Thought Room KIRSTEN

Title: Hide n’ Seek Medium: Acrylic on bristol Size: 7.3 x 6.7 cm x3 Intention: This miniatures series shows a seemingly normal room, however, as the image progresses the room becomes more and more distorted. What first seems like a boy peeking out, turns out to be a monster. As the mind undergoes stress, your brain starts to obscure. This series is a visual depiction of how anxiety distorts the brain. This was inspired by the creative style of artist Vanessa Smith’s Two Chairs with a Crow.

Title: Apathy Beware Medium: India ink on watercolour paper, Conte, Pencil Crayon Size: 55.9 x 76.2 cm Intention: When faced with immensely large obstacles, it can feel very intimidating and overwhelming. Being overwhelmed causes anxiety. As humans, a natural response to obstacles is to avoid and cry (figure). Although crying creates a temporary relief of tension and stress, a constant recurrence can cause permanent damage. The less evident face portrays an emotionally exhausted man highlighting how people are less likely to notice his suffering, as well he is less likely to express his pain.

Title: Limbo Medium: Digital print Size: 91.4 x 182.9 cm Intention: This piece is composed of a series of curved lines. The lines evoke movement, creating a hypnotic, trance-like feeling. This gives a sensory experience of how life is experienced through apathy. Apathy causes people to lose touch with their surroundings, and go through life without being fully present in the moment. A faint image is in the background. The eye presents the sensory experience and how we perceive things, however that is altered because of apathy. This piece was inspired by Bridget Riley.

Title: Under the Sheets Medium: Acrylic painting on canvas, wireframe and fabric overlay Size: 45.7 x 70 x 38.1 cm Intention: As a child, bedsheets are the best place to hide. Surrounded by the comfort of my bedsheets, I have the freedom to do whatever I want in a space that is my own. Using fabric that is a similar colour to my own sheets, the awning like structure creates a cozy and intimate feeling that resonates with everyone.

Title: Boxed Medium: Collage with acrylic paint and dyed string Size: 35.0 x 55.4 cm Intention: Compartmentalization can result in neglecting issues that we avoid. The image is an Icelandic sheep event called Rettir. A sheep sorting pen with sections representing parts of the brain. Sections filled with sheep, others have minimal. The sheeps represents the time spent on each section. Some parts spend lots, others, barely any. The string acts as walls of division further isolating thoughts and feelings. By taking away the string it breaks down the walls and releasing bottled up emotions.

Title: Paradise Hidden Medium: Linocut on rice paper Size: 23.5 x 29.5 cm Intention: The image of this piece is a Japanese rock garden, a place of tranquility and serenity. The patterns of lines made with piles of rocks create a calming sensation that relaxes the mind. The image shows the back corner of the rock garden. This represents the idea of taking notice in small details that we often miss or disregard. By highlighting elements that are always there but aren’t recognized, it puts things into a new perspective.
