COMMODORE’S LOG FINAL CHAPTER
Dear fellow members...
As this is my final article I wanted to recap some of the accomplishments of your Board and Committees this year. We established a Dock Project Management (DPM) team early this year chaired by your Treasurer Kevin Cross to oversee the dock project. They have met weekly with the contractor and engineer to keep the project moving forward. I am happy to report the dock is still on schedule for reopening. We also established a Building Reconstruction Oversight Committee (BROC) chaired by Jeff Howells who is meeting regularly to stay on schedule to replace the downtown clubhouse. They have made great progress in establishing the parameters of construction and are now interviewing several local architects to help design the new building. In the meantime, and in order to keep the current facility attractive to our members, we have replaced all the tiki and pool deck furniture along with our front doors leading to the Compass Room. We recently finished the repurposing of the Commodores Lounge and Parkview Rooms and installed new LED lighting in the Ballroom.
The Club had a historic regatta season hosting more than 25 race events including the J70 World Championship, the J24 North American Championship and the Flying Dutchman Worlds. The season was capped off by the 52nd running of the Regata Del Sol al Sol race to Mexico with 18 boats participating. I was honored to present a Proclamation from our City to the Mayor of Isla Mujeres commemorating our sister-city relationship over these many years.
Your Board approved the formation of a new 501c(3) nonprofit benefiting our sailing center. The St. Petersburg Sailing Foundation, Inc. is now in place to accept tax deductible gifts to enhance our sailing and educational programs while expanding our outreach in the community. To that end, over 350 kids enjoyed our summer sailing camp this year. I would ask you to consider a donation to this worthy cause.
We launched a Magical History Tour developed by our Club Historian, Trisha Birkenstock, to share the long history of our Club and its many accomplishments with our membership. The Club also hosted the Green Flag luncheon, kick-off party, for the St. Petersburg Grand Prix attended by many local dignitaries and Indycar drivers. This has become the “go to” event for race week. I’m pleased to report that the club has 103 new members through July of this year.
October is set to be a month full of engaging events and opportunities to connect with fellow members. Our Dance Lessons continue, offering the perfect chance to refine your moves for upcoming gatherings. We're also for our Fall Etiquette Classes, where youth members can brush up on social graces in a fun and interactive environment. A highlight of the month will be our Annual Meeting on October 8th, where we'll also host the Adult Yachting Recognition Awards to celebrate the achievements of our sailing community. Wine enthusiasts won't want to miss our Wine Society events and Gourmet Wine Dinners, where you'll have the chance to explore exquisite pairings and learn from experts. And that's just the beginning—October is packed with even more activities that promise to make this fall truly memorable.
Lastly, I want to thank the membership for entrusting me to be your Commodore this past year. It has been a challenging year but with the support of the Flag, Board and membership we have made great strides as I have outlined herein. I have had the honor to meet many of you this past year along with yacht club dignitaries from around the world. It has been a rewarding journey and I have been so proud to represent the St. Petersburg Yacht Club along the way. The Club is in good hands as I pass the gavel to Commodore Divito, the Flag Officers and Board. As always, I wish you fair winds and following seas………..
Cordially, Scott Boyle, Commodore

YOU'RE INVITED!
by Gina Bowden-Pierce
SPYC members: You’re invited to join the host committee at the 50th North American Invitational Cruiser Navigation Rally Celebration Dinner!
St. Petersburg Yacht Club is welcoming navigation teams who have won regional contests or earned an invitation to compete. All members of the North American Cruiser Association, known as NACA, are invited to attend and participate in activities at the event, October 23rd - 26th. As an SPYC member, you and your guests are invited to join the awards dinner on:
Saturday, October 26th ~ 6:30 pm ~ SPYC Ballroom
Dinner is $75 (inclusive per person) ~ Reservations are required
Sign up on the SPYC app, on the website in the Event Calendar section or call Catering at (727) 892-6882 and let them know you’d like to join us for the dinner.
Contestant teams will use SPYC members’ power boats assigned during the boat drawing on Wednesday, October 23rd. Boat trials will be Thursday, and the competition is Saturday. Friday is reserved for contestants’ calculation time. Their goal is to predict – to tenths of a second – the time it takes to run a 35-nautical-mile course they have never seen in a boat they have not run except for during the Thursday trials. St. Petersburg Yacht Club last hosted the NAI in 2018, and it has a long history with the event. The club has hosted five other NAIs and canceled the 1999 event because of Hurricane Irene. For more information about this year’s NAI, contact Chuck Goes, committee chair.
Cruiser Navigation Program - Since 1966
The Cruiser Nav program began here in 1966 under the direction L.J. “Kell” Hennessy. The first competition referred to as “Predicted Log” was held in June 1967 hosted by SPYC under the direction of then commodore Theodore “ Ted ” Tolson who was navigating the winning vessel Mildred owned by Harold Davenport
In this competition, each skipper predicts his time along a predetermined course. He then runs the course and, without a watch or other time -keeping device, tries to make his predictions good. An award is given each year to the Cruiser Navigator with the lowest percentage of error. The Club used to have 12 contests a year and had high point trophies for Spring and Fall.
in the interest of promoting high standards of knowledge in piloting, seamanship and precision navigation through predicted logging.
Member David L. Shreve was involved in the North American Cruiser Assoc. [NACA] from its founding and is known all over this hemisphere for the trophies he created and crafted for the NAI [North American Invitational ].
Shreve crafted SPYC Predicted Log Champion yachts
You can find Shreve-made trophies, plaques and numerous items in the Powerboat trophy case and around the Club such as the NACA brass cannon trophies and many of the SPYC Cruiser Navigation year end trophies such as the wooden half models of each SPYC club champion’s yacht [displayed in the Heritage Lounge–pictured above].
In 1973, Mr. Shreve won the first NAI contest run in San Diego, CA, with Kell Hennessy, navigator. Both he and Kell have been recognized for their contributions to the sport as recipients of the “NACA Lou Gandelman” trophy awarded to a member who has made a significant contribution to the sport of Cruiser Navigation contests Other SPYC recipients of this trophy include Robert Van Landingham (2011) who has been a NACA commodore and staunch supporter and competitor in these events. In 2001, Van Landingham won the North American Cruiser Championship with Dave Shreve as navigator!
Dave Shreve & Kell Hennessy recipients of the first NAI trophy in 1973
North American Invitational Trophy
Presented by Yachting Publications to the North American Cruiser Assoc. in 1973 to the top skipper in the NAI . [The sundial with a magnifying glass is set to trigger the mounted cannon exactly at noon.] Keeper trophies have traditionally been given to the winners which were hand crafted by Mr. Shreve from brass salvaged from beached boats and sunken ships!
For the “rest of the story” – join us on a History Tour! Better yet – join the History Team!!! See you in the Hallways!

We have an experienced, passionate group of riders that have traveled far and wide on motorcycles together. The Riders Club welcomes you to join us. Weather permitting, we usually gather on Thursday or Friday mornings for a ride. The rides are very scenic and always involve a lunch somewhere unique and delicious. In addition, throughout the year our group will ride several continents as well.
Recently the Rider's Club just completed several weeks of incredible scenic riding. If you look at the map (to the right), and the Rockies itinerary (below), you can see the states we covered, including Canada. We learned occasional roadblocks occur, and bear spray repellant was recommended. We drew straws to determine who would actually spray the bear if needed.
If you seldom ride or ride a lot, please join us. You’ll be glad you did! The spirit of friendship and community is second to none.

The Ladies at the Beach aren’t all pink and fluff, although there was much fun and laughter at the first event of the year as we celebrated Barbie’s “coming of age”. On October 21st the Ladies Beach Club will be hearing from guest speaker Kelly Kipnis on “Your Age vs. Your Brain Age” and how to improve both. Kelly has great tips and medical data to help us improve our brain health. Join us as we learn how to keep our brain healthy and our minds sharp.
There is so much more in store for this year at the LBC, and it’s not too late to be a part of the fun. Noted author, Nancy Sindelar, is returning with new accounts of Hemingway; Author Monica Kile will walk us through the history of St. Petersburg; Flamenco dancing history and demonstration; fashion show and so much more! Mahjongg meets every Monday and there are so many special interest groups to be involved in.

Our fall sailing season is always preceded by a "Welcome Back Party" and this year’s get together on September 4th, with the theme of “Lilly Pulitzer Garden Party”, was well attended. The room was decorated with beautiful floral bouquets. It was a lovely opportunity for members, some of whom have not attended meetings in some time, to become reacquainted. Captain Valerie Massingill recognized those nineteen Salties who have not attended in a while. Thanks to Social Chair Shelly Watkins and her Committee for a job well done!!
During the two weeks prior to our welcome back party, Co-Captain Beverly Smoak organized another successful powerboat class with instructor Zac Oppenheim. There were four boats with ten participants out on the water learning how to dock and control the boats in tight situations. The highlight of the two weeks was the “go fast” slalom course. Participating this year were: PC Sherry Welch, Katie Rodgers, KT Trudeau, Mik Severini, Rosemary Sherman, Shelly Watkins, Anna Streufert, Gretchen Tenbrock, PC Gina Bowden-Pierce, PC Carol Hansen, and PC Valerie Massingill.
Ardith Rutland, who has been called the “Founding Mother” of the Salty Sisters, passed away at age 93 on August 23, 2024. She had a colorful personality, well known for her philanthropy, and was a member of our organization for 60 years. Ardith also was one of the six original members of the Florida Women’s Sailing Association (FWSA).

Broad Reachers kicked off another great year this September. We held our annual planning meeting on September 7th, with an awesome lunch prepared by the great staff at PAG. We went over the plans for the rest of the year and tweaked our schedule. We have a lot of fun Saturdays ahead of us sailing off the dock at PAG. Some highlights include our Halloween Costume Races, Santa Hat Races, and our Valentine’s Day Races, where we wear pink and red.
If you are a woman who is new to the club, or maybe new to sailing, we welcome you to come and sail with us! We will train you on the prams, and coach you on the water too! Contact Captain, Gloria Davis: gloriadavis1200@gmail.com.

OThe Broads are running several FWSA events this year. First up is the Commodore Lucas Cup on October 11th. We field all 14 prams, and up to two racers per club can participate to try to win the big trophy. This is a fun event, and it’s cool to see all the prams lined up at the floating docks and then sailing around the harbor off the club.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to Hurricane Helene these events at Pass-a-Grille have been cancelled.
ur meeting location for this month will be held at the Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse on Monday, October 7th at 5:30 pm. Our meeting will be about organizations that provide help/assistance/insurance specifically to RV owners. They often provide more than just a tow.
Some of the members got together for a great Labor Day camping trip at the Ortona Lock South Pat and Denise Remus along with Rick and Sarah Moseley enjoyed watching the boats pass through the lock which was next to the camping area. This was a Corp of Engineers park, who provide beautiful campsites on lakes or waterways for very small fees. Sarah and Rick took a short drive and revisited Roland Martin’s Marina in Lewiston, FL. October should bring some cool breezes and thoughts of camping and enjoying sitting outside by your camper. Join us!
To join the group and keep up with our events where we will be making adventures happen, please contact Rick & Sarah Moseley at: RVlandcruisers@icloud.com

Tropical Storm Debby may have caused our August cruises to Tampa Yacht Club to be canceled, but it didn’t deter our Day Trippers from enjoying a day on the water. We did, however, decide to stay closer to home given the uncertain forecasts and the daily pop-up storms. On August 29th the group met at Fresco’s Waterfront Restaurant for social time and a delicious lunch. Those who came by boat were happy to find that we were dining inside out of the heat. It was a welcome opportunity to catch up with fellow cruisers and friends after a long summer when many of our cruisers typically escape to cooler destinations.
Our September Luncheon program featured Chantale Begin as our speaker. Chantale is a biology professor at USF, and she was the Crew Leader for the all-female team, Salty Science, who rowed across the Atlantic to win the 2023-2024 Worlds Toughest Row. Chantale and three female crew mates entered the competition to raise awareness for marine conservation - they rowed across the ocean, to save the oceans! The story of the conditions they faced and the mental and physical perseverance it took to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean in a 28-foot rowboat was beyond awe-inspiring.
Our Cruising Fleet destination for September was Marina Jacks in Sarasota. The group enjoyed docktails on the dock followed by a delicious dinner with a view at Marina Jacks on Friday night, and on Saturday night had the opportunity to dine at one of two fabulous restaurants in downtown Sarasota. Cruisers spent the day Saturday visiting the Ringling Museum, Mote Marine Aquarium, Sarasota Botanical Gardens, and shopping in downtown Sarasota or St. Armands Circle. Thanks to Port Directors Sue and Jeff Cooper for planning a great weekend for the group. Tune in to next month’s Smooth Sailing for photos!
UPCOMING Cruising Fleet Events:
•October 3rd Dinner Meeting, Speaker John Sinnott MD, Member and previous Chair of the USF Department of Internal Medicine, will speak on “Medical Emergency Preparation and Procedures on the Seas”

Do you remember the St. Petersburg municipal bus with a Bert Smith ad showing a VW Beetle on the beach? That was the work of a Wing Shooter known as Best Dressed. Dave Miller grew up in St. Petersburg and had a short stint working for the Department of Natural Resources. His job was to organize preserved jars of fish. Every species of fish in the Gulf organized by family/genus/species. Thousands of jars of alcohol with a fish inside.
Those wishing to join the Wing Shooters Society are encouraged to contact Frank Robinson at fhr506@gmail.com
That was his job in high school. On that job he decided never to work for the government again. After high school Dave went to work in the family business, Miller Meats in Pinellas Park. Their specialty was sausage and smoked meats, 23 choices. That business was sold, it’s now Marko’s Meat and Deli. While working the in the family business Dave was in charge of designing the weekly ads. He became very good as the advertising industry went digital. When the family business was sold he was hired by an advertising agency that had the municipal bus contract.
Everybody’s story usually has twists. There’s not enough space here to include owning a horse farm, jumping out of a plane nearly 300 times or joining the YC at age 16. Those are stories to ask Dave at the bar. Why does Dave own the Best Dressed tag? That’s easy. When we are out shooting clays, Dave stands out. The rest of us just don’t make the grade. The Wing Shooter’s Society has many interesting members with stories like Dave’s.
