Center for Performing Arts, executing a financial turnaround, including a redesign of the restaurant and food services, and successfully leading the organization through COVID. Now fully retired, I’m passionate about helping to preserve the history of the club and position it for success for generations to come.

As an Atlanta native, I discovered St. Petersburg through a bareboat sailing program offered by Offshore Sailing School. During that visit, I reconnected with a college friend who is now my wife, Courtney. We moved to Madeira Beach after thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail for our honeymoon in 2010. In 2012 we started our marine contracting and diving business, Gulf & Bay Marine.
We became SPYC members in 2015. It’s a place where we celebrate successful regattas and grab a pint to mourn race losses. The club’s name brings respect when we visit other clubs near and far, and we find instant camaraderie after Gulf races to Pensacola, Isla Mujeres, and Havana. The Club and those we know through it will be the center of lifelong memories, especially with our 1-year-old daughter, Maisie. I am honored to give back to a club that means so much to my family.
JILL WILKINSON Active Member Since 2010
I am a lifetime resident of St. Petersburg and became an individual member of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club in 2010; after being familiar with and utilizing SPYC for over 10 years because of my former husband’s membership. I was SPYC’s Truist/SunTrust banker prior to retirement in December 2022, specializing in Non-Profit clients including private clubs. As a result of my years as a member and SPYC’s banker, I feel I can represent our members and make meaningful contributions to the Board, especially in respect to finance and capital projects. I served on the Finance Committee in 2012-2013 and again in 2023-2024, and have applied to continue to serve on Finance. Non-profit, civic and community boards I have served: Suncoasters as President, St. Petersburg Economic Development Corporation as Chair, St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership as Treasurer, and St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce.
INTERMEDIATE ~ VOTE FOR 1
Growing up I spent my weekends on a lake outside of Nashville where I developed a love of the water. I moved to the area 2 years ago and immediately joined the club to find a sense of community in my new home. Since moving here, I have developed a passion for sailing through both offshore and inshore racing around Tampa Bay. With a background in IT, Finance and Accounting, I lead business process improvement at Rooms To Go. I enjoy spending time with my parents, participating in Twilight Sailing, engaging in the clubs social activities, and volunteering through the Junior League of Tampa. As a Board member, I hope to promote sailing programs for working adults and foster the next generation of sailors at SPYC. I am looking forward to becoming more involved at the club and ensuring SPYC remains a welcoming community for new and existing members.
BRAD DEMINT Intermediate Member Since 2021
As a St. Petersburg native and graduate of Northeast High School, I am deeply engaged in our community. Professionally I am the senior account executive at Greenleaf Title and host of the “How to Win with Brad DeMint” podcast. I am committed to the Club’s success, and aim to contribute my skills and passion as a Board member. Recognizing the potential of the Yacht Club’s development, I leverage my extensive real estate experience to envision growth and enhanced facilities. With a talent for identifying opportunities, I’m dedicated to strategically approaching this development for the benefit of all members. I’ve also served on the Entertainment Committee for the past 2 years planning fun, successful Club events and meeting new people, and look forward to serving you.

The 50th North American Invitational Cruiser Navigation Rally is coming to Tampa Bay in October. St. Petersburg Yacht Club has the privilege to host navigation teams from around the continent who have won regional contests or earned an invitation to compete. All members of the North American Cruiser Association, known as NACA, are invited to attend and participate in activities at the event, October 23rd - 26th.
As an SPYC member, you’re invited to join in as well at the awards dinner at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, in the SPYC Ballroom. Reservations are required. Contestant teams will use SPYC members’ power boats assigned during the boat drawing Wednesday, October 23rd. Volunteer observers and scrutinizers will join the teams during boat trials Thursday and for the competition on Saturday. Friday is reserved for contestants’ calculation time. Their goal is to predict – to tenths of a second – the time it takes to run a 35-nautical-mile course they have not seen in a boat they have never piloted, except for the Thursday trials.
St. Petersburg Yacht Club last hosted the NAI in 2018, and it has a long history with the event. The club has hosted five others and canceled the 1999 event because of Hurricane Irene. Formidable competitors in Predicted Log, as it was previously known, have come from the club, including Dick Joule and Dave Shreve, who won the NAI as SPYC representatives.
(To learn more about the club’s predicted log history, see the Centennial history book, also online at www.spyc.org under “About us” in Part 1, Powerboats.) For more information about this year’s NAI, contact Chuck Goes, Committee Chair.
Junior Sailing Update
by Todd Fedyszyn
The SPYC Junior Sailing Team has had an incredibly busy summer with team members competing all over the USA, Canada, Caribbean and Europe. The hard work put in by each and every team member is starting to pay with some incredible results.
Ten SPYC ILCA sailors spent their summer by making the trip to New Bedford, MA for the ILCA North American Championships from June 6th-9th. This well attended event is always one of the biggest and deep fleets on the calendar each year. Sailing in the ILCA 4 fleet, SPYC’s Gloria Privis finished in 6th Place overall and was also crowned the Female North American Champion for the second year in a row. Finn Cox sailed a strong event to finish in 8th overall. In the ILCA 6 Fleet, Kate Danielson finished in 10th Place overall and was 2nd Place female. Also competing were Sophia Fuller, Reese Ellis, Ryder Ellis, Scarlett Bizouarn, Chris Shaffer, John Hartney and Jad Abedrabbo.
SPYC had 6 sailors travel to the St. Thomas International Opti Regatta hosted in the US Virgin Islands. SPYC sailors Thomas Weidner and Ethan Cox were our top performers finishing in 6th and 13th Place overall. Also competing were Weston Bowie, William Weidner, Tucker Gowens and Daniel Ahlgren.

Also competing were Tucker Gowens, Weston Bowie, Nico Sansone, Kaitlyn Thomley, Clara Reali, Vivienne Barrios and William Weidner. In the USODA Girls Nationals, Clara Reali finished in 40th overall and finished 3rd in the White Fleet.
Four SPYC ILCA sailors competed in the US Sailing Youth Championships hosted by Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island. Sailing in the ILCA 6 fleet, Kate Danielson finished in 12th overall and was the 3rd placed female sailor. Jan Mistak finished in 15th overall, Ryder Ellis was 23rd and John Hartney 28th. Callen Burnett finished third overall in the ILCA 7 Fleet!
Our ILCA Sailors all travelled to St. Margaret’s Bay, Nova Scotia to compete in the ILCA Canadian Championships. Sailing in the ILCA 6 fleet, SPYC’s Jan Mistak and John Hartney performed very well finishing in 6th and 8th overall. In the ILCA 4 fleet, Gloria Privis finished in 3rd Place overall and was followed by Adam Mendelblatt in 7th. Also competing were Reid Mendelblatt, Scarlett Bizouarn, Chris Shaffer and Sophia Fuller.
Our SPYC Opti Sailors also competed in the USODA Team Race National Championships with our SPYC 1 team comprised of Constantino Conrad, Dalton Cellamare, Thomas Weidner and Bennett Lamb qualifying for the Gold Fleet. Junior Sailing Program - Since 1919
In 1919, a Junior Yacht Club was created within SPYC whose facilities were initially located on the Club docks. Over time the need was seen to move the Juniors to a separate location away from the Club and it’s amenities – specifically a pool table to which the Juniors would sneak for a game of “snooker” (pool) until chased away by `less than amused’ senior members.
SPYC eventually found a building to lease on the “South Mole” (now Demen’s Landing) owned by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. After lots of back breaking work (done mostly by Juniors) the building was ready to “remodel”. That first and only Junior Yacht Club building was divided into a boat storage and maintenance section, a classroom, and a recreation section. Amongst other things, the recreation room featured, of all things, a pool table! When the wind wasn’t right for sailing, the Juniors shared their table with adult Fish Class sailors. This afforded them a chance to interact with the older more experienced sailors on their own turf. What an opportunity!
During the mid 1970s, the City acquired the South Mole and began to develop it into a park and marina complex and the Juniors had to move to temporary facilities on Marina Point... Due to efforts led by Cmdre Blanchard Jolly to retain a Junior Sailing Program on the downtown waterfront, an agreement was made with the City in 1977, that had the city build a $300k city-owned facility – the Sailing Center – with SPYC staffing, equipping and operating the facility at its expense under a management contract with the City.
“For every child who develops into a national champion or collegiate AllAmerican, there have been perhaps hundreds who have learned tenacity, selfreliance, team work and the multiple lessons that Tampa Bay can teach – lessons that go far beyond merely sailing a boat.”
The Sailing Center has since then provided youth the opportunity to learn to sail and to compete at the highest levels.

See you in the Hallways!

Sheriff's offices are typically tasked with: operating jails, security at courthouses and county buildings, protection of judges and juries, preventing breaches of the peace, and coordinating with city police departments. Sheriff's offices may also be responsible for security in public areas and events. Sounds like a HUGE job, doesn’t it?
The Woman’s Club kick off event will feature Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri telling us numerous facts about our county. How does he manage to keep us safe in a county of 959,918 people, 38 miles in length and 15 miles wide, coordinating with 24 different municipalities? On top of that, he works with Pinellas County Schools on programs for family and youth needs, manages 3,000 inmates and 700 employees in our county jail system. He is also responsible for keeping 850 law enforcement employees interacting to keep our region a great place to call home.
Speaker Presentation is OPEN TO ALL SPYC MEMBERS:
Come join us on September 12th at 5:30 pm to hear this talented professional provide you answers to some of these questions from his 13 years of elected service for Pinellas residents. His expertise has also been recognized and respected nationally and statewide for issues which deal with varied crimes and needs. After the presentation, he will be available for a Q&A session, as time permits. SPYC members are encouraged to come to this very informative evening.
Want to join the Woman's Club? Visit the "Clubs Within the Club" webpage at www.spyc.org for information on how to join.

In the normal sense of the word we don’t really have minutes of the Wing Shooters Society meetings. Normal minutes wouldn’t capture the essence of our meeting. We have "Not Exactly the Minutes" which by design are a more inclusive report on what actually happens in that room on the second Thursday of every month. There’s a rowdy nature to our gatherings that needs to be captured and shared with members that are not there.
Those wishing to join the Wing Shooters Society are encouraged to contact Frank Robinson at fhr506@gmail.com
The Grand Marshal’s task is to plow through the agenda without losing control and without adversely squelching the free spirited banter that everyone of us enjoys. Capturing the business of the meeting as well as the wisecracks continuously emanating from every corner of the table is the task of the scribe. Whether it’s a whisper or a blurted interruption, these frequent intrusions into the agenda can be the comical highlight of the evening. An inclusive report by the scribe ensures that those absent miss nothing, well almost nothing. That almost nothing adjunction needs an explanation. It’s the joke that opens the meeting. The jokes are mostly not printable and don’t leave the Quarterdeck room. If you want to hear the joke, you need to attend the meeting.

The Broads have been on hiatus this summer, but we have big plans for the upcoming sailing season. We invite all women who are interested in sailing to join us on Saturdays beginning September 19th.
You might ask: What is a typical day with the Broad Reachers like? We roll in around 8:45 at the trailer at the north parking lot at PAG, many of us have a hot cup of coffee in hand!
Working together, we launch and rig the boats, and then we go over the plan for the session. We typically either practice some skills or have fun races, some of them with holiday themes and maybe even costumes! We finish up on the water around 11:30, and then we work together to put everything away. Many of us stay for lunch and adult beverages (and sailing stories).
We sail in Optimist Prams, so you are the captain of your own vessel. These prams are very forgiving, and if you don’t know how to sail, we will teach you. Best of all, you get to know a community of vital, involved, and active women at SPYC, as well as the awesome women and educational programs at the Florida Women’s Sailing Association (FWSA). Women who are "sail curious" should check us out! Contact our Captain, Gloria Davis: gloriadavis1200@gmail.com
Applications are available at the Downtown Clubhouse. Membership in the Salty Sisters is open to women members of the SPYC who have sailing experience and eager to participate in sailing, race committee and other exciting water related activities.
WELCOME ABOARD!
For more information please contact: Els Wiemken at Elswiemken@gmail.com OR Trisha Birkenstock at trishab@tampabay.rr.com
OUR MISSION:
"To promote sailing and to assist our members in becoming more proficient in the science of sailing."

Salty Sisters Barbara Mehaffey, Helle Getz and PC Gina Bowden-Pierce worked with the Chicago Yacht Club Race Committee on the 2024 Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series event June 7th - 9th on Lake Michigan in Chicago. Gina said it was a terrific experience with a few howling wind moments each day and added, if anyone ever gets an opportunity to work with other clubs, they should grab the opportunity. Their positions included Helle as Deputy Race Officer, Barbara - Senior Recorder, and Gina - Senior Flags. What an experience!
In early July, five Salty Sisters and two Briney Brothers were invited to participate in the running of the 115th Chicago to Mackinac Race. Duties included registration, boat inspections, docking, and race committee for both the Illinois starts and Michigan finishes.
From the Salty Sisters: PC Jennifer Parramore, Barbara Mehaffey, Helle Getz, PC Gina Bowden-Pierce, and Gail Poffenberger. The Salties were joined by Briny Brothers Peter Hood and Tom Poffenberger. They also celebrated Helle Getz’s 50th time on Race Committee for this race!!
During the summer months, the Salty Sisters always find different ways to get together and have some fun, including pool parties, meeting at different places for lunch, and of course, playing bridge. On July 17th, about 40 Salty Sisters enjoyed Wednesday morning in and around the SPYC downtown pool.
The pool party was organized by Social Chair Shelly Watkins and PC Carol Hansen. Enjoying the warm sunny weather about 25 Participants took to the water to relax, enjoy a cocktail, and play pool volleyball. A “picnic” style lunch topped of the fun before adjourning to the card room for traditional afternoon of Mahjongg, Rummy Cube, and playing Bridge.

The Golf Club is returning after a summer hiatus, as many of our members snowbird up north for the summer. This past spring we had our second annual overnight trip to Mission Inn up in Howey-In-The-Hills. We enjoyed two days of 18 holes of golf followed by dinner at El Conquistador and dancing in the hospitality suite. Other recent monthly golf outings have included Isla Del Sol and the Vinoy.
Congratulations to all the winning teams at these outings! A big welcome to our recent new members: Michelle & Chris Hughes, Angela & William Graziani, Dolle & Matt Towery, Angela & Bobby Robertson, Wynne & Robert Shapiro, Linda & Roger Dow, Dawn & William Papenfuss, and Joe Hynes & Dennis Murphy. Our group is comprised of a diverse mix of people with all skill levels of golf. We typically play a four person scramble format once a month at a different course in the Tampa Bay Area.
Our next monthly meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 10th - 6:00 pm at the downtown clubhouse. Check the marquis sign at the front entrance for the specific room location. Meetings include a 50/50 raffle, planning future outings, fun games and prizes, guest speakers, and general golf camaraderie. Many members also stay after the meeting to have dinner together at the Grille or the Tiki Bar.
Please direct all future membership inquiries for the Golf Group to Bekah Rush at rush. rebekah@gmail.com or meet us in person at one of our monthly meetings.

Our Cruising Fleet has been braving the heat over the summer, enjoying monthly cruises, Day Trippers outings, and a summer party. Who says it’s too hot to even go boating…not the Cruising Fleet! Of course pools and cold beverages help, and there have been plenty of both this summer.
Our June Cruising Fleet dinner featured a fun slide show recap of our 2024 April & May Commodore’s Cruises. Members enjoyed hearing entertaining stories and some tall fish tales from the cruisers who participated in the cruises, which generated a lot of excitement and anticipation for our 2025 Commodore’s Cruise!
Longboat Key Club Moorings was the destination of our June cruise, in two groups to accommodate all boats. Cruisers were able to take advantage of the beautiful pool, beach, and restaurants at the Longboat Key Resort just down the street from the marina. Kite flying and volleyball on the beach were highlights, and both groups enjoyed some great group dinners together. Thanks to Sue & Jeff Cooper and Kelly Lee & Jay Rice for serving as Port Directors!
In July our Day Trippers headed to Shore Restaurant on Longboat Key, a slightly longer than usual day cruise but it was a beautiful day on the water. There are plenty of docks at Shore, and the food and camaraderie were both amazing. July also included a fun Mid-Summer party at Pass-aGrille where 60 cruisers enjoyed a fantastic buffet and social time. Several members came by boat and docked overnight and were able to spend some relaxing time cooling off in the pool.
In August, the Cruising Fleet was scheduled to cruise to Tampa Yacht & Country Club in two groups. Unfortunately, the TYC sustained considerable damage from tropical storm Debby and we regretfully had to cancel our planned cruises. Many thanks to Port Directors Barbara & Heber Weller and Jaleen Hartney who had two great weekends planned for our cruisers. We look forward to visiting the Tampa Yacht Club at another time.
[UPCOMING Cruising Fleet Events:
•September 5th: Luncheon meeting – speaker Chantal Begin, USF Professor, Crew Leader for the all-female crew who won the 2023-2024 Worlds Toughest Row
•September 13th -15th: Marina Jack's
•October: Anna Maria/Galati in 2 groups Oct 18th -20th & Oct 25th - 27th

May 23rd was our last meeting of the year and under the direction of Wagon Master, Angela Kowalik. Angela along with Gary Quilla were instrumental in founding the club. She has been a great leader in organizing it and providing interesting programs. A special thanks to Angela and Brian because there would not be a club without them. We wish her and husband, Brian, the best as they go on their next RV adventure of leading a caravan on a trip to Alaska and look forward to when they return to share great photos of their trip.
The May 23rd meeting at the Pass-a-Grille clubhouse featured a program on tire blowouts and with tips on what and what not to do. Rick and Sarah shared their experience with a left front blowout on busy I-10.
The new Wagon Masters will be Rick & Sarah Moseley. We look forward to the coming year with new members and new RV trips. Please join us if you have an RV of any type or are thinking about what it would be like to own one. If you own an RV please share a photo from one of your trips The next meeting is on September 10th - 5:30 pm at the downtown clubhouse. The meeting will be about saving money on fuel!

We have an experienced, passionate group of riders that have traveled the continents on motorcycles together. The Riders Club welcomes you to join us. Weather permitting, we usually gather on Thursday or Friday mornings for a ride. The rides are very scenic and always involve a lunch somewhere unique and delicious.
This year we have riding events planned for the Colorado Rockies and Sturgis SD, Western NC including part of TN, GA and SC. Stay tuned for information on these rides as things develop.
Last month I had one of the best riding experiences of my life. If you look at the map you can see the four states we road through. The theme of the event, and words most spoken, were “Let’s Take The Road Less Traveled." Like the book the roads we choose highlighted individualism and nonconformity. If you seldom ride or ride a lot, please join us. You’ll be glad you did! The spirit of friendship and community is second to none.
