Title: Shield Medium: Cardboard, spackle, clay Size: 30 cm (length) x 21 cm (width) x 18 cm (height) Intention: This sculpture of a human figurine laying inside a geodesic form represents how people can feel the need to cover up the body. The shell has been cracked and made partially open. This emulates the uncovering of physical aspects of oneself, in a world where shame and opposition to physical weakness is present. Like a turtle’s shell, it is green and formed from repeating shapes. However, this shell is made out of triangles, showing how humans have built up a shield over their appearance.

Title: Sheep Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Size: 36 cm x 46 cm Intention: The sheep stand amidst many typical obstacles like a predatory wolf, storm clouds, and vicious thorns creeping up on the side, yet do not show signs of fear, representing the covering up of fear and emotions in the midst of danger. The relaxed body posture of the sheep and the seemingly idyllic rolling hills contrast against the dangerous connotations of other objects in the painting. This addresses how people can often feel fear needs to be covered up, in order to not seem weak.

Title: Praise Medium: India Ink on Ceramic Tile Size: 61 cm x 61 cm Intention: This piece starts off with an abstract image of lines. The individual square tiles can be rearranged to form a more comprehensible inked drawing of hands reaching out. This embodies the act of worship and praise seen in different religions. In the abstract form, one is not able to see the raw belief in a time of worship. This represents the hiding of certain beliefs and values in society. Often, people cannot express their spirituality, for fear of previous misconceptions or potential harm.

Title: What Matters? Medium: Collage Size: 60 cm x 43 cm each Intention: This piece juxtaposes significant world issues with fashion media to show how people are told to have concern over surface level issues and serious problems are covered up. The models’ clothes being made out of the background emphasizes how sacrifice, negative impact on the ocean, and the millions who are vulnerable are issues that are glossed over. Yet the products encourage oil spills and human trafficking. I was inspired by Anna Bu Kliewer’s merging of nature and humans in her collages.

Title: Energy Medium: Linocut print Size: 30.5 cm x 30.5 cm each Intention: This piece shows the layering of a prominent, bold and high energy power plant covering small empty batteries. The power plant is faded, signifying weak facades that are put up to appear positive and energetic to other people. In reality, under the surface, the empty batteries are a representation of real feelings at that moment. The small figure in the last panel signifies the building up and strengthening of a wall to cover up the emotions that cannot be released from under the surface.

Title: At the End of the Day Medium: Acrylic paint on burlap cloth Size: 60 cm x 47 cm Intention: This painting of a merged Singaporean cityscape on a rough burlap cloth is inspired by Tsuyoshi Maekawa’s use of burlap in his pieces. The city is associated with status and money. This contrasts with the humble connotations of the burlap fabric, highlighting the importance of sacrifice and humble beginnings. When people cover up their past, this is a reminder that their success today would not have happened without their origins. Personally, my family’s humble beginnings have formed my life.

Title: Smooth Medium: Wooden Board Size: 86 cm x 79 cm Intention: This interactive piece allows viewers to participate in covering up imperfections. A blank, white board symbolizes a perfect body. The colour white represents cleanliness, which is then tainted by the visible dents and marks on the board. The more imperfections, the more battered the board is, which some may feel the need to cover. Spackle and a scraper is next to the board, inviting the audience to smooth over the blemishes, restoring the white colour and flat texture of the perfect wall.
