In Grade 6 of the MYP, Taiko drumming and African Marimba are introduced. Performance on the Japanese Taiko drums epitomizes the synchronization of mind, body and spirit. The artform derives its movement and philosophy from Japanese martial arts like Karate and Judo. Performers work toward a powerful synchronization of rhythms and martial arts styled movement called Kata. On the other hand, African marimba music tends to be upbeat and free. Movement and dance are an integral part of African culture, and this music is meant to move you, to get you to dance and express your emotions through joyful rhythms.
SEVEN
Music in Grade 7 continues with Japanese Taiko Drumming and African Marimba skills. On the Taiko drums, students learn a taiko piece written by a group in Tokyo called Oedo Sukuroku. They developed the Josuke “angled drum stands which in turn created a specific drumming and movement style, performed on Taiko drums. A signature piece performed in this style is called Yodan. Our version of Yodan involves learning some complex rhythms and movements with a partner, and in turn when performed together, the group becomes a powerful musical entity. On African marimba, the students learn to use their creative expression on this melodic instrument to compose music that will emotionally support a scene from Planet Earth.
EIGHT
Music in Grade 8 further develops students’ skills in music. Music theory, memorization, movement, teamwork, dynamics, control, and self-management are some of the higher level concepts that students are exposed to this term. They explore these concepts by learning a more professional Japanese Taiko performance that expands on a piece they learned in grade six called Matsuri. As well, on African Marimba they use their understanding of music theory to compose a marimba piece in an A B A form, and in collaboration with a small group of their choosing.

Students produced a sketchbook that showcases their technical skills using coloured pencils. They learned contouring, layering, and burnishing. Grade 6 students outlined their knowledge of art as a form of language and wrote down artistic intentions for the term. Using unique creative-thinking behaviours, they created a final drawing of a compound word (such as firefly, honeymoon, fortnight, and bedtime) that strives to communicate the word itself without actually being a literal drawing of that word as it appears in reality. Students then responded to their own work and critiqued their peers’ artwork. Not only did students learn about their signature styles as artists, but students also formed their own stances on how art is a language and how language can be represented in art.
SEVEN Students produced a sketchbook with their lecture-based and discussion-based investigations and reflections on how fashion is an expression of emotions, personal identity, and culture. Grade 7 students also practiced technical skills in oil pastels, such as stippling, scumbling, and sgraffito. In the process, students formed their own stances on social and political issues regarding fashion. In the end, students created a final drawing of an article of clothing that strives to represent their identity, stories, and feelings.
EIGHT Art Project on Display - Scratchboard self-portraits and watercolour mixed media illustrations. Students will share their Art works created in a student lead exhibition skit, the processes and ideas behind their work will be discussed and Some students will lead a guided demo of art making.
SIX During the Puppetry unit, students exercised their creative thinking and character development skills by creating puppets. Students explored what makes a character’s identity, and experimented in innovative ways to develop artistic intentions through a puppetry performance. Students then continued to build on those skills during the Improv unit while also adding on to their social and communication skills. Students explored how to transfer ideas by discovering how life experiences influence their performances and vice versa.
SEVEN Get ready for the world’s most eccentric, silly and fantastically entertaining show and tell party this year. Watch as the Grade 7 students perform their self-created characters, each sharing a personal item for a ‘Show and Tell’ like no other.
EIGHT In a time when laughter is needed more than ever, the Grade 8 class has got you covered. This year, the students are going to be performing an abridged version of Jonathan Rand’s Check Please!, a play “that follows a series of blind dinner dates that couldn’t get any worse -- until they do.” (Playscripts.com)
