TOOLS FOR LANGUAGE MASTERY

As someone who has spent time studying both Spanish and French, something that has helped me the most is consuming media in the language that I am studying. I know teachers always say to watch movies, read, and listen to music in whatever language you are learning, and most people just brush it off, but I swear it's helpful! So, for you, I have crowdsourced a list of various types of media to consume for the betterment of your language comprehension. I hope you find something that you like! (Bali C-M 2021)

? S M A EX ADVICE, REFLECTIONS, AND WORDS OF WISDOM FROM THE GRADE 12s

WHAT EVEN ARE MOCK EXAMS? Mock exams happen once in January of grade 12. These exams are really helpful for applying to university as they are the best prediction of our final marks. For our grade 12 mocks, we had exams for a different subject each day, and did up to three papers in one day!

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH YOU KNEW BEFORE? Bring pencils and erasers and rulers because you need that for biology/chemistry (multiple choice) No calculators on biology paper 1 Create a list of materials you need for your exams because some exams need highlighters and rulers

ADVICE THAT YOU HAVE? OUR SCHEDULE: MONDAY: English + Chemistry TUESDAY: Languages WEDNESDAY: Study Day THURSDAY: Mathematics FRIDAY: Geography + History MONDAY: Biology + Physics TUESDAY: Business/Art/Psych/Economics

WHAT DID YOU DO WELL? I began studying during Winter Break, this helped to reduce my work load the week before exams Study for one subject at a time especially the night before the exam

WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY? Don’t leave the whole exam blank! Create a study schedule at least 2 weeks before the exams Get more sleep Don’t try and cram every day – make sure to schedule breaks in between

If you struggle with procrastinating, go to youtube and watch a study with me video- the ones with pomodoro breaks and music are good too Go for walks! Do past exam papers because some questions on the mock exam may be from past papers If you cram the night before, it’s hard to cover the whole syllabus focus on the biggest units or the sections you are weakest on (ask yourself if you are studying to master the subject or because you don’t know it) Bring highlighters to english to help differentiate and organize your literary devices Study with friends! Don’t sleep in because your brain is still asleep when you get to school Front load your studying a couple weeks before the exam, then slowly decrease your study load as exams draw nearer. You’ll feel like you have less to study as it goes on because you’ve already crammed most of the information, and you’ll feel less pressured to know things before the exam

Expectations By: Madeleine Q and Grace Y (2023) who am i to say that i could be the first one to meet the expectations? the first to ascend a mountain higher than Everest the first to place their worth in praises, and call themselves “enough” to not have to face the bitter iron of defeat every time i come to you with a test empty proclamations written on the front a comment on my effort not my lack of achievement ‘good job’ is not push me while i’m whisper in my ear they don’t fit my i was proud

‘good enough’ down words of consolation: mood -

mom, dad, you should’ve seen my face smile stretching from ear to ear not yet quenched or belittled chest aching with the juvenile happiness that i know now is so naive. so arbitrary. so false. if life is made of mountains and valleys i suppose that the mountains are your praises the valleys your disappointed faces a “you’ll do better next time” hiding “or else” i’m trying to convince my heart -- the things it wants are the things you want for me: success. worthiness. honour roll. but in the end all my heart wants is love failed attempts at pleasing someone anyone vein networked cracks in a broken heart at least if i don’t talk about it i can pretend it doesn’t exist

By: Emma Y (2021) Through her gates Cross sidewalks lined With used needles And human excrement Her dilapidation written In newspaper windows Pages yellowed, old Transformed Our shining lady Draped in shadowed streets Once bustling With the flapping Of birds which sung The tune of grandmother’s tongue Her rattling cart Reminiscent Of fluid crowds– My people who built A home Away from their homeland

A Warning By: Emma Y (2021)

My body is a barren wasteland In the wake Of her annihilation Eerie–this desolation Figures immortalized in ash Bubbled bricks Pave the path Melted skyscrapers Cower beneath An orange sky Amidst the rubble A child’s cry Goes unanswered

DP VISUAL ARTS Title: goodbye comfort club Artist: Bali C-M Medium: collage from photographs and scans, cardstock, linocut stamps Size: 2’6” x 3’5” Intention: goodbye comfort club is the culmination of my childhood, saying goodbye to the comfort, happiness, and nostalgia of childhood and moving on to the uncertainty of young adulthood. Inspired by April Bey and Keely O’Brien, feelings of childhood are expressed through the bright colour palette and comfort blanket design, the background and “patches” made out of significant objects, and repetition achieved through a linocut stamp design.

Title: When the Earth Reclaims My Body Artist: Kurt Coleman Medium: Watercolor on terracotta modelling clay Size: 13.9 cm x 8.3 cm Intention: Death is my greatest fear, but something comforting I tell myself about it is that my body will feed other living things. The faces around the sides of the pot represent the emotions I feel thinking about death. The living flower contrasts with the clay and death imagery, and the rough sculpting makes it obvious it was made with living hands. The flower doesn’t change the fact that eventually I will die, but this piece is an attempt to accept that death is just another part of life.

EXHIBITION! Title: Metamorphosis Artist: Estella Pires Medium: Canvas, Ceramic plate Intention: This piece conveys moving on from the things holding you back. I wrote on a plate all the things I was holding onto, and then smashed it to symbolize letting these things go. I turned the smashed pieces into a butterfly, to represent metamorphosis and overall moving on.

Title: Glittered Mold Artist: Tia Haughian Medium: Glitter on Vegetables and Fruit Size: 9” x 9” Intention: This piece is a societal commentary on the correlation between the way that people present themselves with who they truly are as a person. The glittered fruits and veggies can be compared to people. Even though someone may seem beautiful on the outside, their bad side will always push through. Time is also a really important part of this piece because as the days go on, mould will grow and you can seem mould pushing through the glitter and sort of showing “its true self”. The whole purpose of this art piece is to spread the message that what matters is on the inside.

Adventure Was Out There By: Angelina S (2022)

I float amid the stars, within a metal tube controlled by the engineers that have kept me safe, and I peer out the thick glass of the ship I reside in. Lavender, rose, oceans and ink mix to create this place I called home while frost forms on my cheekbones and nose. My blue blood rushes to my cheeks. The thoughts within my skull rush past me while I still stare and I dare to dream and to run outside, and to feel the stardust that I am made of with mint green skin and my leaf-coloured freckles. I dare to return home. Though the sounds of combustion and burning rodents still haunt me, rivers of our tears that have been made for the rich to drink out of, and my kind begging at their feet. Adventure was my escape from the hell on home. My heart has fallen for you, adventure, though, it fell too deep into your chasm. I was gone for too long. Sweet home, I apologize for leaving you like this. I miss the velvety feel of your burgundy grass, Which is now nothing but twigs and ash. I hope you’ll still take me. I hope there is still a memento of home.

BEACH CLEANUP! By: Lauren B. and Priya C. (2021) Our CAS project involved cleaning up the parks and beaches in our local community as well as developing a solution to what we observed of the waste collected. A little background as to why we chose to focus our project on this subject is simply the relevancy of the issue. Climate change, pollution, and global warming are often the focuses in our Geography class because it still remains a current global issue. This has a little bit to do with how much waste our world produces. The world generates 2.01 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste annually, with at least 33 percent of that not being managed in an environmentally safe manner. I along with my partner Priya started by first gathering a few volunteers from our grade 12 class to walk down to Trout Lake one afternoon after school. One of the things we wanted to do was collect more substantial data than just the amount of waste collected. So we designed a simple template with items we might encounter while walking around the beach. We created this template with the hopes that our volunteers would tally each item they collected so we could get a better understanding of what was heavily polluting Trout Lake. Fortunately, our volunteers did just that. What we found was cigarette butts, plastic pieces, and food wrappers were common items this team of volunteers collected as we walked. Now that we had this information we decided to create a sort of infographic with a recipe for a snack type of food. After looking through recipes we found this one for sweet potato chips. It’s a sustainable and healthy snack that somewhat mimics a popular food I’m sure a lot of us enjoy. This is to show that engaging in a more sustainable lifestyle doesn’t have to be drastic and only takes a few extra steps from what our current lifestyle habits are like now.

BOOKS: Juliet Takes a Breath (2016): Juliet Milagros Palante is leaving the Bronx and headed to Portland, Oregon. She just came out to her family and isn’t sure if her mom will ever speak to her again. But Juliet has a plan, sort of, one that’s going to help her figure out this whole “Puerto Rican lesbian” thing. She’s interning with the author of her favorite book: Harlowe Brisbane, the ultimate authority on feminism, women’s bodies, and other gay-sounding stuff. Will Juliet be able to figure out her life over the course of one magical summer? Or is she running away from all the problems that seem too big to handle? (GR.9 +) Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (2012): Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship--the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. (GR.8 +) Fun Home (2006): In this graphic memoir, Alison Bechdel charts her fraught relationship with her late father. Distant and exacting, Bruce Bechdel was an English teacher and director of the town funeral home, which Alison and her family referred to as the Fun Home. It was not until college that Alison, who had recently come out as a lesbian, discovered that her father was also gay. A few weeks after this revelation, he was dead, leaving a legacy of mystery for his daughter to resolve. (GR.11 +) Carry On (2015): Simon Snow is the worst Chosen One who's ever been chosen. That's what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he's probably right. Half the time, Simon can't even make his wand work, and the other half, he starts something on fire. His mentor's avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there's a magic-eating monster running around, wearing Simon's face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here — it's their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon's infuriating nemesis didn't even bother to show up. (GR.8 +)

And she’s pretty touchy with her cheerleader friends. Her conservative parents worry that she must be a lesbian and send her off to “sexual redirection” school, where she must, with other lesbians and gays learn how to be straight. (GR.9 +) Queer Eye (2018-): More than a decade after the original series went off the air, Netflix reboots the "Queer Eye" franchise with a new Fab Five and a new setting, trading in the concrete jungle of New York City for communities in and around Atlanta. The style experts forge relationships with men and women who often have different beliefs from them, leading to moments of social commentary interspersed with style advice. (GR.7 +) Tales of the City (2019): Mary Ann returns to present-day San Francisco and is reunited with her daughter and ex-husband, twenty years after leaving them behind to pursue her career. Fleeing the midlife crisis that her picture-perfect Connecticut life created, Mary Ann is quickly drawn back into the orbit of Anna Madrigal, her chosen family and a new generation of queer young residents living at 28 Barbary Lane. (GR.10 +)

"I have submitted an art piece of me called 'Me!'. The story behind it is; Yep, that's me, I have blue hair and I'm non- binary. And that's how I want to express myself. Thanks to Stratford hall for supporting me while I was figuring out my identity, and for being an ally & upstander overall! #LGBTQ2+ #Non- binary #I like turtles" (Salix Z 2027)

"I wanted to submit a piece of online art I've made of me. The piece of art is called "Being Me" The story behind it is that it's a thank you to Stratford Hall for supporting me through my gender identity journey, letting me express myself and find out who I am. I'm still figuring myself out and I will continue to be an ally to everyone!" (Cedar Z 2027)

"Thanks to everyone in SH who is kind & supportive to those in need! Also thanks to the Grade 6 advisors, the G6 advisory leaders, and all the people who spent time editing and editing and editing and practicing and practicing the Turtle Talk presentation! We acknowledge you, and when the time comes, we will support you too! Yay! #BLM #Pride #Support #SH #ILikeTurtles #Art #ROAR #G6isawesome #TurtleTalk" (Kaiden A 2027)

This art piece is referencing my favorite fictional LGBTQ2+ couple on TV, Willow Rosenberg and Tara Maclay in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This particular scene is from the episode Once More with Feeling (Season 6 Episode 7) where they have their own song called Under Your Spell. They are my favorite fictional LGBTQ2+ couple, because Joss Whedon (the creator of Buffy) fought so hard to keep a lesbian relationship and succeeded. This brought to light the struggles and experiences of people in the LGBTQ2+ community: as a couple, they went through so many struggles like homophobia and lost memory, but in the end were stronger together. PR E F E Bali: Wandavision - At first I was hesitant to watch this, because I thought that it being a Disney+ show would make it thematically for a younger audience, but boy was I wrong. The show is quite complex and is genrebending and thematically very diverse. The storytelling is more artistic, as each episode is visually different, and quite stunning, delving into emotions. If you like the MCU and want something more complex than a Hollywood sci-fi action blockbuster, I highly recommend. Aysha: Folklore/Evermore - I’m absolutely obsessed with Taylor Swift - especially Folklore and Evermore. They shift away from pop into a chill indie-folk style, with the most vivid and gorgeous storytelling - Shakespeare’s got nothing on this lyricism. I like ‘the lakes’,‘cowboy like me’ which is about two con artists who meet at an expensive resort on the job and end up falling in love with each other,‘dorothea,’’my tears ricochet,’’gold rush’ and literally every single track omg... Kiran: Minari - The movie follows a Korean-American family that lives and has moved across various places in the United States. While the movie is melancholic at times, it is also heart-warming and tells a beautiful story of the ups and downs of familial relationships :) As someone who comes from an immigrant family, this movie also hit close to home. It showed and reminded me of how hard our families truly work for our well-being.

Tyler: Via Tevere the restaurant favourite but the hungry by the end

- If you like Italian food, then Via Tevere is for you. Their quattro formaggi pizza is my pastas are also amazing. Plus, if you’re still of your meal, then you have to try the Nutella donuts!

Thomas: Lombardo's Pizzeria - Lombardo’s is my favorite restaurant on Commercial Drive. If you love italian food, you have to try it. My favorite thing to get from Lombardo’s is the pepperoni pizza or the calzone. Lombardo’s is only a 20 minute walk from the school!! (This is not a paid endorsement. Lombardo’s please sponsor me).

K C T C I S' P Madoka: Lovecraft Country - This show was absolutely amazing! It’s a mix of scifi, horror, and history. It tackles the horrors of racial injustice in America. It is also very scary...the show not only unpacks horrific historical elements and references regarding racism in Jim Crow America but also includes literal monsters and supernatural elements that make the show spine-chilling. Zubin: Ujinotsuyu Genmaicha - The first thing I do whenever I arrive home after a long day of school is to fire up my kettle and pour myself a cup of tea to settle in for the evening. Lately the Ujinotsuyu Genmaicha loose leaf tea has been my favourite type to enjoy when unwinding in the late afternoon. Sarah: Cat's Cradle - This book follows John (protagonist), in his efforts to write a book regarding the day the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. It's an interesting social commentary and satire on themes such as religion and greed. So far the most accessible novel I have read of Vonnegut's, and definitely one of the best books I’ve read in a while! Kaden: Blue Raspberry Cream Cables - Sometimes, when I want to treat myself, I lay in bed and begin eating from a container with 1.38 kilograms of blue raspberry livewires. I’m pretty sure this product is meant for wholesale and not for someone to eat individually, but that’s okay. If you get this product, please eat it in moderation; I’m looking at the nutritional facts here and maybe I should stop... Audrey: And Then They Came For Us - This film is a cautionary tale connecting the surge of Islamophobia in the US after the September 11 attacks to the wartime hysteria that alienated Japanese-Americans following Japan’s bombing of Pearl Harbour. By emphasizing the connection of xenophobia between the forced incarceration of Japanese-Americans during WWII to Donald Trump’s Muslin registry and travel ban, this film brings history into the present. This film follows the Japanese-American activists who are taking a stand against Islamophobia, highlighting the importance of understanding our history to ensure it is not repeated.

The members of arts council created lunchtime workshops for the students in their grade! 1. The Grade 6 workshop where they decorated pictures of their teachers! 2. The Grade 7 workshop where students either had a nature themed free-draw or drew pictures of their teachers! 3. The Grade 10 MS paint drawing competition of various images shiba inu pictured here.

Variety Show! On Thursday we had our Variety Show assembly! There was a wide range of performances, like singing, musical instrument playing, theatre, comedy and more! We were especially excited to have a couple live acts from students in Grade 12. Our last act from Kiran D. (2021) and Mr. Williams was extra special because the grade 12s were able to watch the performance live!

For Aysha M. and Bali C-M's (2021) last council meeting, we took the zentangles we created as a school on Zoom the first day of Arts Week and hung them up in on the main MYP stairwell. We coordinated them by colour to create a rainbow effect and to complement the pride flag design the photography 9/10 class created.
